अथ तस्याप्रमेयस्य तद्वनं परिपृच्छतः ।
विश्वामित्रो महातेजा व्याख्यातुमुपचक्रमे ॥१॥
1. atha tasyāprameyasya tadvanaṃ paripṛcchataḥ ,
viśvāmitro mahātejā vyākhyātumupacakrame.

1. Then, Viśvāmitra, the greatly resplendent one, began to explain to him (Rāma) who was thus inquiring about that immeasurable forest.
एष पूर्वाश्रमो राम वामनस्य महात्मनः ।
सिद्धाश्रम इति ख्यातः सिद्धो ह्यत्र महातपाः ॥२॥
2. eṣa pūrvāśramo rāma vāmanasya mahātmanaḥ ,
siddhāśrama iti khyātaḥ siddho hyatra mahātapāḥ.
2. eṣa pūrvaḥ āśramaḥ rāma vāmanasya mahā ātmanaḥ |
siddhāśramaḥ iti khyātaḥ siddhaḥ hi atra mahātapāḥ

2. Rāma, this is the former hermitage (āśrama) of the great-souled Vāmana. It is known as Siddhāśrama (the hermitage of the perfected ones), for here a great ascetic (tapas) achieved perfection.
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु राजा वैरोचनिर्बलिः ।
निर्जित्य दैवतगणान् सेन्द्रांश्च समरुद्गणान् ।
कारयामास तद् राज्यं त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतः ॥३॥
3. etasminneva kāle tu rājā vairocanirbaliḥ ,
nirjitya daivatagaṇān sendrāṃśca samarudgaṇān ,
kārayāmāsa tad rājyaṃ triṣu lokeṣu viśrutaḥ.
3. etasmin eva kāle tu rājā vairocanir
baliḥ | nirjitya daivatagaṇān
sa-indrān ca sa-marudgaṇān | kārayām
āsa tat rājyam triṣu lokeṣu viśrutaḥ

sa-marudgaṇān daivatagaṇān nirjitya

3. Indeed, at that very time, King Bali, son of Virocana, renowned in the three worlds, having conquered the hosts of gods, including Indra and the Maruts, established his rule.
बलेस्तु यजमानस्य देवाः साग्निपुरोगमाः ।
समागम्य स्वयं चैव विष्णुमूचुरिहाश्रमे ॥४॥
4. balestu yajamānasya devāḥ sāgnipurogamāḥ ,
samāgamya svayaṃ caiva viṣṇumūcurihāśrame.
4. baleḥ tu yajamānasya devāḥ sāgnipurōgamāḥ
samāgamya svayam ca eva viṣṇum ūcuḥ iha āśrame
4. devāḥ sāgnipurōgamāḥ svayam samāgamya ca eva,
iha āśrame,
baleḥ yajamānasya viṣṇum ūcuḥ tu.
4. The gods, with Agni at their forefront, having assembled themselves, spoke to Viṣṇu here in the hermitage, concerning Bali, who was performing a Vedic ritual (yajña).
बलिर्वैरोचनिर्विष्णो यजते यज्ञमुत्तमम् ।
असमाप्ते क्रतौ तस्मिन् स्वकार्यमभिपद्यताम् ॥५॥
5. balirvairocanirviṣṇo yajate yajñamuttamam ,
asamāpte kratau tasmin svakāryamabhipadyatām.
5. baliḥ vairocaniḥ viṣṇo yajate yajñam uttamam
asamāpte kratau tasmin svakāryam abhipadyatām
5. viṣṇo,
vairocaniḥ baliḥ uttamam yajñam yajate.
tasmin kratau asamāpte,
svakāryam abhipadyatām.
5. O Viṣṇu, Bali, the son of Virocana, is performing a supreme Vedic ritual (yajña). Let our objective be achieved before that ritual (kratu) is completed.
ये चैनमभिवर्तन्ते याचितार इतस्ततः ।
यच्च यत्र यथावच्च सर्वं तेभ्यः प्रयच्छति ॥६॥
6. ye cainamabhivartante yācitāra itastataḥ ,
yacca yatra yathāvacca sarvaṃ tebhyaḥ prayacchati.
6. ye ca enam abhivartante yācitāraḥ itaḥ tataḥ yat
ca yatra yathāvat ca sarvam tebhyaḥ prayacchati
6. ye yācitāraḥ ca itaḥ tataḥ enam abhivartante,
tebhyaḥ saḥ yat ca yatra ca yathāvat ca sarvam prayacchati.
6. And to those who approach him from all directions as supplicants, he grants everything - whatever, wherever, and exactly as it is requested.
स त्वं सुरहितार्थाय मायायोगमुपाश्रितः ।
वामनत्वं गतो विष्णो कुरु कल्याणमुत्तमम् ॥७॥
7. sa tvaṃ surahitārthāya māyāyogamupāśritaḥ ,
vāmanatvaṃ gato viṣṇo kuru kalyāṇamuttamam.
7. sa tvam surahitārthāya māyāyogam upāśritaḥ
vāmanatvam gataḥ viṣṇo kuru kalyāṇam uttamam
7. viṣṇo,
saḥ tvam surahitārthāya māyāyogam upāśritaḥ vāmanatvam gataḥ,
uttamam kalyāṇam kuru.
7. Therefore, O Viṣṇu, you, having resorted to the power of illusion (māyā-yoga) for the welfare of the gods, and having assumed the form of a dwarf, accomplish the supreme auspicious deed (kalyāṇa).
अयं सिद्धाश्रमो नाम प्रसादात्ते भविष्यति ।
सिद्धे कर्मणि देवेश उत्तिष्ठ भगवन्नितः ॥८॥
8. ayaṃ siddhāśramo nāma prasādātte bhaviṣyati ,
siddhe karmaṇi deveśa uttiṣṭha bhagavannitaḥ.
8. ayam siddhāśramaḥ nāma prasādāt te bhaviṣyati
siddhe karmaṇi deveśa uttiṣṭha bhagavan itaḥ
8. deveśa bhagavan,
te prasādāt ayam nāma siddhāśramaḥ bhaviṣyati.
karmaṇi siddhe,
itaḥ uttiṣṭha.
8. This hermitage (āśrama) will be known as Siddhashrama through your grace. O Lord of gods, O revered one, now that the task (karma) is accomplished, arise from here.
अथ विष्णुर्महातेजा अदित्यां समजायत ।
वामनं रूपमास्थाय वैरोचनिमुपागमत् ॥९॥
9. atha viṣṇurmahātejā adityāṃ samajāyata ,
vāmanaṃ rūpamāsthāya vairocanimupāgamat.
9. atha viṣṇuḥ mahātejāḥ adityām samajayata
vāmanam rūpam āsthāya vairocanim upāgamat
9. atha mahātejāḥ viṣṇuḥ adityām samajayata.
vāmanam rūpam āsthāya vairocanim upāgamat.
9. Then, the greatly effulgent Vishnu (Viṣṇu) was born from Aditi. Assuming the form of Vamana (Vāmana), he approached Vairochani (Vairocanī).
त्रीन् क्रमानथ भिक्षित्वा प्रतिगृह्य च मानतः ।
आक्रम्य लोकांल् लोकात्मा सर्वभूतहिते रतः ॥१०॥
10. trīn kramānatha bhikṣitvā pratigṛhya ca mānataḥ ,
ākramya lokāṃl lokātmā sarvabhūtahite rataḥ.
10. trīn kramān atha bhikṣitvā pratigṛhya ca mānataḥ
ākramya lokān lokātmā sarvabhūtahite rataḥ
10. atha,
sarvabhūtahite rataḥ lokātmā trīn kramān mānataḥ bhikṣitvā ca pratigṛhya,
lokān ākramya.
10. Then, having begged for and received three steps (of land) according to a measure, the Soul (ātman) of the worlds, who is devoted to the welfare of all beings, pervaded the worlds.
महेन्द्राय पुनः प्रादान्नियम्य बलिमोजसा ।
त्रैलोक्यं स महातेजाश्चक्रे शक्रवशं पुनः ॥११॥
11. mahendrāya punaḥ prādānniyamya balimojasā ,
trailokyaṃ sa mahātejāścakre śakravaśaṃ punaḥ.
11. mahendrāya punaḥ prādāt niyamya balim ojasā
trailokyam saḥ mahātejāḥ cakre śakravaśam punaḥ
11. saḥ mahātejāḥ,
ojasā balim punaḥ niyamya,
mahendrāya trailokyam prādāt,
punaḥ śakravaśam cakre.
11. Having again subdued Bali (Bali) with his might, that greatly effulgent one then gave the three worlds (trailokya) to Mahendra (Mahendra) and made them again subject to Shakra (Śakra).
तेनैष पूर्वमाक्रान्त आश्रमः श्रमनाशनः ।
मयापि भक्त्या तस्यैष वामनस्योपभुज्यते ॥१२॥
12. tenaiṣa pūrvamākrānta āśramaḥ śramanāśanaḥ ,
mayāpi bhaktyā tasyaiṣa vāmanasyopabhujyate.
12. tena eṣaḥ pūrvam ākrāntaḥ āśramaḥ śramanāśanaḥ
mayā api bhaktyā tasya eṣaḥ vāmanasya upabhujyate
12. eṣaḥ śramanāśanaḥ āśramaḥ tena pūrvam ākrāntaḥ
mayā api tasya vāmanasya bhaktyā eṣaḥ upabhujyate
12. This hermitage (āśrama), which removes all weariness, was formerly occupied by him. Now, this very place is also being used by me out of devotion (bhakti) to that Vāmana.
एतमाश्रममायान्ति राक्षसा विघ्नकारिणः ।
अत्र ते पुरुषव्याघ्र हन्तव्या दुष्टचारिणः ॥१३॥
13. etamāśramamāyānti rākṣasā vighnakāriṇaḥ ,
atra te puruṣavyāghra hantavyā duṣṭacāriṇaḥ.
13. etam āśramam āyānti rākṣasāḥ vighnakāriṇaḥ
atra te puruṣavyāghra hantavyāḥ duṣṭacāriṇaḥ
13. puruṣavyāghra rākṣasāḥ vighnakāriṇaḥ etam
āśramam āyānti atra te duṣṭacāriṇaḥ hantavyāḥ
13. Rākṣasas, who create obstacles, come to this hermitage (āśrama). Here, O tiger among men, those evildoers should be killed.
अद्य गच्छामहे राम सिद्धाश्रममनुत्तमम् ।
तदाश्रमपदं तात तवाप्येतद् यथा मम ॥१४॥
14. adya gacchāmahe rāma siddhāśramamanuttamam ,
tadāśramapadaṃ tāta tavāpyetad yathā mama.
14. adya gacchāmahe rāma siddhāśramam anuttamam
tat āśramapadam tāta tava api etat yathā mama
14. rāma adya anuttamam siddhāśramam gacchāmahe
tāta tat āśramapadam tava api etat yathā mama
14. Today, O Rāma, we shall go to the supreme Siddhashrama. That hermitage (āśrama) abode, my dear one, is yours also, just as it is mine.
तं दृष्ट्वा मुनयः सर्वे सिद्धाश्रमनिवासिनः ।
उत्पत्योत्पत्य सहसा विश्वामित्रमपूजयन् ॥१५॥
15. taṃ dṛṣṭvā munayaḥ sarve siddhāśramanivāsinaḥ ,
utpatyotpatya sahasā viśvāmitramapūjayan.
15. tam dṛṣṭvā munayaḥ sarve siddhāśramanivāsinaḥ
utpatya utpatya sahasā viśvāmitram apūjayan
15. tam dṛṣṭvā sarve siddhāśramanivāsinaḥ munayaḥ
sahasā utpatya utpatya viśvāmitram apūjayan
15. Upon seeing him, all the sages residing in the Siddhashrama suddenly leapt up repeatedly and worshipped Viśvāmitra.
यथार्हं चक्रिरे पूजां विश्वामित्राय धीमते ।
तथैव राजपुत्राभ्यामकुर्वन्नतिथिक्रियाम् ॥१६॥
16. yathārhaṃ cakrire pūjāṃ viśvāmitrāya dhīmate ,
tathaiva rājaputrābhyāmakurvannatithikriyām.
16. yathārham cakrire pūjām viśvāmitrāya dhīmate
tathā eva rājaputrābhyām akurvan atithikriyām
16. yathārham dhīmate viśvāmitrāya pūjām cakrire
tathā eva rājaputrābhyām atithikriyām akurvan
16. They offered worship to the wise (dhīmat) Viśvāmitra as was due, and similarly, they extended hospitality to the two princes.
मुहूर्तमथ विश्रान्तौ राजपुत्रावरिंदमौ ।
प्राञ्जली मुनिशार्दूलमूचतू रघुनन्दनौ ॥१७॥
17. muhūrtamatha viśrāntau rājaputrāvariṃdamau ,
prāñjalī muniśārdūlamūcatū raghunandanau.
17. muhūrtam atha viśrāntau rājaputrau arindamau
prāñjalī muniśārdūlam ūcatuḥ raghunandanau
17. atha muhūrtam viśrāntau arindamau raghunandanau
rājaputrau prāñjalī muniśārdūlam ūcatuḥ
17. Then, after resting for a moment, the two princes, subduers of enemies (arindama) and delights of the Raghu dynasty, with folded hands, spoke to the tiger among sages (muniśārdūla) (Viśvāmitra).
अद्यैव दीक्षां प्रविश भद्रं ते मुनिपुंगव ।
सिद्धाश्रमो ऽयं सिद्धः स्यात् सत्यमस्तु वचस्तव ॥१८॥
18. adyaiva dīkṣāṃ praviśa bhadraṃ te munipuṃgava ,
siddhāśramo'yaṃ siddhaḥ syāt satyamastu vacastava.
18. adya eva dīkṣām praviśa bhadram te munipuṅgava
siddhāśramaḥ ayam siddhaḥ syāt satyam astu vacaḥ tava
18. munipuṅgava te bhadram adya eva dīkṣām praviśa ayam
siddhāśramaḥ siddhaḥ syāt tava vacaḥ satyam astu
18. "O chief of sages (munipuṅgava), enter the initiation (dīkṣā) today itself; may it be well for you. May this Siddha hermitage (Siddhāśrama) become accomplished, and may your word be true."
एवमुक्तो महातेजा विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
प्रविवेश तदा दीक्षां नियतो नियतेन्द्रियः ॥१९॥
19. evamukto mahātejā viśvāmitro mahāmuniḥ ,
praviveśa tadā dīkṣāṃ niyato niyatendriyaḥ.
19. evam uktaḥ mahātejāḥ viśvāmitraḥ mahāmuniḥ
praviveśa tadā dīkṣām niyataḥ niyatendriyaḥ
19. evam uktaḥ mahātejāḥ mahāmuniḥ viśvāmitraḥ
tadā niyataḥ niyatendriyaḥ dīkṣām praviveśa
19. Thus addressed, the greatly effulgent great sage Viśvāmitra then entered the initiation (dīkṣā), composed and with controlled senses.
कुमारावपि तां रात्रिमुषित्वा सुसमाहितौ ।
प्रभातकाले चोत्थाय विश्वामित्रमवन्दताम् ॥२०॥
20. kumārāvapi tāṃ rātrimuṣitvā susamāhitau ,
prabhātakāle cotthāya viśvāmitramavandatām.
20. kumārau api tām rātrim uṣitvā su-samāhitau
prabhāta-kāle ca utthāya viśvāmitram avandatām
20. tau kumārau api su-samāhitau tām rātrim uṣitvā,
prabhāta-kāle ca utthāya,
viśvāmitram avandatām
20. The two princes, having spent that night perfectly composed, rose at dawn and saluted Viśvāmitra.
