तामब्रवीन्महातेजा हनूमान्मारुतात्मजः ।
शिरस्यञ्जलिमाधाय सीतां मधुरया गिरा ॥१॥

1. Hanumān, the son of Maruta (the wind god), of great energy, spoke to Sītā with a sweet voice, reverently placing his joined palms on his head.

द्रुमस्य शाखामालम्ब्य तिष्ठसि त्वमनिन्दिता ॥२॥
2. kā nu padmapalāśākṣī kliṣṭakauśeyavāsinī ,

2. Who are you, O blameless one, whose eyes resemble lotus petals, clad in worn silk garments, standing while leaning on a tree branch?
किमर्थं तव नेत्राभ्यां वारि स्रवति शोकजम् ।
पुण्डरीकपलाशाभ्यां विप्रकीर्णमिवोदकम् ॥३॥
3. kimarthaṃ tava netrābhyāṃ vāri sravati śokajam ,
puṇḍarīkapalāśābhyāṃ viprakīrṇamivodakam.

3. Why does water, born of sorrow, flow from your eyes, as if water were sprinkled from two lotus petals?
सुराणामसुराणां च नागगन्धर्वरक्षसाम् ।
यक्षाणां किंनराणां च का त्वं भवसि शोभने ॥४॥
4. surāṇāmasurāṇāṃ ca nāgagandharvarakṣasām ,
yakṣāṇāṃ kiṃnarāṇāṃ ca kā tvaṃ bhavasi śobhane.

4. O beautiful one, who are you among the gods and demons, the nāgas, gandharvas, rakṣasas, yakṣas, and kinnaras?
का त्वं भवसि रुद्राणां मरुतां वा वरानने ।
वसूनां वा वरारोहे देवता प्रतिभासि मे ॥५॥
5. kā tvaṃ bhavasi rudrāṇāṃ marutāṃ vā varānane ,
vasūnāṃ vā varārohe devatā pratibhāsi me.

5. O fair-faced one, who are you among the Rudras or the Maruts? O lady of beautiful hips, you appear to me as a deity (devatā) among the Vasus.
किं नु चन्द्रमसा हीना पतिता विबुधालयात् ।
रोहिणी ज्योतिषां श्रेष्ठा श्रेष्ठा सर्वगुणान्विता ॥६॥
6. kiṃ nu candramasā hīnā patitā vibudhālayāt ,
rohiṇī jyotiṣāṃ śreṣṭhā śreṣṭhā sarvaguṇānvitā.
6. kim nu candramasā hīnā patitā vibudhālayāt
rohiṇī jyotiṣām śreṣṭhā śreṣṭhā sarvaguṇānvitā

6. Are you Rohiṇī, the most excellent of luminaries, endowed with all virtues, having fallen from the abode of the gods and abandoned by the moon?
कोपाद्वा यदि वा मोहाद्भर्तारमसितेक्षणा ।
वसिष्ठं कोपयित्वा त्वं नासि कल्याण्यरुन्धती ॥७॥
7. kopādvā yadi vā mohādbhartāramasitekṣaṇā ,
vasiṣṭhaṃ kopayitvā tvaṃ nāsi kalyāṇyarundhatī.
7. kopāt vā yadi vā mohāt bhartāram asitekṣaṇā |
Vasiṣṭham kopayitvā tvam na asi kalyāṇī Arundhatī
7. asitekṣaṇā,
tvam yadi kopāt vā mohāt vā bhartāram Vasiṣṭham kopayitvā,
kalyāṇī Arundhatī na asi.
7. Oh dark-eyed one, whether from anger or delusion, having enraged your husband Vasiṣṭha, you are not the auspicious Arundhatī.
को नौ पुत्रः पिता भ्रात भर्ता वा ते सुमध्यमे ।
अस्माल् लोकादमुं लोकं गतं त्वमनुशोचसि ॥८॥
8. ko nau putraḥ pitā bhrāta bhartā vā te sumadhyame ,
asmāl lokādamuṃ lokaṃ gataṃ tvamanuśocasi.
8. kaḥ nau putraḥ pitā bhrāta bhartā vā te sumadhyame
| asmāt lokāt amum lokam gatam tvam anuśocasi
8. sumadhyame,
tvam asmāt lokāt amum lokam gatam kaḥ nau putraḥ,
pitā,
bhrāta,
vā te bhartā,
anuśocasi?
8. O slender-waisted one, who among us – a son, father, brother, or your husband – having departed from this world to yonder world, do you grieve for?
व्यञ्जनानि हि ते यानि लक्षणानि च लक्षये ।
महिषी भूमिपालस्य राजकन्यासि मे मता ॥९॥
9. vyañjanāni hi te yāni lakṣaṇāni ca lakṣaye ,
mahiṣī bhūmipālasya rājakanyāsi me matā.
9. vyañjanāni hi te yāni lakṣaṇāni ca lakṣaye
| mahiṣī bhūmipālasya rājakanyā asi me matā
9. hi,
yāni vyañjanāni ca lakṣaṇāni te lakṣaye,
(tena tvam) bhūmipālasya mahiṣī vā rājakanyā asi,
iti me matā.
9. Indeed, by the distinguishing marks and auspicious signs that I perceive in you, I believe you are the chief queen of a king or a princess.
रावणेन जनस्थानाद्बलादपहृता यदि ।
सीता त्वमसि भद्रं ते तन्ममाचक्ष्व पृच्छतः ॥१०॥
10. rāvaṇena janasthānādbalādapahṛtā yadi ,
sītā tvamasi bhadraṃ te tanmamācakṣva pṛcchataḥ.
10. Rāvaṇena janasthānāt balāt apahṛtā yadi | Sītā
tvam asi bhadram te tat mama ācakṣva pṛcchataḥ
10. yadi tvam Rāvaṇena janasthānāt balāt apahṛtā Sītā asi,
(tarhi) te bhadram; tat mama pṛcchataḥ ācakṣva.
10. If you are Sītā, forcibly abducted by Rāvaṇa from Janasthāna, then may all be well for you; tell me that, as I ask.
सा तस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा रामकीर्तनहर्षिता ।
उवाच वाक्यं वैदेही हनूमन्तं द्रुमाश्रितम् ॥११॥
11. sā tasya vacanaṃ śrutvā rāmakīrtanaharṣitā ,
uvāca vākyaṃ vaidehī hanūmantaṃ drumāśritam.
11. sā tasya vacanam śrutvā rāmakīrtanaharṣitā
uvāca vākyam vaidehī hanūmantam drumāśritam
11. Delighted by hearing his words praising Rāma, Vaidehī spoke to Hanūmān, who was resting in the tree.
दुहिता जनकस्याहं वैदेहस्य महात्मनः ।
सीता च नाम नाम्नाहं भार्या रामस्य धीमतः ॥१२॥
12. duhitā janakasyāhaṃ vaidehasya mahātmanaḥ ,
sītā ca nāma nāmnāhaṃ bhāryā rāmasya dhīmataḥ.
12. duhitā janakasya aham vaidehasya mahātmanaḥ
sītā ca nāma nāmnā aham bhāryā rāmasya dhīmataḥ
12. I am Sītā by name, the daughter of the noble Janaka (Vaideha), and the wife of the wise Rāma.
समा द्वादश तत्राहं राघवस्य निवेशने ।
भुञ्जाना मानुषान्भोगान् सर्वकामसमृद्धिनी ॥१३॥
13. samā dvādaśa tatrāhaṃ rāghavasya niveśane ,
bhuñjānā mānuṣānbhogān sarvakāmasamṛddhinī.
13. samā dvādaśa tatra aham rāghavasya niveśane
bhuñjānā mānuṣān bhogān sarvakāmasamṛddhinī
13. For twelve years I lived there in Rāghava's residence, enjoying all human pleasures and endowed with the fulfillment of all desires.
ततस्त्रयोदशे वर्षे राज्येनेक्ष्वाकुनन्दनम् ।
अभिषेचयितुं राजा सोपाध्यायः प्रचक्रमे ॥१४॥
14. tatastrayodaśe varṣe rājyenekṣvākunandanam ,
abhiṣecayituṃ rājā sopādhyāyaḥ pracakrame.
14. tataḥ trayodaśe varṣe rājyena ikṣvākunandanam
abhiṣecayitum rājā sa-upādhyāyaḥ pracakrame
14. Then, in the thirteenth year, the king, accompanied by his preceptor, began to consecrate the delight of Ikṣvāku (Rāma) to the kingship.
तस्मिन् संभ्रियमाणे तु राघवस्याभिषेचने ।
कैकेयी नाम भर्तारं देवी वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१५॥
15. tasmin saṃbhriyamāṇe tu rāghavasyābhiṣecane ,
kaikeyī nāma bhartāraṃ devī vacanamabravīt.
15. tasmin saṃbhriyamāṇe tu rāghavasya abhiṣecane
kaikeyī nāma bhartāram devī vacanam abravīt
15. rāghavasya abhiṣecane tasmin saṃbhriyamāṇe tu
kaikeyī nāma devī bhartāram vacanam abravīt
15. While the consecration of Rāghava was being prepared, Queen Kaikeyī spoke these words to her husband.
न पिबेयं न खादेयं प्रत्यहं मम भोजनम् ।
एष मे जीवितस्यान्तो रामो यद्यभिषिच्यते ॥१६॥
16. na pibeyaṃ na khādeyaṃ pratyahaṃ mama bhojanam ,
eṣa me jīvitasyānto rāmo yadyabhiṣicyate.
16. na pibeyam na khādeyam prati aham mama bhojanam
eṣaḥ me jīvitasya antaḥ rāmaḥ yadi abhiṣicyate
16. mama bhojanam prati aham na pibeyam na khādeyam
yadi rāmaḥ abhiṣicyate eṣaḥ me jīvitasya antaḥ
16. I will neither drink nor eat my daily food. This will be the end of my life if Rāma is consecrated.
यत्तदुक्तं त्वया वाक्यं प्रीत्या नृपतिसत्तम ।
तच्चेन्न वितथं कार्यं वनं गच्छतु राघवः ॥१७॥
17. yattaduktaṃ tvayā vākyaṃ prītyā nṛpatisattama ,
taccenna vitathaṃ kāryaṃ vanaṃ gacchatu rāghavaḥ.
17. yat tat uktam tvayā vākyam prītyā nṛpatisattama
tat cet na vitatham kāryam vanam gacchatu rāghavaḥ
17. nṛpatisattama tvayā prītyā yat tat vākyam uktam
tat cet na vitatham kāryam rāghavaḥ vanam gacchatu
17. O best of kings, the word you spoke with affection - if that is not to be made false, then let Rāghava go to the forest.
स राजा सत्यवाग्देव्या वरदानमनुस्मरन् ।
मुमोह वचनं श्रुत्वा कैकेय्याः क्रूरमप्रियम् ॥१८॥
18. sa rājā satyavāgdevyā varadānamanusmaran ,
mumoha vacanaṃ śrutvā kaikeyyāḥ krūramapriyam.
18. saḥ rājā satyavāk devyā varadānam anusmaran
mumoha vacanam śrutvā kaikeyyāḥ krūram apriyam
18. saḥ rājā satyavāk devyā varadānam anusmaran
kaikeyyāḥ krūram apriyam vacanam śrutvā mumoha
18. That king, truthful in speech, remembering the boon (varadāna) given by the queen, became bewildered after hearing Kaikeyī's cruel and unpleasant words.
ततस्तु स्थविरो राजा सत्यधर्मे व्यवस्थितः ।
ज्येष्ठं यशस्विनं पुत्रं रुदन् राज्यमयाचत ॥१९॥
19. tatastu sthaviro rājā satyadharme vyavasthitaḥ ,
jyeṣṭhaṃ yaśasvinaṃ putraṃ rudan rājyamayācata.
19. tataḥ tu sthaviraḥ rājā satyadharme vyavasthitaḥ
jyeṣṭham yaśasvinam putram rudan rājyam ayācata
19. Then, the aged king, established in his natural law (dharma) of truth, weeping, begged for the kingdom for his eldest, renowned son.
स पितुर्वचनं श्रीमानभिषेकात् परं प्रियम् ।
मनसा पूर्वमासाद्य वाचा प्रतिगृहीतवान् ॥२०॥
20. sa piturvacanaṃ śrīmānabhiṣekāt paraṃ priyam ,
manasā pūrvamāsādya vācā pratigṛhītavān.
20. sa pituḥ vacanam śrīmān abhiṣekāt param priyam
manasā pūrvam āsādya vācā pratigṛhītavān
20. That glorious one, having first grasped in his mind his father's words, which were dearer than the coronation, then accepted them verbally.
दद्यान्न प्रतिगृह्णीयान्न ब्रूयत् किं चिदप्रियम् ।
अपि जीवितहेतोर्हि रामः सत्यपराक्रमः ॥२१॥
21. dadyānna pratigṛhṇīyānna brūyat kiṃ cidapriyam ,
api jīvitahetorhi rāmaḥ satyaparākramaḥ.
21. dadyāt na pratigṛhṇīyāt na brūyāt kim cit
apriyam api jīvitahetoḥ hi rāmaḥ satyaparākramaḥ
21. Even for the sake of his life, Rāma, whose valor was truth (satyaparākrama), would neither give (up his commitment) nor accept (what was improper), nor would he speak anything unpleasant.
स विहायोत्तरीयाणि महार्हाणि महायशाः ।
विसृज्य मनसा राज्यं जनन्यै मां समादिशत् ॥२२॥
22. sa vihāyottarīyāṇi mahārhāṇi mahāyaśāḥ ,
visṛjya manasā rājyaṃ jananyai māṃ samādiśat.
22. sa vihāya uttarīyāṇi mahārhāṇi mahāyaśāḥ
visṛjya manasā rājyam jananyai mām samādiśat
22. That highly renowned one, having cast aside his very valuable upper garments and having mentally renounced the kingdom, then ordered me to his mother.
साहं तस्याग्रतस्तूर्णं प्रस्थिता वनचारिणी ।
न हि मे तेन हीनाया वासः स्वर्गे ऽपि रोचते ॥२३॥
23. sāhaṃ tasyāgratastūrṇaṃ prasthitā vanacāriṇī ,
na hi me tena hīnāyā vāsaḥ svarge'pi rocate.
23. sā aham tasya agrataḥ tūrṇam prasthitā vanacāriṇī
na hi me tena hīnāyāḥ vāsaḥ svarge api rocate
23. sā aham vanacāriṇī tasya agrataḥ tūrṇam prasthitā.
hi tena hīnāyāḥ me svarge api vāsaḥ na rocate.
23. As a forest-dweller, I quickly set out ahead of him. Indeed, a residence, even in heaven, does not please me if I am separated from him.
प्रागेव तु महाभागः सौमित्रिर्मित्रनन्दनः ।
पूर्वजस्यानुयात्रार्थे द्रुमचीरैरलंकृतः ॥२४॥
24. prāgeva tu mahābhāgaḥ saumitrirmitranandanaḥ ,
pūrvajasyānuyātrārthe drumacīrairalaṃkṛtaḥ.
24. prāk eva tu mahābhāgaḥ saumitriḥ mitranandanaḥ
pūrvajasya anuyātrārthe drumacīraiḥ alaṅkṛtaḥ
24. tu prāk eva mahābhāgaḥ mitranandanaḥ saumitriḥ pūrvajasya anuyātrārthe drumacīraiḥ alaṅkṛtaḥ.
24. But even earlier, the highly fortunate Saumitri, the delight of his friends, had adorned himself with tree-bark garments to accompany his elder brother.
ते वयं भर्तुरादेशं बहु मान्यदृढव्रताः ।
प्रविष्टाः स्म पुराद्दृष्टं वनं गम्भीरदर्शनम् ॥२५॥
25. te vayaṃ bharturādeśaṃ bahu mānyadṛḍhavratāḥ ,
praviṣṭāḥ sma purāddṛṣṭaṃ vanaṃ gambhīradarśanam.
25. te vayam bhartuḥ ādeśam bahu mānyadṛḍhavratāḥ
praviṣṭāḥ sma purāt dṛṣṭam vanam gambhīradarśanam
25. te vayam bhartuḥ ādeśam bahu mānyadṛḍhavratāḥ,
purāt dṛṣṭam gambhīradarśanam vanam praviṣṭāḥ sma.
25. We, firm in our vows and greatly respecting our lord's command, entered that forest, which we had previously seen from the city and which was awe-inspiring to behold.
वसतो दण्डकारण्ये तस्याहममितौजसः ।
रक्षसापहृता भार्या रावणेन दुरात्मना ॥२६॥
26. vasato daṇḍakāraṇye tasyāhamamitaujasaḥ ,
rakṣasāpahṛtā bhāryā rāvaṇena durātmanā.
26. vasataḥ daṇḍakāraṇye tasya aham amitaujasaḥ
rakṣasā apahṛtā bhāryā rāvaṇena durātmanā
26. daṇḍakāraṇye vasataḥ tasya amitaujasaḥ bhāryā aham durātmanā rāvaṇena rakṣasā apahṛtā.
26. While he, of immeasurable might, was dwelling in the Daṇḍaka forest, I, his wife, was abducted by the evil-minded demon Rāvaṇa.
द्वौ मासौ तेन मे कालो जीवितानुग्रहः कृतः ।
ऊर्ध्वं द्वाभ्यां तु मासाभ्यां ततस्त्यक्ष्यामि जीवितम् ॥२७॥
27. dvau māsau tena me kālo jīvitānugrahaḥ kṛtaḥ ,
ūrdhvaṃ dvābhyāṃ tu māsābhyāṃ tatastyakṣyāmi jīvitam.
27. dvau māsau tena me kālaḥ jīvitānugrahaḥ kṛtaḥ
ūrdhvam dvābhyām tu māsābhyām tataḥ tyakṣyāmi jīvitam

27. He has granted me a period of two months as a favor of life. After these two months, I will then abandon my life.
