पुत्रांश्चिरगताञ्ज्ञात्वा सगरो रघुनन्दन ।
नप्तारमब्रवीद् राजा दीप्यमानं स्वतेजसा ॥१॥
1. putrāṃściragatāñjñātvā sagaro raghunandana ,

1. O scion of Raghu, King Sagara, realizing his sons had been gone for a long time, spoke to his grandson, who was shining with his own splendor.
शूरश्च कृतविद्यश्च पूर्वैस्तुल्यो ऽसि तेजसा ।
पितॄणां गतिमन्विच्छ येन चाश्वो ऽपहारितः ॥२॥
2. śūraśca kṛtavidyaśca pūrvaistulyo'si tejasā ,
pitṝṇāṃ gatimanviccha yena cāśvo'pahāritaḥ.
2. śūraḥ ca kṛtavidyaḥ ca pūrvaiḥ tulyaḥ asi tejasā
pitṝṇām gatim anviccha yena ca aśvaḥ apahāritaḥ

2. You are brave and learned, and equal to your ancestors in splendor. Seek the path of your forefathers and find by whom the horse was stolen.
अन्तर्भौमानि सत्त्वानि वीर्यवन्ति महान्ति च ।
तेषां त्वं प्रतिघातार्थं सासिं गृह्णीष्व कार्मुकम् ॥३॥
3. antarbhaumāni sattvāni vīryavanti mahānti ca ,
teṣāṃ tvaṃ pratighātārthaṃ sāsiṃ gṛhṇīṣva kārmukam.
3. antarbhaumāni sattvāni vīryavanti mahānti ca |
teṣām tvam pratighātārtham sāsim gṛhṇīṣva kārmukam

3. There are powerful and mighty beings within the earth. To counteract them, you should take up your sword and your bow.
अभिवाद्याभिवाद्यांस्त्वं हत्वा विघ्नकरानपि ।
सिद्धार्थः संनिवर्तस्व मम यज्ञस्य पारगः ॥४॥
4. abhivādyābhivādyāṃstvaṃ hatvā vighnakarānapi ,
siddhārthaḥ saṃnivartasva mama yajñasya pāragaḥ.
4. abhivādya abhivādyān tvam hatvā vighnakarān api
| siddhārthaḥ saṃnivartasva mama yajñasya pāragaḥ

4. Having paid respects to those worthy of veneration, and having killed those who create obstacles, you, with your purpose accomplished, should return, having brought my Vedic ritual (yajña) to completion.
एवमुक्तो ऽंशुमान् सम्यक् सगरेण महात्मना ।
धनुरादाय खड्गं च जगाम लघुविक्रमः ॥५॥
5. evamukto'ṃśumān samyak sagareṇa mahātmanā ,
dhanurādāya khaḍgaṃ ca jagāma laghuvikramaḥ.
5. evam uktaḥ aṃśumān samyak sagareṇa mahātmanā
| dhanuḥ ādāya khaḍgam ca jagāma laghuvikramaḥ
5. aṃśumān sagareṇa mahātmanā evam samyak uktaḥ

5. Thus addressed properly by the great-souled Sagara, Anshuman, taking his bow and sword, departed with swift valor.
स खातं पितृभिर्मार्गमन्तर्भौमं महात्मभिः ।
प्रापद्यत नरश्रेष्ठ तेन राज्ञाभिचोदितः ॥६॥
6. sa khātaṃ pitṛbhirmārgamantarbhaumaṃ mahātmabhiḥ ,
prāpadyata naraśreṣṭha tena rājñābhicoditaḥ.
6. sa khātam pitṛbhiḥ mārgam antar-bhaumam mahātmabhiḥ
prāpadyata naraśreṣṭha tena rājñā abhicoditaḥ
6. naraśreṣṭha tena rājñā abhicoditaḥ saḥ mahātmabhiḥ
pitṛbhiḥ khātam antar-bhaumam mārgam prāpadyata
6. O best among men, urged by that king, he (Anśuman) entered the subterranean path that had been dug by his great-souled ancestors.
दैत्यदानवरक्षोभिः पिशाचपतगोरगैः ।
पूज्यमानं महातेजा दिशागजमपश्यत ॥७॥
7. daityadānavarakṣobhiḥ piśācapatagoragaiḥ ,
pūjyamānaṃ mahātejā diśāgajamapaśyata.
7. daitya-dānava-rakṣobhiḥ piśāca-pataga-uragaiḥ
pūjyamānam mahātejā diśāgajam apaśyata
7. mahātejāḥ daitya-dānava-rakṣobhiḥ
piśāca-pataga-uragaiḥ pūjyamānam diśāgajam apaśyata
7. The greatly refulgent (Anśuman) saw the directional elephant, who was being worshipped by Daityas, Dānavas, Rakṣasas, Piśācas, birds, and serpents.
स तं प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा पृष्ट्वा चैव निरामयम् ।
पितॄन् स परिपप्रच्छ वाजिहर्तारमेव च ॥८॥
8. sa taṃ pradakṣiṇaṃ kṛtvā pṛṣṭvā caiva nirāmayam ,
pitṝn sa paripapraccha vājihartārameva ca.
8. sa tam pradakṣiṇam kṛtvā pṛṣṭvā ca eva nirāmayam
pitṝn sa paripapraccha vāji-hartāram eva ca
8. sa tam pradakṣiṇam kṛtvā ca eva nirāmayam pṛṣṭvā

8. Having circumambulated him and inquired about his well-being, he (Anśuman) then asked (the elephant) about his ancestors and also about the stealer of the horse.
दिशागजस्तु तच्छ्रुत्वा प्रीत्याहांशुमतो वचः ।
आसमञ्जकृतार्थस्त्वं सहाश्वः शीघ्रमेष्यसि ॥९॥
9. diśāgajastu tacchrutvā prītyāhāṃśumato vacaḥ ,
āsamañjakṛtārthastvaṃ sahāśvaḥ śīghrameṣyasi.
9. diśāgajaḥ tu tat śrutvā prītyā āha aṃśumataḥ vacaḥ
āsamāñja-kṛtārthaḥ tvam saha-aśvaḥ śīghram eṣyasi
9. diśāgajaḥ tu tat śrutvā prītyā aṃśumataḥ vacaḥ āha:
"āsamāñja-kṛtārthaḥ tvam saha-aśvaḥ śīghram eṣyasi"
9. But the directional elephant, having heard that, joyfully spoke these words to Anśuman: "O you whose purpose is accomplished (in connection with Asamañjas), you will quickly return with the horse!"
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा सर्वानेव दिशागजान् ।
यथाक्रमं यथान्यायं प्रष्टुं समुपचक्रमे ॥१०॥
10. tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā sarvāneva diśāgajān ,
yathākramaṃ yathānyāyaṃ praṣṭuṃ samupacakrame.
10. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā sarvān eva diśāgajān
yathākramam yathānyāyam praṣṭum samupacakrame
10. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā saḥ (implied) sarvān eva
diśāgajān yathākramam yathānyāyam praṣṭum samupacakrame
10. Upon hearing those words of his, he then began to question all the elephants of the quarters in due order and properly.
तैश्च सर्वैर्दिशापालैर्वाक्यज्ञैर्वाक्यकोविदैः ।
पूजितः सहयश्चैव गन्तासीत्यभिचोदितः ॥११॥
11. taiśca sarvairdiśāpālairvākyajñairvākyakovidaiḥ ,
pūjitaḥ sahayaścaiva gantāsītyabhicoditaḥ.
11. taiḥ ca sarvaiḥ diśāpālaiḥ vākyajñaiḥ vākyakovidaiḥ
pūjitaḥ sahayaḥ ca eva gantā asi iti abhicoditaḥ
11. ca taiḥ sarvaiḥ diśāpālaiḥ vākyajñaiḥ vākyakovidaiḥ
pūjitaḥ ca eva gantā asi iti abhicoditaḥ
11. And by all those guardians of the quarters (diśāpāla), who were eloquent and skilled in speech, he was honored and exhorted with the words: "You shall go (gantā) with a horse!"
तेषां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा जगाम लघुविक्रमः ।
भस्मराशीकृता यत्र पितरस्तस्य सागराः ॥१२॥
12. teṣāṃ tadvacanaṃ śrutvā jagāma laghuvikramaḥ ,
bhasmarāśīkṛtā yatra pitarastasya sāgarāḥ.
12. teṣām tat vacanam śrutvā jagāma laghuvikramaḥ
bhasmarāśīkṛtāḥ yatra pitaraḥ tasya sāgarāḥ
12. teṣām tat vacanam śrutvā laghuvikramaḥ (saḥ) jagāma
yatra tasya sāgarāḥ pitaraḥ bhasmarāśīkṛtāḥ (āsan)
12. Having heard those words of theirs, he, swift-footed, went to the place where his ancestors, the sons of Sagara, had been reduced to heaps of ashes.
स दुःखवशमापन्नस्त्वसमञ्जसुतस्तदा ।
चुक्रोश परमार्तस्तु वधात्तेषां सुदुःखितः ॥१३॥
13. sa duḥkhavaśamāpannastvasamañjasutastadā ,
cukrośa paramārtastu vadhātteṣāṃ suduḥkhitaḥ.
13. saḥ duḥkhavaśam āpannaḥ tu asamañjasasutaḥ tadā
cukrośa paramārtaḥ tu vadhāt teṣām suduḥkhitaḥ
13. saḥ asamañjasasutaḥ tadā tu duḥkhavaśam āpannaḥ
tu teṣām vadhāt paramārtaḥ suduḥkhitaḥ cukrośa
13. He, the son of Asamañjasa (Anśumān), being overwhelmed by grief (duḥkha), then cried out, deeply afflicted and exceedingly sorrowful due to their slaying.
यज्ञियं च हयं तत्र चरन्तमविदूरतः ।
ददर्श पुरुषव्याघ्रो दुःखशोकसमन्वितः ॥१४॥
14. yajñiyaṃ ca hayaṃ tatra carantamavidūrataḥ ,
dadarśa puruṣavyāghro duḥkhaśokasamanvitaḥ.
14. yajñiyam ca hayam tatra carantam avidūrataḥ |
dadarśa puruṣavyāghraḥ duḥkhaśokasammanvitaḥ
14. duḥkhaśokasammanvitaḥ puruṣavyāghraḥ tatra
avidūrataḥ yajñiyam ca hayam carantam dadarśa
14. Overwhelmed with sorrow and grief, the tiger among men (puruṣa) saw a sacrificial (yajña) horse grazing not far away there.
ददर्श पुरुषव्याघ्रो कर्तुकामो जलक्रियाम् ।
सलिलार्थी महातेजा न चापश्यज्जलाशयम् ॥१५॥
15. dadarśa puruṣavyāghro kartukāmo jalakriyām ,
salilārthī mahātejā na cāpaśyajjalāśayam.
15. dadarśa puruṣavyāghraḥ kartukāmaḥ jalakriyām
| salilārthī mahātejāḥ na ca apaśyat jalāśayam
15. puruṣavyāghraḥ kartukāmaḥ jalakriyām dadarśa
mahātejāḥ salilārthī ca na jalāśayam apaśyat
15. The tiger among men (puruṣa) desired to perform water rites (jalakriyā). The greatly radiant one, seeking water, looked, but did not see any reservoir.
विसार्य निपुणां दृष्टिं ततो ऽपश्यत् खगाधिपम् ।
पितॄणां मातुलं राम सुपर्णमनिलोपमम् ॥१६॥
16. visārya nipuṇāṃ dṛṣṭiṃ tato'paśyat khagādhipam ,
pitṝṇāṃ mātulaṃ rāma suparṇamanilopamam.
16. visārya nipuṇām dṛṣṭim tataḥ apaśyat khagādhipam
| pitṝṇām mātulam rāma suparṇam anilopamam
16. rāma tataḥ nipuṇām dṛṣṭim visārya khagādhipam
pitṝṇām mātulam anilopamam suparṇam apaśyat
16. Then, O Rāma, after casting his keen gaze, he saw Suparṇa, the lord of birds and the maternal uncle of the ancestors, who was like the wind.
स चैनमब्रवीद्वाक्यं वैनतेयो महाबलः ।
मा शुचः पुरुषव्याघ्र वधो ऽयं लोकसंमतः ॥१७॥
17. sa cainamabravīdvākyaṃ vainateyo mahābalaḥ ,
mā śucaḥ puruṣavyāghra vadho'yaṃ lokasaṃmataḥ.
17. sa ca enam abravīt vākyam vainateyaḥ mahābalaḥ |
mā śucaḥ puruṣavyāghra vadhaḥ ayam lokasaṃmataḥ
17. ca saḥ mahābalaḥ vainateyaḥ enam vākyam abravīt
puruṣavyāghra mā śucaḥ ayam vadhaḥ lokasaṃmataḥ
17. And that mighty Vainateya (Garuda) spoke this statement to him: "Do not grieve, O tiger among men (puruṣa)! This killing is approved by the world."
कपिलेनाप्रमेयेन दग्धा हीमे महाबलाः ।
सलिलं नार्हसि प्राज्ञ दातुमेषां हि लौकिकम् ॥१८॥
18. kapilenāprameyena dagdhā hīme mahābalāḥ ,
salilaṃ nārhasi prājña dātumeṣāṃ hi laukikam.
18. kapilena aprameyena dagdhā hi ime mahābalāḥ
salilam na arhasi prājña dātum eṣām hi laukikam
18. prājña aprameyena kapilena hi ime mahābalāḥ
dagdhāḥ eṣām laukikam salilam dātum na arhasi
18. These immensely powerful ones were indeed incinerated by the immeasurable Kapila. O wise one, you should not offer them ordinary water (for the deceased).
गङ्गा हिमवतो ज्येष्ठा दुहिता पुरुषर्षभ ।
भस्मराशीकृतानेतान्पावयेल् लोकपावनी ॥१९॥
19. gaṅgā himavato jyeṣṭhā duhitā puruṣarṣabha ,
bhasmarāśīkṛtānetānpāvayel lokapāvanī.
19. gaṅgā himavataḥ jyeṣṭhā duhitā puruṣarṣabha
bhasmarāśīkṛtān etān pāvayet lokapāvanī
19. puruṣarṣabha gaṅgā himavataḥ jyeṣṭhā duhitā
sā lokapāvanī etān bhasmarāśīkṛtān pāvayet
19. O best among men (puruṣarṣabha), Gaṅgā is the eldest daughter of Himavat. She, the purifier of the worlds, should purify these (ancestors) who have been reduced to piles of ashes.
तया क्लिन्नमिदं भस्म गङ्गया लोककान्तया ।
षष्टिं पुत्रसहस्राणि स्वर्गलोकं नयिष्यति ॥२०॥
20. tayā klinnamidaṃ bhasma gaṅgayā lokakāntayā ,
ṣaṣṭiṃ putrasahasrāṇi svargalokaṃ nayiṣyati.
20. tayā klinnam idam bhasma gaṅgayā lokakāntayā
ṣaṣṭim putrasahasrāṇi svargalokam nayiṣyati
20. tayā lokakāntayā gaṅgayā klinnam idam bhasma
ṣaṣṭim putrasahasrāṇi svargalokam nayiṣyati
20. This ash, moistened by that Gaṅgā, who is beloved of the worlds, will lead the sixty thousand sons to the heavenly realm (svargaloka).
गच्छ चाश्वं महाभाग संगृह्य पुरुषर्षभ ।
यज्ञं पैतामहं वीर निर्वर्तयितुमर्हसि ॥२१॥
21. gaccha cāśvaṃ mahābhāga saṃgṛhya puruṣarṣabha ,
yajñaṃ paitāmahaṃ vīra nirvartayitumarhasi.
21. gaccha ca aśvam mahābhāga saṃgṛhya puruṣarṣabha
yajñam paitāmaham vīra nirvartayitum arhasi
21. mahābhāga puruṣarṣabha vīra ca gaccha aśvam
saṃgṛhya paitāmaham yajñam nirvartayitum arhasi
21. And go, O greatly fortunate one (mahābhāga), O best among men (puruṣarṣabha), having retrieved the horse. O hero, you should complete the ancestral ritual (yajña).
सुपर्णवचनं श्रुत्वा सो ऽंशुमानतिवीर्यवान् ।
त्वरितं हयमादाय पुनरायान्महायशाः ॥२२॥
22. suparṇavacanaṃ śrutvā so'ṃśumānativīryavān ,
tvaritaṃ hayamādāya punarāyānmahāyaśāḥ.
22. suparṇa-vacanam śrutvā saḥ aṃśumān ativīryavān
tvaritam hayam ādāya punaḥ āyāt mahāyaśāḥ
22. suparṇa-vacanam śrutvā,
ativīryavān mahāyaśāḥ saḥ aṃśumān,
tvaritam hayam ādāya,
punaḥ āyāt.
22. Hearing Suparṇa's words, the exceedingly valiant and highly renowned Aṃśumān swiftly took the horse and returned.
ततो राजानमासाद्य दीक्षितं रघुनन्दन ।
न्यवेदयद् यथावृत्तं सुपर्णवचनं तथा ॥२३॥
23. tato rājānamāsādya dīkṣitaṃ raghunandana ,
nyavedayad yathāvṛttaṃ suparṇavacanaṃ tathā.
23. tataḥ rājānam āsādya dīkṣitam raghunandana
nyavedayat yathāvṛttam suparṇa-vacanam tathā
23. raghunandana,
tataḥ dīkṣitam rājānam āsādya,
yathāvṛttam tathā suparṇa-vacanam nyavedayat.
23. O scion of Raghu, he then approached the king, who was consecrated for the (yajña) ritual, and reported both what had transpired and Suparṇa's message.
तच्छ्रुत्वा घोरसंकाशं वाक्यमंशुमतो नृपः ।
यज्ञं निर्वर्तयामास यथाकल्पं यथाविधि ॥२४॥
24. tacchrutvā ghorasaṃkāśaṃ vākyamaṃśumato nṛpaḥ ,
yajñaṃ nirvartayāmāsa yathākalpaṃ yathāvidhi.
24. tat śrutvā ghora-saṃkāśam vākyam aṃśumataḥ nṛpaḥ
yajñam nirvartayām āsa yathā-kalpam yathā-vidhi
24. nṛpaḥ,
aṃśumataḥ ghora-saṃkāśam tat vākyam śrutvā,
yajñam yathā-kalpam yathā-vidhi nirvartayām āsa.
24. Upon hearing that terrifying message from Aṃśumān, the king completed the (yajña) sacrifice in accordance with the prescribed rituals and procedures.
स्वपुरं चागमच्छ्रीमानिष्टयज्ञो महीपतिः ।
गङ्गायाश्चागमे राजा निश्चयं नाध्यगच्छत ॥२५॥
25. svapuraṃ cāgamacchrīmāniṣṭayajño mahīpatiḥ ,
gaṅgāyāścāgame rājā niścayaṃ nādhyagacchata.
25. sva-puram ca āgamat śrīmān iṣṭa-yajñaḥ mahī-patiḥ
gaṅgāyāḥ ca āgame rājā niścayam na adhyagacchat
25. śrīmān iṣṭa-yajñaḥ mahī-patiḥ ca sva-puram āgamat.
rājā ca gaṅgāyāḥ āgame niścayam na adhyagacchat.
25. And the glorious king, having completed the (yajña) sacrifice, returned to his own city. However, regarding the arrival of the Gaṅgā, the king could not find a clear resolution.
अगत्वा निश्चयं राजा कालेन महता महान् ।
त्रिंशद्वर्षसहस्राणि राज्यं कृत्वा दिवं गतः ॥२६॥
26. agatvā niścayaṃ rājā kālena mahatā mahān ,
triṃśadvarṣasahasrāṇi rājyaṃ kṛtvā divaṃ gataḥ.
26. agatvā niścayam rājā kālena mahatā mahān
triṃśadvarṣasahasrāṇi rājyam kṛtvā divam gataḥ
26. rājā mahān niścayam agatvā mahatā kālena

26. The great king, without having made a definite decision, ruled for thirty thousand years and then departed to heaven.
