अथोवाच पुनर्वाक्यं विराधः पूरयन् वनम् ।
आत्मानं पृच्छते ब्रूतं कौ युवां क्व गमिष्यथः ॥१॥
1. athovāca punarvākyaṃ virādhaḥ pūrayan vanam ,
ātmānaṃ pṛcchate brūtaṃ kau yuvāṃ kva gamiṣyathaḥ.

1. Then Viradha, filling the forest (with his roar), spoke again, saying, "Tell me about yourselves (ātman): who are you two, and where are you going?"
तमुवाच ततो रामो राक्षसं ज्वलिताननम् ।
पृच्छन्तं सुमहातेजा इक्ष्वाकुकुलमात्मनः ॥२॥
2. tamuvāca tato rāmo rākṣasaṃ jvalitānanam ,
pṛcchantaṃ sumahātejā ikṣvākukulamātmanaḥ.
2. tam uvāca tataḥ rāmaḥ rākṣasam jvalitānanam
pṛcchantam sumahātejāḥ ikṣvākukulam ātmanaḥ
2. Then the exceedingly glorious Rama spoke to that demon with the blazing face, who was asking about his (Rama's) own (ātman) Ikshvaku lineage.
क्षत्रियो वृत्तसंपन्नौ विद्धि नौ वनगोचरौ ।
त्वां तु वेदितुमिच्छावः कस्त्वं चरसि दण्डकान् ॥३॥
3. kṣatriyo vṛttasaṃpannau viddhi nau vanagocarau ,
tvāṃ tu veditumicchāvaḥ kastvaṃ carasi daṇḍakān.
3. kṣatriyau vṛttasampannau viddhi nau vanagocarau
tvām tu veditum icchāvaḥ kaḥ tvam carasi daṇḍakān
3. Know us as two kshatriyas (kṣatriyau) endowed with excellent conduct, who wander the forest. But we wish to know you: who are you that roams the Dandaka forest?
तमुवाच विराधस्तु रामं सत्यपराक्रमम् ।
हन्त वक्ष्यामि ते राजन्निबोध मम राघव ॥४॥
4. tamuvāca virādhastu rāmaṃ satyaparākramam ,
hanta vakṣyāmi te rājannibodha mama rāghava.
4. tam uvāca virādhaḥ tu rāmam satyaparākramam
hanta vakṣyāmi te rājan nibodha mama rāghava
4. Then Viradha spoke to Rama, who possessed true valor: "Well then, O King, I will tell you. O Raghava, listen to me."
पुत्रः किल जयस्याहं माता मम शतह्रदा ।
विराध इति मामाहुः पृथिव्यां सर्वराक्षसाः ॥५॥
5. putraḥ kila jayasyāhaṃ mātā mama śatahradā ,
virādha iti māmāhuḥ pṛthivyāṃ sarvarākṣasāḥ.
5. putraḥ kila jayasya aham mātā mama śatahṛdā |
virādhaḥ iti mām āhuḥ pṛthivyām sarvarākṣasāḥ
5. aham jayasya putraḥ kila mama mātā śatahṛdā
pṛthivyām sarvarākṣasāḥ mām virādhaḥ iti āhuḥ
5. I am indeed the son of Jaya, and my mother is Śatahṛdā. All the Rākṣasas on earth call me Virādha.
तपसा चापि मे प्राप्ता ब्रह्मणो हि प्रसादजा ।
शस्त्रेणावध्यता लोके ऽच्छेद्याभेद्यत्वमेव च ॥६॥
6. tapasā cāpi me prāptā brahmaṇo hi prasādajā ,
śastreṇāvadhyatā loke'cchedyābhedyatvameva ca.
6. tapasā ca api me prāptā brahmaṇaḥ hi prasādajā |
śastreṇa avadhyatā loke acchedyābhedyatvam eva ca
6. me tapasā ca api hi brahmaṇaḥ prasādajā avadhyatā
acchedyābhedyatvam ca eva loke śastreṇa prāptā
6. Indeed, by my asceticism (tapas) and born of the grace of Brahmā, I have obtained invulnerability in the world from weapons, as well as the state of being un-cuttable and un-pierceable.
उत्सृज्य प्रमदामेनामनपेक्षौ यथागतम् ।
त्वरमाणौ पालयेथां न वां जीवितमाददे ॥७॥
7. utsṛjya pramadāmenāmanapekṣau yathāgatam ,
tvaramāṇau pālayethāṃ na vāṃ jīvitamādade.
7. utsṛjya pramadām enām anapekṣau yathāgatam
| tvaramāṇau pālayethām na vām jīvitam ādade
7. enām pramadām utsṛjya anapekṣau yathāgatam

7. Abandoning this woman, without looking back, you two should quickly protect yourselves, just as you came. I will not take your lives.
तं रामः प्रत्युवाचेदं कोपसंरक्तलोचनः ।
राक्षसं विकृताकारं विराधं पापचेतसं ॥८॥
8. taṃ rāmaḥ pratyuvācedaṃ kopasaṃraktalocanaḥ ,
rākṣasaṃ vikṛtākāraṃ virādhaṃ pāpacetasaṃ.
8. tam rāmaḥ prati uvāca idam kopa saṃrakta locanaḥ
| rākṣasam vikṛta ākāram virādham pāpa cetasam
8. rāmaḥ kopa saṃrakta locanaḥ tam vikṛta ākāram
pāpa cetasam rākṣasam virādham idam prati uvāca
8. To him, Rāma, whose eyes were red with anger, replied thus to the demon (Rākṣasa) Virādha, who had a distorted form and a sinful mind.
क्षुद्र धिक् त्वां तु हीनार्थं मृत्युमन्वेषसे ध्रुवम् ।
रणे संप्राप्स्यसे तिष्ठ न मे जीवन् गमिष्यसि ॥९॥
9. kṣudra dhik tvāṃ tu hīnārthaṃ mṛtyumanveṣase dhruvam ,
raṇe saṃprāpsyase tiṣṭha na me jīvan gamiṣyasi.
9. kṣudra dhik tvām tu hīnārtham mṛtyum anveṣase dhruvam
raṇe samprāpsyase tiṣṭha na me jīvan gamiṣyasi
9. kṣudra dhik tvām hīnārtham mṛtyum dhruvam anveṣase

9. O base wretch! Fie on you for certainly seeking death with such a contemptible purpose. You will meet death in battle. Stop! You will not escape from me alive.
ततः सज्यं धनुः कृत्वा रामः सुनिशिताञ् शरान् ।
सुशीघ्रमभिसंधाय राक्षसं निजघान ह ॥१०॥
10. tataḥ sajyaṃ dhanuḥ kṛtvā rāmaḥ suniśitāñ śarān ,
suśīghramabhisaṃdhāya rākṣasaṃ nijaghāna ha.
10. tataḥ sajyam dhanuḥ kṛtvā rāmaḥ suniśitān śarān
suśīghram abhisandhāya rākṣasam nijaghāna ha
10. tataḥ rāmaḥ sajyam dhanuḥ kṛtvā suniśitān śarān

10. Then, having strung his bow and swiftly aimed his very sharp arrows, Rama indeed slew the demon.
धनुषा ज्यागुणवता सप्तबाणान्मुमोच ह ।
रुक्मपुङ्खान्महावेगान् सुपर्णानिलतुल्यगान् ॥११॥
11. dhanuṣā jyāguṇavatā saptabāṇānmumoca ha ,
rukmapuṅkhānmahāvegān suparṇānilatulyagān.
11. dhanuṣā jyāguṇavatā saptabāṇān mumoca ha
rukmapuṅkhān mahāvegān suparṇānilatulyagān
11. jyāguṇavatā dhanuṣā rukmapuṅkhān mahāvegān
suparṇānilatulyagān saptabāṇān mumoca ha
11. With his bow (dhanuṣ), which was fitted with a bowstring, he indeed released seven arrows. These arrows had golden shafts, were of great speed, and flew like Suparna and the wind.
ते शरीरं विराधस्य भित्त्वा बर्हिणवाससः ।
निपेतुः शोणितादिग्धा धरण्यां पावकोपमाः ॥१२॥
12. te śarīraṃ virādhasya bhittvā barhiṇavāsasaḥ ,
nipetuḥ śoṇitādigdhā dharaṇyāṃ pāvakopamāḥ.
12. te śarīram virādhasya bhittvā barhiṇavāsasaḥ
nipetuḥ śoṇitādigdhāḥ dharaṇyām pāvakopamāḥ
12. te śoṇitādigdhāḥ pāvakopamāḥ barhiṇavāsasaḥ
virādhasya śarīram bhittvā dharaṇyām nipetuḥ
12. Having pierced the body of Viradha, who wore garments adorned with peacock feathers, those arrows, smeared with blood, fell onto the ground resembling flames.
स विनद्य महानादं शूलं शक्रध्वजोपमम् ।
प्रगृह्याशोभत तदा व्यात्तानन इवान्तकः ॥१३॥
13. sa vinadya mahānādaṃ śūlaṃ śakradhvajopamam ,
pragṛhyāśobhata tadā vyāttānana ivāntakaḥ.
13. sa vinadya mahānādam śūlam śakradhvajopamam
pragṛhya aśobhata tadā vyāttānanaḥ iva antakaḥ
13. sa mahānādam vinadya śakradhvajopamam śūlam
pragṛhya tadā vyāttānanaḥ antakaḥ iva aśobhata
13. Then, letting out a great roar and grasping a spear that resembled Indra's banner, he appeared like Death (antaka) with his mouth agape.
तच्छूलं वज्रसंकाशं गगने ज्वलनोपमम् ।
द्वाभ्यां शराभ्यां चिच्छेद रामः शस्त्रभृतां वरः ॥१४॥
14. tacchūlaṃ vajrasaṃkāśaṃ gagane jvalanopamam ,
dvābhyāṃ śarābhyāṃ ciccheda rāmaḥ śastrabhṛtāṃ varaḥ.
14. tat śūlam vajrasaṃkāśam gagane jvalanopamam dvābhyām
śarābhyām ciccheda rāmaḥ śastrabhṛtām varaḥ
14. rāmaḥ śastrabhṛtām varaḥ dvābhyām śarābhyām gagane
vajrasaṃkāśam jvalanopamam tat śūlam ciccheda
14. Rama, the best of those who bear weapons, cut that spear - which was like a thunderbolt and resembled fire in the sky - with two arrows.
तस्य रौद्रस्य सौमित्रिर्बाहुं सव्यं बभञ्ज ह ।
रामस्तु दक्षिणं बाहुं तरसा तस्य रक्षसः ॥१५॥
15. tasya raudrasya saumitrirbāhuṃ savyaṃ babhañja ha ,
rāmastu dakṣiṇaṃ bāhuṃ tarasā tasya rakṣasaḥ.
15. tasya raudrasya saumitriḥ bāhum savyam babhañja
ha rāmaḥ tu dakṣiṇam bāhum tarasā tasya rakṣasaḥ
15. saumitriḥ tasya raudrasya savyam bāhum ha babhañja .
rāmaḥ tu tarasā tasya rakṣasaḥ dakṣiṇam bāhum (babhañja)
15. Lakshmana (Saumitri) indeed broke the left arm of that fierce (demon). But Rama, with great force, broke the right arm of that demon.
स भग्नबाहुः संविग्नो निपपाताशु राक्षसः ।
धरण्यां मेघसंकाशो वज्रभिन्न इवाचलः ।
इदं प्रोवाच काकुत्स्थं विराधः पुरुषर्षभम् ॥१६॥
16. sa bhagnabāhuḥ saṃvigno nipapātāśu rākṣasaḥ ,
dharaṇyāṃ meghasaṃkāśo vajrabhinna ivācalaḥ ,
idaṃ provāca kākutsthaṃ virādhaḥ puruṣarṣabham.
16. sa bhagnabāhuḥ saṃvignaḥ nipapāta
āśu rākṣasaḥ dharaṇyām meghasaṃkāśaḥ
vajrabhinnaḥ iva acalaḥ idam provāca
kākutstham virādhaḥ puruṣarṣabham
16. sa rākṣasaḥ bhagnabāhuḥ saṃvignaḥ vajrabhinnaḥ meghasaṃkāśaḥ acalaḥ iva āśu dharaṇyām nipapāta .
virādhaḥ idam puruṣarṣabham kākutstham provāca
16. With his arms broken and greatly distressed, that demon quickly fell to the earth like a cloud-like mountain shattered by a thunderbolt. Viradha then said this to Rama (Kākutstha), the foremost among men.
कौसल्या सुप्रजास्तात रामस्त्वं विदितो मया ।
वैदेही च महाभागा लक्ष्मणश्च महायशाः ॥१७॥
17. kausalyā suprajāstāta rāmastvaṃ vidito mayā ,
vaidehī ca mahābhāgā lakṣmaṇaśca mahāyaśāḥ.
17. kausalyā suprajāḥ tāta rāmaḥ tvam viditaḥ mayā
| vaidehī ca mahābhāgā lakṣmaṇaḥ ca mahāyaśāḥ
17. tāta tvam kausalyā suprajāḥ rāmaḥ mayā viditaḥ
vaidehī ca mahābhāgā lakṣmaṇaḥ ca mahāyaśāḥ
17. O dear one, you are known to me as Rama, the excellent son of Kaushalya. And Vaidehi (Sita) is highly blessed, and Lakshmana is greatly renowned.
अभिशापादहं घोरां प्रविष्टो राक्षसीं तनुम् ।
तुम्बुरुर्नाम गन्धर्वः शप्तो वैश्वरणेन हि ॥१८॥
18. abhiśāpādahaṃ ghorāṃ praviṣṭo rākṣasīṃ tanum ,
tumbururnāma gandharvaḥ śapto vaiśvaraṇena hi.
18. abhiśāpāt aham ghorām praviṣṭaḥ rākṣasīm tanum |
tumburuḥ nāma gandharvaḥ śaptaḥ vaiśravaṇena hi
18. hi aham tumburuḥ nāma gandharvaḥ vaiśravaṇena
śaptaḥ abhiśāpāt ghorām rākṣasīm tanum praviṣṭaḥ
18. Indeed, I, Tumburu by name, a gandharva, was cursed by Vaishravana (Kubera), and due to that curse, I entered a terrible demonic body.
प्रसाद्यमानश्च मया सो ऽब्रवीन्मां महायशाः ।
यदा दाशरथी रामस्त्वां वधिष्यति संयुगे ॥१९॥
19. prasādyamānaśca mayā so'bravīnmāṃ mahāyaśāḥ ,
yadā dāśarathī rāmastvāṃ vadhiṣyati saṃyuge.
19. prasādyamānaḥ ca mayā saḥ abravīt mām mahāyaśāḥ
| yadā dāśarathī rāmaḥ tvām vadhiṣyati saṃyuge
19. ca mayā prasādyamānaḥ saḥ mahāyaśāḥ mām abravīt
yadā dāśarathī rāmaḥ tvām saṃyuge vadhiṣyati
19. And as I was propitiating him, that greatly renowned one (Vaishravana) said to me, "When Rama, the son of Dasaratha, kills you in battle..."
तदा प्रकृतिमापन्नो भवान् स्वर्गं गमिष्यति ।
इति वैश्रवणो राजा रम्भासक्तमुवाच ह ॥२०॥
20. tadā prakṛtimāpanno bhavān svargaṃ gamiṣyati ,
iti vaiśravaṇo rājā rambhāsaktamuvāca ha.
20. tadā prakṛtim āpannaḥ bhavān svargam gamiṣyati
| iti vaiśravaṇaḥ rājā rambhāsaktam uvāca ha
20. tadā bhavān prakṛtim āpannaḥ svargam gamiṣyati
iti vaiśravaṇaḥ rājā rambhāsaktam ha uvāca
20. "Then you, having regained your original nature (prakṛti), will go to heaven." Thus, King Vaishravana indeed spoke to me, who was engrossed with Rambha.
अनुपस्थीयमानो मां संक्रुद्धो व्यजहार ह ।
तव प्रसादान्मुक्तो ऽहमभिशापात् सुदारुणात् ।
भवनं स्वं गमिष्यामि स्वस्ति वो ऽस्तु परंतप ॥२१॥
21. anupasthīyamāno māṃ saṃkruddho vyajahāra ha ,
tava prasādānmukto'hamabhiśāpāt sudāruṇāt ,
bhavanaṃ svaṃ gamiṣyāmi svasti vo'stu paraṃtapa.
21. anupasthīyamānaḥ mām saṃkruddhaḥ
vyajahāra ha | tava prasādāt muktaḥ aham
abhiśāpāt sudāruṇāt | bhavanam svam
gamiṣyāmi svasti vaḥ astu paraṃtapa
21. mām anupasthīyamānaḥ saṃkruddhaḥ ha
vyajahāra tava prasādāt sudāruṇāt
abhiśāpāt aham muktaḥ svam bhavanam
gamiṣyāmi vaḥ astu svasti paraṃtapa
21. He, not having been approached by me, became greatly enraged and spoke (to me): 'By your grace, I am freed from a very terrible curse. I will go to my own abode. May there be well-being (svasti) for you, O tormentor of foes.'
इतो वसति धर्मात्मा शरभङ्गः प्रतापवान् ।
अध्यर्धयोजने तात महर्षिः सूर्यसंनिभः ॥२२॥
22. ito vasati dharmātmā śarabhaṅgaḥ pratāpavān ,
adhyardhayojane tāta maharṣiḥ sūryasaṃnibhaḥ.
22. itaḥ vasati dharmātmā śarabhaṅgaḥ pratāpavān
| adhyardhayojane tāta maharṣiḥ sūryasaṃnibhaḥ
22. tāta! itaḥ adhyardhayojane dharmātmā pratāpavān
sūryasaṃnibhaḥ maharṣiḥ śarabhaṅgaḥ vasati
22. From this place, at a distance of one and a half yojanas, O dear one (tāta), dwells the great sage (maharṣi) Śarabhaṅga, who is righteous-souled (dharmātman), powerful, and radiant like the sun.
तं क्षिप्रमभिगच्छ त्वं स ते श्रेयो विधास्यति ।
अवटे चापि मां राम निक्षिप्य कुशली व्रज ॥२३॥
23. taṃ kṣipramabhigaccha tvaṃ sa te śreyo vidhāsyati ,
avaṭe cāpi māṃ rāma nikṣipya kuśalī vraja.
23. tam kṣipram abhigaccha tvam saḥ te śreyaḥ vidhāsyati
| avaṭe ca api mām rāma nikṣipya kuśalī vraja
23. tvam tam kṣipram abhigaccha saḥ te śreyaḥ vidhāsyati
rāma! avaṭe ca api mām nikṣipya kuśalī vraja
23. You should go to him quickly; he will bestow welfare upon you. And, O Rāma, after placing me in this pit, you may go safely.
रक्षसां गतसत्त्वानामेष धर्मः सनातनः ।
अवटे ये निधीयन्ते तेषां लोकाः सनातनाः ॥२४॥
24. rakṣasāṃ gatasattvānāmeṣa dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ ,
avaṭe ye nidhīyante teṣāṃ lokāḥ sanātanāḥ.
24. rakṣasām gatasattvānām eṣaḥ dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ
| avaṭe ye nidhīyante teṣām lokāḥ sanātanāḥ
24. gatasattvānām rakṣasām eṣaḥ sanātanaḥ dharmaḥ
ye avaṭe nidhīyante teṣām sanātanāḥ lokāḥ
24. This is the eternal natural law (dharma) for Rākṣasas whose life-force has departed. For those who are deposited in a pit, eternal realms (lokas) are granted to them.
एवमुक्त्वा तु काकुत्स्थं विराधः शरपीडितः ।
बभूव स्वर्गसंप्राप्तो न्यस्तदेहो महाबलः ॥२५॥
25. evamuktvā tu kākutsthaṃ virādhaḥ śarapīḍitaḥ ,
babhūva svargasaṃprāpto nyastadeho mahābalaḥ.
25. evam uktvā tu kākutstham virādhaḥ śarapīḍitaḥ |
babhūva svargasaṃprāptaḥ nyastadehaḥ mahābalaḥ
25. virādhaḥ śarapīḍitaḥ (mahābalaḥ) kākutstham evam
uktvā tu nyastadehaḥ svargasaṃprāptaḥ babhūva
25. Thus having spoken to Kakutstha (Rama), Viradha, tormented by arrows, abandoned his body and, mighty in strength, attained heaven.
तं मुक्तकण्ठमुत्क्षिप्य शङ्कुकर्णं महास्वनम् ।
विराधं प्राक्षिपच्छ्वभ्रे नदन्तं भैरवस्वनम् ॥२६॥
26. taṃ muktakaṇṭhamutkṣipya śaṅkukarṇaṃ mahāsvanam ,
virādhaṃ prākṣipacchvabhre nadantaṃ bhairavasvanam.
26. tam muktakaṇṭham utkṣipya śaṅkukarṇam mahāsvanam |
virādham prākṣipat śvabhre nadantam bhairavasvanam
26. utkṣipya tam śaṅkukarṇam virādham muktakaṇṭham mahāsvanam
(ca) nadantam bhairavasvanam (ca) śvabhre prākṣipat
26. Lifting up that Viradha, who had pointed ears and was shouting with a great roar, they cast him into a pit while he was still emitting a terrifying sound.
ततस्तु तौ काञ्चनचित्रकार्मुकौ निहत्य रक्षः परिगृह्य मैथिलीम् ।
विजह्रतुस्तौ मुदितौ महावने दिवि स्थितौ चन्द्रदिवाकराविव ॥२७॥
27. tatastu tau kāñcanacitrakārmukau nihatya rakṣaḥ parigṛhya maithilīm ,
vijahratustau muditau mahāvane divi sthitau candradivākarāviva.
27. tatas tu tau kāñcanacitrakārmukau
nihatya rakṣaḥ parigṛhya maithilīm
| vijahratus tau muditau mahāvane
divi sthitau candradivākarau iva
27. tatas tu kāñcanacitrakārmukau tau
rakṣaḥ nihatya maithilīm parigṛhya
(ca) muditau tau mahāvane vijahratus
divi sthitau candradivākarau iva
27. Then, those two (Rama and Lakshmana), bearing their golden and beautifully adorned bows, having killed the demon and rescued Maithili (Sita), wandered joyfully through the great forest, resembling the moon and sun shining in the sky.
