अथ रात्र्यां प्रवृत्तायां शत्रुघ्नो भृगुनन्दनम् ।
पप्रच्छ च्यवनं विप्रं लवणस्य बलाबलम् ॥१॥

1. Then, as night commenced, Shatrughna inquired of the Brahmin Chyavana, the descendant of Bhrigu, regarding Lavana's strengths and weaknesses.
शूलस्य च बलं ब्रह्मन् के च पूर्वं निपातिताः ।
अनेन शूलमुखेन द्वन्द्वयुद्धमुपागताः ॥२॥
2. śūlasya ca balaṃ brahman ke ca pūrvaṃ nipātitāḥ ,
anena śūlamukhena dvandvayuddhamupāgatāḥ.

2. And, O (brahman), what is the strength of the trident? And who were those who, having previously engaged in a duel (dvandvayuddha), were struck down by this trident?
तस्य तद्भाषितं श्रुत्वा शत्रुघ्नस्य महात्मनः ।
प्रत्युवाच महातेजाश्च्यवनो रघुनन्दनम् ॥३॥
3. tasya tadbhāṣitaṃ śrutvā śatrughnasya mahātmanaḥ ,
pratyuvāca mahātejāścyavano raghunandanam.

3. Having heard that speech from the great-souled Shatrughna, the greatly effulgent Chyavana replied to the descendant of Raghu.
असंख्येयानि कर्माणि यान्यस्य पुरुषर्षभ ।
इक्ष्वाकुवंशप्रभवे यद्वृत्तं तच्छृणुष्व मे ॥४॥
4. asaṃkhyeyāni karmāṇi yānyasya puruṣarṣabha ,
ikṣvākuvaṃśaprabhave yadvṛttaṃ tacchṛṇuṣva me.
4. asaṃkhyeyāni karmāṇi yāni asya puruṣarṣabha
ikṣvākuvaṃśaprabhave yat vṛttam tat śṛṇuṣva me

4. O best among men (puruṣarṣabha), listen to me about his innumerable deeds (karma), and whatever has transpired concerning one born in the Ikshvaku dynasty.
अयोध्यायां पुरा राजा युवनाश्वसुतो बली ।
मान्धाता इति विख्यातस्त्रिषु लोकेषु वीर्यवान् ॥५॥
5. ayodhyāyāṃ purā rājā yuvanāśvasuto balī ,
māndhātā iti vikhyātastriṣu lokeṣu vīryavān.

5. In ancient times, in Ayodhya, there was a powerful and mighty king, the son of Yuvanashva, named Mandhata, who was renowned throughout the three worlds.
स कृत्वा पृथिवीं कृत्स्नां शासने पृथिवीपतिः ।
सुरलोकमथो जेतुमुद्योगमकरोन्नृपः ॥६॥
6. sa kṛtvā pṛthivīṃ kṛtsnāṃ śāsane pṛthivīpatiḥ ,
suralokamatho jetumudyogamakaronnṛpaḥ.
6. saḥ kṛtvā pṛthivīm kṛtsnām śāsane pṛthivīpatiḥ
suralokam atha jetum udyogam akarot nṛpaḥ
6. saḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ nṛpaḥ kṛtsnām pṛthivīm śāsane

6. Having brought the entire earth under his command, that king, the ruler of the earth, then undertook the endeavor to conquer the world of the gods.
इन्द्रस्य तु भयं तीव्रं सुराणां च महात्मनाम् ।
मान्धातरि कृतोद्योगे देवलोकजिगीषया ॥७॥
7. indrasya tu bhayaṃ tīvraṃ surāṇāṃ ca mahātmanām ,
māndhātari kṛtodyoge devalokajigīṣayā.
7. indrasya tu bhayam tīvram surāṇām ca mahātmanām
māndhātari kṛtodyoge devalokajigīṣayā
7. māndhātari devalokajigīṣayā kṛtodyoge tu

7. Indeed, intense fear arose in Indra and the great (mahātman) gods when Mandhata undertook the endeavor with the desire to conquer the world of the gods.
अर्धासनेन शक्रस्य राज्यार्धेन च पार्थिवः ।
वन्द्यमानः सुरगणैः प्रतिज्ञामध्यरोहत ॥८॥
8. ardhāsanena śakrasya rājyārdhena ca pārthivaḥ ,
vandyamānaḥ suragaṇaiḥ pratijñāmadhyarohata.

8. The king (pārthiva), being honored by the hosts of gods, accepted the terms by ascending to half of Indra's (śakra) throne and half of his kingdom.
तस्य पापमभिप्रायं विदित्वा पाकशासनः ।
सान्त्वपूर्वमिदं वाक्यमुवाच युवनाश्वजम् ॥९॥
9. tasya pāpamabhiprāyaṃ viditvā pākaśāsanaḥ ,
sāntvapūrvamidaṃ vākyamuvāca yuvanāśvajam.
9. tasya pāpam abhiprāyam viditvā pākaśāsanaḥ
sāntvapurvam idam vākyam uvāca yuvanaśvajam
9. pākaśāsanaḥ tasya pāpam abhiprāyam viditvā
sāntvapurvam idam vākyam yuvanaśvajam uvāca
9. Having understood his sinful intention, Indra (pākaśāsana) spoke these conciliatory words to Mandhāta, the son of Yuvanāśva.
राजा त्वं मानुषे लोके न तावत् पुरुषर्षभ ।
अकृत्वा पृथिवीं वश्यां देवराज्यमिहेच्छसि ॥१०॥
10. rājā tvaṃ mānuṣe loke na tāvat puruṣarṣabha ,
akṛtvā pṛthivīṃ vaśyāṃ devarājyamihecchasi.
10. rājā tvam mānuṣe loke na tāvat puruṣarṣabha
akṛtvā pṛthivīm vaśyām devarājyam iha icchasi
10. puruṣarṣabha tvam mānuṣe loke rājā pṛthivīm
vaśyām akṛtvā tāvat iha devarājyam icchasi
10. O best among men, you are a king in the human world. You desire the kingdom of the gods (devarājya) here, even though you have not yet brought the earth under your control.
यदि वीर समग्रा ते मेदिनी निखिला वशे ।
देवराज्यं कुरुष्वेह सभृत्यबलवाहनः ॥११॥
11. yadi vīra samagrā te medinī nikhilā vaśe ,
devarājyaṃ kuruṣveha sabhṛtyabalavāhanaḥ.
11. yadi vīra samagrā te medinī nikhilā vaśe
devarājyam kuruṣva iha sabhṛtyabalavāhanaḥ
11. vīra yadi te samagrā nikhilā medinī vaśe
sabhṛtyabalavāhanaḥ iha devarājyam kuruṣva
11. O hero, if your entire and whole earth is under your control, then establish the kingdom of the gods (devarājya) here, along with your servants, army, and mounts.
इन्द्रमेवं ब्रुवाणं तु मान्धाता वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
क्व मे शक्र प्रतिहतं शासनं पृथिवीतले ॥१२॥
12. indramevaṃ bruvāṇaṃ tu māndhātā vākyamabravīt ,
kva me śakra pratihataṃ śāsanaṃ pṛthivītale.
12. indram evam bruvāṇam tu māndhātā vākyam abravīt
kva me śakra pratihatam śāsanam pṛthivītale
12. tu māndhātā evam bruvāṇam indram vākyam abravīt
śakra me śāsanam pṛthivītale kva pratihatam
12. But Mandhāta spoke these words to Indra, who was speaking thus: 'O Śakra, where is my command (śāsana) obstructed on earth?'
तमुवाच सहस्राक्षो लवणो नाम राक्षसः ।
मधुपुत्रो मधुवने नाज्ञां ते कुरुते ऽनघ ॥१३॥
13. tamuvāca sahasrākṣo lavaṇo nāma rākṣasaḥ ,
madhuputro madhuvane nājñāṃ te kurute'nagha.
13. tam uvāca sahasrākṣaḥ lavaṇaḥ nāma rākṣasaḥ
madhuputraḥ madhuvane na ājñām te kurute anagha
13. sahasrākṣaḥ tam uvāca lavaṇaḥ nāma rākṣasaḥ
madhuputraḥ te ājñām madhuvane na kurute anagha
13. The thousand-eyed one (Indra) spoke to him: 'A demon (rākṣasa) named Lavaṇa, son of Madhu, does not obey your command in Madhuvana, O faultless one.'
तच्छ्रुत्वा विप्रियं घोरं सहस्राक्षेण भाषितम् ।
व्रीडितो ऽवाङ्मुखो राजा व्याहर्तुं न शशाक ह ॥१४॥
14. tacchrutvā vipriyaṃ ghoraṃ sahasrākṣeṇa bhāṣitam ,
vrīḍito'vāṅmukho rājā vyāhartuṃ na śaśāka ha.
14. tat śrutvā vipriyam ghoram sahasrākṣeṇa bhāṣitam
vrīḍitaḥ avāṅmukhaḥ rājā vyāhartum na śaśāka ha
14. saḥ rājā sahasrākṣeṇa bhāṣitam tat ghoram vipriyam
śrutvā vrīḍitaḥ avāṅmukhaḥ vyāhartum na śaśāka ha
14. Hearing those dreadful, unpleasant words spoken by the thousand-eyed one (Indra), the king became ashamed and downcast, unable to utter a word.
आमन्त्र्य तु सहस्राक्षं ह्रिया किं चिदवाङ्मुखः ।
पुनरेवागमच्छ्रीमानिमं लोकं नरेश्वरः ॥१५॥
15. āmantrya tu sahasrākṣaṃ hriyā kiṃ cidavāṅmukhaḥ ,
punarevāgamacchrīmānimaṃ lokaṃ nareśvaraḥ.
15. āmantrya tu sahasrākṣam hriyā kiñcit avāṅmukhaḥ
punaḥ eva āgamat śrīmān imam lokam nareśvaraḥ
15. nareśvaraḥ tu sahasrākṣam āmantrya hriyā kiñcit
avāṅmukhaḥ śrīmān punaḥ eva imam lokam āgamat
15. Having bid farewell to the thousand-eyed one (Indra), and still somewhat downcast out of shame, that glorious king of men returned to this world.
स कृत्वा हृदये ऽमर्षं सभृत्यबलवाहनः ।
आजगाम मधोः पुत्रं वशे कर्तुमनिन्दितः ॥१६॥
16. sa kṛtvā hṛdaye'marṣaṃ sabhṛtyabalavāhanaḥ ,
ājagāma madhoḥ putraṃ vaśe kartumaninditaḥ.
16. sa kṛtvā hṛdaye amarṣam sabhṛtyabalavāhanaḥ
ājagāma madhoḥ putram vaśe kartum aninditaḥ
16. saḥ aninditaḥ sabhṛtyabalavāhanaḥ hṛdaye
amarṣam kṛtvā madhoḥ putram vaśe kartum ājagāma
16. He, the blameless king, harboring resentment in his heart, came with his servants, army, and vehicles to subdue the son of Madhu.
स काङ्क्षमाणो लवणं युद्धाय पुरुषर्षभः ।
दूतं संप्रेषयामास सकाशं लवणस्य सः ॥१७॥
17. sa kāṅkṣamāṇo lavaṇaṃ yuddhāya puruṣarṣabhaḥ ,
dūtaṃ saṃpreṣayāmāsa sakāśaṃ lavaṇasya saḥ.
17. saḥ kāṅkṣamāṇaḥ lavaṇaṃ yuddhāya puruṣarṣabhaḥ
dūtaṃ saṃpreṣayāmāsa sakāśaṃ lavaṇasya saḥ
17. saḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ lavaṇaṃ yuddhāya kāṅkṣamāṇaḥ
dūtaṃ lavaṇasya sakāśaṃ saṃpreṣayāmāsa
17. That best among men, desiring battle with Lavaṇa, dispatched a messenger to Lavaṇa's presence.
स गत्वा विप्रियाण्याह बहूनि मधुनः सुतम् ।
वदन्तमेवं तं दूतं भक्षयामास राक्षसः ॥१८॥
18. sa gatvā vipriyāṇyāha bahūni madhunaḥ sutam ,
vadantamevaṃ taṃ dūtaṃ bhakṣayāmāsa rākṣasaḥ.
18. saḥ gatvā vipriyāṇi āha bahūni madhunaḥ sutam
vadantam evam tam dūtam bhakṣayāmāsa rākṣasaḥ
18. saḥ gatvā madhunaḥ sutam bahūni vipriyāṇi āha
evam vadantam tam dūtam rākṣasaḥ bhakṣayāmāsa
18. Having arrived, he spoke many harsh words to Lavaṇa, the son of Madhu. As the messenger was speaking thus, the demon devoured him.
चिरायमाणे दूते तु राजा क्रोधसमन्वितः ।
अर्दयामास तद् रक्षः शरवृष्ट्या समन्ततः ॥१९॥
19. cirāyamāṇe dūte tu rājā krodhasamanvitaḥ ,
ardayāmāsa tad rakṣaḥ śaravṛṣṭyā samantataḥ.
19. cirāyamāṇe dūte tu rājā krodhasamanvitaḥ
ardayāmāsa tat rakṣaḥ śaravṛṣṭyā samantataḥ
19. tu dūte cirāyamāṇe rājā krodhasamanvitaḥ
tat rakṣaḥ śaravṛṣṭyā samantataḥ ardayāmāsa
19. But while the messenger delayed, the king, filled with anger, attacked that demon from all sides with a shower of arrows.
ततः प्रहस्य लवणः शूलं जग्राह पाणिना ।
वधाय सानुबन्धस्य मुमोचायुधमुत्तमम् ॥२०॥
20. tataḥ prahasya lavaṇaḥ śūlaṃ jagrāha pāṇinā ,
vadhāya sānubandhasya mumocāyudhamuttamam.
20. tataḥ prahasya lavaṇaḥ śūlam jagrāha pāṇinā
vadhāya sānubandhasya mumoca āyudham uttamam
20. tataḥ lavaṇaḥ prahasya pāṇinā śūlam jagrāha
sānubandhasya vadhāya uttamam āyudham mumoca
20. Then Lavaṇa, laughing, seized his trident with his hand. He then hurled that supreme weapon for the destruction of (the king) along with his kinsmen/followers.
तच्छूलं दीप्यमानं तु सभृत्यबलवाहनम् ।
भस्मीकृत्य नृपं भूयो लवणस्यागमत् करम् ॥२१॥
21. tacchūlaṃ dīpyamānaṃ tu sabhṛtyabalavāhanam ,
bhasmīkṛtya nṛpaṃ bhūyo lavaṇasyāgamat karam.
21. तत् शूलम् दीप्यमानम् तु स-भृत्य-बल-वाहनम्
भस्मीकृत्य नृपम् भूयः लवणस्य आगमत् करम्
21. तत् दीप्यमानम् शूलम् स-भृत्य-बल-वाहनम्
नृपम् भस्मीकृत्य भूयः लवणस्य करम् आगमत्
21. That blazing spear, having reduced the king, along with his servants, army, and vehicles, to ashes, then returned to Lavana's hand.
एवं स राजा सुमहान् हतः सबलवाहनः ।
शूलस्य च बलं वीर अप्रमेयमनुत्तमम् ॥२२॥
22. evaṃ sa rājā sumahān hataḥ sabalavāhanaḥ ,
śūlasya ca balaṃ vīra aprameyamanuttamam.
22. एवम् स राजा सुमहान् हतः स-बल-वाहनः
शूलस्य च बलम् वीर अप्रमेयम् अनुत्तमम्
22. एवम् स सुमहान् राजा स-बल-वाहनः हतः च
वीर शूलस्य बलम् अप्रमेयम् अनुत्तमम्
22. Thus, that very great king, along with his army and vehicles, was slain. And, O hero, the power of that spear is immeasurable and unsurpassed.
श्वः प्रभाते तु लवणं वधिष्यसि न संशयः ।
अगृहीतायुधं क्षिप्रं ध्रुवो हि विजयस्तव ॥२३॥
23. śvaḥ prabhāte tu lavaṇaṃ vadhiṣyasi na saṃśayaḥ ,
agṛhītāyudhaṃ kṣipraṃ dhruvo hi vijayastava.
23. श्वः प्रभाते तु लवणम् वधिष्यसि न संशयः
अगृहीत-आयुधम् क्षिप्रम् ध्रुवः हि विजयः तव
23. श्वः प्रभाते तु लवणम् वधिष्यसि न संशयः हि
तव विजयः ध्रुवः अगृहीत-आयुधम् क्षिप्रम्
23. Tomorrow morning, you will certainly kill Lavana; there is no doubt. For your victory is assured if you (attack him) swiftly while he is unarmed.
