प्रत्याश्वस्तो यदा राजा मोहात् प्रत्यागतः पुनः ।
अथाजुहाव तं सूतं रामवृत्तान्तकारणात् ॥१॥

1. When the king had recovered and returned from his state of delusion (moha), he then called the charioteer (sūta) to him concerning the matter of Rama.
वृद्धं परमसंतप्तं नवग्रहमिव द्विपम् ।
विनिःश्वसन्तं ध्यायन्तमस्वस्थमिव कुञ्जरम् ॥२॥
2. vṛddhaṃ paramasaṃtaptaṃ navagrahamiva dvipam ,
viniḥśvasantaṃ dhyāyantamasvasthamiva kuñjaram.

viniḥśvasantam dhyāyantam asvastham iva kuñjaram
2. (saḥ tam sūtam) vṛddham paramasaṃtaptam,
navagraham dvipam iva,
viniḥśvasantam,

asvastham kuñjaram iva (ajuhāva).
2. (He called) the charioteer, who was old and extremely distressed, like an elephant (dvipa) just captured; sighing deeply and brooding, like an unwell elephant (kuñjara).
राजा तु रजसा सूतं ध्वस्ताङ्गं समुपस्थितम् ।
अश्रुपूर्णमुखं दीनमुवाच परमार्तवत् ॥३॥
3. rājā tu rajasā sūtaṃ dhvastāṅgaṃ samupasthitam ,
aśrupūrṇamukhaṃ dīnamuvāca paramārtavat.

3. But the king spoke to the charioteer (sūta) - who had arrived, whose body was soiled with dust, whose face was full of tears, and who was utterly wretched - as if himself in extreme distress.
क्व नु वत्स्यति धर्मात्मा वृक्षमूलमुपाश्रितः ।
सो ऽत्यन्तसुखितः सूत किमशिष्यति राघवः ।
भूमिपालात्मजो भूमौ शेते कथमनाथवत् ॥४॥
4. kva nu vatsyati dharmātmā vṛkṣamūlamupāśritaḥ ,
so'tyantasukhitaḥ sūta kimaśiṣyati rāghavaḥ ,
bhūmipālātmajo bhūmau śete kathamanāthavat.

4. Where indeed will the virtuous one (dharmātman), who embodies natural law (dharma), dwell, having taken refuge at the foot of a tree? O charioteer, what will Rama, who has always known extreme comfort, eat? How will the king's son lie on the ground like an orphan?
यं यान्तमनुयान्ति स्म पदाति रथकुञ्जराः ।
स वत्स्यति कथं रामो विजनं वनमाश्रितः ॥५॥
5. yaṃ yāntamanuyānti sma padāti rathakuñjarāḥ ,
sa vatsyati kathaṃ rāmo vijanaṃ vanamāśritaḥ.

saḥ vatsyati katham rāmaḥ vijanam vanam āśritaḥ

5. How will Rama, whom foot soldiers, chariots, and elephants used to follow whenever he went, now dwell, having taken refuge in a solitary forest?
व्यालैर्मृगैराचरितं कृष्णसर्पनिषेवितम् ।
कथं कुमारौ वैदेह्या सार्धं वनमुपस्थितौ ॥६॥
6. vyālairmṛgairācaritaṃ kṛṣṇasarpaniṣevitam ,
kathaṃ kumārau vaidehyā sārdhaṃ vanamupasthitau.
6. vyālaiḥ mṛgaiḥ ācaritam kṛṣṇasarpaniṣevitam
katham kumārau vaidehyā sārdham vanam upasthitau

6. How will the two princes, along with Vaidehi (Sita), be present in the forest that is frequented by wild beasts and other animals, and inhabited by black serpents?
सुकुमार्या तपस्विन्या सुमन्त्र सह सीतया ।
राजपुत्रौ कथं पादैरवरुह्य रथाद्गतौ ॥७॥
7. sukumāryā tapasvinyā sumantra saha sītayā ,
rājaputrau kathaṃ pādairavaruhya rathādgatau.

7. O Sumantra, how did the two princes, along with the exquisitely delicate Sita (who is now like an ascetic), having descended from the chariot, proceed on foot?
सिद्धार्थः खलु सूत त्वं येन दृष्टौ ममात्मजौ ।
वनान्तं प्रविशन्तौ तावश्विनाविव मन्दरम् ॥८॥
8. siddhārthaḥ khalu sūta tvaṃ yena dṛṣṭau mamātmajau ,
vanāntaṃ praviśantau tāvaśvināviva mandaram.
8. siddhārthaḥ khalu sūta tvam yena dṛṣṭau mama ātmajau
vanāntam praviśantau tau aśvinau iva mandaram
8. sūta,
tvam khalu siddhārthaḥ yena mama ātmajau vanāntam praviśantau tau aśvinau iva mandaram dṛṣṭau
8. O charioteer (sūta), you are truly blessed, for you have seen my two sons entering the depths of the forest, just as the two Aśvins might enter Mount Mandara.
किमुवाच वचो रामः किमुवाच च लक्ष्मणः ।
सुमन्त्र वनमासाद्य किमुवाच च मैथिली ।
आसितं शयितं भुक्तं सूत रामस्य कीर्तय ॥९॥
9. kimuvāca vaco rāmaḥ kimuvāca ca lakṣmaṇaḥ ,
sumantra vanamāsādya kimuvāca ca maithilī ,
āsitaṃ śayitaṃ bhuktaṃ sūta rāmasya kīrtaya.
9. kim uvāca vacaḥ rāmaḥ kim uvāca ca
lakṣmaṇaḥ sumantra vanam āsādya
kim uvāca ca maithilī āsitam
śayitam bhuktam sūta rāmasya kīrtaya
9. sūta,
sumantra,
rāmaḥ kim vacaḥ uvāca? ca lakṣmaṇaḥ kim uvāca? ca vanam āsādya maithilī kim uvāca? rāmasya āsitam śayitam bhuktam kīrtaya
9. O Sumantra, what did Rāma say? What did Lakṣmaṇa say? And what did Maithilī (Sītā) say after reaching the forest? O charioteer, recount all of Rāma's actions – his sitting, sleeping, and eating.
इति सूतो नरेन्द्रेण चोदितः सज्जमानया ।
उवाच वाचा राजानं सबाष्पपरिरब्धया ॥१०॥
10. iti sūto narendreṇa coditaḥ sajjamānayā ,
uvāca vācā rājānaṃ sabāṣpaparirabdhayā.
10. iti sūtaḥ narendreṇa coditaḥ sajjamānayā
uvāca vācā rājānam sabāṣpaparirabdhayā
10. iti narendreṇa coditaḥ sūtaḥ sajjamānayā

10. Thus, the charioteer, urged by the king, spoke to the monarch with a voice that was faltering and choked with tears.
अब्रवीन्मां महाराज धर्ममेवानुपालयन् ।
अञ्जलिं राघवः कृत्वा शिरसाभिप्रणम्य च ॥११॥
11. abravīnmāṃ mahārāja dharmamevānupālayan ,
añjaliṃ rāghavaḥ kṛtvā śirasābhipraṇamya ca.
11. abravīt mām mahārāja dharmam eva anupālayan
añjalim rāghavaḥ kṛtvā śirasā abhipraṇamya ca
11. mahārāja,
rāghavaḥ dharmam eva anupālayan añjalim kṛtvā ca śirasā abhipraṇamya mām abravīt
11. O great king (mahārāja), Rāghava (Rāma), while upholding his duty (dharma), spoke to me after respectfully folding his hands and bowing his head.
सूत मद्वचनात्तस्य तातस्य विदितात्मनः ।
शिरसा वन्दनीयस्य वन्द्यौ पादौ महात्मनः ॥१२॥
12. sūta madvacanāttasya tātasya viditātmanaḥ ,
śirasā vandanīyasya vandyau pādau mahātmanaḥ.
12. sūta mad-vacanāt tasya tātasya vidita-ātmanaḥ
śirasā vandanīyasya vandyau pādau mahātmanaḥ
12. sūta mad-vacanāt tasya tātasya vidita-ātmanaḥ
vandanīyasya mahātmanaḥ śirasā vandyau pādau
12. O Sūta, on my behalf, convey to that father, whose true nature (ātman) is understood, my reverence for his venerable feet, which are worthy of being bowed to with the head, for he is a great soul.
सर्वमन्तःपुरं वाच्यं सूत मद्वचनात्त्वया ।
आरोग्यमविशेषेण यथार्हं चाभिवादनम् ॥१३॥
13. sarvamantaḥpuraṃ vācyaṃ sūta madvacanāttvayā ,
ārogyamaviśeṣeṇa yathārhaṃ cābhivādanam.
13. sarvam antaḥ-puram vācyam sūta mad-vacanāt
tvayā ārogyam aviśeṣeṇa yathārham ca abhivādanam
13. sūta tvayā mad-vacanāt sarvam antaḥ-puram vācyam
ārogyam aviśeṣeṇa ca abhivādanam yathārham
13. O Sūta, you are to convey my words to all the women of the inner apartments (antaḥpura). Inquire about everyone's well-being without distinction, and offer salutations to them as is appropriate for their status.
माता च मम कौसल्या कुशलं चाभिवादनम् ।
देवि देवस्य पादौ च देववत् परिपालय ॥१४॥
14. mātā ca mama kausalyā kuśalaṃ cābhivādanam ,
devi devasya pādau ca devavat paripālaya.
14. mātā ca mama kausalyā kuśalam ca abhivādanam
devi devasya pādau ca devavat paripālaya
14. ca mama kausalyā mātā kuśalam abhivādanam
ca devi devasya pādau devavat ca paripālaya
14. And convey well-being and my salutations to my mother, Kausalyā. O goddess (Kausalyā), protect the feet of the divine one (Bharata), treating him as you would a god.
भरतः कुशलं वाच्यो वाच्यो मद्वचनेन च ।
सर्वास्वेव यथान्यायं वृत्तिं वर्तस्व मातृषु ॥१५॥
15. bharataḥ kuśalaṃ vācyo vācyo madvacanena ca ,
sarvāsveva yathānyāyaṃ vṛttiṃ vartasva mātṛṣu.
15. bharataḥ kuśalam vācyaḥ vācyaḥ mad-vacanena ca
sarvāsu eva yathā-nyāyam vṛttim vartasva mātṛṣu
15. bharataḥ kuśalam ca mad-vacanena vācyaḥ vācyaḥ.
(tvam) sarvāsu eva mātṛṣu yathā-nyāyam vṛttim vartasva
15. And Bharata is to be conveyed my well-being, indeed, he is to be told by my words. (Tell him:) 'Towards all mothers, conduct yourself with proper behavior (dharma), as is right and just.'
वक्तव्यश्च महाबाहुरिक्ष्वाकुकुलनन्दनः ।
पितरं यौवराज्यस्थो राज्यस्थमनुपालय ॥१६॥
16. vaktavyaśca mahābāhurikṣvākukulanandanaḥ ,
pitaraṃ yauvarājyastho rājyasthamanupālaya.
16. vaktavyaḥ ca mahābāhuḥ ikṣvākukulanandanaḥ
pitaram yauvarājyasthaḥ rājyastham anupālaya
16. mahābāhuḥ ikṣvākukulanandanaḥ ca vaktavyaḥ (iti yat)
yauvarājyasthaḥ (tvam) rājyastham pitaram anupālaya
16. And the mighty-armed Rama, the delight of the Ikṣvāku lineage, should be told: 'Being established in the position of crown prince (yauvarājya), you must obey your father, who is established in the kingdom.'
इत्येवं मां महाराज ब्रुवन्नेव महायशाः ।
रामो राजीवताम्राक्षो भृशमश्रूण्यवर्तयत् ॥१७॥
17. ityevaṃ māṃ mahārāja bruvanneva mahāyaśāḥ ,
rāmo rājīvatāmrākṣo bhṛśamaśrūṇyavartayat.
17. iti evam mām mahārāja bruvan eva mahāyaśāḥ
rāmaḥ rājīvatāmrākṣaḥ bhṛśam aśrūṇi avartayat
17. mahārāja,
iti evam mām bruvan eva,
mahāyaśāḥ rājīvatāmrākṣaḥ rāmaḥ bhṛśam aśrūṇi avartayat
17. Thus, O great king, even while speaking to me, the very famous Rama, whose eyes were red like lotuses, shed many tears.
लक्ष्मणस्तु सुसंक्रुद्धो निःश्वसन् वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
केनायमपराधेन राजपुत्रो विवासितः ॥१८॥
18. lakṣmaṇastu susaṃkruddho niḥśvasan vākyamabravīt ,
kenāyamaparādhena rājaputro vivāsitaḥ.
18. lakṣmaṇaḥ tu susaṃkruddhaḥ niḥśvasan vākyam
abravīt kena ayam aparādhena rājaputraḥ vivāsitaḥ
18. lakṣmaṇaḥ tu susaṃkruddhaḥ (san) niḥśvasan vākyam abravīt.
(saḥ papraccha) ayam rājaputraḥ kena aparādhena vivāsitaḥ?
18. But Lakshmana, exceedingly enraged, sighed and spoke these words: 'By what fault has this prince (Rama) been exiled?'
यदि प्रव्राजितो रामो लोभकारणकारितम् ।
वरदाननिमित्तं वा सर्वथा दुष्कृतं कृतम् ।
रामस्य तु परित्यागे न हेतुमुपलक्षये ॥१९॥
19. yadi pravrājito rāmo lobhakāraṇakāritam ,
varadānanimittaṃ vā sarvathā duṣkṛtaṃ kṛtam ,
rāmasya tu parityāge na hetumupalakṣaye.
19. yadi pravrājitaḥ rāmaḥ
lobhakāraṇakāritam varadānanimittam vā
sarvathā duṣkṛtam kṛtam rāmasya
tu parityāge na hetum upalakṣaye
19. yadi rāmaḥ pravrājitaḥ (asti),
(tat) lobhakāraṇakāritam vā varadānanimittam (kṛtam),
(tat) sarvathā duṣkṛtam kṛtam.
tu,
rāmasya parityāge hetum na upalakṣaye.
19. If Rama has been exiled, whether caused by greed or on account of a boon, it is in every way an evil deed that has been done. But regarding Rama's abandonment, I do not perceive any (valid) reason.
असमीक्ष्य समारब्धं विरुद्धं बुद्धिलाघवात् ।
जनयिष्यति संक्रोशं राघवस्य विवासनम् ॥२०॥
20. asamīkṣya samārabdhaṃ viruddhaṃ buddhilāghavāt ,
janayiṣyati saṃkrośaṃ rāghavasya vivāsanam.
20. asamīkṣya samārabhdam viruddham buddhilāghavāt
janayiṣyati saṃkrośam rāghavasya vivāsanam
20. viruddham asamīkṣya samārabhdam buddhilāghavāt
rāghavasya vivāsanam saṃkrośam janayiṣyati
20. This wrongful act, undertaken without proper consideration due to a lack of wisdom, will surely provoke an outcry concerning Rāghava's banishment.
अहं तावन्महाराजे पितृत्वं नोपलक्षये ।
भ्राता भर्ता च बन्धुश्च पिता च मम राघवः ॥२१॥
21. ahaṃ tāvanmahārāje pitṛtvaṃ nopalakṣaye ,
bhrātā bhartā ca bandhuśca pitā ca mama rāghavaḥ.
21. aham tāvat mahārāje pitṛtvam na upalakṣaye bhrātā
bhartā ca bandhuḥ ca pitā ca mama rāghavaḥ
21. aham tāvat mahārāje pitṛtvam na upalakṣaye mama
rāghavaḥ bhrātā bhartā ca bandhuḥ ca pitā ca
21. For my part, I do not recognize the quality of fatherhood in the great king. Rāghava (Rāma) is my brother, husband, kinsman, and even my father.
सर्वलोकप्रियं त्यक्त्वा सर्वलोकहिते रतम् ।
सर्वलोको ऽनुरज्येत कथं त्वानेन कर्मणा ॥२२॥
22. sarvalokapriyaṃ tyaktvā sarvalokahite ratam ,
sarvaloko'nurajyeta kathaṃ tvānena karmaṇā.
22. sarvalokapriyam tyaktvā sarvalokahite ratam
sarvalokaḥ anurajyeta katham tvā anena karmaṇā
22. sarvalokapriyam sarvalokahite ratam tyaktvā
katham sarvalokaḥ anena karmaṇā tvā anurajyeta
22. Having banished one who is beloved by all people and dedicated to their welfare, how could all the world ever be pleased with you because of this action (karma)?
जानकी तु महाराज निःश्वसन्ती तपस्विनी ।
भूतोपहतचित्तेव विष्ठिता वृष्मृता स्थिता ॥२३॥
23. jānakī tu mahārāja niḥśvasantī tapasvinī ,
bhūtopahatacitteva viṣṭhitā vṛṣmṛtā sthitā.
23. jānakī tu mahārāja niḥśvasantī tapasvinī
bhūtopahatacittā iva viṣṭhitā vṛṣmṛtā sthitā
23. tu mahārāja jānakī niḥśvasantī tapasvinī
bhūtopahatacittā iva vṛṣmṛtā viṣṭhitā sthitā
23. But, O great king, Jānakī, sighing and pitiable, stood there as if her mind were afflicted by a spirit, appearing stunned and motionless.
अदृष्टपूर्वव्यसना राजपुत्री यशस्विनी ।
तेन दुःखेन रुदती नैव मां किं चिदब्रवीत् ॥२४॥
24. adṛṣṭapūrvavyasanā rājaputrī yaśasvinī ,
tena duḥkhena rudatī naiva māṃ kiṃ cidabravīt.
24. adṛṣṭapūrvavyasanā rājaputrī yaśasvinī tena
duḥkhena rudatī na eva mām kim cit abravīt
24. adṛṣṭapūrvavyasanā yaśasvinī rājaputrī tena
duḥkhena rudatī mām kim cit na eva abravīt
24. The renowned princess, who had never before experienced such distress, weeping from that sorrow, did not speak anything to me.
उद्वीक्षमाणा भर्तारं मुखेन परिशुष्यता ।
मुमोच सहसा बाष्पं मां प्रयान्तमुदीक्ष्य सा ॥२५॥
25. udvīkṣamāṇā bhartāraṃ mukhena pariśuṣyatā ,
mumoca sahasā bāṣpaṃ māṃ prayāntamudīkṣya sā.
25. udvīkṣamāṇā bhartāram mukhena pariśuṣyatā
mumoca sahasā bāṣpam mām prayāntam udīkṣya sā
25. sā udvīkṣamāṇā bhartāram mukhena pariśuṣyatā
mām prayāntam udīkṣya sahasā bāṣpam mumoca
25. Gazing up at her husband with a withered face, she, suddenly seeing me departing, shed tears.
तथैव रामो ऽश्रुमुखः कृताञ्जलिः स्थितो ऽभवल् लक्ष्मणबाहुपालितः ।
तथैव सीता रुदती तपस्विनी निरीक्षते राजरथं तथैव माम् ॥२६॥
26. tathaiva rāmo'śrumukhaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ sthito'bhaval lakṣmaṇabāhupālitaḥ ,
tathaiva sītā rudatī tapasvinī nirīkṣate rājarathaṃ tathaiva mām.
26. tathā eva rāmaḥ aśrumukhaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ
sthitaḥ abhavat lakṣmaṇabāhupālitaḥ
tathā eva sītā rudatī tapasvinī
nirīkṣate rājaratham tathā eva mām
26. tathā eva rāmaḥ aśrumukhaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ
lakṣmaṇabāhupālitaḥ sthitaḥ abhavat
tathā eva rudatī tapasvinī sītā
rājaratham nirīkṣate tathā eva mām
26. Similarly, Rama, with a tear-stained face and joined palms, stood protected by Lakshmana's arm. And similarly, Sita, weeping and appearing pitiable, gazed at the royal chariot and similarly at me.
