अनेकशतसाहस्रीं विषण्णां हरिवाहिनीम् ।
जाम्बवान् समुदीक्ष्यैवं हनुमन्तमथाब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. anekaśatasāhasrīṃ viṣaṇṇāṃ harivāhinīm ,

1. Jāmbavān, having thus thoroughly observed the dejected monkey army, which numbered many hundreds of thousands, then spoke to Hanuman.
वीर वानरलोकस्य सर्वशास्त्रविदां वर ।
तूष्णीमेकान्तमाश्रित्य हनुमन् किं न जल्पसि ॥२॥
2. vīra vānaralokasya sarvaśāstravidāṃ vara ,
tūṣṇīmekāntamāśritya hanuman kiṃ na jalpasi.

2. O hero of the monkey realm, best among those who know all the śāstras (scriptures), Hanuman, why do you not speak, having resorted to a solitary place in silence?
हनुमन् हरिराजस्य सुग्रीवस्य समो ह्यसि ।
रामलक्ष्मणयोश्चापि तेजसा च बलेन च ॥३॥
3. hanuman harirājasya sugrīvasya samo hyasi ,
rāmalakṣmaṇayoścāpi tejasā ca balena ca.

3. O Hanuman, you are indeed equal to Sugriva, the king of monkeys. Furthermore, you are equal to Rama and Lakshmana in valor and strength.
अरिष्टनेमिनः पुत्रौ वैनतेयो महाबलः ।
गरुत्मानिव विख्यात उत्तमः सर्वपक्षिणाम् ॥४॥
4. ariṣṭaneminaḥ putrau vainateyo mahābalaḥ ,

4. Vainateya, the immensely powerful son of Ariṣṭanemi, is renowned like (Garuḍa) Garutmān and supreme among all birds.
बहुशो हि मया दृष्टः सागरे स महाबलः ।
भुजगानुद्धरन्पक्षी महावेगो महायशाः ॥५॥
5. bahuśo hi mayā dṛṣṭaḥ sāgare sa mahābalaḥ ,
bhujagānuddharanpakṣī mahāvego mahāyaśāḥ.

5. Indeed, I have seen that greatly powerful bird, of immense speed and great fame, many times in the ocean, carrying away serpents.
पक्षयोर्यद्बलं तस्य तावद्भुजबलं तव ।
विक्रमश्चापि वेगश्च न ते तेनापहीयते ॥६॥
6. pakṣayoryadbalaṃ tasya tāvadbhujabalaṃ tava ,
vikramaścāpi vegaśca na te tenāpahīyate.
6. pakṣayoḥ yat balam tasya tāvat bhujabalam tava
vikramaḥ ca api vegaḥ ca na te tena apahīyate
6. tasya pakṣayoḥ yat balam,
tāvat tava bhujabalam.
tena te vikramaḥ ca api vegaḥ ca na apahīyate
6. Your arm-strength is as great as the strength of his wings. Your valor and speed are not diminished by him.
बलं बुद्धिश्च तेजश्च सत्त्वं च हरिसत्तम ।
विशिष्टं सर्वभूतेषु किमात्मानं न बुध्यसे ॥७॥
7. balaṃ buddhiśca tejaśca sattvaṃ ca harisattama ,
viśiṣṭaṃ sarvabhūteṣu kimātmānaṃ na budhyase.
7. balam buddhiḥ ca tejaḥ ca sattvam ca harisattama
viśiṣṭam sarvabhūteṣu kim ātmānam na budhyase

7. O best among monkeys, strength, intelligence, valor, and courage are preeminent in all beings. Why do you not comprehend your own true nature (ātman)?
अप्सराप्सरसां श्रेष्ठा विख्याता पुञ्जिकस्थला ।
अज्ञनेति परिख्याता पत्नी केसरिणो हरेः ॥८॥
8. apsarāpsarasāṃ śreṣṭhā vikhyātā puñjikasthalā ,
ajñaneti parikhyātā patnī kesariṇo hareḥ.

8. The foremost among apsarases, known as Puñjikastalā, she became famously known as Añjanā, the wife of Keśarin, the monkey.
अभिशापादभूत्तात वानरी कामरूपिणी ।
दुहिता वानरेन्द्रस्य कुञ्जरस्य महात्मनः ॥९॥
9. abhiśāpādabhūttāta vānarī kāmarūpiṇī ,
duhitā vānarendrasya kuñjarasya mahātmanaḥ.

duhitā vānarendrasya kuñjarasya mahātmanaḥ

9. Due to a curse, dear one, she became a female monkey capable of assuming any form at will. She was the daughter of the great-souled (mahātman) monkey-king Kuñjara.
कपित्वे चारुसर्वाङ्गी कदा चित् कामरूपिणी ।
मानुषं विग्रहं कृत्वा यौवनोत्तमशालिनी ॥१०॥
10. kapitve cārusarvāṅgī kadā cit kāmarūpiṇī ,
mānuṣaṃ vigrahaṃ kṛtvā yauvanottamaśālinī.

10. Even in her monkey form, she possessed beautiful limbs. Sometimes, when she assumed a human body at will, she would be endowed with supreme youth.
अचरत् पर्वतस्याग्रे प्रावृडम्बुदसंनिभे ।
विचित्रमाल्याभरणा महार्हक्षौमवासिनी ॥११॥
11. acarat parvatasyāgre prāvṛḍambudasaṃnibhe ,
vicitramālyābharaṇā mahārhakṣaumavāsinī.

11. She wandered on the peak of the mountain, which resembled a monsoon cloud, adorned with colorful garlands and ornaments, and wearing precious silk garments.
तस्या वस्त्रं विशालाक्ष्याः पीतं रक्तदशं शुभम् ।
स्थितायाः पर्वतस्याग्रे मारुतो ऽपहरच्छनैः ॥१२॥
12. tasyā vastraṃ viśālākṣyāḥ pītaṃ raktadaśaṃ śubham ,
sthitāyāḥ parvatasyāgre māruto'paharacchanaiḥ.
12. tasyāḥ vastram viśālāxyāḥ pītam raktadaśam śubham
sthitāyāḥ parvatasya agre mārutaḥ apaharat śanaiḥ

12. As she, the wide-eyed woman, stood on the mountain's summit, the wind slowly carried away her beautiful yellow garment, which had red fringes.
स ददर्श ततस्तस्या वृत्ताव् ऊरू सुसंहतौ ।
स्तनौ च पीनौ सहितौ सुजातं चारु चाननम् ॥१३॥
13. sa dadarśa tatastasyā vṛttāv ūrū susaṃhatau ,
stanau ca pīnau sahitau sujātaṃ cāru cānanam.
13. saḥ dadarśa tataḥ tasyāḥ vṛttau ūrū suṃsaṃhatau
stanau ca pīnau sahitau sujātam cāru ca ānanam
13. saḥ tataḥ dadarśa tasyāḥ vṛttau suṃsaṃhatau ūrū
ca pīnau sahitau stanau ca sujātam cāru ānanam
13. He then saw her rounded, well-formed thighs, and her full, close-set breasts, and her beautiful, charming face.
तां विशालायतश्रोणीं तनुमध्यां यशस्विनीम् ।
दृष्ट्वैव शुभसर्वाग्नीं पवनः काममोहितः ॥१४॥
14. tāṃ viśālāyataśroṇīṃ tanumadhyāṃ yaśasvinīm ,
dṛṣṭvaiva śubhasarvāgnīṃ pavanaḥ kāmamohitaḥ.
14. tām viśālāyataśroṇīm tanumadhyām yaśasvinīm
dṛṣṭvā eva śubhasarvāgnīm pavanaḥ kāmamohitaḥ
14. pavanaḥ tām viśālāyataśroṇīm tanumadhyām

14. Having seen her - with her broad, expansive hips, slender waist, glorious presence, and beautiful form (śubhasarvāgnīm) - the wind god (pavana) became infatuated by passion (kāma).
स तां भुजाभ्यां पीनाभ्यां पर्यष्वजत मारुतः ।
मन्मथाविष्टसर्वाङ्गो गतात्मा तामनिन्दिताम् ॥१५॥
15. sa tāṃ bhujābhyāṃ pīnābhyāṃ paryaṣvajata mārutaḥ ,
manmathāviṣṭasarvāṅgo gatātmā tāmaninditām.
15. saḥ tām bhujābhyām pīnābhyām paryasvajata mārutaḥ
manmathāviṣṭasarvāṅgaḥ gatātmā tām aninditām
15. With his stout arms, the wind god (māruta), whose entire body was overcome by Kāma (the god of love) and who was utterly infatuated, embraced that blameless woman.
सा तु तत्रैव संभ्रान्ता सुवृत्ता वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
एकपत्नीव्रतमिदं को नाशयितुमिच्छति ॥१६॥
16. sā tu tatraiva saṃbhrāntā suvṛttā vākyamabravīt ,
ekapatnīvratamidaṃ ko nāśayitumicchati.
16. sā tu tatra eva sambhrāntā suvṛttā vākyam
abravīt ekapatnīvratam idam kaḥ nāśayitum icchati
16. But she, bewildered yet well-behaved, spoke these words right there: 'Who desires to destroy this vow of being devoted to one husband?'
अञ्जनाया वचः श्रुत्वा मारुतः प्रत्यभाषत ।
न त्वां हिंसामि सुश्रोणि मा भूत्ते सुभगे भयम् ॥१७॥
17. añjanāyā vacaḥ śrutvā mārutaḥ pratyabhāṣata ,
na tvāṃ hiṃsāmi suśroṇi mā bhūtte subhage bhayam.
17. añjanāyāḥ vacaḥ śrutvā mārutaḥ prati abhāṣata na
tvām hiṃsāmi suśroṇi mā bhūt te subhage bhayam
17. Having heard Añjanā's words, Maruta replied: 'O lady with beautiful hips, I will not harm you. O fortunate one, let there be no fear for you.'
मनसास्मि गतो यत्त्वां परिष्वज्य यशस्विनि ।
वीर्यवान्बुद्धिसंपन्नः पुत्रस्तव भविष्यति ॥१८॥
18. manasāsmi gato yattvāṃ pariṣvajya yaśasvini ,
vīryavānbuddhisaṃpannaḥ putrastava bhaviṣyati.
18. manasā asmi gataḥ yat tvām pariṣvajya yaśasvini
vīryavān buddhisampannaḥ putraḥ tava bhaviṣyati
18. O glorious one, because I have embraced you mentally, a son will be born to you who will be powerful and endowed with intelligence.
अभ्युत्थितं ततः सूर्यं बालो दृष्ट्वा महावने ।
फलं चेति जिघृक्षुस्त्वमुत्प्लुत्याभ्यपतो दिवम् ॥१९॥
19. abhyutthitaṃ tataḥ sūryaṃ bālo dṛṣṭvā mahāvane ,
phalaṃ ceti jighṛkṣustvamutplutyābhyapato divam.
19. abhyutthitam tataḥ sūryam bālaḥ dṛṣṭvā mahāvane phalam
ca iti jighṛkṣuḥ tvam utplutya abhyapataḥ divam
19. You, a child, seeing the rising sun in the great forest, then desired to seize it as a fruit, and leaping up, you flew towards the sky.
शतानि त्रीणि गत्वाथ योजनानां महाकपे ।
तेजसा तस्य निर्धूतो न विषादं ततो गतः ॥२०॥
20. śatāni trīṇi gatvātha yojanānāṃ mahākape ,
tejasā tasya nirdhūto na viṣādaṃ tato gataḥ.
20. śatāni trīṇi gatvā atha yojanānām mahākape
tejasā tasya nirdhūtaḥ na viṣādam tataḥ gataḥ
20. O great monkey, after traveling three hundred yojanas, though you were driven back by its (the sun's) radiance, you did not then become dejected.
तावदापततस्तूर्णमन्तरिक्षं महाकपे ।
क्षिप्तमिन्द्रेण ते वज्रं क्रोधाविष्टेन धीमता ॥२१॥
21. tāvadāpatatastūrṇamantarikṣaṃ mahākape ,
kṣiptamindreṇa te vajraṃ krodhāviṣṭena dhīmatā.
21. tāvat āpatataḥ tūrṇam antarikṣam mahākape
kṣiptam indreṇa te vajram krodhāviṣṭena dhīmatā
21. Meanwhile, O great monkey, as you were swiftly flying through the sky, Indra, intelligent and overcome with rage, hurled his thunderbolt at you.
ततः शैलाग्रशिखरे वामो हनुरभज्यत ।
ततो हि नामधेयं ते हनुमानिति कीर्त्यते ॥२२॥
22. tataḥ śailāgraśikhare vāmo hanurabhajyata ,
tato hi nāmadheyaṃ te hanumāniti kīrtyate.
22. tataḥ śailāgraśikhare vāmaḥ hanuḥ abhajyata
tataḥ hi nāmadheyam te hanumān iti kīrtyate
22. Then, on a mountain peak, your left jaw was broken. For that reason, indeed, your name is called Hanuman.
ततस्त्वां निहतं दृष्ट्वा वायुर्गन्धवहः स्वयम् ।
त्रैलोक्ये भृशसंक्रुद्धो न ववौ वै प्रभञ्जनः ॥२३॥
23. tatastvāṃ nihataṃ dṛṣṭvā vāyurgandhavahaḥ svayam ,
trailokye bhṛśasaṃkruddho na vavau vai prabhañjanaḥ.
23. tataḥ tvām nihatam dṛṣṭvā vāyuḥ gandhavahaḥ svayam |
trailokye bhṛśasaṃkruddhaḥ na vavau vai prabhañjanaḥ
23. tataḥ svayam gandhavahaḥ vāyuḥ prabhañjanaḥ tvām nihatam dṛṣṭvā trailokye bhṛśasaṃkruddhaḥ vai na vavau.
23. Then, upon seeing you struck down, Vāyu, the carrier of fragrance, himself, became exceedingly enraged throughout the three worlds. Consequently, the violent wind ceased to blow.
संभ्रान्ताश्च सुराः सर्वे त्रैलोक्ये क्षुभिते सति ।
प्रसादयन्ति संक्रुद्धं मारुतं भुवनेश्वराः ॥२४॥
24. saṃbhrāntāśca surāḥ sarve trailokye kṣubhite sati ,
prasādayanti saṃkruddhaṃ mārutaṃ bhuvaneśvarāḥ.
24. saṃbhrāntāḥ ca surāḥ sarve trailokye kṣubhite sati
| prasādayanti saṃkruddham mārutam bhuvaneśvarāḥ
24. ca sarve surāḥ saṃbhrāntāḥ.
trailokye kṣubhite sati,
bhuvaneśvarāḥ saṃkruddham mārutam prasādayanti.
24. And all the gods became bewildered. With the three worlds agitated, the lords of the realms began to appease the enraged wind-god (Māruta).
प्रसादिते च पवने ब्रह्मा तुभ्यं वरं ददौ ।
अशस्त्रवध्यतां तात समरे सत्यविक्रम ॥२५॥
25. prasādite ca pavane brahmā tubhyaṃ varaṃ dadau ,
aśastravadhyatāṃ tāta samare satyavikrama.
25. prasādite ca pavane brahmā tubhyam varam dadau
| aśastravadhyatām tāta samare satyavikrama
25. ca pavane prasādite,
brahmā tāta satyavikrama tubhyam samare aśastravadhyatām varam dadau.
25. And once the wind-god (Pavana) was appeased, Brahmā granted you a boon, O dear one of true valor: invulnerability to weapons in battle.
वज्रस्य च निपातेन विरुजं त्वां समीक्ष्य च ।
सहस्रनेत्रः प्रीतात्मा ददौ ते वरमुत्तमम् ॥२६॥
26. vajrasya ca nipātena virujaṃ tvāṃ samīkṣya ca ,
sahasranetraḥ prītātmā dadau te varamuttamam.
26. vajrasya ca nipātena virujam tvām samīkṣya ca
| sahasranetraḥ prītātmā dadau te varam uttamam
26. ca vajrasya nipātena tvām virujam samīkṣya ca,
sahasranetraḥ prītātmā te uttamam varam dadau.
26. And having observed you unharmed by the strike of the thunderbolt, the thousand-eyed one (Indra), with a delighted spirit (ātman), bestowed upon you an excellent boon.
स्वच्छन्दतश्च मरणं ते भूयादिति वै प्रभो ।
स त्वं केसरिणः पुत्रः क्षेत्रजो भीमविक्रमः ॥२७॥
27. svacchandataśca maraṇaṃ te bhūyāditi vai prabho ,
sa tvaṃ kesariṇaḥ putraḥ kṣetrajo bhīmavikramaḥ.
27. svacchandataḥ ca maraṇam te bhūyāt iti vai prabho
| sa tvam kesariṇaḥ putraḥ kṣetrajaḥ bhīmavikramaḥ
27. prabho,
te svacchandataḥ maraṇam ca bhūyāt iti vai sa tvam kesariṇaḥ kṣetrajaḥ bhīmavikramaḥ putraḥ
27. O lord, may you have the power to choose your own death. You are indeed that son of Keśarī, born of his wife, possessing formidable might.
मारुतस्यौरसः पुत्रस्तेजसा चापि तत्समः ।
त्वं हि वायुसुतो वत्स प्लवने चापि तत्समः ॥२८॥
28. mārutasyaurasaḥ putrastejasā cāpi tatsamaḥ ,
tvaṃ hi vāyusuto vatsa plavane cāpi tatsamaḥ.
28. mārutasya aurasaḥ putraḥ tejasā ca api tatsamaḥ
| tvam hi vāyusutaḥ vatsa plavane ca api tatsamaḥ
28. vatsa,
tvam mārutasya aurasaḥ putraḥ,
tejasā ca api tatsamaḥ hi tvam vāyusutaḥ,
plavane ca api tatsamaḥ
28. You are the legitimate son of Maruta (Vāyu), equal to him in vigor and brilliance. Indeed, dear child, you are the son of Vāyu, and also equal to him in leaping ability.
वयमद्य गतप्राणा भवानस्मासु साम्प्रतम् ।
दाक्ष्यविक्रमसंपन्नः पक्षिराज इवापरः ॥२९॥
29. vayamadya gataprāṇā bhavānasmāsu sāmpratam ,
dākṣyavikramasaṃpannaḥ pakṣirāja ivāparaḥ.
29. vayam adya gataprāṇāḥ bhavān asmāsu sāmpratam
| dākṣyavikramasampannaḥ pakṣirājaḥ iva aparaḥ
29. adya vayam gataprāṇāḥ sāmpratam asmāsu bhavān
dākṣyavikramasampannaḥ aparaḥ pakṣirājaḥ iva
29. We are now as if lifeless and utterly exhausted. You, among us at this moment, are endowed with competence and valor, like another king of birds (Garuda).
त्रिविक्रमे मया तात सशैलवनकानना ।
त्रिः सप्तकृत्वः पृथिवी परिक्रान्ता प्रदक्षिणम् ॥३०॥
30. trivikrame mayā tāta saśailavanakānanā ,
triḥ saptakṛtvaḥ pṛthivī parikrāntā pradakṣiṇam.

30. O dear child, at the time of Viṣṇu's three great strides, I traversed the entire earth, including its mountains, forests, and groves, twenty-one times, performing a clockwise circumambulation.
तदा चौषधयो ऽस्माभिः संचिता देवशासनात् ।
निष्पन्नममृतं याभिस्तदासीन्नो महद्बलम् ॥३१॥
31. tadā cauṣadhayo'smābhiḥ saṃcitā devaśāsanāt ,
niṣpannamamṛtaṃ yābhistadāsīnno mahadbalam.
31. tadā ca oṣadhayaḥ asmābhiḥ sañcitāḥ devaśāsanāt
niṣpannam amṛtam yābhiḥ tadā āsīt naḥ mahat balam
31. tadā ca devaśāsanāt asmābhiḥ oṣadhayaḥ sañcitāḥ
yābhiḥ amṛtam niṣpannam tadā naḥ mahat balam āsīt
31. At that time, by the command of the gods, we gathered herbs. From these, the elixir (amṛta) was produced, and then we gained great strength.
स इदानीमहं वृद्धः परिहीनपराक्रमः ।
साम्प्रतं कालमस्माकं भवान् सर्वगुणान्वितः ॥३२॥
32. sa idānīmahaṃ vṛddhaḥ parihīnaparākramaḥ ,
sāmprataṃ kālamasmākaṃ bhavān sarvaguṇānvitaḥ.
32. saḥ idānīm aham vṛddhaḥ parihīnaparākramaḥ
sāmpratam kālam asmākam bhavān sarvaguṇānvitaḥ
32. saḥ aham idānīm vṛddhaḥ parihīnaparākramaḥ
sāmpratam kālam asmākam bhavān sarvaguṇānvitaḥ
32. I am now old, and my valor is diminished. At this time, you (bhavān) are endowed with all good qualities, suitable for our purpose.
तद्विजृम्भस्व विक्रान्तः प्लवतामुत्तमो ह्यसि ।
त्वद्वीर्यं द्रष्टुकामेयं सर्वा वानरवाहिनी ॥३३॥
33. tadvijṛmbhasva vikrāntaḥ plavatāmuttamo hyasi ,
tvadvīryaṃ draṣṭukāmeyaṃ sarvā vānaravāhinī.
33. tat vijṛmbhasva vikrāntaḥ plavatām uttamaḥ hi asi
tvat vīryam draṣṭukāmā iyam sarvā vānaravāhinī
33. tat vikrāntaḥ vijṛmbhasva hi plavatām uttamaḥ asi
iyam sarvā vānaravāhinī tvat vīryam draṣṭukāmā
33. Therefore, display your might, O valorous one, for you are indeed the best among all who leap. This entire army of monkeys desires to witness your strength.
उत्तिष्ठ हरिशार्दूल लङ्घयस्व महार्णवम् ।
परा हि सर्वभूतानां हनुमन्या गतिस्तव ॥३४॥
34. uttiṣṭha hariśārdūla laṅghayasva mahārṇavam ,
parā hi sarvabhūtānāṃ hanumanyā gatistava.

parā hi sarvabhūtānām hanuman yā gatiḥ tava
34. hariśārdūla uttiṣṭha mahārṇavam laṅghayasva
hanuman hi yā tava gatiḥ sarvabhūtānām parā
34. Arise, O tiger among monkeys (hariśārdūla), and leap over the great ocean. O Hanumat, your speed and power of movement (gati) are indeed superior to all other beings.
विषाण्णा हरयः सर्वे हनुमन् किमुपेक्षसे ।
विक्रमस्व महावेगो विष्णुस्त्रीन् विक्रमानिव ॥३५॥
35. viṣāṇṇā harayaḥ sarve hanuman kimupekṣase ,
vikramasva mahāvego viṣṇustrīn vikramāniva.

vikramasva mahāvegaḥ viṣṇuḥ trīn vikramān iva
35. hanuman sarve harayaḥ viṣāṇṇāḥ kim upekṣase

35. All the monkeys are distressed. O Hanumān, why do you remain inactive? Exert your great power, just as Viṣṇu took his three strides.
ततस्तु वै जाम्बवताभिचोदितः प्रतीतवेगः पवनात्मजः कपिः ।
प्रहर्षयंस्तां हरिवीर वाहिनीं चकार रूपं महदात्मनस्तदा ॥३६॥
36. tatastu vai jāmbavatābhicoditaḥ pratītavegaḥ pavanātmajaḥ kapiḥ ,
praharṣayaṃstāṃ harivīra vāhinīṃ cakāra rūpaṃ mahadātmanastadā.
36. tataḥ tu vai jāmbavatā abhicoditaḥ
pratītavegaḥ pavanātmajaḥ kapiḥ
praharṣayan tām harivīravāhinīm
cakāra rūpam mahat ātmanaḥ tadā
36. tataḥ tu vai jāmbavatā abhicoditaḥ
pratītavegaḥ pavanātmajaḥ kapiḥ
tām harivīravāhinīm praharṣayan
tadā ātmanaḥ mahat rūpam cakāra
36. Then, indeed, the son of the wind (pavanātmaja), the monkey whose speed was renowned, exhorted by Jāmbavat, delighted that army of monkey heroes and then assumed a huge form of himself (ātmanaḥ).
