दीर्घकालोषितस्तस्मिन् गिरौ गिरिवनप्रियः ।
विदेह्याः प्रियमाकाङ्क्षन् स्वं च चित्तं विलोभयन् ॥१॥
1. dīrghakāloṣitastasmin girau girivanapriyaḥ ,

1. Having resided on that mountain for a long time, he, who was fond of mountains and forests, was desiring what was pleasing to the princess of Videha (Sita) and captivating his own mind.
अथ दाशरथिश्चित्रं चित्रकूटमदर्शयत् ।
भार्याममरसंकाशः शचीमिव पुरंदरः ॥२॥
2. atha dāśarathiścitraṃ citrakūṭamadarśayat ,
bhāryāmamarasaṃkāśaḥ śacīmiva puraṃdaraḥ.

bhāryām amarasamkāśaḥ śacīm iva purandaraḥ

2. Then, Daśaratha's son (Rama), resplendent like a god, showed his wife (Sita) the beautiful Chitrakuta mountain, just as Purandara (Indra) showed Śacī.
न राज्याद्भ्रंशनं भद्रे न सुहृद्भिर्विनाभवः ।
मनो मे बाधते दृष्ट्वा रमणीयमिमं गिरिम् ॥३॥
3. na rājyādbhraṃśanaṃ bhadre na suhṛdbhirvinābhavaḥ ,
mano me bādhate dṛṣṭvā ramaṇīyamimaṃ girim.
3. na rājyāt bhraṃśanam bhadre na suhṛdbhiḥ vinābhavaḥ
manaḥ me bādhate dṛṣṭvā ramaṇīyam imam girim
3. bhadre,
rājyāt bhraṃśanam na,
suhṛdbhiḥ vinābhavaḥ na (asti).
(api tu) imam ramaṇīyam girim dṛṣṭvā me manaḥ bādhate.
3. O auspicious one, neither the loss of my kingdom nor separation from my friends troubles me. Seeing this beautiful mountain, my mind is indeed troubled.
पश्येममचलं भद्रे नानाद्विजगणायुतम् ।
शिखरैः खमिवोद्विद्धैर्धातुमद्भिर्विभूषितम् ॥४॥
4. paśyemamacalaṃ bhadre nānādvijagaṇāyutam ,
śikharaiḥ khamivodviddhairdhātumadbhirvibhūṣitam.
4. paśya imam acalam bhadre nānādvijagaṇāyutam śikharaiḥ
kham iva uddviddhaiḥ dhātumatbhiḥ vibhūṣitam
4. bhadre,
nānādvijagaṇāyutam,
kham iva uddviddhaiḥ dhātumatbhiḥ śikharaiḥ vibhūṣitam imam acalam paśya.
4. O auspicious one, behold this immovable mountain, filled with various flocks of birds, and adorned with peaks that seem to pierce the sky, rich in minerals.
के चिद् रजतसंकाशाः के चित् क्षतजसंनिभाः ।
पीतमाञ्जिष्ठवर्णाश्च के चिन्मणिवरप्रभाः ॥५॥
5. ke cid rajatasaṃkāśāḥ ke cit kṣatajasaṃnibhāḥ ,
pītamāñjiṣṭhavarṇāśca ke cinmaṇivaraprabhāḥ.

5. Some appear like silver, others like blood. Still others possess yellowish-madder hues, while some shine with the brilliance of excellent jewels.
पुष्यार्ककेतुकाभाश्च के चिज्ज्योती रसप्रभाः ।
विराजन्ते ऽचलेन्द्रस्य देशा धातुविभूषिताः ॥६॥
6. puṣyārkaketukābhāśca ke cijjyotī rasaprabhāḥ ,
virājante'calendrasya deśā dhātuvibhūṣitāḥ.

virājante acalendrasya deśāḥ dhātuvibhūṣitāḥ

6. Some gleam like the Puṣya constellation, the sun, and Ketu, while others shine with luminous, essential brilliance. The mineral-adorned regions of the king of mountains splendidly appear.
नानामृगगणद्वीपितरक्ष्वृक्षगणैर्वृतः ।
अदुष्टैर्भात्ययं शैलो बहुपक्षिसमाकुलः ॥७॥
7. nānāmṛgagaṇadvīpitarakṣvṛkṣagaṇairvṛtaḥ ,
aduṣṭairbhātyayaṃ śailo bahupakṣisamākulaḥ.
7. nānāmṛgagaṇadvīpitarakṣvṛkṣagaṇaiḥ vṛtaḥ
aduṣṭaiḥ bhāti ayam śailaḥ bahupaksisamākulaḥ

aduṣṭaiḥ vṛtaḥ bahupaksisamākulaḥ bhāti
7. This mountain shines beautifully, surrounded by various groups of deer, leopards, hyenas, and bears, populated by harmless creatures, and teeming with numerous birds.
आम्रजम्ब्वसनैर्लोध्रैः प्रियालैः पनसैर्धवैः ।
अङ्कोलैर्भव्यतिनिशैर्बिल्वतिन्दुकवेणुभिः ॥८॥
8. āmrajambvasanairlodhraiḥ priyālaiḥ panasairdhavaiḥ ,
aṅkolairbhavyatiniśairbilvatindukaveṇubhiḥ.

dhavaiḥ aṅkolaiḥ bhavyatiniśaiḥ bilvatindukaveṇubhiḥ

8. (The mountain is abundant) with mangoes, rose-apples, "asana" trees, "lodhra" trees, "priyāla" trees, jackfruit trees, "dhava" trees, "aṅkola" trees, "bhavya" trees, "tiniśa" trees, bael trees, "tinduka" trees, and bamboos.
काश्मर्यरिष्टवरणैर्मधूकैस्तिलकैस्तथा ।
बदर्यामलकैर्नीपैर्वेत्रधन्वनबीजकैः ॥९॥
9. kāśmaryariṣṭavaraṇairmadhūkaistilakaistathā ,
badaryāmalakairnīpairvetradhanvanabījakaiḥ.
9. kāśmaryāriṣṭavaraṇaiḥ madhūkaiḥ tilakaiḥ tathā
badaryāmalakaiḥ nīpaiḥ vetradhanvanabījakaiḥ

badaryāmalakaiḥ nīpaiḥ vetradhanvanabījakaiḥ
9. With Kāśmarya, Ariṣṭa, Varaṇa, Madhūka, and Tilaka trees, as well as Badarī, Āmalaka, Nīpa, Vetra, Dhanvana, and Bījaka trees.
पुष्पवद्भिः फलोपेतैश्छायावद्भिर्मनोरमैः ।
एवमादिभिराकीर्णः श्रियं पुष्यत्ययं गिरिः ॥१०॥
10. puṣpavadbhiḥ phalopetaiśchāyāvadbhirmanoramaiḥ ,
evamādibhirākīrṇaḥ śriyaṃ puṣyatyayaṃ giriḥ.
10. puṣpavadbhiḥ phalopetaiḥ chāyāvadbhiḥ manoramaiḥ
evamādibhiḥ ākīrṇaḥ śriyam puṣyati ayam giriḥ
10. ayam giriḥ evamādibhiḥ ākīrṇaḥ puṣpavadbhiḥ
phalopetaiḥ chāyāvadbhiḥ manoramaiḥ śriyam puṣyati
10. Filled with these and similar trees - which are full of flowers, laden with fruit, shady, and delightful - this mountain enhances its splendor.
शैलप्रस्थेषु रम्येषु पश्येमान् कामहर्षणान् ।
किन्नरान्द्वंद्वशो भद्रे रममाणान्मनस्विनः ॥११॥
11. śailaprastheṣu ramyeṣu paśyemān kāmaharṣaṇān ,
kinnarāndvaṃdvaśo bhadre ramamāṇānmanasvinaḥ.
11. śailapratheṣu ramyeṣu paśya imān kāmaharṣaṇān
kinnarān dvandvaśaḥ bhadre ramamāṇān manasvinaḥ
11. bhadre ramyeṣu śailapratheṣu dvandvaśaḥ ramamāṇān
kāmaharṣaṇān manasvinaḥ imān kinnarān paśya
11. O auspicious one, behold these charming Kinnaras, high-minded and sporting in pairs, who delight the senses, on the beautiful mountain slopes.
शाखावसक्तान् खड्गांश्च प्रवराण्यम्बराणि च ।
पश्य विद्याधरस्त्रीणां क्रीडेद्देशान्मनोरमान् ॥१२॥
12. śākhāvasaktān khaḍgāṃśca pravarāṇyambarāṇi ca ,
paśya vidyādharastrīṇāṃ krīḍeddeśānmanoramān.
12. śākhāvasaktān khaḍgān ca pravarāṇi ambarāṇi ca
paśya vidyādharastrīṇām krīḍeddeśān manoramān
12. śākhāvasaktān khaḍgān ca pravarāṇi ambarāṇi ca

12. And behold the swords and splendid garments hanging from the branches, as well as the delightful pleasure spots of the Vidyādhara women.
जलप्रपातैरुद्भेदैर्निष्यन्दैश्च क्व चित् क्व चित् ।
स्रवद्भिर्भात्ययं शैलः स्रवन्मद इव द्विपः ॥१३॥
13. jalaprapātairudbhedairniṣyandaiśca kva cit kva cit ,
sravadbhirbhātyayaṃ śailaḥ sravanmada iva dvipaḥ.
13. jalaprapātaiḥ udbhedaiḥ niṣyandaiḥ ca kva cit kva cit
sravadbhiḥ bhāti ayam śailaḥ sravanmadaḥ iva dvipaḥ
13. ayam śailaḥ jalaprapātaiḥ udbhedaiḥ ca niṣyandaiḥ kva
cit kva cit sravadbhiḥ sravanmadaḥ dvipaḥ iva bhāti
13. This mountain looks splendid, with waterfalls, gushing springs, and trickles flowing here and there, just like an elephant with rut flowing.
गुहासमीरणो गन्धान्नानापुष्पभवान् वहन् ।
घ्राणतर्पणमभ्येत्य कं नरं न प्रहर्षयेत् ॥१४॥
14. guhāsamīraṇo gandhānnānāpuṣpabhavān vahan ,
ghrāṇatarpaṇamabhyetya kaṃ naraṃ na praharṣayet.
14. guhāsamīraṇaḥ gandhān nānāpuṣpabhavān vahan
ghrāṇatarpaṇam abhyetya kam naram na praharṣayet
14. guhāsamīraṇaḥ nānāpuṣpabhavān gandhān vahan

14. The breeze from the caves, carrying fragrances born of various flowers and thus satisfying the sense of smell, what man would it not delight?
यदीह शरदो ऽनेकास्त्वया सार्धमनिन्दिते ।
लक्ष्मणेन च वत्स्यामि न मां शोकः प्रधक्ष्यति ॥१५॥
15. yadīha śarado'nekāstvayā sārdhamanindite ,
lakṣmaṇena ca vatsyāmi na māṃ śokaḥ pradhakṣyati.
15. yadi iha śaradaḥ anekāḥ tvayā sārdham anindite
lakṣmaṇena ca vatsyāmi na mām śokaḥ pradhakṣyati
15. anindite yadi iha tvayā ca lakṣmaṇena sārdham
anekāḥ śaradaḥ vatsyāmi śokaḥ mām na pradhakṣyati
15. O blameless one, if I dwell here with you and Lakṣmaṇa for many years, then grief will not consume me.
बहुपुष्पफले रम्ये नानाद्विजगणायुते ।
विचित्रशिखरे ह्यस्मिन् रतवानस्मि भामिनि ॥१६॥
16. bahupuṣpaphale ramye nānādvijagaṇāyute ,
vicitraśikhare hyasmin ratavānasmi bhāmini.
16. bahupuṣpaphale ramye nānādvijagaṇāyute
vicitraśikhare hi asmin ratavān asmi bhāmini
16. bhāmini asmin bahupuṣpaphale ramye
nānādvijagaṇāyute vicitraśikhare hi ratavān asmi
16. O beautiful one, I have truly found delight on this mountain, which is rich in many flowers and fruits, charming, teeming with various kinds of birds, and adorned with colorful peaks.
अनेन वनवासेन मया प्राप्तं फलद्वयम् ।
पितुश्चानृणता धर्मे भरतस्य प्रियं तथा ॥१७॥
17. anena vanavāsena mayā prāptaṃ phaladvayam ,
pituścānṛṇatā dharme bharatasya priyaṃ tathā.
17. anena vanavāsena mayā prāptam phala-dvayam
pituḥ ca anṛṇatā dharme bharatasya priyam tathā
17. mayā anena vanavāsena phala-dvayam prāptam.
pituḥ dharme anṛṇatā ca tathā bharatasya priyam (prāptam).
17. Through this forest exile, two benefits have been attained by me: freedom from debt to my father regarding his moral duty (dharma), and also Bharata's happiness.
वैदेहि रमसे कच्चिच्चित्रकूटे मया सह ।
पश्यन्ती विविधान्भावान्मनोवाक्कायसंयतान् ॥१८॥
18. vaidehi ramase kacciccitrakūṭe mayā saha ,
paśyantī vividhānbhāvānmanovākkāyasaṃyatān.
18. vaidehi ramase kaccit citrakūṭe mayā saha
paśyantī vividhān bhāvān manaḥ-vāk-kāya-saṃyatān
18. vaidehi! kaccit mayā saha citrakūṭe
manaḥ-vāk-kāya-saṃyatān vividhān bhāvān paśyantī ramase?
18. O Vaidehi, do you indeed delight in Citrakūṭa with me, beholding various aspects disciplined by mind, speech, and body?
इदमेवामृतं प्राहू राज्ञां राजर्षयः परे ।
वनवासं भवार्थाय प्रेत्य मे प्रपितामहाः ॥१९॥
19. idamevāmṛtaṃ prāhū rājñāṃ rājarṣayaḥ pare ,
vanavāsaṃ bhavārthāya pretya me prapitāmahāḥ.
19. idam eva amṛtam prāhuḥ rājñām rājarṣayaḥ pare
vanavāsam bhava-arthāya pretya me prapitāmahāḥ
19. me pare rājñām rājarṣayaḥ prapitāmahāḥ idam vanavāsam eva pretya bhava-arthāya amṛtam prāhuḥ.
19. My great-grandfathers, who were royal sages (rājarṣayaḥ) and supreme among kings, declared this very forest dwelling to be nectar for the sake of existence (bhavārthāya) after death.
शिलाः शैलस्य शोभन्ते विशालाः शतशो ऽभितः ।
बहुला बहुलैर्वर्णैर्नीलपीतसितारुणैः ॥२०॥
20. śilāḥ śailasya śobhante viśālāḥ śataśo'bhitaḥ ,
bahulā bahulairvarṇairnīlapītasitāruṇaiḥ.
20. śilāḥ śailasya śobhante viśālāḥ śataśaḥ abhitaḥ
bahulāḥ bahulaiḥ varṇaiḥ nīla-pīta-sita-aruṇaiḥ
20. śailasya viśālāḥ śilāḥ abhitaḥ śataśaḥ bahulaiḥ nīla-pīta-sita-aruṇaiḥ varṇaiḥ bahulāḥ śobhante.
20. Hundreds of large stones of the mountain gleam all around, abundant with numerous colors - blue, yellow, white, and red.
निशि भान्त्यचलेन्द्रस्य हुताशनशिखा इव ।
ओषध्यः स्वप्रभा लक्ष्म्या भ्राजमानाः सहस्रशः ॥२१॥
21. niśi bhāntyacalendrasya hutāśanaśikhā iva ,
oṣadhyaḥ svaprabhā lakṣmyā bhrājamānāḥ sahasraśaḥ.
21. niśi bhānti acalendrasya hutāśanaśikhā iva
oṣadhyaḥ svaprabhā lakṣmyā bhrājamānāḥ sahasraśaḥ
21. niśi acalendrasya sahasraśaḥ svaprabhā lakṣmyā
bhrājamānāḥ oṣadhyaḥ hutāśanaśikhā iva bhānti
21. At night, thousands of shining medicinal herbs, gleaming with their own splendid light, appear like the flames of a fire on the lord of mountains.
के चित् क्षयनिभा देशाः के चिदुद्यानसंनिभाः ।
के चिदेकशिला भान्ति पर्वतस्यास्य भामिनि ॥२२॥
22. ke cit kṣayanibhā deśāḥ ke cidudyānasaṃnibhāḥ ,
ke cidekaśilā bhānti parvatasyāsya bhāmini.
22. ke cit kṣayanibhāḥ deśāḥ ke cit udyānasaṃnibhāḥ
ke cit ekaśilāḥ bhānti parvatasya asya bhāmini
22. bhāmini asya parvatasya ke cit deśāḥ kṣayanibhāḥ
ke cit udyānasaṃnibhāḥ ke cit ekaśilāḥ bhānti
22. O beautiful one, some parts of this mountain appear like dwellings, some like gardens, and some shine like monolithic rocks.
भित्त्वेव वसुधां भाति चित्रकूटः समुत्थितः ।
चित्रकूटस्य कूटो ऽसौ दृश्यते सर्वतः शिवः ॥२३॥
23. bhittveva vasudhāṃ bhāti citrakūṭaḥ samutthitaḥ ,
citrakūṭasya kūṭo'sau dṛśyate sarvataḥ śivaḥ.
23. bhittvā iva vasudhām bhāti citrakūṭaḥ samutthitaḥ
citrakūṭasya kūṭaḥ asau dṛśyate sarvataḥ śivaḥ
23. vasudhām bhittvā iva samutthitaḥ citrakūṭaḥ bhāti
asau citrakūṭasya kūṭaḥ sarvataḥ śivaḥ dṛśyate
23. Mount Citrakūṭa appears to have risen, as if splitting the earth. This peak of Citrakūṭa is seen from all sides as beautiful and auspicious.
कुष्ठपुंनागतगरभूर्जपत्रोत्तरच्छदान् ।
कामिनां स्वास्तरान्पश्य कुशेशयदलायुतान् ॥२४॥
24. kuṣṭhapuṃnāgatagarabhūrjapatrottaracchadān ,
kāmināṃ svāstarānpaśya kuśeśayadalāyutān.

kāminām svāstarān paśya kuśeśayadalāyutān

24. Behold the beds of lovers, which have coverings of kuṣṭha, puṃnāga, tagara, and birch leaves (bhūrjapatra), and are adorned with lotus petals.
मृदिताश्चापविद्धाश्च दृश्यन्ते कमलस्रजः ।
कामिभिर्वनिते पश्य फलानि विविधानि च ॥२५॥
25. mṛditāścāpaviddhāśca dṛśyante kamalasrajaḥ ,
kāmibhirvanite paśya phalāni vividhāni ca.
25. mṛditāḥ ca apaviddhāḥ ca dṛśyante kamalasrajaḥ
kāmibhiḥ vanite paśya phalāni vividhāni ca
25. vanite paśya kāmibhiḥ mṛditāḥ ca apaviddhāḥ
ca kamalasrajaḥ ca vividhāni phalāni dṛśyante
25. O lady, behold how lotus garlands, crushed and discarded by lovers, are visible, along with various fruits.
वस्वौकसारां नलिनीमत्येतीवोत्तरान् कुरून् ।
पर्वतश्चित्रकूटो ऽसौ बहुमूलफलोदकः ॥२६॥
26. vasvaukasārāṃ nalinīmatyetīvottarān kurūn ,
parvataścitrakūṭo'sau bahumūlaphalodakaḥ.
26. vasvaukasārām nalinīm ati eti iva uttarān kurūn
parvataḥ citrakūṭaḥ asau bahumūlaphalodakaḥ
26. asau citrakūṭaḥ parvataḥ bahumūlaphalodakaḥ
vasvaukasārām nalinīm uttarān kurūn iva ati eti
26. This Citrakūṭa mountain, abundant in many roots, fruits, and water, seems to surpass the Nalini pond of Vāsaukasara, and even the northern Kurus.
इमं तु कालं वनिते विजह्रिवांस्त्वया च सीते सह लक्ष्मणेन च ।
रतिं प्रपत्स्ये कुलधर्मवर्धिनीं सतां पथि स्वैर्नियमैः परैः स्थितः ॥२७॥
27. imaṃ tu kālaṃ vanite vijahrivāṃstvayā ca sīte saha lakṣmaṇena ca ,
ratiṃ prapatsye kuladharmavardhinīṃ satāṃ pathi svairniyamaiḥ paraiḥ sthitaḥ.
27. imam tu kālam vanite vijahrivān tvayā
ca sīte saha lakṣmaṇena ca ratim
prapatye kuladharmavardhinīm satām
pathi svaiḥ niyamaiḥ paraiḥ sthitaḥ
27. vanite sīte tvayā ca lakṣmaṇena ca
saha imam kālam vijahrivān satām
pathi svaiḥ paraiḥ niyamaiḥ sthitaḥ
kuladharmavardhinīm ratim tu prapatye
27. But, O Sītā, my lady, having spent this time with you and Lakṣmaṇa, I, firmly established on the path of the virtuous through my own supreme observances, shall attain a joy that fosters family principles (dharma).
