अयमाख्याति मे राम सचिवो मन्त्रिसत्तमः ।
हनुमान्यन्निमित्तं त्वं निर्जनं वनमागतः ॥१॥
1. ayamākhyāti me rāma sacivo mantrisattamaḥ ,

रक्षसापहृता भार्या मैथिली जनकात्मजा ॥२॥
2. lakṣmaṇena saha bhrātrā vasataśca vane tava ,
rakṣasāpahṛtā bhāryā maithilī janakātmajā.

rakṣasā apahṛtā bhāryā maithilī janakātmajā

2. And while you were residing in the forest with your brother Lakshmana, your wife Maithili, the daughter of Janaka, was abducted by a demon.
त्वया वियुक्ता रुदती लक्ष्मणेन च धीमता ।
अन्तरं प्रेप्सुना तेन हत्वा गृध्रं जटायुषम् ॥३॥
3. tvayā viyuktā rudatī lakṣmaṇena ca dhīmatā ,
antaraṃ prepsunā tena hatvā gṛdhraṃ jaṭāyuṣam.
3. tvayā viyuktā rudatī lakṣmaṇena ca dhīmatā
antaram prepsunā tena hatvā gṛdhram jaṭāyuṣam

3. Separated from you and the intelligent Lakshmana, and weeping, she was taken by that (demon) who, seeking an opportune moment, had killed the vulture Jatayu.
भार्यावियोगजं दुःखं नचिरात्त्वं विमोक्ष्यसे ।
अहं तामानयिष्यामि नष्टां वेदश्रुतिं यथा ॥४॥
4. bhāryāviyogajaṃ duḥkhaṃ nacirāttvaṃ vimokṣyase ,
ahaṃ tāmānayiṣyāmi naṣṭāṃ vedaśrutiṃ yathā.
4. bhāryāviyogajam duḥkham nacirāt tvam vimokṣyase
aham tām ānayiṣyāmi naṣṭām vedaśrutim yathā
4. tvam bhāryāviyogajam duḥkham nacirāt vimokṣyase
aham naṣṭām vedaśrutim yathā tām ānayiṣyāmi
4. You will soon be freed from the grief caused by the separation from your wife. I will bring her back, just as lost Vedic knowledge (śruti) is recovered.
रसातले वा वर्तन्तीं वर्तन्तीं वा नभस्तले ।
अहमानीय दास्यामि तव भार्यामरिंदम ॥५॥
5. rasātale vā vartantīṃ vartantīṃ vā nabhastale ,
ahamānīya dāsyāmi tava bhāryāmariṃdama.
5. rasātale vā vartantīm vartantīm vā nabhastale
aham ānīya dāsyāmi tava bhāryām arimdam
5. arimdam vā rasātale vartantīm vā nabhastale
vartantīm aham tava bhāryām ānīya dāsyāmi
5. Whether she is residing in the underworld (rasātala) or in the sky (nabhastala), I will bring your wife to you and give her back, O vanquisher of foes (arimdama)!
इदं तथ्यं मम वचस्त्वमवेहि च राघव ।
त्यज शोकं महाबाहो तां कान्तामानयामि ते ॥६॥
6. idaṃ tathyaṃ mama vacastvamavehi ca rāghava ,
tyaja śokaṃ mahābāho tāṃ kāntāmānayāmi te.
6. idam tathyām mama vacaḥ tvam avehi ca rāghava
tyaja śokam mahābāho tām kāntām ānayāmi te
6. rāghava mahābāho ca tvam idam mama vacaḥ tathyām
avehi śokam tyaja aham te tām kāntām ānayāmi
6. O Rāghava, and O mighty-armed one (mahābāhu), know this word of mine to be true. Abandon your sorrow; I will bring back that beloved one for you.
अनुमानात्तु जानामि मैथिली सा न संशयः ।
ह्रियमाणा मया दृष्टा रक्षसा क्रूरकर्मणा ॥७॥
7. anumānāttu jānāmi maithilī sā na saṃśayaḥ ,
hriyamāṇā mayā dṛṣṭā rakṣasā krūrakarmaṇā.
7. anumānāt tu jānāmi maithilī sā na saṃśayaḥ
hriyamāṇā mayā dṛṣṭā rakṣasā krūrakarmaṇā
7. tu aham anumānāt jānāmi sā maithilī na saṃśayaḥ
hriyamāṇā krūrakarmaṇā rakṣasā mayā dṛṣṭā
7. Indeed, I know by inference (anumāna) that she is Maithilī; there is no doubt. I saw her being carried away by a demon (rakṣas) of cruel deeds.
क्रोशन्ती राम रामेति लक्ष्मणेति च विस्वरम् ।
स्फुरन्ती रावणस्याङ्के पन्नगेन्द्रवधूर्यथा ॥८॥
8. krośantī rāma rāmeti lakṣmaṇeti ca visvaram ,
sphurantī rāvaṇasyāṅke pannagendravadhūryathā.
8. krośantī rāma rāma iti lakṣmaṇa iti ca visvaram
sphurantī rāvaṇasya aṅke pannagendravadhūḥ yathā
8. visvaram rāma rāma iti ca lakṣmaṇa iti krośantī
rāvaṇasya aṅke pannagendravadhūḥ yathā sphurantī
8. Crying out "Rama, Rama" and "Lakshmana" in a distressed voice, she was trembling in Ravana's lap, just like the wife of the king of serpents.
आत्मना पञ्चमं मां हि दृष्ट्वा शैलतटे स्थितम् ।
उत्तरीयं तया त्यक्तं शुभान्याभरणानि च ॥९॥
9. ātmanā pañcamaṃ māṃ hi dṛṣṭvā śailataṭe sthitam ,
uttarīyaṃ tayā tyaktaṃ śubhānyābharaṇāni ca.
9. ātmanā pañcamam mām hi dṛṣṭvā śailataṭe sthitam
uttarīyam tayā tyaktam śubhāni ābharaṇāni ca
9. hi śailataṭe ātmanā pañcamam mām sthitam dṛṣṭvā
tayā uttarīyam ca śubhāni ābharaṇāni tyaktam
9. Indeed, having seen me as the fifth (person) standing on the mountain slope, she threw down her upper garment and auspicious ornaments.
तान्यस्माभिर्गृहीतानि निहितानि च राघव ।
आनयिष्याम्यहं तानि प्रत्यभिज्ञातुमर्हसि ॥१०॥
10. tānyasmābhirgṛhītāni nihitāni ca rāghava ,
ānayiṣyāmyahaṃ tāni pratyabhijñātumarhasi.
10. tāni asmābhiḥ gṛhītāni nihitāni ca rāghava
ānayiṣyāmi aham tāni pratyabhijñātum arhasi
10. rāghava,
tāni asmābhiḥ gṛhītāni ca nihitāni.
aham tāni ānayiṣyāmi,
pratyabhijñātum arhasi
10. O Rāghava, those (items) were taken by us and placed (in safekeeping). I will bring them, and you ought to recognize them.
तमब्रवीत्ततो रामः सुग्रीवं प्रियवादिनम् ।
आनयस्व सखे शीघ्रं किमर्थं प्रविलम्बसे ॥११॥
11. tamabravīttato rāmaḥ sugrīvaṃ priyavādinam ,
ānayasva sakhe śīghraṃ kimarthaṃ pravilambase.
11. tam abravīt tataḥ rāmaḥ sugrīvam priyavādinam
ānayasva sakhe śīghram kimartham pravilambase
11. tataḥ rāmaḥ tam priyavādinam sugrīvam abravīt: "sakhe,
śīghram ānayasva! kimartham pravilambase?"
11. Then Rāma spoke to him, to the kindly-speaking Sugrīva: "O friend, bring them quickly! Why are you delaying?"
एवमुक्तस्तु सुग्रीवः शैलस्य गहनां गुहाम् ।
प्रविवेश ततः शीघ्रं राघवप्रियकाम्यया ॥१२॥
12. evamuktastu sugrīvaḥ śailasya gahanāṃ guhām ,
praviveśa tataḥ śīghraṃ rāghavapriyakāmyayā.
12. evam uktaḥ tu sugrīvaḥ śailasya gahanām guhām
praviveśa tataḥ śīghram rāghavapriyakāmyayā
12. evam uktaḥ tu sugrīvaḥ tataḥ rāghavapriyakāmyayā
śailasya gahanām guhām śīghram praviveśa
12. Thus addressed, Sugriva then quickly entered the deep cave of the mountain, motivated by the desire to please Rama.
उत्तरीयं गृहीत्वा तु शुभान्याभरणानि च ।
इदं पश्येति रामाय दर्शयामास वानरः ॥१३॥
13. uttarīyaṃ gṛhītvā tu śubhānyābharaṇāni ca ,
idaṃ paśyeti rāmāya darśayāmāsa vānaraḥ.
13. uttarīyam gṛhītvā tu śubhāni ābharaṇāni ca
idam paśya iti rāmāya darśayāmāsa vānaraḥ
13. tu vānaraḥ uttarīyam ca śubhāni ābharaṇāni
gṛhītvā idam paśya iti rāmāya darśayāmāsa
13. The monkey (Sugriva), having taken an upper garment and beautiful ornaments, then showed them to Rama, saying, "See these!"
ततो गृहीत्वा तद्वासः शुभान्याभरणानि च ।
अभवद्बाष्पसंरुद्धो नीहारेणेव चन्द्रमाः ॥१४॥
14. tato gṛhītvā tadvāsaḥ śubhānyābharaṇāni ca ,
abhavadbāṣpasaṃruddho nīhāreṇeva candramāḥ.
14. tataḥ gṛhītvā tat vāsaḥ śubhāni ābharaṇāni ca
abhavat bāṣpasaṃruddhaḥ nīhāreṇa iva candramāḥ
14. tataḥ tat vāsaḥ ca śubhāni ābharaṇāni gṛhītvā saḥ bāṣpasaṃruddhaḥ abhavat,
nīhāreṇa iva candramāḥ
14. Then, having taken that garment and beautiful ornaments, he became choked with tears, just like the moon is obscured by mist.
सीतास्नेहप्रवृत्तेन स तु बाष्पेण दूषितः ।
हा प्रियेति रुदन्धैर्यमुत्सृज्य न्यपतत् क्षितौ ॥१५॥
15. sītāsnehapravṛttena sa tu bāṣpeṇa dūṣitaḥ ,
hā priyeti rudandhairyamutsṛjya nyapatat kṣitau.
15. sītāsnehapravṛttena saḥ tu bāṣpeṇa dūṣitaḥ hā
priye iti rudan dhairyam utsṛjya nyapatat kṣitau
15. saḥ tu sītāsnehapravṛttena bāṣpeṇa dūṣitaḥ,
hā priye iti rudan,
dhairyam utsṛjya,
kṣitau nyapatat
15. Overwhelmed by tears stemming from his affection for Sita, he cried out, "Alas, my beloved!" and abandoning all courage, collapsed onto the ground.
हृदि कृत्वा स बहुशस्तमलंकारमुत्तमम् ।
निशश्वास भृशं सर्पो बिलस्थ इव रोषितः ॥१६॥
16. hṛdi kṛtvā sa bahuśastamalaṃkāramuttamam ,
niśaśvāsa bhṛśaṃ sarpo bilastha iva roṣitaḥ.
16. hṛdi kṛtvā sa bahuśaḥ tam alaṅkāram uttamam
niśaśvāsa bhṛśam sarpaḥ bilasthaḥ iva roṣitaḥ
16. saḥ hṛdi bahuśaḥ tam uttamam alaṅkāram kṛtvā
bilasthaḥ roṣitaḥ sarpaḥ iva bhṛśam niśaśvāsa
16. Repeatedly reflecting upon that most excellent ornament in his heart, he sighed deeply, like an enraged snake within its hole.
अविच्छिन्नाश्रुवेगस्तु सौमित्रिं वीक्ष्य पार्श्वतः ।
परिदेवयितुं दीनं रामः समुपचक्रमे ॥१७॥
17. avicchinnāśruvegastu saumitriṃ vīkṣya pārśvataḥ ,
paridevayituṃ dīnaṃ rāmaḥ samupacakrame.
17. avicchinnāśruvegaḥ tu saumitrim vīkṣya pārśvataḥ
paridevayitum dīnam rāmaḥ samupacakrame
17. avicchinnāśruvegaḥ tu rāmaḥ pārśvataḥ saumitrim
vīkṣya dīnam paridevayitum samupacakrame
17. Indeed, with an uninterrupted flow of tears, seeing Saumitri (Lakshmana) by his side, Rama, deeply distressed, began to lament.
पश्य लक्ष्मण वैदेह्या संत्यक्तं ह्रियमाणया ।
उत्तरीयमिदं भूमौ शरीराद्भूषणानि च ॥१८॥
18. paśya lakṣmaṇa vaidehyā saṃtyaktaṃ hriyamāṇayā ,
uttarīyamidaṃ bhūmau śarīrādbhūṣaṇāni ca.
18. paśya lakṣmaṇa vaidehyā saṃtyaktam hriyamāṇayā
uttariyam idam bhūmau śarīrāt bhūṣaṇāni ca
18. lakṣmaṇa paśya! hriyamāṇayā vaidehyā śarīrāt
saṃtyaktam idam uttariyam ca bhūṣaṇāni bhūmau (santi)
18. Look, Lakshmana! This upper garment and these ornaments were cast off on the ground by Vaidehi (Sita) from her body as she was being carried away.
शाद्वलिन्यां ध्रुवं भूम्यां सीतया ह्रियमाणया ।
उत्सृष्टं भूषणमिदं तथारूपं हि दृश्यते ॥१९॥
19. śādvalinyāṃ dhruvaṃ bhūmyāṃ sītayā hriyamāṇayā ,
utsṛṣṭaṃ bhūṣaṇamidaṃ tathārūpaṃ hi dṛśyate.
19. śādvalinyām dhruvam bhūmyām sītayā hriyamāṇayā
utsṛṣṭam bhūṣaṇam idam tathārūpam hi dṛśyate
19. hriyamāṇayā sītayā dhruvam śādvalinyām bhūmyām
idam bhūṣaṇam utsṛṣṭam hi tathārūpam dṛśyate
19. Indeed, this ornament was certainly discarded by Sita, as she was being carried away, onto this grassy ground; it truly appears to be of that specific form.
ब्रूहि सुग्रीव कं देशं ह्रियन्ती लक्षिता त्वया ।
रक्षसा रौद्ररूपेण मम प्राणसमा प्रिया ॥२०॥
20. brūhi sugrīva kaṃ deśaṃ hriyantī lakṣitā tvayā ,
rakṣasā raudrarūpeṇa mama prāṇasamā priyā.
20. brūhi sugrīva kam deśam hriyantī lakṣitā tvayā
rakṣasā raudrarūpeṇa mama prāṇasamā priyā
20. sugrīva tvayā raudrarūpeṇa rakṣasā hriyantī
mama prāṇasamā priyā kam deśam lakṣitā brūhi
20. Tell me, Sugrīva, in which land was my beloved, dear as my very life (prāṇasamā), seen by you while she was being carried away by a demon (rakṣas) of terrifying form?
क्व वा वसति तद् रक्षो महद्व्यसनदं मम ।
यन्निमित्तमहं सर्वान्नाशयिष्यामि राक्षसान् ॥२१॥
21. kva vā vasati tad rakṣo mahadvyasanadaṃ mama ,
yannimittamahaṃ sarvānnāśayiṣyāmi rākṣasān.
21. kva vā vasati tat rakṣaḥ mahat vyasanadam mama
yat nimittam aham sarvān nāśayiṣyāmi rākṣasān
21. vā tat mahat mama vyasanadam rakṣaḥ kva vasati
yat nimittam aham sarvān rākṣasān nāśayiṣyāmi
21. Or where does that demon (rakṣas) dwell, who brought such great misfortune upon me? It is for his sake that I shall destroy all the rākṣasas.
हरता मैथिलीं येन मां च रोषयता भृशम् ।
आत्मनो जीवितान्ताय मृत्युद्वारमपावृतम् ॥२२॥
22. haratā maithilīṃ yena māṃ ca roṣayatā bhṛśam ,
ātmano jīvitāntāya mṛtyudvāramapāvṛtam.
22. haratā maithilīm yena mām ca roṣayatā bhṛśam
ātmanaḥ jīvitāntāya mṛtyudvāram apāvṛtam
22. yena maithilīm haratā ca mām bhṛśam roṣayatā
ātmanaḥ jīvitāntāya mṛtyudvāram apāvṛtam
22. By that one, who abducted Maithilī and greatly angered me, the door to his own end of life (ātman-o jīvitānta) has been opened.
मम दयिततमा हृता वनाद् रजनिचरेण विमथ्य येन सा ।
कथय मम रिपुं तमद्य वै प्रवगपते यमसंनिधिं नयामि ॥२३॥
23. mama dayitatamā hṛtā vanād rajanicareṇa vimathya yena sā ,
kathaya mama ripuṃ tamadya vai pravagapate yamasaṃnidhiṃ nayāmi.
23. mama dayitatamā hṛtā vanāt
rajanicareṇa vimathya yena sā
kathaya mama ripum tam adya vai
plavagapate yamasamnidhim nayāmi
23. plavagapate kathaya yena mama dayitatamā sā vanāt vimathya

23. O lord of monkeys (plavagapati), tell me by whom my most beloved was forcibly carried away from the forest. Indeed, today I shall send that enemy of mine to the abode of Yama (Yama-saṃnidhi).
