कस्य चित्त्वथ कालस्य सुमाली नाम राक्षसः ।
रसातलान्मर्त्यलोकं सर्वं वै विचचार ह ॥१॥

1. Then, after some time, a demon named Sumālī indeed roamed everywhere, from the netherworld to the mortal world.
नीलजीमूतसंकाशस्तप्तकाञ्चनकुण्डलः ।
कन्यां दुहितरं गृह्य विना पद्ममिव श्रियम् ।
अथापश्यत् स गच्छन्तं पुष्पकेण धनेश्वरम् ॥२॥
2. nīlajīmūtasaṃkāśastaptakāñcanakuṇḍalaḥ ,
kanyāṃ duhitaraṃ gṛhya vinā padmamiva śriyam ,
athāpaśyat sa gacchantaṃ puṣpakeṇa dhaneśvaram.

2. He, who resembled a dark cloud and wore earrings of molten gold, then saw the lord of wealth (Kubera) going by in the Puṣpaka aircraft, taking his daughter, just as Śrī (Lakṣmī) would appear without a lotus.
तं दृष्ट्वामरसंकाशं गच्छन्तं पावकोपमम् ।
अथाब्ब्रवीत् सुतां रक्षः कैकसीं नाम नामतः ॥३॥
3. taṃ dṛṣṭvāmarasaṃkāśaṃ gacchantaṃ pāvakopamam ,
athābbravīt sutāṃ rakṣaḥ kaikasīṃ nāma nāmataḥ.

3. Having seen him, who resembled a god and glowed like fire, the rākṣasa then spoke to his daughter named Kaikasī.
पुत्रि प्रदानकालो ऽयं यौवनं ते ऽतिवर्तते ।
त्वत्कृते च वयं सर्वे यन्त्रिता धर्मबुद्धयः ॥४॥
4. putri pradānakālo'yaṃ yauvanaṃ te'tivartate ,
tvatkṛte ca vayaṃ sarve yantritā dharmabuddhayaḥ.
4. putri pradāna-kālaḥ ayam yauvanam te ativartate
tvat-kṛte ca vayam sarve yantritāḥ dharma-buddhayaḥ
4. putri,
ayam pradāna-kālaḥ.
te yauvanam ativartate.

4. Daughter, this is the time for giving you away (in marriage); your youth is passing. For your sake, all of us, whose intellects are guided by natural law (dharma), are constrained.
त्वं हि सर्वगुणोपेता श्रीः सपद्मेव पुत्रिके ।
प्रत्याख्यानाच्च भीतैस्त्वं न वरैः प्रतिगृह्यसे ॥५॥
5. tvaṃ hi sarvaguṇopetā śrīḥ sapadmeva putrike ,
pratyākhyānācca bhītaistvaṃ na varaiḥ pratigṛhyase.
5. tvam hi sarva-guṇa-upetā śrīḥ sa-padmā iva putrike
pratyākhyānāt ca bhītaiḥ tvam na varaiḥ pratigṛhyase
5. putrike,
hi tvam sarva-guṇa-upetā sa-padmā śrīḥ iva (asi).
ca pratyākhyānāt bhītaiḥ varaiḥ tvam na pratigṛhyase
5. Indeed, my dear daughter, you are endowed with all good qualities, like Śrī (Lakṣmī) with her lotus. Yet, out of fear of rejection, you are not being accepted by suitors.
कन्यापितृत्वं दुःखं हि सर्वेषां मानकाङ्क्षिणाम् ।
न ज्ञायते च कः कन्यां वरयेदिति पुत्रिके ॥६॥
6. kanyāpitṛtvaṃ duḥkhaṃ hi sarveṣāṃ mānakāṅkṣiṇām ,
na jñāyate ca kaḥ kanyāṃ varayediti putrike.
6. kanyāpitṛtvam duḥkham hi sarveṣām mānakāṅkṣiṇām
na jñāyate ca kaḥ kanyām varayet iti putrike
6. putrike kanyāpitṛtvam hi sarveṣām mānakāṅkṣiṇām duḥkham,
ca kaḥ kanyām varayet iti na jñāyate
6. Indeed, the responsibility of being a daughter's father is a source of sorrow for all who seek respect. For it is not known, O daughter, who will choose this daughter as his bride.
मातुः कुलं पितृकुलं यत्र चैव प्रदीयते ।
कुलत्रयं सदा कन्या संशये स्थाप्य तिष्ठति ॥७॥
7. mātuḥ kulaṃ pitṛkulaṃ yatra caiva pradīyate ,
kulatrayaṃ sadā kanyā saṃśaye sthāpya tiṣṭhati.
7. mātuḥ kulam pitṛkulam yatra ca eva pradīyate
kulatrayam sadā kanyā saṃśaye sthāpya tiṣṭhati
7. kanyā sadā mātuḥ kulam pitṛkulam ca yatra eva
pradīyate [tat] kulatrayam saṃśaye sthāpya tiṣṭhati
7. A daughter always keeps three families in doubt: her mother's lineage, her father's lineage, and the lineage into which she is given. She remains in this state of uncertainty.
सा त्वं मुनिवरश्रेष्ठं प्रजापतिकुलोद्भवम् ।
गच्छ विश्रवसं पुत्रि पौलस्त्यं वरय स्वयम् ॥८॥
8. sā tvaṃ munivaraśreṣṭhaṃ prajāpatikulodbhavam ,
gaccha viśravasaṃ putri paulastyaṃ varaya svayam.

gaccha viśravasam putri paulastyam varaya svayam
8. putri sā tvam munivaraśreṣṭham prajāpatikulodbhavam

8. Therefore, O daughter, you yourself go and choose Viśravas, the foremost among excellent sages (muni) and one born in the lineage of Prajāpati, the descendant of Pulastya.
ईदृशास्ते भविष्यन्ति पुत्राः पुत्रि न संशयः ।
तेजसा भास्करसमा यादृशो ऽयं धनेश्वरः ॥९॥
9. īdṛśāste bhaviṣyanti putrāḥ putri na saṃśayaḥ ,
tejasā bhāskarasamā yādṛśo'yaṃ dhaneśvaraḥ.
9. īdṛśāḥ te bhaviṣyanti putrāḥ putri na saṃśayaḥ
tejasā bhāskarasamāḥ yādṛśaḥ ayam dhaneśvaraḥ
9. putri te putrāḥ īdṛśāḥ bhaviṣyanti,
na saṃśayaḥ.
tejasā bhāskarasamāḥ [bhaviṣyanti],
yādṛśaḥ ayam dhaneśvaraḥ [asti]
9. O daughter, without a doubt, your sons will be of such a nature: equal in splendor to the sun, just as this lord of wealth, Kubera, is.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे राम पुलस्त्यतनयो द्विजः ।
अग्निहोत्रमुपातिष्ठच्चतुर्थ इव पावकः ॥१०॥
10. etasminnantare rāma pulastyatanayo dvijaḥ ,
agnihotramupātiṣṭhaccaturtha iva pāvakaḥ.
10. etasmin antare rāma pulastyatanayaḥ dvijaḥ
agnihotram upātiṣṭhat caturthaḥ iva pāvakaḥ
10. At that moment, O Rāma, the son of Pulastya, a twice-born (dvija), began to perform the Vedic fire ritual (agnihotra), like a fourth fire.
सा तु तां दारुणां वेलामचिन्त्य पितृगौरवात् ।
उपसृत्याग्रतस्तस्य चरणाधोमुखी स्थिता ॥११॥
11. sā tu tāṃ dāruṇāṃ velāmacintya pitṛgauravāt ,
upasṛtyāgratastasya caraṇādhomukhī sthitā.
11. sā tu tām dāruṇām velām acintya pitṛgauravāt
upasṛtya agrataḥ tasya caraṇādhomukhī sthitā
11. But she, disregarding that dreadful time, out of profound respect for her father, approached him and stood before him with her face lowered towards his feet.
स तु तां वीक्ष्य सुश्रोणीं पूर्णचन्द्रनिभाननाम् ।
अब्रवीत् परमोदारो दीप्यमान इवौजसा ॥१२॥
12. sa tu tāṃ vīkṣya suśroṇīṃ pūrṇacandranibhānanām ,
abravīt paramodāro dīpyamāna ivaujasā.
12. saḥ tu tām vīkṣya suśroṇīm pūrṇacandranibhānanām
abravīt paramodāraḥ dīpyamānaḥ iva ojasā
12. But he, beholding her with beautiful hips and a face like the full moon, spoke, appearing exceedingly noble and shining with splendor.
भद्रे कस्यासि दुहिता कुतो वा त्वमिहागता ।
किं कार्यं कस्य वा हेतोस्तत्त्वतो ब्रूहि शोभने ॥१३॥
13. bhadre kasyāsi duhitā kuto vā tvamihāgatā ,
kiṃ kāryaṃ kasya vā hetostattvato brūhi śobhane.
13. bhadre kasyāḥ asi duhitā kutaḥ vā tvam iha āgatā
kim kāryam kasya vā hetoḥ tattvataḥ brūhi śobhane
13. O auspicious lady, whose daughter are you? From where have you come here? What is your purpose, or for what reason? Tell me the truth, O lovely one.
एवमुक्ता तु सा कन्या कृताञ्जलिरथाब्रवीत् ।
आत्मप्रभावेन मुने ज्ञातुमर्हसि मे मतम् ॥१४॥
14. evamuktā tu sā kanyā kṛtāñjalirathābravīt ,
ātmaprabhāvena mune jñātumarhasi me matam.
14. evam uktā tu sā kanyā kṛtāñjaliḥ atha abravīt
ātmaprabhāveṇa mune jñātum arhasi me matam
14. evam uktā tu sā kanyā kṛtāñjaliḥ atha abravīt
mune tvam ātmaprabhāveṇa me matam jñātum arhasi
14. Thus addressed, that maiden then spoke with folded hands: 'O sage (muni), you ought to know my intention through your own spiritual power.'
किं तु विद्धि हि मां ब्रह्मञ् शासनात् पितुरागताम् ।
कैकसी नाम नाम्नाहं शेषं त्वं ज्ञातुमर्हसि ॥१५॥
15. kiṃ tu viddhi hi māṃ brahmañ śāsanāt piturāgatām ,
kaikasī nāma nāmnāhaṃ śeṣaṃ tvaṃ jñātumarhasi.
15. kim tu viddhi hi mām brahman śāsanāt pituḥ āgatām
kaikasī nāma nāmnā aham śeṣam tvam jñātum arhasi
15. kim tu hi brahman pituḥ śāsanāt āgatām mām viddhi
aham nāmnā kaikasī nāma tvam śeṣam jñātum arhasi
15. O brahmin (brahman), know this: I have come by my father's command. My name is Kaikasī. You should be able to discern the rest.
स तु गत्वा मुनिर्ध्यानं वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ।
विज्ञातं ते मया भद्रे कारणं यन्मनोगतम् ॥१६॥
16. sa tu gatvā munirdhyānaṃ vākyametaduvāca ha ,
vijñātaṃ te mayā bhadre kāraṇaṃ yanmanogatam.
16. saḥ tu gatvā muniḥ dhyānam vākyam etat uvāca ha
vijñātam te mayā bhadre kāraṇam yat manogatam
16. saḥ muniḥ tu dhyānam gatvā etat vākyam ha uvāca
bhadre yat manogatam kāraṇam te mayā vijñātam
16. But that sage, having gone into meditation (dhyāna), then spoke this: 'O auspicious one, I have understood the intention that is in your mind.'
दारुणायां तु वेलायां यस्मात्त्वं मामुपस्थिता ।
शृणु तस्मात् सुतान्भद्रे यादृशाञ्जनयिष्यसि ॥१७॥
17. dāruṇāyāṃ tu velāyāṃ yasmāttvaṃ māmupasthitā ,
śṛṇu tasmāt sutānbhadre yādṛśāñjanayiṣyasi.
17. dāruṇāyām tu velāyām yasmāt tvam mām upasthitā
śṛṇu tasmāt sutān bhadre yādṛśān janayiṣyasi
17. bhadre yasmāt tvam dāruṇāyām velāyām mām
upasthitā tasmāt yādṛśān sutān janayiṣyasi śṛṇu
17. Because you approached me at this dreadful hour, O auspicious one, listen now to the kind of sons you will bear.
दारुणान्दारुणाकारान्दारुणाभिजनप्रियान् ।
प्रसविष्यसि सुश्रोणि राक्षसान् क्रूरकर्मणः ॥१८॥
18. dāruṇāndāruṇākārāndāruṇābhijanapriyān ,
prasaviṣyasi suśroṇi rākṣasān krūrakarmaṇaḥ.
18. dāruṇān dāruṇā-ākārān dāruṇā-abhijana-priyān
prasaviṣyasi suśroṇi rākṣasān krūra-karmaṇaḥ
18. suśroṇi tvam dāruṇān dāruṇā-ākārān dāruṇā-abhijana-priyān
krūra-karmaṇaḥ rākṣasān prasaviṣyasi
18. O beautiful-hipped one, you will give birth to rākṣasas (demons) who are dreadful, of terrifying appearance, devoted to dreadful kin, and whose actions are cruel.
सा तु तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा प्रणिपत्याब्रवीद्वचः ।
भगवन्नेदृशाः पुत्रास्त्वत्तो ऽर्हा ब्रह्मयोनितः ॥१९॥
19. sā tu tadvacanaṃ śrutvā praṇipatyābravīdvacaḥ ,
bhagavannedṛśāḥ putrāstvatto'rhā brahmayonitaḥ.
19. sā tu tat vacanam śrutvā praṇipatya abravīt vacaḥ |
bhagavan īdṛśāḥ putrāḥ tvattaḥ arhāḥ brahma-yonitaḥ
19. sā tu tat vacanam śrutvā praṇipatya vacaḥ abravīt bhagavan,
īdṛśāḥ putrāḥ brahma-yonitaḥ tvattaḥ arhāḥ
19. But she, having heard those words, bowed down and said: 'O revered one, are such sons suitable from you, a sage born of (brahman)?'
अथाब्रवीन्मुनिस्तत्र पश्चिमो यस्तवात्मजः ।
मम वंशानुरूपश्च धर्मात्मा च भविष्यति ॥२०॥
20. athābravīnmunistatra paścimo yastavātmajaḥ ,
mama vaṃśānurūpaśca dharmātmā ca bhaviṣyati.
20. atha abravīt muniḥ tatra paścimaḥ yaḥ tava ātmajaḥ
| mama vaṃśa-anurūpaḥ ca dharmātmā ca bhaviṣyati
20. atha muniḥ tatra abravīt yaḥ tava paścimaḥ ātmajaḥ,
saḥ mama vaṃśa-anurūpaḥ ca dharmātmā ca bhaviṣyati
20. Then the sage said, 'The last son of yours, who will be born, will be worthy of my lineage and possess a righteous soul (dharmātmā).'
एवमुक्ता तु सा कन्या राम कालेन केन चित् ।
जनयामास बीभत्सं रक्षोरूपं सुदारुणम् ॥२१॥
21. evamuktā tu sā kanyā rāma kālena kena cit ,
janayāmāsa bībhatsaṃ rakṣorūpaṃ sudāruṇam.
21. evam uktā tu sā kanyā rāma kālena kena cit |
janayāmāsa bībhatsam rakṣo-rūpam su-dāruṇam
21. rāma,
evam uktā tu sā kanyā kena cit kālena bībhatsam rakṣo-rūpam su-dāruṇam janayāmāsa
21. O Rāma, after being addressed thus, that maiden, after some time, gave birth to a grotesque, demon-formed, and utterly dreadful being.
दशशीर्षं महादंष्ट्रं नीलाञ्जनचयोपमम् ।
ताम्रौष्ठं विंशतिभुजं महास्यं दीप्तमूर्धजम् ॥२२॥
22. daśaśīrṣaṃ mahādaṃṣṭraṃ nīlāñjanacayopamam ,
tāmrauṣṭhaṃ viṃśatibhujaṃ mahāsyaṃ dīptamūrdhajam.
22. daśaśīrṣam mahādaṃṣṭram nīlāñjanacayopamam
tāmrauṣṭham viṃśatibhujam mahāsyam dīptamūrdhajam
22. daśaśīrṣam mahādaṃṣṭram nīlāñjanacayopamam
tāmrauṣṭham viṃśatibhujam mahāsyam dīptamūrdhajam
22. He was ten-headed, with great fangs, and resembled a heap of black collyrium. He had copper lips, twenty arms, a massive mouth, and blazing hair.
जातमात्रे ततस्तस्मिन् सज्वालकवलाः शिवाः ।
क्रव्यादाश्चापसव्यानि मण्डलानि प्रचक्रिरे ॥२३॥
23. jātamātre tatastasmin sajvālakavalāḥ śivāḥ ,
kravyādāścāpasavyāni maṇḍalāni pracakrire.
23. jātamātre tataḥ tasmin sajjvālākavalāḥ śivāḥ
kravyādāḥ ca apasavyāni maṇḍalāni pracakrire
23. tataḥ tasmin jātamātre sajjvālākavalāḥ śivāḥ
ca kravyādāḥ apasavyāni maṇḍalāni pracakrire
23. Then, immediately upon his birth, jackals with fiery mouths and other carnivorous beasts made inauspicious circles, moving in a counter-clockwise direction.
ववर्ष रुधिरं देवो मेघाश्च खरनिस्वनाः ।
प्रबभौ न च खे सूर्यो महोल्काश्चापतन्भुवि ॥२४॥
24. vavarṣa rudhiraṃ devo meghāśca kharanisvanāḥ ,
prababhau na ca khe sūryo maholkāścāpatanbhuvi.
24. vavarṣa rudhiram devaḥ meghāḥ ca kharanisvanāḥ
prababhau na ca khe sūryaḥ mahāulkāḥ ca āpatan bhuvi
24. devaḥ rudhiram vavarṣa ca meghāḥ kharanisvanāḥ (āsīt)
ca sūryaḥ khe na prababhau ca mahāulkāḥ bhuvi āpatan
24. The sky rained blood, and the clouds roared with harsh sounds. The sun did not shine in the sky, and great meteors fell upon the earth.
अथ नामाकरोत्तस्य पितामहसमः पिता ।
दशशीर्षः प्रसूतो ऽयं दशग्रीवो भविष्यति ॥२५॥
25. atha nāmākarottasya pitāmahasamaḥ pitā ,
daśaśīrṣaḥ prasūto'yaṃ daśagrīvo bhaviṣyati.
25. atha nāma akarot tasya pitāmahasamaḥ pitā
daśaśīrṣaḥ prasūtaḥ ayam daśagrīvaḥ bhaviṣyati
25. atha pitā pitāmahasamaḥ tasya nāma akarot (iti)
ayam daśaśīrṣaḥ prasūtaḥ daśagrīvaḥ bhaviṣyati
25. Then, his father, who was equal to his grandfather, named him: 'This one, born ten-headed, will be Daśagrīva (Ten-necked).'
तस्य त्वनन्तरं जातः कुम्भकर्णो महाबलः ।
प्रमाणाद् यस्य विपुलं प्रमाणं नेह विद्यते ॥२६॥
26. tasya tvanantaraṃ jātaḥ kumbhakarṇo mahābalaḥ ,
pramāṇād yasya vipulaṃ pramāṇaṃ neha vidyate.
26. tasya tu anantaram jātaḥ kumbhakarṇaḥ mahābalaḥ
pramāṇāt yasya vipulam pramāṇam na iha vidyate
26. tasya anantaram tu mahābalaḥ kumbhakarṇaḥ jātaḥ
yasya vipulam pramāṇam iha pramāṇāt na vidyate
26. Immediately after him, the immensely powerful Kumbhakarna was born, whose vast physical size cannot be adequately measured by any existing standard here.
ततः शूर्पणखा नाम संजज्ञे विकृतानना ।
विभीषणश्च धर्मात्मा कैकस्याः पश्चिमः सुतः ॥२७॥
27. tataḥ śūrpaṇakhā nāma saṃjajñe vikṛtānanā ,
vibhīṣaṇaśca dharmātmā kaikasyāḥ paścimaḥ sutaḥ.
27. tataḥ śūrpaṇakhā nāma sañjajñe vikṛtānanā
vibhīṣaṇaḥ ca dharmātmā kaikasāyāḥ paścimaḥ sutaḥ
27. tataḥ vikṛtānanā śūrpaṇakhā nāma sañjajñe ca
dharmātmā vibhīṣaṇaḥ kaikasāyāḥ paścimaḥ sutaḥ
27. After them, Shurpanakha, known for her deformed face, was born. And Vibhishana, a soul embodying righteousness (dharmātmā), was Kaikesi's last son.
ते तु तत्र महारण्ये ववृधुः सुमहौजसः ।
तेषां क्रूरो दशग्रीवो लोकोद्वेगकरो ऽभवत् ॥२८॥
28. te tu tatra mahāraṇye vavṛdhuḥ sumahaujasaḥ ,
teṣāṃ krūro daśagrīvo lokodvegakaro'bhavat.
28. te tu tatra mahāraṇye vavṛdhuḥ sumahaujasaḥ
teṣām krūraḥ daśagrīvaḥ lokodvegakaraḥ abhavat
28. te sumahaujasaḥ tu tatra mahāraṇye vavṛdhuḥ
teṣām krūraḥ daśagrīvaḥ lokodvegakaraḥ abhavat
28. They, possessing immense might, grew up there in that great forest. Among them, the cruel Dashagriva became a cause of great distress to all beings.
कुम्भकर्णः प्रमत्तस्तु महर्षीन्धर्मसंश्रितान् ।
त्रैलोक्यं त्रासयन्दुष्टो भक्षयन् विचचार ह ॥२९॥
29. kumbhakarṇaḥ pramattastu maharṣīndharmasaṃśritān ,
trailokyaṃ trāsayanduṣṭo bhakṣayan vicacāra ha.
29. kumbhakarṇaḥ pramattaḥ tu maharṣīn dharmasaṃśritān
trailokyam trāsayat duṣṭaḥ bhakṣayan vicacāra ha
29. pramattaḥ duṣṭaḥ kumbhakarṇaḥ tu dharmasaṃśritān
maharṣīn trailokyam trāsayat bhakṣayan ha vicacāra
29. But Kumbhakarna, reckless and wicked, wandered about, terrifying the great sages who adhered to (dharma), frightening all three worlds, and devouring beings.
विभीषणस्तु धर्मात्मा नित्यं धर्मपथे स्थितः ।
स्वाध्यायनियताहार उवास नियतेन्द्रियः ॥३०॥
30. vibhīṣaṇastu dharmātmā nityaṃ dharmapathe sthitaḥ ,
svādhyāyaniyatāhāra uvāsa niyatendriyaḥ.
30. vibhīṣaṇaḥ tu dharmātmā nityaṃ dharmapathe
sthitaḥ svādhyāyaniyatāhāraḥ uvāsa niyatendriyaḥ
30. Vibhishana, whose intrinsic nature (dharma) was righteousness, always remained steadfast on the path of natural law (dharma). He lived with disciplined senses and a regulated diet, dedicated to self-study.
अथ वित्तेश्वरो देवस्तत्र कालेन केन चित् ।
आगच्छत् पितरं द्रष्टुं पुष्पकेण महौजसं ॥३१॥

31. Then, the god Kubera, the lord of wealth, arrived there at some point, traveling by his Pushpaka aerial chariot, to see his mighty father.
तं दृष्ट्वा कैकसी तत्र ज्वलन्तमिव तेजसा ।
आस्थाय राक्षसीं बुद्धिं दशग्रीवमुवाच ह ॥३२॥
32. taṃ dṛṣṭvā kaikasī tatra jvalantamiva tejasā ,
āsthāya rākṣasīṃ buddhiṃ daśagrīvamuvāca ha.

32. Upon seeing him (Kubera) there, blazing as if with brilliance, Kaikasi, adopting a demonic attitude, spoke to Dashagriva (Ravana).
पुत्रवैश्रवणं पश्य भ्रातरं तेजसा वृतम् ।
भ्रातृभावे समे चापि पश्यात्मानं त्वमीदृशम् ॥३३॥
33. putravaiśravaṇaṃ paśya bhrātaraṃ tejasā vṛtam ,
bhrātṛbhāve same cāpi paśyātmānaṃ tvamīdṛśam.
33. putra vaiśravaṇaṃ paśya bhrātaraṃ tejasā vṛtam
bhrātṛbhāve same ca api paśya ātmānaṃ tvaṃ īdṛśam
33. O son, behold your brother Vaiśravaṇa, endowed with such brilliance! And look at yourself, in this state, even though you are his equal in brotherhood.
दशग्रीव तथा यत्नं कुरुष्वामितविक्रम ।
यथा भवसि मे पुत्र शीघ्रं वैश्वरणोपमः ॥३४॥
34. daśagrīva tathā yatnaṃ kuruṣvāmitavikrama ,
yathā bhavasi me putra śīghraṃ vaiśvaraṇopamaḥ.

34. O Daśagrīva, you of immeasurable prowess, make such an effort, my son, that you quickly become comparable to Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera).
मातुस्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा दशग्रीवः प्रतापवान् ।
अमर्षमतुलं लेभे प्रतिज्ञां चाकरोत्तदा ॥३५॥
35. mātustadvacanaṃ śrutvā daśagrīvaḥ pratāpavān ,
amarṣamatulaṃ lebhe pratijñāṃ cākarottadā.
35. mātuḥ tat vacanam śrutvā daśagrīvaḥ pratāpavān
amarṣam atulam lebhe pratijñām ca akarot tadā
35. pratāpavān daśagrīvaḥ mātuḥ tat vacanam śrutvā

35. Having heard that statement from his mother, the powerful Daśagrīva felt immeasurable indignation and then made a vow.
सत्यं ते प्रतिजानामि तुल्यो भ्रात्राधिको ऽपि वा ।
भविष्याम्यचिरान्मातः संतापं त्यज हृद्गतम् ॥३६॥
36. satyaṃ te pratijānāmi tulyo bhrātrādhiko'pi vā ,
bhaviṣyāmyacirānmātaḥ saṃtāpaṃ tyaja hṛdgatam.
36. satyam te pratijānāmi tulyaḥ bhrātrā adhikaḥ api
vā bhaviṣyāmi acirāt mātaḥ saṃtāpam tyaja hṛdgatam
36. mātaḥ te satyam pratijānāmi acirāt bhrātrā tulyaḥ
adhikaḥ api vā bhaviṣyāmi hṛdgatam saṃtāpam tyaja
36. O mother, I truly promise you that I shall soon become equal to my brother, or even superior to him. Abandon the sorrow held within your heart.
ततः क्रोधेन तेनैव दशग्रीवः सहानुजः ।
प्राप्स्यामि तपसा काममिति कृत्वाध्यवस्य च ।
आगच्छदात्मसिद्ध्यर्थं गोकर्णस्याश्रमं शुभम् ॥३७॥
37. tataḥ krodhena tenaiva daśagrīvaḥ sahānujaḥ ,
prāpsyāmi tapasā kāmamiti kṛtvādhyavasya ca ,
āgacchadātmasiddhyarthaṃ gokarṇasyāśramaṃ śubham.
37. tataḥ krodhena tena eva daśagrīvaḥ
sahānujaḥ prāpsyāmi tapasā kāmam iti
kṛtvā adhyavasya ca āgacchat
ātmasiddhyartham gokarṇasya āśramam śubham

daśagrīvaḥ 'tapasā kāmam prāpsyāmi' iti
kṛtvā ca adhyavasya ātmasiddhyartham
gokarṇasya śubham āśramam āgacchat
37. Then, filled with that very anger, Daśagrīva, accompanied by his younger brother, resolved to obtain his desire through asceticism (tapas). For the sake of his self-accomplishment (ātmasiddhi), he went to the auspicious hermitage (āśrama) of Gokarna.
