तच्छ्रुत्वा भाषितं तस्य रामस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः ।
द्वाःस्थः कुमारावाहूय राघवाय न्यवेदयत् ॥१॥
1. tacchrutvā bhāṣitaṃ tasya rāmasyākliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ ,
dvāḥsthaḥ kumārāvāhūya rāghavāya nyavedayat.

1. Having heard those words of Rāma, whose actions were unblemished, the doorkeeper summoned the two princes and reported to Rāghava (Rāma).
दृष्ट्वा तु राघवः प्राप्तौ प्रियौ भरतलक्ष्मणौ ।
परिष्वज्य ततो रामो वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ॥२॥
2. dṛṣṭvā tu rāghavaḥ prāptau priyau bharatalakṣmaṇau ,
pariṣvajya tato rāmo vākyametaduvāca ha.

pariṣvajya tataḥ rāmaḥ vākyam etat uvāca ha

2. Indeed, Rāghava (Rāma), having seen his beloved Bharata and Lakṣmaṇa who had arrived, then embraced them and spoke these words.
कृतं मया यथातथ्यं द्विजकार्यमनुत्तमम् ।
धर्मसेतुमतो भूयः कर्तुमिच्छामि राघवौ ॥३॥
3. kṛtaṃ mayā yathātathyaṃ dvijakāryamanuttamam ,
dharmasetumato bhūyaḥ kartumicchāmi rāghavau.
3. kṛtam mayā yathātathyam dvijakāryam anuttamam
dharma-setum ataḥ bhūyaḥ kartum icchāmi rāghavau
3. rāghavau mayā yathātathyam anuttamam dvijakāryam
kṛtam ataḥ bhūyaḥ dharma-setum kartum icchāmi
3. O Rāghavas, I have truly and excellently performed the duty of a twice-born (dvija). Therefore, I desire to further establish the foundation of natural law (dharma).
युवाभ्यामात्मभूताभ्यां राजसूयमनुत्तमम् ।
सहितो यष्टुमिच्छामि तत्र धर्मो हि शाश्वतः ॥४॥
4. yuvābhyāmātmabhūtābhyāṃ rājasūyamanuttamam ,
sahito yaṣṭumicchāmi tatra dharmo hi śāśvataḥ.
4. yuvābhyām ātmabhūtābhyām rājasūyam anuttamam
sahitaḥ yaṣṭum icchāmi tatra dharmaḥ hi śāśvataḥ
4. ātmabhūtābhyām yuvābhyām sahitaḥ anuttamam
rājasūyam yaṣṭum icchāmi tatra hi dharmaḥ śāśvataḥ
4. With you two, who are as dear as my own self, I desire to perform the unsurpassed royal consecration (rājasūya) Vedic ritual. For in that, the natural law (dharma) is indeed eternal.
इष्ट्वा तु राजसूयेन मित्रः शत्रुनिबर्हणः ।
सुहुतेन सुयज्ञेन वरुणत्वमुपागमत् ॥५॥
5. iṣṭvā tu rājasūyena mitraḥ śatrunibarhaṇaḥ ,
suhutena suyajñena varuṇatvamupāgamat.
5. iṣṭvā tu rājasūyena mitraḥ śatrunibarhaṇaḥ
suhutena suyajñena varuṇatvam upāgamat
5. tu śatrunibarhaṇaḥ mitraḥ rājasūyena
suhutena suyajñena iṣṭvā varuṇatvam upāgamat
5. Indeed, Mitra, the destroyer of enemies, having performed the royal consecration (rājasūya) through a well-offered (homa) and proper Vedic ritual (yajña), attained the state of Varuṇa.
सोमश्च राजसूयेन इष्ट्वा धर्मेण धर्मवित् ।
प्राप्तश्च सर्वलोकानां कीर्तिं स्थानं च शाश्वतम् ॥६॥
6. somaśca rājasūyena iṣṭvā dharmeṇa dharmavit ,
prāptaśca sarvalokānāṃ kīrtiṃ sthānaṃ ca śāśvatam.
6. somaḥ ca rājasūyena iṣṭvā dharmeṇa dharmavit
prāptaḥ ca sarvalokānām kīrtim sthānam ca śāśvatam
6. ca dharmavit somaḥ rājasūyena dharmeṇa iṣṭvā ca
sarvalokānām śāśvatam kīrtim ca śāśvatam sthānam prāptaḥ
6. And Soma, the knower of natural law (dharma), having properly performed the royal consecration (rājasūya), attained eternal fame and a perpetual position among all beings.
अस्मिन्नहनि यच्छ्रेयश्चिन्त्यतां तन्मया सह ।
हितं चायति युक्तं च प्रयतौ वक्तुमर्हथ ॥७॥
7. asminnahani yacchreyaścintyatāṃ tanmayā saha ,
hitaṃ cāyati yuktaṃ ca prayatau vaktumarhatha.
7. asmin ahani yat śreyaḥ cintyatām tat mayā saha |
hitam ca āyati yuktam ca prayatāu vaktum arhatha
7. Let whatever is beneficial for this day, and that which is conducive to future well-being, be considered with me. You (all) should make an effort to speak it.
श्रुता तु राघवस्यैतद्वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदः ।
भरतः प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ॥८॥
8. śrutā tu rāghavasyaitadvākyaṃ vākyaviśāradaḥ ,
bharataḥ prāñjalirbhūtvā vākyametaduvāca ha.
8. śrutā tu rāghavasya etat vākyam vākyaviśāradaḥ
| bharataḥ prāñjaliḥ bhūtvā vākyam etat uvāca ha
8. Upon hearing this statement from Rāghava, Bharata, who was an expert in speech, stood with folded hands and said these words.
त्वयि धर्मः परः साधो त्वयि सर्वा वसुंधरा ।
प्रतिष्ठिता महाबाहो यशश्चामितविक्रम ॥९॥
9. tvayi dharmaḥ paraḥ sādho tvayi sarvā vasuṃdharā ,
pratiṣṭhitā mahābāho yaśaścāmitavikrama.
9. tvayi dharmaḥ paraḥ sādho tvayi sarvā vasuṃdharā
| pratiṣṭhitā mahābāho yaśaḥ ca amitavikrama
9. O good one (sādhu)! The supreme natural law (dharma) rests in you. In you, the entire earth is established. O mighty-armed one, and (your) fame, O one of immeasurable valor (amitavikrama)!
महीपालाश्च सर्वे त्वां प्रजापतिमिवामराः ।
निरीक्षन्ते महात्मानो लोकनाथं यथा वयम् ॥१०॥
10. mahīpālāśca sarve tvāṃ prajāpatimivāmarāḥ ,
nirīkṣante mahātmāno lokanāthaṃ yathā vayam.
10. mahīpālāḥ ca sarve tvām prajāpatim iva amarāḥ
| nirīkṣante mahātmānaḥ lokanātham yathā vayam
10. And all kings, being great-souled (mahātmāno), look upon you just as the immortals (gods) look upon Prajāpati, and just as we (look upon) the lord of the world.
प्रजाश्च पितृवद् राजन्पश्यन्ति त्वां महाबल ।
पृथिव्यां गतिभूतो ऽसि प्राणिनामपि राघव ॥११॥
11. prajāśca pitṛvad rājanpaśyanti tvāṃ mahābala ,
pṛthivyāṃ gatibhūto'si prāṇināmapi rāghava.
11. prajāḥ ca pitṛvat rājan paśyanti tvām mahābala
pṛthivyām gatibhūtaḥ asi prāṇinām api rāghava
11. rājan mahābala prajāḥ ca pitṛvat tvām paśyanti
rāghava pṛthivyām prāṇinām api gatibhūtaḥ asi
11. O mighty king, the subjects see you as a father. O Rāghava, you are indeed the refuge for all living beings on earth.
स त्वमेवंविधं यज्ञमाहर्तासि कथं नृप ।
पृथिव्यां राजवंशानां विनाशो यत्र दृश्यते ॥१२॥
12. sa tvamevaṃvidhaṃ yajñamāhartāsi kathaṃ nṛpa ,
pṛthivyāṃ rājavaṃśānāṃ vināśo yatra dṛśyate.
12. saḥ tvam evaṃvidham yajñam āhartā asi katham nṛpa
pṛthivyām rājavaṃśānām vināśaḥ yatra dṛśyate
12. nṛpa saḥ tvam evaṃvidham yajñam āhartā asi katham
yatra pṛthivyām rājavaṃśānām vināśaḥ dṛśyate
12. O king, how can you perform such a (yajña) in which the destruction of royal lineages is witnessed on earth?
पृथिव्यां ये च पुरुषा राजन्पौरुषमागताः ।
सर्वेषां भविता तत्र क्षयः सर्वान्तकोपमः ॥१३॥
13. pṛthivyāṃ ye ca puruṣā rājanpauruṣamāgatāḥ ,
sarveṣāṃ bhavitā tatra kṣayaḥ sarvāntakopamaḥ.
13. pṛthivyām ye ca puruṣāḥ rājan pauruṣam āgatāḥ
sarveṣām bhavitā tatra kṣayaḥ sarvāntakopamaḥ
13. rājan pṛthivyām ye ca puruṣāḥ pauruṣam āgatāḥ,
tatra sarveṣām sarvāntakopamaḥ kṣayaḥ bhavitā
13. O king, for all the men on earth who have attained valor, there will be a destruction like the end of all beings (sarvāntaka).
स त्वं पुरुषशार्दूल गुणैरतुलविक्रम ।
पृथिवीं नार्हसे हन्तुं वशे हि तव वर्तते ॥१४॥
14. sa tvaṃ puruṣaśārdūla guṇairatulavikrama ,
pṛthivīṃ nārhase hantuṃ vaśe hi tava vartate.
14. saḥ tvam puruṣaśārdūla guṇaiḥ atulavikrama
pṛthivīm na arhase hantum vaśe hi tava vartate
14. saḥ tvam puruṣaśārdūla atulavikrama guṇaiḥ,
pṛthivīm hantum na arhase hi tava vaśe vartate
14. O you, tiger among men, incomparable in your virtues and prowess, you ought not to destroy the earth, for it is indeed under your control.
भरतस्य तु तद्वाक्यं श्रुत्वामृतमयं यथा ।
प्रहर्षमतुलं लेभे रामः सत्यपराक्रमः ॥१५॥
15. bharatasya tu tadvākyaṃ śrutvāmṛtamayaṃ yathā ,
praharṣamatulaṃ lebhe rāmaḥ satyaparākramaḥ.
15. bharatasya tu tat vākyam śrutvā amṛtamayam yathā
praharṣam atulam lebhe rāmaḥ satyaparākramaḥ
15. Hearing that nectar-like speech from Bharata, Rama, who possesses true valor, attained incomparable delight.
उवाच च शुभां वाणीं कैकेय्या नन्दिवर्धनम् ।
प्रीतो ऽस्मि परितुष्टो ऽस्मि तवाद्य वचनेन हि ॥१६॥
16. uvāca ca śubhāṃ vāṇīṃ kaikeyyā nandivardhanam ,
prīto'smi parituṣṭo'smi tavādya vacanena hi.
16. uvāca ca śubhām vāṇīm kaikeyyāḥ nandivardhanam
prītaḥ asmi parituṣṭaḥ asmi tava adya vacanena hi
16. And he spoke auspicious words to Bharata, the delight of Kaikeyi: "Indeed, I am pleased and thoroughly satisfied by your statement today."
इदं वचनमक्लीबं त्वया धर्मसमाहितम् ।
व्याहृतं पुरुषव्याघ्र पृथिव्याः परिपालनम् ॥१७॥
17. idaṃ vacanamaklībaṃ tvayā dharmasamāhitam ,
vyāhṛtaṃ puruṣavyāghra pṛthivyāḥ paripālanam.
17. idam vacanam aklībam tvayā dharmasamāhitam
vyāhṛtam puruṣavyāghra pṛthivyāḥ paripālanam
17. This resolute statement, imbued with natural law (dharma) and concerning the protection of the earth, has been uttered by you, O tiger among men.
एष तस्मादभिप्रायाद् राजसूयात् क्रतूत्तमान् ।
निवर्तयामि धर्मज्ञ तव सुव्याहृतेन वै ॥१८॥
18. eṣa tasmādabhiprāyād rājasūyāt kratūttamān ,
nivartayāmi dharmajña tava suvyāhṛtena vai.
18. eṣaḥ tasmāt abhiprāyāt rājasūyāt kratu uttamān
nivartayāmi dharmajña tava suvyāhṛtena vai
18. O knower of natural law (dharma), by your well-spoken words, I indeed abandon the foremost (Vedic rituals) because of that [royal] intention and [the nature of] the Rājasūya (Vedic ritual).
प्रजानां पालनं धर्मो राज्ञां यज्ञेन संमितः ।
तस्माच्छृणोमि ते वाक्यं साधूक्तं सुसमाहितम् ॥१९॥
19. prajānāṃ pālanaṃ dharmo rājñāṃ yajñena saṃmitaḥ ,
tasmācchṛṇomi te vākyaṃ sādhūktaṃ susamāhitam.
19. prajānām pālanam dharmaḥ rājñām yajñena saṃmitaḥ
tasmāt śṛṇomi te vākyam sādhūktam susamāhitam
19. rājnām prajānām pālanam yajñena saṃmitaḥ dharmaḥ
tasmāt te sādhūktam susamāhitam vākyam śṛṇomi
19. The protection of subjects is the rightful duty (dharma) of kings, regarded as equivalent to a great (yajña). Therefore, I listen to your well-spoken and perfectly considered words.
