Then, the tormentor of enemies wished to search for the trace of Sītā, who had been abducted by Rāvaṇa, along the path frequented by the celestial charaṇas.
अथ वैदूर्यवर्णेषु शाद्वलेषु महाबलः ।
धीरः सलिलकल्पेषु विचचार यथासुखम् ॥२॥

Then, the mighty and resolute one comfortably roamed upon the emerald-green meadows, which were as pleasant as water.

Terrifying the birds, the intelligent one, uprooting trees with his chest, and striking down very many wild animals, appeared like a mighty lion.
नीललोहितमाञ्जिष्ठपद्मवर्णैः सितासितैः ।

Adorned with variegated minerals, naturally arranged, in hues of blue, red, madder-red, lotus-pink, white, and black.
कामरूपिभिराविष्टमभीक्ष्णं सपरिच्छदैः ।
यक्षकिंनरगन्धर्वैर्देवकल्पैश्च पन्नगैः ॥५॥

5. kāmarūpibhirāviṣṭamabhīkṣṇaṃ saparicchadaiḥ ,

It was constantly populated by shape-shifters, accompanied by their retinues: yakshas, kinnaras, gandharvas, and god-like serpents (pannagair).
स तस्य गिरिवर्यस्य तले नागवरायुते ।
तिष्ठन् कपिवरस्तत्र ह्रदे नाग इवाबभौ ॥६॥

Standing there at the base of that excellent mountain, which was adorned with mighty elephants, that preeminent ape appeared like a magnificent elephant (nāga) in a lake.
स सूर्याय महेन्द्राय पवनाय स्वयम्भुवे ।

He offered salutations to Sūrya, Mahendra, Pavana, and Svayambhū, as well as to all beings, and then resolved to undertake the journey.
अञ्जलिं प्राङ्मुखः कुर्वन्पवनायात्मयोनये ।
ततो हि ववृधे गन्तुं दक्षिणो दक्षिणां दिशम् ॥८॥

Offering a salutation while facing east to Pavana, his progenitor, he then indeed began to expand (in size) in order to proceed southward.
प्लवंगप्रवरैर्दृष्टः प्लवने कृतनिश्चयः ।
ववृधे रामवृद्ध्यर्थं समुद्र इव पर्वसु ॥९॥

Seen by the best among the monkeys, and having resolved upon the leap, he grew (in size) for the sake of Rāma's success, just as the ocean swells on the days of the new or full moon.
निष्प्रमाण शरीरः संल् लिलङ्घयिषुरर्णवम् ।

10. niṣpramāṇa śarīraḥ saṃl lilaṅghayiṣurarṇavam ,

Having assumed an immeasurable body and desiring to leap over the ocean, he pressed down the mountain with both his arms and his feet.
स चचालाचलाश्चारु मुहूर्तं कपिपीडितः ।
तरूणां पुष्पिताग्राणां सर्वं पुष्पमशातयत् ॥११॥

11. sa cacālācalāścāru muhūrtaṃ kapipīḍitaḥ ,
tarūṇāṃ puṣpitāgrāṇāṃ sarvaṃ puṣpamaśātayat.

saḥ cacāla acalaḥ cāru muhūrtaṃ kapipīḍitaḥ
tarūṇām puṣpitāgrāṇām sarvaṃ puṣpam aśātayat
tarūṇām puṣpitāgrāṇām sarvaṃ puṣpam aśātayat

That mountain, ordinarily unmoving, being agitated by the monkey (Hanuman), trembled intensely for a moment. It caused all the flowers from the blossoming treetops to fall.
तेन पादपमुक्तेन पुष्पौघेण सुगन्धिना ।
सर्वतः संवृतः शैलो बभौ पुष्पमयो यथा ॥१२॥

12. tena pādapamuktena puṣpaugheṇa sugandhinā ,

The mountain, entirely covered by that fragrant deluge of flowers shed by the trees, appeared as if it were wholly composed of blossoms.
तेन चोत्तमवीर्येण पीड्यमानः स पर्वतः ।
सलिलं संप्रसुस्राव मदं मत्त इव द्विपः ॥१३॥

13. tena cottamavīryeṇa pīḍyamānaḥ sa parvataḥ ,

And that mountain, being afflicted by the exceedingly mighty (Hanuman), profusely discharged water, just as an elephant in rut secretes fluid.
पीड्यमानस्तु बलिना महेन्द्रस्तेन पर्वतः ।
रीतिर्निर्वर्तयामास काञ्चनाञ्जनराजतीः ।
मुमोच च शिलाः शैलो विशालाः समनःशिलाः ॥१४॥

14. pīḍyamānastu balinā mahendrastena parvataḥ ,
rītirnirvartayāmāsa kāñcanāñjanarājatīḥ ,
mumoca ca śilāḥ śailo viśālāḥ samanaḥśilāḥ.
rītirnirvartayāmāsa kāñcanāñjanarājatīḥ ,

pīḍyamānaḥ tu balinā mahendraḥ
tena parvataḥ rītiḥ nirvartayāmāsa

śilāḥ śailaḥ viśālāḥ samanaḥśilāḥ
tena parvataḥ rītiḥ nirvartayāmāsa

14.
But Mount Mahēndra, being tormented by that powerful (Hanuman), caused mineral streaks of gold, black antimony, and silver to flow forth. And the mountain also cast down enormous rocks, some containing realgar.
गिरिणा पीड्यमानेन पीड्यमानानि सर्वशः ।
गुहाविष्टानि भूतानि विनेदुर्विकृतैः स्वरैः ॥१५॥

15. giriṇā pīḍyamānena pīḍyamānāni sarvaśaḥ ,

As the mountain was being crushed, the creatures dwelling within its caves, pressed on all sides, cried out with strange, distorted sounds.
स महासत्त्वसंनादः शैलपीडानिमित्तजः ।
पृथिवीं पूरयामास दिशश्चोपवनानि च ॥१६॥

16. sa mahāsattvasaṃnādaḥ śailapīḍānimittajaḥ ,
pṛthivīṃ pūrayāmāsa diśaścopavanāni ca.

That mighty roar of the creatures, born from the crushing of the mountain, filled the earth, the cardinal directions, and the groves.
शिरोभिः पृथुभिः सर्पा व्यक्तस्वस्तिकलक्षणैः ।
वमन्तः पावकं घोरं ददंशुर्दशनैः शिलाः ॥१७॥

17. śirobhiḥ pṛthubhiḥ sarpā vyaktasvastikalakṣaṇaiḥ ,
vamantaḥ pāvakaṃ ghoraṃ dadaṃśurdaśanaiḥ śilāḥ.

śirobhiḥ pṛthubhiḥ sarpāḥ vyaktasvastikalakṣaṇaiḥ
vamantaḥ pāvakaṃ ghoraṃ dadaṃśuḥ daśanaiḥ śilāḥ
vamantaḥ pāvakaṃ ghoraṃ dadaṃśuḥ daśanaiḥ śilāḥ
17.
Snakes, with their broad heads displaying clear auspicious (svastika) marks, bit the rocks with their fangs while spewing dreadful fire.
तास्तदा सविषैर्दष्टाः कुपितैस्तैर्महाशिलाः ।
जज्वलुः पावकोद्दीप्ता विभिदुश्च सहस्रधा ॥१८॥

18. tāstadā saviṣairdaṣṭāḥ kupitaistairmahāśilāḥ ,
jajvaluḥ pāvakoddīptā vibhiduśca sahasradhā.

tāḥ tadā saviṣaiḥ daṣṭāḥ kupitaiḥ taiḥ mahāśilāḥ

18.
Then, those huge rocks, bitten by the enraged and venomous (serpents), blazed, ignited by fire, and split into a thousand pieces.
यानि चौषधजालानि तस्मिञ्जातानि पर्वते ।
विषघ्नान्यपि नागानां न शेकुः शमितुं विषम् ॥१९॥

19. yāni cauṣadhajālāni tasmiñjātāni parvate ,
viṣaghnānyapi nāgānāṃ na śekuḥ śamituṃ viṣam.

Even the many medicinal plants that grew on that mountain, though they were potent antidotes for serpents, could not quell the poison.
भिद्यते ऽयं गिरिर्भूतैरिति मत्वा तपस्विनः ।
त्रस्ता विद्याधरास्तस्मादुत्पेतुः स्त्रीगणैः सह ॥२०॥

20. bhidyate'yaṃ girirbhūtairiti matvā tapasvinaḥ ,
trastā vidyādharāstasmādutpetuḥ strīgaṇaiḥ saha.

tapasvinaḥ ayam giriḥ bhūtaiḥ bhidyate iti matvā

20.
Thinking, 'This mountain is being rent apart by elemental beings (bhūtas)', the ascetics [too might have been disturbed]. The terrified Vidyādharas, along with their female retinues, flew up from that place.
पानभूमिगतं हित्वा हैममासनभाजनम् ।
पात्राणि च महार्हाणि करकांश्च हिरण्मयान् ॥२१॥

21. pānabhūmigataṃ hitvā haimamāsanabhājanam ,

Having abandoned the golden seats and vessels, which were located in the drinking hall, along with highly valuable (other) vessels and golden pitchers,
लेह्यानुच्चावचान्भक्ष्यान्मांसानि विविधानि च ।
आर्षभाणि च चर्माणि खड्गांश्च कनकत्सरून् ॥२२॥

22. lehyānuccāvacānbhakṣyānmāṃsāni vividhāni ca ,
ārṣabhāṇi ca carmāṇi khaḍgāṃśca kanakatsarūn.

...and various kinds of lickable and solid foods, diverse meats, bull-hides, and swords with golden hilts.
कृतकण्ठगुणाः क्षीबा रक्तमाल्यानुलेपनाः ।
रक्ताक्षाः पुष्कराक्षाश्च गगनं प्रतिपेदिरे ॥२३॥

23. kṛtakaṇṭhaguṇāḥ kṣībā raktamālyānulepanāḥ ,

The Vidyādhara great sages (maharṣis), displaying their great knowledge (mahāvidyā), stood assembled in the sky and observed the mountain.

This Hanuman, the son of the wind god (Marut) and resembling a mountain, desires to cross the mighty ocean, the dwelling place of sea monsters (makara).

Desiring to perform a difficult deed (karma) for the sake of Rama and the monkeys, he wishes to reach the far shore of the ocean, which is hard to attain.

He shook his body hair, and, like a mountain, he trembled. He then roared a mighty roar, just like a very vast cloud.

And as he was about to spring up, he swung his tail, which was rounded and completely covered with hair, just as the king of birds (Garuda) would fling away a snake.

His rapidly swirling tail was seen behind him, appearing like a great serpent being carried away by Garuda.

The monkey (Hanuman) braced his two arms, which resembled mighty iron clubs. He then settled down at his hips and drew his feet together.

Having drawn in his two arms and also his neck, that glorious and powerful one then became filled with radiance, inner strength (sattvam), and valor.

Gazing at the path from afar, with his eyes fixed upwards and observing the sky, he held his vital breaths (prāṇa) within his heart.

Having firmly positioned his feet and drawn back his ears, Hanuman, the chief of monkeys and immensely powerful, who was about to leap, spoke these words to the monkeys.

Just as an arrow released by Rāghava, having the swiftness of the wind, would fly, so too will I go to Laṅkā, which is guarded by Rāvaṇa.

Having spoken thus to the monkeys, Hanumān, the foremost among the monkeys, then sprang up swiftly and without hesitation.

He, bearing aloft the flowering trees that were filled with intoxicated wagtails and cranes, flew into the clear sky with the powerful speed of his thighs.

Trees, uprooted by the force of his thighs, followed the monkey for a moment, just as kinsmen accompany a relative who has embarked on a long journey.

Adorned by many trees with beautifully blossomed tops, the monkey Hanuman, with his mountain-like form, appeared as an astonishing sight.

Then, those substantial trees sank into the salty ocean, as if mountains had submerged into Varuna's abode (the ocean) out of fear of Mahendra (Great Indra).

The monkey, covered with various flowers, sprouts, and buds, looked splendid like a cloud-like mountain illuminated by fireflies.

Those trees, dislodged by his force, having shed their flowers, scattered into the water, just as friends withdraw.

That varied assortment of flowers from the trees, endowed with lightness and stirred by the monkey's movement, fell into the ocean.

The monkey, indeed, shone, accompanied by a stream of multi-colored flowers, like a rising cloud adorned with a multitude of lightning flashes.

The water, covered by the flowers stirred up by his great speed, appeared like the sky adorned with charming, rising stars.

His two extended arms, reaching into the sky, appeared like two five-headed serpents emerging from a mountain peak.

And that great monkey (mahākapi) appeared as if drinking the great ocean with its multitude of waves, and as if thirsty for the sky.

His two eyes, shining with the splendor of lightning as he moved along the path of the wind, appeared like two fires blazing on mountain peaks.

The two large, perfectly round, and tawny eyes of the chief of the tawny-eyed ones (Hanumān) shone brightly, appearing like the moon and sun.

And his (Hanumān's) tail, swung vigorously as he leaps, shines beautifully. In the sky, it appears like Indra's banner, raised high.

With his coiled tail, the great and white-fanged son of Vāyu (Hanumān) shone. The greatly wise one appeared like the sun surrounded by a halo.

That great monkey shone splendidly with his coppery-red haunches, like a mountain split open revealing great veins of red ochre minerals.

As that lion-like monkey (Hanuman) leaped across the ocean, the wind rushing into his armpits roared like a thundercloud.

Just as a meteor, emerging from the northern sky, falls with a trail and is seen in the firmament, so too appeared that excellent monkey.

The stretched-out monkey (Hanuman), resembling a falling bird, shone splendidly, like an elephant grown massive and being held by a tightening girth.

At that time, the monkey (kapi) appeared like a boat driven by the wind in the ocean, both due to his body (moving) high above and his deep, submerged shadow.

That immensely swift great monkey (mahākapi) soared, striking with his chest the mountain-like masses of ocean waves.

The mighty wind generated by the monkey (kapi) and the cloud-wind that emerged, together greatly agitated the dreadfully roaring ocean.

After seeing him (Hanuman) floating, the ocean-dwelling serpents in the sky considered that lion-like monkey to be Suparṇa.

The shadow of the lion-like monkey (vānarasiṃha), extending ten yojanas in width and thirty yojanas in length, appeared exceptionally beautiful in the water.

That shadow of his, following the son of Vāyu (Hanuman) like a line of white cloud masses, shone extended in the salty ocean.

Seeing that monkey (plavaga) swiftly soaring at that time, the gods, gandharvas, and dānavas showered down flowers.

Indeed, the sun did not burn him, the flying lord of monkeys. And at that time, the wind (vāyu) served him for the successful accomplishment of Rāma's objective.

And the sages praised him, as he flew through the sky. And the gods and gandharvas sang, extolling him who possessed great vigor.

ākāśe sahasā विगतक्लमं kapivaram prekṣya nāgāḥ yakṣāḥ rakṣāṃsi vibudhāḥ khagāḥ ca tuṣṭuvuḥ.

And the nāgas, yakṣas, rakṣasas, gods, and birds praised the excellent monkey (kapivara), seeing him in the sky, suddenly freed from fatigue.

As that best of monkeys (plavagaśārdūla), Hanumat, was leaping, the ocean (sāgara), intent on preserving the honor of the Ikṣvāku dynasty, began to ponder.
साहाय्यं वानरेन्द्रस्य यदि नाहं हनूमतः ।
करिष्यामि भविष्यामि सर्ववाच्यो विवक्षताम् ॥७६॥

If I do not provide assistance to this chief of monkeys (vānanarendra), Hanumat, I will become blameworthy in the eyes of all who choose to speak.

I was nurtured by Sagara, the king of the Ikṣvāku dynasty. And this one (Hanumat) is an associate of the Ikṣvākus, so he ought not to become exhausted.

Therefore, I must act in such a way that the monkey can rest. And, having rested upon me, he will comfortably traverse the remaining distance.

Having thus made this wise decision, the Ocean, hidden in the waters, addressed Maināka, the best of mountains, who had a golden navel.

O best of mountains (girisreṣṭha)! You have been placed here by the king of gods as a barricade for the hosts of asuras dwelling in the netherworld (pātāla).

You stand obstructing the immeasurable gateway of the netherworld (pātāla) for these asuras, whose prowess is known, and who are destined to rise again.

O best of mountains (nagasattama)! Your power, O mountain (śaila), is to grow sideways, upwards, and downwards. Therefore, I urge you: arise!

This mighty, lion-like monkey, Hanūmān, whose deeds are formidable, is coming over you, having leapt into the sky for Rāma's purpose.

Maināka, the mountain with a golden navel, having heard (the command/request) from the salty ocean, swiftly rose from the water, accompanied by great trees and vines.

Having pierced the ocean waters, he (Maināka) then rose exceedingly high, just as the sun, with its blazing rays, breaks through a cloud.

With peaks made of refined gold, inhabited by kinnaras and great serpents, resembling the rising sun, as if they were scratching the sky.

Due to the mountain's golden peaks, which rose high, the sky became like a shining weapon, gleaming with a golden radiance.

With peaks made of pure gold, shining with their own radiance, that supreme mountain became resplendent like a hundred suns.

Hanuman perceived that (mountain) which had risen unimpeded and stood before him in the midst of the salty ocean, and he concluded, 'This is an obstacle.'

That great monkey, possessing immense speed, struck down that extremely tall (mountain) with his chest, just as the wind throws down a cloud.

That excellent mountain, thus struck down by that monkey, understood the monkey's speed and both rejoiced and was pleased.

मानुषं धरयन् रूपमात्मनः शिखरे स्थितः ॥९७॥

The mountain, pleased and joyful in mind, spoke to that brave hero, the monkey, who was moving through the sky and (momentarily) situated in the sky, while assuming a human form and standing on its own peak.

"You, O best of monkeys, have performed this difficult deed (karma). Rest comfortably on my peaks after descending."

The ocean was made to grow by those born in the lineage of Rāghava. That very ocean, seeing you dedicated to Rāma's welfare, now offers you honor in return.

Indeed, it is a duty to return a favor for what has been done; this is the eternal natural law (dharma). This very (ocean), desiring that reciprocal action, deserves respect from you.

योजनानां शतं चापि कपिरेष समाप्लुतः ।
तव सानुषु विश्रान्तः शेषं प्रक्रमतामिति ॥१०१॥

Because of you, I have been urged by this (ocean) out of great respect. This monkey has already leaped a hundred yojanas. Therefore, having rested on your peaks, let him proceed with the remainder of his journey.
तिष्ठ त्वं हरिशार्दूल मयि विश्रम्य गम्यताम् ।
तदिदं गन्धवत् स्वादु कन्दमूलफलं बहु ।
तदास्वाद्य हरिश्रेष्ठ विश्रान्तो ऽनुगमिष्यसि ॥१०२॥

O tiger among monkeys, you should stop! Rest here upon me, and then continue your journey. Here is much fragrant, sweet tuber, root, and fruit. Having tasted that, O best of monkeys, and having rested, you will then proceed.

Indeed, there is also a connection between us and you, O chief among monkeys. You are renowned throughout the three worlds for possessing great virtues.

O son of Vāyu (Marutātmaja), O excellent monkey (Kapikuñjara)! Among those swift, leaping monkeys, I consider you to be the foremost.

Indeed, even an ordinary guest is worthy of respect by a discerning person and by one who seeks (dharma). How much more, then, is someone like you!

Indeed, O excellent monkey (Kapikuñjara), you are the son of the supreme god Vāyu (Maruta), the great-souled one, and you are equal to him in speed.

तस्मात्त्वं पूजनीयो मे शृणु चाप्यत्र कारणम् ॥१०७॥

O knower of natural law (dharma), when you are honored, Maruta (the wind god) also receives honor. Therefore, you must be revered by me. Now hear the reason for this.

In ancient times, O dear one, during the Kṛta age, mountains were winged like birds. They traveled in all directions, moving with the swiftness of Garuḍa and the wind.

Consequently, as they (the winged mountains) soared away, the assemblies of gods and sages, as well as other living beings, became gripped by fear, apprehensive of their potential collapse.

Consequently, the enraged Sahasrākṣa (Indra), who performed a hundred Vedic rituals (Śatakratu), severed the mountains' wings with his thunderbolt, here and there, by the thousands.

He, the king of the gods, Indra, enraged, approached me lifting his thunderbolt. Then I was suddenly thrown by the great-souled Vāyu.

O best of monkeys, I was thrown into this salty ocean. My wings were preserved, and I was entirely guarded by your father.

Therefore, I honor you; for my Vāyu (father) is indeed worthy of honor. And this connection exists between you and me, O chief of monkeys, O one of great qualities.

Therefore, in this situation that has thus arisen, you, O great monkey, with a pleased mind, should bring satisfaction to both the ocean and me.

O best of monkeys, relieve my weariness and accept my offering. Cherish my affection, for I am greatly pleased by your appearance.

Thus addressed, the best of monkeys spoke to that foremost mountain, 'I am pleased; your hospitality has been offered. Let this concern be put aside.'

The time for my mission is pressing, and the day is also advancing. Furthermore, a vow has been made by me that I must not stop here midway.

Having spoken thus, the mighty best of monkeys touched the mountain with his hand and, as if smiling, soared into the sky.

The son of the wind (anilātmaja) was observed by the mountain and the ocean with great reverence, and he was honored with appropriate blessings.

Then, leaping far upwards, having left behind the mountain and the great ocean, he took up his father's path and traveled in the clear sky.

And again attaining upward motion, the son of the wind (vāyusūnu) went in the spotless sky, looking back at that mountain, unsupported.

Having seen that second extremely difficult deed (karma) of Hanumān, all the gods, perfected beings (siddha), and great sages praised him.

The gods present there became delighted by the action (karma) of that golden Sunābha (mountain). And Indra, the thousand-eyed one, was also (delighted).

The wise Indra himself spoke words to Sunābha, the best of mountains, falteringly (with a choked voice) out of great satisfaction.
हिरण्यनाभशैलेन्द्रपरितुष्टो ऽस्मि ते भृशम् ।
अभयं ते प्रयच्छामि तिष्ठ सौम्य यथासुखम् ॥१२५॥

O king of mountains, golden-navelled one, I am greatly pleased with you! I grant you safety; remain, O gentle one, as you please.

You have rendered very great help to the mighty Hanumān, who was traversing a hundred yojanas, (who was) fearless even when danger was present.

सत्क्रियां कुर्वता शक्या तोषितो ऽस्मि दृढं त्वया ॥१२७॥

Indeed, this (Hanumān) proceeds as an emissary for Rāma, the son of Daśaratha. I have been firmly pleased by you for performing an excellent deed through your capability.
ततः प्रहर्षमलभद्विपुलं पर्वतोत्तमः ।
देवतानां पतिं दृष्ट्वा परितुष्टं शतक्रतुम् ॥१२८॥

Then, the best of mountains (Maināka) attained great joy, having seen the pleased lord of the gods, Indra (śatakratu).
स वै दत्तवरः शैलो बभूवावस्थितस्तदा ।
हनूमांश्च मुहूर्तेन व्यतिचक्राम सागरम् ॥१२९॥

That mountain (Maināka), having indeed received a boon, remained steady then. And Hanumān, in a moment, crossed the ocean.

Then the gods along with the gandharvas, and the siddhas, and the great sages spoke to Surasā, the mother of serpents, who was radiant like the sun.

This glorious son of Vāyu, named Hanumān, is flying over the ocean. For a moment, you should create an obstruction for him.
राक्षसं रूपमास्थाय सुघोरं पर्वतोपमम् ।

Assuming an extremely dreadful, mountain-like demonic form, with terrible fangs, tawny eyes, and a mouth touching the sky.

We wish to know his strength and, furthermore, his prowess: whether he will conquer you by some stratagem, or fall into distress.

Being distorted and disfigured, and terrifying to all, she enveloped Hanumān as he flew and then spoke these words.

Rāma, the son of Daśaratha by name, entered the Daṇḍaka forest with his brother Lakṣmaṇa and also with his wife Vaidehī.

His glorious wife, Sītā, was abducted by Rāvaṇa; this happened to him who was deeply engaged in his mission and had established enmity with the demons (rākṣasas).

Having thus spoken to Surasā, the enraged Hanumān then became ten yojanas in length and ten yojanas in width.

Upon seeing him, who resembled a cloud and was ten yojanas in length, Surasā also made her mouth twenty yojanas long.

But then Hanumān, enraged, extended to thirty yojanas in length. Surasā, in turn, made her mouth forty yojanas high.

The heroic Hanumān grew to be fifty yojanas tall. Surasā then made her mouth sixty yojanas wide.

Having seen that widely opened mouth of Surasā, which had a long tongue, was exceedingly dreadful, and resembled hell, that intelligent son of Vāyu (Hanumān)...

At that moment, Hanuman, the son of Vāyu (Maruti), contracted his body like a cloud and became thumb-sized.

He, the glorious one of great speed, having quickly rushed into that mouth and then having emerged from it, stood in the sky and spoke these words.

Indeed, I have entered your mouth, O Dākṣāyaṇī; salutations to you. I shall now proceed to where Vaidehī (Sītā) is, and may your prophecy (vacaḥ) be true.

Seeing him released from her mouth, just as the moon emerges from the mouth of Rāhu, the goddess Surasā then spoke to the monkey in her own original form.

Upon seeing that third, exceedingly difficult deed performed by Hanuman, all beings then praised the monkey (Hanuman), exclaiming, 'Excellent! Excellent!'

Having approached that impregnable ocean, the abode of Varuna, he, resembling Garuda, entered the sky and soared away swiftly.

It is adorned with pure, flying celestial chariots, and with (beings whose) mounts are lions, elephants, tigers, birds, and serpents.

It is splendidly adorned by strikes of thunderbolts and by fires, and embellished by those of great merit, great fortune, and who have conquered heaven.

It is frequented by Citrabhānu (fire), who constantly carries the oblations, and it is beautifully adorned by the hosts of planets, constellations, the moon, the sun, and stars.

It is crowded with multitudes of great sages (maharṣis), gandharvas, nāgas, and yakṣas; it is pure, spotless, all-encompassing, and frequented by Viśvāvasu.

He (Hanumān), having expanded his form, was present in the divine expanse, which serves as a canopy for the world of living beings, was created by Brahmā, is traversed by the elephant of the king of gods, forms the path of the moon and sun, and is auspicious.

The great clouds, being pulled by the monkey, shone brightly in that celestial region frequently frequented by valiant heroes and distinguished groups of Vidyādharas.

Then, he (Hanumān), repeatedly entering and emerging from the cloud formations, appeared like the moon in the rainy season, which also repeatedly emerges and enters clouds.

But a demoness named Siṃhikā, who was powerful and could change her form at will, having seen him (Hanumān) flying, pondered in her mind.

Today, after a long time, I shall be satisfied (with food). Indeed, this great creature (sattvam) has come under my control after a long time.

Thinking thus in her mind, she grasped his shadow. As soon as his shadow was seized, the monkey began to think.

I am suddenly seized, my valor crippled, just like a great ship in the ocean is (seized) by an adverse wind.

Then the monkey, looking sideways, upwards, and downwards, saw that great creature (sattvam) risen up in the salty ocean (lavaṇāmbhasi).

छायाग्राहि महावीर्यं तदिदं नात्र संशयः ॥१७१॥

This is indeed the creature of wondrous appearance, described by the king of monkeys (Sugriva), which seizes shadows and possesses immense power. There is no doubt about it.

That intelligent monkey (kapi), having truly recognized her as Singhika, grew to an immense size, just like a cloud in the rainy season.

When she saw the great monkey's body growing larger, she opened her mouth, which resembled the vast expanse of the netherworld (pātāla).

Then the sagacious great monkey (mahākapi) saw her deformed, enormous mouth, which was exactly the size of his own body, and also her vital spots.

That mighty (mahābala) monkey, whose body was as strong as a thunderbolt, repeatedly contracting his self (ātman), sprang out from her wide-open mouth.

The siddhas and charanas saw him sinking into her mouth, just as the full moon is swallowed by Rahu on a new or full moon day.

Then, having torn out her vital spots with his sharp nails, that monkey sprang out with great speed, his prowess like the flight of thought.

Having quickly seen Simhika, who had been killed and fallen by the monkey, the sky-dwelling beings spoke to that best of monkeys.

O king of monkeys, one who possesses these four qualities - resolve, insight, intelligence, and skill - just as you do, does not falter in his undertakings.

That monkey (kapi), honored and revered by them, having accomplished his mission, entered the sky and departed like Garuda, the devourer of serpents.

Having largely reached the other side, and looking all around, he (Hanuman) saw a forest-line at the end of a hundred yojanas.

The intelligent (matimān) Hanuman, perceiving his own (ātman) form as resembling a great cloud and seemingly obstructing the sky, then made a firm resolve (mati) in his mind.

The great monkey (mahākapi) thought, "Upon seeing my massive body and tremendous speed, the Rākṣasas would surely become very curious about me."

Assuming various beautiful forms, he reached the far shore of the ocean. His form was impossible for others to perceive; he had thoroughly examined himself (ātman) and fully grasped his objective.

Then he, the great soul (ātman), resembling the peak of a great mountain, landed on a prosperous, wonderfully-peaked summit of Mount Lamba, adorned with ketaka, uddālaka, and coconut trees.

Then, having powerfully crossed the ocean, teeming with demons and serpents and garlanded with great waves, he landed on the shore of that great ocean and saw Lanka, appearing like Amarāvatī.
