1.
Rāma, accompanied by Lakṣmaṇa, having made the decision to ascend Mount Suvela, spoke this to Sugrīva.

2.
And with a very smooth and excellent speech, he addressed Vibhīṣaṇa - that Rākṣasa who understands natural law (dharma), is devoted, knows strategy, and is familiar with procedures.

3.
(He said:) 'Indeed, let all of us properly ascend this Mount Suvela, the king of mountains, which is adorned with hundreds of minerals. We shall stay here this night.'

'And we shall survey Lankā, the dwelling of that Rākṣasa, by whom my wife was abducted - a deed which will lead to a fateful end for him - by that evil-minded one.'

5.
By whom the natural law (dharma), proper conduct, and family lineage were not understood, and by whom, with a base, demonic intellect, that reprehensible act was committed.

6.
My anger (roṣa) grows whenever that vilest of demons is mentioned, and because of the transgressions of that base individual, I shall witness the destruction of all the rākṣasas.

7.
Indeed, one person commits an evil deed, having fallen under the sway of the noose of destiny. By that base individual's self-inflicted wrong (ātmāpacāra), his entire family is destroyed.

8.
As he was thus deliberating, full of wrath towards Rāvaṇa, Rāma ascended the picturesque peak of Suvela to encamp.

Sugriva, accompanied by his ministers and Vibhishana, ascended after him. Hanuman, Angada, Nila, Mainda, and Dvivida also followed.

12.
These and many other swift-moving Vanaras, who were like mountain-dwellers swift as the wind, ascended that Suvela mountain by hundreds, to where Rama (rāghava) was.

In a short time, having ascended the mountain from all sides, they saw on its peak a city that appeared to be suspended in the sky.

The monkey chiefs saw that beautiful city of Laṅkā, which possessed magnificent gates, was adorned with splendid ramparts, and was entirely teeming with demons.

15.
And those foremost among the monkeys also saw another rampart, which had been constructed by the blue-skinned night-prowlers stationed upon its walls.

16.
Having seen the demons who were eager for battle, all those monkeys then let out mighty roars, right there in the presence of Rāma.

Then the sun set, dyed by the twilight. And the night, illuminated by the full moon, gradually came forth.

Then, that Rāma, the leader of the monkey army, accompanied by Lakṣmaṇa and surrounded by numerous groups of commanders, was respectfully welcomed and honored by Vibhīṣaṇa, and then comfortably resided on the peak of Suvela.
