भुक्त्वा तु भाषितं वाक्यं मम राम शुभाक्षरम् ।
प्राञ्जलिः प्रत्युवाचेदं स स्वर्गी रघुनन्दन ॥१॥
1. bhuktvā tu bhāṣitaṃ vākyaṃ mama rāma śubhākṣaram ,
prāñjaliḥ pratyuvācedaṃ sa svargī raghunandana.

1. O Rāma, O descendant of Raghu, after eating, that celestial being, with folded hands, then replied to me with these auspicious words.
शृणु ब्रह्मन्यथावृत्तं ममैतत् सुखदुःखयोः ।
दुरतिक्रमणीयं हि यथा पृच्छसि मां द्विज ॥२॥
2. śṛṇu brahmanyathāvṛttaṃ mamaitat sukhaduḥkhayoḥ ,
duratikramaṇīyaṃ hi yathā pṛcchasi māṃ dvija.
2. śṛṇu brahman yathāvṛttam mama etat sukhaduḥkhayoḥ
duratikramaṇīyam hi yathā pṛcchasi mām dvija

2. O (brahman), listen to this true account of my joys and sorrows, which is indeed inescapable, as you question me, O twice-born (dvija).
पुरा वैदर्भको राजा पिता मम महायशाः ।
सुदेव इति विख्यातस्त्रिषु लोकेषु वीर्यवान् ॥३॥
3. purā vaidarbhako rājā pitā mama mahāyaśāḥ ,
sudeva iti vikhyātastriṣu lokeṣu vīryavān.

3. Formerly, my father, a king of Vidarbha, was greatly renowned. He was known as Sudeva, famous for his valor throughout the three worlds.
तस्य पुत्रद्वयं ब्रह्मन्द्वाभ्यां स्त्रीभ्यामजायत ।
अहं श्वेत इति ख्यातो यवीयान् सुरथो ऽभवत् ॥४॥
4. tasya putradvayaṃ brahmandvābhyāṃ strībhyāmajāyata ,
ahaṃ śveta iti khyāto yavīyān suratho'bhavat.
4. tasya putradvayam brahman dvābhyām strībhyām ajāyata
aham śveta iti khyātaḥ yavīyān surathaḥ abhavat
4. brahman tasya dvābhyām strībhyām putradvayam ajāyata.

4. O (brahman), two sons were born to him from two wives. I was named Śveta, and the younger one became Suratha.
ततः पितरि स्वर्याते पौरा मामभ्यषेचयन् ।
तत्राहं कृतवान् राज्यं धर्मेण सुसमाहितः ॥५॥
5. tataḥ pitari svaryāte paurā māmabhyaṣecayan ,
tatrāhaṃ kṛtavān rājyaṃ dharmeṇa susamāhitaḥ.
5. tataḥ pitari svaryāte paurāḥ mām abhyaṣecayan
tatra aham kṛtavān rājyam dharmeṇa susamāhitaḥ
5. tataḥ pitari svaryāte,
paurāḥ mām abhyaṣecayan.
tatra aham susamāhitaḥ dharmeṇa rājyam kṛtavān.
5. Thereafter, when my father had ascended to heaven, the citizens crowned me. There, I diligently governed the kingdom according to righteous principles (dharma).
एवं वर्षसहस्राणि समतीतानि सुव्रत ।
राज्यं कारयतो ब्रह्मन्प्रजा धर्मेण रक्षतः ॥६॥
6. evaṃ varṣasahasrāṇi samatītāni suvrata ,
rājyaṃ kārayato brahmanprajā dharmeṇa rakṣataḥ.
6. evam varṣasahasrāṇi samatītāni suvrata rājyam
kārayataḥ brahman prajāḥ dharmeṇa rakṣataḥ
6. suvrata brahman evam varṣasahasrāṇi samatītāni
rājyam kārayataḥ dharmeṇa prajāḥ rakṣataḥ
6. O brahmin, observer of good vows, thus thousands of years passed as I ruled the kingdom and protected the subjects in accordance with natural law (dharma).
सो ऽहं निमित्ते कस्मिंश्चिद्विज्ञातायुर्द्विजोत्तम ।
कालधर्मं हृदि न्यस्य ततो वनमुपागमम् ॥७॥
7. so'haṃ nimitte kasmiṃścidvijñātāyurdvijottama ,
kāladharmaṃ hṛdi nyasya tato vanamupāgamam.
7. saḥ aham nimitte kasmincit vijñātāyuḥ dvijottama
kāladharmam hṛdi nyasya tataḥ vanam upāgamam
7. dvijottama saḥ aham kasmincit nimitte vijñātāyuḥ
hṛdi kāladharmam nyasya tataḥ vanam upāgamam
7. O best among the twice-born (dvija), I, having learned of my destined lifespan through some omen, accepted the natural law (dharma) of time in my heart, and then went to the forest.
सो ऽहं वनमिदं दुर्गं मृगपक्षिविवर्जितम् ।
तपश्चर्तुं प्रविष्टो ऽस्मि समीपे सरसः शुभे ॥८॥
8. so'haṃ vanamidaṃ durgaṃ mṛgapakṣivivarjitam ,
tapaścartuṃ praviṣṭo'smi samīpe sarasaḥ śubhe.
8. saḥ aham vanam idam durgam mṛgapakṣivivarjitam
tapaḥ cartum praviṣṭaḥ asmi samīpe sarasaḥ śubhe
8. saḥ aham idam durgam mṛgapakṣivivarjitam vanam
praviṣṭaḥ asmi śubhe sarasaḥ samīpe tapaḥ cartum
8. I entered this formidable forest, devoid of deer and birds, to undertake spiritual austerity (tapas) near a beautiful lake.
भ्रातरं सुरथं राज्ये अभिषिच्य नराधिपम् ।
इदं सरः समासाद्य तपस्तप्तं मया चिरम् ॥९॥
9. bhrātaraṃ surathaṃ rājye abhiṣicya narādhipam ,
idaṃ saraḥ samāsādya tapastaptaṃ mayā ciram.
9. bhrātaram suratham rājye abhiṣicya narādhipam
idam saraḥ samāsādya tapaḥ taptam mayā ciram
9. rājye bhrātaram suratham narādhipam abhiṣicya
idam saraḥ samāsādya mayā ciram tapaḥ taptam
9. Having consecrated my brother Suratha as king (narādhipa) in the kingdom, and having reached this lake, I performed spiritual austerity (tapas) for a long time.
सो ऽहं वर्षसहस्राणि तपस्त्रीणि महामुने ।
तप्त्वा सुदुष्करं प्राप्तो ब्रह्मलोकमनुत्तमम् ॥१०॥
10. so'haṃ varṣasahasrāṇi tapastrīṇi mahāmune ,
taptvā suduṣkaraṃ prāpto brahmalokamanuttamam.
10. saḥ aham varṣa-sahasrāṇi tapaḥ trīṇi mahā-mune
taptvā su-duṣkaram prāptaḥ brahma-lokam anuttamam
10. mahā-mune,
aham trīṇi varṣa-sahasrāṇi su-duṣkaram tapaḥ taptvā,
anuttamam brahma-lokam prāptaḥ.
10. O great sage, having performed extremely arduous asceticism (tapas) for three thousand years, I attained the supreme world of Brahmā.
ततो मां स्वर्गसंस्थं वै क्षुत्पिपासे द्विजोत्तम ।
बाधेते परमोदार ततो ऽहं व्यथितेन्द्रियः ॥११॥
11. tato māṃ svargasaṃsthaṃ vai kṣutpipāse dvijottama ,
bādhete paramodāra tato'haṃ vyathitendriyaḥ.
11. tataḥ mām svarga-saṃstham vai kṣut-pipāse dvija-uttama
bādhete parama-udāra tataḥ aham vyathita-indriyaḥ
11. dvija-uttama,
parama-udāra,
tataḥ svarga-saṃstham mām kṣut-pipāse vai bādhete,
tataḥ aham vyathita-indriyaḥ.
11. Then, O best among the twice-born, O most generous one, hunger and thirst afflicted me, who was residing in heaven. Consequently, my senses became disturbed.
गत्वा त्रिभुवणश्रेष्ठं पितामहमुवाच ह ।
भगवन्ब्रह्मलोको ऽयं क्षुत्पिपासाविवर्जितः ॥१२॥
12. gatvā tribhuvaṇaśreṣṭhaṃ pitāmahamuvāca ha ,
bhagavanbrahmaloko'yaṃ kṣutpipāsāvivarjitaḥ.
12. gatvā tri-bhuvana-śreṣṭham pitā-maham uvāca ha
bhagavan brahma-lokaḥ ayam kṣut-pipāsā-vivarjitaḥ
12. gatvā,
tri-bhuvana-śreṣṭham pitā-maham ha uvāca: "bhagavan,
ayam brahma-lokaḥ kṣut-pipāsā-vivarjitaḥ.
"
12. Having gone, I addressed the Grandfather (Brahmā), who is supreme in the three worlds, saying, 'O venerable one (bhagavan), this world of Brahmā is devoid of hunger and thirst.'
कस्येयं कर्मणः प्राप्तिः क्षुत्पिपासावशो ऽस्मि यत् ।
आहारः कश्च मे देव तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥१३॥
13. kasyeyaṃ karmaṇaḥ prāptiḥ kṣutpipāsāvaśo'smi yat ,
āhāraḥ kaśca me deva tanme brūhi pitāmaha.
13. kasya iyam karmaṇaḥ prāptiḥ kṣut-pipāsā-avaśaḥ
asmi yat āhāraḥ ca me deva tat me brūhi pitā-maha
13. pitā-maha deva,
iyam prāptiḥ kasya karmaṇaḥ yat aham kṣut-pipāsā-avaśaḥ asmi? ca me āhāraḥ kaḥ? tat me brūhi.
13. To which deed (karma) is this attainment owed, by which I am subjected to hunger and thirst? And what is my food, O divine one? Please tell me that, O Grandfather (Brahmā).
पितामहस्तु मामाह तवाहारः सुदेवज ।
स्वादूनि स्वानि मांसानि तानि भक्षय नित्यशः ॥१४॥
14. pitāmahastu māmāha tavāhāraḥ sudevaja ,
svādūni svāni māṃsāni tāni bhakṣaya nityaśaḥ.
14. pitāmahaḥ tu mām āha tava āhāraḥ sudevaja
svādūni svāni māṃsāni tāni bhakṣaya nityaśaḥ
14. pitāmahaḥ tu mām āha sudevaja tava āhāraḥ
svāni svādūni māṃsāni tāni nityaśaḥ bhakṣaya
14. My grandfather said to me, 'O son of Sudeva, your food is your own delicious flesh; always consume it.'
स्वशरीरं त्वया पुष्टं कुर्वता तप उत्तमम् ।
अनुप्तं रोहते श्वेत न कदा चिन्महामते ॥१५॥
15. svaśarīraṃ tvayā puṣṭaṃ kurvatā tapa uttamam ,
anuptaṃ rohate śveta na kadā cinmahāmate.
15. svaśarīram tvayā puṣṭam kurvatā tapaḥ uttamam
anuptam rohate śveta na kadācit mahāmate
15. tvayā uttamam tapaḥ kurvatā svaśarīram puṣṭam
śveta mahāmate anuptam kadācit na rohate
15. While you nourish your own body by performing excellent austerity (tapas), O Śveta, that which is unsown never grows, O great-minded one.
दत्तं न ते ऽस्ति सूक्ष्मो ऽपि वने सत्त्वनिषेविते ।
तेन स्वर्गगतो वत्स बाध्यसे क्षुत्पिपासया ॥१६॥
16. dattaṃ na te'sti sūkṣmo'pi vane sattvaniṣevite ,
tena svargagato vatsa bādhyase kṣutpipāsayā.
16. dattam na te asti sūkṣmaḥ api vane sattvaniṣevite
tena svargagataḥ vatsa bādhyase kṣutpipāsayā
16. te vane sattvaniṣevite sūkṣmaḥ api dattam na asti
tena vatsa svargagataḥ kṣutpipāsayā bādhyase
16. Nothing, not even a tiny bit, was given by you in the forest teeming with living beings. Therefore, O child, though you have reached heaven, you are tormented by hunger and thirst.
स त्वं सुपुष्टमाहारैः स्वशरीरमनुत्तमम् ।
भक्षयस्वामृतरसं सा ते तृप्तिर्भविष्यति ॥१७॥
17. sa tvaṃ supuṣṭamāhāraiḥ svaśarīramanuttamam ,
bhakṣayasvāmṛtarasaṃ sā te tṛptirbhaviṣyati.
17. saḥ tvam supuṣṭam āhāraiḥ svaśarīram anuttamam
bhakṣayasva amṛtarasam sā te tṛptiḥ bhaviṣyati
17. saḥ tvam āhāraiḥ supuṣṭam anuttamam svaśarīram
amṛtarasam bhakṣayasva sā te tṛptiḥ bhaviṣyati
17. Therefore you, your own excellent body, well-nourished by various foods, consume as the essence of immortality (amṛtarasa). That will be your satisfaction.
यदा तु तद्वनं श्वेत अगस्त्यः सुमहानृषिः ।
आक्रमिष्यति दुर्धर्षस्तदा कृच्छाद्विमोक्ष्यसे ॥१८॥
18. yadā tu tadvanaṃ śveta agastyaḥ sumahānṛṣiḥ ,
ākramiṣyati durdharṣastadā kṛcchādvimokṣyase.
18. yadā tu tat vanam śveta agastyaḥ sumahān ṛṣiḥ
ākramiṣyati durdharṣaḥ tadā kṛcchrāt vimokṣyase
18. yadā tu sumahān durdharṣaḥ ṛṣiḥ agastyaḥ tat
śvetam vanam ākramiṣyati tadā kṛcchrāt vimokṣyase
18. Indeed, when the very great and irresistible sage Agastya approaches that white forest, then you will be liberated from hardship.
स हि तारयितुं सौम्य शक्तः सुरगणानपि ।
किं पुनस्त्वां महाबाहो क्षुत्पिपासावशं गतम् ॥१९॥
19. sa hi tārayituṃ saumya śaktaḥ suragaṇānapi ,
kiṃ punastvāṃ mahābāho kṣutpipāsāvaśaṃ gatam.
19. saḥ hi tārayitum saumya śaktaḥ suragaṇān api
kim punaḥ tvām mahābāho kṣutpipāsāvaśam gatam
19. saḥ hi saumya suragaṇān api tārayitum śaktaḥ
kim punaḥ mahābāho kṣutpipāsāvaśam gatam tvām
19. Indeed, O gentle one, he is capable of delivering even the hosts of gods. How much more, then, can he deliver you, O mighty-armed one, who have fallen under the sway of hunger and thirst?
सो ऽहं भगवतः श्रुत्वा देवदेवस्य निश्चयम् ।
आहारं गर्हितं कुर्मि स्वशरीरं द्विजोत्तम ॥२०॥
20. so'haṃ bhagavataḥ śrutvā devadevasya niścayam ,
āhāraṃ garhitaṃ kurmi svaśarīraṃ dvijottama.
20. saḥ aham bhagavataḥ śrutvā devadevasya niścayam
āhāram garhitam kurmi svaśarīram dvijottama
20. dvijottama saḥ aham bhagavataḥ devadevasya
niścayam śrutvā garhitam āhāram svaśarīram kurmi
20. O best among the twice-born, having heard the firm resolve of the worshipful God of gods, I (who am that very being) consume this reprehensible food for my own body.
बहून् वर्षगणान्ब्रह्मन्भुज्यमानमिदं मया ।
क्षयं नाभ्येति ब्रह्मर्षे तृप्तिश्चापि ममोत्तमा ॥२१॥
21. bahūn varṣagaṇānbrahmanbhujyamānamidaṃ mayā ,
kṣayaṃ nābhyeti brahmarṣe tṛptiścāpi mamottamā.
21. bahūn varṣagaṇān brahman bhujyamānam idam mayā kṣayam
na abhyeti brahmarṣe tṛptiḥ ca api mama uttamā
21. brahman brahmarṣe mayā bahūn varṣagaṇān bhujyamānam
idam na kṣayam abhyeti ca mama uttamā tṛptiḥ api
21. O Brahmin, though this (food) has been consumed by me for many years, it does not diminish, and my satisfaction (tṛpti) is also supreme, O Brahma-sage.
तस्य मे कृच्छ्रभूतस्य कृच्छ्रादस्माद्विमोक्षय ।
अन्येषामगतिर्ह्यत्र कुम्भयोनिमृते द्विजम् ॥२२॥
22. tasya me kṛcchrabhūtasya kṛcchrādasmādvimokṣaya ,
anyeṣāmagatirhyatra kumbhayonimṛte dvijam.
22. tasya me kṛcchrabhūtasya kṛcchrāt asmāt vimokṣaya
anyeṣām agatiḥ hi atra kumbhayonim ṛte dvijam
22. dvijam me tasya kṛcchrabhūtasya asmāt kṛcchrāt
vimokṣaya hi atra anyeṣām kumbhayonim ṛte agatiḥ asti
22. Release me from this great difficulty, as I am in a state of dire distress. Indeed, there is no other recourse here for others except the sage Agastya (kumbhayoni), O brahmin (dvija).
इदमाभरणं सौम्य तारणार्थं द्विजोत्तम ।
प्रतिगृह्णीष्व ब्रह्मर्षे प्रसादं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥२३॥
23. idamābharaṇaṃ saumya tāraṇārthaṃ dvijottama ,
pratigṛhṇīṣva brahmarṣe prasādaṃ kartumarhasi.
23. idam ābharaṇam saumya tāraṇārtham dvijottama
pratigṛhṇīṣva brahmarṣe prasādam kartum arhasi
23. saumya dvijottama idam ābharaṇam tāraṇārtham
pratigṛhṇīṣva brahmarṣe prasādam kartum arhasi
23. O gentle one, O best of brahmins (dvijottama), please accept this ornament for my deliverance. O sage (brahmarṣi), you ought to show your grace.
तस्याहं स्वर्गिणो वाक्यं श्रुत्वा दुःखसमन्वितम् ।
तारणायोपजग्राह तदाभरणमुत्तमम् ॥२४॥
24. tasyāhaṃ svargiṇo vākyaṃ śrutvā duḥkhasamanvitam ,
tāraṇāyopajagrāha tadābharaṇamuttamam.
24. tasya aham svargiṇaḥ vākyam śrutvā duḥkhasamanvitam
tāraṇāya upajagrāha tat ābharaṇam uttamam
24. aham tasya svargiṇaḥ duḥkhasamanvitam vākyam
śrutvā tāraṇāya tat uttamam ābharaṇam upajagrāha
24. Having heard the sorrowful plea (vākya) of that celestial being (svargin), I then accepted that excellent ornament for his deliverance.
मया प्रतिगृहीते तु तस्मिन्नाभरणे शुभे ।
मानुषः पूर्वको देहो राजर्षेः स ननाश ह ॥२५॥
25. mayā pratigṛhīte tu tasminnābharaṇe śubhe ,
mānuṣaḥ pūrvako deho rājarṣeḥ sa nanāśa ha.
25. mayā pratigṛhīte tu tasmin ābharaṇe śubhe
mānuṣaḥ pūrvakaḥ dehaḥ rājarṣeḥ saḥ nanāśa ha
25. tu mayā tasmin śubhe ābharaṇe pratigṛhīte
rājarṣeḥ saḥ pūrvakaḥ mānuṣaḥ dehaḥ nanāśa ha
25. But when that auspicious ornament was accepted by me, then that former human body of the royal sage was indeed destroyed.
प्रनष्टे तु शरीरे ऽसौ राजर्षिः परया मुदा ।
तृप्तः प्रमुदितो राजा जगाम त्रिदिवं पुनः ॥२६॥
26. pranaṣṭe tu śarīre'sau rājarṣiḥ parayā mudā ,
tṛptaḥ pramudito rājā jagāma tridivaṃ punaḥ.
26. pranaṣṭe tu śarīre asau rājarṣiḥ parayā mudā
tṛptaḥ pramuditaḥ rājā jagāma tridivaṃ punaḥ
26. When that body perished, this royal sage, the king, greatly satisfied and supremely delighted, went again to heaven.
तेनेदं शक्रतुल्येन दिव्यमाभरणं मम ।
तस्मिन्निमित्ते काकुत्स्थ दत्तमद्भुतदर्शनम् ॥२७॥
27. tenedaṃ śakratulyena divyamābharaṇaṃ mama ,
tasminnimitte kākutstha dattamadbhutadarśanam.
27. tena idaṃ śakratulyena divyaṃ ābharaṇaṃ mama
tasmin nimitte kākutstha dattaṃ adbhutadarśanam
27. O Kakutstha, this divine ornament of wondrous appearance is mine, given by him, who was equal to Indra, on that occasion.
