तस्मिन्नेव ततः काले राजपुत्री त्वनिन्दिता ।
रूपयौवनसंपन्नं भूषणोत्तमभूषितम् ॥१॥

1. At that very moment, the blameless princess (Sītā was present), and (Rāvaṇa, who was) endowed with beauty and youth, splendidly adorned with the finest ornaments (approached).

प्रावेपत वरारोहा प्रवाते कदली यथा ॥२॥
2. tato dṛṣṭvaiva vaidehī rāvaṇaṃ rākṣasādhipam ,
prāvepata varārohā pravāte kadalī yathā.

2. Then, upon seeing Ravana, the lord of the rākṣasas, Sita, whose hips were exquisitely formed, began to tremble intensely, just like a plantain tree swaying in a strong gust of wind.
ऊरुभ्यामुदरं छाद्य बाहुभ्यां च पयोधरौ ।
उपविष्टा विशालाक्षी रुदन्ती वरवर्णिनी ॥३॥
3. ūrubhyāmudaraṃ chādya bāhubhyāṃ ca payodharau ,
upaviṣṭā viśālākṣī rudantī varavarṇinī.

3. The wide-eyed, beautiful-complexioned Sita sat weeping, having covered her abdomen with her thighs and her breasts with her arms.
दशग्रीवस्तु वैदेहीं रक्षितां राक्षसीगणैः ।
ददर्श दीनां दुःखार्तं नावं सन्नामिवार्णवे ॥४॥
4. daśagrīvastu vaidehīṃ rakṣitāṃ rākṣasīgaṇaiḥ ,
dadarśa dīnāṃ duḥkhārtaṃ nāvaṃ sannāmivārṇave.

4. But the ten-necked (Dashagriva) saw Sita, who was guarded by hordes of rākṣasīs, looking wretched and pained by suffering, like a sinking ship in the ocean.
असंवृतायामासीनां धरण्यां संशितव्रताम् ।
छिन्नां प्रपतितां भूमौ शाखामिव वनस्पतेः ।
मलमण्डनदिग्धाङ्गीं मण्डनार्हाममण्डिताम् ॥५॥
5. asaṃvṛtāyāmāsīnāṃ dharaṇyāṃ saṃśitavratām ,
chinnāṃ prapatitāṃ bhūmau śākhāmiva vanaspateḥ ,
malamaṇḍanadigdhāṅgīṃ maṇḍanārhāmamaṇḍitām.
5. asaṃvṛtāyām āsīnām dharaṇyām
saṃśita-vratām chinnām prapatitām bhūmau
śākhām iva vanaspateḥ mala-maṇḍana-digdha-aṅgīm
maṇḍana-arhām amaṇḍitām

5. He saw her sitting on the uncovered ground, a woman of firm (vrata) vows, like a severed branch that has fallen to the earth from a tree. Her body was smeared with dirt instead of ornaments, though she was worthy of adornment yet remained unadorned.
समीपं राजसिंहस्य रामस्य विदितात्मनः ।
संकल्पहयसंयुक्तैर्यान्तीमिव मनोरथैः ॥६॥
6. samīpaṃ rājasiṃhasya rāmasya viditātmanaḥ ,
saṃkalpahayasaṃyuktairyāntīmiva manorathaiḥ.

saṅkalpahayasaṃyuktaiḥ yāntīm iva manorathaiḥ

6. She seemed to be moving towards the vicinity of Rama, the lion among kings, whose true nature (ātman) was known, as if carried by wishes yoked to the horses of resolve.
शुष्यन्तीं रुदतीमेकां ध्यानशोकपरायणाम् ।
दुःखस्यान्तमपश्यन्तीं रामां राममनुव्रताम् ॥७॥
7. śuṣyantīṃ rudatīmekāṃ dhyānaśokaparāyaṇām ,
duḥkhasyāntamapaśyantīṃ rāmāṃ rāmamanuvratām.

duḥkhasya antam apaśyantīm rāmām rāmam anuvratām

7. She was wasting away, weeping, solitary, deeply absorbed in contemplation (dhyāna) and sorrow, and could not see an end to her suffering. She was Sita, ever devoted to Rama.
वेष्टमानामथाविष्टां पन्नगेन्द्रवधूमिव ।
धूप्यमानां ग्रहेणेव रोहिणीं धूमकेतुना ॥८॥
8. veṣṭamānāmathāviṣṭāṃ pannagendravadhūmiva ,
dhūpyamānāṃ graheṇeva rohiṇīṃ dhūmaketunā.

8. She was writhing and distraught, like the wife of the chief of serpents, or like the star Rohini afflicted by a celestial body or a comet.
वृत्तशीले कुले जातामाचारवति धार्मिके ।
पुनः संस्कारमापन्नां जातमिव च दुष्कुले ॥९॥
9. vṛttaśīle kule jātāmācāravati dhārmike ,
punaḥ saṃskāramāpannāṃ jātamiva ca duṣkule.

9. She who was born into a family of good conduct, upholding proper customs and righteousness (dharma), was now, as it were, undergoing a second initiation (saṃskāra), like one born into a degraded family.
सन्नामिव महाकीर्तिं श्रद्धामिव विमानिताम् ।
प्रज्ञामिव परिक्षीणामाशां प्रतिहतामिव ॥१०॥
10. sannāmiva mahākīrtiṃ śraddhāmiva vimānitām ,
prajñāmiva parikṣīṇāmāśāṃ pratihatāmiva.

10. Like a great reputation that has waned, like faith that has been dishonored, like wisdom that has completely diminished, or like hope that has been thwarted.
आयतीमिव विध्वस्तामाज्ञां प्रतिहतामिव ।
दीप्तामिव दिशं काले पूजामपहृतामिव ॥११॥
11. āyatīmiva vidhvastāmājñāṃ pratihatāmiva ,
dīptāmiva diśaṃ kāle pūjāmapahṛtāmiva.

11. Like a future that has been destroyed, like a command that has been thwarted, like a radiant direction dimmed by time, or like worship that has been stolen away.
पद्मिनीमिव विध्वस्तां हतशूरां चमूमिव ।
प्रभामिव तपोध्वस्तामुपक्षीणामिवापगाम् ॥१२॥
12. padminīmiva vidhvastāṃ hataśūrāṃ camūmiva ,
prabhāmiva tapodhvastāmupakṣīṇāmivāpagām.

12. Like a lotus pond that has been ruined, like an army whose heroes are slain, like radiance destroyed by intense heat, or like a river that has dwindled away.
वेदीमिव परामृष्टां शान्तामग्निशिखामिव ।
पौर्णमासीमिव निशां राहुग्रस्तेन्दुमण्डलाम् ॥१३॥
13. vedīmiva parāmṛṣṭāṃ śāntāmagniśikhāmiva ,
paurṇamāsīmiva niśāṃ rāhugrastendumaṇḍalām.
13. vedīm iva parāmṛṣṭām śāntām agniśikhām iva
paurṇamāsīm iva niśām rāhugrastendumāṇḍalām

13. Like an altar that has been defiled, like a fire-flame that has been extinguished, or like a full moon night whose moon's disk has been seized by Rāhu.
उत्कृष्टपर्णकमलां वित्रासितविहंगमाम् ।
हस्तिहस्तपरामृष्टामाकुलां पद्मिनीमिव ॥१४॥
14. utkṛṣṭaparṇakamalāṃ vitrāsitavihaṃgamām ,
hastihastaparāmṛṣṭāmākulāṃ padminīmiva.

14. She was like a lotus pond (padminī) whose lotus leaves have been uprooted, whose birds have been frightened away, which has been ravaged by an elephant's trunk, and is agitated.
पतिशोकातुरां शुष्कां नदीं विस्रावितामिव ।
परया मृजया हीनां कृष्णपक्षे निशामिव ॥१५॥
15. patiśokāturāṃ śuṣkāṃ nadīṃ visrāvitāmiva ,
parayā mṛjayā hīnāṃ kṛṣṇapakṣe niśāmiva.

parayā mr̥jayā hīnām kr̥ṣṇapakṣe niśām iva

15. Afflicted by sorrow for her husband (pati), she was like a dried-up river whose waters have been drained away, and like a night in the dark fortnight, devoid of great splendor.
सुकुमारीं सुजाताङ्गीं रत्नगर्भगृहोचिताम् ।
तप्यमानामिवोष्णेन मृणालीमचिरोद्धृताम् ॥१६॥
16. sukumārīṃ sujātāṅgīṃ ratnagarbhagṛhocitām ,
tapyamānāmivoṣṇena mṛṇālīmaciroddhṛtām.

tapyāmānām iva uṣṇena mr̥ṇālīm aciroddhr̥tām

16. She (Sītā), who was very delicate, with beautiful limbs, and accustomed to inner chambers filled with jewels, was like a lotus stalk (mr̥ṇālī) that had just been uprooted and was being scorched by the heat.
गृहीतामालितां स्तम्भे यूथपेन विनाकृताम् ।
निःश्वसन्तीं सुदुःखार्तां गजराजवधूमिव ॥१७॥
17. gṛhītāmālitāṃ stambhe yūthapena vinākṛtām ,
niḥśvasantīṃ suduḥkhārtāṃ gajarājavadhūmiva.

17. She was like a female elephant queen (gajarājavadhū) that is captured and tied to a pillar, separated from her herd leader, sighing, and greatly tormented by sorrow.
एकया दीर्घया वेण्या शोभमानामयत्नतः ।
नीलया नीरदापाये वनराज्या महीमिव ॥१८॥
18. ekayā dīrghayā veṇyā śobhamānāmayatnataḥ ,
nīlayā nīradāpāye vanarājyā mahīmiva.

18. Adorned effortlessly by a single, long, dark braid, she appeared like the earth (mahī) graced by a line of forests at the end of the rainy season.
उपवासेन शोकेन ध्यानेन च भयेन च ।
परिक्षीणां कृशां दीनामल्पाहारां तपोधनाम् ॥१९॥
19. upavāsena śokena dhyānena ca bhayena ca ,
parikṣīṇāṃ kṛśāṃ dīnāmalpāhārāṃ tapodhanām.

parikṣīṇām kṛśām dīnām alpāhārām tapodhanām
19. She was greatly emaciated, thin, distressed, subsisting on little food, and rich in spiritual austerity (tapas), all caused by fasting, grief, meditation (dhyāna), and fear.
आयाचमानां दुःखार्तां प्राञ्जलिं देवतामिव ।
भावेन रघुमुख्यस्य दशग्रीवपराभवम् ॥२०॥
20. āyācamānāṃ duḥkhārtāṃ prāñjaliṃ devatāmiva ,
bhāvena raghumukhyasya daśagrīvaparābhavam.
20. āyācamānām duḥkhārtām prāñjalim devatām iva
bhāvena raghumukhyasya daśagrīvaparābhavam
20. She was beseeching, tormented by sorrow, with folded hands like a deity, anticipating the defeat of Daśagrīva (Rāvaṇa) through the resolve of Rāma, the foremost of the Raghus.
समीक्षमाणां रुदतीमनिन्दितां सुपक्ष्मताम्रायतशुक्ललोचनाम् ।
अनुव्रतां राममतीव मैथिलीं प्रलोभयामास वधाय रावणः ॥२१॥
21. samīkṣamāṇāṃ rudatīmaninditāṃ supakṣmatāmrāyataśuklalocanām ,
anuvratāṃ rāmamatīva maithilīṃ pralobhayāmāsa vadhāya rāvaṇaḥ.

21. Rāvaṇa tempted Maithilī (Sītā) to her destruction, even as she looked [forward to Rāma's arrival], wept, was blameless, possessed beautiful eyelashes and long, copper-red and white eyes, and was exceedingly faithful to Rāma.
