ततः प्रभाते विमले कृतकर्मा नराधिपः ।
विश्वामित्रं महात्मानमाजुहाव सराघवम् ॥१॥
1. tataḥ prabhāte vimale kṛtakarmā narādhipaḥ ,

1. Then, in the clear morning, the king, having performed his duties, summoned the great-souled Viśvāmitra along with Rāma.
तमर्चयित्वा धर्मात्मा शास्त्रदृष्ट्तेन कर्मणा ।
राघवौ च महात्मानौ तदा वाक्यमुवाच ह ॥२॥
2. tamarcayitvā dharmātmā śāstradṛṣṭtena karmaṇā ,
rāghavau ca mahātmānau tadā vākyamuvāca ha.

2. Having worshipped him (Viśvāmitra) with actions prescribed by the scriptures, that king, whose soul was aligned with natural law (dharma), then spoke these words to the two great-souled Rāghavas (Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa).
भगवन् स्वागतं ते ऽस्तु किं करोमि तवानघ ।
भवानाज्ञापयतु मामाज्ञाप्यो भवता ह्यहम् ॥३॥
3. bhagavan svāgataṃ te'stu kiṃ karomi tavānagha ,
bhavānājñāpayatu māmājñāpyo bhavatā hyaham.

bhavān ājñāpayatu mām ājñāpyaḥ bhavatā hi aham

3. O revered one (bhagavan), welcome to you! What may I do for you, O sinless one? Please command me; indeed, I am to be commanded by you.
एवमुक्तः स धर्मात्मा जनकेन महात्मना ।
प्रत्युवाच मुनिर्वीरं वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदः ॥४॥
4. evamuktaḥ sa dharmātmā janakena mahātmanā ,
pratyuvāca munirvīraṃ vākyaṃ vākyaviśāradaḥ.

4. Thus addressed by the great-souled Janaka, that sage (muni), whose soul was aligned with natural law (dharma) and who was skilled in speech, replied to the hero (Janaka) with words.
पुत्रौ दशरथस्येमौ क्षत्रियौ लोकविश्रुतौ ।
द्रष्टुकामौ धनुः श्रेष्ठं यदेतत्त्वयि तिष्ठति ॥५॥
5. putrau daśarathasyemau kṣatriyau lokaviśrutau ,
draṣṭukāmau dhanuḥ śreṣṭhaṃ yadetattvayi tiṣṭhati.

5. These two sons of Dasharatha, who are famous warriors (kṣatriya), desire to see that excellent bow which is currently with you.
एतद्दर्शय भद्रं ते कृतकामौ नृपात्मजौ ।
दर्शनादस्य धनुषो यथेष्टं प्रतियास्यतः ॥६॥
6. etaddarśaya bhadraṃ te kṛtakāmau nṛpātmajau ,
darśanādasya dhanuṣo yatheṣṭaṃ pratiyāsyataḥ.
6. etat darśaya bhadram te kṛtakāmau nṛpātmajau
darśanāt asya dhanuṣaḥ yatheṣṭam pratiyāsyataḥ
6. etat darśaya te bhadram asya dhanuṣaḥ darśanāt
kṛtakāmau nṛpātmajau yatheṣṭam pratiyāsyataḥ
6. Please show this (bow); may you be blessed with well-being. Having had their wish fulfilled by seeing this bow, the two princes will return as they desire.
एवमुक्तस्तु जनकः प्रत्युवाच महामुनिम् ।
श्रूयतामस्य धनुषो यदर्थमिह तिष्ठति ॥७॥
7. evamuktastu janakaḥ pratyuvāca mahāmunim ,
śrūyatāmasya dhanuṣo yadarthamiha tiṣṭhati.

śrūyatām asya dhanuṣaḥ yat artham iha tiṣṭhati

7. Thus addressed, Janaka replied to the great sage, 'Please listen to the reason for which this bow remains here.'
देवरात इति ख्यातो निमेः षष्ठो महीपतिः ।
न्यासो ऽयं तस्य भगवन् हस्ते दत्तो महात्मना ॥८॥
8. devarāta iti khyāto nimeḥ ṣaṣṭho mahīpatiḥ ,
nyāso'yaṃ tasya bhagavan haste datto mahātmanā.

nyāsaḥ ayam tasya bhagavan haste dattaḥ mahātmanā
8. bhagavan nimeḥ ṣaṣṭhaḥ devarāta iti khyātaḥ
mahīpatiḥ ayam nyāsaḥ tasya haste mahātmanā dattaḥ
8. Deva-rāta by name, the sixth king in Nimi's lineage, was famous. This deposit (nyāsa) was placed in his hand by the great-souled one, O revered sir.
दक्षयज्ञवधे पूर्वं धनुरायम्य वीर्यवान् ।
रुद्रस्तु त्रिदशान् रोषात् सलीलमिदमब्रवीत् ॥९॥
9. dakṣayajñavadhe pūrvaṃ dhanurāyamya vīryavān ,
rudrastu tridaśān roṣāt salīlamidamabravīt.

rudraḥ tu tridaśān roṣāt salīlam idam abravīt
9. pūrvam dakṣayajñavadhe vīryavān rudraḥ tu dhanuḥ

9. Earlier, during the destruction of Daksha's Vedic ritual (yajña), the mighty Rudra, having drawn his bow, angrily and effortlessly spoke this to the gods.
यस्माद्भागार्थिनो भागान्नाकल्पयत मे सुराः ।
वराङ्गानि महार्हाणि धनुषा शातयामि वः ॥१०॥
10. yasmādbhāgārthino bhāgānnākalpayata me surāḥ ,
varāṅgāni mahārhāṇi dhanuṣā śātayāmi vaḥ.
10. yasmāt bhāgārthinaḥ bhāgān na akalpayata me
surāḥ varāṅgāni mahārhāṇi dhanuṣā śātayāmi vaḥ
10. surāḥ yasmāt bhāgārthinaḥ me bhāgān na akalpayata
dhanuṣā vaḥ mahārhāṇi varāṅgāni śātayāmi
10. Since you gods did not allot shares to me, who was a claimant for a share, I shall sever your most excellent and valuable limbs with this bow.
ततो विमनसः सर्वे देवा वै मुनिपुंगव ।
प्रसादयन्ति देवेशं तेषां प्रीतो ऽभवद्भवः ॥११॥
11. tato vimanasaḥ sarve devā vai munipuṃgava ,
prasādayanti deveśaṃ teṣāṃ prīto'bhavadbhavaḥ.
11. tataḥ vimanasaḥ sarve devāḥ vai munipuṅgava
prasādayanti deveśam teṣām prītaḥ abhavat bhavaḥ
11. munipuṅgava tataḥ sarve devāḥ vai vimanasaḥ

11. Then, O chief among sages, all the gods became disheartened. They began to propitiate the lord of gods, and (thereupon) Bhava became pleased with them.
प्रीतियुक्तः स सर्वेषां
ददौ तेषां महात्मनाम् ॥१२॥
12. prītiyuktaḥ sa sarveṣāṃ
dadau teṣāṃ mahātmanām.

12. Being pleased, he gave (boons or forgiveness) to all those great-souled ones.
तदेतद्देवदेवस्य धनूरत्नं महात्मनः ।
न्यासभूतं तदा न्यस्तमस्माकं पूर्वके विभो ॥१३॥
13. tadetaddevadevasya dhanūratnaṃ mahātmanaḥ ,
nyāsabhūtaṃ tadā nyastamasmākaṃ pūrvake vibho.
13. tad etat devadevasya dhanūratnam mahātmanaḥ
nyāsabhūtam tadā nyastam asmākam pūrvake vibho
13. vibho devadevasya mahātmanaḥ tat etat dhanūratnam
tadā nyāsabhūtam asmākam pūrvake nyastam
13. O lord, this jewel among bows, belonging to the great-souled god of gods [Shiva], was then entrusted to our ancestors as a sacred deposit.
अथ मे कृषतः क्षेत्रं लाङ्गलादुत्थिता मम ।
क्षेत्रं शोधयता लब्ध्वा नाम्ना सीतेति विश्रुता ॥१४॥
14. atha me kṛṣataḥ kṣetraṃ lāṅgalādutthitā mama ,
kṣetraṃ śodhayatā labdhvā nāmnā sīteti viśrutā.
14. atha me kṛṣataḥ kṣetram lāṅgalāt utthitā mama
kṣetram śodhayatā labdhvā nāmnā sītā iti viśrutā
14. atha me kṣetram kṛṣataḥ mama utthitā lāṅgalāt
kṣetram śodhayatā labdhvā nāmnā sītā iti viśrutā
14. Then, as I was ploughing the field, my daughter emerged from the plough. Having been found while clearing the field, she became renowned by the name Sītā.
भूतलादुत्थिता सा तु व्यवर्धत ममात्मजा ।
वीर्यशुल्केति मे कन्या स्थापितेयमयोनिजा ॥१५॥
15. bhūtalādutthitā sā tu vyavardhata mamātmajā ,
vīryaśulketi me kanyā sthāpiteyamayonijā.
15. bhūtalāt utthitā sā tu vyavardhata mama ātmajā
vīryaśulkā iti me kanyā sthāpitā iyam ayonijā
15. sā mama ātmajā bhūtalāt utthitā tu vyavardhata
iyam ayonijā kanyā me vīryaśulkā iti sthāpitā
15. Indeed, that daughter of mine, born from the earth's surface, grew up. This maiden, not born from a womb, was then designated by me to have valor as her bride-price.
भूतलादुत्थितां तां तु वर्धमानां ममात्मजाम् ।
वरयामासुरागम्य राजानो मुनिपुंगव ॥१६॥
16. bhūtalādutthitāṃ tāṃ tu vardhamānāṃ mamātmajām ,
varayāmāsurāgamya rājāno munipuṃgava.
16. bhūtalāt utthitām tām tu vardhamānām mama
ātmajām varayāmāsuḥ āgamya rājānaḥ munipuṅgava
16. munipuṅgava rājānaḥ āgamya bhūtalāt utthitām
tām vardhamānām mama ātmajām tu varayāmāsuḥ
16. O best among ascetics, kings approached and sought in marriage that daughter of mine, who had emerged from the earth's surface and was growing up.
तेषां वरयतां कन्यां सर्वेषां पृथिवीक्षिताम् ।
वीर्यशुल्केति भगवन्न ददामि सुतामहम् ॥१७॥
17. teṣāṃ varayatāṃ kanyāṃ sarveṣāṃ pṛthivīkṣitām ,
vīryaśulketi bhagavanna dadāmi sutāmaham.
17. teṣām varayatām kanyām sarveṣām pṛthivīkṣitām
vīryaśulkā iti bhagavan na dadāmi sutām aham
17. bhagavan aham teṣām sarveṣām pṛthivīkṣitām
varayatām kanyām vīryaśulkā iti sutām na dadāmi
17. O Venerable One, I do not give my daughter to any of those kings, all of them who seek her hand in marriage, for I have declared that her bride-price is valor.
ततः सर्वे नृपतयः समेत्य मुनिपुंगव ।
मिथिलामभ्युपागम्य वीर्यं जिज्ञासवस्तदा ॥१८॥
18. tataḥ sarve nṛpatayaḥ sametya munipuṃgava ,
mithilāmabhyupāgamya vīryaṃ jijñāsavastadā.
18. tataḥ sarve nṛpatayaḥ sametya munipuṅgava
mithilām abhyupāgamya vīryam jijñāsavaḥ tadā
18. tataḥ tadā munipuṅgava sarve nṛpatayaḥ sametya
mithilām abhyupāgamya vīryam jijñāsavaḥ
18. Then, O best of sages, all those kings, having assembled and approached Mithila, were eager to test their valor.
तेषां जिज्ञासमानानां वीर्यं धनुरुपाहृतम् ।
न शेकुर्ग्रहणे तस्य धनुषस्तोलने ऽपि वा ॥१९॥
19. teṣāṃ jijñāsamānānāṃ vīryaṃ dhanurupāhṛtam ,
na śekurgrahaṇe tasya dhanuṣastolane'pi vā.
19. teṣām jijñāsamānānām vīryam dhanuḥ upāhṛtam
na śekuḥ grahaṇe tasya dhanuṣaḥ tolane api vā
19. vīryam jijñāsamānānām teṣām dhanuḥ upāhṛtam.
te tasya dhanuṣaḥ grahaṇe vā tolane api na śekuḥ
19. For those kings who were eager to test their valor, the bow was brought forward. But they were unable to even grasp or lift that bow.
तेषां वीर्यवतां वीर्यमल्पं ज्ञात्वा महामुने ।
प्रत्याख्याता नृपतयस्तन्निबोध तपोधन ॥२०॥
20. teṣāṃ vīryavatāṃ vīryamalpaṃ jñātvā mahāmune ,
pratyākhyātā nṛpatayastannibodha tapodhana.
20. teṣām vīryavatām vīryam alpam jñātvā mahāmune
pratyākhyātāḥ nṛpatayaḥ tat nibodha tapodhana
20. mahāmune tapodhana teṣām vīryavatām alpam vīryam jñātvā nṛpatayaḥ pratyākhyātāḥ.
tat nibodha.
20. O great sage (mahāmune), having realized the meager strength of those supposedly valiant kings, they were rejected. Now, O treasure of asceticism (tapodhana), please learn this.
ततः परमकोपेन राजानो मुनिपुंगव ।
अरुन्धन्मिथिलां सर्वे वीर्यसंदेहमागताः ॥२१॥
21. tataḥ paramakopena rājāno munipuṃgava ,
arundhanmithilāṃ sarve vīryasaṃdehamāgatāḥ.
21. tataḥ paramakopena rājānaḥ munipuṅgava
arundhan mithilām sarve vīryasandeham āgatāḥ
21. Then, O chief among sages, all the kings, having become doubtful of their own valor, besieged Mithila with extreme anger.
आत्मानमवधूतं ते विज्ञाय मुनिपुंगव ।
रोषेण महताविष्टाः पीडयन्मिथिलां पुरीम् ॥२२॥
22. ātmānamavadhūtaṃ te vijñāya munipuṃgava ,
roṣeṇa mahatāviṣṭāḥ pīḍayanmithilāṃ purīm.
22. ātmānam avadhūtam te vijñāya munipuṅgava
roṣeṇa mahatā āviṣṭāḥ pīḍayan mithilām purīm
22. O chief among sages, realizing their own selves (ātman) to have been insulted, they, overwhelmed by great anger, tormented the city of Mithila.
ततः संवत्सरे पूर्णे क्षयं यातानि सर्वशः ।
साधनानि मुनिरेष्ठ ततो ऽहं भृशदुःखितः ॥२३॥
23. tataḥ saṃvatsare pūrṇe kṣayaṃ yātāni sarvaśaḥ ,
sādhanāni munireṣṭha tato'haṃ bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ.
23. tataḥ saṃvatsare pūrṇe kṣayam yātāni sarvaśaḥ
sādhanāni munireṣṭha tataḥ aham bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ
23. Then, O best of sages, after a full year, all provisions were completely depleted. Therefore, I was greatly distressed.
ततो देवगणान् सर्वांस्तपसाहं प्रसादयम् ।
ददुश्च परमप्रीताश्चतुरङ्गबलं सुराः ॥२४॥
24. tato devagaṇān sarvāṃstapasāhaṃ prasādayam ,
daduśca paramaprītāścaturaṅgabalaṃ surāḥ.
24. tataḥ devagaṇān sarvān tapasā aham prasādayam
daduḥ ca paramaprītāḥ caturaṅgabalam surāḥ
24. Then, through my austerity (tapas), I appeased all the hosts of gods. And the gods, being exceedingly pleased, gave me a four-limbed army.
ततो भग्ना नृपतयो हन्यमाना दिशो ययुः ।
अवीर्या वीर्यसंदिग्धा सामात्याः पापकारिणः ॥२५॥
25. tato bhagnā nṛpatayo hanyamānā diśo yayuḥ ,
avīryā vīryasaṃdigdhā sāmātyāḥ pāpakāriṇaḥ.
25. tataḥ bhagnāḥ nṛpatayaḥ hanyamānāḥ diśaḥ yayuḥ
avīryāḥ vīryasaṃdigdhāḥ sāmātyāḥ pāpakāriṇaḥ

avīryāḥ vīryasaṃdigdhāḥ sāmātyāḥ pāpakāriṇaḥ
25. Then, defeated, the kings, being struck down, fled in all directions. They were powerless, doubtful of their own strength, accompanied by their ministers, and engaged in sinful acts.
तदेतन्मुनिशार्दूल धनुः परमभास्वरम् ।
रामलक्ष्मणयोश्चापि दर्शयिष्यामि सुव्रत ॥२६॥
26. tadetanmuniśārdūla dhanuḥ paramabhāsvaram ,
rāmalakṣmaṇayoścāpi darśayiṣyāmi suvrata.
26. tat etat muniśārdūla dhanuḥ paramabhāsvaram
rāmalakṣmaṇayoḥ ca api darśayiṣyāmi suvrata
26. muniśārdūla suvrata tat etat paramabhāsvaram
dhanuḥ rāmalakṣmaṇayoḥ ca api darśayiṣyāmi
26. Therefore, O eminent sage (muniśārdūla), I will show this exceedingly brilliant bow to both Rama and Lakshmana, O one of noble vows (suvrata).
यद्यस्य धनुषो रामः कुर्यादारोपणं मुने ।
सुतामयोनिजां सीतां दद्यां दाशरथेरहम् ॥२७॥
27. yadyasya dhanuṣo rāmaḥ kuryādāropaṇaṃ mune ,
sutāmayonijāṃ sītāṃ dadyāṃ dāśaratheraham.
27. yadi asya dhanuṣaḥ rāmaḥ kuryāt āropaṇam mune
sutām ayonijām sītām dadyām dāśaratheḥ aham
27. mune yadi rāmaḥ asya dhanuṣaḥ āropaṇam kuryāt
aham ayonijām sutām sītām dāśaratheḥ dadyām
27. O sage (muni), if Rama strings this bow, I will give my daughter Sita, who is not born from a womb (ayonijā), to Dasharatha's son (Rāma).
