गतेष्वथ नृपो भूयः पौरेषु सह मन्त्रिभिः ।
मन्त्रयित्वा ततश्चक्रे निश्चयज्ञः स निश्चयम् ॥१॥
1. gateṣvatha nṛpo bhūyaḥ paureṣu saha mantribhiḥ ,

1. After the citizens had departed, the decisive king once again consulted with his ministers. Having deliberated, he then made his decision.
श्व एव पुष्यो भविता श्वो ऽभिषेच्येत मे सुतः ।
रामो राजीवताम्राक्षो यौवराज्य इति प्रभुः ॥२॥
2. śva eva puṣyo bhavitā śvo'bhiṣecyeta me sutaḥ ,
rāmo rājīvatāmrākṣo yauvarājya iti prabhuḥ.
2. śvas eva puṣyaḥ bhavitā śvas abhiṣecyeta me sutaḥ
rāmaḥ rājīvatāmrākṣaḥ yauvarājye iti prabhuḥ

2. The king declared, 'Tomorrow will indeed be the auspicious Pushya, and tomorrow my son, Rama, whose eyes are reddish like a lotus, shall be consecrated as crown prince.'
अथान्तर्गृहमाविश्य राजा दशरथस्तदा ।
सूतमाज्ञापयामास रामं पुनरिहानय ॥३॥
3. athāntargṛhamāviśya rājā daśarathastadā ,
sūtamājñāpayāmāsa rāmaṃ punarihānaya.
3. atha antargṛham āviśya rājā daśarathaḥ tadā
sūtam ājñāpayāmāsa rāmam punaḥ iha ānaya

3. Then, King Dasharatha entered his inner chambers. Thereupon, he commanded the charioteer, 'Bring Rama back here again!'
प्रतिगृह्य स तद्वाक्यं सूतः पुनरुपाययौ ।
रामस्य भवनं शीघ्रं राममानयितुं पुनः ॥४॥
4. pratigṛhya sa tadvākyaṃ sūtaḥ punarupāyayau ,
rāmasya bhavanaṃ śīghraṃ rāmamānayituṃ punaḥ.
4. pratigṛhya saḥ tat vākyam sūtaḥ punaḥ upayayau
rāmasya bhavanam śīghram rāmam ānayitum punaḥ
4. saḥ sūtaḥ tat vākyam pratigṛhya punaḥ rāmasya
bhavanam śīghram rāmam punaḥ ānayitum upāyayau
4. Having accepted that command, the charioteer quickly returned to Rama's dwelling to bring Rama back again.
द्वाःस्थैरावेदितं तस्य रामायागमनं पुनः ।
श्रुत्वैव चापि रामस्तं प्राप्तं शङ्कान्वितो ऽभवत् ॥५॥
5. dvāḥsthairāveditaṃ tasya rāmāyāgamanaṃ punaḥ ,
śrutvaiva cāpi rāmastaṃ prāptaṃ śaṅkānvito'bhavat.
5. dvāḥsthaiḥ āveditam tasya rāmāgamanam punaḥ śrutvā
eva ca api rāmaḥ tam prāptam śaṅkāanvitaḥ abhavat
5. dvāḥsthaiḥ tasya rāmāgamanam punaḥ āveditam rāmaḥ
ca api śrutvā eva tam prāptam śaṅkāanvitaḥ abhavat
5. When his doorkeepers announced the messenger's return to Rāma again, Rāma, upon hearing this, became apprehensive that he (the messenger) had arrived.
प्रवेश्य चैनं त्वरितं रामो वचनमब्रवीत् ।
यदागमनकृत्यं ते भूयस्तद्ब्रूह्यशेषतः ॥६॥
6. praveśya cainaṃ tvaritaṃ rāmo vacanamabravīt ,
yadāgamanakṛtyaṃ te bhūyastadbrūhyaśeṣataḥ.
6. praveśya ca enam tvaritam rāmaḥ vacanam abravīt
yat āgamanakṛtyam te bhūyaḥ tat brūhi aśeṣataḥ
6. ca enam praveśya rāmaḥ tvaritam vacanam abravīt
te yat āgamanakṛtyam tat bhūyaḥ aśeṣataḥ brūhi
6. Having swiftly admitted him, Rāma spoke these words: "What is the purpose of your arrival? Tell me that again, completely."
तमुवाच ततः सूतो राजा त्वां द्रष्टुमिच्छति ।
श्रुत्वा प्रमाणमत्र त्वं गमनायेतराय वा ॥७॥
7. tamuvāca tataḥ sūto rājā tvāṃ draṣṭumicchati ,
śrutvā pramāṇamatra tvaṃ gamanāyetarāya vā.
7. tam uvāca tataḥ sūtaḥ rājā tvām draṣṭum icchati
śrutvā pramāṇam atra tvam gamanāya itarāya vā
7. tataḥ sūtaḥ tam uvāca rājā tvām draṣṭum icchati tvam
atra pramāṇam śrutvā gamanāya itarāya vā (karma kuru)
7. Then the charioteer said to him: "The king wishes to see you. Having heard this authoritative statement (pramāṇa) here, you (may decide) for going or for staying."
इति सूतवचः श्रुत्वा रामो ऽथ त्वरयान्वितः ।
प्रययौ राजभवनं पुनर्द्रष्टुं नरेश्वरम् ॥८॥
8. iti sūtavacaḥ śrutvā rāmo'tha tvarayānvitaḥ ,
prayayau rājabhavanaṃ punardraṣṭuṃ nareśvaram.
8. iti sūtavacaḥ śrutvā rāmaḥ atha tvarayā anvitaḥ
prayayau rājabhavanam punar draṣṭum naraīśvaram
8. iti sūtavacaḥ śrutvā atha tvarayā anvitaḥ rāmaḥ

8. Having heard these words of the charioteer, Rāma, then filled with haste, went to the royal palace to see the king again.
तं श्रुत्वा समनुप्राप्तं रामं दशरथो नृपः ।
प्रवेशयामास गृहं विविक्षुः प्रियमुत्तमम् ॥९॥
9. taṃ śrutvā samanuprāptaṃ rāmaṃ daśaratho nṛpaḥ ,
praveśayāmāsa gṛhaṃ vivikṣuḥ priyamuttamam.
9. tam śrutvā samanuprāptam rāmam daśarathaḥ nṛpaḥ
praveśayāmāsa gṛham vivikṣuḥ priyam uttamam
9. daśarathaḥ nṛpaḥ,
tam priyam uttamam rāmam samanuprāptam śrutvā,
vivikṣuḥ gṛham praveśayāmāsa.
9. Upon hearing that Rama, his beloved and excellent son, had arrived, King Dasharatha, himself desiring to enter the house, had him brought inside.
प्रविशन्नेव च श्रीमान् राघवो भवनं पितुः ।
ददर्श पितरं दूरात् प्रणिपत्य कृताञ्जलिः ॥१०॥
10. praviśanneva ca śrīmān rāghavo bhavanaṃ pituḥ ,
dadarśa pitaraṃ dūrāt praṇipatya kṛtāñjaliḥ.
10. praviśan eva ca śrīmān rāghavaḥ bhavanam pituḥ
dadarśa pitaram dūrāt praṇipatya kṛtāñjaliḥ
10. ca praviśan eva rāghavaḥ śrīmān pituḥ bhavanam,
dūrāt pitaram dadarśa,
praṇipatya kṛtāñjaliḥ (āsīt).
10. And just as the glorious Rama (descendant of Raghu) was entering his father's house, he saw his father from a distance and, bowing down with folded hands, greeted him.
प्रणमन्तं समुत्थाप्य तं परिष्वज्य भूमिपः ।
प्रदिश्य चास्मै रुचिरमासनं पुनरब्रवीत् ॥११॥
11. praṇamantaṃ samutthāpya taṃ pariṣvajya bhūmipaḥ ,
pradiśya cāsmai ruciramāsanaṃ punarabravīt.
11. praṇamantam samutthāpya tam pariṣvajya bhūmipaḥ
pradiśya ca asmai ruciram āsanam punaḥ abravīt
11. bhūmipaḥ,
praṇamantam tam samutthāpya,
pariṣvajya,
ca asmai ruciram āsanam pradiśya,
punaḥ abravīt.
11. The king, having raised the bowing (Rama) and embraced him, then offered him a beautiful seat, and spoke again.
राम वृद्धो ऽस्मि दीर्घायुर्भुक्ता भोगा मयेप्सिताः ।
अन्नवद्भिः क्रतुशतैस्तथेष्टं भूरिदक्षिणैः ॥१२॥
12. rāma vṛddho'smi dīrghāyurbhuktā bhogā mayepsitāḥ ,
annavadbhiḥ kratuśataistatheṣṭaṃ bhūridakṣiṇaiḥ.
12. rāma vṛddhaḥ asmi dīrghāyuḥ bhuktāḥ bhogāḥ mayā īpsitāḥ
annavadbhiḥ kratuśataiḥ tathā iṣṭam bhūridakṣiṇaiḥ
12. rāma asmi vṛddhaḥ dīrghāyuḥ mayā īpsitāḥ bhogāḥ bhuktāḥ
tathā annavadbhiḥ bhūridakṣiṇaiḥ kratuśataiḥ iṣṭam
12. O Rama, I am old and have lived a long life. I have enjoyed all desired pleasures. Likewise, hundreds of Vedic rituals (yajñas) have been performed by me, accompanied by abundant food and generous donations.
जातमिष्टमपत्यं मे त्वमद्यानुपमं भुवि ।
दत्तमिष्टमधीतं च मया पुरुषसत्तम ॥१३॥
13. jātamiṣṭamapatyaṃ me tvamadyānupamaṃ bhuvi ,
dattamiṣṭamadhītaṃ ca mayā puruṣasattama.
13. jātam iṣṭam apatyam me tvam adya anupamam bhuvi
dattam iṣṭam adhītam ca mayā puruṣasattama
13. puruṣasattama adya tvam me iṣṭam anupamam apatyam bhuvi jātam (asi).
mayā dattam iṣṭam adhītam ca (kṛtam asti).
13. O best among men (puruṣa), today you are born as my beloved and incomparable child on earth. By me, desired donations have been given, Vedic rituals (yajña) performed, and studies completed.
अनुभूतानि चेष्टानि मया वीर सुखानि च ।
देवर्षि पितृविप्राणामनृणो ऽस्मि तथात्मनः ॥१४॥
14. anubhūtāni ceṣṭāni mayā vīra sukhāni ca ,
devarṣi pitṛviprāṇāmanṛṇo'smi tathātmanaḥ.
14. anubhūtāni ca iṣṭāni mayā vīra sukhāni ca
devarṣipitṛviprāṇām anṛṇaḥ asmi tathā ātmanaḥ
14. vīra mayā iṣṭāni sukhāni ca anubhūtāni ca (santi).
devarṣipitṛviprāṇām tathā ātmanaḥ anṛṇaḥ asmi.
14. O hero, I have experienced desired joys and pleasures. I am free from debt to the gods, sages, ancestors, and Brahmins, and likewise to my own self (ātman).
न किं चिन्मम कर्तव्यं तवान्यत्राभिषेचनात् ।
अतो यत्त्वामहं ब्रूयां तन्मे त्वं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥१५॥
15. na kiṃ cinmama kartavyaṃ tavānyatrābhiṣecanāt ,
ato yattvāmahaṃ brūyāṃ tanme tvaṃ kartumarhasi.
15. na kim cit mama kartavyam tava anyatra abhiṣecanāt
ataḥ yat tvām aham brūyām tat me tvam kartum arhasi
15. tava abhiṣecanāt anyatra mama kim cit kartavyam na (asti).
ataḥ yat aham tvām brūyām,
tat tvam me kartum arhasi.
15. There is nothing left for me to do, except for your consecration. Therefore, whatever I may tell you, you ought to do that for me.
अद्य प्रकृतयः सर्वास्त्वामिच्छन्ति नराधिपम् ।
अतस्त्वां युवराजानमभिषेक्ष्यामि पुत्रक ॥१६॥
16. adya prakṛtayaḥ sarvāstvāmicchanti narādhipam ,
atastvāṃ yuvarājānamabhiṣekṣyāmi putraka.
16. adya prakṛtayaḥ sarvāḥ tvām icchanti narādhipam
ataḥ tvām yuvarājānam abhiṣekṣyāmi putraka
16. putraka adya sarvāḥ prakṛtayaḥ tvām narādhipam icchanti.
ataḥ aham tvām yuvarājānam abhiṣekṣyāmi.
16. Today, all the subjects (prakṛti) desire you as their king. Therefore, O dear son, I will consecrate you as the crown prince.
अपि चाद्याशुभान् राम स्वप्नान्पश्यामि दारुणान् ।
सनिर्घाता महोल्काश्च पतन्तीह महास्वनाः ॥१७॥
17. api cādyāśubhān rāma svapnānpaśyāmi dāruṇān ,
sanirghātā maholkāśca patantīha mahāsvanāḥ.
17. api ca adya aśubhān rāma svapnān paśyāmi dāruṇān
sanirghātāḥ maholkāḥ ca patanti iha mahāsvanāḥ
17. rāma api ca adya aśubhān dāruṇān svapnān paśyāmi
iha sanirghātāḥ ca maholkāḥ mahāsvanāḥ patanti
17. Moreover, today, O Rāma, I am seeing inauspicious and terrifying dreams. And here, great meteors, accompanied by thunder, are falling with mighty roars.
अवष्टब्धं च मे राम नक्षत्रं दारुणैर्ग्रहैः ।
आवेदयन्ति दैवज्ञाः सूर्याङ्गारकराहुभिः ॥१८॥
18. avaṣṭabdhaṃ ca me rāma nakṣatraṃ dāruṇairgrahaiḥ ,
āvedayanti daivajñāḥ sūryāṅgārakarāhubhiḥ.
18. avaṣṭabdham ca me rāma nakṣatram dāruṇaiḥ grahaiḥ
āvedayanti daivajñāḥ sūrya-aṅgāraka-rāhubhiḥ
18. rāma ca me nakṣatram dāruṇaiḥ grahaiḥ avaṣṭabdham
daivajñāḥ sūrya-aṅgāraka-rāhubhiḥ āvedayanti
18. And, O Rāma, my birth constellation is oppressed by dreadful planets. The astrologers (diviners) declare this to be due to the Sun, Mars, and Rāhu.
प्रायेण हि निमित्तानामीदृशानां समुद्भवे ।
राजा वा मृत्युमाप्नोति घोरां वापदमृच्छति ॥१९॥
19. prāyeṇa hi nimittānāmīdṛśānāṃ samudbhave ,
rājā vā mṛtyumāpnoti ghorāṃ vāpadamṛcchati.
19. prāyeṇa hi nimittānām īdṛśānām samudbhave rājā
vā mṛtyum āpnoti ghorām vā āpadam ṛcchati
19. hi prāyeṇa īdṛśānām nimittānām samudbhave rājā
vā mṛtyum āpnoti vā ghorām āpadam ṛcchati
19. Indeed, generally, when omens of this kind appear, a king either meets death or experiences a terrible calamity.
तद् यावदेव मे चेतो न विमुह्यति राघव ।
तावदेवाभिषिञ्चस्व चला हि प्राणिनां मतिः ॥२०॥
20. tad yāvadeva me ceto na vimuhyati rāghava ,
tāvadevābhiṣiñcasva calā hi prāṇināṃ matiḥ.
20. tat yāvat eva me cetaḥ na vimuhyati rāghava
tāvat eva abhiṣiñcasva calā hi prāṇinām matiḥ
20. rāghava tat yāvat eva me cetaḥ na vimuhyati
tāvat eva abhiṣiñcasva hi prāṇinām matiḥ calā
20. Therefore, O Rāghava, as long as my mind does not become bewildered, just so long, consecrate yourself, for indeed, the intellect (mati) of living beings is fickle.
अद्य चन्द्रो ऽभ्युपगतः पुष्यात् पूर्वं पुनर्वसुम् ।
श्वः पुष्य योगं नियतं वक्ष्यन्ते दैवचिन्तकाः ॥२१॥
21. adya candro'bhyupagataḥ puṣyāt pūrvaṃ punarvasum ,
śvaḥ puṣya yogaṃ niyataṃ vakṣyante daivacintakāḥ.
21. adya candraḥ abhyupagataḥ puṣyāt pūrvaṃ punarvasum
śvaḥ puṣya yogaṃ niyataṃ vakṣyante daivachintakāḥ
21. adya candraḥ puṣyāt pūrvaṃ punarvasum abhyupagataḥ
śvaḥ daivachintakāḥ niyataṃ puṣya yogaṃ vakṣyante
21. Today, the moon has moved into the Punarvasu constellation, which is just before Puṣya. Astrologers will certainly declare its conjunction with Puṣya tomorrow.
तत्र पुष्ये ऽभिषिञ्चस्व मनस्त्वरयतीव माम् ।
श्वस्त्वाहमभिषेक्ष्यामि यौवराज्ये परंतप ॥२२॥
22. tatra puṣye'bhiṣiñcasva manastvarayatīva mām ,
śvastvāhamabhiṣekṣyāmi yauvarājye paraṃtapa.
22. tatra puṣye abhiṣiñcasva manaḥ tvarayati iva mām
śvas tvā aham abhiṣekṣyāmi yauvarājye paraṃtapa
22. tatra puṣye abhiṣiñcasva manaḥ mām iva tvarayati
śvas aham tvā paraṃtapa yauvarājye abhiṣekṣyāmi
22. Therefore, perform the anointment ritual when the moon is in the Puṣya constellation; my mind, as it were, hastens me. Tomorrow, O vanquisher of foes, I shall consecrate you as crown prince (yauvarājya).
तस्मात्त्वयाद्य व्रतिना निशेयं नियतात्मना ।
सह वध्वोपवस्तव्या दर्भप्रस्तरशायिना ॥२३॥
23. tasmāttvayādya vratinā niśeyaṃ niyatātmanā ,
saha vadhvopavastavyā darbhaprastaraśāyinā.
23. tasmāt tvayā adya vratinā niśā iyam niyatātmanā
saha vadhvā upavastavyā darbhaprastaraśāyinā
23. tasmāt adya iyam niśā tvayā vratinā niyatātmanā
darbhaprastaraśāyinā vadhvā saha upavastavyā
23. Therefore, tonight you, as one observing a vow, with a controlled self (ātman), must spend this night together with your wife, lying upon a bed of darbha grass.
सुहृदश्चाप्रमत्तास्त्वां रक्षन्त्वद्य समन्ततः ।
भवन्ति बहुविघ्नानि कार्याण्येवंविधानि हि ॥२४॥
24. suhṛdaścāpramattāstvāṃ rakṣantvadya samantataḥ ,
bhavanti bahuvighnāni kāryāṇyevaṃvidhāni hi.
24. suhṛdaḥ ca apramattāḥ tvām rakṣantu adya samantataḥ
bhavanti bahuvighnāni kāryāṇi evaṃvidhāni hi
24. ca apramattāḥ suhṛdaḥ adya samantataḥ tvām rakṣantu
hi evaṃvidhāni kāryāṇi bahuvighnāni bhavanti
24. And may vigilant friends protect you today from all sides, for indeed, undertakings of this nature are prone to many obstacles.
विप्रोषितश्च भरतो यावदेव पुरादितः ।
तावदेवाभिषेकस्ते प्राप्तकालो मतो मम ॥२५॥
25. viproṣitaśca bharato yāvadeva purāditaḥ ,
tāvadevābhiṣekaste prāptakālo mato mama.
25. vipraṣitaḥ ca bharataḥ yāvat eva purāt itaḥ
tāvat eva abhiṣekaḥ te prāptakālaḥ mataḥ mama
25. mama mataḥ te abhiṣekaḥ prāptakālaḥ yāvat
eva bharataḥ purāt itaḥ vipraṣitaḥ ca
25. While Bharata is absent and away from the city, I consider it the opportune time for your consecration.
कामं खलु सतां वृत्ते भ्राता ते भरतः स्थितः ।
ज्येष्ठानुवर्ती धर्मात्मा सानुक्रोशो जितेन्द्रियः ॥२६॥
26. kāmaṃ khalu satāṃ vṛtte bhrātā te bharataḥ sthitaḥ ,
jyeṣṭhānuvartī dharmātmā sānukrośo jitendriyaḥ.
26. kāmam khalu satām vṛtte bhrātā te bharataḥ sthitaḥ
jyeṣṭhānuvartī dharmātmā sānukrośaḥ jitendriyaḥ
26. te bhrātā bharataḥ kāmam khalu satām vṛtte sthitaḥ
jyeṣṭhānuvartī dharmātmā sānukrośaḥ jitendriyaḥ
26. Indeed, your brother Bharata is firmly established in the conduct of the virtuous. He follows his elder brother, possesses a virtuous nature (dharma), is compassionate, and has conquered his senses.
किं तु चित्तं मनुष्याणामनित्यमिति मे मतिः ।
सतां च धर्मनित्यानां कृतशोभि च राघव ॥२७॥
27. kiṃ tu cittaṃ manuṣyāṇāmanityamiti me matiḥ ,
satāṃ ca dharmanityānāṃ kṛtaśobhi ca rāghava.
27. kim tu cittam manuṣyāṇām anityam iti me matiḥ
satām ca dharmanityānām kṛtaśobhi ca rāghava
27. rāghava kim tu manuṣyāṇām cittam anityam iti
me matiḥ ca satām dharmanityānām kṛtaśobhi ca
27. However, my opinion (mati) is that the minds of humans are impermanent. And, O Rāghava, for those virtuous ones who are steadfast in natural law (dharma), their actions are indeed glorious.
इत्युक्तः सो ऽभ्यनुज्ञातः श्वोभाविन्यभिषेचने ।
व्रजेति रामः पितरमभिवाद्याभ्ययाद्गृहम् ॥२८॥
28. ityuktaḥ so'bhyanujñātaḥ śvobhāvinyabhiṣecane ,
vrajeti rāmaḥ pitaramabhivādyābhyayādgṛham.
28. iti uktaḥ saḥ abhyanujñātaḥ śvobhāvini abhiṣecane
vraja iti rāmaḥ pitaram abhivādya abhyayāt gṛham
28. iti uktaḥ ca abhyanujñātaḥ saḥ rāmaḥ śvobhāvini
abhiṣecane vraja iti pitaram abhivādya gṛham abhyayāt
28. After being thus addressed and given permission, Rāma saluted his father and, with the instruction 'Go!' for the coronation scheduled for tomorrow, went home.
प्रविश्य चात्मनो वेश्म राज्ञोद्दिष्टे ऽभिषेचने ।
तस्मिन् क्षणे विनिर्गत्य मातुरन्तःपुरं ययौ ॥२९॥
29. praviśya cātmano veśma rājñoddiṣṭe'bhiṣecane ,
tasmin kṣaṇe vinirgatya māturantaḥpuraṃ yayau.
29. praviśya ca ātmanaḥ veśma rājñā uddiṣṭe abhiṣecane
tasmin kṣaṇe vinirgatya mātuḥ antaḥpuram yayau
29. ātmanaḥ veśma rājñā abhiṣecane uddiṣṭe praviśya
ca tasmin kṣaṇe vinirgatya mātuḥ antaḥpuram yayau
29. Having entered his own residence, which the king had designated for his consecration, he immediately departed from that place and proceeded to his mother's inner chambers.
तत्र तां प्रवणामेव मातरं क्षौमवासिनीम् ।
वाग्यतां देवतागारे ददर्श याचतीं श्रियम् ॥३०॥
30. tatra tāṃ pravaṇāmeva mātaraṃ kṣaumavāsinīm ,

30. There, in the deity's chamber, he saw his mother, deeply devoted, clad in silken garments, and observing a vow of silence, as she prayed to the goddess Śrī (śrī).
प्रागेव चागता तत्र सुमित्रा लक्ष्मणस्तथा ।
सीता चानायिता श्रुत्वा प्रियं रामाभिषेचनम् ॥३१॥
31. prāgeva cāgatā tatra sumitrā lakṣmaṇastathā ,
sītā cānāyitā śrutvā priyaṃ rāmābhiṣecanam.

31. Sumitrā and Lakṣmaṇa had already arrived there, and Sītā too had been brought after hearing about the joyous consecration of Rāma.
तस्मिन् काले हि कौसल्या तस्थावामीलितेक्षणा ।
सुमित्रयान्वास्यमाना सीतया लक्ष्मणेन च ॥३२॥
32. tasmin kāle hi kausalyā tasthāvāmīlitekṣaṇā ,
sumitrayānvāsyamānā sītayā lakṣmaṇena ca.

sumitrayā anvāsyāmānā sītayā lakṣmaṇena ca

32. Indeed, at that time, Kausalyā stood with her eyes closed, attended by Sumitrā, Sītā, and Lakṣmaṇa.
श्रुत्वा पुष्येण पुत्रस्य यौवराज्याभिषेचनम् ।
प्राणायामेन पुरुषं ध्यायमाना जनार्दनम् ॥३३॥
33. śrutvā puṣyeṇa putrasya yauvarājyābhiṣecanam ,
prāṇāyāmena puruṣaṃ dhyāyamānā janārdanam.

33. Having heard about her son's anointing as crown prince during the Puṣya constellation, she was meditating on Janārdana, the supreme Person (puruṣa), through breath control (prāṇāyāma).
तथा सनियमामेव सो ऽभिगम्याभिवाद्य च ।
उवाच वचनं रामो हर्षयंस्तामिदं तदा ॥३४॥
34. tathā saniyamāmeva so'bhigamyābhivādya ca ,
uvāca vacanaṃ rāmo harṣayaṃstāmidaṃ tadā.
34. tathā saniyamām eva saḥ abhigamya abhivādya
ca uvāca vacanam rāmaḥ harṣayan tām idam tadā

34. Having approached her who was thus disciplined and having greeted her, Rama then spoke these words to her, delighting her.
अम्ब पित्रा नियुक्तो ऽस्मि प्रजापालनकर्मणि ।
भविता श्वो ऽभिषेको मे यथा मे शासनं पितुः ॥३५॥
35. amba pitrā niyukto'smi prajāpālanakarmaṇi ,
bhavitā śvo'bhiṣeko me yathā me śāsanaṃ pituḥ.
35. amba pitrā niyuktaḥ asmi prajāpālanakarmaṇi
bhavitā śvaḥ abhiṣekaḥ me yathā me śāsanam pituḥ
35. amba pitrā prajāpālanakarmaṇi niyuktaḥ asmi; me
abhiṣekaḥ śvaḥ bhavitā yathā pituḥ me śāsanam
35. "Mother, I have been appointed by my father to the task of upholding the natural law (dharma) through protecting the subjects (karma). My anointing will take place tomorrow, just as it is my father's command."
सीतयाप्युपवस्तव्या रजनीयं मया सह ।
एवमृत्विगुपाध्यायैः सह मामुक्तवान्पिता ॥३६॥
36. sītayāpyupavastavyā rajanīyaṃ mayā saha ,
evamṛtvigupādhyāyaiḥ saha māmuktavānpitā.
36. sītayā api upavastavyā rajanī iyam mayā saha
evam ṛtvigupādhyāyaiḥ saha mām uktavān pitā
36. sītayā api iyam rajanī mayā saha upavastavyā;
evam pitā ṛtvigupādhyāyaiḥ saha mām uktavān
36. "This night must also be spent by Sītā along with me. Thus, my father spoke to me in the presence of the priests and teachers."
यानि यान्यत्र योग्यानि श्वोभाविन्यभिषेचने ।
तानि मे मङ्गलान्यद्य वैदेह्याश्चैव कारय ॥३७॥
37. yāni yānyatra yogyāni śvobhāvinyabhiṣecane ,
tāni me maṅgalānyadya vaidehyāścaiva kāraya.
37. yāni yāni atra yogyāni śvobhāvini abhiṣecane
tāni me maṅgalāni adya vaidehyāḥ ca eva kāraya
37. me vaidehyāḥ ca śvobhāvini abhiṣecane yāni yāni
atra yogyāni maṅgalāni tāni adya eva kāraya
37. Arrange for me today all those auspicious preparations that are suitable for my coronation (abhiṣecana) and for Vaidehī's (Sītā's) tomorrow.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु कौसल्या चिरकालाभिकाङ्क्षितम् ।
हर्षबाष्पकलं वाक्यमिदं राममभाषत ॥३८॥
38. etacchrutvā tu kausalyā cirakālābhikāṅkṣitam ,
harṣabāṣpakalaṃ vākyamidaṃ rāmamabhāṣata.

38. Having heard this long-desired news, Kausalyā, her speech choked with tears of joy, spoke these words to Rāma.
वत्स राम चिरं जीव हतास्ते परिपन्थिनः ।
ज्ञातीन्मे त्वं श्रिया युक्तः सुमित्रायाश्च नन्दय ॥३९॥
39. vatsa rāma ciraṃ jīva hatāste paripanthinaḥ ,
jñātīnme tvaṃ śriyā yuktaḥ sumitrāyāśca nandaya.
39. vatsa rāma ciram jīva hatāḥ te paripanthinaḥ |
jñātīn me tvam śriyā yuktaḥ sumitrāyāḥ ca nandaya

39. Dear son Rāma, may you live long! Your enemies are destroyed. May you, endowed with prosperity and glory, bring joy to my relatives and to Sumitrā's.
कल्याणे बत नक्षत्रे मयि जातो ऽसि पुत्रक ।
येन त्वया दशरथो गुणैराराधितः पिता ॥४०॥
40. kalyāṇe bata nakṣatre mayi jāto'si putraka ,
yena tvayā daśaratho guṇairārādhitaḥ pitā.

40. Oh, dear son! You were born to me under an auspicious constellation, by whom, through your virtues, your father Daśaratha was pleased.
अमोघं बत मे क्षान्तं पुरुषे पुष्करेक्षणे ।
येयमिक्ष्वाकुराज्यश्रीः पुत्र त्वां संश्रयिष्यति ॥४१॥
41. amoghaṃ bata me kṣāntaṃ puruṣe puṣkarekṣaṇe ,
yeyamikṣvākurājyaśrīḥ putra tvāṃ saṃśrayiṣyati.
41. amogham bata me kṣāntam puruṣe puṣkarekṣaṇe yā
iyam ikṣvākurājyaśrīḥ putra tvām saṃśrayiṣyati
41. putra me kṣāntam amogham bata puṣkarekṣaṇe puruṣe
yā iyam ikṣvākurājyaśrīḥ tvām saṃśrayiṣyati
41. O son, my forbearance (kṣāntam) concerning this lotus-eyed person (puruṣa) has indeed not been in vain, for this prosperity (śrīḥ) of the Ikshvaku kingdom will now take refuge in you.
इत्येवमुक्तो मात्रेदं रामो भारतमब्रवीत् ।
प्राञ्जलिं प्रह्वमासीनमभिवीक्ष्य स्मयन्निव ॥४२॥
42. ityevamukto mātredaṃ rāmo bhāratamabravīt ,
prāñjaliṃ prahvamāsīnamabhivīkṣya smayanniva.
42. iti eva uktaḥ mātrā idam rāmaḥ bharatam abravīt
prāñjalim prahvam āsīnam abhivīkṣya smayan iva
42. mātrā iti eva uktaḥ rāmaḥ prāñjalim prahvam āsīnam

42. Having thus been addressed by his mother, Rāma said this to Bharata, after observing him seated humbly with folded hands, as if with a slight smile.
लक्ष्मणेमां मया सार्धं प्रशाधि त्वं वसुंधराम् ।
द्वितीयं मे ऽन्तरात्मानं त्वामियं श्रीरुपस्थिता ॥४३॥
43. lakṣmaṇemāṃ mayā sārdhaṃ praśādhi tvaṃ vasuṃdharām ,
dvitīyaṃ me'ntarātmānaṃ tvāmiyaṃ śrīrupasthitā.
43. lakṣmaṇa imām mayā sārdham praśādhi tvam vasundharām
dvitīyam me antarātmānam tvām iyam śrīḥ upasthitā
43. lakṣmaṇa tvam mayā sārdham imām vasundharām praśādhi
(tvam) me dvitīyam antarātmānam iyam śrīḥ tvām upasthitā
43. O Lakshmana, you rule this earth with me. You are my second inner self (antaratman), and this royal prosperity (śrīḥ) has come to you.
सौमित्रे भुङ्क्ष्व भोगांस्त्वमिष्टान् राज्यफलानि च ।
जीवितं च हि राज्यं च त्वदर्थमभिकामये ॥४४॥
44. saumitre bhuṅkṣva bhogāṃstvamiṣṭān rājyaphalāni ca ,
jīvitaṃ ca hi rājyaṃ ca tvadarthamabhikāmaye.
44. saumitre bhuṅkṣva bhogān tvam iṣṭān rājyaphalāni
ca jīvitam ca hi rājyam ca tvadartham abhikāmaye
44. saumitre tvam iṣṭān bhogān rājyaphalāni ca bhuṅkṣva
hi jīvitam ca rājyam ca tvadartham abhikāmaye
44. O son of Sumitrā (saumitre), you enjoy the desired pleasures and the fruits of the kingdom. Indeed, I desire both life and the kingdom for your sake alone.
इत्युक्त्वा लक्ष्मणं रामो मातरावभिवाद्य च ।
अभ्यनुज्ञाप्य सीतां च जगाम स्वं निवेशनम् ॥४५॥
45. ityuktvā lakṣmaṇaṃ rāmo mātarāvabhivādya ca ,
abhyanujñāpya sītāṃ ca jagāma svaṃ niveśanam.
45. iti uktvā lakṣmaṇam rāmaḥ mātārau abhivādya ca
abhyanujñāpya sītām ca jagāma svam niveśanam
45. rāmaḥ lakṣmaṇam iti uktvā ca mātārau abhivādya
ca sītām abhyanujñāpya svam niveśanam jagāma
45. Having spoken thus to Lakshmana, and having respectfully greeted his two mothers, and having taken leave of Sita, Rama went to his own abode.
