कामधेनुं वसिष्ठो ऽपि यदा न त्यजते मुनिः ।
तदास्य शबलां राम विश्वामित्रो ऽन्वकर्षत ॥१॥
1. kāmadhenuṃ vasiṣṭho'pi yadā na tyajate muniḥ ,
tadāsya śabalāṃ rāma viśvāmitro'nvakarṣata.

1. When even the sage Vasiṣṭha would not give up the wish-fulfilling cow (Kāmadhenu), then Viśvāmitra, O Rāma, forcibly seized his cow Śabalā.
नीयमाना तु शबला राम राज्ञा महात्मना ।
दुःखिता चिन्तयामास रुदन्ती शोककर्शिता ॥२॥
2. nīyamānā tu śabalā rāma rājñā mahātmanā ,
duḥkhitā cintayāmāsa rudantī śokakarśitā.

2. But Śabalā, O Rāma, being led away by the magnanimous king, felt distressed and pondered, weeping and overwhelmed by grief.
परित्यक्ता वसिष्ठेन किमहं सुमहात्मना ।
याहं राजभृतैर्दीना ह्रियेयं भृशदुःखिता ॥३॥
3. parityaktā vasiṣṭhena kimahaṃ sumahātmanā ,
yāhaṃ rājabhṛtairdīnā hriyeyaṃ bhṛśaduḥkhitā.
3. parityaktā vasiṣṭhena kim aham sumahātmanā yā
aham rājabhṛtaiḥ dīnā hriyeyam bhṛśaduḥkhitā
3. aham su-mahātmanā vasiṣṭhena kim parityaktā yā

3. Why have I been abandoned by the very great-souled Vasiṣṭha, such that I, helpless and deeply distressed, am now being carried off by royal servants?
किं मयापकृतं तस्य महर्षेर्भावितात्मनः ।
यन्मामनागसं भक्तामिष्टां त्यजति धार्मिकः ॥४॥
4. kiṃ mayāpakṛtaṃ tasya maharṣerbhāvitātmanaḥ ,
yanmāmanāgasaṃ bhaktāmiṣṭāṃ tyajati dhārmikaḥ.
4. kim mayā apakṛtam tasya maharṣeḥ bhāvitātmanaḥ
yat mām anāgasam bhaktām iṣṭām tyajati dhārmikaḥ
4. mayā tasya bhāvita-ātmanaḥ maharṣeḥ kim apakṛtam
yat dhārmikaḥ mām anāgasam bhaktām iṣṭām tyajati
4. What wrong have I done to that great sage (maharṣi), whose soul (ātman) is so pure, that he, a righteous person (dhārmika), abandons me, who am innocent, devoted, and beloved?
इति सा चिन्तयित्वा तु निःश्वस्य च पुनः पुनः ।
जगाम वेगेन तदा वसिष्ठं परमौजसं ॥५॥
5. iti sā cintayitvā tu niḥśvasya ca punaḥ punaḥ ,
jagāma vegena tadā vasiṣṭhaṃ paramaujasaṃ.

jagāma vegena tadā vasiṣṭham paramaujasam

5. Having thus pondered and sighed repeatedly, she then swiftly went to Vasiṣṭha, the supremely mighty sage.
निर्धूय तांस्तदा भृत्याञ् शतशः शत्रुसूदन ।
जगामानिलवेगेन पादमूलं महात्मनः ॥६॥
6. nirdhūya tāṃstadā bhṛtyāñ śataśaḥ śatrusūdana ,
jagāmānilavegena pādamūlaṃ mahātmanaḥ.
6. nirdhūya tān tadā bhṛtyān śataśaḥ śatrusūdana
jagāma anilavegena pādamūlam mahātmanaḥ
6. śatrusūdana,
tadā tān bhṛtyān śataśaḥ nirdhūya,
anila-vegena mahātmanaḥ pāda-mūlam jagāma
6. Having then shaken off those hundreds of servants, O slayer of foes, she went with the speed of the wind to the presence (literally, 'foot-base') of the great-souled one.
शबला सा रुदन्ती च क्रोशन्ती चेदमब्रवीत् ।
वसिष्ठस्याग्रतः स्थित्वा मेघदुन्दुभिराविणी ॥७॥
7. śabalā sā rudantī ca krośantī cedamabravīt ,
vasiṣṭhasyāgrataḥ sthitvā meghadundubhirāviṇī.
7. śabalā sā rudantī ca krośantī ca idam abravīt
vasiṣṭhasya agrataḥ sthitvā meghadundubhirāviṇī
7. sā śabalā rudantī ca krośantī ca meghadundubhirāviṇī
vasiṣṭhasya agrataḥ sthitvā idam abravīt
7. And weeping and lamenting, Sabala, standing before Vasiṣṭha with a voice like a thundercloud or a drum, said this.
भगवन् किं परित्यक्ता त्वयाहं ब्रह्मणः सुत ।
यस्माद् राजभृता मां हि नयन्ते त्वत्सकाशतः ॥८॥
8. bhagavan kiṃ parityaktā tvayāhaṃ brahmaṇaḥ suta ,
yasmād rājabhṛtā māṃ hi nayante tvatsakāśataḥ.
8. bhagavan kim parityaktā tvayā aham brahmaṇaḥ suta
yasmāt rājabhṛtāḥ mām hi nayante tvatsakāśataḥ
8. bhagavan brahmaṇaḥ suta tvayā aham kim parityaktā
yasmāt hi rājabhṛtāḥ tvatsakāśataḥ mām nayante
8. O revered one, son of Brahmā, why have I been abandoned by you? Because, look, the king's servants are indeed taking me away from your presence.
एवमुक्तस्तु ब्रह्मर्षिरिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ।
शोकसंतप्तहृदयां स्वसारमिव दुःखिताम् ॥९॥
9. evamuktastu brahmarṣiridaṃ vacanamabravīt ,
śokasaṃtaptahṛdayāṃ svasāramiva duḥkhitām.
9. evam uktaḥ tu brahmarṣiḥ idam vacanam abravīt
śokasaṃtaptahṛdayām svasāram iva duḥkhitām
9. evam uktaḥ tu brahmarṣiḥ śokasaṃtaptahṛdayām
duḥkhitām svasāram iva idam vacanam abravīt
9. But the Brahmarshi, thus addressed, spoke these words to her, whose heart was tormented by grief, as if she were his own distressed sister.
न त्वां त्यजामि शबले नापि मे ऽपकृतं त्वया ।
एष त्वां नयते राजा बलान्मत्तो महाबलः ॥१०॥
10. na tvāṃ tyajāmi śabale nāpi me'pakṛtaṃ tvayā ,
eṣa tvāṃ nayate rājā balānmatto mahābalaḥ.
10. na tvām tyajāmi śabale na api me apakṛtam tvayā
eṣaḥ tvām nayate rājā balāt mattaḥ mahābalaḥ
10. śabale aham tvām na tyajāmi tvayā me api na apakṛtam
eṣaḥ mahābalaḥ rājā tvām mattaḥ balāt nayate
10. I am not abandoning you, O Sabala, nor have you done any wrong to me. This exceedingly powerful king is taking you away from me by force.
न हि तुल्यं बलं मह्यं राजा त्वद्य विशेषतः ।
बली राजा क्षत्रियश्च पृथिव्याः पतिरेव च ॥११॥
11. na hi tulyaṃ balaṃ mahyaṃ rājā tvadya viśeṣataḥ ,
balī rājā kṣatriyaśca pṛthivyāḥ patireva ca.
11. na hi tulyam balam mahyam rājā tu adya viśeṣataḥ
balī rājā kṣatriyaḥ ca pṛthivyāḥ patiḥ eva ca
11. hi na mahyam balam tulyam (asti),
rājā tu adya viśeṣataḥ.
rājā balī ca kṣatriyaḥ ca pṛthivyāḥ patiḥ eva ca (asti).
11. Indeed, the king's strength is not equal to mine, especially now. The king is powerful, a warrior, and truly the lord of the earth.
इयमक्षौहिणीपूर्णा सवाजिरथसंकुला ।
हस्तिध्वजसमाकीर्णा तेनासौ बलवत्तरः ॥१२॥
12. iyamakṣauhiṇīpūrṇā savājirathasaṃkulā ,
hastidhvajasamākīrṇā tenāsau balavattaraḥ.
12. iyam akṣauhiṇīpūrṇā savājirathasaṅkulā
hastidhvajasamākīrṇā tena asau balavattaraḥ
12. iyam akṣauhiṇīpūrṇā savājirathasaṅkulā hastidhvajasamākīrṇā (asti).
tena asau balavattaraḥ (asti).
12. This army, filled with an akṣauhiṇī (a large division of troops), is crowded with horses and chariots, and covered with elephants and banners. Because of this, he (the king) is stronger.
एवमुक्ता वसिष्ठेन प्रत्युवाच विनीतवत् ।
वचनं वचनज्ञा सा ब्रह्मर्षिममितप्रभम् ॥१३॥
13. evamuktā vasiṣṭhena pratyuvāca vinītavat ,
vacanaṃ vacanajñā sā brahmarṣimamitaprabham.
13. evam uktā vasiṣṭhena pratyuvāca vinītavat
vacanam vacanajñā sā brahmarṣim amitaprabham
13. vasiṣṭhena evam uktā sā vacanajñā vinītavat brahmarṣim amitaprabham vacanam pratyuvāca.
13. Thus addressed by Vasiṣṭha, she, being eloquent, humbly replied to the Brahmarṣi of immeasurable splendor.
न बलं क्षत्रियस्याहुर्ब्राह्मणो बलवत्तरः ।
ब्रह्मन्ब्रह्मबलं दिव्यं क्षत्रात्तु बलवत्तरम् ॥१४॥
14. na balaṃ kṣatriyasyāhurbrāhmaṇo balavattaraḥ ,
brahmanbrahmabalaṃ divyaṃ kṣatrāttu balavattaram.
14. na balam kṣatriyasya āhuḥ brāhmaṇaḥ balavattaraḥ
brahman brahmabalam divyam kṣatrāt tu balavattaram
14. kṣatriyasya balam na āhuḥ,
brāhmaṇaḥ balavattaraḥ (asti).
brahman,
divyam brahmabalam tu kṣatrāt balavattaram (asti).
14. They do not declare the power of a warrior to be truly strong; a Brahmin is more powerful. O Brahmin, spiritual power (brahmabalam) is divine and indeed stronger than temporal power (kṣatra).
अप्रमेयबलं तुभ्यं न त्वया बलवत्तरः ।
विश्वामित्रो महावीर्यस्तेजस्तव दुरासदम् ॥१५॥
15. aprameyabalaṃ tubhyaṃ na tvayā balavattaraḥ ,
viśvāmitro mahāvīryastejastava durāsadam.
15. aprameyabalam tubhyam na tvayā balavattaraḥ
viśvāmitraḥ mahāvīryaḥ tejaḥ tava durāsadam
15. tubhyam aprameyabalam tvayā balavattaraḥ na
viśvāmitraḥ mahāvīryaḥ tava tejaḥ durāsadam
15. Your strength is immeasurable, and no one is stronger than you. Even the greatly valorous Viśvāmitra finds your splendor unassailable.
नियुङ्क्ष्व मां महातेजस्त्वद्ब्रह्मबलसंभृताम् ।
तस्य दर्पं बलं यत्तन्नाशयामि दुरात्मनः ॥१६॥
16. niyuṅkṣva māṃ mahātejastvadbrahmabalasaṃbhṛtām ,
tasya darpaṃ balaṃ yattannāśayāmi durātmanaḥ.
16. niyuṅkṣva mām mahātejas tvatbrahmabalasaṃbhṛtām
tasya darpam balam yat tat nāśayāmi durātmanaḥ
16. mahātejas mām tvatbrahmabalasaṃbhṛtām niyuṅkṣva
yat tat tasya durātmanaḥ darpam balam nāśayāmi
16. O greatly radiant one, employ me, who is imbued with the power of your (brahman) spiritual might. Whatever pride and strength that evil-minded one possesses, I shall destroy.
इत्युक्तस्तु तया राम वसिष्ठः सुमहायशाः ।
सृजस्वेति तदोवाच बलं परबलारुजम् ॥१७॥
17. ityuktastu tayā rāma vasiṣṭhaḥ sumahāyaśāḥ ,
sṛjasveti tadovāca balaṃ parabalārujam.
17. iti uktaḥ tu tayā rāma vasiṣṭhaḥ sumahāyaśāḥ
sṛjasva iti tadā uvāca balam parabalarujam
17. rāma tayā iti uktaḥ tu sumahāyaśāḥ vasiṣṭhaḥ
tadā sṛjasva iti parabalarujam balam uvāca
17. O Rāma, thus addressed by her, the very renowned Vasiṣṭha then said, "Create a force capable of crushing the strength of enemies!"
तस्या हुम्भारवोत्सृष्टाः पह्लवाः शतशो नृप ।
नाशयन्ति बलं सर्वं विश्वामित्रस्य पश्यतः ॥१८॥
18. tasyā humbhāravotsṛṣṭāḥ pahlavāḥ śataśo nṛpa ,
nāśayanti balaṃ sarvaṃ viśvāmitrasya paśyataḥ.
18. tasyā humbhārava utsṛṣṭāḥ pahlavāḥ śataśaḥ nṛpa
nāśayanti balam sarvam viśvāmitrasya paśyataḥ
18. nṛpa tasyā humbhārava utsṛṣṭāḥ śataśaḥ pahlavāḥ
viśvāmitrasya paśyataḥ sarvam balam nāśayanti
18. O King, the Pahlavas, unleashed by her with hundreds of roars, destroyed Viśvāmitra's entire army as he watched.
स राजा परमक्रुद्धः क्रोधविस्फारितेक्षणः ।
पह्लवान्नाशयामास शस्त्रैरुच्चावचैरपि ॥१९॥
19. sa rājā paramakruddhaḥ krodhavisphāritekṣaṇaḥ ,
pahlavānnāśayāmāsa śastrairuccāvacairapi.
19. saḥ rājā parama-kruddhaḥ krodha-visphāritekṣaṇaḥ
pahlavān nāśayāmāsa śastraiḥ uccāvacaiḥ api
19. saḥ rājā parama-kruddhaḥ krodha-visphāritekṣaṇaḥ
pahlavān uccāvacaiḥ śastraiḥ api nāśayāmāsa
19. The king, intensely furious and with eyes wide from anger, annihilated the Pahlavas even with various types of weapons.
विश्वामित्रार्दितान्दृष्ट्वा पह्लवाञ् शतशस्तदा ।
भूय एवासृजद्घोराञ् शकान्यवनमिश्रितान् ॥२०॥
20. viśvāmitrārditāndṛṣṭvā pahlavāñ śataśastadā ,
bhūya evāsṛjadghorāñ śakānyavanamiśritān.
20. viśvāmitrārdditān dṛṣṭvā pahlavān śataśaḥ tadā
bhūyaḥ eva asṛjat ghorān śakān yavana-miśritān
20. tadā viśvāmitrārdditān śataśaḥ pahlavān dṛṣṭvā
bhūyaḥ eva ghorān yavana-miśritān śakān asṛjat
20. Seeing the Pahlavas tormented by Viśvāmitra in hundreds, he then again created fierce Śakas mixed with Yavanas.
तैरासीत् संवृता भूमिः शकैर्यवनमिश्रितैः ।
प्रभावद्भिर्महावीर्यैर्हेमकिञ्जल्कसंनिभैः ॥२१॥
21. tairāsīt saṃvṛtā bhūmiḥ śakairyavanamiśritaiḥ ,
prabhāvadbhirmahāvīryairhemakiñjalkasaṃnibhaiḥ.
21. taiḥ āsīt saṃvṛtā bhūmiḥ śakaiḥ yavana-miśritaiḥ
prabhāvaddbhiḥ mahā-vīryaiḥ hema-kiñjalka-saṃnibhaiḥ
21. taiḥ yavana-miśritaiḥ prabhāvaddbhiḥ mahā-vīryaiḥ
hema-kiñjalka-saṃnibhaiḥ śakaiḥ bhūmiḥ saṃvṛtā āsīt
21. The earth was covered by those powerful, extremely mighty Śakas, who were mixed with Yavanas and resembled golden filaments.
दीर्घासिपट्टिशधरैर्हेमवर्णाम्बरावृतैः ।
निर्दग्धं तद्बलं सर्वं प्रदीप्तैरिव पावकैः ॥२२॥
22. dīrghāsipaṭṭiśadharairhemavarṇāmbarāvṛtaiḥ ,
nirdagdhaṃ tadbalaṃ sarvaṃ pradīptairiva pāvakaiḥ.
22. dīrghāsi-paṭṭiśa-dharaiḥ hema-varṇāmbara-āvṛtaiḥ
nirdagdham tat balam sarvam pradīptaiḥ iva pāvakaiḥ
22. dīrghāsi-paṭṭiśa-dharaiḥ hema-varṇāmbara-āvṛtaiḥ
pradīptaiḥ pāvakaiḥ iva tat sarvam balam nirdagdham
22. That entire army was completely consumed, as if by blazing fires, by those (warriors) who bore long swords and javelins and were covered in golden-colored garments.
ततो ऽस्त्राणि महातेजा
विश्वामित्रो मुमोच ह ॥२३॥
23. tato'strāṇi mahātejā
viśvāmitro mumoca ha.

23. Then, the greatly energetic Viśvāmitra indeed discharged his weapons.
