ततो द्यां पृथिवीं चैव वीक्षमाणा वनौकसः ।
ददृशुः संततौ बाणैर्भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ॥१॥
1. tato dyāṃ pṛthivīṃ caiva vīkṣamāṇā vanaukasaḥ ,

1. Then, the forest dwellers, scanning both the sky and the earth, saw the two brothers, Rama and Lakshmana, completely covered with arrows.
वृष्ट्वेवोपरते देवे कृतकर्मणि राक्षसे ।
आजगामाथ तं देशं ससुग्रीवो विभीषणः ॥२॥
2. vṛṣṭvevoparate deve kṛtakarmaṇi rākṣase ,
ājagāmātha taṃ deśaṃ sasugrīvo vibhīṣaṇaḥ.

2. After the divine shower of arrows had ceased, as if a god had finished raining, and the demon (rākṣasa) had accomplished his task, then Vibhishana, accompanied by Sugriva, arrived at that place.
नीलद्विविदमैन्दाश्च सुषेणसुमुखाङ्गदाः ।
तूर्णं हनुमता सार्धमन्वशोचन्त राघवौ ॥३॥
3. nīladvividamaindāśca suṣeṇasumukhāṅgadāḥ ,
tūrṇaṃ hanumatā sārdhamanvaśocanta rāghavau.

3. Nila, Dvivida, Mainda, Sushena, Sumukha, and Angada, quickly together with Hanuman, grieved for the two Raghavas.
निश्चेष्टौ मन्दनिःश्वासौ शोणितौघपरिप्लुतौ ।
शरजालाचितौ स्तब्धौ शयानौ शरतल्पयोः ॥४॥
4. niśceṣṭau mandaniḥśvāsau śoṇitaughapariplutau ,
śarajālācitau stabdhau śayānau śaratalpayoḥ.

4. Lying on beds of arrows, they were motionless, breathing faintly, drenched in streams of blood, covered by a network of arrows, and rigid.
निःश्वसन्तौ यथा सर्पौ निश्चेष्टौ मन्दविक्रमौ ।
रुधिरस्रावदिग्धाङ्गौ तापनीयाविव ध्वजौ ॥५॥
5. niḥśvasantau yathā sarpau niśceṣṭau mandavikramau ,
rudhirasrāvadigdhāṅgau tāpanīyāviva dhvajau.

5. Sighing like two snakes, motionless and with diminished strength, their limbs smeared with flowing blood, they resembled two fallen golden banners.
तौ वीरशयने वीरौ शयानौ मन्दचेष्टितौ ।
यूथपैस्तैः परिवृतौ बाष्पव्याकुललोचनैः ॥६॥
6. tau vīraśayane vīrau śayānau mandaceṣṭitau ,
yūthapaistaiḥ parivṛtau bāṣpavyākulalocanaiḥ.

6. Those two heroes lay on the battlefield, their movements sluggish, surrounded by their troop leaders whose eyes were agitated with tears.
राघवौ पतितौ दृष्ट्वा शरजालसमावृतौ ।
बभूवुर्व्यथिताः सर्वे वानराः सविभीषणाः ॥७॥
7. rāghavau patitau dṛṣṭvā śarajālasamāvṛtau ,
babhūvurvyathitāḥ sarve vānarāḥ savibhīṣaṇāḥ.

7. Upon seeing the two Raghus fallen and enveloped in a net of arrows, all the monkeys, along with Vibhishana, became distressed.
अन्तरिक्षं निरीक्षन्तो दिशः सर्वाश्च वानराः ।
न चैनं मायया छन्नं ददृशू रावणिं रणे ॥८॥
8. antarikṣaṃ nirīkṣanto diśaḥ sarvāśca vānarāḥ ,
na cainaṃ māyayā channaṃ dadṛśū rāvaṇiṃ raṇe.
8. antarikṣam nirīkṣantaḥ diśaḥ sarvāḥ ca vānarāḥ
na ca enam māyayā channam dadṛśuḥ rāvaṇim raṇe

8. And the monkeys, looking at the sky and all directions, did not see Ravani (Indrajit), who was concealed by illusion (māyā), on the battlefield.
तं तु मायाप्रतिच्छिन्नं माययैव विभीषणः ।
वीक्षमाणो ददर्शाथ भ्रातुः पुत्रमवस्थितम् ॥९॥
9. taṃ tu māyāpraticchinnaṃ māyayaiva vibhīṣaṇaḥ ,
vīkṣamāṇo dadarśātha bhrātuḥ putramavasthitam.
9. tam tu māyāpraticchinnaṃ māyayā eva vibhīṣaṇaḥ
vīkṣamāṇaḥ dadarśa atha bhrātuḥ putram avasthitam
9. Vibhīṣaṇa then saw his brother's son (Indrajit) standing there, who was concealed by illusion (māyā), perceiving him by means of illusion (māyā) itself.
तमप्रतिम कर्माणमप्रतिद्वन्द्वमाहवे ।
ददर्शान्तर्हितं वीरं वरदानाद्विभीषणः ॥१०॥
10. tamapratima karmāṇamapratidvandvamāhave ,
dadarśāntarhitaṃ vīraṃ varadānādvibhīṣaṇaḥ.
10. tam apratimakarmāṇam apratidvandvam āhave
dadarśa antarhitaṃ vīraṃ varadānāt vibhīṣaṇaḥ
10. Vibhīṣaṇa saw that hero (Indrajit), whose deeds were unequalled and who was unopposed in battle, concealed due to the boon he had received.
इन्द्रजित्त्वात्मनः कर्म तौ शयानौ समीक्ष्य च ।
उवाच परमप्रीतो हर्षयन् सर्वनैरृतान् ॥११॥
11. indrajittvātmanaḥ karma tau śayānau samīkṣya ca ,
uvāca paramaprīto harṣayan sarvanairṛtān.
11. indrajit sva ātmanaḥ karma tau śayānau samīkṣya
ca uvāca paramaprītaḥ harṣayan sarvanairṛtān
11. Indrajit, having witnessed his own achievement and seeing those two (Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa) lying unconscious, spoke, exceedingly pleased, delighting all the rākṣasas.
दूषणस्य च हन्तारौ खरस्य च महाबलौ ।
सादितौ मामकैर्बाणैर्भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ॥१२॥
12. dūṣaṇasya ca hantārau kharasya ca mahābalau ,
sāditau māmakairbāṇairbhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau.
12. dūṣaṇasya ca hantārau kharasya ca mahābalau
sāditau māmakaiḥ bāṇaiḥ bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau
12. The two brothers, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, who were mighty and the killers of both Dūṣaṇa and Khara, have been vanquished by my arrows.
नेमौ मोक्षयितुं शक्यावेतस्मादिषुबन्धनात् ।
सर्वैरपि समागम्य सर्षिसङ्घैः सुरासुरैः ॥१३॥
13. nemau mokṣayituṃ śakyāvetasmādiṣubandhanāt ,
sarvairapi samāgamya sarṣisaṅghaiḥ surāsuraiḥ.
13. na imau mokṣayitum śakyau etasmāt iṣu-bandhanāt
sarvaiḥ api samāgamya sa-ṛṣi-saṅghaiḥ sura-asuraiḥ
13. These two (Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa) cannot be freed from this binding by arrows, even if all the gods, demons, and groups of sages were to assemble.
यत्कृते चिन्तयानस्य शोकार्तस्य पितुर्मम ।
अस्पृष्ट्वा शयनं गात्रैस्त्रियामा याति शर्वती ॥१४॥
14. yatkṛte cintayānasya śokārtasya piturmama ,
aspṛṣṭvā śayanaṃ gātraistriyāmā yāti śarvatī.
14. yat-kṛte cintayānasya śoka-ārtasya pituḥ mama
aspṛṣṭvā śayanam gātraiḥ tri-yāmā yāti śarvarī
14. Because of him, my father, tormented by sorrow, spends the night (tri-yāmā) in thought, without his limbs touching the bed.
कृत्स्नेयं यत्कृते लङ्का नदी वर्षास्विवाकुला ।
सो ऽयं मूलहरो ऽनर्थः सर्वेषां निहतो मया ॥१५॥
15. kṛtsneyaṃ yatkṛte laṅkā nadī varṣāsvivākulā ,
so'yaṃ mūlaharo'narthaḥ sarveṣāṃ nihato mayā.
15. kṛtsnā iyam yat-kṛte laṅkā nadī varṣāsu iva ākulā
saḥ ayam mūla-haraḥ anarthaḥ sarveṣām nihataḥ mayā
15. Because of him, this whole of Laṅkā is agitated like a river during the monsoon season. That disaster, which was the root cause of trouble for everyone, has been slain by me.
रामस्य लक्ष्मणस्यैव सर्वेषां च वनौकसाम् ।
विक्रमा निष्फलाः सर्वे यथा शरदि तोयदाः ॥१६॥
16. rāmasya lakṣmaṇasyaiva sarveṣāṃ ca vanaukasām ,
vikramā niṣphalāḥ sarve yathā śaradi toyadāḥ.
16. rāmasya lakṣmaṇasya eva sarveṣām ca vana-okasām
vikramāḥ niṣphalāḥ sarve yathā śaradi toyadāḥ
16. All the valiant deeds of Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa, and indeed all the forest-dwellers are now futile, just like clouds in the autumn season.
एवमुक्त्वा तु तान् सर्वान् राक्षसान्परिपार्श्वगान् ।
यूथपानपि तान् सर्वांस्ताडयामास रावणिः ॥१७॥
17. evamuktvā tu tān sarvān rākṣasānparipārśvagān ,
yūthapānapi tān sarvāṃstāḍayāmāsa rāvaṇiḥ.
17. evam uktvā tu tān sarvān rākṣasān paripārśvagān
yūthapān api tān sarvān tāḍayāmāsa rāvaṇiḥ
17. Having thus spoken to all those demons standing around him, the son of Rāvaṇa (Indrajit) then struck all those commanders.
तानर्दयित्वा बाणौघैस्त्रासयित्वा च वानरान् ।
प्रजहास महाबाहुर्वचनं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥१८॥
18. tānardayitvā bāṇaughaistrāsayitvā ca vānarān ,
prajahāsa mahābāhurvacanaṃ cedamabravīt.
18. tān ardayitvā bāṇaughaiḥ trāsayitvā ca vānarān
prajahāsa mahābāhuḥ vacanam ca idam abravīt
18. Having tormented them with torrents of arrows and frightened the monkeys (Vānaras), the mighty-armed Indrajit laughed aloud and spoke these words.
शरबन्धेन घोरेण मया बद्धौ चमूमुखे ।
सहितौ भ्रातरावेतौ निशामयत राक्षसाः ॥१९॥
19. śarabandhena ghoreṇa mayā baddhau camūmukhe ,
sahitau bhrātarāvetau niśāmayata rākṣasāḥ.
19. śarabandhena ghoreṇa mayā baddhau camūmukhe
sahitau bhrātarau etau niśāmayata rākṣasāḥ
19. O demons, behold these two brothers, bound together by me at the front of the army with a terrible arrow-bond.
एवमुक्तास्तु ते सर्वे राक्षसाः कूटयोधिनः ।
परं विस्मयमाजग्मुः कर्मणा तेन तोषिताः ॥२०॥
20. evamuktāstu te sarve rākṣasāḥ kūṭayodhinaḥ ,
paraṃ vismayamājagmuḥ karmaṇā tena toṣitāḥ.
20. evam uktāḥ tu te sarve rākṣasāḥ kūṭayodhinaḥ
param vismayam ājagmuḥ karmaṇā tena toṣitāḥ
20. Having thus been addressed, all those deceitful demon warriors were greatly astonished and pleased by that feat (karma).
विनेदुश्च महानादान् सर्वे ते जलदोपमाः ।
हतो राम इति ज्ञात्वा रावणिं समपूजयन् ॥२१॥
21. vineduśca mahānādān sarve te jaladopamāḥ ,
hato rāma iti jñātvā rāvaṇiṃ samapūjayan.
21. vineduḥ ca mahānādān sarve te jaladopamāḥ
hataḥ rāmaḥ iti jñātvā rāvaṇim samapūjayan
21. sarve te jaladopamāḥ mahānādān vineduḥ rāmaḥ
hataḥ iti jñātvā rāvaṇim ca samapūjayan
21. And all of them, roaring mighty sounds like thunderclouds, honored Rāvaṇi (Indrajit) upon learning, 'Rāma has been killed.'
निष्पन्दौ तु तदा दृष्ट्वा ताव् उभौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ।
वसुधायां निरुच्छ्वासौ हतावित्यन्वमन्यत ॥२२॥
22. niṣpandau tu tadā dṛṣṭvā tāv ubhau rāmalakṣmaṇau ,
vasudhāyāṃ nirucchvāsau hatāvityanvamanyata.
22. niṣpandau tu tadā dṛṣṭvā tau ubhau rāmalakṣmaṇau
vasudhāyām nirucchvāsau hatau iti anvamanyata
22. tu tadā dṛṣṭvā ubhau rāmalakṣmaṇau niṣpandau nirucchvāsau vasudhāyām,
tau hatau iti anvamanyata
22. And then, seeing both Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa lying motionless and breathless on the ground, he concluded that they were dead.
हर्षेण तु समाविष्ट इन्द्रजित् समितिंजयः ।
प्रविवेश पुरीं लङ्कां हर्षयन् सर्वनैरृतान् ॥२३॥
23. harṣeṇa tu samāviṣṭa indrajit samitiṃjayaḥ ,
praviveśa purīṃ laṅkāṃ harṣayan sarvanairṛtān.
23. harṣeṇa tu samāviṣṭaḥ indrajit samitiñjayaḥ
praviveśa purīm laṅkām harṣayan sarvanairṛtān
23. tu harṣeṇa samāviṣṭaḥ samitiñjayaḥ indrajit
laṅkām purīm praviveśa sarvanairṛtān harṣayan
23. And Indrajit, the conqueror of assemblies, filled with great joy, entered the city of Laṅkā, delighting all the Rākṣasas.
रामलक्ष्मणयोर्दृष्ट्वा शरीरे सायकैश्चिते ।
सर्वाणि चाङ्गोपाङ्गानि सुग्रीवं भयमाविशत् ॥२४॥
24. rāmalakṣmaṇayordṛṣṭvā śarīre sāyakaiścite ,
sarvāṇi cāṅgopāṅgāni sugrīvaṃ bhayamāviśat.
24. rāmalakṣmaṇayoḥ dṛṣṭvā śarīre sāyakaiḥ cite
sarvāṇi ca aṅgopāṅgāni sugrīvam bhayam āviśat
24. dṛṣṭvā rāmalakṣmaṇayoḥ sāyakaiḥ cite śarīre ca sarvāṇi aṅgopāṅgāni,
bhayam sugrīvam āviśat
24. And seeing the bodies of Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, along with all their major and minor limbs, covered with arrows, fear gripped Sugrīva.
तमुवाच परित्रस्तं वानरेन्द्रं विभीषणः ।
सबाष्पवदनं दीनं शोकव्याकुललोचनम् ॥२५॥
25. tamuvāca paritrastaṃ vānarendraṃ vibhīṣaṇaḥ ,
sabāṣpavadanaṃ dīnaṃ śokavyākulalocanam.
25. tam uvāca paritrastaṃ vānarendraṃ vibhīṣaṇaḥ
sabāṣpavadanaṃ dīnaṃ śokavyākulalocanam
25. vibhīṣaṇaḥ paritrastaṃ sabāṣpavadanaṃ dīnaṃ
śokavyākulalocanaṃ tam vānarendraṃ uvāca
25. Vibhishana spoke to that greatly frightened lord of monkeys, whose face was tearful and distressed, and whose eyes were agitated by sorrow.
अलं त्रासेन सुग्रीव बाष्पवेगो निगृह्यताम् ।
एवं प्रायाणि युद्धानि विजयो नास्ति नैष्ठिकः ॥२६॥
26. alaṃ trāsena sugrīva bāṣpavego nigṛhyatām ,
evaṃ prāyāṇi yuddhāni vijayo nāsti naiṣṭhikaḥ.
26. alam trāsena sugrīva bāṣpavegaḥ nigṛhyatām evam
prāyāṇi yuddhāni vijayaḥ na asti naiṣṭhikaḥ
26. sugrīva! trāsena alam.
bāṣpavegaḥ nigṛhyatām.
evam prāyāṇi yuddhāni vijayaḥ naiṣṭhikaḥ na asti
26. Enough of this fear, Sugriva! Control your surge of tears. In battles of this kind, victory is not permanent.
सशेषभाग्यतास्माकं यदि वीर भविष्यति ।
मोहमेतौ प्रहास्येते भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ॥२७॥
27. saśeṣabhāgyatāsmākaṃ yadi vīra bhaviṣyati ,
mohametau prahāsyete bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau.
27. saśeṣabhāgyatā asmākam yadi vīra bhaviṣyati
moham etau prahāsyete bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau
27. vīra! yadi asmākam saśeṣabhāgyatā bhaviṣyati,
etau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau moham prahāsyete
27. If, O hero, our good fortune (bhāgyatā) still remains, then these two brothers, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, will surely abandon this state of unconsciousness (moha).
पर्यवस्थापयात्मानमनाथं मां च वानर ।
सत्यधर्मानुरक्तानां नास्ति मृत्युकृतं भयम् ॥२८॥
28. paryavasthāpayātmānamanāthaṃ māṃ ca vānara ,
satyadharmānuraktānāṃ nāsti mṛtyukṛtaṃ bhayam.
28. paryavasthāpaya ātmānam anātham mām ca vānara
satyadharmānuraktānām na asti mṛtyukṛtam bhayam
28. vānara! ātmānam ca anātham mām paryavasthāpaya.
satyadharmānuraktānām mṛtyukṛtam bhayam na asti
28. O monkey, compose yourself and also me, who am helpless. For those devoted to truth and (dharma) natural law, there is no fear caused by death.
एवमुक्त्वा ततस्तस्य जलक्लिन्नेन पाणिना ।
सुग्रीवस्य शुभे नेत्रे प्रममार्ज विभीषणः ॥२९॥
29. evamuktvā tatastasya jalaklinnena pāṇinā ,
sugrīvasya śubhe netre pramamārja vibhīṣaṇaḥ.
29. evam uktvā tataḥ tasya jalaklinnena pāṇinā
sugrīvasya śubhe netre pramamārja vibhīṣaṇaḥ
29. evam uktvā tataḥ vibhīṣaṇaḥ jalaklinnena
pāṇinā tasya sugrīvasya śubhe netre pramamārja
29. Having spoken thus, Vibhīṣaṇa then wiped Sugrīva's beautiful eyes with his water-moistened hand.
प्रमृज्य वदनं तस्य कपिराजस्य धीमतः ।
अब्रवीत् कालसंप्रातमसंभ्रान्तमिदं वचः ॥३०॥
30. pramṛjya vadanaṃ tasya kapirājasya dhīmataḥ ,
abravīt kālasaṃprātamasaṃbhrāntamidaṃ vacaḥ.
30. pramṛjya vadanam tasya kapirājasya dhīmataḥ
abravīt kālasamprātam asaṃbhrāntam idam vacaḥ
30. tasya dhīmataḥ kapirājasya vadanam pramṛjya
abravīt kālasamprātam asaṃbhrāntam idam vacaḥ
30. Having wiped the face of that wise king of monkeys, he spoke these words, which were timely and unperturbed.
न कालः कपिराजेन्द्र वैक्लव्यमनुवर्तितुम् ।
अतिस्नेहो ऽप्यकाले ऽस्मिन्मरणायोपपद्यते ॥३१॥
31. na kālaḥ kapirājendra vaiklavyamanuvartitum ,
atisneho'pyakāle'sminmaraṇāyopapadyate.
31. na kālaḥ kapirājendra vaiklavyam anuvartitum
atisnehaḥ api akāle asmin maraṇāya upapadyate
31. kapirājendra vaiklavyam anuvartitum na kālaḥ
asmin akāle atisnehaḥ api maraṇāya upapadyate
31. O king of monkeys, this is not the time to give in to despair. Even excessive attachment (sneha) at such an inappropriate moment can lead to ruin.
तस्मादुत्सृज्य वैक्लव्यं सर्वकार्यविनाशनम् ।
हितं रामपुरोगाणां सैन्यानामनुचिन्त्यताम् ॥३२॥
32. tasmādutsṛjya vaiklavyaṃ sarvakāryavināśanam ,
hitaṃ rāmapurogāṇāṃ sainyānāmanucintyatām.
32. tasmāt utsṛjya vaiklavyam sarvakāryavināśanam
hitam rāmapurogāṇām sainyānām anucintyatām
32. tasmāt sarvakāryavināśanam vaiklavyam utsṛjya
rāmapurogāṇām sainyānām hitam anucintyatām
32. Therefore, abandoning despair, which destroys all efforts, let the welfare of the armies led by Rāma be thoughtfully considered.
अथ वा रक्ष्यतां रामो यावत् संज्ञा विपर्ययः ।
लब्धसंज्ञौ तु काकुत्स्थौ भयं नो व्यपनेष्यतः ॥३३॥
33. atha vā rakṣyatāṃ rāmo yāvat saṃjñā viparyayaḥ ,
labdhasaṃjñau tu kākutsthau bhayaṃ no vyapaneṣyataḥ.
33. atha vā rakṣyatām rāmaḥ yāvat saṃjñā viparyayaḥ
labdhasaṃjñau tu kākutsthau bhayam naḥ vyapaneṣyataḥ
33. Alternatively, let Rāma be protected until his consciousness is restored. However, once the two princes of the Kākutstha lineage regain their senses, they will surely remove our fear.
नैतत् किं चन रामस्य न च रामो मुमूर्षति ।
न ह्येनं हास्यते लक्ष्मीर्दुर्लभा या गतायुषाम् ॥३४॥
34. naitat kiṃ cana rāmasya na ca rāmo mumūrṣati ,
na hyenaṃ hāsyate lakṣmīrdurlabhā yā gatāyuṣām.
34. na etat kim cana rāmasya na ca rāmaḥ mumūrṣati
na hi enam hāsyate lakṣmīḥ durlabhā yā gatāyuṣām
34. This is certainly nothing to Rāma, nor does Rāma desire to die. Indeed, prosperity (lakṣmī), which is rarely attained by those whose life has departed, will not abandon him.
तस्मादाश्वासयात्मानं बलं चाश्वासय स्वकम् ।
यावत् सर्वाणि सैन्यानि पुनः संस्थापयाम्यहम् ॥३५॥
35. tasmādāśvāsayātmānaṃ balaṃ cāśvāsaya svakam ,
yāvat sarvāṇi sainyāni punaḥ saṃsthāpayāmyaham.
35. tasmāt āśvāsaya ātmānam balam ca āśvāsaya svakam
yāvat sarvāṇi sainyāni punaḥ saṃsthāpayāmi aham
35. Therefore, reassure your own self (ātman) and your own army until I can re-establish all the troops again.
एते ह्युत्फुल्लनयनास्त्रासादागतसाध्वसाः ।
कर्णे कर्णे प्रकथिता हरयो हरिपुंगव ॥३६॥
36. ete hyutphullanayanāstrāsādāgatasādhvasāḥ ,
karṇe karṇe prakathitā harayo haripuṃgava.
36. ete hi utphullanayanāḥ trāsāt āgatasaṃdhvasāḥ
karṇe karṇe prakathitāḥ harayaḥ haripuṃgava
36. Indeed, these monkeys, with wide-open eyes and overcome by terror due to fear, are being spoken about (whispered) from ear to ear, O best of monkeys!
मां तु दृष्ट्वा प्रधावन्तमनीकं संप्रहर्षितुम् ।
त्यजन्तु हरयस्त्रासं भुक्तपूर्वामिव स्रजम् ॥३७॥
37. māṃ tu dṛṣṭvā pradhāvantamanīkaṃ saṃpraharṣitum ,
tyajantu harayastrāsaṃ bhuktapūrvāmiva srajam.
37. mām tu dṛṣṭvā pradhāvantam anīkam sampraharṣitum
tyajantu harayaḥ trāsam bhuktapūrvām iva srajam
37. tu harayaḥ mām pradhāvantam dṛṣṭvā,
anīkam sampraharṣitum,
trāsam bhuktapūrvām srajam iva tyajantu
37. But upon seeing me (the illusory Sītā) being dragged forward, which will greatly agitate the army, the monkeys will surely cast away their courage as one discards a garland that has been previously worn.
समाश्वास्य तु सुग्रीवं राक्षसेन्द्रो विभीषणः ।
विद्रुतं वानरानीकं तत् समाश्वासयत् पुनः ॥३८॥
38. samāśvāsya tu sugrīvaṃ rākṣasendro vibhīṣaṇaḥ ,
vidrutaṃ vānarānīkaṃ tat samāśvāsayat punaḥ.
38. samāśvāsya tu sugrīvam rākṣasendraḥ vibhīṣaṇaḥ
vidrutam vānarānīkam tat samāśvāsayat punaḥ
38. tu rākṣasendraḥ vibhīṣaṇaḥ sugrīvam samāśvāsya,
punaḥ tat vidrutam vānarānīkam samāśvāsayat
38. But after consoling Sugrīva, Vibhīṣaṇa, the chief of the rākṣasas, then again comforted that scattered Vānara army.
इन्द्रजित्तु महामायः सर्वसैन्यसमावृतः ।
विवेश नगरीं लङ्कां पितरं चाभ्युपागमत् ॥३९॥
39. indrajittu mahāmāyaḥ sarvasainyasamāvṛtaḥ ,
viveśa nagarīṃ laṅkāṃ pitaraṃ cābhyupāgamat.
39. indrajit tu mahāmāyaḥ sarvasainyasamāvṛtaḥ
viveśa nagarīm laṅkām pitaram ca abhyupāgamat
39. tu mahāmāyaḥ sarvasainyasamāvṛtaḥ indrajit
laṅkām nagarīm viveśa ca pitaram abhyupāgamat
39. But Indrajit, master of great illusion (māyā) and surrounded by his entire army, entered the city of Laṅkā and then approached his father.
तत्र रावणमासीनमभिवाद्य कृताञ्जलिः ।
आचचक्षे प्रियं पित्रे निहतौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ॥४०॥
40. tatra rāvaṇamāsīnamabhivādya kṛtāñjaliḥ ,
ācacakṣe priyaṃ pitre nihatau rāmalakṣmaṇau.
40. tatra rāvaṇam āsīnam abhivādya kṛtāñjaliḥ
ācacaksṣe priyam pitre nihatau rāmalakṣmaṇau
40. tatra kṛtāñjaliḥ āsīnam rāvaṇam abhivādya,

40. There, having bowed down to and saluted Rāvaṇa, who was seated, and with hands respectfully folded (kṛtāñjali), (Indrajit) reported the pleasing news to his father that Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa had been killed.
उत्पपात ततो हृष्टः पुत्रं च परिषस्वजे ।
रावणो रक्षसां मध्ये श्रुत्वा शत्रू निपातितौ ॥४१॥
41. utpapāta tato hṛṣṭaḥ putraṃ ca pariṣasvaje ,
rāvaṇo rakṣasāṃ madhye śrutvā śatrū nipātitau.

rāvaṇaḥ rakṣasām madhye śrutvā śatrū nipātitau

41. Upon hearing that the two enemies had been slain, Ravana, filled with joy, jumped up amidst the rakshasas and embraced his son.
उपाघ्राय स मूर्ध्न्येनं पप्रच्छ प्रीतमानसः ।
पृच्छते च यथावृत्तं पित्रे सर्वं न्यवेदयत् ॥४२॥
42. upāghrāya sa mūrdhnyenaṃ papraccha prītamānasaḥ ,
pṛcchate ca yathāvṛttaṃ pitre sarvaṃ nyavedayat.
42. upāghrāya saḥ mūrdhani enam papraccha prītamānasaḥ
pṛcchate ca yathāvṛttam pitre sarvam nyavedayat
42. saḥ prītamānasaḥ enam mūrdhani upāghrāya papraccha

42. He, with a pleased mind, kissed him on the head and then asked. To his inquiring father, (the son) reported everything exactly as it had occurred.
स हर्षवेगानुगतान्तरात्मा श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य महारथस्य ।
जहौ ज्वरं दाशरथेः समुत्थितं प्रहृष्य वाचाभिननन्द पुत्रम् ॥४३॥
43. sa harṣavegānugatāntarātmā śrutvā vacastasya mahārathasya ,
jahau jvaraṃ dāśaratheḥ samutthitaṃ prahṛṣya vācābhinananda putram.

vacas tasya mahārathasya jahau
jvaram dāśaratheḥ samutthitam
prahṛṣya vācā abhinananda putram

43. His inner self overcome by a surge of joy, he (Ravana), upon hearing the words of that great warrior (Indrajit), cast off the anguish that had arisen due to Dasharatha's son (Rama). Filled with delight, he praised his son with words.
