राक्षसं मृगरूपेण चरन्तं कामरूपिणम् ।
निहत्य रामो मारीचं तूर्णं पथि न्यवर्तत ॥१॥

1. After killing Maricha, the demon capable of assuming any form at will, who was moving about in the guise of a deer, Rama quickly returned on his path.
तस्य संत्वरमाणस्य द्रष्टुकामस्य मैथिलीम् ।
क्रूरस्वरो ऽथ गोमायुर्विननादास्य पृष्ठतः ॥२॥
2. tasya saṃtvaramāṇasya draṣṭukāmasya maithilīm ,
krūrasvaro'tha gomāyurvinanādāsya pṛṣṭhataḥ.

2. As he was hurrying, eager to see Maithili (Sita), then a jackal with a harsh cry howled from behind him.
स तस्य स्वरमाज्ञाय दारुणं रोमहर्षणम् ।
चिन्तयामास गोमायोः स्वरेण परिशङ्कितः ॥३॥
3. sa tasya svaramājñāya dāruṇaṃ romaharṣaṇam ,
cintayāmāsa gomāyoḥ svareṇa pariśaṅkitaḥ.

3. Recognizing that terrible, hair-raising cry, he became apprehensive because of the jackal's sound and began to ponder.
अशुभं बत मन्ये ऽहं गोमायुर्वाश्यते यथा ।
स्वस्ति स्यादपि वैदेह्या राक्षसैर्भक्षणं विना ॥४॥
4. aśubhaṃ bata manye'haṃ gomāyurvāśyate yathā ,
svasti syādapi vaidehyā rākṣasairbhakṣaṇaṃ vinā.
4. aśubham bata manye aham gomāyuḥ vāśyate yathā
svasti syāt api vaidehyāḥ rākṣasaiḥ bhakṣaṇam vinā
4. aham bata manye aśubham yathā gomāyuḥ vāśyate.
api rākṣasaiḥ bhakṣaṇam vinā vaidehyāḥ svasti syāt
4. "Alas, I consider this inauspicious, seeing how the jackal howls. May Vaidehi (Sita) be safe and not devoured by demons."
मारीचेन तु विज्ञाय स्वरमालक्ष्य मामकम् ।
विक्रुष्टं मृगरूपेण लक्ष्मणः शृणुयाद् यदि ॥५॥
5. mārīcena tu vijñāya svaramālakṣya māmakam ,
vikruṣṭaṃ mṛgarūpeṇa lakṣmaṇaḥ śṛṇuyād yadi.

vikruṣṭam mṛgarūpeṇa lakṣmaṇaḥ śṛṇuyāt yadi

5. If Lakshmana should hear the cry, uttered by Maricha in the form of a deer, a cry that Maricha will make having recognized and imitated my voice.
स सौमित्रिः स्वरं श्रुत्वा तां च हित्वाथ मैथिलीम् ।
तयैव प्रहितः क्षिप्रं मत्सकाशमिहैष्यति ॥६॥
6. sa saumitriḥ svaraṃ śrutvā tāṃ ca hitvātha maithilīm ,
tayaiva prahitaḥ kṣipraṃ matsakāśamihaiṣyati.
6. saḥ saumitriḥ svaram śrutvā tām ca hitvā atha maithilīm
tayā eva prahitaḥ kṣipram mat sakāśam iha eṣyati
6. saḥ saumitriḥ svaram śrutvā atha tām maithilīm ca
hitvā tayā eva prahitaḥ kṣipram iha mat sakāśam eṣyati
6. That Lakshmana (Soumitri), having heard the cry, and having abandoned Sita (Maithili), will then quickly come here to my presence, having been sent forth by her very self.
राक्षसैः सहितैर्नूनं सीताया ईप्सितो वधः ।
काञ्चनश्च मृगो भूत्वा व्यपनीयाश्रमात्तु माम् ॥७॥
7. rākṣasaiḥ sahitairnūnaṃ sītāyā īpsito vadhaḥ ,
kāñcanaśca mṛgo bhūtvā vyapanīyāśramāttu mām.
7. rākṣasaiḥ sahitaiḥ nūnam sītāyāḥ īpsitaḥ vadhaḥ
kāñcanaḥ ca mṛgaḥ bhūtvā vyapanīya āśramāt tu mām
7. nūnam sahitaiḥ rākṣasaiḥ sītāyāḥ vadhaḥ īpsitaḥ
ca kāñcanaḥ mṛgaḥ bhūtvā tu mām āśramāt vyapanīya
7. Indeed, Sita's killing is desired by these assembled demons. And (Maricha), having become a golden deer, would certainly lead me away from the hermitage.
दूरं नीत्वा तु मारीचो राक्षसो ऽभूच्छराहतः ।
हा लक्ष्मण हतो ऽस्मीति यद्वाक्यं व्यजहार ह ॥८॥
8. dūraṃ nītvā tu mārīco rākṣaso'bhūccharāhataḥ ,
hā lakṣmaṇa hato'smīti yadvākyaṃ vyajahāra ha.
8. dūram nītvā tu mārīcaḥ rākṣasaḥ abhūt śara āhataḥ
hā lakṣmaṇa hataḥ asmi iti yat vākyam vyajahāra ha
8. mārīcaḥ rākṣasaḥ tu dūram nītvā śara āhataḥ abhūt
ha yat vākyam hā lakṣmaṇa hataḥ asmi iti vyajahāra
8. Indeed, after leading me far away, Maricha, the demon, would be struck by an arrow, and would then utter the words: 'Alas, Lakshmana, I am slain!'
अपि स्वस्ति भवेद्द्वाभ्यां रहिताभ्यां मया वने ।
जनस्थाननिमित्तं हि कृतवैरो ऽस्मि राक्षसैः ।
निमित्तानि च घोराणि दृश्यन्ते ऽद्य बहूनि च ॥९॥
9. api svasti bhaveddvābhyāṃ rahitābhyāṃ mayā vane ,
janasthānanimittaṃ hi kṛtavairo'smi rākṣasaiḥ ,
nimittāni ca ghorāṇi dṛśyante'dya bahūni ca.
9. api svasti bhavet dvābhyām rahitābhyām
mayā vane | janasthānanimittam hi
kṛtavairaḥ asmi rākṣasaiḥ | nimittāni
ca ghorāṇi dṛśyante adya bahūni ca
9. mayā vane rahitābhyām dvābhyām api
svasti bhavet hi janasthānanimittam
rākṣasaiḥ kṛtavairaḥ asmi adya ca
bahūni ghorāṇi nimittāni ca dṛśyante
9. I wonder if all is well with the two (Sītā and Lakṣmaṇa) whom I left behind in the forest. Indeed, because of the events in Janasthana, I have incurred the enmity of the Rākṣasas. Moreover, many dreadful omens are appearing today.
इत्येवं चिन्तयन् रामः श्रुत्वा गोमायुनिःस्वनम् ।
आत्मनश्चापनयनं मृगरूपेण रक्षसा ।
आजगाम जनस्थानं राघवः परिशङ्कितः ॥१०॥
10. ityevaṃ cintayan rāmaḥ śrutvā gomāyuniḥsvanam ,
ātmanaścāpanayanaṃ mṛgarūpeṇa rakṣasā ,
ājagāma janasthānaṃ rāghavaḥ pariśaṅkitaḥ.
10. iti evam cintayan rāmaḥ śrutvā
gomāyuniḥsvanam | ātmanaḥ ca apanayanam
mṛgarūpeṇa rakṣasā | ājagāma
janasthānam rāghavaḥ pariśaṅkitaḥ
10. iti evam cintayan rāmaḥ gomāyuniḥsvanam
śrutvā ca mṛgarūpeṇa rakṣasā
ātmanaḥ apanayanam (jñātvā)
pariśaṅkitaḥ rāghavaḥ janasthānam ājagāma
10. Thus reflecting, Rāma, having heard the jackal's howl, and realizing his own diversion by a Rākṣasa in the guise of a deer, the descendant of Raghu (Rāghava) arrived at Janasthana, filled with apprehension.
तं दीनमानसं दीनमासेदुर्मृगपक्षिणः ।
सव्यं कृत्वा महात्मानं घोरांश्च ससृजुः स्वरान् ॥११॥
11. taṃ dīnamānasaṃ dīnamāsedurmṛgapakṣiṇaḥ ,
savyaṃ kṛtvā mahātmānaṃ ghorāṃśca sasṛjuḥ svarān.
11. tam dīnamānasam dīnam āseduḥ mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ |
savyam kṛtvā mahātmānam ghorān ca sasṛjuḥ svarān
11. mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ tam dīnamānasam dīnam āseduḥ
mahātmānam savyam kṛtvā ca ghorān svarān sasṛjuḥ
11. Distressed deer and birds approached him, who was himself dejected in mind and distressed. Keeping that great soul (Rāma) to their left, they emitted dreadful cries.
तानि दृष्ट्वा निमित्तानि महाघोराणि राघवः ।
ततो लक्षणमायान्तं ददर्श विगतप्रभम् ॥१२॥
12. tāni dṛṣṭvā nimittāni mahāghorāṇi rāghavaḥ ,
tato lakṣaṇamāyāntaṃ dadarśa vigataprabham.
12. tāni dṛṣṭvā nimittāni mahāghorāṇi rāghavaḥ |
tataḥ lakṣaṇam āyāntam dadarśa vigataprabham
12. rāghavaḥ tāni mahāghorāṇi nimittāni dṛṣṭvā
tataḥ vigataprabham lakṣaṇam āyāntam dadarśa
12. Having seen those greatly dreadful omens, Rāghava then saw Lakṣmaṇa approaching, looking utterly dejected (devoid of luster).
ततो ऽविदूरे रामेण समीयाय स लक्ष्मणः ।
विषण्णः स विषण्णेन दुःखितो दुःखभागिना ॥१३॥
13. tato'vidūre rāmeṇa samīyāya sa lakṣmaṇaḥ ,
viṣaṇṇaḥ sa viṣaṇṇena duḥkhito duḥkhabhāginā.
13. tataḥ avidūre rāmeṇa samīyāya saḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ
viṣaṇṇaḥ saḥ viṣaṇṇena duḥkhitaḥ duḥkhabhāginā
13. tataḥ avidūre saḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ viṣaṇṇaḥ duḥkhitaḥ
saḥ viṣaṇṇena duḥkhabhāginā rāmeṇa samīyāya
13. Then, not far from there, Lakshmana, himself despondent and full of sorrow, met Rama, who was likewise despondent and afflicted with grief.
संजगर्हे ऽथ तं भ्राता जेष्ठो लक्ष्मणमागतम् ।
विहाय सीतां विजने वने राक्षससेविते ॥१४॥
14. saṃjagarhe'tha taṃ bhrātā jeṣṭho lakṣmaṇamāgatam ,
vihāya sītāṃ vijane vane rākṣasasevite.
14. sañjagarhe atha tam bhrātā jeṣṭhaḥ lakṣmaṇam
āgatam vihāya sītām vijane vane rākṣasasevite
14. atha jeṣṭhaḥ bhrātā tam āgatam lakṣmaṇam sītām
vijane rākṣasasevite vane vihāya sañjagarhe
14. Then, the elder brother (Rama) rebuked Lakshmana, who had returned, for having abandoned Sita in a desolate forest frequented by Rākṣasas.
गृहीत्वा च करं सव्यं लक्ष्मणं रघुनन्दनः ।
उवाच मधुरोदर्कमिदं परुषमार्तवत् ॥१५॥
15. gṛhītvā ca karaṃ savyaṃ lakṣmaṇaṃ raghunandanaḥ ,
uvāca madhurodarkamidaṃ paruṣamārtavat.
15. gṛhītvā ca karam savyam lakṣmaṇam raghunandanaḥ
uvāca madhurodarkam idam paruṣam ārtavat
15. ca raghunandanaḥ lakṣmaṇam savyam karam gṛhītvā
ārtavat paruṣam madhurodarkam idam uvāca
15. And grasping Lakshmana's left hand, Rama (the delight of the Raghu dynasty) spoke these harsh words, which were like those of a distressed person, yet destined to have a sweet outcome.
अहो लक्ष्मण गर्ह्यं ते कृतं यत्त्वं विहाय ताम् ।
सीतामिहागतः सौम्य कच्चित् स्वस्ति भवेदिति ॥१६॥
16. aho lakṣmaṇa garhyaṃ te kṛtaṃ yattvaṃ vihāya tām ,
sītāmihāgataḥ saumya kaccit svasti bhavediti.
16. aho lakṣmaṇa garhyam te kṛtam yat tvam vihāya tām
sītām iha āgataḥ saumya kaccit svasti bhavet iti
16. aho lakṣmaṇa saumya te garhyam kṛtam yat tvam tām
sītām vihāya iha āgataḥ iti kaccit svasti bhavet
16. "Oh Lakshmana, you have done something blameworthy (garhya)! For you, my gentle one, have come here abandoning Sita. I hope all is well (svasti)."
न मे ऽस्ति संशयो वीर सर्वथा जनकात्मजा ।
विनष्टा भक्षिता वाप राक्षसैर्वनचारिभिः ॥१७॥
17. na me'sti saṃśayo vīra sarvathā janakātmajā ,
vinaṣṭā bhakṣitā vāpa rākṣasairvanacāribhiḥ.
17. na me asti saṃśayaḥ vīra sarvathā janakātmajā
vinaṣṭā bhakṣitā vā api rākṣasaiḥ vanacāribhiḥ
17. vīra me saṃśayaḥ na asti janakātmajā sarvathā
vinaṣṭā vā api vanacāribhiḥ rākṣasaiḥ bhakṣitā
17. O hero, I have no doubt at all that Janaka's daughter, Sita, is either lost or has been devoured by the forest-dwelling demons.
अशुभान्येव भूयिष्ठं यथा प्रादुर्भवन्ति मे ।
अपि लक्ष्मण सीतायाः सामग्र्यं प्राप्नुयावहे ॥१८॥
18. aśubhānyeva bhūyiṣṭhaṃ yathā prādurbhavanti me ,
api lakṣmaṇa sītāyāḥ sāmagryaṃ prāpnuyāvahe.
18. aśubhāni eva bhūyiṣṭham yathā prādurbhavanti
me api lakṣmaṇa sītāyāḥ sāmagryam prāpnuyāvahe
18. lakṣmaṇa yathā bhūyiṣṭham aśubhāni eva me
prādurbhavanti api sītāyāḥ sāmagryam prāpnuyāvahe
18. O Lakshmana, as predominantly inauspicious signs are appearing to me, will we indeed be able to achieve Sita's well-being?
इदं हि रक्षोमृगसंनिकाशं प्रलोभ्य मां दूरमनुप्रयातम् ।
हतं कथं चिन्महता श्रमेण स राक्षसो ऽभून्म्रियमाण एव ॥१९॥
19. idaṃ hi rakṣomṛgasaṃnikāśaṃ pralobhya māṃ dūramanuprayātam ,
hataṃ kathaṃ cinmahatā śrameṇa sa rākṣaso'bhūnmriyamāṇa eva.
19. idam hi rakṣomṛgasaṃnikāśam
pralobhya mām dūram anuprayatām
hatam kathaṃ cit mahatā śrameṇa
saḥ rākṣasaḥ abhūt mriyamāṇaḥ eva
19. hi idam rakṣomṛgasaṃnikāśam mām
pralobhya dūram anuprayatām
mahatā śrameṇa kathaṃ cit hatam
saḥ mriyamāṇaḥ eva rākṣasaḥ abhūt
19. Indeed, this creature, which resembled a demon in the form of a deer, lured me far away. I somehow killed it with great effort, and as it was dying, it revealed itself to be that demon (Mārīca).
मनश्च मे दीनमिहाप्रहृष्टं चक्षुश्च सव्यं कुरुते विकारम् ।
असंशयं लक्ष्मण नास्ति सीता हृता मृता वा पथि वर्तते वा ॥२०॥
20. manaśca me dīnamihāprahṛṣṭaṃ cakṣuśca savyaṃ kurute vikāram ,
asaṃśayaṃ lakṣmaṇa nāsti sītā hṛtā mṛtā vā pathi vartate vā.
20. manaḥ ca me dīnam iha aprahṛṣṭam
cakṣuḥ ca savyam kurute vikāram
asaṃśayam lakṣmaṇa na asti
sītā hṛtā mṛtā vā pathi vartate vā
20. iha me manaḥ ca dīnam aprahṛṣṭam
savyam ca cakṣuḥ vikāram kurute
lakṣmaṇa asaṃśayam sītā na asti
hṛtā vā mṛtā vā pathi vartate vā
20. My mind is distressed and unhappy here, and my left eye shows an abnormal twitch. O Lakshmana, without a doubt, Sita is not here; she has either been abducted, is dead, or is on the path.
