1. After they had inquired about each other's well-being at their mutual meeting, and at the end of the conversation, Sumati spoke these words to the great sage.
इमौ कुमारौ भद्रं ते देवतुल्यपराक्रमौ ।
गजसिंहगती वीरौ शार्दूलवृषभोपमौ ॥२॥

2. "May there be good fortune for you! These two youths possess valor equal to that of gods, their gait is like that of an elephant and a lion, they are heroes resembling tigers and bulls,

अश्विनाविव रूपेण समुपस्थितयौवनौ ॥३॥

3. ...with wide eyes like lotus leaves, carrying swords, quivers, and bows, resembling the two Ashvins in their appearance, and having just reached the prime of their youth.
यदृच्छयैव गां प्राप्तौ देवलोकादिवामरौ ।
कथं पद्भ्यामिह प्राप्तौ किमर्थं कस्य वा मुने ॥४॥
4. yadṛcchayaiva gāṃ prāptau devalokādivāmarau ,
kathaṃ padbhyāmiha prāptau kimarthaṃ kasya vā mune.

4. muṇe,

4. These two, who appear like immortals descended from the divine realm and have come to earth by sheer chance, how did they arrive here on foot? For what purpose, O sage, and whose sons are they?
भूषयन्ताविमं देशं चन्द्रसूर्याविवाम्बरम् ।
परस्परस्य सदृशौ प्रमाणेङ्गितचेष्टितैः ॥५॥
5. bhūṣayantāvimaṃ deśaṃ candrasūryāvivāmbaram ,
parasparasya sadṛśau pramāṇeṅgitaceṣṭitaiḥ.

5. They adorn this land just as the moon and the sun adorn the sky, resembling each other in their bearing, gestures, and deeds.
किमर्थं च नरश्रेष्ठौ संप्राप्तौ दुर्गमे पथि ।
वरायुधधरौ वीरौ श्रोतुमिच्छामि तत्त्वतः ॥६॥
6. kimarthaṃ ca naraśreṣṭhau saṃprāptau durgame pathi ,
varāyudhadharau vīrau śrotumicchāmi tattvataḥ.

varāyudhadharau vīrau śrotum icchāmi tattvataḥ

6. And for what purpose, O best among men (naraśreṣṭhau), have you two heroes (vīrau), wielding excellent weapons, arrived on this difficult path? I wish to hear the truth (tattvataḥ) of it.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा यथावृत्तं न्यवेदयत् ।
सिद्धाश्रमनिवासं च राक्षसानां वधं तथा ॥७॥
7. tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā yathāvṛttaṃ nyavedayat ,
siddhāśramanivāsaṃ ca rākṣasānāṃ vadhaṃ tathā.

7. Having heard his words, he reported the events as they had transpired, including their stay at Siddhashrama and the slaying of the Rākṣasas.
विश्वामित्रवचः श्रुत्वा राजा परमहर्षितः ।
अतिथी परमौ प्राप्तौ पुत्रौ दशरथस्य तौ ।
पूजयामास विधिवत् सत्कारार्हौ महाबलौ ॥८॥
8. viśvāmitravacaḥ śrutvā rājā paramaharṣitaḥ ,
atithī paramau prāptau putrau daśarathasya tau ,
pūjayāmāsa vidhivat satkārārhau mahābalau.

8. Having heard Viśvāmitra's words, the king was greatly delighted. He duly honored those two excellent guests, the sons of Daśaratha, who had arrived, for they were worthy of hospitality and possessed great strength.
ततः परमसत्कारं सुमतेः प्राप्य राघवौ ।
उष्य तत्र निशामेकां जग्मतुर्मिथिलां ततः ॥९॥
9. tataḥ paramasatkāraṃ sumateḥ prāpya rāghavau ,
uṣya tatra niśāmekāṃ jagmaturmithilāṃ tataḥ.

9. Thereafter, having received great hospitality from Sumati, the two Raghavas, after staying there for one night, proceeded to Mithila.
तां दृष्ट्वा मुनयः सर्वे जनकस्य पुरीं शुभाम् ।
साधु साध्विति शंसन्तो मिथिलां समपूजयन् ॥१०॥
10. tāṃ dṛṣṭvā munayaḥ sarve janakasya purīṃ śubhām ,
sādhu sādhviti śaṃsanto mithilāṃ samapūjayan.
10. tām dṛṣṭvā munayaḥ sarve janakasya purīm śubhām
sādhu sādhu iti śaṃsantaḥ mithilām samapūjayan

10. Upon seeing that beautiful city of Janaka, all the sages, exclaiming 'Excellent! Excellent!', praised and honored Mithila.
मिथिलोपवने तत्र आश्रमं दृश्य राघवः ।
पुराणं निर्जनं रम्यं पप्रच्छ मुनिपुंगवम् ॥११॥
11. mithilopavane tatra āśramaṃ dṛśya rāghavaḥ ,
purāṇaṃ nirjanaṃ ramyaṃ papraccha munipuṃgavam.

11. There, in Mithila's grove, Rāghava saw an ancient, deserted, but charming hermitage (āśrama). He then inquired of the chief of sages.
श्रीमदाश्रमसंकाशं किं न्विदं मुनिवर्जितम् ।
श्रोतुमिच्छामि भगवन् कस्यायं पूर्व आश्रमः ॥१२॥
12. śrīmadāśramasaṃkāśaṃ kiṃ nvidaṃ munivarjitam ,
śrotumicchāmi bhagavan kasyāyaṃ pūrva āśramaḥ.
12. śrīmat āśramasaṃkāśam kim nu idam munivarjitam
śrotum icchāmi bhagavan kasya ayam pūrva āśramaḥ
12. bhagavan kim nu idam śrīmat āśramasaṃkāśam
munivarjitam kasya ayam pūrva āśramaḥ śrotum icchāmi
12. O revered one, what is this glorious-looking hermitage (āśrama) that is devoid of sages? I desire to hear whose ancient hermitage (āśrama) this once was.
तच्छ्रुता राघवेणोक्तं वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदः ।
प्रत्युवाच महातेजा विश्वमित्रो महामुनिः ॥१३॥
13. tacchrutā rāghaveṇoktaṃ vākyaṃ vākyaviśāradaḥ ,
pratyuvāca mahātejā viśvamitro mahāmuniḥ.
13. tat śrutvā rāghaveṇa uktam vākyam vākyaviśāradaḥ
| pratyuvāca mahātejāḥ viśvāmitraḥ mahāmuniḥ
13. śrutvā tat vākyam rāghaveṇa uktam,
vākyaviśāradaḥ mahātejāḥ mahāmuniḥ viśvāmitraḥ pratyuvāca.
13. Having heard that speech (vākya) spoken by Rāghava, the great sage (mahāmuni) Viśvāmitra, who was expert in discourse and highly effulgent, replied.
हन्त ते कथयिष्यामि शृणु तत्त्वेन राघव ।
यस्यैतदाश्रमपदं शप्तं कोपान्महात्मना ॥१४॥
14. hanta te kathayiṣyāmi śṛṇu tattvena rāghava ,
yasyaitadāśramapadaṃ śaptaṃ kopānmahātmanā.
14. hanta te kathayiṣyāmi śṛṇu tattvena rāghava |
yasya etat āśramapadam śaptam kopāt mahātmanā
14. hanta rāghava,
te tattvena kathayiṣyāmi,
śṛṇu.
etat āśramapadam yasya [āśīt],
(tat) mahātmanā kopāt śaptam.
14. Indeed, O Rāghava, I will tell you the truth (tattva); listen! This hermitage (āśramapada), whose it is, was cursed out of anger by a great soul (mahātman).
गौतमस्य नरश्रेष्ठ पूर्वमासीन्महात्मनः ।
आश्रमो दिव्यसंकाशः सुरैरपि सुपूजितः ॥१५॥
15. gautamasya naraśreṣṭha pūrvamāsīnmahātmanaḥ ,
āśramo divyasaṃkāśaḥ surairapi supūjitaḥ.
15. gautamasya naraśreṣṭha pūrvam āsīn mahātmanaḥ
| āśramaḥ divyasaṃkāśaḥ suraiḥ api supūjitaḥ
15. naraśreṣṭha,
pūrvam mahātmanaḥ gautamasya āśramaḥ āsīn.
[saḥ] divyasaṃkāśaḥ,
suraiḥ api supūjitaḥ [ca].
15. O best among men (naraśreṣṭha), formerly, this hermitage (āśrama) belonged to the great-souled (mahātman) Gautama. It was splendid like a divine (divyasaṃkāśa) abode and was highly revered even by the gods (sura).
स चेह तप आतिष्ठदहल्यासहितः पुरा ।
वर्षपूगान्यनेकानि राजपुत्र महायशः ॥१६॥
16. sa ceha tapa ātiṣṭhadahalyāsahitaḥ purā ,
varṣapūgānyanekāni rājaputra mahāyaśaḥ.
16. saḥ ca iha tapaḥ ātiṣṭhat ahalyāsahitaḥ purā
| varṣapūgān anekāni rājaputra mahāyaśas
16. rājarajaputra mahāyaśas,
ca purā saḥ ahalyāsahitaḥ iha anekāni varṣapūgān tapaḥ ātiṣṭhat.
16. And here, O greatly renowned prince (rājaputra), he, accompanied by Ahalya, formerly performed penance (tapas) for many years.
तस्यान्तरं विदित्वा तु सहस्राक्षः शचीपतिः ।
मुनिवेषधरो ऽहल्यामिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१७॥
17. tasyāntaraṃ viditvā tu sahasrākṣaḥ śacīpatiḥ ,
muniveṣadharo'halyāmidaṃ vacanamabravīt.
17. tasya antaram viditvā tu sahasrākṣaḥ śacīpatiḥ
muniveṣadharaḥ ahalyām idam vacanam abravīt
17. sahasrākṣaḥ śacīpatiḥ muniveṣadharaḥ tu tasya

17. Recognizing this opportunity (antara), the thousand-eyed Indra (sahasrākṣa), husband of Śacī, assumed the disguise of a sage and spoke these words to Ahalya.
ऋतुकालं प्रतीक्षन्ते नार्थिनः सुसमाहिते ।
संगमं त्वहमिच्छामि त्वया सह सुमध्यमे ॥१८॥
18. ṛtukālaṃ pratīkṣante nārthinaḥ susamāhite ,
saṃgamaṃ tvahamicchāmi tvayā saha sumadhyame.
18. ṛtukālam pratīkṣante na arthinaḥ susamāhite
saṅgamam tu aham icchāmi tvayā saha sumadhyame
18. susamāhite arthinaḥ ṛtukālam na pratīkṣante
sumadhyame aham tu tvayā saha saṅgamam icchāmi
18. O well-composed one (susamāhite), those who are desirous (arthin) do not wait for the proper season. I, however, wish for union (saṅgama) with you, O slender-waisted one (sumadhyame).
मुनिवेषं सहस्राक्षं विज्ञाय रघुनन्दन ।
मतिं चकार दुर्मेधा देवराजकुतूहलात् ॥१९॥
19. muniveṣaṃ sahasrākṣaṃ vijñāya raghunandana ,
matiṃ cakāra durmedhā devarājakutūhalāt.
19. muniveṣam sahasrākṣam vijñāya raghunandana
matim cakāra durmedhā devarājakutūhalāt
19. raghunandana durmedhā muniveṣam sahasrākṣam

19. O descendent of Raghu (raghunandana), having recognized the thousand-eyed Indra (sahasrākṣa) in the disguise of a sage, the foolish Ahalya (durmedhā) made up her mind out of curiosity about the king of gods.
अथाब्रवीत् सुरश्रेष्ठं कृतार्थेनान्तरात्मना ।
कृतार्थो ऽसि सुरश्रेष्ठ गच्छ शीघ्रमितः प्रभो ।
आत्मानं मां च देवेश सर्वदा रक्ष मानदः ॥२०॥
20. athābravīt suraśreṣṭhaṃ kṛtārthenāntarātmanā ,
kṛtārtho'si suraśreṣṭha gaccha śīghramitaḥ prabho ,
ātmānaṃ māṃ ca deveśa sarvadā rakṣa mānadaḥ.
20. atha abravīt suraśreṣṭham kṛtārthena
antarātmanā kṛtārthaḥ asi suraśreṣṭha
gaccha śīghram itaḥ prabho ātmānam
mām ca deveśa sarvadā rakṣa mānadaḥ
20. atha kṛtārthena antarātmanā suraśreṣṭham
abravīt suraśreṣṭha (tvam) kṛtārthaḥ
asi prabho itaḥ śīghram gaccha deveśa
mānadaḥ (tvam) ātmānam mām ca sarvadā rakṣa
20. Then, with a fulfilled inner self (ātman), she spoke to the best of gods: 'You are gratified, O best of gods! Go quickly from here, O lord! O lord of gods (deveśa), you who bestow honor (mānada), always protect yourself and me.'
इन्द्रस्तु प्रहसन् वाक्यमहल्यामिदमब्रवीत् ।
सुश्रोणि परितुष्टो ऽस्मि गमिष्यामि यथागतम् ॥२१॥
21. indrastu prahasan vākyamahalyāmidamabravīt ,
suśroṇi parituṣṭo'smi gamiṣyāmi yathāgatam.
21. indraḥ tu prahasan vākyam ahalyām idam abravīt
suśroṇi parituṣṭaḥ asmi gamiṣyāmi yathāgatam
21. indraḥ tu prahasan idam vākyam ahalyām abravīt

21. Indra, laughing, then said these words to Ahalya: "O beautiful one, I am fully satisfied; I shall depart the way I came."
एवं संगम्य तु तया निश्चक्रामोटजात्ततः ।
स संभ्रमात्त्वरन् राम शङ्कितो गौतमं प्रति ॥२२॥
22. evaṃ saṃgamya tu tayā niścakrāmoṭajāttataḥ ,
sa saṃbhramāttvaran rāma śaṅkito gautamaṃ prati.
22. evam saṅgamya tu tayā niścakrāma uṭajāt tataḥ saḥ
sambhramāt tvaran rāma śaṅkitaḥ gautamam prati
22. evam tayā saṅgamya tu tataḥ uṭajāt saḥ niścakrāma

22. Having thus united with her, he (Indra) then emerged from the hermitage. He, O Rama, was apprehensive concerning Gautama, and hurried away in agitation.
गौतमं स ददर्शाथ प्रविशन्तं महामुनिम् ।
देवदानवदुर्धर्षं तपोबलसमन्वितम् ।
तीर्थोदकपरिक्लिन्नं दीप्यमानमिवानलम् ।
गृहीतसमिधं तत्र सकुशं मुनिपुङ्गवम् ॥२३॥
23. gautamaṃ sa dadarśātha praviśantaṃ mahāmunim ,
devadānavadurdharṣaṃ tapobalasamanvitam ,
tīrthodakapariklinnaṃ dīpyamānamivānalam ,
gṛhītasamidhaṃ tatra sakuśaṃ munipuṅgavam.
23. gautamam saḥ dadarśa atha praviśantam mahāmunim
devādānavadurDHARṢam tapobalasamanvitam
tīrthodakapariklinnam dīpyamānam iva analam
gṛhītasamidham tatra sakuśam munipuṅgavam
23. saḥ atha gautamam mahāmunim praviśantam
devadānavadurDHARṢam tapobalasamanvitam
tīrthodakapariklinnam dīpyamānam iva analam tatra
gṛhītasamidham sakuśam munipuṅgavam dadarśa
23. He (Indra) then saw the great sage Gautama entering there, who was difficult for even gods and demons to overpower, endowed with the strength of his asceticism (tapas), drenched with holy water, shining like fire, and holding sacrificial fuel along with kuśa grass – indeed, the foremost of sages.
दृष्ट्वा सुरपतिस्त्रस्तो
विषण्णवदनो ऽभवत् ॥२४॥
24. dṛṣṭvā surapatistrasto
viṣaṇṇavadano'bhavat.

24. Having seen him (Gautama), the lord of gods (Indra) became terrified and dejected in countenance.
अथ दृष्ट्वा सहस्राक्षं मुनिवेषधरं मुनिः ।
दुर्वृत्तं वृत्तसंपन्नो रोषाद्वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२५॥
25. atha dṛṣṭvā sahasrākṣaṃ muniveṣadharaṃ muniḥ ,
durvṛttaṃ vṛttasaṃpanno roṣādvacanamabravīt.
25. atha dṛṣṭvā sahasrākṣam muniveṣadharam muniḥ
durvṛttam vṛttasampannaḥ roṣāt vacanam abravīt
25. atha muniḥ vṛttasampannaḥ muniveṣadharam

25. Then, the sage (Gautama), who was endowed with good conduct, having seen the ill-behaved, thousand-eyed (Indra) who was disguised as a sage, spoke words out of anger.
मम रूपं समास्थाय कृतवानसि दुर्मते ।
अकर्तव्यमिदं यस्माद्विफलस्त्वं भविष्यति ॥२६॥
26. mama rūpaṃ samāsthāya kṛtavānasi durmate ,
akartavyamidaṃ yasmādviphalastvaṃ bhaviṣyati.
26. mama rūpam samāsthāya kṛtavān asi durmate
akartavyam idam yasmāt viphalaḥ tvam bhaviṣyati
26. durmate yasmāt mama rūpam samāsthāya idam
akartavyam kṛtavān asi tvam viphalaḥ bhaviṣyati
26. O ill-minded one, because you have done this forbidden act by assuming my form, you will become fruitless (viphala).
गौतमेनैवमुक्तस्य सरोषेण महात्मना ।
पेततुर्वृषणौ भूमौ सहस्राक्षस्य तत्क्षणात् ॥२७॥
27. gautamenaivamuktasya saroṣeṇa mahātmanā ,
petaturvṛṣaṇau bhūmau sahasrākṣasya tatkṣaṇāt.
27. gautamena evam uktasya saroṣeṇa mahātmanā
petatuḥ vṛṣaṇau bhūmau sahasrākṣasya tatkṣaṇāt
27. saroṣeṇa mahātmanā gautamena evam uktasya

27. Immediately after he was thus spoken to by the great-souled (mahātman) and enraged Gautama, the two testicles of the thousand-eyed (Indra) fell to the ground.
तथा शप्त्वा स वै शक्रं भार्यामपि च शप्तवान् ।
इह वर्षसहस्राणि बहूनि त्वं निवत्स्यसि ॥२८॥
28. tathā śaptvā sa vai śakraṃ bhāryāmapi ca śaptavān ,
iha varṣasahasrāṇi bahūni tvaṃ nivatsyasi.
28. tathā śaptvā sa vai śakram bhāryām api ca śaptavān
iha varṣasahasrāṇi bahūni tvam nivatsyasi
28. sa tathā śakram śaptvā vai ca bhāryām api śaptavān
[uvāca] tvam iha bahūni varṣasahasrāṇi nivatsyasi
28. Having thus cursed Indra, he (Gautama) also cursed his wife, (saying): 'Here, you will reside for many thousands of years.'
वायुभक्षा निराहारा तप्यन्ती भस्मशायिनी ।
अदृश्या सर्वभूतानामाश्रमे ऽस्मिन्निवत्स्यसि ॥२९॥
29. vāyubhakṣā nirāhārā tapyantī bhasmaśāyinī ,
adṛśyā sarvabhūtānāmāśrame'sminnivatsyasi.

adṛśyā sarvabhūtānām āśrame asmin nivatsyasi
29. asmin āśrame vāyubhakṣā nirāhārā tapyantī

29. You will reside in this hermitage (āśrama), subsisting on air, without food, performing severe austerities, sleeping on ashes, and remaining invisible to all beings.
यदा चैतद्वनं घोरं रामो दशरथात्मजः ।
आगमिष्यति दुर्धर्षस्तदा पूता भविष्यसि ॥३०॥
30. yadā caitadvanaṃ ghoraṃ rāmo daśarathātmajaḥ ,
āgamiṣyati durdharṣastadā pūtā bhaviṣyasi.
30. yadā ca etat vanam ghoram rāmaḥ daśarathātmajaḥ
āgamiṣyati durdharṣaḥ tadā pūtā bhaviṣyasi
30. ca yadā daśarathātmajaḥ durdharṣaḥ rāmaḥ etat
ghoram vanam āgamiṣyati tadā pūtā bhaviṣyasi
30. And when Rama, the unconquerable son of Dasharatha, comes to this formidable forest, then you will become purified.
तस्यातिथ्येन दुर्वृत्ते लोभमोहविवर्जिता ।
मत्सकाशे मुदा युक्ता स्वं वपुर्धारयिष्यसि ॥३१॥
31. tasyātithyena durvṛtte lobhamohavivarjitā ,
matsakāśe mudā yuktā svaṃ vapurdhārayiṣyasi.
31. tasya ātithyena durvṛtte lobhamohavivarjitā
mat sakāśe mudā yuktā svam vapuḥ dhārayiṣyasi
31. durvṛtte tasya ātithyena lobhamohavivarjitā
mudā yuktā mat sakāśe svam vapuḥ dhārayiṣyasi
31. O you of wicked conduct, through hospitality to him, freed from greed and delusion, you will joyfully regain your own form in my presence.
एवमुक्त्वा महातेजा गौतमो दुष्टचारिणीम् ।
इममाश्रममुत्सृज्य सिद्धचारणसेविते ।
हिमवच्छिखरे रम्ये तपस्तेपे महातपाः ॥३२॥
32. evamuktvā mahātejā gautamo duṣṭacāriṇīm ,
imamāśramamutsṛjya siddhacāraṇasevite ,
himavacchikhare ramye tapastepe mahātapāḥ.
32. evam uktvā mahātejāḥ gautamaḥ
duṣṭacāriṇīm imam āśramam utsṛjya
siddhacāraṇasevite himavat
śikhare ramye tapaḥ tepe mahātapāḥ
32. mahātejāḥ mahātapāḥ gautamaḥ
duṣṭacāriṇīm evam uktvā imam āśramam
utsṛjya siddhacāraṇasevite
ramye himavat śikhare tapaḥ tepe
32. Having thus spoken to her of wicked conduct, Gautama, the greatly effulgent and great ascetic, abandoned this hermitage (āśrama). He then performed severe austerities (tapas) on a beautiful peak of the Himalayas, a place frequented by Siddhas and Charaṇas.
