विभीषण वचः श्रुत्वा रावणिः क्रोधमूर्छितः ।

1. Having heard Vibhīṣaṇa's words, Rāvaṇi (Indrajit) was overcome with rage. He spoke harsh words and quickly leaped up.
उद्यतायुधनिस्त्रिंशो रथे तु समलंकृते ।
कालाश्वयुक्ते महति स्थितः कालान्तकोपमः ॥२॥
2. udyatāyudhanistriṃśo rathe tu samalaṃkṛte ,
kālāśvayukte mahati sthitaḥ kālāntakopamaḥ.

2. With his sword raised as a weapon, he stood on a magnificent, well-decorated chariot drawn by black horses, resembling Yama (kālāntaka), the destroyer.
महाप्रमाणमुद्यम्य विपुलं वेगवद्दृढम् ।
धनुर्भीमं परामृश्य शरांश्चामित्रनाशनान् ॥३॥
3. mahāpramāṇamudyamya vipulaṃ vegavaddṛḍham ,
dhanurbhīmaṃ parāmṛśya śarāṃścāmitranāśanān.

3. Lifting a terrifying bow of great size, vast, swift, and strong, and grasping arrows that destroy enemies.
उवाचैनं समारब्धः सौमित्रिं सविभीषणम् ।
तांश्च वानरशार्दूलान्पश्यध्वं मे पराक्रमम् ॥४॥
4. uvācainaṃ samārabdhaḥ saumitriṃ savibhīṣaṇam ,
tāṃśca vānaraśārdūlānpaśyadhvaṃ me parākramam.

tān ca vānaraśārdūlān paśyadhvam me parākramam

4. He began and said to Lakṣmaṇa (Saumitri), to Vibhīṣaṇa, and to those excellent Vānaras: "Behold my prowess!"
अद्य मत्कार्मुकोत्सृष्टं शरवर्षं दुरासदम् ।
मुक्तं वर्षमिवाकाशे वारयिष्यथ संयुगे ॥५॥
5. adya matkārmukotsṛṣṭaṃ śaravarṣaṃ durāsadam ,
muktaṃ varṣamivākāśe vārayiṣyatha saṃyuge.
5. adya matkārmuka utsṛṣṭam śaravarṣam durāsadam
muktam varṣam iva ākāśe vārayiṣyatha saṃyuge
5. Today, in battle, you will try to ward off the irresistible shower of arrows released from my bow, like rain poured forth from the sky.
अद्य वो मामका बाणा महाकार्मुकनिःसृताः ।
विधमिष्यन्ति गात्राणि तूलराशिमिवानलः ॥६॥
6. adya vo māmakā bāṇā mahākārmukaniḥsṛtāḥ ,
vidhamiṣyanti gātrāṇi tūlarāśimivānalaḥ.
6. adya vaḥ māmakāḥ bāṇāḥ mahākārmukaniḥsṛtāḥ
vidhamiṣyanti gātrāṇi tūlarāśim iva analaḥ
6. Today, my arrows, discharged from my great bow, will consume your bodies, just as fire consumes a heap of cotton.
तीक्ष्णसायकनिर्भिन्नाञ् शूलशक्त्यृष्टितोमरैः ।
अद्य वो गमयिष्यामि सर्वानेव यमक्षयम् ॥७॥
7. tīkṣṇasāyakanirbhinnāñ śūlaśaktyṛṣṭitomaraiḥ ,
adya vo gamayiṣyāmi sarvāneva yamakṣayam.
7. tīkṣṇasāyakanirbhinnān śūlaśaktyṛṣṭitomaraiḥ
adya vaḥ gamayiṣyāmi sarvān eva yamakṣayam
7. Today, I shall send all of you, pierced by sharp arrows, spears, javelins, lances, and iron clubs, to the abode of Yama (yamakṣayam).
क्षिपतः शरवर्षाणि क्षिप्रहस्तस्य मे युधि ।
जीमूतस्येव नदतः कः स्थास्यति ममाग्रतः ॥८॥
8. kṣipataḥ śaravarṣāṇi kṣiprahastasya me yudhi ,
jīmūtasyeva nadataḥ kaḥ sthāsyati mamāgrataḥ.
8. kṣipataḥ śaravarṣāṇi kṣiprahastasya me yudhi
jīmūtasya iva nadataḥ kaḥ sthāsyati mama agrataḥ
8. Who will be able to stand before me in battle, when I, with swift hands, unleash showers of arrows, just like a thundering cloud pours forth its rain?
तच्छ्रुत्वा राक्षसेन्द्रस्य गर्जितं लक्ष्मणस्तदा ।
अभीतवदनः क्रुद्धो रावणिं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥९॥
9. tacchrutvā rākṣasendrasya garjitaṃ lakṣmaṇastadā ,
abhītavadanaḥ kruddho rāvaṇiṃ vākyamabravīt.
9. tat śrutvā rākṣasendrasya garjitam lakṣmaṇaḥ tadā
abhītavadanaḥ kruddhaḥ rāvaṇim vākyam abravīt
9. tadā lakṣmaṇaḥ abhītavadanaḥ kruddhaḥ rākṣasendrasya

9. Having heard that roar of the lord of rākṣasas, Lakṣmaṇa, his face fearless and full of rage, then spoke to Rāvaṇi (Indrajit).
उक्तश्च दुर्गमः पारः कार्याणां राक्षस त्वया ।
कार्याणां कर्मणा पारं यो गच्छति स बुद्धिमान् ॥१०॥
10. uktaśca durgamaḥ pāraḥ kāryāṇāṃ rākṣasa tvayā ,
kāryāṇāṃ karmaṇā pāraṃ yo gacchati sa buddhimān.
10. uktaḥ ca durgamaḥ pāraḥ kāryāṇām rākṣasa tvayā
kāryāṇām karmaṇā pāram yaḥ gacchati saḥ buddhimān
10. rākṣasa tvayā kāryāṇām durgamaḥ pāraḥ uktaḥ ca
yaḥ karmaṇā kāryāṇām pāram gacchati saḥ buddhimān
10. O rākṣasa, you have declared that the accomplishment of deeds is difficult to attain. However, the one who actually reaches the goal of deeds through action (karma) is truly intelligent.
स त्वमर्थस्य हीनार्थो दुरवापस्य केन चित् ।
वचो व्याहृत्य जानीषे कृतार्थो ऽस्मीति दुर्मते ॥११॥
11. sa tvamarthasya hīnārtho duravāpasya kena cit ,
vaco vyāhṛtya jānīṣe kṛtārtho'smīti durmate.
11. saḥ tvam arthasya hīnārthaḥ duravāpasya kena cit
vacaḥ vyāhṛtya jānīṣe kṛtārthaḥ asmi iti durmate
11. durmate saḥ tvam kena cit duravāpasya arthasya
hīnārthaḥ vacaḥ vyāhṛtya "kṛtārthaḥ asmi" iti jānīṣe
11. O foolish one, you, whose objective is difficult for anyone to achieve and is therefore futile, merely by speaking words, believe, 'I have accomplished my goal!'
अन्तर्धानगतेनाजौ यस्त्वयाचरितस्तदा ।
तस्कराचरितो मार्गो नैष वीरनिषेवितः ॥१२॥
12. antardhānagatenājau yastvayācaritastadā ,
taskarācarito mārgo naiṣa vīraniṣevitaḥ.
12. antardhānagatena ājau yaḥ tvayā ācaritaḥ tadā
taskarācaritaḥ mārgaḥ na eṣaḥ vīraniṣevitaḥ
12. tadā ājau antardhānagatena tvayā yaḥ mārgaḥ ācaritaḥ,
eṣaḥ taskarācaritaḥ (asti),
na vīraniṣevitaḥ (asti)
12. The path that you then followed in battle by resorting to invisibility is the conduct of a thief; this path is certainly not frequented by heroes.
यथा बाणपथं प्राप्य स्थितो ऽहं तव राक्षस ।
दर्शयस्वाद्य तत्तेजो वाचा त्वं किं विकत्थसे ॥१३॥
13. yathā bāṇapathaṃ prāpya sthito'haṃ tava rākṣasa ,
darśayasvādya tattejo vācā tvaṃ kiṃ vikatthase.
13. yathā bāṇapatham prāpya sthitaḥ aham tava rākṣasa
darśayasva adya tat tejaḥ vācā tvam kim vikatthase
13. rākṣasa tava bāṇapatham prāpya aham sthitaḥ yathā
adya tat tejaḥ darśayasva tvam vācā kim vikatthase
13. O Rakshasa, now that I have reached the range of your arrows, show your power! Why do you merely boast with words?
एवमुक्तो धनुर्भीमं परामृश्य महाबलः ।
ससर्जे निशितान्बाणानिन्द्रजित् समिजिंजय ॥१४॥
14. evamukto dhanurbhīmaṃ parāmṛśya mahābalaḥ ,
sasarje niśitānbāṇānindrajit samijiṃjaya.
14. evam uktaḥ dhanuḥ bhīmam parāmṛśya mahābalaḥ
sasarje niśitān bāṇān indrajit samijiñjaya
14. evam uktaḥ mahābalaḥ samijiñjaya indrajit
bhīmam dhanuḥ parāmṛśya niśitān bāṇān sasarje
14. Addressed in this way, Indrajit, who possessed great strength and was a conqueror in battle, grasped his formidable bow and released sharpened arrows.
ते निसृष्टा महावेगाः शराः सर्पविषोपमाः ।
संप्राप्य लक्ष्मणं पेतुः श्वसन्त इव पन्नगाः ॥१५॥
15. te nisṛṣṭā mahāvegāḥ śarāḥ sarpaviṣopamāḥ ,
saṃprāpya lakṣmaṇaṃ petuḥ śvasanta iva pannagāḥ.
15. te nisṛṣṭāḥ mahāvegāḥ śarāḥ sarpaviṣopamāḥ
samprāpya lakṣmaṇam petuḥ śvasantaḥ iva pannagāḥ
15. te mahāvegāḥ sarpaviṣopamāḥ nisṛṣṭāḥ śarāḥ
lakṣmaṇam samprāpya śvasantaḥ pannagāḥ iva petuḥ
15. Those arrows, released with great velocity and resembling serpent poison, reached Lakshmana and fell upon him, as if they were hissing snakes.
शरैरतिमहावेगैर्वेगवान् रावणात्मजः ।
सौमित्रिमिन्द्रजिद् युद्धे विव्याध शुभलक्षणम् ॥१६॥
16. śarairatimahāvegairvegavān rāvaṇātmajaḥ ,
saumitrimindrajid yuddhe vivyādha śubhalakṣaṇam.
16. śaraiḥ atimahāvegaiḥ vegavān rāvaṇātmajaḥ
saumitrim indrajit yuddhe vivyādha śubhalakṣaṇam
16. vegavān rāvaṇātmajaḥ indrajit yuddhe atimahāvegaiḥ
śaraiḥ śubhalakṣaṇam saumitrim vivyādha
16. The swift Indrajit, son of Ravana, pierced Lakshmana, who possessed auspicious marks, in battle with arrows of extremely great velocity.
स शरैरतिविद्धाङ्गो रुधिरेण समुक्षितः ।
शुशुभे लक्ष्मणः श्रीमान् विधूम इव पावकः ॥१७॥
17. sa śarairatividdhāṅgo rudhireṇa samukṣitaḥ ,
śuśubhe lakṣmaṇaḥ śrīmān vidhūma iva pāvakaḥ.
17. sa śaraiḥ atividdhāṅgaḥ rudhireṇa samukṣitaḥ
śuśubhe lakṣmaṇaḥ śrīmān vidhūmaḥ iva pāvakaḥ
17. śrīmān lakṣmaṇaḥ saḥ śaraiḥ atividdhāṅgaḥ
rudhireṇa samukṣitaḥ vidhūmaḥ pāvakaḥ iva śuśubhe
17. The glorious Lakṣmaṇa, with his body severely pierced by arrows and drenched in blood, shone brightly, like a smokeless fire.
इन्द्रजित्त्वात्मनः कर्म प्रसमीक्ष्याधिगम्य च ।
विनद्य सुमहानादमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१८॥
18. indrajittvātmanaḥ karma prasamīkṣyādhigamya ca ,
vinadya sumahānādamidaṃ vacanamabravīt.
18. indrajit tu ātmanaḥ karma prasamīkṣya adhigamya
ca vinadya sumahānādam idam vacanam abravīt

18. Indrajit, having thoroughly considered and understood the nature of his own action (karma), and letting out a very loud roar, spoke these words.
पत्रिणः शितधारास्ते शरा मत्कार्मुकच्युताः ।
आदास्यन्ते ऽद्य सौमित्रे जीवितं जीवितान्तगाः ॥१९॥
19. patriṇaḥ śitadhārāste śarā matkārmukacyutāḥ ,
ādāsyante'dya saumitre jīvitaṃ jīvitāntagāḥ.
19. patriṇaḥ śitadhārāḥ te śarāḥ matkārmukacyutāḥ
ādāsyante adya saumitre jīvitam jīvitāntagāḥ
19. saumitre adya te matkārmukacyutāḥ patriṇaḥ
śitadhārāḥ jīvitāntagāḥ śarāḥ jīvitam ādāsyante
19. O son of Sumitrā, today those feathered, sharp-edged arrows, released from my bow, will take your life, as they lead to the end of life.
अद्य गोमायुसंघाश्च श्येनसंघाश्च लक्ष्मण ।
गृध्राश्च निपतन्तु त्वां गतासुं निहतं मया ॥२०॥
20. adya gomāyusaṃghāśca śyenasaṃghāśca lakṣmaṇa ,
gṛdhrāśca nipatantu tvāṃ gatāsuṃ nihataṃ mayā.
20. adya gomāyusaṃghāḥ ca śyenasaṃghāḥ ca lakṣmaṇa
gṛdhrāḥ ca nipatantu tvām gatāsum nihatam mayā
20. lakṣmaṇa adya mayā nihatam gatāsum tvām
gomāyusaṃghāḥ ca śyenasaṃghāḥ ca gṛdhrāḥ ca nipatantu
20. O Lakṣmaṇa, today may throngs of jackals, flocks of hawks, and vultures fall upon you, lifeless and slain by me.
क्षत्रबन्धुः सदानार्यो रामः परमदुर्मतिः ।
भक्तं भ्रातरमद्यैव त्वां द्रक्ष्यति मया हतम् ॥२१॥
21. kṣatrabandhuḥ sadānāryo rāmaḥ paramadurmatiḥ ,
bhaktaṃ bhrātaramadyaiva tvāṃ drakṣyati mayā hatam.
21. kṣatrabandhuḥ sadā anāryaḥ rāmaḥ paramadurmatiḥ
bhaktam bhrātaram adya eva tvām drakṣyati mayā hatam
21. rāmaḥ kṣatrabandhuḥ sadā anāryaḥ paramadurmatiḥ adya
eva mayā hatam bhaktam bhrātaram tvām drakṣyati
21. That Rama, who is merely a kṣatriya by birth, always ignoble and extremely evil-minded, will see you, his devoted brother, killed by me this very day.
विशस्तकवचं भूमौ व्यपविद्धशरासनम् ।
हृतोत्तमाङ्गं सौमित्रे त्वामद्य निहतं मया ॥२२॥
22. viśastakavacaṃ bhūmau vyapaviddhaśarāsanam ,
hṛtottamāṅgaṃ saumitre tvāmadya nihataṃ mayā.
22. viśastakavacam bhūmau vyapaviddhaśarāsanam
hṛtottamāṅgam saumitre tvām adya nihatam mayā
22. saumitre adya mayā bhūmau viśastakavacam

22. O son of Sumitra, (Rama will see) you today, killed by me, lying on the ground with your armor torn, your bow cast aside, and your head severed.
इति ब्रुवाणं संरब्धं परुषं रावणात्मजम् ।
हेतुमद्वाक्यमत्यर्थं लक्ष्मणः प्रत्युवाच ह ॥२३॥
23. iti bruvāṇaṃ saṃrabdhaṃ paruṣaṃ rāvaṇātmajam ,
hetumadvākyamatyarthaṃ lakṣmaṇaḥ pratyuvāca ha.
23. iti bruvāṇam saṃrabdham paruṣam rāvaṇātmajam
hetumat vākyam atyartham lakṣmaṇaḥ pratyuvāca ha
23. lakṣmaṇaḥ iti bruvāṇam saṃrabdham paruṣam
rāvaṇātmajam atyartham hetumat vākyam pratyuvāca ha
23. When the son of Ravana was speaking thus, enraged and harsh, Lakshmana replied to him with extremely meaningful words.
अकृत्वा कत्थसे कर्म किमर्थमिह राक्षस ।
कुरु तत् कर्म येनाहं श्रद्दध्यां तव कत्थनम् ॥२४॥
24. akṛtvā katthase karma kimarthamiha rākṣasa ,
kuru tat karma yenāhaṃ śraddadhyāṃ tava katthanam.
24. akṛtvā katthase karma kimartham iha rākṣasa kuru
tat karma yena aham śraddadhyām tava katthanam
24. rākṣasa iha akṛtvā karma kimartham katthase tat
karma kuru yena aham tava katthanam śraddadhyām
24. O demon, why do you boast here without having accomplished any deed? Perform that deed by which I may believe your boasting.
अनुक्त्वा परुषं वाक्यं किं चिदप्यनवक्षिपन् ।
अविकत्थन् वधिष्यामि त्वां पश्य पुरुषादन ॥२५॥
25. anuktvā paruṣaṃ vākyaṃ kiṃ cidapyanavakṣipan ,
avikatthan vadhiṣyāmi tvāṃ paśya puruṣādana.
25. anuktvā paruṣam vākyam kim cit api anavakṣipan
avikatthan vadhiṣyāmi tvām paśya puruṣādana
25. puruṣādana,
paruṣam vākyam kim cit api anuktvā,
anavakṣipan,
avikatthan,
tvām vadhiṣyāmi; paśya!
25. Without uttering a harsh word, without showing any disrespect, and without boasting, I will kill you. Just watch, O man-eater!
इत्युक्त्वा पञ्चनाराचानाकर्णापूरिताञ् शरान् ।
निचखान महावेगांल् लक्ष्मणो राक्षसोरसि ॥२६॥
26. ityuktvā pañcanārācānākarṇāpūritāñ śarān ,
nicakhāna mahāvegāṃl lakṣmaṇo rākṣasorasi.
26. iti uktvā pañcanārācān ākarṇāpūritān śarān
nicakhāna mahāvegān lakṣmaṇaḥ rākṣasorasi
26. iti uktvā,
lakṣmaṇaḥ ākarṇāpūritān mahāvegān pañcanārācān śarān rākṣasorasi nicakhāna.
26. Having spoken thus, Lakṣmaṇa then deeply struck five very swift, iron arrows, drawn back to the ear, into the chest of the rākṣasa.
स शरैराहतस्तेन सरोषो रावणात्मजः ।
सुप्रयुक्तैस्त्रिभिर्बाणैः प्रतिविव्याध लक्ष्मणम् ॥२७॥
27. sa śarairāhatastena saroṣo rāvaṇātmajaḥ ,
suprayuktaistribhirbāṇaiḥ prativivyādha lakṣmaṇam.
27. saḥ śaraiḥ āhataḥ tena saroṣaḥ rāvaṇātmajaḥ
suprayuktaiḥ tribhiḥ bāṇaiḥ prativivyādha lakṣmaṇam
27. tena śaraiḥ āhataḥ saḥ rāvaṇātmajaḥ saroṣaḥ,
suprayuktaiḥ tribhiḥ bāṇaiḥ lakṣmaṇam prativivyādha.
27. Struck by those arrows from Lakṣmaṇa, Rāvaṇa's son, enraged, retaliated by piercing Lakṣmaṇa with three well-aimed arrows.
स बभूव महाभीमो नरराक्षससिंहयोः ।
विमर्दस्तुमुलो युद्धे परस्परवधैषिणोः ॥२८॥
28. sa babhūva mahābhīmo nararākṣasasiṃhayoḥ ,
vimardastumulo yuddhe parasparavadhaiṣiṇoḥ.
28. saḥ babhūva mahābhīmaḥ nararākṣasasiṃhayoḥ
vimardaḥ tumulaḥ yuddhe parasparavadhaiṣiṇoḥ
28. saḥ yuddhe nararākṣasasiṃhayoḥ parasparavadhaiṣiṇoḥ mahābhīmaḥ tumulaḥ vimardaḥ babhūva.
28. That battle became an exceedingly dreadful and tumultuous clash between the lion among men (Lakṣmaṇa) and the lion among rākṣasas, both intent on each other's destruction.
उभौ हि बलसंपन्नाव् उभौ विक्रमशालिनौ ।
उभावपि सुविक्रान्तौ सर्वशस्त्रास्त्रकोविदौ ॥२९॥
29. ubhau hi balasaṃpannāv ubhau vikramaśālinau ,
ubhāvapi suvikrāntau sarvaśastrāstrakovidau.

ubhau api suvikrāntau sarvaśastrāstrakovidau

29. Indeed, both were endowed with strength, both possessed valor, and both were exceedingly valiant, skilled in all weapons and missiles.
उभौ परमदुर्जेयावतुल्यबलतेजसौ ।
युयुधाते महावीरौ ग्रहाविव नभो गतौ ॥३०॥
30. ubhau paramadurjeyāvatulyabalatejasau ,
yuyudhāte mahāvīrau grahāviva nabho gatau.

30. Both were supremely difficult to conquer, possessing incomparable strength and energy. Those great heroes fought like two planets moving across the sky.
बलवृत्राविव हि तौ युधि वै दुष्प्रधर्षणौ ।
युयुधाते महात्मानौ तदा केसरिणाविव ॥३१॥
31. balavṛtrāviva hi tau yudhi vai duṣpradharṣaṇau ,
yuyudhāte mahātmānau tadā kesariṇāviva.

31. Indeed, those two were like Bala and Vṛtra in battle, certainly difficult to overpower. Then, those great-souled ones fought like two lions.
बहूनवसृजन्तौ हि मार्गणौघानवस्थितौ ।
नरराक्षससिंहौ तौ प्रहृष्टावभ्ययुध्यताम् ॥३२॥
32. bahūnavasṛjantau hi mārgaṇaughānavasthitau ,
nararākṣasasiṃhau tau prahṛṣṭāvabhyayudhyatām.

nararākṣasasiṃhau tau prahṛṣṭau abhyayudhyatām
32. hi avasthitau tau nararākṣasasiṃhau bahūn
mārgaṇaughān avasṛjantau prahṛṣṭau abhyayudhyatām
32. Indeed, standing steadfast, those two lion-like figures, a man and a demon, released floods of arrows. Greatly delighted, they fought against each other.
सुसंप्रहृष्टौ नरराक्षसोत्तमौ जयैषिणौ मार्गणचापधारिणौ ।
परस्परं तौ प्रववर्षतुर्भृशं शरौघवर्षेण बलाहकाविव ॥३३॥
33. susaṃprahṛṣṭau nararākṣasottamau jayaiṣiṇau mārgaṇacāpadhāriṇau ,
parasparaṃ tau pravavarṣaturbhṛśaṃ śaraughavarṣeṇa balāhakāviva.
33. su-samprahṛṣṭau nara-rākṣasa-uttamau
jaya-eṣiṇau mārgaṇa-cāpa-dhāriṇau
parasparam tau pravavarṣatuḥ
bhṛśam śara-ogha-varṣeṇa balāhakā iva
33. Su-samprahṛṣṭau jaya-eṣiṇau mārgaṇa-cāpa-dhāriṇau nara-rākṣasa-uttamau tau balāhakā iva śara-ogha-varṣeṇa bhṛśam parasparam pravavarṣatuḥ.
33. Supremely delighted, those two excellent warriors, the human and the rākṣasa, both desirous of victory and bearing bows and arrows, intensely showered each other with a deluge of arrows, just like two thunderclouds.
