तमुद्वीक्ष्य महाबाहुः पिङ्गाक्षं पुरतः स्थितम् ।
रोषेण महताविष्टो रावणो लोकरावणः ॥१॥

1. The mighty-armed (mahābāhu) Rāvaṇa, who made the worlds cry out (lokarāvaṇa), having seen him, the tawny-eyed (piṅgākṣa) one, standing before him, was overcome by great anger.
स राजा रोषताम्राक्षः प्रहस्तं मन्त्रिसत्तमम् ।
कालयुक्तमुवाचेदं वचो विपुलमर्थवत् ॥२॥
2. sa rājā roṣatāmrākṣaḥ prahastaṃ mantrisattamam ,
kālayuktamuvācedaṃ vaco vipulamarthavat.
2. saḥ rājā roṣatāmrākṣaḥ prahastam mantrisattamam
kālayuktam uvāca idam vacaḥ vipulam arthavat
2. roṣatāmrākṣaḥ saḥ rājā mantrisattamam prahastam

2. That king, whose eyes were red with anger, spoke these extensive, meaningful words, appropriate for the occasion, to Prahasta, the best of his ministers.
दुरात्मा पृच्छ्यतामेष कुतः किं वास्य कारणम् ।
वनभङ्गे च को ऽस्यार्थो राक्षसीनां च तर्जने ॥३॥
3. durātmā pṛcchyatāmeṣa kutaḥ kiṃ vāsya kāraṇam ,
vanabhaṅge ca ko'syārtho rākṣasīnāṃ ca tarjane.
3. durātmā pṛcchyatām eṣaḥ kutaḥ kim vā asya kāraṇam
vanabhaṅge ca kaḥ asya arthaḥ rākṣasīnām ca tarjane
3. durātmā eṣaḥ kutaḥ asya kim vā kāraṇam ca

3. "Let this evil-minded one be questioned: where is he from, and what is the reason for his actions? And what is his purpose in destroying the grove and intimidating the female rākṣasas?"
रावणस्य वचः श्रुत्वा प्रहस्तो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
समाश्वसिहि भद्रं ते न भीः कार्या त्वया कपे ॥४॥
4. rāvaṇasya vacaḥ śrutvā prahasto vākyamabravīt ,
samāśvasihi bhadraṃ te na bhīḥ kāryā tvayā kape.

samāśvasihi bhadram te na bhīḥ kāryā tvayā kape

4. Upon hearing Rāvaṇa's words, Prahasta spoke, saying: "Be comforted, may good fortune be with you; you, O monkey, need not fear."
यदि तावत्त्वमिन्द्रेण प्रेषितो रावणालयम् ।
तत्त्वमाख्याहि मा ते भूद्भयं वानर मोक्ष्यसे ॥५॥
5. yadi tāvattvamindreṇa preṣito rāvaṇālayam ,
tattvamākhyāhi mā te bhūdbhayaṃ vānara mokṣyase.
5. yadi tāvat tvam indreṇa preṣitaḥ rāvaṇālayam
tattvam ākhyāhi mā te bhūt bhayam vānara mokṣyase
5. yadi tāvat tvam indreṇa rāvaṇālayam preṣitaḥ (asi)
tattvam ākhyāhi vānara te bhayam mā bhūt mokṣyase
5. If you have indeed been sent by Indra to Rāvaṇa's abode, then tell the truth. Let no fear come upon you, O monkey; you will be set free.
यदि वैश्रवणस्य त्वं यमस्य वरुणस्य च ।
चारुरूपमिदं कृत्वा यमस्य वरुणस्य च ॥६॥
6. yadi vaiśravaṇasya tvaṃ yamasya varuṇasya ca ,
cārurūpamidaṃ kṛtvā yamasya varuṇasya ca.
6. yadi vaiśravaṇasya tvam yamasya varuṇasya ca
cārurūpam idam kṛtvā yamasya varuṇasya ca
6. yadi tvam vaiśravaṇasya yamasya varuṇasya ca,
idam cārurūpam kṛtvā yamasya varuṇasya ca (asi)
6. If you are of Vaiśravaṇa, Yama, and Varuṇa; or if, having assumed this charming form, you are of Yama and Varuṇa.
विष्णुना प्रेषितो वापि दूतो विजयकाङ्क्षिणा ।
न हि ते वानरं तेजो रूपमात्रं तु वानरम् ॥७॥
7. viṣṇunā preṣito vāpi dūto vijayakāṅkṣiṇā ,
na hi te vānaraṃ tejo rūpamātraṃ tu vānaram.
7. viṣṇunā preṣitaḥ vā api dūtaḥ vijayakāṅkṣiṇā
na hi te vānaram tejaḥ rūpamātram tu vānaram
7. vā api vijayakāṅkṣiṇā viṣṇunā preṣitaḥ dūtaḥ (asi).
hi te tejaḥ vānaram na.
tu rūpamātram vānaram.
7. Or if you are a messenger sent by Viṣṇu, who desires victory. For your might is not that of a mere monkey, though your outward form is just that of a monkey.
तत्त्वतः कथयस्वाद्य ततो वानर मोक्ष्यसे ।
अनृतं वदतश्चापि दुर्लभं तव जीवितम् ॥८॥
8. tattvataḥ kathayasvādya tato vānara mokṣyase ,
anṛtaṃ vadataścāpi durlabhaṃ tava jīvitam.
8. tattvataḥ kathayasva adya tataḥ vānara mokṣyase
anṛtam vadataḥ ca api durlabham tava jīvitam
8. vānara adya tattvataḥ kathayasva tataḥ mokṣyase
anṛtam vadataḥ ca api tava jīvitam durlabham
8. Speak the truth now, O monkey; then you will be released. For one who speaks falsehood, your life will be difficult to preserve.
अथ वा यन्निमित्तस्ते
प्रवेशो रावणालये ॥९॥
9. atha vā yannimittaste
praveśo rāvaṇālaye.
9. atha vā yat nimittaḥ
te praveśaḥ rāvaṇālaye
9. atha vā te rāvaṇālaye
praveśaḥ yat nimittaḥ
9. Or what is the reason for your entrance into Rāvaṇa's abode?
एवमुक्तो हरिवरस्तदा रक्षोगणेश्वरम् ।
अब्रवीन्नास्मि शक्रस्य यमस्य वरुणस्य वा ॥१०॥
10. evamukto harivarastadā rakṣogaṇeśvaram ,
abravīnnāsmi śakrasya yamasya varuṇasya vā.
10. evam uktaḥ harivaraḥ tadā rakṣogaṇeśvaram
abravīt na asmi śakrasya yamasya varuṇasya vā
10. evam uktaḥ harivaraḥ tadā rakṣogaṇeśvaram
abravīt śakrasya yamasya varuṇasya vā na asmi
10. Thus addressed, the best of monkeys then spoke to the lord of the rākṣasa multitude, saying: 'I am not an agent of Śakra, nor of Yama, nor of Varuṇa.'
धनदेन न मे सख्यं विष्णुना नास्मि चोदितः ।
जातिरेव मम त्वेषा वानरो ऽहमिहागतः ॥११॥
11. dhanadena na me sakhyaṃ viṣṇunā nāsmi coditaḥ ,
jātireva mama tveṣā vānaro'hamihāgataḥ.
11. dhanadena na me sakhyam viṣṇunā na asmi coditaḥ
jātiḥ eva mama tu eṣā vānaraḥ aham iha āgataḥ
11. me dhanadena sakhyam na viṣṇunā na asmi coditaḥ
tu eṣā mama jātiḥ eva aham vānaraḥ iha āgataḥ
11. I have no friendship with Dhanada (Kubera), nor was I sent by Viṣṇu. Indeed, this is simply my intrinsic nature (jāti): I am a monkey, and I have come here.
दर्शने राक्षसेन्द्रस्य दुर्लभे तदिदं मया ।
वनं राक्षसराजस्य दर्शनार्थे विनाशितम् ॥१२॥
12. darśane rākṣasendrasya durlabhe tadidaṃ mayā ,
vanaṃ rākṣasarājasya darśanārthe vināśitam.
12. darśane rākṣasendrasya durlabhe tat idam mayā
vanam rākṣasarājasya darśanārthe vināśitam
12. mayā rākṣasarājasya rākṣasendrasya durlabhe
darśanārthe darśane tat idam vanam vināśitam
12. This very forest was destroyed by me for the purpose of an audience with the king of rākṣasas, an audience that is difficult to obtain.
ततस्ते राक्षसाः प्राप्ता बलिनो युद्धकाङ्क्षिणः ।
रक्षणार्थं च देहस्य प्रतियुद्धा मया रणे ॥१३॥
13. tataste rākṣasāḥ prāptā balino yuddhakāṅkṣiṇaḥ ,
rakṣaṇārthaṃ ca dehasya pratiyuddhā mayā raṇe.
13. tataḥ te rākṣasāḥ prāptāḥ balinaḥ yuddhakāṅkṣiṇaḥ
rakṣaṇārtham ca dehasya pratiyuddhāḥ mayā raṇe
13. tataḥ te balinaḥ yuddhakāṅkṣiṇaḥ rākṣasāḥ prāptāḥ
ca mayā dehasya rakṣaṇārtham raṇe pratiyuddhāḥ
13. Then, those powerful rākṣasas, eager for battle, arrived. And for the protection of my body, they were fought back by me in combat.
अस्त्रपाशैर्न शक्यो ऽहं बद्धुं देवासुरैरपि ।
पितामहादेव वरो ममाप्येषो ऽभ्युपागतः ॥१४॥
14. astrapāśairna śakyo'haṃ baddhuṃ devāsurairapi ,
pitāmahādeva varo mamāpyeṣo'bhyupāgataḥ.
14. astrapāśaiḥ na śakyaḥ aham baddhum devāsuraiḥ api
pitāmahāt eva varaḥ mama api eṣaḥ abhyupāgataḥ
14. aham astrapāśaiḥ devāsuraiḥ api baddhum na śakyaḥ
ca eṣaḥ varaḥ pitāmahāt eva mama api abhyupāgataḥ
14. I cannot be bound by weapon-fetters, not even by gods and asuras. This boon has indeed been granted to me by Grandfather Brahmā himself.
राजानं द्रष्टुकामेन मयास्त्रमनुवर्तितम् ।
विमुक्तो अहमस्त्रेण राक्षसैस्त्वतिपीडितः ॥१५॥
15. rājānaṃ draṣṭukāmena mayāstramanuvartitam ,
vimukto ahamastreṇa rākṣasaistvatipīḍitaḥ.
15. rājānam draṣṭukāmena mayā astram anuvartitam
vimuktaḥ aham astreṇa rākṣasaiḥ tu atipīḍitaḥ
15. rājānam draṣṭukāmena mayā astram anuvartitam
aham astreṇa vimuktaḥ tu rākṣasaiḥ atipīḍitaḥ
15. Desiring to see the king (Rāvaṇa), I employed the (Brahmāstra) weapon. Though I was freed by the weapon's true power, I was severely tormented by the rākṣasas.
दूतो ऽहमिति विज्ञेयो राघवस्यामितौजसः ।
श्रूयतां चापि वचनं मम पथ्यमिदं प्रभो ॥१६॥
16. dūto'hamiti vijñeyo rāghavasyāmitaujasaḥ ,
śrūyatāṃ cāpi vacanaṃ mama pathyamidaṃ prabho.
16. dūtaḥ aham iti vijñeyaḥ rāghavasya amita-ojasaḥ
śrūyatām ca api vacanam mama pathyam idam prabho
16. prabho aham amita-ojasaḥ rāghavasya dūtaḥ iti
vijñeyaḥ ca mama idam pathyam vacanam api śrūyatām
16. Know that I am the messenger of Rāghava (Rāma), who possesses immeasurable valor. And, O lord, please hear this beneficial message of mine.
