वाल्मीकिनैवमुक्तस्तु राघवः प्रत्यभाषत ।
प्राञ्जलिर्जगतो मध्ये दृष्ट्वा तां देववर्णिनीम् ॥१॥
1. vālmīkinaivamuktastu rāghavaḥ pratyabhāṣata ,
prāñjalirjagato madhye dṛṣṭvā tāṃ devavarṇinīm.

1. Thus addressed by Vālmīki, Rāma replied, with folded hands, in the midst of the assembly, upon seeing that divine-looking lady.
एवमेतन्महाभाग यथा वदसि धर्मवित् ।
प्रत्ययो हि मम ब्रह्मंस्तव वाक्यैरकल्मषैः ॥२॥
2. evametanmahābhāga yathā vadasi dharmavit ,
pratyayo hi mama brahmaṃstava vākyairakalmaṣaiḥ.
2. evam etat mahābhāga yathā vadasi dharmavit
pratyayaḥ hi mama brahman tava vākyaiḥ akalmaṣaiḥ
2. mahābhāga dharmavit brahman evam etat yathā
vadasi hi mama akalmaṣaiḥ tava vākyaiḥ pratyayaḥ
2. O venerable one, knower of (natural law) dharma, this is indeed as you say. My trust in your pure words is unwavering, O Brahmin.
प्रत्ययो हि पुरा दत्तो वैदेह्या सुरसंनिधौ ।
सेयं लोकभयाद्ब्रह्मन्नपापेत्यभिजानता ।
परित्यक्ता मया सीता तद्भवान् क्षन्तुमर्हति ॥३॥
3. pratyayo hi purā datto vaidehyā surasaṃnidhau ,
seyaṃ lokabhayādbrahmannapāpetyabhijānatā ,
parityaktā mayā sītā tadbhavān kṣantumarhati.
3. pratyayaḥ hi purā dattaḥ vaidehyā
surasaṃnidhau sā iyam lokabhayāt
brahman apāpā iti abhijānatā parityaktā
mayā sītā tat bhavān kṣantum arhati

3. Indeed, a guarantee was given by Sītā (daughter of Videha) before, in the presence of the gods. O Brahmin, knowing her to be innocent (apāpā), I abandoned her, Sītā, out of fear of public opinion. Therefore, you ought to forgive me.
जानामि चेमौ पुत्रौ मे यमजातौ कुशीलवौ ।
शुद्धायां जगतो मध्ये मैथिल्यां प्रीतिरस्तु मे ॥४॥
4. jānāmi cemau putrau me yamajātau kuśīlavau ,
śuddhāyāṃ jagato madhye maithilyāṃ prītirastu me.
4. jānāmi ca imau putrau me yam ajātau kuśīlavau
śuddhāyām jagataḥ madhye maithilyām prītiḥ astu me
4. ca imau me putrau yam ajātau kuśīlavau jānāmi
śuddhāyām jagataḥ madhye maithilyām me prītiḥ astu
4. And I know these two sons of mine, Kuśa and Lava, who were born unknown to me. Let my love (prīti) be for Sītā (daughter of Mithilā), who stands pure in the midst of the assembly.
अभिप्रायं तु विज्ञाय रामस्य सुरसत्तमाः ।
पितामहं पुरस्कृत्य सर्व एव समागताः ॥५॥
5. abhiprāyaṃ tu vijñāya rāmasya surasattamāḥ ,
pitāmahaṃ puraskṛtya sarva eva samāgatāḥ.
5. abhiprāyam tu vijñāya rāmasya surasattamāḥ
pitāmaham puraskṛtya sarva eva samāgatāḥ
5. surasattamāḥ sarve eva rāmasya abhiprāyam
vijñāya pitāmaham puraskṛtya samāgatāḥ
5. Having understood Rama's intention, all the chief deities, with Brahma, the grandfather, at their forefront, assembled.
आदित्या वसवो रुद्रा विश्वे देशा मरुद्गणाः ।
अश्विनाव् ऋषिगन्धर्वा अप्सराणां गणास्तथा ।
साध्याश्च देवाः सर्वे ते सर्वे च परमर्षयः ॥६॥
6. ādityā vasavo rudrā viśve deśā marudgaṇāḥ ,
aśvināv ṛṣigandharvā apsarāṇāṃ gaṇāstathā ,
sādhyāśca devāḥ sarve te sarve ca paramarṣayaḥ.
6. ādityāḥ vasavaḥ rudrāḥ viśve devāḥ
marudgaṇāḥ aśvinau ṛṣigandharvāḥ
apsarāṇām gaṇāḥ tathā sādhyāḥ ca
devāḥ sarve te sarve ca paramarṣayaḥ
6. ādityāḥ vasavaḥ rudrāḥ viśve devāḥ
marudgaṇāḥ aśvinau ṛṣigandharvāḥ
apsarāṇām gaṇāḥ tathā sādhyāḥ ca

6. The Adityas, Vasus, Rudras, Viśve Devas, and the hosts of Maruts; the two Ashvins, Rishis and Gandharvas, and hosts of Apsaras; and all those Sadhyas and other gods, along with all the great sages.
ततो वायुः शुभः पुण्यो दिव्यगन्धो मनोरमः ।
तं जनौघं सुरश्रेष्ठो ह्लादयामास सर्वतः ॥७॥
7. tato vāyuḥ śubhaḥ puṇyo divyagandho manoramaḥ ,
taṃ janaughaṃ suraśreṣṭho hlādayāmāsa sarvataḥ.
7. tataḥ vāyuḥ śubhaḥ puṇyaḥ divyagandhaḥ manoramaḥ
tam janaugham suraśreṣṭhaḥ hlādayāmāsa sarvataḥ
7. tataḥ suraśreṣṭhaḥ śubhaḥ puṇyaḥ divyagandhaḥ
manoramaḥ vāyuḥ tam janaugham sarvataḥ hlādayāmāsa
7. Then, a beautiful, sacred, divinely fragrant, and charming wind - the best among divine elements - delighted that multitude of people from all sides.
तदद्भुतमिवाचिन्त्यं निरीक्षन्ते समाहिताः ।
मानवाः सर्वराष्ट्रेभ्यः पूर्वं कृतयुगे यथा ॥८॥
8. tadadbhutamivācintyaṃ nirīkṣante samāhitāḥ ,
mānavāḥ sarvarāṣṭrebhyaḥ pūrvaṃ kṛtayuge yathā.
8. tat adbhutam iva acintyam nirīkṣante samāhitāḥ
mānavāḥ sarvarāṣṭrebhyaḥ pūrvam kṛtayuge yathā
8. sarvarāṣṭrebhyaḥ mānavāḥ samāhitāḥ pūrvam kṛtayuge
yathā tat adbhutam iva acintyam nirīkṣante
8. Humans from all nations, with focused attention, gazed upon that astonishing and inconceivable event, just as they used to in the Krita Yuga.
सर्वान् समागतान्दृष्ट्वा सीता काषायवासिनी ।
अब्रवीत् प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यमधोदृष्टिरवान्मुखी ॥९॥
9. sarvān samāgatāndṛṣṭvā sītā kāṣāyavāsinī ,
abravīt prāñjalirvākyamadhodṛṣṭiravānmukhī.
9. sarvān samāgatān dṛṣṭvā sītā kāṣāyavāsinī
abravīt prāñjaliḥ vākyam adhodṛṣṭiḥ avānmukhī
9. sītā kāṣāyavāsinī adhodṛṣṭiḥ avānmukhī
prāñjaliḥ samāgatān sarvān dṛṣṭvā vākyam abravīt
9. Having seen everyone assembled, Sita, dressed in saffron robes, with her gaze and face downcast, spoke with folded hands.
यथाहं राघवादन्यं मनसापि न चिन्तये ।
तथा मे माधवी देवी विवरं दातुमर्हति ॥१०॥
10. yathāhaṃ rāghavādanyaṃ manasāpi na cintaye ,
tathā me mādhavī devī vivaraṃ dātumarhati.
10. yathā aham rāghavāt anyam manasā api na cintaye
tathā me mādhavī devī vivaram dātum arhati
10. aham rāghavāt anyam manasā api na cintaye yathā
tathā mādhavī devī me vivaram dātum arhati
10. Just as I do not think of anyone other than Raghava (Rama) even in my mind, so may the goddess Madhavi (Earth) grant me an opening.
तथा शपन्त्यां वैदेह्यां प्रादुरासीत्तदद्भुतम् ।
भूतलादुत्थितं दिव्यं सिंहासनमनुत्तमम् ॥११॥
11. tathā śapantyāṃ vaidehyāṃ prādurāsīttadadbhutam ,
bhūtalādutthitaṃ divyaṃ siṃhāsanamanuttamam.
11. tathā śapantyām vaidehyām prādurāsīt tat adbhutam
bhūtalāt utthitam divyam siṃhāsanam anuttamam
11. tathā vaidehyām śapantyām tat adbhutam divyam
anuttamam siṃhāsanam bhūtalāt utthitam prādurāsīt
11. As Vaidehi (Sita) was thus swearing, that wondrous, divine, unsurpassed throne, which had risen from the surface of the earth, appeared.
ध्रियमाणं शिरोभिस्तन्नागैरमितविक्रमैः ।
दिव्यं दिव्येन वपुषा सर्वरत्नविभूषितम् ॥१२॥
12. dhriyamāṇaṃ śirobhistannāgairamitavikramaiḥ ,
divyaṃ divyena vapuṣā sarvaratnavibhūṣitam.
12. dhriyamāṇam śirobhiḥ tat nāgaiḥ amita-vikramaiḥ
divyam divyena vapuṣā sarva-ratna-vibhūṣitam
12. tat divyam amita-vikramaiḥ nāgaiḥ śirobhiḥ
dhriyamāṇam divyena vapuṣā sarva-ratna-vibhūṣitam
12. That divine throne, held by the heads of nāgas (serpent deities) of immeasurable prowess, was adorned with all jewels and possessed a divine form.
तस्मिंस्तु धरणी देवी बाहुभ्यां गृह्य मैथिलीम् ।
स्वागतेनाभिनन्द्यैनामासने चोपवेषयत् ॥१३॥
13. tasmiṃstu dharaṇī devī bāhubhyāṃ gṛhya maithilīm ,
svāgatenābhinandyaināmāsane copaveṣayat.
13. tasmin tu dharaṇī devī bāhubhyām gṛhya maithilīm
svāgatena abhinandya enām āsane ca upaveṣayat
13. tasmin tu dharaṇī devī bāhubhyām maithilīm gṛhya
svāgatena enām abhinandya ca āsane upaveṣayat
13. At that moment, Goddess Earth, holding Maithili in her two arms, welcomed her and made her sit upon a seat.
तामासनगतां दृष्ट्वा प्रविशन्तीं रसातलम् ।
पुण्यवृष्टिरविच्छिन्ना दिव्या सीतामवाकिरत् ॥१४॥
14. tāmāsanagatāṃ dṛṣṭvā praviśantīṃ rasātalam ,
puṇyavṛṣṭiravicchinnā divyā sītāmavākirat.
14. tām āsanagatām dṛṣṭvā praviśantīm rasātalam
puṇyavṛṣṭiḥ avicchinnā divyā sītām avākirat
14. tām āsanagatām rasātalam praviśantīm dṛṣṭvā
avicchinnā divyā puṇyavṛṣṭiḥ sītām avākirat
14. Having seen her (Sītā) seated and entering the netherworld, an uninterrupted, divine shower of auspiciousness fell upon Sītā.
साधुकारश्च सुमहान्देवानां सहसोत्थितः ।
साधु साध्विति वै सीते यस्यास्ते शीलमीदृशम् ॥१५॥
15. sādhukāraśca sumahāndevānāṃ sahasotthitaḥ ,
sādhu sādhviti vai sīte yasyāste śīlamīdṛśam.
15. sādhukāraḥ ca sumahān devānām sahasā utthitaḥ
sādhu sādhu iti vai sīte yasyāḥ te śīlam īdṛśam
15. ca devānām sumahān sādhukāraḥ sahasā utthitaḥ
sādhu sādhu iti vai sīte yasyāḥ te śīlam īdṛśam
15. And a very great shout of 'Excellent!' from the gods suddenly arose, saying, 'Excellent, excellent indeed, O Sītā, whose conduct (śīlam) is of such a noble kind!'
एवं बहुविधा वाचो ह्यन्तरिक्षगताः सुराः ।
व्याजह्रुर्हृष्टमनसो दृष्ट्वा सीताप्रवेशनम् ॥१६॥
16. evaṃ bahuvidhā vāco hyantarikṣagatāḥ surāḥ ,
vyājahrurhṛṣṭamanaso dṛṣṭvā sītāpraveśanam.
16. evam bahuvidhāḥ vācaḥ hi antarikṣagatāḥ surāḥ
vyājahruḥ hṛṣṭamanasaḥ dṛṣṭvā sītāpraveśanam
16. hi antarikṣagatāḥ hṛṣṭamanasaḥ surāḥ evam
bahuvidhāḥ vācaḥ sītāpraveśanam dṛṣṭvā vyājahruḥ
16. Indeed, the gods, dwelling in the sky, with joyful hearts, uttered many kinds of words after witnessing Sītā's entrance (into the earth).
यज्ञवाटगताश्चापि मुनयः सर्व एव ते ।
राजानश्च नरव्याघ्रा विस्मयान्नोपरेमिरे ॥१७॥
17. yajñavāṭagatāścāpi munayaḥ sarva eva te ,
rājānaśca naravyāghrā vismayānnoparemire.
17. yajñavāṭagatāḥ ca api munayaḥ sarve eva te
rājānaḥ ca naravyāghrāḥ vismayāt na uparemire
17. All those sages present at the Vedic ritual (yajña) enclosure, along with the kings, who were like tigers among men, could not contain their astonishment.
अन्तरिक्षे च भूमौ च सर्वे स्थावरजङ्गमाः ।
दानवाश्च महाकायाः पाताले पन्नगाधिपाः ॥१८॥
18. antarikṣe ca bhūmau ca sarve sthāvarajaṅgamāḥ ,
dānavāśca mahākāyāḥ pātāle pannagādhipāḥ.
18. antarikṣe ca bhūmau ca sarve sthāvarajaṅgamāḥ
dānavāḥ ca mahākāyāḥ pātāle pannagādhipāḥ
18. And in the sky and on the earth, all beings, both animate and inanimate, along with the colossal-bodied demons (dānavas) and the lords of serpents in the netherworld (were present and affected).
के चिद्विनेदुः संहृष्टाः के चिद्ध्यानपरायणाः ।
के चिद् रामं निरीक्षन्ते के चित् सीतामचेतनाः ॥१९॥
19. ke cidvineduḥ saṃhṛṣṭāḥ ke ciddhyānaparāyaṇāḥ ,
ke cid rāmaṃ nirīkṣante ke cit sītāmacetanāḥ.
19. ke cit vineduḥ saṃhṛṣṭāḥ ke cit dhyānaparāyaṇāḥ
ke cit rāmam nirīkṣante ke cit sītām acetanāḥ
19. Some, overjoyed, shouted; some were absorbed in profound contemplation (dhyāna); some gazed at Rāma; and some, rendered senseless, gazed at Sītā.
सीताप्रवेशनं दृष्ट्वा तेषामासीत् समागमः ।
तं मुहूर्तमिवात्यर्थं सर्वं संमोहितं जगत् ॥२०॥
20. sītāpraveśanaṃ dṛṣṭvā teṣāmāsīt samāgamaḥ ,
taṃ muhūrtamivātyarthaṃ sarvaṃ saṃmohitaṃ jagat.
20. sītāpraveśanam dṛṣṭvā teṣām āsīt samāgamaḥ tam
muhūrtam iva atyartham sarvam saṃmohitam jagat
20. Upon witnessing Sītā's entrance, there was a coming together (of focus/attention) among them. For that moment, it was as if the entire world was exceedingly bewildered.
