स तु तेन तदा क्रोधात् काकुत्स्थेनार्दितो रणे ।
रावणः समरश्लाघी महाक्रोधमुपागमत् ॥१॥

1. But Ravana, boastful in battle, being tormented by Kakutstha (Rama) in that conflict, then became filled with great anger (mahākrodha) out of wrath.
स दीप्तनयनो रोषाच्चापमायम्य वीर्यवान् ।
अभ्यर्दयत् सुसंक्रुद्धो राघवं परमाहवे ॥२॥
2. sa dīptanayano roṣāccāpamāyamya vīryavān ,
abhyardayat susaṃkruddho rāghavaṃ paramāhave.

2. That mighty one, with blazing eyes and exceedingly enraged, drew his bow in wrath and then harassed Rama in the great battle.
बाणधारासहस्रैस्तु स तोयद इवाम्बरात् ।
राघवं रावणो बाणैस्तटाकमिव पूरयत् ॥३॥
3. bāṇadhārāsahasraistu sa toyada ivāmbarāt ,
rāghavaṃ rāvaṇo bāṇaistaṭākamiva pūrayat.

3. Like a rain cloud from the sky, Rāvaṇa deluged Rāghava with thousands of arrow-showers, just as one would fill a lake with arrows.
पूरितः शरजालेन धनुर्मुक्तेन संयुगे ।
महागिरिरिवाकम्प्यः काकुस्थो न प्रकम्पते ॥४॥
4. pūritaḥ śarajālena dhanurmuktena saṃyuge ,
mahāgiririvākampyaḥ kākustho na prakampate.

4. Although deluged by a volley of arrows released from bows in battle, Rāma (kākutstha), like an unshakable great mountain, did not waver.
स शरैः शरजालानि वारयन् समरे स्थितः ।
गभस्तीनिव सूर्यस्य प्रतिजग्राह वीर्यवान् ॥५॥
5. sa śaraiḥ śarajālāni vārayan samare sthitaḥ ,
gabhastīniva sūryasya pratijagrāha vīryavān.

5. That powerful Rāma, standing firm in battle and warding off the volleys of arrows with his own arrows, repelled them as if catching the sun's rays.
ततः शरसहस्राणि क्षिप्रहस्तो निशाचरः ।
निजघानोरसि क्रुद्धो राघवस्य महात्मनः ॥६॥
6. tataḥ śarasahasrāṇi kṣiprahasto niśācaraḥ ,
nijaghānorasi kruddho rāghavasya mahātmanaḥ.

nijaghāna urasi kruddhaḥ rāghavasya mahātmanaḥ

6. Then, the swift-handed night-wanderer (niśācara), Rāvaṇa, enraged, struck thousands of arrows into the chest of the great-souled Rāma (rāghava).
स शोणितसमादिग्धः समरे लक्ष्मणाग्रजः ।
दृष्टः फुल्ल इवारण्ये सुमहान् किंशुकद्रुमः ॥७॥
7. sa śoṇitasamādigdhaḥ samare lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ ,
dṛṣṭaḥ phulla ivāraṇye sumahān kiṃśukadrumaḥ.

dṛṣṭaḥ phullaḥ iva araṇye sumahān kiṃśukadrumaḥ

7. Smeared with blood in battle, Lakshmana's elder brother (Rama) appeared like a very large, blossoming palāśa tree in the forest.
शराभिघातसंरब्धः सो ऽपि जग्राह सायकान् ।
काकुत्स्थः सुमहातेजा युगान्तादित्यवर्चसः ॥८॥
8. śarābhighātasaṃrabdhaḥ so'pi jagrāha sāyakān ,
kākutsthaḥ sumahātejā yugāntādityavarcasaḥ.
8. śarābhighātasaṃrabdhaḥ saḥ api jagrāha sāyakān
kākutsthaḥ sumahātejāḥ yugāntādityavarcasaḥ

8. Enraged by the impact of arrows, Rama (kākutstha), possessing immense radiance and the brilliance of the sun at the end of an epoch (yuga), also grasped his arrows.
ततो ऽन्योन्यं सुसंरब्धाव् उभौ तौ रामरावणौ ।
शरान्धकारे समरे नोपालक्षयतां तदा ॥९॥
9. tato'nyonyaṃ susaṃrabdhāv ubhau tau rāmarāvaṇau ,
śarāndhakāre samare nopālakṣayatāṃ tadā.
9. tataḥ anyonyam susaṃrabdhau ubhau tau rāmarāvaṇau
śarāndhakāre samare na upālakṣayatām tadā
9. tataḥ tadā ubhau tau rāmarāvaṇau anyonyam
susaṃrabdhau śarāndhakāre samare na upālakṣayatām
9. Then, those two, Rama and Ravana, greatly enraged with each other, could not perceive one another in the battle amidst the darkness of arrows.
ततः क्रोधसमाविष्टो रामो दशरथात्मजः ।
उवाच रावणं वीरः प्रहस्य परुषं वचः ॥१०॥
10. tataḥ krodhasamāviṣṭo rāmo daśarathātmajaḥ ,
uvāca rāvaṇaṃ vīraḥ prahasya paruṣaṃ vacaḥ.
10. tataḥ krodhasamāviṣṭaḥ rāmaḥ daśarathātmajaḥ
uvāca rāvaṇam vīraḥ prahasya paruṣam vacaḥ
10. tataḥ krodhasamāviṣṭaḥ vīraḥ daśarathātmajaḥ

10. Then, the valiant Rama, son of Dasharatha, filled with rage, let out a laugh and spoke harsh words to Ravana.
मम भार्या जनस्थानादज्ञानाद् राक्षसाधम ।
हृता ते विवशा यस्मात्तस्मात्त्वं नासि वीर्यवान् ॥११॥
11. mama bhāryā janasthānādajñānād rākṣasādhama ,
hṛtā te vivaśā yasmāttasmāttvaṃ nāsi vīryavān.
11. mama bhāryā janasthānāt ajñānāt rākṣasādhama hṛtā
te vivaśā yasmāt tasmāt tvam na asi vīryavān
11. rākṣasādhama te mama vivaśā bhāryā janasthānāt
ajñānāt hṛtā yasmāt tasmāt tvam vīryavān na asi
11. O vilest of demons, you abducted my helpless wife from Janasthana, an act born of your ignorance. Because you did so, you are not truly mighty.
मया विरहितां दीनां वर्तमानां महावने ।
वैदेहीं प्रसभं हृत्वा शूरो ऽहमिति मन्यसे ॥१२॥
12. mayā virahitāṃ dīnāṃ vartamānāṃ mahāvane ,
vaidehīṃ prasabhaṃ hṛtvā śūro'hamiti manyase.
12. mayā virahitām dīnām vartamānām mahāvane
vaidehīm prasabham hṛtvā śūraḥ aham iti manyase
12. mayā virahitām dīnām mahāvane vartamānām
vaidehīm prasabham hṛtvā aham śūraḥ iti manyase
12. Having forcibly abducted Vaidehi, who was forlorn and dwelling in the great forest, separated from me, you consider yourself a hero.
स्त्रीषु शूर विनाथासु परदाराभिमर्शके ।
कृत्वा कापुरुषं कर्म शूरो ऽहमिति मन्यसे ॥१३॥
13. strīṣu śūra vināthāsu paradārābhimarśake ,
kṛtvā kāpuruṣaṃ karma śūro'hamiti manyase.
13. strīṣu śūra vināthāsu paradārābhimarśake
kṛtvā kāpuruṣam karma śūraḥ aham iti manyase
13. strīṣu vināthāsu śūra paradārābhimarśake
kāpuruṣam karma kṛtvā aham śūraḥ iti manyase
13. O hero among defenseless women, O defiler of others' wives! Having performed such a cowardly act, you still consider yourself a hero.
भिन्नमर्याद निर्लज्ज चारित्रेष्वनवस्थित ।
दर्पान्मृत्युमुपादाय शूरो ऽहमिति मन्यसे ॥१४॥
14. bhinnamaryāda nirlajja cāritreṣvanavasthita ,
darpānmṛtyumupādāya śūro'hamiti manyase.
14. bhinnamaryāda nirlajja cāritreṣu anavasthita
darpāt mṛtyum upādāya śūraḥ aham iti manyase
14. bhinnamaryāda nirlajja cāritreṣu anavasthita

14. O transgressor of limits, O shameless one, unsteady in character! Having embraced death through your arrogance, you still consider yourself a hero.
शूरेण धनदभ्रात्रा बलैः समुदितेन च ।
श्लाघनीयं यशस्यं च कृतं कर्म महत्त्वया ॥१५॥
15. śūreṇa dhanadabhrātrā balaiḥ samuditena ca ,
ślāghanīyaṃ yaśasyaṃ ca kṛtaṃ karma mahattvayā.
15. śūreṇa dhanadabhrātrā balaiḥ samuditena ca
ślāghanīyam yaśasyam ca kṛtam karma mahattvayā
15. By your greatness, O hero, brother of Kubera, and one endowed with mighty forces, a deed has been performed that is supposedly praiseworthy and glorious.
उत्सेकेनाभिपन्नस्य गर्हितस्याहितस्य च ।
कर्मणः प्राप्नुहीदानीं तस्याद्य सुमहत् फलम् ॥१६॥
16. utsekenābhipannasya garhitasyāhitasya ca ,
karmaṇaḥ prāpnuhīdānīṃ tasyādya sumahat phalam.
16. utsekena abhipannasya garhitasya ahitasya ca
karmaṇaḥ prāpnuhi idānīm tasya adya sumahat phalam
16. You shall now, today, obtain the exceedingly great fruit of that reprehensible and harmful act (karma) that you committed, being overcome by arrogance.
शूरो ऽहमिति चात्मानमवगच्छसि दुर्मते ।
नैव लज्जास्ति ते सीतां चोरवद्व्यपकर्षतः ॥१७॥
17. śūro'hamiti cātmānamavagacchasi durmate ,
naiva lajjāsti te sītāṃ coravadvyapakarṣataḥ.
17. śūraḥ aham iti ca ātmānam avagacchasi durmate na
eva lajjā asti te sītām coravat vyapakarṣataḥ
17. O evil-minded one, you consider your self (ātman) a hero, yet there is certainly no shame in you, even as you abduct Sita like a thief.
यदि मत्संनिधौ सीता धर्षिता स्यात्त्वया बलात् ।
भ्रातरं तु खरं पश्येस्तदा मत्सायकैर्हतः ॥१८॥
18. yadi matsaṃnidhau sītā dharṣitā syāttvayā balāt ,
bhrātaraṃ tu kharaṃ paśyestadā matsāyakairhataḥ.
18. yadi matsaṃnidhau sītā dharṣitā syāt tvayā balāt
bhrātaram tu kharam paśyeḥ tadā matsāyakaiḥ hataḥ
18. If Sita had been forcibly assaulted by you in my presence, then you, slain by my arrows, would have rejoined your brother Khara.
दिष्ट्यासि मम दुष्टात्मंश्चक्षुर्विषयमागतः ।
अद्य त्वां सायकैस्तीक्ष्णैर्नयामि यमसादनम् ॥१९॥
19. diṣṭyāsi mama duṣṭātmaṃścakṣurviṣayamāgataḥ ,
adya tvāṃ sāyakaistīkṣṇairnayāmi yamasādanam.
19. diṣṭyā asi mama duṣṭātman cakṣurviṣayam āgataḥ
adya tvām sāyakaiḥ tīkṣṇaiḥ nayāmi yamasādanam
19. adya duṣṭātman,
tvam mama cakṣurviṣayam āgataḥ asi diṣṭyā.
adya tīkṣṇaiḥ sāyakaiḥ tvām yamasādanam nayāmi.
19. Fortunately, O wicked one, you have come within my sight. Today, with sharp arrows, I shall send you to the abode of Yama.
अद्य ते मच्छरैश्छिन्नं शिरो ज्वलितकुण्डलम् ।
क्रव्यादा व्यपकर्षन्तु विकीर्णं रणपांसुषु ॥२०॥
20. adya te maccharaiśchinnaṃ śiro jvalitakuṇḍalam ,
kravyādā vyapakarṣantu vikīrṇaṃ raṇapāṃsuṣu.
20. adya te maccharaiḥ chinnam śiraḥ jvalitakuṇḍalam
kravyādāḥ vyapakarṣantu vikīrṇam raṇapāṁsuṣu
20. adya te jvalitakuṇḍalam śiraḥ maccharaiḥ chinnam,
kravyādāḥ raṇapāṁsuṣu vikīrṇam vyapakarṣantu.
20. Today, may the flesh-eaters drag away your head, severed by my arrows and adorned with blazing earrings, as it lies scattered in the dust of battle.
निपत्योरसि गृध्रास्ते क्षितौ क्षिप्तस्य रावण ।
पिबन्तु रुधिरं तर्षाद्बाणशल्यान्तरोथितम् ॥२१॥
21. nipatyorasi gṛdhrāste kṣitau kṣiptasya rāvaṇa ,
pibantu rudhiraṃ tarṣādbāṇaśalyāntarothitam.
21. nipatya urasi gṛdhrāḥ te kṣitau kṣiptasya rāvaṇa
pibantu rudhiram tarṣāt bāṇaśalyāntarotthitam
21. rāvaṇa kṣitau kṣiptasya te urasi nipatya gṛdhrāḥ tarṣāt bāṇaśalyāntarotthitam rudhiram pibantu.
21. O Rāvaṇa, as you lie fallen on the ground, may the vultures descend upon your chest and eagerly drink the blood that surges forth from within your arrow-wounds.
अद्य मद्बाणाभिन्नस्य गतासोः पतितस्य ते ।
कर्षन्त्वन्त्राणि पतगा गरुत्मन्त इवोरगान् ॥२२॥
22. adya madbāṇābhinnasya gatāsoḥ patitasya te ,
karṣantvantrāṇi patagā garutmanta ivoragān.
22. adya madbāṇābhinnasya gatāsoḥ patitasya te
karṣantu antrāṇi patagāḥ garutmantaḥ iva uragān
22. adya te madbāṇābhinnasya gatāsoḥ patitasya patagāḥ garutmantaḥ iva uragān antrāṇi karṣantu.
22. Today, as you lie fallen, lifeless, and pierced by my arrows, may the birds of prey drag out your intestines, just as Garuḍas tear apart serpents.
इत्येवं स वदन् वीरो रामः शत्रुनिबर्हणः ।
राक्षसेन्द्रं समीपस्थं शरवर्षैरवाकिरत् ॥२३॥
23. ityevaṃ sa vadan vīro rāmaḥ śatrunibarhaṇaḥ ,
rākṣasendraṃ samīpasthaṃ śaravarṣairavākirat.
23. iti evam saḥ vadan vīraḥ rāmaḥ śatrunibarhaṇaḥ
rākṣasendram samīpastham śaravarṣaiḥ avākirat
23. saḥ vīraḥ śatrunibarhaṇaḥ rāmaḥ iti evam vadan
samīpastham rākṣasendram śaravarṣaiḥ avākirat
23. Thus speaking, that heroic Rama, the annihilator of enemies, showered the nearby lord of rākṣasas with volleys of arrows.
बभूव द्विगुणं वीर्यं बलं हर्षश्च संयुगे ।
रामस्यास्त्रबलं चैव शत्रोर्निधनकाङ्क्षिणः ॥२४॥
24. babhūva dviguṇaṃ vīryaṃ balaṃ harṣaśca saṃyuge ,
rāmasyāstrabalaṃ caiva śatrornidhanakāṅkṣiṇaḥ.
24. babhūva dviguṇam vīryam balam harṣaḥ ca saṃyuge
rāmasya astrabalam ca eva śatroḥ nidhanakāṅkṣiṇaḥ
24. saṃyuge śatroḥ nidhanakāṅkṣiṇaḥ rāmasya vīryam
balam harṣaḥ ca astrabalam ca eva dviguṇam babhūva
24. In battle, Rama's valor (vīrya), strength, and joy became twofold; indeed, the power of his weapons (astrabala) for annihilating the enemy also doubled.
प्रादुर्बभूवुरस्त्राणि सर्वाणि विदितात्मनः ।
प्रहर्षाच्च महातेजाः शीघ्रहस्ततरो ऽभवत् ॥२५॥
25. prādurbabhūvurastrāṇi sarvāṇi viditātmanaḥ ,
praharṣācca mahātejāḥ śīghrahastataro'bhavat.
25. prādurbabhūvuḥ astrāṇi sarvāṇi viditātmanaḥ
praharṣāt ca mahātejāḥ śīghrahastataraḥ abhavat
25. viditātmanaḥ sarvāṇi astrāṇi prādurbabhūvuḥ ca
praharṣāt mahātejāḥ śīghrahastataraḥ abhavat
25. All the divine weapons (astras) manifested for him whose true inner nature (ātman) was understood (i.e., Rama). And due to great exhilaration, that highly energetic (mahātejas) hero became even swifter-handed.
शुभान्येतानि चिह्नानि विज्ञायात्मगतानि सः ।
भूय एवार्दयद् रामो रावणं राक्षसान्तकृत् ॥२६॥
26. śubhānyetāni cihnāni vijñāyātmagatāni saḥ ,
bhūya evārdayad rāmo rāvaṇaṃ rākṣasāntakṛt.
26. śubhāni etāni cihnāni vijñāya ātmagatāni saḥ
bhūyaḥ eva ārdayat rāmaḥ rāvaṇam rākṣasāntakṛt
26. saḥ rākṣasāntakṛt rāmaḥ ātmagatāni etāni śubhāni
cihnāni vijñāya bhūyaḥ eva rāvaṇam ārdayat
26. Recognizing these auspicious signs manifest within himself, Rama, the annihilator of rākṣasas, tormented Ravana yet again.
हरीणां चाश्मनिकरैः शरवर्षैश्च राघवात् ।
हन्यमानो दशग्रीवो विघूर्णहृदयो ऽभवत् ॥२७॥
27. harīṇāṃ cāśmanikaraiḥ śaravarṣaiśca rāghavāt ,
hanyamāno daśagrīvo vighūrṇahṛdayo'bhavat.
27. harīṇām ca aśmanikaraiḥ śaravarṣaiḥ ca rāghavāt
hanyamānaḥ daśagrīvaḥ vighūrṇahṛdayaḥ abhavat
27. daśagrīvaḥ harīṇām aśmanikaraiḥ ca rāghavāt
śaravarṣaiḥ ca hanyamānaḥ vighūrṇahṛdayaḥ abhavat
27. Being struck by the monkeys with heaps of stones and by showers of arrows from Rāma, Daśagrīva's heart reeled and he became bewildered.
यदा च शस्त्रं नारेभे न व्यकर्षच्छरासनम् ।
नास्य प्रत्यकरोद्वीर्यं विक्लवेनान्तरात्मना ॥२८॥
28. yadā ca śastraṃ nārebhe na vyakarṣaccharāsanam ,
nāsya pratyakarodvīryaṃ viklavenāntarātmanā.
28. yadā ca śastram na ārebhe na vyakarṣat śarāsanam
na asya prati akarot vīryam viklaveṇa antarātmanā
28. yadā ca śastram na ārebhe na śarāsanam vyakarṣat
viklaveṇa antarātmanā asya vīryam na prati akarot
28. When he could neither take up a weapon nor draw his bow, he was unable to retaliate with valor, his inner self (antarātman) being distressed.
क्षिप्ताश्चापि शरास्तेन शस्त्राणि विविधानि च ।
न रणार्थाय वर्तन्ते मृत्युकाले ऽभिवर्ततः ॥२९॥
29. kṣiptāścāpi śarāstena śastrāṇi vividhāni ca ,
na raṇārthāya vartante mṛtyukāle'bhivartataḥ.
29. kṣiptāḥ ca api śarāḥ tena śastrāṇi vividhāni ca
na raṇārthāya vartante mṛtyukāle abhivartataḥ
29. tena kṣiptāḥ ca api śarāḥ ca vividhāni śastrāṇi
raṇārthāya na vartante mṛtyukāle abhivartataḥ
29. Even the arrows and various weapons hurled by him proved useless for battle, as he was approaching his moment of death.
सूतस्तु रथनेतास्य तदवस्थं निरीक्ष्य तम् ।
शनैर्युद्धादसंभान्तो रथं तस्यापवाहयत् ॥३०॥
30. sūtastu rathanetāsya tadavasthaṃ nirīkṣya tam ,
śanairyuddhādasaṃbhānto rathaṃ tasyāpavāhayat.
30. sūtaḥ tu rathanetā asya tadavastham nirīkṣya tam
śanaiḥ yuddhāt asaṃbhrāntaḥ ratham tasya apavāhayat
30. tu asya rathanetā sūtaḥ tadavastham tam nirīkṣya
asaṃbhrāntaḥ śanaiḥ yuddhāt tasya ratham apavāhayat
30. But his charioteer, seeing him in that state, calmly and slowly drove his chariot away from the battle.
