संदिश्य रामं नृपतिः श्वोभाविन्यभिषेचने ।
पुरोहितं समाहूय वसिष्ठमिदमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. saṃdiśya rāmaṃ nṛpatiḥ śvobhāvinyabhiṣecane ,

1. Having given instructions to Rama regarding the anointing ceremony (abhiṣecana) scheduled for the next day, the king, summoning the priest Vasiṣṭha, spoke this.
गच्छोपवासं काकुत्स्थं कारयाद्य तपोधन ।
श्रीयशोराज्यलाभाय वध्वा सह यतव्रतम् ॥२॥
2. gacchopavāsaṃ kākutsthaṃ kārayādya tapodhana ,
śrīyaśorājyalābhāya vadhvā saha yatavratam.
2. gaccha upavāsam kākutstham kārayā adya tapodhana
śrī yaśaḥ rājya lābhāya vadhvā saha yatavratam
2. tapodhana gaccha,
adya śrī yaśaḥ rājya lābhāya vadhvā saha yatavratam kākutstham upavāsam kārayā
2. "O ascetic (tapodhana), go, and today make Kakutstha, along with his wife, undertake a vow of fasting (upavāsa) for the attainment of prosperity, fame, and kingdom."
तथेति च स राजानमुक्त्वा वेदविदां वरः ।
स्वयं वसिष्ठो भगवान्ययौ रामनिवेशनम् ॥३॥
3. tatheti ca sa rājānamuktvā vedavidāṃ varaḥ ,
svayaṃ vasiṣṭho bhagavānyayau rāmaniveśanam.
3. tathā iti ca saḥ rājānam uktvā veda vidām varaḥ
svayam vasiṣṭhaḥ bhagavān yayau rāmaniveśanam
3. saḥ veda vidām varaḥ vasiṣṭhaḥ bhagavān tathā
iti rājānam uktvā ca svayam rāmaniveśanam yayau
3. And he, the eminent among those who know the Vedas, the venerable Vasiṣṭha, having said "So be it" to the king, himself went to Rama's abode.
स रामभवनं प्राप्य पाण्डुराभ्रघनप्रभम् ।
तिस्रः कक्ष्या रथेनैव विवेश मुनिसत्तमः ॥४॥
4. sa rāmabhavanaṃ prāpya pāṇḍurābhraghanaprabham ,
tisraḥ kakṣyā rathenaiva viveśa munisattamaḥ.
4. saḥ rāmabhavanam prāpya pāṇḍurābhraghanaprabham
tisraḥ kakṣyāḥ rathena eva viveśa munisattamaḥ
4. munisattamaḥ pāṇḍurābhraghanaprabham rāmabhavanam

4. The best of sages, having reached Rāma's palace, which shone like a mass of white clouds, entered its three courtyards by chariot.
तमागतमृषिं रामस्त्वरन्निव ससंभ्रमः ।
मानयिष्यन् स मानार्हं निश्चक्राम निवेशनात् ॥५॥
5. tamāgatamṛṣiṃ rāmastvaranniva sasaṃbhramaḥ ,
mānayiṣyan sa mānārhaṃ niścakrāma niveśanāt.
5. tam āgatam ṛṣim rāmaḥ tvaran iva sasaṃbhramaḥ
mānayiṣyan saḥ mānārham niścukrāma niveśanāt
5. saḥ rāmaḥ āgatam mānārham tam ṛṣim mānayiṣyan
tvaran iva sasaṃbhramaḥ niveśanāt niścukrāma
5. Rāma, as if hurrying and with great excitement, desiring to honor that revered sage who had arrived, went forth from his dwelling.
अभ्येत्य त्वरमाणश्च रथाभ्याशं मनीषिणः ।
ततो ऽवतारयामास परिगृह्य रथात् स्वयम् ॥६॥
6. abhyetya tvaramāṇaśca rathābhyāśaṃ manīṣiṇaḥ ,
tato'vatārayāmāsa parigṛhya rathāt svayam.
6. abhyetya tvaramāṇaḥ ca rathābhyāśam manīṣiṇaḥ
tataḥ avatārayāmāsa parigṛhya rathāt svayam
6. tvaramāṇaḥ ca manīṣiṇaḥ rathābhyāśam abhyetya

6. Approaching and hurrying to the vicinity of the wise sage's chariot, Rāma himself, taking hold of him, then made him alight from the chariot.
स चैनं प्रश्रितं दृष्ट्वा संभाष्याभिप्रसाद्य च ।
प्रियार्हं हर्षयन् राममित्युवाच पुरोहितः ॥७॥
7. sa cainaṃ praśritaṃ dṛṣṭvā saṃbhāṣyābhiprasādya ca ,
priyārhaṃ harṣayan rāmamityuvāca purohitaḥ.
7. saḥ ca enam praśritam dṛṣṭvā saṃbhāṣya abhiprasādya
ca priyārham harṣayan rāmam iti uvāca purohitaḥ
7. saḥ purohitaḥ praśritam enam dṛṣṭvā saṃbhāṣya
abhiprasādya ca priyārham rāmam harṣayan iti uvāca
7. The priest (Viśvāmitra), seeing him (Rāma) humble and submissive, conversing with him and pleasing him, and making Rāma, who was worthy of affection, joyful, spoke thus.
प्रसन्नस्ते पिता राम यौवराज्यमवाप्स्यसि ।
उपवासं भवानद्य करोतु सह सीतया ॥८॥
8. prasannaste pitā rāma yauvarājyamavāpsyasi ,
upavāsaṃ bhavānadya karotu saha sītayā.
8. prasannaḥ te pitā rāma yauvarājyam avāpsyasi
upavāsam bhavān adya karotu saha sītayā
8. rāma te pitā prasannaḥ tvam yauvarājyam
avāpsyasi bhavān adya sītayā saha upavāsam karotu
8. Your father, Rama, is pleased with you; you will attain the position of crown prince. You, sir, should observe a fast today along with Sītā.
प्रातस्त्वामभिषेक्ता हि यौवराज्ये नराधिपः ।
पिता दशरथः प्रीत्या ययातिं नहुषो यथा ॥९॥
9. prātastvāmabhiṣektā hi yauvarājye narādhipaḥ ,
pitā daśarathaḥ prītyā yayātiṃ nahuṣo yathā.
9. prātaḥ tvām abhiṣektā hi yauvarājye narādhipaḥ
pitā daśarathaḥ prītyā yayātim nahuṣaḥ yathā
9. hi prātaḥ narādhipaḥ pitā daśarathaḥ prītyā
tvām yauvarājye abhiṣektā yathā nahuṣaḥ yayātim
9. Indeed, in the morning, King Daśaratha, your father, will anoint you as crown prince with affection, just as Nahuṣa did for Yayāti.
इत्युक्त्वा स तदा राममुपवासं यतव्रतम् ।
मन्त्रवत् कारयामास वैदेह्या सहितं मुनिः ॥१०॥
10. ityuktvā sa tadā rāmamupavāsaṃ yatavratam ,
mantravat kārayāmāsa vaidehyā sahitaṃ muniḥ.
10. iti uktvā saḥ tadā rāmam upavāsam yatavratam
mantravat kārayāmāsa vaidehyā sahitam muniḥ
10. iti uktvā tadā saḥ muniḥ mantravat vaidehyā
sahitam yatavratam rāmam upavāsam kārayāmāsa
10. Having said this, the sage then, with sacred recitations, made Rama - who was firm in his vow - observe a fast along with Vaidehī (Sītā).
ततो यथावद् रामेण स राज्ञो गुरुरर्चितः ।
अभ्यनुज्ञाप्य काकुत्स्थं ययौ रामनिवेशनात् ॥११॥
11. tato yathāvad rāmeṇa sa rājño gururarcitaḥ ,
abhyanujñāpya kākutsthaṃ yayau rāmaniveśanāt.
11. tataḥ yathāvat rāmeṇa saḥ rājñaḥ guruḥ arcitaḥ
abhyanujñāpya kākutstham yayau rāmaniveśanāt
11. tataḥ yathāvat rāmeṇa arcitaḥ saḥ rājñaḥ guruḥ
kākutstham abhyanujñāpya rāmaniveśanāt yayau
11. Then, having been duly honored by Rama, that royal preceptor (guru) took leave of Kakutstha (Rama) and departed from Rama's abode.
सुहृद्भिस्तत्र रामो ऽपि ताननुज्ञाप्य सर्वशः ।
सभाजितो विवेशाथ ताननुज्ञाप्य सर्वशः ॥१२॥
12. suhṛdbhistatra rāmo'pi tānanujñāpya sarvaśaḥ ,
sabhājito viveśātha tānanujñāpya sarvaśaḥ.
12. suhṛdbhiḥ tatra rāmaḥ api tān anujñāpya sarvaśaḥ
sabhājitaḥ viveśa atha tān anujñāpya sarvaśaḥ
12. tatra rāmaḥ api suhṛdbhiḥ tān sarvaśaḥ anujñāpya
sabhājitaḥ atha tān sarvaśaḥ anujñāpya viveśa
12. There, Rāma, also accompanied by his friends, having bid farewell to all of them completely, was honored, and then he entered, again bidding farewell to all of them.
हृष्टनारी नरयुतं रामवेश्म तदा बभौ ।
यथा मत्तद्विजगणं प्रफुल्लनलिनं सरः ॥१३॥
13. hṛṣṭanārī narayutaṃ rāmaveśma tadā babhau ,
yathā mattadvijagaṇaṃ praphullanalinaṃ saraḥ.
13. hṛṣṭanārīnarayutam rāmavēśma tadā babhau
yathā mattadvijagaṇam praphullanalinam saraḥ
13. tadā hṛṣṭanārīnarayutam rāmavēśma babhau
yathā mattadvijagaṇam praphullanalinam saraḥ
13. At that time, Rāma's dwelling, filled with joyful women and men, shone brightly, just like a lotus pond with a flock of exuberant birds and blossoming lotuses.
स राजभवनप्रख्यात्तस्माद् रामनिवेशनात् ।
निर्गत्य ददृशे मार्गं वसिष्ठो जनसंवृतम् ॥१४॥
14. sa rājabhavanaprakhyāttasmād rāmaniveśanāt ,
nirgatya dadṛśe mārgaṃ vasiṣṭho janasaṃvṛtam.
14. sa rājabhavanaprakhyāt tasmāt rāmaniveśanāt
nirgatya dadṛśe mārgam vasiṣṭhaḥ janasaṃvṛtam
14. saḥ vasiṣṭhaḥ rājabhavanaprakhyāt tasmāt
rāmaniveśanāt nirgatya janasaṃvṛtam mārgam dadṛśe
14. Then Vasiṣṭha, coming out from that dwelling of Rāma, which resembled a royal palace, saw a road crowded with people.
वृन्दवृन्दैरयोध्यायां राजमार्गाः समन्ततः ।
बभूवुरभिसंबाधाः कुतूहलजनैर्वृताः ॥१५॥
15. vṛndavṛndairayodhyāyāṃ rājamārgāḥ samantataḥ ,
babhūvurabhisaṃbādhāḥ kutūhalajanairvṛtāḥ.
15. vṛndavṛndaiḥ ayodhyāyām rājamārgāḥ samantataḥ
babhūvuḥ abhisambādhāḥ kutūhalajanaiḥ vṛtāḥ
15. ayodhyāyām samantataḥ rājamārgāḥ vṛndavṛndaiḥ
kutūhalajanaiḥ vṛtāḥ abhisambādhāḥ babhūvuḥ
15. In Ayodhyā, the royal roads everywhere were completely obstructed by throngs and throngs of people filled with curiosity.
जनवृन्दोर्मिसंघर्षहर्षस्वनवतस्तदा ।
बभूव राजमार्गस्य सागरस्येव निस्वनः ॥१६॥
16. janavṛndormisaṃgharṣaharṣasvanavatastadā ,
babhūva rājamārgasya sāgarasyeva nisvanaḥ.
16. jana-vṛnda-urmi-saṃgharṣa-harṣa-svanavataḥ tadā
babhūva rājamārgasya sāgarasya iva nisvanaḥ
16. tadā rājamārgasya nisvanaḥ
jana-vṛnda-urmi-saṃgharṣa-harṣa-svanavataḥ sāgarasya iva babhūva
16. At that time, the main highway echoed with a roar, similar to that of an ocean, due to the joyful clamor of the clashing waves of human crowds.
सिक्तसंमृष्टरथ्या हि तदहर्वनमालिनी ।
आसीदयोध्या नगरी समुच्छ्रितगृहध्वजा ॥१७॥
17. siktasaṃmṛṣṭarathyā hi tadaharvanamālinī ,
āsīdayodhyā nagarī samucchritagṛhadhvajā.
17. sikta-saṃmṛṣṭa-rathyā hi tad-ahar-vana-mālinī
āsīt ayodhyā nagarī samucchrita-gṛha-dhvajā
17. hi tad-ahar-vana-mālinī sikta-saṃmṛṣṭa-rathyā
samucchrita-gṛha-dhvajā ayodhyā nagarī āsīt
17. Indeed, on that day, Ayodhya city appeared with its streets sprinkled and thoroughly cleaned, adorned with garlands of leaves and flowers, and with banners hoisted high on its houses.
तदा ह्ययोध्या निलयः सस्त्रीबालाबलो जनः ।
रामाभिषेकमाकाङ्क्षन्नाकाङ्क्षन्नुदयं रवेः ॥१८॥
18. tadā hyayodhyā nilayaḥ sastrībālābalo janaḥ ,
rāmābhiṣekamākāṅkṣannākāṅkṣannudayaṃ raveḥ.
18. tadā hi ayodhyā nilayaḥ sa-strī-bāla-abalaḥ janaḥ
rāma-abhiṣekam ākāṅkṣan ākāṅkṣan udayam raveḥ
18. tadā hi ayodhyā nilayaḥ sa-strī-bāla-abalaḥ janaḥ
rāma-abhiṣekam ākāṅkṣan raveḥ udayam ākāṅkṣan
18. Indeed, at that time, all the people residing in Ayodhya - including women, children, and the elderly - eagerly awaited Rama's consecration, just as one awaits the rising of the sun.
प्रजालंकारभूतं च जनस्यानन्दवर्धनम् ।
उत्सुको ऽभूज्जनो द्रष्टुं तमयोध्या महोत्सवम् ॥१९॥
19. prajālaṃkārabhūtaṃ ca janasyānandavardhanam ,
utsuko'bhūjjano draṣṭuṃ tamayodhyā mahotsavam.
19. prajā-alaṅkāra-bhūtam ca janasya-ānanda-vardhanam
utsukaḥ abhūt janaḥ draṣṭum tam ayodhyā mahotsavam
19. utsukaḥ janaḥ abhūt tam ayodhyā mahotsavam draṣṭum
prajā-alaṅkāra-bhūtam ca janasya-ānanda-vardhanam
19. And the populace became eager to witness that grand festival (mahotsava) of Ayodhya, which served as an adornment for the people and greatly increased their delight.
एवं तं जनसंबाधं राजमार्गं पुरोहितः ।
व्यूहन्निव जनौघं तं शनै राज कुलं ययौ ॥२०॥
20. evaṃ taṃ janasaṃbādhaṃ rājamārgaṃ purohitaḥ ,
vyūhanniva janaughaṃ taṃ śanai rāja kulaṃ yayau.
20. evam tam janasaṃbādham rājamārgam purohitaḥ
vyūhan iva janaugham tam śanaiḥ rājakulam yayau
20. purohitaḥ evam tam janasaṃbādham rājamārgam
tam janaugham vyūhan iva śanaiḥ rājakulam yayau
20. Thus, the royal priest, as if pushing aside that multitude of people, slowly went towards the royal palace along that royal highway crowded with people.
सिताभ्रशिखरप्रख्यं प्रासदमधिरुह्य सः ।
समियाय नरेन्द्रेण शक्रेणेव बृहस्पतिः ॥२१॥
21. sitābhraśikharaprakhyaṃ prāsadamadhiruhya saḥ ,
samiyāya narendreṇa śakreṇeva bṛhaspatiḥ.
21. sitābhrasikharaprakhyam prāsādam adhiruhya
saḥ samiyāya narendreṇa śakreṇa iva bṛhaspatiḥ
21. saḥ sitābhrasikharaprakhyam prāsādam adhiruhya
narendreṇa samiyāya bṛhaspatiḥ śakreṇa iva
21. Having ascended the palace, which resembled the peak of a white cloud, he met the king, just as Brihaspati meets Indra.
तमागतमभिप्रेक्ष्य हित्वा राजासनं नृपः ।
पप्रच्छ स च तस्मै तत् कृतमित्यभ्यवेदयत् ॥२२॥
22. tamāgatamabhiprekṣya hitvā rājāsanaṃ nṛpaḥ ,
papraccha sa ca tasmai tat kṛtamityabhyavedayat.
22. tam āgatam abhiprekṣya hitvā rājāsanam nṛpaḥ
papraccha saḥ ca tasmai tat kṛtam iti abhyavedayat
22. nṛpaḥ tam āgatam abhiprekṣya rājāsanam hitvā
papraccha ca saḥ tat kṛtam iti tasmai abhyavedayat
22. Having perceived his arrival, and leaving the royal throne, the king asked. And he (the priest) reported to him that it was done.
गुरुणा त्वभ्यनुज्ञातो मनुजौघं विसृज्य तम् ।
विवेशान्तःपुरं राजा सिंहो गिरिगुहामिव ॥२३॥
23. guruṇā tvabhyanujñāto manujaughaṃ visṛjya tam ,
viveśāntaḥpuraṃ rājā siṃho giriguhāmiva.
23. guruṇā tu abhyanujñātaḥ manujaugham visṛjya
tam viveśa antaḥpuram rājā siṃhaḥ giriguhām iva
23. rājā tu guruṇā abhyanujñātaḥ tam manujaugham
visṛjya siṃhaḥ giriguhām iva antaḥpuram viveśa
23. But the king, having been dismissed by his teacher (guru), and having sent away that multitude of people, entered the inner palace, just as a lion enters a mountain cave.
तदग्र्यवेषप्रमदाजनाकुलं महेन्द्रवेश्मप्रतिमं निवेशनम् ।
व्यदीपयंश्चारु विवेश पार्थिवः शशीव तारागणसंकुलं नभः ॥२४॥
24. tadagryaveṣapramadājanākulaṃ mahendraveśmapratimaṃ niveśanam ,
vyadīpayaṃścāru viveśa pārthivaḥ śaśīva tārāgaṇasaṃkulaṃ nabhaḥ.

24. The king, illuminating it beautifully, entered that dwelling which was filled with women in splendid attire and resembled the palace of Mahendra (Indra), just as the moon enters the sky filled with a multitude of stars.
