तस्मिंस्तु पुरुषव्याघ्रे निष्क्रामति कृताञ्जलौ ।
आर्तशब्दो हि संजज्ञे स्त्रीणामन्तःपुरे महान् ॥१॥
1. tasmiṃstu puruṣavyāghre niṣkrāmati kṛtāñjalau ,
ārtaśabdo hi saṃjajñe strīṇāmantaḥpure mahān.

1. But when that tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra) was departing, with hands folded in reverence (kṛtāñjali), indeed, a great cry of distress arose from the women in the inner palace.
अनाथस्य जनस्यास्य दुर्बलस्य तपस्विनः ।
यो गतिं शरणं चासीत् स नाथः क्व नु गच्छति ॥२॥
2. anāthasya janasyāsya durbalasya tapasvinaḥ ,
yo gatiṃ śaraṇaṃ cāsīt sa nāthaḥ kva nu gacchati.
2. anāthasya janasya asya durbalasya tapasvinaḥ yaḥ
gatim śaraṇam ca āsīt sa nāthaḥ kva nu gacchati
2. asya anāthasya durbalasya tapasvinaḥ janasya yaḥ gatim ca śaraṇam āsīt,
saḥ nāthaḥ kva nu gacchati?
2. "Where indeed does that protector (nātha) now go, he who was the recourse and refuge of this masterless, weak, and suffering (tapasvin) people?"
न क्रुध्यत्यभिशस्तो ऽपि क्रोधनीयानि वर्जयन् ।
क्रुद्धान्प्रसादयन् सर्वान् समदुःखः क्व गच्छति ॥३॥
3. na krudhyatyabhiśasto'pi krodhanīyāni varjayan ,
kruddhānprasādayan sarvān samaduḥkhaḥ kva gacchati.
3. na krudhyati abhiśastaḥ api krodhanīyāni varjayan
kruddhān prasādayan sarvān samaduḥkhaḥ kva gacchati
3. na abhiśastaḥ api krudhyati krodhanīyāni varjayan
kruddhān sarvān prasādayan samaduḥkhaḥ kva gacchati
3. One who does not become angry even when accused, who avoids situations that provoke anger, who appeases all angry individuals, and who shares in the suffering of others – where can such a person go (wrong or face misfortune)?
कौसल्यायां महातेजा यथा मातरि वर्तते ।
तथा यो वर्तते ऽस्मासु महात्मा क्व नु गच्छति ॥४॥
4. kausalyāyāṃ mahātejā yathā mātari vartate ,
tathā yo vartate'smāsu mahātmā kva nu gacchati.

4. Just as the greatly resplendent one (Rama) behaves towards his mother Kaushalya, where can a great soul (mahātmā) who behaves similarly towards us go (wrong or face misfortune)?
कैकेय्या क्लिश्यमानेन राज्ञा संचोदितो वनम् ।
परित्राता जनस्यास्य जगतः क्व नु गच्छति ॥५॥
5. kaikeyyā kliśyamānena rājñā saṃcodito vanam ,
paritrātā janasyāsya jagataḥ kva nu gacchati.
5. kaikeyyā kliśyamānena rājñā samcoditaḥ vanam
paritrātā janasya asya jagataḥ kva nu gacchati
5. kaikeyyā kliśyamānena rājñā vanam samcoditaḥ

5. Where can he, who was tormented by Kaikeyi and sent to the forest by the king (Dasharatha), and who is the protector of the people of this world, possibly go (wrong or astray)?
अहो निश्चेतनो राजा जीवलोकस्य संप्रियम् ।
धर्म्यं सत्यव्रतं रामं वनवासो प्रवत्स्यति ॥६॥
6. aho niścetano rājā jīvalokasya saṃpriyam ,
dharmyaṃ satyavrataṃ rāmaṃ vanavāso pravatsyati.
6. aho niścetanaḥ rājā jīvalokasya sampriyam
dharmyam satyavratam rāmam vanavāsaḥ pravatsyati
6. aho niścetanaḥ rājā vanavāsaḥ jīvalokasya

6. Alas, how senseless the king is! For forest exile will cause Rama - who is beloved by all living beings, righteous (dharma), and steadfast in his vow of truth - to go into exile.
इति सर्वा महिष्यस्ता विवत्सा इव धेनवः ।
रुरुदुश्चैव दुःखार्ताः सस्वरं च विचुक्रुशुः ॥७॥
7. iti sarvā mahiṣyastā vivatsā iva dhenavaḥ ,
ruruduścaiva duḥkhārtāḥ sasvaraṃ ca vicukruśuḥ.
7. iti sarvāḥ mahiṣyaḥ tāḥ vivatsāḥ iva dhenavaḥ
ruruduḥ ca eva duḥkhārtāḥ sasvaram ca vicukruśuḥ
7. iti tāḥ sarvāḥ mahiṣyaḥ duḥkhārtāḥ vivatsāḥ
dhenavaḥ iva ca ruruduḥ eva ca sasvaram vicukruśuḥ
7. Thus, all those queens, afflicted by sorrow, wept and wailed loudly, just like cows whose calves have been separated.
स तमन्तःपुरे घोरमार्तशब्दं महीपतिः ।
पुत्रशोकाभिसंतप्तः श्रुत्वा चासीत् सुदुःखितः ॥८॥
8. sa tamantaḥpure ghoramārtaśabdaṃ mahīpatiḥ ,
putraśokābhisaṃtaptaḥ śrutvā cāsīt suduḥkhitaḥ.
8. saḥ tam antaḥpure ghoram ārtśabdam mahīpatiḥ
putraśokābhisaṃtaptaḥ śrutvā ca āsīt suduḥkhitaḥ
8. saḥ mahīpatiḥ putraśokābhisaṃtaptaḥ antaḥpure

8. Having heard that terrible cry of distress in the inner chambers, the king (mahīpatiḥ), already deeply tormented by grief for his son, became exceedingly sorrowful.
नाग्निहोत्राण्यहूयन्त सूर्यश्चान्तरधीयत ।
व्यसृजन् कवलान्नागा गावो वत्सान्न पाययन् ॥९॥
9. nāgnihotrāṇyahūyanta sūryaścāntaradhīyata ,
vyasṛjan kavalānnāgā gāvo vatsānna pāyayan.
9. na agnihotrāṇi ahūyanta sūryaḥ ca antaradhīyata
vyasṛjan kavalān nāgāḥ gāvaḥ vatsān na pāyayān
9. agnihotrāṇi na ahūyanta ca sūryaḥ antaradhīyata
nāgāḥ kavalān vyasṛjan gāvaḥ ca vatsān na pāyayān
9. The fire rituals (agnihotra) were not performed, and the sun became obscured. Serpents (nāga) abandoned their mouthfuls of food, and cows did not allow their calves to suckle.
त्रिशङ्कुर्लोहिताङ्गश्च बृहस्पतिबुधावपि ।
दारुणाः सोममभ्येत्य ग्रहाः सर्वे व्यवस्थिताः ॥१०॥
10. triśaṅkurlohitāṅgaśca bṛhaspatibudhāvapi ,
dāruṇāḥ somamabhyetya grahāḥ sarve vyavasthitāḥ.
10. triśaṅkuḥ lohitāṅgaḥ ca bṛhaspatibudhau api
dāruṇāḥ somam abhyetya grahāḥ sarve vyavasthitāḥ
10. triśaṅkuḥ ca lohitāṅgaḥ api bṛhaspatibudhau
sarve dāruṇāḥ grahāḥ somam abhyetya vyavasthitāḥ
10. Triśanku and Mars (Lohitāṅga), as well as Jupiter (Bṛhaspati) and Mercury (Budha), all dreadful planets, stood ominously after approaching the Moon (Soma).
नक्षत्राणि गतार्चींषि ग्रहाश्च गततेजसः ।
विशाखाश्च सधूमाश्च नभसि प्रचकाशिरे ॥११॥
11. nakṣatrāṇi gatārcīṃṣi grahāśca gatatejasaḥ ,
viśākhāśca sadhūmāśca nabhasi pracakāśire.
11. nakṣatrāṇi gatārcīṃṣi grahāḥ ca gatatejasaḥ
viśākhāḥ ca sadhūmāḥ ca nabhasi pracakāśire

11. The stars had lost their brilliance, and the planets their luster. Even the constellation Viśākhā appeared smoky as they shone in the sky.
अकस्मान्नागरः सर्वो जनो दैन्यमुपागमत् ।
आहारे वा विहारे वा न कश्चिदकरोन्मनः ॥१२॥
12. akasmānnāgaraḥ sarvo jano dainyamupāgamat ,
āhāre vā vihāre vā na kaścidakaronmanaḥ.
12. akasmāt nāgaraḥ sarvaḥ janaḥ dainyam upāgamat
āhāre vā vihāre vā na kaścit akarot manaḥ
12. akasmāt sarvaḥ nāgaraḥ janaḥ dainyam upāgamat
āhāre vā vihāre vā kaścit manaḥ na akarot
12. Suddenly, all the city dwellers were overcome with misery. No one felt like eating or engaging in recreation.
बाष्पपर्याकुलमुखो राजमार्गगतो जनः ।
न हृष्टो लक्ष्यते कश्चित् सर्वः शोकपरायणः ॥१३॥
13. bāṣpaparyākulamukho rājamārgagato janaḥ ,
na hṛṣṭo lakṣyate kaścit sarvaḥ śokaparāyaṇaḥ.
13. bāṣpaparyākulamukhaḥ rājamārgagataḥ janaḥ na
hṛṣṭaḥ lakṣyate kaścit sarvaḥ śokaparāyaṇaḥ
13. rājamārgagataḥ janaḥ bāṣpaparyākulamukhaḥ
kaścit na hṛṣṭaḥ lakṣyate sarvaḥ śokaparāyaṇaḥ
13. People walking on the main road had faces agitated by tears. No one appeared joyful; everyone was devoted to sorrow.
न वाति पवनः शीतो न शशी सौम्यदर्शनः ।
न सूर्यस्तपते लोकं सर्वं पर्याकुलं जगत् ॥१४॥
14. na vāti pavanaḥ śīto na śaśī saumyadarśanaḥ ,
na sūryastapate lokaṃ sarvaṃ paryākulaṃ jagat.
14. na vāti pavanaḥ śītaḥ na śaśī saumyadarśanaḥ
na sūryaḥ tapate lokam sarvam paryākulam jagat
14. śītaḥ pavanaḥ na vāti śaśī na saumyadarśanaḥ
sūryaḥ lokam na tapate sarvam jagat paryākulam
14. The cool wind does not blow, nor does the moon appear gentle. The sun does not warm the world. The entire universe is troubled.
अनर्थिनः सुताः स्त्रीणां भर्तारो भ्रातरस्तथा ।
सर्वे सर्वं परित्यज्य राममेवान्वचिन्तयन् ॥१५॥
15. anarthinaḥ sutāḥ strīṇāṃ bhartāro bhrātarastathā ,
sarve sarvaṃ parityajya rāmamevānvacintayan.
15. anarthinaḥ sutāḥ strīṇāṃ bhartāraḥ bhrātaraḥ tathā
sarve sarvam parityajya rāmam eva anvacintayan
15. strīṇāṃ sutāḥ bhartāraḥ bhrātaraḥ tathā anarthinaḥ

15. Even the sons, husbands, and brothers of women, having no other worldly pursuits, all abandoned everything and thought solely of Rama.
ये तु रामस्य सुहृदः सर्वे ते मूढचेतसः ।
शोकभारेण चाक्रान्ताः शयनं न जुहुस्तदा ॥१६॥
16. ye tu rāmasya suhṛdaḥ sarve te mūḍhacetasaḥ ,
śokabhāreṇa cākrāntāḥ śayanaṃ na juhustadā.
16. ye tu rāmasya suhṛdaḥ sarve te mūḍhacetasaḥ
śokabhāreṇa ca ākrāntāḥ śayanam na juhuḥ tadā
16. ye tu rāmasya suhṛdaḥ te sarve mūḍhacetasaḥ

16. But all those who were friends of Rama, their minds were bewildered. Overwhelmed by the burden of grief, they did not leave their beds then.
ततस्त्वयोध्या रहिता महात्मना पुरंदरेणेव मही सपर्वता ।
चचाल घोरं भयभारपीडिता सनागयोधाश्वगणा ननाद च ॥१७॥
17. tatastvayodhyā rahitā mahātmanā puraṃdareṇeva mahī saparvatā ,
cacāla ghoraṃ bhayabhārapīḍitā sanāgayodhāśvagaṇā nanāda ca.
17. tataḥ tu ayodhyā rahitā mahātmanā
purandareṇa iva mahī saparvatā
cacāla ghoram bhayabhārapīḍitā
sanāgayodhāśvagaṇā nanāda ca
17. tataḥ tu mahātmanā rahitā ayodhyā
purandareṇa iva saparvatā mahī
ghoram bhayabhārapīḍitā
sanāgayodhāśvagaṇā cacāla ca nanāda
17. Then, Ayodhya, deprived of the great-souled (mahātman) Rama, like the earth with its mountains when afflicted by Purandara, trembled terribly. Oppressed by the burden of fear, and with its elephants, warriors, and horses, it cried out.
