मकराक्षं हतं श्रुत्वा रावणः समितिंजयः ।
आदिदेशाथ संक्रुद्धो रणायेन्द्रजितं सुतम् ॥१॥

1. Upon hearing that Makarakṣa had been killed, Rāvaṇa, the conqueror in battle, became greatly enraged and then commanded his son, Indrajit, to go forth for battle.
जहि वीर महावीर्यौ भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ।
अदृश्यो दृश्यमानो वा सर्वथा त्वं बलाधिकः ॥२॥
2. jahi vīra mahāvīryau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau ,
adṛśyo dṛśyamāno vā sarvathā tvaṃ balādhikaḥ.

2. O hero, slay those two greatly powerful brothers, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa! Whether you are invisible or visible, you are always superior in strength.
त्वमप्रतिमकर्माणमिन्द्रं जयसि संयुगे ।
किं पुनर्मानुषौ दृष्ट्वा न वधिष्यसि संयुगे ॥३॥
3. tvamapratimakarmāṇamindraṃ jayasi saṃyuge ,
kiṃ punarmānuṣau dṛṣṭvā na vadhiṣyasi saṃyuge.

kim punaḥ mānuṣau dṛṣṭvā na vadhiṣyasi saṃyuge

3. You conquer Indra, who performs incomparable deeds, in battle. How much more, then, will you not slay these mere humans when you see them in combat?
तथोक्तो राक्षसेन्द्रेण प्रतिगृह्य पितुर्वचः ।
यज्ञभूमौ स विधिवत् पावकं जुहुवे न्द्रजित् ॥४॥
4. tathokto rākṣasendreṇa pratigṛhya piturvacaḥ ,
yajñabhūmau sa vidhivat pāvakaṃ juhuve ndrajit.

4. Thus addressed by the lord of rākṣasas, Indrajit, having accepted his father's command, duly offered oblations into the fire on the ritual ground (yajña).
जुह्वतश्चापि तत्राग्निं रक्तोष्णीषधराः स्त्रियः ।
आजग्मुस्तत्र संभ्रान्ता राक्षस्यो यत्र रावणिः ॥५॥
5. juhvataścāpi tatrāgniṃ raktoṣṇīṣadharāḥ striyaḥ ,
ājagmustatra saṃbhrāntā rākṣasyo yatra rāvaṇiḥ.

5. And while he was offering into the fire there, bewildered female rākṣasas, wearing red turbans, arrived where Rāvaṇa's son (Indrajit) was.
शस्त्राणि शरपत्राणि समिधो ऽथ विभीतकाः ।
लोहितानि च वासांसि स्रुवं कार्ष्णायसं तथा ॥६॥
6. śastrāṇi śarapatrāṇi samidho'tha vibhītakāḥ ,
lohitāni ca vāsāṃsi sruvaṃ kārṣṇāyasaṃ tathā.
6. śastrāṇi śarapatrāṇi samidhaḥ atha vibhītakāḥ

6. Weapons, arrows, and also sacrificial fuel sticks (samidh) and Vibhītaka fruits; and red garments, and similarly, a ladle made of black iron.
सर्वतो ऽग्निं समास्तीर्य शरपत्रैः समन्ततः ।
छागस्य सर्वकृष्णस्य गलं जग्राह जीवतः ॥७॥
7. sarvato'gniṃ samāstīrya śarapatraiḥ samantataḥ ,
chāgasya sarvakṛṣṇasya galaṃ jagrāha jīvataḥ.

7. Having spread arrows all around the fire, completely, he then seized the throat of a living, entirely black goat.
चरुहोमसमिद्धस्य विधूमस्य महार्चिषः ।
बभूवुस्तानि लिङ्गानि विजयं दर्शयन्ति च ॥८॥
8. caruhomasamiddhasya vidhūmasya mahārciṣaḥ ,
babhūvustāni liṅgāni vijayaṃ darśayanti ca.
8. caruhomasamiddhasya vidhūmasya mahārciṣaḥ
babhūvuḥ tāni liṅgāni vijayam darśayanti ca

8. And those auspicious signs, indicating victory, arose from the smokeless (Vedic fire ritual) (homa), which had mighty flames and was kindled with rice offerings.
प्रदक्षिणावर्तशिखस्तप्तहाटकसंनिभः ।
हविस्तत् प्रतिजग्राह पावकः स्वयमुत्थितः ॥९॥
9. pradakṣiṇāvartaśikhastaptahāṭakasaṃnibhaḥ ,
havistat pratijagrāha pāvakaḥ svayamutthitaḥ.
9. pradakṣiṇāvartaśikhaḥ taptahāṭakasaṃnibhaḥ
haviḥ tat pratijagrāha pāvakaḥ svayam utthitaḥ

9. The fire god, himself having risen, accepted that oblation, his flames swirling clockwise and resembling molten gold.
हुत्वाग्निं तर्पयित्वाथ देवदानवराक्षसान् ।
आरुरोह रथश्रेष्ठमन्तर्धानगतं शुभम् ॥१०॥
10. hutvāgniṃ tarpayitvātha devadānavarākṣasān ,
āruroha rathaśreṣṭhamantardhānagataṃ śubham.
10. hutvā agnim tarpayitvā atha devadānavarākṣasān
ārurūha rathaśreṣṭham antardhānagatam śubham
10. agnim hutvā atha devadānavarākṣasān tarpayitvā

10. Having made offerings to the fire and then satisfied the gods, Dānavas, and Rākṣasas, he ascended the splendid, invisible best of chariots.
स वाजिभिश्चतुर्भिस्तु बाणैश्च निशितैर्युतः ।
आरोपितमहाचापः शुशुभे स्यन्दनोत्तमे ॥११॥
11. sa vājibhiścaturbhistu bāṇaiśca niśitairyutaḥ ,
āropitamahācāpaḥ śuśubhe syandanottame.
11. saḥ vājibhiḥ caturbhiḥ tu bāṇaiḥ ca niśitaiḥ
yutaḥ āropitamahācāpaḥ śuśubhe syandanottame
11. saḥ tu caturbhiḥ vājibhiḥ ca niśitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ
yutaḥ āropitamahācāpaḥ syandanottame śuśubhe
11. He, equipped with four horses and sharp arrows, and with his great bow strung, shone splendidly in the excellent chariot.
जाज्वल्यमानो वपुषा तपनीयपरिच्छदः ।
शरैश्चन्द्रार्धचन्द्रैश्च स रथः समलंकृतः ॥१२॥
12. jājvalyamāno vapuṣā tapanīyaparicchadaḥ ,
śaraiścandrārdhacandraiśca sa rathaḥ samalaṃkṛtaḥ.
12. jājvalyamānaḥ vapuṣā tapanīyaparicchadaḥ śaraiḥ
ca candrārdhacandraiḥ ca saḥ rathaḥ samalaṅkṛtaḥ
12. That chariot, shining brilliantly with its golden coverings, was well-adorned with crescent-shaped arrows.
जाम्बूनदमहाकम्बुर्दीप्तपावकसंनिभः ।
बभूवेन्द्रजितः केतुर्वैदूर्यसमलंकृतः ॥१३॥
13. jāmbūnadamahākamburdīptapāvakasaṃnibhaḥ ,
babhūvendrajitaḥ keturvaidūryasamalaṃkṛtaḥ.
13. jāmbūnadamahākambuḥ dīptapāvakasaṃnibhaḥ
babhūva indrajitaḥ ketuḥ vaidūryasamalaṅkṛtaḥ
13. A great conch made of Jambūnada gold, shining like a blazing fire, became Indrajit's banner, beautifully adorned with lapis lazuli.
तेन चादित्यकल्पेन ब्रह्मास्त्रेण च पालितः ।
स बभूव दुराधर्षो रावणिः सुमहाबलः ॥१४॥
14. tena cādityakalpena brahmāstreṇa ca pālitaḥ ,
sa babhūva durādharṣo rāvaṇiḥ sumahābalaḥ.
14. tena ca ādityakalpena brahmāstreṇa ca pālitaḥ
saḥ babhūva durādharṣaḥ rāvaṇiḥ sumahābalaḥ
14. Protected by that Brahmāstra (weapon), which was brilliant like the sun, Rāvaṇa's son (Indrajit) became immensely powerful and invincible.
सो ऽभिनिर्याय नगरादिन्द्रजित् समितिंजयः ।
हुत्वाग्निं राक्षसैर्मन्त्रैरन्तर्धानगतो ऽब्रवीत् ॥१५॥
15. so'bhiniryāya nagarādindrajit samitiṃjayaḥ ,
hutvāgniṃ rākṣasairmantrairantardhānagato'bravīt.
15. saḥ abhiniryāya nagarāt indrajit samitiṃjayaḥ hutvā
agnim rākṣasaiḥ mantraiḥ antardhānagataḥ abravīt
15. Having emerged from the city, Indrajit, the conqueror of battle, offered oblations to the fire with Rākṣasa (demonic) incantations, and having then become invisible, he spoke.
अद्य हत्वाहवे यौ तौ मिथ्या प्रव्रजितौ वने ।
जयं पित्रे प्रदास्यामि रावणाय रणाधिकम् ॥१६॥
16. adya hatvāhave yau tau mithyā pravrajitau vane ,
jayaṃ pitre pradāsyāmi rāvaṇāya raṇādhikam.

vane jayam pitre pradāsyāmi rāvaṇāya raṇādhikam

16. Today, having killed in battle those two who are falsely living as ascetics in the forest, I will grant my father Rāvaṇa a victory superior in battle.
कृत्वा निर्वानरामुर्वीं हत्वा रामं सलक्ष्मणम् ।
करिष्ये परमां प्रीतिमित्युक्त्वान्तरधीयत ॥१७॥
17. kṛtvā nirvānarāmurvīṃ hatvā rāmaṃ salakṣmaṇam ,
kariṣye paramāṃ prītimityuktvāntaradhīyata.
17. kṛtvā nirvānarām urvīm hatvā rāmam sa-lakṣmaṇam
kariṣye paramām prītim iti uktvā antaradhīyata

17. Having made the earth devoid of monkeys, and having killed Rāma with Lakṣmaṇa, I will achieve supreme satisfaction," having said this, he disappeared.
आपपाताथ संक्रुद्धो दशग्रीवेण चोदितः ।
तीक्ष्णकार्मुकनाराचैस्तीक्ष्णस्त्विन्द्ररिपू रणे ॥१८॥
18. āpapātātha saṃkruddho daśagrīveṇa coditaḥ ,
tīkṣṇakārmukanārācaistīkṣṇastvindraripū raṇe.
18. āpapāta atha saṃkruddhaḥ daśagrīveṇa coditaḥ
tīkṣṇa-kārmuka-nārācaiḥ tīkṣṇaḥ tu indraripuḥ raṇe

18. Then, provoked by Daśagrīva (Rāvaṇa), the fierce enemy of Indra (Indrajit), highly enraged, assailed them in battle with sharp arrows from his bow.
स ददर्श महावीर्यौ नागौ त्रिशिरसाविव ।
सृजन्ताविषुजालानि वीरौ वानरमध्यगौ ॥१९॥
19. sa dadarśa mahāvīryau nāgau triśirasāviva ,
sṛjantāviṣujālāni vīrau vānaramadhyagau.
19. saḥ dadarśa mahāvīryau nāgau triśirasau iva
sṛjantau iṣujālāni vīrau vānara-madhyagau
19. saḥ dadarśa mahāvīryau nāgau triśirasau iva

19. He (Indrajit) saw the two immensely powerful ones, like two three-headed serpents, releasing torrents of arrows, the two heroes situated amidst the monkeys.
इमौ ताविति संचिन्त्य सज्यं कृत्वा च कार्मुकम् ।
संततानेषुधाराभिः पर्जन्य इव वृष्टिमान् ॥२०॥
20. imau tāviti saṃcintya sajyaṃ kṛtvā ca kārmukam ,
saṃtatāneṣudhārābhiḥ parjanya iva vṛṣṭimān.
20. imau tau iti saṃcintya sajyam kṛtvā ca kārmukam
saṃtatāneṣudhārābhiḥ parjanyaḥ iva vṛṣṭimān
20. Considering, 'These are the two,' and having strung his bow, he unleashed torrents of arrows, just like a rain cloud pouring down rain.
स तु वैहायसं प्राप्य सरथो रामलक्ष्मणौ ।
अचक्षुर्विषये तिष्ठन् विव्याध निशितैः शरैः ॥२१॥
21. sa tu vaihāyasaṃ prāpya saratho rāmalakṣmaṇau ,
acakṣurviṣaye tiṣṭhan vivyādha niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ.
21. saḥ tu vaihāyasam prāpya sarathaḥ rāmalakṣmaṇau
acakṣurviṣaye tiṣṭhan vivyādha niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
21. But he, having reached the sky with his chariot and remaining beyond their sight, shot at Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa with sharp arrows.
तौ तस्य शरवेगेन परीतौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ।
धनुषी सशरे कृत्वा दिव्यमस्त्रं प्रचक्रतुः ॥२२॥
22. tau tasya śaravegena parītau rāmalakṣmaṇau ,
dhanuṣī saśare kṛtvā divyamastraṃ pracakratuḥ.
22. tau tasya śaravegena parītau rāmalakṣmaṇau
dhanuṣī saśare kṛtvā divyam astram pracakratuḥ
22. Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, overwhelmed by the torrent of his arrows, then, taking their bows and arrows, deployed divine weapons.
प्रच्छादयन्तौ गगनं शरजालैर्महाबलौ ।
तमस्त्रैः सुरसंकाशौ नैव पस्पर्शतुः शरैः ॥२३॥
23. pracchādayantau gaganaṃ śarajālairmahābalau ,
tamastraiḥ surasaṃkāśau naiva pasparśatuḥ śaraiḥ.
23. pracchādayantau gaganam śarajālaiḥ mahābalau tam
astraiḥ surasaṃkāśau na eva pasparśatuḥ śaraiḥ
23. Those two mighty ones, resembling gods, covered the sky with their multitudes of arrows. Yet, they could not touch him with (their) weapons, nor even with arrows.
स हि धूमान्धकारं च चक्रे प्रच्छादयन्नभः ।
दिशश्चान्तर्दधे श्रीमान्नीहारतमसावृतः ॥२४॥
24. sa hi dhūmāndhakāraṃ ca cakre pracchādayannabhaḥ ,
diśaścāntardadhe śrīmānnīhāratamasāvṛtaḥ.
24. sa hi dhūmāndhakāram ca cakre pracchādayat nabhaḥ
diśaḥ ca antardadhe śrīmān nīhāratamasāvṛtaḥ
24. sa śrīmān nīhāratamasāvṛtaḥ dhūmāndhakāraṃ
cakre nabhaḥ pracchādayan diśaḥ ca antardadhe
24. Indeed, that glorious one created a smoky darkness, covering the sky. Enveloped in mist-like gloom, he also concealed the cardinal directions.
नैव ज्यातलनिर्घोषो न च नेमिखुरस्वनः ।
शुश्रुवे चरतस्तस्य न च रूपं प्रकाशते ॥२५॥
25. naiva jyātalanirghoṣo na ca nemikhurasvanaḥ ,
śuśruve caratastasya na ca rūpaṃ prakāśate.
25. na eva jyātalánirghoṣaḥ na ca nemikhurasvanaḥ
śuśruve carataḥ tasya na ca rūpaṃ prakāśate
25. tasya carataḥ jyātalánirghoṣaḥ na eva śuśruve
nemikhurasvanaḥ ca na śuśruve rūpaṃ ca na prakāśate
25. Neither the sound of his bowstring and palm-guard, nor the sound of wheels or hooves, was heard as he moved. Nor did his form become visible.
घनान्धकारे तिमिरे शरवर्षमिवाद्भुतम् ।
स ववर्ष महाबाहुर्नाराचशरवृष्टिभिः ॥२६॥
26. ghanāndhakāre timire śaravarṣamivādbhutam ,
sa vavarṣa mahābāhurnārācaśaravṛṣṭibhiḥ.
26. ghanāndhakāre timire śaravarṣam iva adbhutam
sa vavarṣa mahābāhuḥ nārācaśaravṛṣṭibhiḥ
26. sa mahābāhuḥ ghanāndhakāre timire adbhutaṃ

26. In the dense and deep darkness, that mighty-armed warrior rained down astonishing volleys of iron arrows, as if it were a wondrous shower of arrows.
स रामं सूर्यसंकाशैः शरैर्दत्तवरो भृशम् ।
विव्याध समरे क्रुद्धः सर्वगात्रेषु रावणिः ॥२७॥
27. sa rāmaṃ sūryasaṃkāśaiḥ śarairdattavaro bhṛśam ,
vivyādha samare kruddhaḥ sarvagātreṣu rāvaṇiḥ.
27. sa rāmam sūryasaṃkāśaiḥ śaraiḥ dattavaraḥ bhṛśam
vivyādha samare kruddhaḥ sarvagātreṣu rāvaṇiḥ
27. sa dattavaraḥ kruddhaḥ rāvaṇiḥ samare sūryasaṃkāśaiḥ
śaraiḥ bhṛśaṃ rāmaṃ sarvagātreṣu vivyādha
27. Enraged, the son of Ravana (Meghanada), who had received boons, intensely pierced Rama in all his limbs in battle with arrows shining like the sun.
तौ हन्यमानौ नाराचैर्धाराभिरिव पर्वतौ ।
हेमपुङ्खान्नरव्याघ्रौ तिग्मान्मुमुचतुः शरान् ॥२८॥
28. tau hanyamānau nārācairdhārābhiriva parvatau ,
hemapuṅkhānnaravyāghrau tigmānmumucatuḥ śarān.
28. tau hanyamānau nārācaiḥ dhārābhiḥ iva parvatāu
hemupuṅkhān naravyāghrāu tigman mumucatuḥ śarān

28. Though being struck by iron arrows, like two mountains assailed by torrents, those two tiger-like men (naravyāghrau) released their own sharp, golden-shafted arrows.
अन्तरिक्षं समासाद्य रावणिं कङ्कपत्रिणः ।
निकृत्य पतगा भूमौ पेतुस्ते शोणितोक्षिताः ॥२९॥
29. antarikṣaṃ samāsādya rāvaṇiṃ kaṅkapatriṇaḥ ,
nikṛtya patagā bhūmau petuste śoṇitokṣitāḥ.
29. antarikṣam samāsādya rāvaṇim kaṅkapatriṇaḥ
nikṛtya patagāḥ bhūmau petuḥ te śoṇitokṣitāḥ
29. kaṅkapatriṇaḥ patagāḥ antarikṣam samāsādya

29. Having traversed the sky and struck Rāvaṇa's son (Meghanāda), those heron-feathered arrows fell to the ground, soaked in blood.
अतिमात्रं शरौघेण पीड्यमानौ नरोत्तमौ ।
तानिषून्पततो भल्लैरनेकैर्निचकर्ततुः ॥३०॥
30. atimātraṃ śaraugheṇa pīḍyamānau narottamau ,
tāniṣūnpatato bhallairanekairnicakartatuḥ.
30. atimātram śaraugheṇa pīḍyamānau narottamau
tān iṣūn patataḥ bhallaiḥ anekaiḥ nicakartatuḥ
30. śaraugheṇa atimātram pīḍyamānau narottamau

30. Though greatly afflicted by the flood of arrows, those two best among men (narottamau) countered those falling arrows by severing them with many sharp (broad-headed) arrows.
यतो हि ददृशाते तौ शरान्निपतिताञ् शितान् ।
ततस्ततो दाशरथी ससृजाते ऽस्त्रमुत्तमम् ॥३१॥
31. yato hi dadṛśāte tau śarānnipatitāñ śitān ,
tatastato dāśarathī sasṛjāte'stramuttamam.
31. yataḥ hi dadṛśāte tau śarān nipatitān śitān
tataḥ tataḥ dāśarathī sasṛjāte astram uttamam
31. yataḥ hi tau śitān nipatitān śarān dadṛśāte
tataḥ tataḥ dāśarathī uttamam astram sasṛjāte
31. Indeed, wherever those two (Rama and Lakshmana) saw sharp, falling arrows, from those very directions the two sons of Daśaratha (Dāśarathī) released their excellent missiles.
रावणिस्तु दिशः सर्वा रथेनातिरथः पतन् ।
विव्याध तौ दाशरथी लघ्वस्त्रो निशितैः शरैः ॥३२॥
32. rāvaṇistu diśaḥ sarvā rathenātirathaḥ patan ,
vivyādha tau dāśarathī laghvastro niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ.

32. Rāvaṇa's son, an exceptional charioteer who was quick with his weapons, swiftly traversing all directions in his chariot, pierced those two sons of Daśaratha (Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa) with his sharp arrows.
तेनातिविद्धौ तौ वीरौ रुक्मपुङ्खैः सुसंहतैः ।
बभूवतुर्दाशरथी पुष्पिताविव किंशुकौ ॥३३॥
33. tenātividdhau tau vīrau rukmapuṅkhaiḥ susaṃhataiḥ ,
babhūvaturdāśarathī puṣpitāviva kiṃśukau.
33. tena atividdhau tau vīrau rukmapuṅkhaiḥ susaṃhataiḥ
babhūvatuḥ dāśarathī puṣpitau iva kiṃśukau

33. Those two heroes, the sons of Daśaratha, severely wounded by his firmly embedded, gold-feathered arrows, appeared like two blooming palāśa (kiṃśuka) trees.
नास्य वेद गतिं कश्चिन्न च रूपं धनुः शरान् ।
न चान्यद्विदितं किं चित् सूर्यस्येवाभ्रसंप्लवे ॥३४॥
34. nāsya veda gatiṃ kaścinna ca rūpaṃ dhanuḥ śarān ,
na cānyadviditaṃ kiṃ cit sūryasyevābhrasaṃplave.
34. na asya veda gatim kaścit na ca rūpam dhanuḥ śarān |
na ca anyat viditam kim cit sūryasya iva abhrasaṃplave
34. kaścit asya gatim rūpam dhanuḥ śarān ca na veda ca
anyat kim cit viditam na sūryasya abhrasaṃplave iva
34. No one could discern his movements, form, bow, or arrows; nor was anything else about him clearly perceived, just like the sun when it is obscured by a mass of clouds.
तेन विद्धाश्च हरयो निहताश्च गतासवः ।
बभूवुः शतशस्तत्र पतिता धरणीतले ॥३५॥
35. tena viddhāśca harayo nihatāśca gatāsavaḥ ,
babhūvuḥ śataśastatra patitā dharaṇītale.
35. tena viddhāḥ ca harayaḥ nihatāḥ ca gatāsavaḥ
babhūvuḥ śataśaḥ tatra patitāḥ dharaṇītale
35. tena viddhāḥ ca nihatāḥ ca gatāsavaḥ harayaḥ

35. Pierced and slain by him, hundreds of monkeys, now lifeless, fell there onto the ground.
लक्ष्मणस्तु सुसंक्रुद्धो भ्रातरं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
ब्राह्ममस्त्रं प्रयोक्ष्यामि वधार्थं सर्वरक्षसाम् ॥३६॥
36. lakṣmaṇastu susaṃkruddho bhrātaraṃ vākyamabravīt ,
brāhmamastraṃ prayokṣyāmi vadhārthaṃ sarvarakṣasām.
36. lakṣmaṇaḥ tu susaṃkruddhaḥ bhrātaram vākyam abravīt
brāhmam astram prayokṣyāmi vadhārtham sarvarakṣasām
36. lakṣmaṇaḥ tu susaṃkruddhaḥ bhrātaram vākyam abravīt
"sarvarakṣasām vadhārtham brāhmam astram prayokṣyāmi"
36. Lakshmana, extremely enraged, spoke to his brother: "I will employ the divine weapon (brāhmāstra) for the destruction of all rākṣasas."
तमुवाच ततो रामो लक्ष्मणं शुभलक्षणम् ।
नैकस्य हेतो रक्षांसि पृथिव्यां हन्तुमर्हसि ॥३७॥
37. tamuvāca tato rāmo lakṣmaṇaṃ śubhalakṣaṇam ,
naikasya heto rakṣāṃsi pṛthivyāṃ hantumarhasi.
37. tam uvāca tataḥ rāmaḥ lakṣmaṇam śubhalakṣaṇam na
ekasya hetoḥ rakṣāṃsi pṛthivyām hantum arhasi
37. tataḥ rāmaḥ śubhalakṣaṇam tam lakṣmaṇam uvāca
"ekasya hetoḥ pṛthivyām rakṣāṃsi hantum na arhasi"
37. Then Rama said to Lakshmana, who possessed auspicious marks: "You should not kill all the rākṣasas on earth for the sake of merely one reason."
अयुध्यमानं प्रच्छन्नं प्राञ्जलिं शरणागतम् ।
पलायन्तं प्रमत्तं वा न त्वं हन्तुमिहार्हसि ॥३८॥
38. ayudhyamānaṃ pracchannaṃ prāñjaliṃ śaraṇāgatam ,
palāyantaṃ pramattaṃ vā na tvaṃ hantumihārhasi.
38. ayudhyamānam pracchannam prāñjalim śaraṇāgatam
palāyantam pramattam vā na tvam hantum iha arhasi
38. tvam iha ayudhyamānam pracchannam prāñjalim
śaraṇāgatam palāyantam pramattam vā hantum na arhasi
38. You should not kill here one who is not fighting, one who is hidden, one who has clasped his hands in supplication, one who has sought refuge, or one who is fleeing, or one who is heedless.
अस्यैव तु वधे यत्नं करिष्यावो महाबल ।
आदेक्ष्यावो महावेगानस्त्रानाशीविषोपमान् ॥३९॥
39. asyaiva tu vadhe yatnaṃ kariṣyāvo mahābala ,
ādekṣyāvo mahāvegānastrānāśīviṣopamān.
39. asya eva tu vadhe yatnam kariṣyāvaḥ mahābala
ādekṣyāvaḥ mahāvegān astrān āśīviṣopamān
39. mahābala,
tu asya eva vadhe yatnam kariṣyāvaḥ.
mahāvegān āśīviṣopamān astrān ādekṣyāvaḥ.
39. But, O mighty one, we two shall exert ourselves solely for his destruction. We shall unleash exceedingly swift weapons, comparable to venomous snakes.
तमेनं मायिनं क्षुद्रमन्तर्हितरथं बलात् ।
राक्षसं निहनिष्यन्ति दृष्ट्वा वानरयूथपाः ॥४०॥
40. tamenaṃ māyinaṃ kṣudramantarhitarathaṃ balāt ,
rākṣasaṃ nihaniṣyanti dṛṣṭvā vānarayūthapāḥ.
40. tam enam māyinam kṣudram antarhitaratham balāt
rākṣasam nihaniṣyanti dṛṣṭvā vānarayūthapāḥ
40. vānarayūthapāḥ dṛṣṭvā tam enam māyinam kṣudram
antarhitaratham rākṣasam balāt nihaniṣyanti
40. When they see that deceitful, wretched demon, whose chariot is concealed, the leaders of the monkey troops will forcibly kill him.
यद्येष भूमिं विशते दिवं वा रसातलं वापि नभस्तलं वा ।
एवं निगूढो ऽपि ममास्त्रदग्धः पतिष्यते भूमितले गतासुः ॥४१॥
41. yadyeṣa bhūmiṃ viśate divaṃ vā rasātalaṃ vāpi nabhastalaṃ vā ,
evaṃ nigūḍho'pi mamāstradagdhaḥ patiṣyate bhūmitale gatāsuḥ.
41. yadi eṣaḥ bhūmim viśate divam vā
rasātalam vā api nabhastalam vā
evam nigūḍhaḥ api mama astradagdhaḥ
patiṣyate bhūmitale gatāsuḥ
41. yadi eṣaḥ bhūmim vā divam vā
rasātalam vā api nabhastalam viśate
evam nigūḍhaḥ api mama astradagdhaḥ
gatāsuḥ bhūmitale patiṣyate
41. If he enters the earth, or the sky, or the netherworld, or even the atmosphere, even if he is thus concealed, burnt by my weapon, he will fall to the surface of the earth, lifeless.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा वचनं महात्मा रघुप्रवीरः प्लवगर्षभैर्वृतः ।
वधाय रौद्रस्य नृशंसकर्मणस्तदा महात्मा त्वरितं निरीक्षते ॥४२॥
42. ityevamuktvā vacanaṃ mahātmā raghupravīraḥ plavagarṣabhairvṛtaḥ ,
vadhāya raudrasya nṛśaṃsakarmaṇastadā mahātmā tvaritaṃ nirīkṣate.
42. iti evam uktvā vacanam mahātmā
raghupravīraḥ plavagarṣabhaiḥ vṛtaḥ
vadhāya raudrasya nṛśaṃsakarmaṇaḥ
tadā mahātmā tvaritam nirīkṣate

42. Having thus spoken, the great-souled best of the Raghus, surrounded by the chief monkeys, then swiftly looked for that dreadful, cruelly-acting (demon) in order to kill him.
