तप्यमाने तपो देवे देवाः सर्षिगणाः पुरा ।

1. tapyamāne tapo deve devāḥ sarṣigaṇāḥ purā ,

Long ago, while the god (Śiva) was performing severe penance (tapas), the gods, accompanied by hosts of sages, desiring a commander-in-chief, approached Pitāmaha (Brahmā).
ततो ऽब्रुवन् सुराः सर्वे भगवन्तं पितामहम् ।
प्रणिपत्य शुभं वाक्यं सेन्द्राः साग्निपुरोगमाः ॥२॥

2. tato'bruvan surāḥ sarve bhagavantaṃ pitāmaham ,
praṇipatya śubhaṃ vākyaṃ sendrāḥ sāgnipurogamāḥ.

tataḥ abruvan surāḥ sarve bhagavantaṃ pitāmaham

Then, all the gods, led by Indra and having Agni as their vanguard, having bowed down, spoke auspicious words to the venerable Pitāmaha (Brahmā).
यो नः सेनापतिर्देव दत्तो भगवता पुरा ।
स तपः परमास्थाय तप्यते स्म सहोमया ॥३॥

O Lord (Shiva), the one who was formerly designated as our commander by the revered Lord (Brahma) - that very person (you) was performing the highest austerity (tapas) along with Uma.
यदत्रानन्तरं कार्यं लोकानां हितकाम्यया ।
संविधत्स्व विधानज्ञ त्वं हि नः परमा गतिः ॥४॥

4. yadatrānantaraṃ kāryaṃ lokānāṃ hitakāmyayā ,

O expert in procedures, please accomplish whatever task is immediately required here for the welfare of the beings (or worlds). For you are indeed our ultimate refuge.
देवतानां वचः श्रुत्वा सर्वलोकपितामहः ।
सान्त्वयन्मधुरैर्वाक्यैस्त्रिदशानिदमब्रवीत् ॥५॥

Having heard the words of the gods, the grandfather of all worlds (Brahma), consoling the thirty (gods) with sweet words, spoke this.
शैलपुत्र्या यदुक्तं तन्न प्रजास्यथ पत्निषु ।
तस्या वचनमक्लिष्टं सत्यमेव न संशयः ॥६॥

6. śailaputryā yaduktaṃ tanna prajāsyatha patniṣu ,

What was spoken by the daughter of the mountain (Parvati) - that you shall not beget offspring in your wives - that statement of hers is unassailable. It is indeed the truth; there is no doubt.
इयमाकाशगा गङ्गा यस्यां पुत्रं हुताशनः ।
जनयिष्यति देवानां सेनापतिमरिंदमम् ॥७॥

7. iyamākāśagā gaṅgā yasyāṃ putraṃ hutāśanaḥ ,
janayiṣyati devānāṃ senāpatimariṃdamam.

In this heavenly Gaṅgā, Agni will father a son who will be the commander-in-chief of the gods and a subduer of enemies.
ज्येष्ठा शैलेन्द्रदुहिता मानयिष्यति तं सुतम् ।
उमायास्तद्बहुमतं भविष्यति न संशयः ॥८॥

8. jyeṣṭhā śailendraduhitā mānayiṣyati taṃ sutam ,
umāyāstadbahumataṃ bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ.

The elder daughter of the king of mountains will honor that son. This will be highly approved by Umā; there is no doubt.
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य कृतार्था रघुनन्दन ।

9. tacchrutvā vacanaṃ tasya kṛtārthā raghunandana ,

O Raghunandana, having heard his words, all the gods, their purpose accomplished, bowed down and worshipped the Grandfather.
ते गत्वा पर्वतं राम कैलासं धातुमण्डितम् ।
अग्निं नियोजयामासुः पुत्रार्थं सर्वदेवताः ॥१०॥

10. te gatvā parvataṃ rāma kailāsaṃ dhātumaṇḍitam ,
agniṃ niyojayāmāsuḥ putrārthaṃ sarvadevatāḥ.

O Rāma, having gone to Mount Kailāsa, which was adorned with minerals, all the gods engaged Agni for the sake of a son.
देवकार्यमिदं देव समाधत्स्व हुताशन ।
शैलपुत्र्यां महातेजो गङ्गायां तेज उत्सृज ॥११॥

11. devakāryamidaṃ deva samādhatsva hutāśana ,
śailaputryāṃ mahātejo gaṅgāyāṃ teja utsṛja.

O god, O Agni (hutāśana), O greatly effulgent one! Undertake this divine task. Release your fiery energy (tejas) into Gaṅgā, [rather than] in Śailaputrī.
देवतानां प्रतिज्ञाय गङ्गामभ्येत्य पावकः ।
गर्भं धारय वै देवि देवतानामिदं प्रियम् ॥१२॥

12. devatānāṃ pratijñāya gaṅgāmabhyetya pāvakaḥ ,

Having made a promise to the gods, Agni (pāvakaḥ) approached Gaṅgā. (He said to her,) 'O goddess, indeed, bear this embryo (garbham); this is pleasing to the gods.'
इत्येतद्वचनं श्रुत्वा दिव्यं रूपमधारयत् ।
स तस्या महिमां दृष्ट्वा समन्तादवकीर्यत ॥१३॥

13. ityetadvacanaṃ śrutvā divyaṃ rūpamadhārayat ,
sa tasyā mahimāṃ dṛṣṭvā samantādavakīryata.

Having heard this speech, she (Gaṅgā) assumed a divine form. Having seen her greatness (mahimā), he (Agni) discharged [his seed] all around.
समन्ततस्तदा देवीमभ्यषिञ्चत पावकः ।
सर्वस्रोतांसि पूर्णानि गङ्गाया रघुनन्दन ॥१४॥

14. samantatastadā devīmabhyaṣiñcata pāvakaḥ ,
sarvasrotāṃsi pūrṇāni gaṅgāyā raghunandana.

Then, Agni (pāvakaḥ) completely poured [his seed] upon the goddess (devīm). O joy of the Raghus (raghunandana), all the channels of Gaṅgā became full.
तमुवाच ततो गङ्गा सर्वदेवपुरोहितम् ।
अशक्ता धारणे देव तव तेजः समुद्धतम् ।
दह्यमानाग्निना तेन संप्रव्यथितचेतना ॥१५॥

tataḥ gaṅgā sarvadevapurohitam tam

15.
Then Gaṅgā spoke to him, the priest of all the gods: 'O god, I am unable to bear your exceedingly intense radiance. My consciousness is greatly distressed, being consumed by that very fire.'
अथाब्रवीदिदं गङ्गां सर्वदेवहुताशनः ।
इह हैमवते पादे गर्भो ऽयं संनिवेश्यताम् ॥१६॥

16. athābravīdidaṃ gaṅgāṃ sarvadevahutāśanaḥ ,
iha haimavate pāde garbho'yaṃ saṃniveśyatām.

Then Agni, who consumes offerings for all the gods, said this to Gaṅgā: 'Let this embryo be deposited here on the slope of the Himavat (Himalayas).'
श्रुत्वा त्वग्निवचो गङ्गा तं गर्भमतिभास्वरम् ।
उत्ससर्ज महातेजाः स्रोतोभ्यो हि तदानघ ॥१७॥

17. śrutvā tvagnivaco gaṅgā taṃ garbhamatibhāsvaram ,
utsasarja mahātejāḥ srotobhyo hi tadānagha.

mahātejāḥ gaṅgā tadā tam atibhāsvaram garbham hi srotobhyaḥ utsasarja.

17.
Indeed, having heard Agni's words, Gaṅgā, the one of great effulgence, then discharged that exceedingly brilliant embryo from her streams, O sinless one.
यदस्या निर्गतं तस्मात्तप्तजाम्बूनदप्रभम् ।
काञ्चनं धरणीं प्राप्तं हिरण्यममलं शुभम् ॥१८॥

18. yadasyā nirgataṃ tasmāttaptajāmbūnadaprabham ,
kāñcanaṃ dharaṇīṃ prāptaṃ hiraṇyamamalaṃ śubham.

18.
yat asyāḥ nirgatam tasmāt taptajāmbūnadaprabham
kāñcanam dharaṇīm prāptam hiraṇyam amalam śubham
kāñcanam dharaṇīm prāptam hiraṇyam amalam śubham

yat (tejaḥ) tasmāt asyāḥ nirgatam,
(tat) taptajāmbūnadaprabham (sat),
kāñcanam amalam śubham hiraṇyam dharaṇīm prāptam (abhavat).
(tat) taptajāmbūnadaprabham (sat),
kāñcanam amalam śubham hiraṇyam dharaṇīm prāptam (abhavat).
18.
Whatever flowed from her (Gaṅgā) from that embryo, shining with the luster of refined gold, became pure and auspicious gold when it reached the earth.
ताम्रं कार्ष्णायसं चैव तैक्ष्ण्यादेवाभिजायत ।
मलं तस्याभवत्तत्र त्रपुसीसकमेव च ॥१९॥

19. tāmraṃ kārṣṇāyasaṃ caiva taikṣṇyādevābhijāyata ,
malaṃ tasyābhavattatra trapusīsakameva ca.

Copper and iron, indeed, were produced from their inherent keenness. There, their impurities became tin and lead.
तदेतद्धरणीं प्राप्य

This very substance, upon reaching the earth, developed into numerous kinds of metals.
निक्षिप्तमात्रे गर्भे तु तेजोभिरभिरञ्जितम् ।
सर्वं पर्वतसंनद्धं सौवर्णमभवद्वनम् ॥२१॥

21. nikṣiptamātre garbhe tu tejobhirabhirañjitam ,
sarvaṃ parvatasaṃnaddhaṃ sauvarṇamabhavadvanam.

But when the deposited essence was just (nikṣiptamātre garbhe tu) imbued with splendors (tejobhiḥ), the entire forest, spanning the mountains (parvatasaṃnaddham), became golden.
जातरूपमिति ख्यातं तदा प्रभृति राघव ।
सुवर्णं पुरुषव्याघ्र हुताशनसमप्रभम् ॥२२॥

22. jātarūpamiti khyātaṃ tadā prabhṛti rāghava ,
suvarṇaṃ puruṣavyāghra hutāśanasamaprabham.

From that time onwards, O Rāghava, it has been known as jātarūpa (natural gold). This gold, O tiger among men, shines with the brilliance of fire.
तं कुमारं ततो जातं सेन्द्राः सहमरुद्गणाः ।
क्षीरसंभावनार्थाय कृत्तिकाः समयोजयन् ॥२३॥

23. taṃ kumāraṃ tato jātaṃ sendrāḥ sahamarudgaṇāḥ ,
kṣīrasaṃbhāvanārthāya kṛttikāḥ samayojayan.

Then, Indra, along with the groups of Maruts, appointed the Krittikas to provide milk for that boy who was born.

Having made an excellent agreement, they gave milk to the newborn, resolute in their belief, "This son belongs to all of us."

Then, all the gods declared, "This son will be known as Kartikeya, renowned throughout the three worlds; there is no doubt about it."

Having heard their words, they bathed the child, who had emerged from the spilled generative fluid, with great splendor, as he was shining brightly like fire.

The gods called him Skanda because he was spilled from the womb's fluid. O descendant of Kakutstha (Rama), they called that greatly fortunate Kartikeya one who was like blazing fire.

Then, excellent milk (kṣīra) appeared from the Krittikas. Becoming six-faced for the six of them, he drank their breast-born milk.
गृहीत्वा क्षीरमेकाह्ना सुकुमार वपुस्तदा ।
अजयत् स्वेन वीर्येण दैत्यसैन्यगणान् विभुः ॥२९॥

Having taken the milk, then, with a tender body, in a single day, that powerful lord (vibhu) conquered the hordes of demon armies by his own valor.

Then, having assembled with Agni as their leader, the hosts of gods anointed him, that commander-in-chief of the divine armies, who possessed immaculate splendor.
