तौ तु दृष्ट्वा महात्मानौ भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ।
वरायुधधरौ वीरौ सुग्रीवः शङ्कितो ऽभवत् ॥१॥

1. But when Sugriva saw those two great-souled (ātman), heroic brothers, Rama and Lakshmana, bearing excellent weapons, he became apprehensive.
उद्विग्नहृदयः सर्वा दिशः समवलोकयन् ।
न व्यतिष्ठत कस्मिंश्चिद्देशे वानरपुंगवः ॥२॥
2. udvignahṛdayaḥ sarvā diśaḥ samavalokayan ,
na vyatiṣṭhata kasmiṃściddeśe vānarapuṃgavaḥ.

2. With an agitated heart, looking around in all directions, the chief of monkeys (Sugriva) could not settle in any one place.
नैव चक्रे मनः स्थाने वीक्षमाणो महाबलौ ।
कपेः परमभीतस्य चित्तं व्यवससाद ह ॥३॥
3. naiva cakre manaḥ sthāne vīkṣamāṇo mahābalau ,
kapeḥ paramabhītasya cittaṃ vyavasasāda ha.
3. na eva cakre manaḥ sthāne vīkṣamāṇaḥ mahābalau

3. He could not keep his mind at rest even while observing those two immensely powerful figures. Indeed, the mind (citta) of the extremely terrified monkey (Sugriva) became utterly dejected.
चिन्तयित्वा स धर्मात्मा विमृश्य गुरुलाघवम् ।
सुग्रीवः परमोद्विग्नः सर्वैरनुचरैः सह ॥४॥
4. cintayitvā sa dharmātmā vimṛśya gurulāghavam ,
sugrīvaḥ paramodvignaḥ sarvairanucaraiḥ saha.

4. Having pondered and weighed the pros and cons (guru-lāghavam) of the situation, that virtuous (dharmātmā) Sugriva, exceedingly agitated, along with all his attendants...
ततः स सचिवेभ्यस्तु सुग्रीवः प्लवगाधिपः ।
शशंस परमोद्विग्नः पश्यंस्तौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ॥५॥
5. tataḥ sa sacivebhyastu sugrīvaḥ plavagādhipaḥ ,
śaśaṃsa paramodvignaḥ paśyaṃstau rāmalakṣmaṇau.

5. Then, Sugriva, the lord of the monkeys, deeply agitated upon seeing those two, Rama and Lakshmana, reported (his concerns) to his ministers.
एतौ वनमिदं दुर्गं वालिप्रणिहितौ ध्रुवम् ।
छद्मना चीरवसनौ प्रचरन्ताविहागतौ ॥६॥
6. etau vanamidaṃ durgaṃ vālipraṇihitau dhruvam ,
chadmanā cīravasanau pracarantāvihāgatau.
6. etau vanam idam durgam vālipraṇihitau dhruvam
chadmanā cīravasanau pracarantau iha āgatau
6. etau dhruvam vālipraṇihitau chadmanā cīravasanau

6. These two have surely been sent by Vali; they have arrived here, disguised in bark garments and moving about this inaccessible forest.
ततः सुग्रीवसचिवा दृष्ट्वा परमधन्विनौ ।
जग्मुर्गिरितटात्तस्मादन्यच्छिखरमुत्तमम् ॥७॥
7. tataḥ sugrīvasacivā dṛṣṭvā paramadhanvinau ,
jagmurgiritaṭāttasmādanyacchikharamuttamam.

jagmuḥ giritaṭāt tasmāt anyat śikharam uttamam

7. Then, Sugriva's ministers, having seen those two supremely skilled archers, moved from that mountain cliff to another, excellent peak.
ते क्षिप्रमभिगम्याथ यूथपा यूथपर्षभम् ।
हरयो वानरश्रेष्ठं परिवार्योपतस्थिरे ॥८॥
8. te kṣipramabhigamyātha yūthapā yūthaparṣabham ,
harayo vānaraśreṣṭhaṃ parivāryopatasthire.
8. te kṣipram abhigamya atha yūthapāḥ yūthaparṣabham
harayaḥ vānaraśreṣṭham parivārya upatastire
8. atha te yūthapāḥ harayaḥ kṣipram yūthaparṣabham
vānaraśreṣṭham abhigamya parivārya upatastire
8. Then, those monkey chiefs, quickly approaching their leader, Sugriva (the best of the monkeys), surrounded him and stood by.
एकमेकायनगताः प्लवमाना गिरेर्गिरिम् ।
प्रकम्पयन्तो वेगेन गिरीणां शिखराणि च ॥९॥
9. ekamekāyanagatāḥ plavamānā girergirim ,
prakampayanto vegena girīṇāṃ śikharāṇi ca.
9. ekamekāyanagatāḥ plavamānāḥ gireḥ girim

9. Moving from one peak to another, they leaped from mountain to mountain, vigorously shaking the mountain peaks.
ततः शाखामृगाः सर्वे प्लवमाना महाबलाः ।
बभञ्जुश्च नगांस्तत्र पुष्पितान्दुर्गसंश्रितान् ॥१०॥
10. tataḥ śākhāmṛgāḥ sarve plavamānā mahābalāḥ ,
babhañjuśca nagāṃstatra puṣpitāndurgasaṃśritān.
10. tataḥ śākhāmṛgāḥ sarve plavamānāḥ mahābalāḥ
babhañjuḥ ca nagān tatra puṣpitān durgasaṃśritān
10. tataḥ sarve mahābalāḥ plavamānāḥ śākhāmṛgāḥ

10. Then, all those exceedingly mighty monkeys, as they leaped, broke the flowering trees that grew in inaccessible places there.
आप्लवन्तो हरिवराः सर्वतस्तं महागिरिम् ।
मृगमार्जारशार्दूलांस्त्रासयन्तो ययुस्तदा ॥११॥
11. āplavanto harivarāḥ sarvatastaṃ mahāgirim ,
mṛgamārjāraśārdūlāṃstrāsayanto yayustadā.
11. āplavantaḥ harivarāḥ sarvataḥ tam mahāgirim
mṛgamārjāraśārdūlān trāsayantaḥ yayuḥ tadā
11. harivarāḥ tam mahāgirim sarvataḥ āplavantaḥ
mṛgamārjāraśārdūlān trāsayantaḥ tadā yayuḥ
11. The foremost monkeys, leaping upon that great mountain from all sides, went forth, terrifying the deer, cats, and tigers.
ततः सुग्रीवसचिवाः पर्वतेन्द्रं समाश्रिताः ।
संगम्य कपिमुख्येन सर्वे प्राञ्जलयः स्थिताः ॥१२॥
12. tataḥ sugrīvasacivāḥ parvatendraṃ samāśritāḥ ,
saṃgamya kapimukhyena sarve prāñjalayaḥ sthitāḥ.
12. tataḥ sugrīvasacivāḥ parvatendram samāśritāḥ
saṅgamya kapimukhyena sarve prāñjalayaḥ sthitāḥ

12. Then, all of Sugrīva's ministers, having settled on that chief of mountains and having met the monkey chieftain, stood with palms joined in reverence.
ततस्तं भयसंत्रस्तं वालिकिल्बिषशङ्कितम् ।
उवाच हनुमान् वाक्यं सुग्रीवं वाक्यकोविदः ॥१३॥
13. tatastaṃ bhayasaṃtrastaṃ vālikilbiṣaśaṅkitam ,
uvāca hanumān vākyaṃ sugrīvaṃ vākyakovidaḥ.
13. tatas tam bhayasaṃtrastam vālikilbiṣaśaṅkitam
uvāca hanumān vākyam sugrīvam vākyakovidaḥ
13. tatas hanumān vākyakovidaḥ tam bhayasaṃtrastam
vālikilbiṣaśaṅkitam sugrīvam vākyam uvāca
13. Then Hanumān, who was skilled in speech, spoke to Sugrīva, who was terrified by fear and apprehensive of Vāli's misdeeds.
यस्मादुद्विग्नचेतास्त्वं प्रद्रुतो हरिपुंगव ।
तं क्रूरदर्शनं क्रूरं नेह पश्यामि वालिनम् ॥१४॥
14. yasmādudvignacetāstvaṃ pradruto haripuṃgava ,
taṃ krūradarśanaṃ krūraṃ neha paśyāmi vālinam.
14. yasmāt udvignacetāḥ tvam pradrutaḥ haripuṃgava
tam krūradarśanam krūram na iha paśyāmi vālinam
14. haripuṃgava aham iha tam krūradarśanam krūram
vālinam na paśyāmi yasmāt tvam udvignacetāḥ pradrutaḥ
14. O chief of monkeys, I do not see Vāli here - that cruel one of fierce appearance - from whom you have fled with such an agitated mind.
यस्मात्तव भयं सौम्य पूर्वजात् पापकर्मणः ।
स नेह वाली दुष्टात्मा न ते पश्याम्यहं भयम् ॥१५॥
15. yasmāttava bhayaṃ saumya pūrvajāt pāpakarmaṇaḥ ,
sa neha vālī duṣṭātmā na te paśyāmyahaṃ bhayam.
15. yasmāt tava bhayam saumya pūrvajāt pāpakarmaṇaḥ
saḥ na iha vālī duṣṭātmā na te paśyāmi aham bhayam
15. saumya yasmāt tava bhayam pūrvajāt pāpakarmaṇaḥ
saḥ na iha vālī duṣṭātmā aham te bhayam na paśyāmi
15. O gentle one, Vāli, your elder brother whose actions are sinful, the one from whom you have fear - he is not present here. I do not see any reason for your fear.
अहो शाखामृगत्वं ते व्यक्तमेव प्लवंगम ।
लघुचित्ततयात्मानं न स्थापयसि यो मतौ ॥१६॥
16. aho śākhāmṛgatvaṃ te vyaktameva plavaṃgama ,
laghucittatayātmānaṃ na sthāpayasi yo matau.
16. aho śākhāmṛgatvam te vyaktam eva plavaṃgama
laghucittatayā ātmānam na sthāpayasi yaḥ matau
16. aho plavaṃgama te śākhāmṛgatvam vyaktam eva.
yaḥ tvam laghucittatayā matau ātmānam na sthāpayasi
16. Alas, O monkey, your monkey-nature is indeed quite evident, for you, due to your fickle mind, are unable to keep your self (ātman) steady in conviction (mati).
बुद्धिविज्ञानसंपन्न इङ्गितैः सर्वमाचर ।
न ह्यबुद्धिं गतो राजा सर्वभूतानि शास्ति हि ॥१७॥
17. buddhivijñānasaṃpanna iṅgitaiḥ sarvamācara ,
na hyabuddhiṃ gato rājā sarvabhūtāni śāsti hi.
17. buddhivijñānasampanna iṅgitaiḥ sarvam ācara na
hi abuddhim gataḥ rājā sarvabhūtāni śāsti hi
17. buddhivijñānasampanna iṅgitaiḥ sarvam ācara hi
abuddhim gataḥ rājā sarvabhūtāni na hi śāsti
17. A person endowed with intellect and practical knowledge should act in all matters by discerning the intentions (of others). For, indeed, a king who has become unwise cannot govern all beings effectively.
सुग्रीवस्तु शुभं वाक्यं श्रुत्वा सर्वं हनूमतः ।
ततः शुभतरं वाक्यं हनूमन्तमुवाच ह ॥१८॥
18. sugrīvastu śubhaṃ vākyaṃ śrutvā sarvaṃ hanūmataḥ ,
tataḥ śubhataraṃ vākyaṃ hanūmantamuvāca ha.
18. sugrīvaḥ tu śubham vākyam śrutvā sarvam hanūmataḥ
tataḥ śubhataram vākyam hanūmantam uvāca ha
18. tu sugrīvaḥ hanūmataḥ sarvam śubham vākyam śrutvā
tataḥ hanūmantam śubhataram vākyam uvāca ha
18. But Sugriva, having heard all the excellent words from Hanuman, then spoke even more excellent words to Hanuman.
दीर्घबाहू विशालाक्षौ शरचापासिधारिणौ ।
कस्य न स्याद्भयं दृष्ट्वा एतौ सुरसुतोपमौ ॥१९॥
19. dīrghabāhū viśālākṣau śaracāpāsidhāriṇau ,
kasya na syādbhayaṃ dṛṣṭvā etau surasutopamau.
19. dīrghabāhū viśālākṣau śaracāpāsidhāriṇau
kasya na syāt bhayam dṛṣṭvā etau surasutopamau
19. etau dīrghabāhū viśālākṣau śaracāpāsidhāriṇau

19. Upon seeing these two, who possess long arms and broad eyes, carry arrows, bows, and swords, and resemble sons of gods, whose fear would not arise?
वालिप्रणिहितावेतौ शङ्के ऽहं पुरुषोत्तमौ ।
राजानो बहुमित्राश्च विश्वासो नात्र हि क्षमः ॥२०॥
20. vālipraṇihitāvetau śaṅke'haṃ puruṣottamau ,
rājāno bahumitrāśca viśvāso nātra hi kṣamaḥ.
20. vālipraṇihitau etau śaṅke aham puruṣottamau
rājānaḥ bahumitrāḥ ca viśvāsaḥ na atra hi kṣamaḥ
20. aham śaṅke etau vālipraṇihitau puruṣottamau hi
rājānaḥ bahumitrāḥ ca atra viśvāsaḥ na kṣamaḥ
20. I suspect these two excellent men have been sent by Vali. Kings often have many allies, and therefore, it is certainly not appropriate to place trust here.
अरयश्च मनुष्येण विज्ञेयाश्छन्नचारिणः ।
विश्वस्तानामविश्वस्ताश्छिद्रेषु प्रहरन्ति हि ॥२१॥
21. arayaśca manuṣyeṇa vijñeyāśchannacāriṇaḥ ,
viśvastānāmaviśvastāśchidreṣu praharanti hi.
21. arayaḥ ca manuṣyeṇa vijñeyāḥ channacāriṇaḥ |
viśvastānām aviśvastāḥ chidreṣu praharanti hi
21. manuṣyeṇa channacāriṇaḥ arayaḥ ca vijñeyāḥ
aviśvastāḥ viśvastānām chidreṣu hi praharanti
21. A person should recognize their enemies, who operate covertly. Indeed, these untrustworthy individuals strike at the weaknesses of those who place their trust in them.
कृत्येषु वाली मेधावी राजानो बहुदर्शनाः ।
भवन्ति परहन्तारस्ते ज्ञेयाः प्राकृतैर्नरैः ॥२२॥
22. kṛtyeṣu vālī medhāvī rājāno bahudarśanāḥ ,
bhavanti parahantāraste jñeyāḥ prākṛtairnaraiḥ.
22. kṛtyeṣu vālī medhāvī rājānaḥ bahudarśanāḥ |
bhavanti parahantāraḥ te jñeyāḥ prākṛtaiḥ naraiḥ
22. kṛtyeṣu vālī medhāvī rājānaḥ bahudarśanāḥ
parahantāraḥ bhavanti te prākṛtaiḥ naraiḥ jñeyāḥ
22. Vali is intelligent in his endeavors, and kings are generally highly experienced. Such individuals become vanquishers of foes; they should be understood by common people.
तौ त्वया प्राकृतेनैव गत्वा ज्ञेयौ प्लवंगम ।
शङ्कितानां प्रकारैश्च रूपव्याभाषणेन च ॥२३॥
23. tau tvayā prākṛtenaiva gatvā jñeyau plavaṃgama ,
śaṅkitānāṃ prakāraiśca rūpavyābhāṣaṇena ca.
23. tau tvayā prākṛtena eva gatvā jñeyau plavaṅgama
| śaṅkitānām prakāraiḥ ca rūpavyābhāṣaṇena ca
23. plavaṅgama,
tvayā prākṛtena eva gatvā tau jñeyau śaṅkitānām prakāraiḥ ca rūpavyābhāṣaṇena ca
23. O monkey, you must go and identify those two, acting as an ordinary person. Recognize them by the various signs of suspicious individuals, as well as by their appearance and manner of speaking.
लक्षयस्व तयोर्भावं प्रहृष्टमनसौ यदि ।
विश्वासयन्प्रशंसाभिरिङ्गितैश्च पुनः पुनः ॥२४॥
24. lakṣayasva tayorbhāvaṃ prahṛṣṭamanasau yadi ,
viśvāsayanpraśaṃsābhiriṅgitaiśca punaḥ punaḥ.
24. lakṣayasva tayoḥ bhāvam prahṛṣṭamanasau yadi |
viśvāsayān praśaṃsābhiḥ iṅgitaiḥ ca punaḥ punaḥ
24. tayoḥ bhāvam lakṣayasva yadi (tau) prahṛṣṭamanasau
praśaṃsābhiḥ ca iṅgitaiḥ punaḥ punaḥ viśvāsayān
24. Observe their state of mind, especially if they appear joyful. Gain their trust repeatedly through praises and subtle hints.
ममैवाभिमुखं स्थित्वा पृच्छ त्वं हरिपुंगव ।
प्रयोजनं प्रवेशस्य वनस्यास्य धनुर्धरौ ॥२५॥
25. mamaivābhimukhaṃ sthitvā pṛccha tvaṃ haripuṃgava ,
prayojanaṃ praveśasya vanasyāsya dhanurdharau.
25. mama eva abhimukham sthitvā pṛccha tvam haripuṅgava
| prayojanam praveśasya vanasya asya dhanurdharau
25. haripuṅgava tvam mama eva abhimukham sthitvā
dhanurdharau asya vanasya praveśasya prayojanam pṛccha
25. O best among monkeys (haripuṅgava), you ask the two archers, after they have stood directly facing me, the purpose of their entry into this forest.
शुद्धात्मानौ यदि त्वेतौ जानीहि त्वं प्लवंगम ।
व्याभाषितैर्वा रूपैर्वा विज्ञेया दुष्टतानयोः ॥२६॥
26. śuddhātmānau yadi tvetau jānīhi tvaṃ plavaṃgama ,
vyābhāṣitairvā rūpairvā vijñeyā duṣṭatānayoḥ.
26. śuddha ātmānau yadi tu etau jānīhi tvam plavaṅgama
| vyābhāṣitaiḥ vā rūpaiḥ vā vijñeyā duṣṭatā anayoḥ
26. plavaṅgama tvam yadi etau śuddha ātmānau jānīhi
vā vyābhāṣitaiḥ vā rūpaiḥ anayoḥ duṣṭatā vijñeyā
26. O monkey (plavaṅgama), you should ascertain if these two are pure in spirit (ātman). Their wickedness, if present, should be identified either through their speech or their physical appearance.
इत्येवं कपिराजेन संदिष्टो मारुतात्मजः ।
चकार गमने बुद्धिं यत्र तौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ॥२७॥
27. ityevaṃ kapirājena saṃdiṣṭo mārutātmajaḥ ,
cakāra gamane buddhiṃ yatra tau rāmalakṣmaṇau.
27. iti evam kapirājena saṃdiṣṭaḥ mārutātmajaḥ |
cakāra gamane buddhim yatra tau rāmalakṣmaṇau
27. kapi-rājena iti evam saṃdiṣṭaḥ mārutātmajaḥ
yatra tau rāmalakṣmaṇau gamane buddhim cakāra
27. Thus, having been instructed by the king of monkeys (kapirāja), the son of the wind-god (mārutātmaja) resolved to go to where those two, Rama and Lakshmana, were.
तथेति संपूज्य वचस्तु तस्य कपेः सुभीतस्य दुरासदस्य ।
महानुभावो हनुमान्ययौ तदा स यत्र रामो ऽतिबलश्च लक्ष्मणः ॥२८॥
28. tatheti saṃpūjya vacastu tasya kapeḥ subhītasya durāsadasya ,
mahānubhāvo hanumānyayau tadā sa yatra rāmo'tibalaśca lakṣmaṇaḥ.
28. tathā iti saṃpūjya vacaḥ tu tasya
kapeḥ subhītasya durāsadasya |
mahānubhāvaḥ hanumān yayau tadā sa
yatra rāmaḥ atibalaḥ ca lakṣmaṇaḥ
28. mahānubhāvaḥ sa hanumān tasya
subhītasya durāsadasya kapeḥ vacaḥ
"tathā iti" saṃpūjya tadā yatra
rāmaḥ ca atibalaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ yayau
28. Saying 'So be it,' and revering the words of that monkey (kapeḥ) - who was greatly frightened and yet formidable - the highly esteemed Hanuman then went to where Rama and the exceedingly strong Lakshmana were.
