स रामप्रेषितः क्षिप्रं संतापकलुषेन्द्रियः ।
प्रविश्य नृपतिं सूतो निःश्वसन्तं ददर्श ह ॥१॥

क्षिप्रम् प्रविश्य निःश्वसन्तम् नृपतिम् ह ददर्श

That charioteer (sūta), Sumantra, sent by Rāma, whose senses were agitated by distress, quickly entered and saw the king sighing.
आलोक्य तु महाप्राज्ञः परमाकुल चेतसं ।
राममेवानुशोचन्तं सूतः प्राञ्जलिरासदत् ॥२॥

The very wise charioteer (sūta) then approached, with folded hands, having seen the king whose mind was extremely agitated and who was lamenting solely for Rāma.
अयं स पुरुषव्याघ्र द्वारि तिष्ठति ते सुतः ।
ब्राह्मणेभ्यो धनं दत्त्वा सर्वं चैवोपजीविनाम् ॥३॥

3. ayaṃ sa puruṣavyāghra dvāri tiṣṭhati te sutaḥ ,

O tiger among men, your son stands at the door. He has given all his wealth to the Brahmins and to his dependents.
स त्वा पश्यतु भद्रं ते रामः सत्यपराक्रमः ।
सर्वान् सुहृद आपृच्छ्य त्वामिदानीं दिदृक्षते ॥४॥

4. sa tvā paśyatu bhadraṃ te rāmaḥ satyaparākramaḥ ,

May Rama, whose valor is true, see you, and may good fortune be upon you. Having taken leave of all his friends, he now wishes to see you.
गमिष्यति महारण्यं तं पश्य जगतीपते ।
वृतं राजगुणैः सर्वैरादित्यमिव रश्मिभिः ॥५॥

5. gamiṣyati mahāraṇyaṃ taṃ paśya jagatīpate ,

5.
O lord of the earth, he will go to the great forest. Behold him, endowed with all royal qualities, like the sun surrounded by its rays.
स सत्यवादी धर्मात्मा गाम्भीर्यात् सागरोपमः ।
आकाश इव निष्पङ्को नरेन्द्रः प्रत्युवाच तम् ॥६॥

6. sa satyavādī dharmātmā gāmbhīryāt sāgaropamaḥ ,

That king was truthful and righteous in his intrinsic nature (dharma). He was comparable to the ocean in profundity, and unblemished like the sky. He replied to him.
सुमन्त्रानय मे दारान्ये के चिदिह मामकाः ।
दारैः परिवृतः सर्वैर्द्रष्टुमिच्छामि राघवम् ॥७॥

7. sumantrānaya me dārānye ke cidiha māmakāḥ ,
dāraiḥ parivṛtaḥ sarvairdraṣṭumicchāmi rāghavam.

sumantra ānaya me dārān ye ke cit iha māmakāḥ

Sumantra, bring me my wives, all those who belong to me and are present here. I wish to see Rāghava, surrounded by all of them.
सो ऽन्तःपुरमतीत्यैव स्त्रियस्ता वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
आर्यो ह्वयति वो राजा गम्यतां तत्र माचिरम् ॥८॥

8. so'ntaḥpuramatītyaiva striyastā vākyamabravīt ,

Having just passed through the inner palace, he spoke these words to those women: "The noble king is calling you. Go there without delay."
एवमुक्ताः स्त्रियः सर्वाः सुमन्त्रेण नृपाज्ञया ।
प्रचक्रमुस्तद्भवनं भर्तुराज्ञाय शासनम् ॥९॥

9. evamuktāḥ striyaḥ sarvāḥ sumantreṇa nṛpājñayā ,

Thus addressed by Sumantra on the king's command, all the women set out for that palace, having understood the master's order.
अर्धसप्तशतास्तास्तु प्रमदास्ताम्रलोचनाः ।
कौसल्यां परिवार्याथ शनैर्जग्मुर्धृतव्रताः ॥१०॥

10. ardhasaptaśatāstāstu pramadāstāmralocanāḥ ,

Then, those three hundred and fifty beautiful women, with reddish-brown eyes, who were steadfast in their vows, surrounded Kausalya and slowly proceeded.
आगतेषु च दारेषु समवेक्ष्य महीपतिः ।
उवाच राजा तं सूतं सुमन्त्रानय मे सुतम् ॥११॥

11. āgateṣu ca dāreṣu samavekṣya mahīpatiḥ ,

After his wives had arrived, the king, having carefully observed the situation, said to his charioteer, Sumantra: 'Bring my son to me.'
स सूतो राममादाय लक्ष्मणं मैथिलीं तदा ।
जगामाभिमुखस्तूर्णं सकाशं जगतीपतेः ॥१२॥

12. sa sūto rāmamādāya lakṣmaṇaṃ maithilīṃ tadā ,
jagāmābhimukhastūrṇaṃ sakāśaṃ jagatīpateḥ.

Then that charioteer, taking Rama, Lakshmana, and Maithili (Sita), quickly went towards the presence of the king.
स राजा पुत्रमायान्तं दृष्ट्वा दूरात् कृताञ्जलिम् ।
उत्पपातासनात्तूर्णमार्तः स्त्रीजनसंवृतः ॥१३॥

13. sa rājā putramāyāntaṃ dṛṣṭvā dūrāt kṛtāñjalim ,
utpapātāsanāttūrṇamārtaḥ strījanasaṃvṛtaḥ.

saḥ rājā putram āyāntam dṛṣṭvā dūrāt kṛtāñjalim

That king, having seen his son approaching from a distance with folded hands, distressed and surrounded by women, quickly rose from his seat.
सो ऽभिदुद्राव वेगेन रामं दृष्ट्वा विशां पतिः ।
तमसंप्राप्य दुःखार्तः पपात भुवि मूर्छितः ॥१४॥

14. so'bhidudrāva vegena rāmaṃ dṛṣṭvā viśāṃ patiḥ ,
tamasaṃprāpya duḥkhārtaḥ papāta bhuvi mūrchitaḥ.

saḥ abhidudrāva vegena rāmam dṛṣṭvā viśām patiḥ
tam asaṃprāpya duḥkhārtaḥ papāta bhuvi mūrcchitaḥ
tam asaṃprāpya duḥkhārtaḥ papāta bhuvi mūrcchitaḥ
14.
saḥ viśām patiḥ rāmam dṛṣṭvā vegena abhidudrāva
tam asaṃprāpya duḥkhārtaḥ mūrcchitaḥ bhuvi papāta
tam asaṃprāpya duḥkhārtaḥ mūrcchitaḥ bhuvi papāta
14.
That lord of the people (king), having seen Rama, swiftly rushed towards him. But unable to reach him, he, afflicted by sorrow, fell unconscious to the ground.
तं रामो ऽभ्यपातत् क्षिप्रं लक्ष्मणश्च महारथः ।
विसंज्ञमिव दुःखेन सशोकं नृपतिं तदा ॥१५॥

15. taṃ rāmo'bhyapātat kṣipraṃ lakṣmaṇaśca mahārathaḥ ,
visaṃjñamiva duḥkhena saśokaṃ nṛpatiṃ tadā.

tam rāmaḥ abhyapātat kṣipram lakṣmaṇaḥ ca mahārathaḥ

tadā rāmaḥ mahārathaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ ca duḥkhena

Then Rama and Lakshmana, the great chariot-warrior, quickly approached that king, who was as if unconscious and deeply afflicted by sorrow.
स्त्रीसहस्रनिनादश्च संजज्ञे राजवेश्मनि ।
हाहा रामेति सहसा भूषणध्वनिमूर्छितः ॥१६॥
हाहा रामेति सहसा भूषणध्वनिमूर्छितः ॥१६॥
16. strīsahasraninādaśca saṃjajñe rājaveśmani ,
hāhā rāmeti sahasā bhūṣaṇadhvanimūrchitaḥ.

And a cry from thousands of women arose in the royal palace, a sudden lament of "Oh, Rama!" that was intensified by the sound of their ornaments.
तं परिष्वज्य बाहुभ्यां ताव् उभौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ।
पर्यङ्के सीतया सार्धं रुदन्तः समवेशयन् ॥१७॥

17. taṃ pariṣvajya bāhubhyāṃ tāv ubhau rāmalakṣmaṇau ,

Rama and Lakshmana, those two, embraced him with their arms and, weeping, gently placed him on the couch beside Sita.
अथ रामो मुहूर्तेन लब्धसंज्ञं महीपतिम् ।
उवाच प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा शोकार्णवपरिप्लुतम् ॥१८॥

18. atha rāmo muhūrtena labdhasaṃjñaṃ mahīpatim ,
uvāca prāñjalirbhūtvā śokārṇavapariplutam.

Then, after a moment, Rama, standing with joined hands (prāñjali), spoke to the king, who had regained consciousness but was still submerged in an ocean of grief.
आपृच्छे त्वां महाराज सर्वेषामीश्वरो ऽसि नः ।
प्रस्थितं दण्डकारण्यं पश्य त्वं कुशलेन माम् ॥१९॥
प्रस्थितं दण्डकारण्यं पश्य त्वं कुशलेन माम् ॥१९॥
19. āpṛcche tvāṃ mahārāja sarveṣāmīśvaro'si naḥ ,
prasthitaṃ daṇḍakāraṇyaṃ paśya tvaṃ kuśalena mām.

āpṛcche tvām mahārāja sarveṣām īśvaraḥ asi naḥ |
prasthitam daṇḍakāraṇyam paśya tvam kuśalena mām

mahārāja naḥ sarveṣām īśvaraḥ asi tvām āpṛcche

O great king, I bid you farewell, for you are indeed the lord of us all. May you see me, who is now departing safely for the Daṇḍaka forest, in good health.
लक्ष्मणं चानुजानीहि सीता चान्वेति मां वनम् ।
कारणैर्बहुभिस्तथ्यैर्वार्यमाणौ न चेच्छतः ॥२०॥

20. lakṣmaṇaṃ cānujānīhi sītā cānveti māṃ vanam ,
kāraṇairbahubhistathyairvāryamāṇau na cecchataḥ.

lakṣmaṇam ca anujānīhi sītā ca anveti mām vanam |
kāraṇaiḥ bahubhiḥ tathyaiḥ vāryamāṇau na ca icchataḥ

20.
(tvam) lakṣmaṇam ca anujānīhi sītā ca mām vanam anveti
bahubhiḥ tathyaiḥ kāraṇaiḥ vāryamāṇau ca na icchataḥ
bahubhiḥ tathyaiḥ kāraṇaiḥ vāryamāṇau ca na icchataḥ
20.
And permit Lakṣmaṇa (to come); Sītā too follows me to the forest. Though restrained by many valid reasons, the two of them do not wish to stay.
अनुजानीहि सर्वान्नः शोकमुत्सृज्य मानद ।
लक्ष्मणं मां च सीतां च प्रजापतिरिव प्रजाः ॥२१॥

21. anujānīhi sarvānnaḥ śokamutsṛjya mānada ,
lakṣmaṇaṃ māṃ ca sītāṃ ca prajāpatiriva prajāḥ.

O giver of honor, abandoning your grief, permit all of us - Lakṣmaṇa, me, and Sītā - just as Prajāpati (the creator) cherishes his creatures.

Having carefully observed Rāghava, who was waiting undisturbed for the permission of the lord of the earth (king) for his forest dwelling, Rarjā spoke.
अहं राघव कैकेय्या वरदानेन मोहितः ।
अयोध्यायास्त्वमेवाद्य भव राजा निगृह्य माम् ॥२३॥

O Rāghava, I am bewildered by Kaikeyī's boon. Today, you alone should become the king of Ayodhyā, disregarding my (current) command.
एवमुक्तो नृपतिना रामो धर्मभृतां वरः ।

Thus addressed by the king, Rāma, who was supreme among the upholders of natural law (dharma) and skilled in speech, folded his hands (making an añjali) and replied to his father.
भवान् वर्षसहस्राय पृथिव्या नृपते पतिः ।
अहं त्वरण्ये वत्स्यामि न मे कार्यं त्वयानृतम् ॥२५॥

Your Majesty, O King, you are (destined to be) the ruler of the earth for a thousand years. As for me, I shall dwell in the forest. It is not my business to cause your oath to be broken.
श्रेयसे वृद्धये तात पुनरागमनाय च ।
गच्छस्वारिष्टमव्यग्रः पन्थानमकुतोभयम् ॥२६॥

O dear one, for your welfare, prosperity, and for your return, go unharmed, undisturbed, upon a path free from all danger.

मातरं मां च संपश्यन् वसेमामद्य शर्वरीम् ।
तर्पितः सर्वकामैस्त्वं श्वःकाले साधयिष्यसि ॥२७॥

My son, do not depart at all this night, right now. Staying here, seeing me, your mother, remain this night. Satisfied with all your desires (kāma), you may then proceed tomorrow morning.

Then, having heard the words of his distressed father, Rama, himself troubled, spoke to his brother Lakshmana.
प्राप्स्यामि यानद्य गुणान् को मे श्वस्तान्प्रदास्यति ।

The qualities (guṇa) that I would attain today, who will bestow them upon me tomorrow? Therefore, I choose only departure (apakramaṇa) in preference to all desires (kāma).
इयं सराष्ट्रा सजना धनधान्यसमाकुला ।
मया विसृष्टा वसुधा भरताय प्रदीयताम् ॥३०॥

This earth (vasudhā), along with its kingdom and its people, teeming with wealth and grain, which has been relinquished by me, let it be given to Bharata.
अपगच्छतु ते दुःखं मा भूर्बाष्पपरिप्लुतः ।
न हि क्षुभ्यति दुर्धर्षः समुद्रः सरितां पतिः ॥३१॥

31. apagacchatu te duḥkhaṃ mā bhūrbāṣpapariplutaḥ ,

Let your sorrow depart; do not be overcome by tears. Indeed, the unconquerable ocean, the lord of rivers, does not become agitated.
नैवाहं राज्यमिच्छामि न सुखं न च मैथिलीम् ।
त्वामहं सत्यमिच्छामि नानृतं पुरुषर्षभ ॥३२॥

32. naivāhaṃ rājyamicchāmi na sukhaṃ na ca maithilīm ,

I do not desire a kingdom, nor happiness, nor even Maithili (Sita). O best among men, I truly desire you, not falsely.
पुरं च राष्ट्रं च मही च केवला मया निसृष्टा भरताय दीयताम् ।
अहं निदेशं भवतो ऽनुपालयन् वनं गमिष्यामि चिराय सेवितुम् ॥३३॥

33.
And the city, the kingdom, and the entire earth have been relinquished by me; let them be given to Bharata. I, obeying your command, will go to the forest to reside there for a long time.
मया निसृष्टां भरतो महीमिमां सशैलखण्डां सपुरां सकाननाम् ।
शिवां सुसीमामनुशास्तु केवलं त्वया यदुक्तं नृपते यथास्तु तत् ॥३४॥

34. mayā nisṛṣṭāṃ bharato mahīmimāṃ saśailakhaṇḍāṃ sapurāṃ sakānanām ,

saśailakhaṇḍām sapurām sakānanām

34.
mayā nisṛṣṭām imām mahīm saśailakhaṇḍām
sapurām sakānanām śivām
susīmām bharataḥ kevalam anuśāstu
nṛpate yat tvayā uktam tat yathā astu

susīmām bharataḥ kevalam anuśāstu

34.
Let Bharata rule this earth, relinquished by me, along with its mountain ranges, cities, and forests, as auspicious and well-bounded. O king, whatever you have said, let that be exactly so.
न मे तथा पार्थिव धीयते मनो महत्सु कामेषु न चात्मनः प्रिये ।
यथा निदेशे तव शिष्टसंमते व्यपैतु दुःखं तव मत्कृते ऽनघ ॥३५॥

35. na me tathā pārthiva dhīyate mano mahatsu kāmeṣu na cātmanaḥ priye ,

mahatsu kāmeṣu na ca ātmanaḥ priye

yathā nideśe tava śiṣṭasaṃmate

pārthiva anagha,
me manaḥ tathā mahatsu kāmeṣu na dhīyate,
ātmanaḥ priye ca na.
yathā śiṣṭasaṃmate tava nideśe,
matkṛte tava duḥkham vyapaitu.
me manaḥ tathā mahatsu kāmeṣu na dhīyate,
ātmanaḥ priye ca na.
yathā śiṣṭasaṃmate tava nideśe,
matkṛte tava duḥkham vyapaitu.
35.
O King, my mind is not as fixed on great desires or on what is dear to myself. Rather, in accordance with your command, which is approved by the wise, may your sorrow, caused by me, O sinless one, depart.
तदद्य नैवानघ राज्यमव्ययं न सर्वकामान्न सुखं न मैथिलीम् ।
न जीवितं त्वामनृतेन योजयन् वृणीय सत्यं व्रतमस्तु ते तथा ॥३६॥
न जीवितं त्वामनृतेन योजयन् वृणीय सत्यं व्रतमस्तु ते तथा ॥३६॥
36. tadadya naivānagha rājyamavyayaṃ na sarvakāmānna sukhaṃ na maithilīm ,
na jīvitaṃ tvāmanṛtena yojayan vṛṇīya satyaṃ vratamastu te tathā.

tat adya na eva anagha rājyam avyayam
na sarvakāmān na sukham na Maithilīm
na jīvitam tvām anṛtena yojayan
vṛṇīya satyam vratam astu te tathā
na sarvakāmān na sukham na Maithilīm
na jīvitam tvām anṛtena yojayan
vṛṇīya satyam vratam astu te tathā
36.
anagha,
tat adya tvām anṛtena yojayan avyayam rājyam,
na sarvakāmān,
na sukham,
na Maithilīm,
na jīvitam eva na vṛṇīya.
te satyam vratam tathā astu.
tat adya tvām anṛtena yojayan avyayam rājyam,
na sarvakāmān,
na sukham,
na Maithilīm,
na jīvitam eva na vṛṇīya.

36.
Therefore, O sinless one, today I would choose neither the imperishable kingdom, nor all desires, nor happiness, nor Maithili, nor even life itself, if it meant connecting you with untruth. Let your vow of truth (satya) remain steadfast.
फलानि मूलानि च भक्षयन् वने गिरींश्च पश्यन् सरितः सरांसि च ।
वनं प्रविश्यैव विचित्रपादपं सुखी भविष्यामि तवास्तु निर्वृतिः ॥३७॥

37. phalāni mūlāni ca bhakṣayan vane girīṃśca paśyan saritaḥ sarāṃsi ca ,
vanaṃ praviśyaiva vicitrapādapaṃ sukhī bhaviṣyāmi tavāstu nirvṛtiḥ.
vanaṃ praviśyaiva vicitrapādapaṃ sukhī bhaviṣyāmi tavāstu nirvṛtiḥ.
37.
phalāni mūlāni ca bhakṣayan vane
girīn ca paśyan saritaḥ sarāṃsi ca

sukhī bhaviṣyāmi tava astu nirvṛtiḥ
girīn ca paśyan saritaḥ sarāṃsi ca

vane phalāni mūlāni ca bhakṣayan,
girīn ca saritaḥ sarāṃsi ca paśyan,

37.
Eating fruits and roots in the forest, and observing mountains, rivers, and lakes, indeed, by entering the forest with its wonderfully diverse trees, I shall be happy. May tranquility (nirvṛti) be yours.
