अवधूय च तां बुद्धिं बभूवावस्थितस्तदा ।
जगाम चापरां चिन्तां सीतां प्रति महाकपिः ॥१॥
1. avadhūya ca tāṃ buddhiṃ babhūvāvasthitastadā ,
jagāma cāparāṃ cintāṃ sītāṃ prati mahākapiḥ.

1. And having discarded that thought, he became calm. The great monkey (Hanuman) then turned his attention to another thought concerning Sītā.
न रामेण वियुक्ता सा स्वप्तुमर्हति भामिनी ।
न भोक्तुं नाप्यलंकर्तुं न पानमुपसेवितुम् ॥२॥
2. na rāmeṇa viyuktā sā svaptumarhati bhāminī ,
na bhoktuṃ nāpyalaṃkartuṃ na pānamupasevitum.
2. na rāmeṇa viyuktā sā svaptum arhati bhāminī na
bhoktum na api alaṅkartum na pānam upasevitum
2. That splendid lady (Sītā), separated from Rāma, does not deserve to sleep, nor to eat, nor to adorn herself, nor to partake in beverages.
नान्यं नरमुपस्थातुं सुराणामपि चेश्वरम् ।
न हि रामसमः कश्चिद्विद्यते त्रिदशेष्वपि ।
अन्येयमिति निश्चित्य पानभूमौ चचार सः ॥३॥
3. nānyaṃ naramupasthātuṃ surāṇāmapi ceśvaram ,
na hi rāmasamaḥ kaścidvidyate tridaśeṣvapi ,
anyeyamiti niścitya pānabhūmau cacāra saḥ.
3. न अन्यम् नरम् उपस्थातुम् सुराणाम्
अपि च ईश्वरम् न हि रामसमः कश्चित्
विद्यते त्रिदशेषु अपि अन्या
इयम् इति निश्चित्य पानभूमौ चचार सः
3. सः इयम् अन्या इति निश्चित्य पानभूमौ चचारहि रामसमः कश्चित् त्रिदशेषु अपि न विद्यतेअन्यम् नरम् अपि च सुराणाम् ईश्वरम् उपस्थातुम् न।
3. Having determined that 'this is not she,' he (Rāvaṇa) wandered in the drinking hall. For (Sītā) would not approach any other man, nor even the lord of the gods, since indeed, no one among the immortals is equal to Rāma.
क्रीडितेनापराः क्लान्ता गीतेन च तथा पराः ।
नृत्तेन चापराः क्लान्ताः पानविप्रहतास्तथा ॥४॥
4. krīḍitenāparāḥ klāntā gītena ca tathā parāḥ ,
nṛttena cāparāḥ klāntāḥ pānaviprahatāstathā.
4. क्रीडितेन अपराः क्लान्ताः गीतेन च तथा पराः
नृत्तेन च अपराः क्लान्ताः पानविप्रहताः तथा
4. अपराः क्रीडितेन क्लान्ताःतथा च पराः गीतेनच अपराः नृत्तेन क्लान्ताःतथा पानविप्रहताः।
4. Some women were tired from playing, and similarly others from singing. Still others were exhausted from dancing, and similarly, some were overcome by drink.
मुरजेषु मृदङ्गेषु पीठिकासु च संस्थिताः ।
तथास्तरणमुख्य्येषु संविष्टाश्चापराः स्त्रियः ॥५॥
5. murajeṣu mṛdaṅgeṣu pīṭhikāsu ca saṃsthitāḥ ,
tathāstaraṇamukhyyeṣu saṃviṣṭāścāparāḥ striyaḥ.
5. मुरजेषु मृदङ्गेषु पीठिकासु च संस्थिताः तथा
आस्तरणमुख्येषु संविष्टाः च अपराः स्त्रियः
5. अपराः स्त्रियः मुरजेषु मृदङ्गेषु च पीठिकासु संस्थिताःतथा च आस्तरणमुख्येषु संविष्टाः।
5. Some women were resting on drums (murajas), clay drums (mṛdaṅgas), and on low seats. Similarly, other women were seated on excellent couches.
अङ्गनानां सहस्रेण भूषितेन विभूषणैः ।
रूपसंलापशीलेन युक्तगीतार्थभाषिणा ॥६॥
6. aṅganānāṃ sahasreṇa bhūṣitena vibhūṣaṇaiḥ ,
rūpasaṃlāpaśīlena yuktagītārthabhāṣiṇā.
6. अङ्गनानाम् सहस्रेण भूषितेन विभूषणैः
रूपसंलापशीलेन युक्तगीतार्थभाषिणा

6. The drinking hall (was furnished) with a thousand women, adorned with ornaments, whose nature was to engage in charming conversations, and who spoke words appropriate to their songs.
देशकालाभियुक्तेन युक्तवाक्याभिधायिना ।
रताभिरतसंसुप्तं ददर्श हरियूथपः ॥७॥
7. deśakālābhiyuktena yuktavākyābhidhāyinā ,
ratābhiratasaṃsuptaṃ dadarśa hariyūthapaḥ.

7. The leader of the monkeys (Hanuman), acting suitably according to the circumstances of time and place and speaking appropriate words [to himself], observed [Ravana] deeply asleep, immersed in sensual pleasures.
तासां मध्ये महाबाहुः शुशुभे राक्षसेश्वरः ।
गोष्ठे महति मुख्यानां गवां मध्ये यथा वृषः ॥८॥
8. tāsāṃ madhye mahābāhuḥ śuśubhe rākṣaseśvaraḥ ,
goṣṭhe mahati mukhyānāṃ gavāṃ madhye yathā vṛṣaḥ.
8. tāsām madhye mahābāhuḥ śuśubhe rākṣaseśvaraḥ
goṣṭhe mahati mukhyānām gavām madhye yathā vṛṣaḥ

8. Among them, the mighty-armed lord of demons shone, just like a bull among the principal cows in a large cattle pen.
स राक्षसेन्द्रः शुशुभे ताभिः परिवृतः स्वयम् ।
करेणुभिर्यथारण्यं परिकीर्णो महाद्विपः ॥९॥
9. sa rākṣasendraḥ śuśubhe tābhiḥ parivṛtaḥ svayam ,
kareṇubhiryathāraṇyaṃ parikīrṇo mahādvipaḥ.
9. saḥ rākṣasendraḥ śuśubhe tābhiḥ parivṛtaḥ svayam
kareṇubhiḥ yathā araṇyam parikīrṇaḥ mahādvipaḥ
9. saḥ rākṣasendraḥ svayam tābhiḥ parivṛtaḥ śuśubhe
yathā mahādvipaḥ kareṇubhiḥ parikīrṇaḥ araṇyam
9. That lord of demons himself shone, surrounded by those women, just as a great elephant, encircled by female elephants, shines beautifully in a forest.
सर्वकामैरुपेतां च पानभूमिं महात्मनः ।
ददर्श कपिशार्दूलस्तस्य रक्षःपतेर्गृहे ॥१०॥
10. sarvakāmairupetāṃ ca pānabhūmiṃ mahātmanaḥ ,
dadarśa kapiśārdūlastasya rakṣaḥpatergṛhe.
10. sarvakāmaiḥ upetām ca pānabhūmiṃ mahātmanaḥ
dadarśa kapiśārdūlaḥ tasya rakṣaḥpateḥ gṛhe
10. kapiśārdūlaḥ tasya mahātmanaḥ rakṣaḥpateḥ
gṛhe sarvakāmaiḥ upetām pānabhūmiṃ ca dadarśa
10. The best of monkeys (Hanuman) observed in the house of that great-souled lord of rākṣasas a drinking place equipped with all desired amenities.
मृगाणां महिषाणां च वराहाणां च भागशः ।
तत्र न्यस्तानि मांसानि पानभूमौ ददर्श सः ॥११॥
11. mṛgāṇāṃ mahiṣāṇāṃ ca varāhāṇāṃ ca bhāgaśaḥ ,
tatra nyastāni māṃsāni pānabhūmau dadarśa saḥ.
11. mṛgāṇām mahiṣāṇām ca varāhāṇām ca bhāgaśaḥ
tatra nyastāni māṃsāni pānabhūmau dadarśa saḥ
11. saḥ tatra pānabhūmau mṛgāṇām mahiṣāṇām ca

11. He saw there, in the drinking hall, portions of meat from deer, buffaloes, and boars, laid out.
रौक्मेषु च विशलेषु भाजनेष्वर्धभक्षितान् ।
ददर्श कपिशार्दूल मयूरान् कुक्कुटांस्तथा ॥१२॥
12. raukmeṣu ca viśaleṣu bhājaneṣvardhabhakṣitān ,
dadarśa kapiśārdūla mayūrān kukkuṭāṃstathā.
12. raukmeṣu ca viśāleṣu bhājaneṣu ardhabhakṣitān
dadarśa kapiśārdūla mayūrān kukkuṭān tathā

12. The best of monkeys (kapiśārdūla) saw partially eaten peacocks and chickens in wide golden vessels.
वराहवार्ध्राणसकान्दधिसौवर्चलायुतान् ।
शल्यान्मृगमयूरांश्च हनूमानन्ववैक्षत ॥१३॥
13. varāhavārdhrāṇasakāndadhisauvarcalāyutān ,
śalyānmṛgamayūrāṃśca hanūmānanvavaikṣata.

13. Hanuman closely observed the porcupines and the deer and peacocks, as well as the boar and vārdhrāṇasaka meats prepared with curd and black salt.
कृकरान् विविधान् सिद्धांश्चकोरानर्धभक्षितान् ।
महिषानेकशल्यांश्च छागांश्च कृतनिष्ठितान् ।
लेख्यमुच्चावचं पेयं भोज्यानि विविधानि च ॥१४॥
14. kṛkarān vividhān siddhāṃścakorānardhabhakṣitān ,
mahiṣānekaśalyāṃśca chāgāṃśca kṛtaniṣṭhitān ,
lekhyamuccāvacaṃ peyaṃ bhojyāni vividhāni ca.

14. He saw various kinds of well-prepared partridges, partially eaten chakoras, buffaloes prepared with a single porcupine, and well-cooked goats, along with various written documents, drinks, and many kinds of food items.
तथाम्ललवणोत्तंसैर्विविधै रागषाडवैः ।
हार नूपुरकेयूरैरपविद्धैर्महाधनैः ॥१५॥
15. tathāmlalavaṇottaṃsairvividhai rāgaṣāḍavaiḥ ,
hāra nūpurakeyūrairapaviddhairmahādhanaiḥ.
15. tathā amlalavaṇottaṃsaiḥ vividhaiḥ rāgaṣāḍavaiḥ
hāra nūpurakeyūraiḥ apaviddhaiḥ mahādhanaiḥ
15. tathā vividhaiḥ amlalavaṇottaṃsaiḥ rāgaṣāḍavaiḥ
hāra nūpurakeyūraiḥ apaviddhaiḥ mahādhanaiḥ
15. Similarly, with various sour and salty appetizers, relishes, and six-flavored dishes, and with very valuable necklaces, anklets, and armlets scattered around.
पानभाजनविक्षिप्तैः फलैश्च विविधैरपि ।
कृतपुष्पोपहारा भूरधिकं पुष्यति श्रियम् ॥१६॥
16. pānabhājanavikṣiptaiḥ phalaiśca vividhairapi ,
kṛtapuṣpopahārā bhūradhikaṃ puṣyati śriyam.
16. pānabhājanavikṣiptaiḥ phalaiḥ ca vividhaiḥ api
kṛtapuṣpopahārā bhūḥ adhikam puṣyati śriyam
16. bhūḥ kṛtapuṣpopahārā vividhaiḥ phalaiḥ ca

16. With various fruits and scattered drinking vessels, the earth (bhū), adorned with flower offerings, greatly enhances its beauty.
तत्र तत्र च विन्यस्तैः सुश्लिष्टैः शयनासनैः ।
पानभूमिर्विना वह्निं प्रदीप्तेवोपलक्ष्यते ॥१७॥
17. tatra tatra ca vinyastaiḥ suśliṣṭaiḥ śayanāsanaiḥ ,
pānabhūmirvinā vahniṃ pradīptevopalakṣyate.
17. tatra tatra ca vinyastaiḥ suśliṣṭaiḥ śayanāsanaiḥ
pānabhūmiḥ vinā vahnim pradīptā iva upalakṣyate

17. And with comfortably arranged beds and seats placed here and there, the drinking hall appears as if brightly lit, even without a fire.
बहुप्रकारैर्विविधैर्वरसंस्कारसंस्कृतैः ।
मांसैः कुशलसंयुक्तैः पानभूमिगतैः पृथक् ॥१८॥
18. bahuprakārairvividhairvarasaṃskārasaṃskṛtaiḥ ,
māṃsaiḥ kuśalasaṃyuktaiḥ pānabhūmigataiḥ pṛthak.
18. bahuprākāraiḥ vividhaiḥ varasaṃskārasaṃskṛtaiḥ
māṃsaiḥ kuśalasaṃyuktaiḥ pānabhūmigataiḥ pṛthak

18. With many kinds of various meats, excellently seasoned and prepared, skillfully combined, and laid out separately in the drinking hall.
दिव्याः प्रसन्ना विविधाः सुराः कृतसुरा अपि ।
शर्करासवमाध्वीकाः पुष्पासवफलासवाः ।
वासचूर्णैश्च विविधैर्मृष्टास्तैस्तैः पृथक्पृथक् ॥१९॥
19. divyāḥ prasannā vividhāḥ surāḥ kṛtasurā api ,
śarkarāsavamādhvīkāḥ puṣpāsavaphalāsavāḥ ,
vāsacūrṇaiśca vividhairmṛṣṭāstaistaiḥ pṛthakpṛthak.

taiḥ taiḥ pṛthak pṛthak mṛṣṭāḥ
19. Divine, clear, and various kinds of liquor, even those prepared by celestials, along with sugarcane-juice-based and honey-based wines, and those made from flower and fruit juices, were separately mixed with various scented powders.
संतता शुशुभे भूमिर्माल्यैश्च बहुसंस्थितैः ।
हिरण्मयैश्च करकैर्भाजनैः स्फाटिकैरपि ।
जाम्बूनदमयैश्चान्यैः करकैरभिसंवृता ॥२०॥
20. saṃtatā śuśubhe bhūmirmālyaiśca bahusaṃsthitaiḥ ,
hiraṇmayaiśca karakairbhājanaiḥ sphāṭikairapi ,
jāmbūnadamayaiścānyaiḥ karakairabhisaṃvṛtā.
20. santatā śuśubhe bhūmiḥ mālyaiḥ ca
bahusaṃsthitaiḥ hiraṇmayaiḥ ca karakaiḥ
bhājanaiḥ sphāṭikaiḥ api jāmbūnadamyaiḥ
ca anyaiḥ karakaiḥ abhisaṃvṛtā
20. santatā bahusaṃsthitaiḥ mālyaiḥ ca
hiraṇmayaiḥ karakaiḥ sphāṭikaiḥ
bhājanaiḥ api ca anyaiḥ jāmbūnadamyaiḥ
karakaiḥ abhisaṃvṛtā bhūmiḥ śuśubhe
20. The ground, covered with numerous garlands, shone beautifully. It was also encompassed by golden pitchers, crystal vessels, and other pitchers made of Jambūnada gold.
राजतेषु च कुम्भेषु जाम्बूनदमयेषु च ।
पानश्रेष्ठं तदा भूरि कपिस्तत्र ददर्श ह ॥२१॥
21. rājateṣu ca kumbheṣu jāmbūnadamayeṣu ca ,
pānaśreṣṭhaṃ tadā bhūri kapistatra dadarśa ha.
21. rājateṣu ca kumbheṣu jāmbūnadamyaiṣu ca
pānaśreṣṭham tadā bhūri kapiḥ tatra dadarśa ha
21. tadā kapiḥ tatra rājateṣu kumbheṣu ca
jāmbūnadamyaiṣu ca pānaśreṣṭham bhūri dadarśa ha
21. There, the monkey (Hanuman) then saw a great quantity of the finest drinks in silver pitchers and also in those made of Jambūnada gold.
सो ऽपश्यच्छातकुम्भानि शीधोर्मणिमयानि च ।
राजतानि च पूर्णानि भाजनानि महाकपिः ॥२२॥
22. so'paśyacchātakumbhāni śīdhormaṇimayāni ca ,
rājatāni ca pūrṇāni bhājanāni mahākapiḥ.
22. saḥ apaśyat śātakuṁbhāni śīdhoḥ maṇimayāni
ca rājatāni ca pūrṇāni bhājanāni mahākapiḥ
22. saḥ mahākapiḥ śīdhoḥ śātakuṁbhāni maṇimayāni
ca rājatāni ca pūrṇāni bhājanāni apaśyat
22. That great monkey (Hanuman) saw golden vessels filled with liquor, and also jewel-studded ones, as well as silver vessels, all full.
क्व चिदर्धावशेषाणि क्व चित् पीतानि सर्वशः ।
क्व चिन्नैव प्रपीतानि पानानि स ददर्श ह ॥२३॥
23. kva cidardhāvaśeṣāṇi kva cit pītāni sarvaśaḥ ,
kva cinnaiva prapītāni pānāni sa dadarśa ha.
23. kva cit ardhāvaśeṣāṇi kva cit pītāni sarvaśaḥ
kva cit na eva prapītāni pānāni saḥ dadarśa ha
23. saḥ ha dadarśa pānāni kva cit ardhāvaśeṣāṇi kva

23. He saw drinks: some half-finished, some entirely consumed, and some not at all tasted.
क्व चिद्भक्ष्यांश्च विविधान् क्व चित् पानानि भागशः ।
क्व चिदन्नावशेषाणि पश्यन् वै विचचार ह ॥२४॥
24. kva cidbhakṣyāṃśca vividhān kva cit pānāni bhāgaśaḥ ,
kva cidannāvaśeṣāṇi paśyan vai vicacāra ha.
24. kva cit bhakṣyān ca vividhān kva cit pānāni bhāgaśaḥ
kva cit annāvaśeṣāṇi paśyan vai vicacāra ha
24. paśyan vai ha vicacāra kva cit vividhān bhakṣyān

24. Seeing various kinds of food, some partially eaten, drinks partially consumed, and some remaining food, he wandered around.
क्व चित् प्रभिन्नैः करकैः क्व चिदालोडितैर्घटैः ।
क्व चित् संपृक्तमाल्यानि जलानि च फलानि च ॥२५॥
25. kva cit prabhinnaiḥ karakaiḥ kva cidāloḍitairghaṭaiḥ ,
kva cit saṃpṛktamālyāni jalāni ca phalāni ca.

25. Sometimes there were broken pitchers, sometimes stirred-up pots, and sometimes waters and fruits mixed with garlands.
शयनान्यत्र नारीणां शून्यानि बहुधा पुनः ।
परस्परं समाश्लिष्य काश्चित् सुप्ता वराङ्गनाः ॥२६॥
26. śayanānyatra nārīṇāṃ śūnyāni bahudhā punaḥ ,
parasparaṃ samāśliṣya kāścit suptā varāṅganāḥ.
26. śayanāni atra nārīṇām śūnyāni bahudhā punaḥ
parasparam samāśliṣya kāścit suptāḥ varāṅganāḥ

26. Here, the women's beds were often empty; however, some beautiful women lay sleeping, embracing each other.
का चिच्च वस्त्रमन्यस्या अपहृत्योपगुह्य च ।
उपगम्याबला सुप्ता निद्राबलपराजिता ॥२७॥
27. kā cicca vastramanyasyā apahṛtyopaguhya ca ,
upagamyābalā suptā nidrābalaparājitā.

ca upagamya abalā suptā nidrābalaparājitā
27. abalā kā cit ca nidrābalaparājitā suptā upagamya

27. And one weak woman, overcome by the power of sleep, while asleep, drew near, took away another's garment, and embraced it.
तासामुच्छ्वासवातेन वस्त्रं माल्यं च गात्रजम् ।
नात्यर्थं स्पन्दते चित्रं प्राप्य मन्दमिवानिलम् ॥२८॥
28. tāsāmucchvāsavātena vastraṃ mālyaṃ ca gātrajam ,
nātyarthaṃ spandate citraṃ prāpya mandamivānilam.
28. tāsām ucchvāsavātena vastram mālyam ca gātrajam na
atyartham spandate citram prāpya mandam iva anilam
28. tāsām ucchvāsavātena gātrajam vastram ca mālyam na

28. The garments and garlands worn on the bodies of those women do not flutter much from the breeze of their breath. It is remarkable how they are hardly stirred, as if by a gentle wind.
चन्दनस्य च शीतस्य शीधोर्मधुरसस्य च ।
विविधस्य च माल्यस्य पुष्पस्य विविधस्य च ॥२९॥
29. candanasya ca śītasya śīdhormadhurasasya ca ,

29. And of cool sandalwood, and of sweet liquor, and of various garlands, and of various flowers.
बहुधा मारुतस्तत्र गन्धं विविधमुद्वहन् ।
स्नानानां चन्दनानां च धूपानां चैव मूर्छितः ।
प्रववौ सुरभिर्गन्धो विमाने पुष्पके तदा ॥३०॥
30. bahudhā mārutastatra gandhaṃ vividhamudvahan ,
snānānāṃ candanānāṃ ca dhūpānāṃ caiva mūrchitaḥ ,
pravavau surabhirgandho vimāne puṣpake tadā.

30. There, the wind, carrying various fragrances in many ways, became saturated with the aromas of bathings, sandal pastes, and incenses. Then, a fragrant scent wafted throughout the Puṣpaka aerial chariot.
श्यामावदातास्तत्रान्याः काश्चित् कृष्णा वराङ्गनाः ।
काश्चित् काञ्चनवर्णाङ्ग्यः प्रमदा राक्षसालये ॥३१॥
31. śyāmāvadātāstatrānyāḥ kāścit kṛṣṇā varāṅganāḥ ,
kāścit kāñcanavarṇāṅgyaḥ pramadā rākṣasālaye.
31. śyāmāvadātāḥ tatra anyāḥ kāścit kṛṣṇāḥ varāṅganāḥ
kāścit kāñcanavarṇāṅgyaḥ pramadāḥ rākṣasālaye

31. In that demon's palace, some of the beautiful women were of dusky and fair complexions, others were dark-skinned, and some enchanting ladies had golden complexions.
तासां निद्रावशत्वाच्च मदनेन विमूर्छितम् ।
पद्मिनीनां प्रसुप्तानां रूपमासीद् यथैव हि ॥३२॥
32. tāsāṃ nidrāvaśatvācca madanena vimūrchitam ,
padminīnāṃ prasuptānāṃ rūpamāsīd yathaiva hi.
32. tāsāṃ nidrāvaśatvāt ca madanena vimūrchitam
padminīnāṃ prasuptānāṃ rūpam āsīt yathā eva hi

32. Their appearance, subdued by sleep and swooning with passion, was indeed just like that of sleeping lotus flowers.
एवं सर्वमशेषेण रावणान्तःपुरं कपिः ।
ददर्श सुमहातेजा न ददर्श च जानकीम् ॥३३॥
33. evaṃ sarvamaśeṣeṇa rāvaṇāntaḥpuraṃ kapiḥ ,
dadarśa sumahātejā na dadarśa ca jānakīm.
33. evam sarvam aśeṣeṇa rāvaṇāntaḥpuram kapiḥ
dadarśa sumahātejāḥ na dadarśa ca jānakīm
33. evam sumahātejāḥ kapiḥ rāvaṇāntaḥpuram

33. Thus, the greatly radiant monkey (kapi) completely saw all of Rāvaṇa's inner palace, but he did not see Jānakī.
निरीक्षमाणश्च ततस्ताः स्त्रियः स महाकपिः ।
जगाम महतीं चिन्तां धर्मसाध्वसशङ्कितः ॥३४॥
34. nirīkṣamāṇaśca tatastāḥ striyaḥ sa mahākapiḥ ,
jagāma mahatīṃ cintāṃ dharmasādhvasaśaṅkitaḥ.
34. nirīkṣamāṇaḥ ca tataḥ tāḥ striyaḥ saḥ mahākapiḥ
jagāma mahatīm cintām dharmasādhvasaśaṅkitaḥ
34. ca tataḥ tāḥ striyaḥ nirīkṣamāṇaḥ saḥ mahākapiḥ
dharmasādhvasaśaṅkitaḥ mahatīm cintām jagāma
34. And then, that great monkey, observing those women, became greatly worried, apprehensive about the infringement of natural law (dharma).
परदारावरोधस्य प्रसुप्तस्य निरीक्षणम् ।
इदं खलु ममात्यर्थं धर्मलोपं करिष्यति ॥३५॥
35. paradārāvarodhasya prasuptasya nirīkṣaṇam ,
idaṃ khalu mamātyarthaṃ dharmalopaṃ kariṣyati.

khalu mama atyartham dharmalopam kariṣyati
35. Observing the sleeping women within another's private chambers will indeed constitute a great transgression of my intrinsic duty (dharma).
न हि मे परदाराणां दृष्टिर्विषयवर्तिनी ।
अयं चात्र मया दृष्टः परदारपरिग्रहः ॥३६॥
36. na hi me paradārāṇāṃ dṛṣṭirviṣayavartinī ,
ayaṃ cātra mayā dṛṣṭaḥ paradāraparigrahaḥ.
36. na hi me paradārāṇām dṛṣṭiḥ viṣayavartinī
ayam ca atra mayā dṛṣṭaḥ paradāraparigrahaḥ
36. Indeed, my gaze does not naturally fall upon other men's wives. Yet, here, the seizure of another's wife has been observed by me.
तस्य प्रादुरभूच्चिन्तापुनरन्या मनस्विनः ।
निश्चितैकान्तचित्तस्य कार्यनिश्चयदर्शिनी ॥३७॥
37. tasya prādurabhūccintāpunaranyā manasvinaḥ ,
niścitaikāntacittasya kāryaniścayadarśinī.
37. tasya prāduḥ abhūt cintā punar anyā manasvinaḥ
niścitāikāntacittasya kāryaniścayadarśinī
37. Another thought then arose for that noble-minded (manasvin) individual, whose mind was fixed and resolute, a thought which revealed the proper course of action.
कामं दृष्ट्वा मया सर्वा विश्वस्ता रावणस्त्रियः ।
न तु मे मनसः किं चिद्वैकृत्यमुपपद्यते ॥३८॥
38. kāmaṃ dṛṣṭvā mayā sarvā viśvastā rāvaṇastriyaḥ ,
na tu me manasaḥ kiṃ cidvaikṛtyamupapadyate.
38. kāmam dṛṣṭvā mayā sarvāḥ viśvastāḥ rāvaṇastriyaḥ
na tu me manasaḥ kim cit vaikṛtyam upapadyate
38. Though I have indeed seen all of Ravana's unsuspecting women, yet no mental perturbation whatsoever has arisen in my mind.
मनो हि हेतुः सर्वेषामिन्द्रियाणां प्रवर्तते ।
शुभाशुभास्ववस्थासु तच्च मे सुव्यवस्थितम् ॥३९॥
39. mano hi hetuḥ sarveṣāmindriyāṇāṃ pravartate ,
śubhāśubhāsvavasthāsu tacca me suvyavasthitam.
39. manaḥ hi hetuḥ sarveṣām indriyāṇām pravartate
śubhāśubhāsu avasthāsu tat ca me suvyavasthitam
39. hi manaḥ sarveṣām indriyāṇām śubhāśubhāsu
avasthāsu hetuḥ pravartate ca tat me suvyavasthitam
39. Indeed, the mind is the cause that directs all the senses in both auspicious and inauspicious circumstances, and that very mind (manas) of mine is well-controlled.
नान्यत्र हि मया शक्या वैदेही परिमार्गितुम् ।
स्त्रियो हि स्त्रीषु दृश्यन्ते सदा संपरिमार्गणे ॥४०॥
40. nānyatra hi mayā śakyā vaidehī parimārgitum ,
striyo hi strīṣu dṛśyante sadā saṃparimārgaṇe.
40. na anyatra hi mayā śakyā vaidehī parimārgitum
striyaḥ hi strīṣu dṛśyante sadā saṃparimārgaṇe
40. hi mayā anyatra vaidehī parimārgitum na śakyā
hi striyaḥ strīṣu sadā saṃparimārgaṇe dṛśyante
40. Indeed, Vaidehī (Sītā) cannot be searched for by me anywhere else, because women are always found among women when one is searching.
यस्य सत्त्वस्य या योनिस्तस्यां तत् परिमार्ग्यते ।
न शक्यं प्रमदा नष्टा मृगीषु परिमार्गितुम् ॥४१॥
41. yasya sattvasya yā yonistasyāṃ tat parimārgyate ,
na śakyaṃ pramadā naṣṭā mṛgīṣu parimārgitum.
41. yasya sattvasya yā yoniḥ tasyām tat parimārgyate
na śakyam pramadā naṣṭā mṛgīṣu parimārgitum
41. yasya sattvasya yā yoniḥ tat tasyām parimārgyate
naṣṭā pramadā mṛgīṣu parimārgitum na śakyam
41. Whatever creature (sattva) has a certain species (yoni), it is searched for within that species. It is not possible to search for a lost woman among female deer.
तदिदं मार्गितं तावच्छुद्धेन मनसा मया ।
रावणान्तःपुरं सरं दृश्यते न च जानकी ॥४२॥
42. tadidaṃ mārgitaṃ tāvacchuddhena manasā mayā ,
rāvaṇāntaḥpuraṃ saraṃ dṛśyate na ca jānakī.
42. tat idam mārgitaṃ tāvat śuddhena manasā mayā
rāvaṇāntaḥpuram sarvam dṛśyate na ca jānakī
42. tāvat idam rāvaṇāntaḥpuram sarvam mayā
śuddhena manasā mārgitaṃ dṛśyate ca jānakī na
42. Indeed, this much has been searched by me with a pure mind: the entire inner palace of Rāvaṇa has been seen, but Jānakī (Sītā) is not (seen).
देवगन्धर्वकन्याश्च नागकन्याश्च वीर्यवान् ।
अवेक्षमाणो हनुमान्नैवापश्यत जानकीम् ॥४३॥
43. devagandharvakanyāśca nāgakanyāśca vīryavān ,
avekṣamāṇo hanumānnaivāpaśyata jānakīm.
43. deva-gandharva-kanyāḥ ca nāga-kanyāḥ ca vīryavān
avekṣamāṇaḥ hanumān na eva apaśyat jānakīm
43. vīryavān hanumān deva-gandharva-kanyāḥ ca
nāga-kanyāḥ ca avekṣamāṇaḥ tām jānakīm na eva apaśyat
43. The mighty Hanumān, though observing the daughters of the devas (celestial beings), gandharvas, and nāgas, could not find Jānakī at all.
तामपश्यन् कपिस्तत्र पश्यंश्चान्या वरस्त्रियः ।
अपक्रम्य तदा वीरः प्रध्यातुमुपचक्रमे ॥४४॥
44. tāmapaśyan kapistatra paśyaṃścānyā varastriyaḥ ,
apakramya tadā vīraḥ pradhyātumupacakrame.
44. tām apaśyan kapiḥ tatra paśyan ca anyāḥ vara-striyaḥ
apakramya tadā vīraḥ pradhyātum upacakrame
44. tām apaśyan ca anyāḥ vara-striyaḥ paśyan kapiḥ

44. Not finding her (Sītā) there, even while seeing other excellent women, the heroic monkey (Hanumān) then withdrew and began to ponder deeply.
