एवमुक्त्वा तु सौमित्रिं जातहर्षो विभीषणः ।
धनुष्पाणिनमादाय त्वरमाणो जगाम सः ॥१॥
1. evamuktvā tu saumitriṃ jātaharṣo vibhīṣaṇaḥ ,
dhanuṣpāṇinamādāya tvaramāṇo jagāma saḥ.

1. Vibhīṣaṇaḥ jātaharṣaḥ tu evam saumitrim uktvā,

1. Having thus spoken to Lakṣmaṇa (Saumitri), Vibhīṣaṇa, filled with joy, quickly took along the one who carried a bow in his hand (i.e., Lakṣmaṇa) and departed.
अविदूरं ततो गत्वा प्रविश्य च महद्वनम् ।
दर्शयामास तत् कर्म लक्ष्मणाय विभीषणः ॥२॥
2. avidūraṃ tato gatvā praviśya ca mahadvanam ,
darśayāmāsa tat karma lakṣmaṇāya vibhīṣaṇaḥ.
2. avidūram tataḥ gatvā praviśya ca mahat vanam
darśayāmāsa tat karma lakṣmaṇāya vibhīṣaṇaḥ
2. tataḥ avidūram gatvā,
ca mahat vanam praviśya,
Vibhīṣaṇaḥ tat karma lakṣmaṇāya darśayāmāsa.
2. Having gone not far from there, and having entered a great forest, Vibhīṣaṇa showed that particular sight (or place of action) to Lakṣmaṇa.
नीलजीमूतसंकाशं न्यग्रोधं भीमदर्शनम् ।
तेजस्वी रावणभ्राता लक्ष्मणाय न्यवेदयत् ॥३॥
3. nīlajīmūtasaṃkāśaṃ nyagrodhaṃ bhīmadarśanam ,
tejasvī rāvaṇabhrātā lakṣmaṇāya nyavedayat.
3. nīlajīmūtasaṃkāśam nyagrodham bhīmadarśanam
tejasvī rāvaṇabhrātā lakṣmaṇāya nyavedayat
3. tejasvī rāvaṇabhrātā lakṣmaṇāya nīlajīmūtasaṃkāśam bhīmadarśanam nyagrodham nyavedayat.
3. The glorious brother of Rāvaṇa (Vibhīṣaṇa) pointed out to Lakṣmaṇa a banyan tree that resembled a dark rain cloud and had a formidable appearance.
इहोपहारं भूतानां बलवान् रावणातजः ।
उपहृत्य ततः पश्चात् संग्राममभिवर्तते ॥४॥
4. ihopahāraṃ bhūtānāṃ balavān rāvaṇātajaḥ ,
upahṛtya tataḥ paścāt saṃgrāmamabhivartate.
4. iha upahāram bhūtānām balavān rāvaṇātajaḥ
upahṛtya tataḥ paścāt saṅgrāmam abhivartate
4. balavān rāvaṇātajaḥ iha bhūtānām upahāram

4. Here, after offering a tribute to the spirits (bhūtas), the mighty son of Ravana then proceeds to engage in battle.
अदृश्यः सर्वभूतानां ततो भवति राक्षसः ।
निहन्ति समरे शत्रून्बध्नाति च शरोत्तमैः ॥५॥
5. adṛśyaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ tato bhavati rākṣasaḥ ,
nihanti samare śatrūnbadhnāti ca śarottamaiḥ.
5. adṛśyaḥ sarvabhūtānām tataḥ bhavati rākṣasaḥ
nihanti samare śatrūn badhnāti ca śarottamaiḥ
5. tataḥ rākṣasaḥ sarvabhūtānām adṛśyaḥ bhavati

5. Then, the demon (rākṣasa) becomes invisible to all beings. He strikes down enemies in battle and binds them with his excellent arrows.
तमप्रविष्टं न्यग्रोधं बलिनं रावणात्मजम् ।
विध्वंसय शरैस्तीक्ष्णैः सरथं साश्वसारथिम् ॥६॥
6. tamapraviṣṭaṃ nyagrodhaṃ balinaṃ rāvaṇātmajam ,
vidhvaṃsaya śaraistīkṣṇaiḥ sarathaṃ sāśvasārathim.
6. tam apraviṣṭam nyagrodham balinam rāvaṇātmajam
vidhvaṃsaya śaraiḥ tīkṣṇaiḥ saratham sāśvasārathim
6. tīkṣṇaiḥ śaraiḥ saratham sāśvasārathim tam balinam
rāvaṇātmajam apraviṣṭam nyagrodham vidhvaṃsaya
6. Destroy that mighty son of Ravana, before he enters the nyagrodha (banyan tree, the site of his ritual), with your sharp arrows, along with his chariot, horses, and charioteer.
तथेत्युक्त्वा महातेजाः सौमित्रिर्मित्रनन्दनः ।
बभूवावस्थितस्तत्र चित्रं विस्फारयन्धनुः ॥७॥
7. tathetyuktvā mahātejāḥ saumitrirmitranandanaḥ ,
babhūvāvasthitastatra citraṃ visphārayandhanuḥ.
7. tathā iti uktvā mahātejāḥ saumitriḥ mitranandanaḥ
babhūva avasthitaḥ tatra citram visphārayan dhanuḥ

7. Having said, 'So be it!', the greatly glorious Lakshmana (Saumitri), who delights his friends, then stood there, skillfully drawing his bow.
स रथेनाग्निवर्णेन बलवान् रावणात्मजः ।
इन्द्रजित् कवची खड्गी सध्वजः प्रत्यदृश्यत ॥८॥
8. sa rathenāgnivarṇena balavān rāvaṇātmajaḥ ,
indrajit kavacī khaḍgī sadhvajaḥ pratyadṛśyata.
8. saḥ rathena agnivarnena balavān rāvaṇātmajaḥ
indrajit kavacī khaḍgī sadhvajaḥ pratyadṛśyata
8. saḥ rāvaṇātmajaḥ indrajit balavān kavacī khaḍgī

8. The powerful son of Rāvaṇa, Indrajit, appeared on a fire-colored chariot, armored, carrying a sword, and with his banner flying.
तमुवाच महातेजाः पौलस्त्यमपराजितम् ।
समाह्वये त्वां समरे सम्यग् युद्धं प्रयच्छ मे ॥९॥
9. tamuvāca mahātejāḥ paulastyamaparājitam ,
samāhvaye tvāṃ samare samyag yuddhaṃ prayaccha me.
9. tam uvāca mahātejāḥ paulastyam aparājitam
samāhvaye tvām samare samyak yuddham prayaccha me
9. mahātejāḥ aparājitam paulastyam tam uvāca aham
tvām samare samāhvaye me samyak yuddham prayaccha
9. The greatly effulgent (mahātejas) one said to him, the undefeated son of Pulastya (paulastya): "I challenge you in battle; give me a proper fight."
एवमुक्तो महातेजा मनस्वी रावणात्मजः ।
अब्रवीत् परुषं वाक्यं तत्र दृष्ट्वा विभीषणम् ॥१०॥
10. evamukto mahātejā manasvī rāvaṇātmajaḥ ,
abravīt paruṣaṃ vākyaṃ tatra dṛṣṭvā vibhīṣaṇam.
10. evam uktaḥ mahātejāḥ manasvī rāvaṇātmajaḥ
abravīt paruṣam vākyam tatra dṛṣṭvā vibhīṣaṇam
10. evam uktaḥ mahātejāḥ manasvī rāvaṇātmajaḥ
tatra vibhīṣaṇam dṛṣṭvā paruṣam vākyam abravīt
10. Thus addressed, the proud (manasvin) and greatly effulgent (mahātejas) son of Rāvaṇa, having seen Vibhīṣaṇa there, spoke harsh words.
इह त्वं जातसंवृद्धः साक्षाद्भ्राता पितुर्मम ।
कथं द्रुह्यसि पुत्रस्य पितृव्यो मम राक्षस ॥११॥
11. iha tvaṃ jātasaṃvṛddhaḥ sākṣādbhrātā piturmama ,
kathaṃ druhyasi putrasya pitṛvyo mama rākṣasa.
11. iha tvam jātasaṃvṛddhaḥ sākṣāt bhrātā pituḥ mama
katham druhasi putrasya pitṛvyaḥ mama rākṣasa
11. tvam iha jātasaṃvṛddhaḥ sākṣāt mama pituḥ bhrātā
mama pitṛvyaḥ putrasya katham druhasi rākṣasa
11. "Here you were born and grew up; you are directly my father's brother. How can you, my paternal uncle, betray his son, O demon (rākṣasa)?"
न ज्ञातित्वं न सौहार्दं न जातिस्तव दुर्मते ।
प्रमाणं न च सोदर्यं न धर्मो धर्मदूषण ॥१२॥
12. na jñātitvaṃ na sauhārdaṃ na jātistava durmate ,
pramāṇaṃ na ca sodaryaṃ na dharmo dharmadūṣaṇa.
12. na jñātitvam na sauhārdam na jātiḥ tava durmate
pramāṇam na ca sodaryam na dharmaḥ dharmadūṣaṇa
12. durmate tava jñātitvam na pramāṇam na sauhārdam
na jātiḥ na ca sodaryam dharmadūṣaṇa na dharmaḥ
12. O evil-minded one, neither kinship, friendship, lineage, nor brotherhood is a valid consideration for you. O defiler of (natural law) dharma, even (natural law) dharma itself holds no authority for you.
शोच्यस्त्वमसि दुर्बुद्धे निन्दनीयश्च साधुभिः ।
यस्त्वं स्वजनमुत्सृज्य परभृत्यत्वमागतः ॥१३॥
13. śocyastvamasi durbuddhe nindanīyaśca sādhubhiḥ ,
yastvaṃ svajanamutsṛjya parabhṛtyatvamāgataḥ.
13. śocyaḥ tvam asi durbuddhe nindanīyaḥ ca sādhubhiḥ
yaḥ tvam svajanam utsṛjya parabhṛtyatvam āgataḥ
13. durbuddhe tvam śocyaḥ asi ca sādhubhiḥ nindanīyaḥ
yaḥ tvam svajanam utsṛjya parabhṛtyatvam āgataḥ
13. O foolish one, you are pitiable and censurable by good people, you who have abandoned your own kin and resorted to serving others.
नैतच्छिथिलया बुद्ध्या त्वं वेत्सि महदन्तरम् ।
क्व च स्वजनसंवासः क्व च नीचपराश्रयः ॥१४॥
14. naitacchithilayā buddhyā tvaṃ vetsi mahadantaram ,
kva ca svajanasaṃvāsaḥ kva ca nīcaparāśrayaḥ.
14. na etat śithilayā buddhyā tvam vetsi mahat antaram
kva ca svajanasaṃvāsaḥ kva ca nīcaparāśrayaḥ
14. śithilayā buddhyā tvam etat mahat antaram na
vetsi kva ca svajanasaṃvāsaḥ kva ca nīcaparāśrayaḥ
14. With such a weak intellect, you do not understand this great difference: where is dwelling among one's own kin, and where is dependence upon base individuals?
गुणवान् वा परजनः स्वजनो निर्गुणो ऽपि वा ।
निर्गुणः स्वजनः श्रेयान्यः परः पर एव सः ॥१५॥
15. guṇavān vā parajanaḥ svajano nirguṇo'pi vā ,
nirguṇaḥ svajanaḥ śreyānyaḥ paraḥ para eva saḥ.
15. guṇavān vā parajanaḥ svajanaḥ nirguṇaḥ api vā
nirguṇaḥ svajanaḥ śreyān yaḥ paraḥ paraḥ eva saḥ
15. parajanaḥ guṇavān vā svajanaḥ nirguṇaḥ api vā
nirguṇaḥ svajanaḥ śreyān yaḥ paraḥ saḥ paraḥ eva
15. Whether another person is virtuous, or one's own kin is even devoid of virtues, one's own kin, even if devoid of virtues, is superior. For he who is an outsider is truly just an outsider.
निरनुक्रोशता चेयं यादृशी ते निशाचर ।
स्वजनेन त्वया शक्यं परुषं रावणानुज ॥१६॥
16. niranukrośatā ceyaṃ yādṛśī te niśācara ,
svajanena tvayā śakyaṃ paruṣaṃ rāvaṇānuja.
16. nirānukrośatā ca iyam yādṛśī te niśācara |
svajanena tvayā śakyam paruṣam rāvaṇānuja
16. niśācara rāvaṇānuja te iyam yādṛśī ca
nirānukrośatā svajanena tvayā paruṣam śakyam
16. O night-roamer, and what kind of pitilessness is this of yours? O younger brother of Rāvaṇa, it is indeed possible for you to speak harshly to your own kin.
इत्युक्तो भ्रातृपुत्रेण प्रत्युवाच विभीषणः ।
अजानन्निव मच्छीलं किं राक्षस विकत्थसे ॥१७॥
17. ityukto bhrātṛputreṇa pratyuvāca vibhīṣaṇaḥ ,
ajānanniva macchīlaṃ kiṃ rākṣasa vikatthase.
17. iti uktaḥ bhrātṛputreṇa prati uvāca vibhīṣaṇaḥ
| ajānan iva mat śīlam kim rākṣasa vikatthase
17. bhrātṛputreṇa iti uktaḥ vibhīṣaṇaḥ prati uvāca
rākṣasa mat śīlam ajānan iva kim vikatthase
17. Thus addressed by his brother's son, Vibhīṣaṇa replied: 'O demon, why do you boast as if you do not know my true nature?'
राक्षसेन्द्रसुतासाधो पारुष्यं त्यज गौरवात् ।
कुले यद्यप्यहं जातो रक्षसां क्रूरकर्मणाम् ।
गुणो ऽयं प्रथमो नॄणां तन्मे शीलमराक्षसं ॥१८॥
18. rākṣasendrasutāsādho pāruṣyaṃ tyaja gauravāt ,
kule yadyapyahaṃ jāto rakṣasāṃ krūrakarmaṇām ,
guṇo'yaṃ prathamo nṝṇāṃ tanme śīlamarākṣasaṃ.
18. rākṣasendra sutā asādho pāruṣyam tyaja
gauravāt | kule yadi api aham jātaḥ
rakṣasām krūrakarmaṇām | guṇaḥ ayam
prathamaḥ nṛṇām tat me śīlam arākṣasam
18. rākṣasendrasuta asādho gauravāt pāruṣyam
tyaja yadi api aham krūrakarmaṇām
rakṣasām kule jātaḥ ayam nṛṇām
prathamaḥ guṇaḥ tat me śīlam arākṣasam
18. O ignoble son of the lord of the *rakṣasas*, abandon harshness out of respect. Even though I was born into the family of cruel-acting *rakṣasas*, this quality is the foremost among humans (nṛṇām). Therefore, my character (śīlam) is not demonic.
न रमे दारुणेनाहं न चाधर्मेण वै रमे ।
भ्रात्रा विषमशीलेन कथं भ्राता निरस्यते ॥१९॥
19. na rame dāruṇenāhaṃ na cādharmeṇa vai rame ,
bhrātrā viṣamaśīlena kathaṃ bhrātā nirasyate.
19. na rame dāruṇena aham na ca adharmeṇa vai rame
| bhrātrā viṣamaśīlena katham bhrātā nirasyate
19. aham dāruṇena na rame ca adharmeṇa vai na rame
viṣamaśīlena bhrātrā katham bhrātā nirasyate
19. I do not delight in cruelty, nor indeed do I delight in unrighteousness (adharma). How can a brother be cast out by a brother who has a perverse nature?
परस्वानां च हरणं परदाराभिमर्शनम् ।
सुहृदामतिशङ्कां च त्रयो दोषाः क्षयावहाः ॥२०॥
20. parasvānāṃ ca haraṇaṃ paradārābhimarśanam ,
suhṛdāmatiśaṅkāṃ ca trayo doṣāḥ kṣayāvahāḥ.
20. parasvānām ca haraṇam paradārābhimarśanam
suhṛdām atiśaṅkām ca trayaḥ doṣāḥ kṣayāvahāḥ
20. parasvānām haraṇam ca paradārābhimarśanam ca
suhṛdām atiśaṅkām ca trayaḥ doṣāḥ kṣayāvahāḥ
20. Stealing others' property, molesting others' wives, and excessive suspicion of friends - these three faults lead to ruin.
महर्षीणां वधो घोरः सर्वदेवैश्च विग्रहः ।
अभिमानश्च कोपश्च वैरित्वं प्रतिकूलता ॥२१॥
21. maharṣīṇāṃ vadho ghoraḥ sarvadevaiśca vigrahaḥ ,
abhimānaśca kopaśca vairitvaṃ pratikūlatā.
21. maharṣīṇām vadhaḥ ghoraḥ sarvadevaiḥ ca vigrahaḥ
abhimānaḥ ca kopaḥ ca vairitvam pratikūlatā
21. maharṣīṇām ghoraḥ vadhaḥ ca sarvadevaiḥ vigrahaḥ
abhimānaḥ ca kopaḥ ca vairitvam pratikūlatā
21. The terrible slaughter of great sages, conflict with all the gods, as well as ego (abhimāna), anger, enmity, and hostility (pratikūlatā) (are also faults).
एते दोषा मम भ्रातुर्जीवितैश्वर्यनाशनाः ।
गुणान्प्रच्छादयामासुः पर्वतानिव तोयदाः ॥२२॥
22. ete doṣā mama bhrāturjīvitaiśvaryanāśanāḥ ,
guṇānpracchādayāmāsuḥ parvatāniva toyadāḥ.
22. ete doṣāḥ mama bhrātuḥ jīvitaiśvaryanāśanāḥ
guṇān pracchādayāmāsuḥ parvatān iva toyadāḥ
22. ete doṣāḥ mama bhrātuḥ jīvitaiśvaryanāśanāḥ
guṇān pracchādayāmāsuḥ toyadāḥ parvatān iva
22. These faults, which destroy my brother's life and sovereignty, obscured his virtues, just as clouds cover mountains.
दोषैरेतैः परित्यक्तो मया भ्राता पिता तव ।
नेयमस्ति पुरी लङ्का न च त्वं न च ते पिता ॥२३॥
23. doṣairetaiḥ parityakto mayā bhrātā pitā tava ,
neyamasti purī laṅkā na ca tvaṃ na ca te pitā.
23. doṣaiḥ etaiḥ parityaktaḥ mayā bhrātā pitā tava
na iyam asti purī laṅkā na ca tvam na ca te pitā
23. etaiḥ doṣaiḥ tava bhrātā pitā (ca) mayā parityaktaḥ.
iyam laṅkā purī na asti.
tvam ca na.
te pitā ca na.
23. Because of these faults, your brother and your father were forsaken by me. This city of Laṅkā is no longer yours, nor do you (have any claim to it), nor does your father.
अतिमानी च बालश्च दुर्विनीतश्च राक्षस ।
बद्धस्त्वं कालपाशेन ब्रूहि मां यद् यदिच्छसि ॥२४॥
24. atimānī ca bālaśca durvinītaśca rākṣasa ,
baddhastvaṃ kālapāśena brūhi māṃ yad yadicchasi.
24. atimānī ca bālaḥ ca durvinītaḥ ca rākṣasa
baddhaḥ tvam kālapāśena brūhi mām yat yat icchasi
24. rākṣasa tvam atimānī ca bālaḥ ca durvinītaḥ ca
kālapāśena baddhaḥ mām yat yat icchasi brūhi
24. O demon, you are excessively proud, childish, and ill-mannered. You are bound by the noose of time (kāla). Tell me whatever you wish.
अद्य ते व्यसनं प्राप्तं किमिह त्वं तु वक्ष्यसि ।
प्रवेष्टुं न त्वया शक्यो न्यग्रोधो राक्षसाधम ॥२५॥
25. adya te vyasanaṃ prāptaṃ kimiha tvaṃ tu vakṣyasi ,
praveṣṭuṃ na tvayā śakyo nyagrodho rākṣasādhama.
25. adya te vyasanam prāptam kim iha tvam tu vakṣyasi
praveṣṭum na tvayā śakyaḥ nyagrodhaḥ rākṣasādhama
25. adya te vyasanam prāptam tvam tu iha kim vakṣyasi
rākṣasādhama tvayā nyagrodhaḥ praveṣṭum na śakyaḥ
25. Today, misfortune has befallen you. What will you say in this situation? O vilest of demons, you are not capable of entering this banyan tree.
धर्षयित्वा तु काकुत्स्थौ न शक्यं जीवितुं त्वया ।
युध्यस्व नरदेवेन लक्ष्मणेन रणे सह ।
हतस्त्वं देवता कार्यं करिष्यसि यमक्षये ॥२६॥
26. dharṣayitvā tu kākutsthau na śakyaṃ jīvituṃ tvayā ,
yudhyasva naradevena lakṣmaṇena raṇe saha ,
hatastvaṃ devatā kāryaṃ kariṣyasi yamakṣaye.
26. dharṣayitvā tu kākutsthau na śakyam
jīvitum tvayā yudhyasva naradevena
lakṣmaṇena raṇe saha hataḥ tvam
devatā kāryam kariṣyasi yamakṣaye
26. tu kākutsthau dharṣayitvā tvayā
jīvitum na śakyam raṇe naradevena
lakṣmaṇena saha yudhyasva tvam hataḥ
yamakṣaye devatā kāryam kariṣyasi
26. Indeed, having assaulted the two Kakutsthas, you will not be able to survive. Fight in battle with Lakshmana, the prince. Once you are slain, you will perform a service for the deities (devatā) in Yama's (kṣaya) abode.
निदर्शयस्वात्मबलं समुद्यतं कुरुष्व सर्वायुधसायकव्ययम् ।
न लक्ष्मणस्यैत्य हि बाणगोचरं त्वमद्य जीवन् सबलो गमिष्यसि ॥२७॥
27. nidarśayasvātmabalaṃ samudyataṃ kuruṣva sarvāyudhasāyakavyayam ,
na lakṣmaṇasyaitya hi bāṇagocaraṃ tvamadya jīvan sabalo gamiṣyasi.
27. nidarśayasva ātmabalam samudyatam
kuruṣva sarvāyudhasāyakavyayam na
lakṣmaṇasya etya hi bāṇagocaram
tvam adya jīvan sabalaḥ gamiṣyasi
27. tvam samudyatam ātmabalam nidarśayasva
sarvāyudhasāyakavyayam kuruṣva
hi adya tvam jīvan sabalaḥ
lakṣmaṇasya bāṇagocaram na etya gamiṣyasi
27. Display your fully exerted inner strength (ātman). Exhaust all your weapons and arrows! For today, you, alive and with your forces, will not escape the range of Lakshmana's arrows.
