विज्ञाय तु मनस्तस्य राघवस्य महात्मनः ।
संनिवृत्याहवात्तस्मात् प्रविवेश पुरं ततः ॥१॥

1. But having understood the intention of that great-souled Rāghava, he retreated from that battle and then entered his city.

क्रोधताम्रेक्षणः शूरो निर्जगाम महाद्युतिः ॥२॥
2. so'nusmṛtya vadhaṃ teṣāṃ rākṣasānāṃ tarasvinām ,
krodhatāmrekṣaṇaḥ śūro nirjagāma mahādyutiḥ.
2. saḥ anusmṛtya vadham teṣām rākṣasānām tarasvinām
krodhatāmrekṣaṇaḥ śūraḥ nirjagāma mahādyutiḥ

2. Remembering the killing of those mighty rākṣasas, the greatly effulgent hero, with eyes red from anger, came forth.
स पश्चिमेन द्वारेण निर्ययौ राक्षसैर्वृतः ।
इन्द्रजित्तु महावीर्यः पौलस्त्यो देवकण्टकः ॥३॥
3. sa paścimena dvāreṇa niryayau rākṣasairvṛtaḥ ,
indrajittu mahāvīryaḥ paulastyo devakaṇṭakaḥ.

3. Surrounded by rākṣasas, he, Indrajit - the greatly valorous son of Pulastya and a tormentor of devas (gods) - exited through the western gate.
इन्द्रजित्तु ततो दृष्ट्वा भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ।
रणायाभ्युद्यतौ वीरौ मायां प्रादुष्करोत्तदा ॥४॥
4. indrajittu tato dṛṣṭvā bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau ,
raṇāyābhyudyatau vīrau māyāṃ prāduṣkarottadā.

4. But then Indrajit, having seen the two heroic brothers, Rama and Lakshmana, prepared for battle, then manifested an illusion (māyā).
इन्द्रजित्तु रथे स्थाप्य सीतां मायामयीं तदा ।
बलेन महतावृत्य तस्या वधमरोचयत् ॥५॥
5. indrajittu rathe sthāpya sītāṃ māyāmayīṃ tadā ,
balena mahatāvṛtya tasyā vadhamarocayat.

5. But then Indrajit, having placed an illusory Sita in the chariot and surrounded her with a great army, intended her killing.
मोहनार्थं तु सर्वेषां बुद्धिं कृत्वा सुदुर्मतिः ।
हन्तुं सीतां व्यवसितो वानराभिमुखो ययौ ॥६॥
6. mohanārthaṃ tu sarveṣāṃ buddhiṃ kṛtvā sudurmatiḥ ,
hantuṃ sītāṃ vyavasito vānarābhimukho yayau.
6. mohanārtham tu sarveṣām buddhim kṛtvā sudurmatiḥ
hantum sītām vyavasitaḥ vānarābhimukhaḥ yayau

6. That very evil-minded one, having resolved to kill Sita, devised a plan to bewilder all of them and went towards the monkeys.
तं दृष्ट्वा त्वभिनिर्यान्तं नगर्याः काननौकसः ।
उत्पेतुरभिसंक्रुद्धाः शिलाहस्ता युयुत्सवः ॥७॥
7. taṃ dṛṣṭvā tvabhiniryāntaṃ nagaryāḥ kānanaukasaḥ ,
utpeturabhisaṃkruddhāḥ śilāhastā yuyutsavaḥ.
7. tam dṛṣṭvā tu abhiniryāntam nagaryāḥ kānanaukasaḥ

7. When they saw him emerging from the city, the forest-dwelling monkeys, greatly enraged, sprang up with stones in their hands, eager for battle.
हनूमान्पुरतस्तेषां जगाम कपिकुञ्जरः ।
प्रगृह्य सुमहच्छृङ्गं पर्वतस्य दुरासदम् ॥८॥
8. hanūmānpuratasteṣāṃ jagāma kapikuñjaraḥ ,
pragṛhya sumahacchṛṅgaṃ parvatasya durāsadam.
8. hanūmān purataḥ teṣām jagāma kapikuñjaraḥ
pragṛhya sumahat śṛṅgam parvatasya durāsadam

8. Hanuman, the foremost of the monkeys, proceeded ahead of them, having seized a very huge and formidable mountain peak.
स ददर्श हतानन्दां सीतामिन्द्रजितो रथे ।
एकवेणीधरां दीनामुपवासकृशाननाम् ॥९॥
9. sa dadarśa hatānandāṃ sītāmindrajito rathe ,
ekaveṇīdharāṃ dīnāmupavāsakṛśānanām.
9. saḥ dadarśa hataanandām sītām indrajitaḥ
rathe ekaveṇīdharām dīnām upavāsakṛśānanām

9. He (Hanuman) saw Sita in Indrajit's chariot, her joy lost, wearing a single braid, looking distressed, and with a face emaciated by fasting.
परिक्लिष्टैकवसनाममृजां राघवप्रियाम् ।
रजोमलाभ्यामालिप्तैः सर्वगात्रैर्वरस्त्रियम् ॥१०॥
10. parikliṣṭaikavasanāmamṛjāṃ rāghavapriyām ,
rajomalābhyāmāliptaiḥ sarvagātrairvarastriyam.
10. parikliṣṭaikavasanām amṛjām rāghavapriyām rajas
malābhyām āliptaiḥ sarvagātraiḥ varastriyam
10. rāghavapriyām varastriyam parikliṣṭaikavasanām

10. The excellent woman, dear to Rāma, was wearing a single worn-out garment, uncleaned, with all her limbs smeared with dust and dirt.
तां निरीक्ष्य मुहूर्तं तु मैथिलीमध्यवस्य च ।
बाष्पपर्याकुलमुखो हनूमान् व्यथितो ऽभवत् ॥११॥
11. tāṃ nirīkṣya muhūrtaṃ tu maithilīmadhyavasya ca ,
bāṣpaparyākulamukho hanūmān vyathito'bhavat.
11. tām nirīkṣya muhūrtam tu maithilīm adhyavasya ca
bāṣpaparyākulamukhaḥ hanumān vyathitaḥ abhavat
11. hanumān tām maithilīm muhūrtam nirīkṣya ca
adhyavasya bāṣpaparyākulamukhaḥ vyathitaḥ abhavat
11. Having observed her, Maithilī, for a moment, and having confirmed her identity, Hanumān became distressed, his face agitated by tears.
अब्रवीत्तां तु शोकार्तां निरानन्दां तपस्विनाम् ।
दृष्ट्वा रथे स्तितां सीतां राक्षसेन्द्रसुताश्रिताम् ॥१२॥
12. abravīttāṃ tu śokārtāṃ nirānandāṃ tapasvinām ,
dṛṣṭvā rathe stitāṃ sītāṃ rākṣasendrasutāśritām.
12. abravīt tām tu śokārtām nirānandām tapasvinām
dṛṣṭvā rathe sthitām sītām rākṣasendrasutāśritām
12. saḥ dṛṣṭvā rākṣasendrasutāśritām rathe sthitām sītām,

12. Having seen Sītā, situated in a chariot and surrounded by the daughters of the Rākṣasa lord, he perceived her as sorrowful, joyless, and like an ascetic (tapasvin).
किं समर्थितमस्येति चिन्तयन् स महाकपिः ।
सह तैर्वानरश्रेष्ठैरभ्यधावत रावणिम् ॥१३॥
13. kiṃ samarthitamasyeti cintayan sa mahākapiḥ ,
saha tairvānaraśreṣṭhairabhyadhāvata rāvaṇim.
13. kim samarthitam asya iti cintayan saḥ mahākapiḥ
saha taiḥ vānarśreṣṭhaiḥ abhyadhāvata rāvaṇim
13. saḥ mahākapiḥ "kim asya samarthitam?" iti cintayan,
taiḥ vānarśreṣṭhaiḥ saha rāvaṇim abhyadhāvata
13. Thinking, 'What has been decided for her (Sītā)?', that great monkey (mahākapi) Hanumān, along with those excellent Vānaras, rushed towards Rāvaṇi (Indrajit).
तद्वानरबलं दृष्ट्वा रावणिः क्रोधमूर्छितः ।
कृत्वा विशोकं निस्त्रिंशं मूर्ध्नि सीतां परामृशत् ॥१४॥
14. tadvānarabalaṃ dṛṣṭvā rāvaṇiḥ krodhamūrchitaḥ ,
kṛtvā viśokaṃ nistriṃśaṃ mūrdhni sītāṃ parāmṛśat.
14. tat vānara-balam dṛṣṭvā rāvaṇiḥ krodha-mūrcchitaḥ
kṛtvā viśokam nistriṃśam mūrdhni sītām parāmṛśat
14. rāvaṇiḥ tat vānara-balam dṛṣṭvā krodha-mūrcchitaḥ
viśokam nistriṃśam kṛtvā sītām mūrdhni parāmṛśat
14. Seeing that monkey army, Indrajit, overcome with rage, took his sharp sword and seized Sītā by the head.
तं स्त्रियं पश्यतां तेषां ताडयामास रावणिः ।
क्रोशन्तीं राम रामेति मायया योजितां रथे ॥१५॥
15. taṃ striyaṃ paśyatāṃ teṣāṃ tāḍayāmāsa rāvaṇiḥ ,
krośantīṃ rāma rāmeti māyayā yojitāṃ rathe.
15. tam striyam paśyatām teṣām tāḍayāmāsa rāvaṇiḥ
krośantīm rāma rāma iti māyayā yojitām rathe
15. teṣām tam māyayā rathe yojitām rāma rāma iti
krośantīm striyam paśyatām rāvaṇiḥ tāḍayāmāsa
15. While those (monkeys) watched that woman, crying "Rāma! Rāma!", Indrajit struck her, who had been placed on a chariot through illusion (māyā).
गृहीतमूर्धजां दृष्ट्वा हनूमान्दैन्यमागतः ।
दुःखजं वारिनेत्राभ्यामुत्सृजन्मारुतात्मजः ।
अब्रवीत् परुषं वाक्यं क्रोधाद् रक्षोऽधिपात्मजम् ॥१६॥
16. gṛhītamūrdhajāṃ dṛṣṭvā hanūmāndainyamāgataḥ ,
duḥkhajaṃ vārinetrābhyāmutsṛjanmārutātmajaḥ ,
abravīt paruṣaṃ vākyaṃ krodhād rakṣo'dhipātmajam.
16. gṛhīta-mūrdhajām dṛṣṭvā hanūmān dainyam
āgataḥ duḥkha-jam vāri netrābhyām
utsṛjan mārutātmajaḥ abravīt paruṣam
vākyam krodhāt rakṣaḥ-adhipa-ātmajam
16. gṛhīta-mūrdhajām dṛṣṭvā hanūmān dainyam
āgataḥ mārutātmajaḥ netrābhyām
duḥkha-jam vāri utsṛjan krodhāt
rakṣaḥ-adhipa-ātmajam paruṣam vākyam abravīt
16. Seeing her seized by the hair, Hanumān became distressed. Shedding tears born of sorrow from his eyes, the son of the wind (Marutātmaja) spoke harsh words to the son of the lord of Rākṣasas (Indrajit) out of anger.
दुरात्मन्नात्मनाशाय केशपक्षे परामृशः ।
ब्रह्मर्षीणां कुले जातो राक्षसीं योनिमाश्रितः ।
धिक् त्वां पापसमाचारं यस्य ते मतिरीदृशी ॥१७॥
17. durātmannātmanāśāya keśapakṣe parāmṛśaḥ ,
brahmarṣīṇāṃ kule jāto rākṣasīṃ yonimāśritaḥ ,
dhik tvāṃ pāpasamācāraṃ yasya te matirīdṛśī.
17. durātman ātma-nāśāya keśa-pakṣe
parāmṛśaḥ brahmarṣīṇām kule jātaḥ
rākṣasīm yonim āśritaḥ dhik tvām
pāpa-samācāram yasya te matiḥ īdṛśī
17. durātman! ātma-nāśāya keśa-pakṣe parāmṛśaḥ.
brahmarṣīṇām kule jātaḥ rākṣasīm yonim āśritaḥ dhik tvām pāpa-samācāram yasya te matiḥ īdṛśī
17. "O evil-minded one! You have seized her by the hair for your own destruction. Born in the lineage of Brahmin (brahmarṣi) sages, you have adopted a demonic nature. Shame on you, whose conduct is sinful, and whose intellect is like this!"
नृशंसानार्य दुर्वृत्त क्षुद्र पापपराक्रम ।
अनार्यस्येदृशं कर्म घृणा ते नास्ति निर्घृण ॥१८॥
18. nṛśaṃsānārya durvṛtta kṣudra pāpaparākrama ,
anāryasyedṛśaṃ karma ghṛṇā te nāsti nirghṛṇa.
18. nṛśaṃsa anārya durvṛtta kṣudra pāpaparākrama
anāryasya īdṛśaṃ karma ghṛṇā te na asti nirghṛṇa
18. he nṛśaṃsa anārya durvṛtta kṣudra pāpaparākrama nirghṛṇa,
te anāryasya īdṛśaṃ karma ghṛṇā na asti
18. O cruel, ignoble, wicked, base person, whose power is directed toward sin! O pitiless one, you have no abhorrence for such a deed (karma), which is characteristic of an ignoble person.
च्युता गृहाच्च राज्याच्च रामहस्ताच्च मैथिली ।
किं तवैषापराद्धा हि यदेनां हन्तुमिच्छसि ॥१९॥
19. cyutā gṛhācca rājyācca rāmahastācca maithilī ,
kiṃ tavaiṣāparāddhā hi yadenāṃ hantumicchasi.
19. cyutā gṛhāt ca rājyāt ca rāmahastāt ca maithilī
kim tava eṣā aparāddhā hi yat enāṃ hantuṃ icchasi
19. maithilī gṛhāt ca rājyāt ca rāmahastāt ca cyutā.
hi,
eṣā tava kim aparāddhā yat enāṃ hantuṃ icchasi?
19. Sītā (maithilī) has been removed from her home, her kingdom, and from Rāma's grasp. What offense, indeed, has she committed against you that you desire to kill her?
सीतां च हत्वा न चिरं जीविष्यसि कथं चन ।
वधार्हकर्मणानेन मम हस्तगतो ह्यसि ॥२०॥
20. sītāṃ ca hatvā na ciraṃ jīviṣyasi kathaṃ cana ,
vadhārhakarmaṇānena mama hastagato hyasi.
20. sītāṃ ca hatvā na ciraṃ jīviṣyasi kathaṃ cana
vadhārhakarmaṇā anena mama hastagataḥ hi asi
20. sītāṃ hatvā ca,
tvaṃ kathaṃ cana ciraṃ na jīviṣyasi.
anena vadhārhakarmaṇā hi mama hastagataḥ asi.
20. Indeed, having killed Sītā, you will certainly not live long. By this act (karma) deserving of death, you have fallen into my grasp.
ये च स्त्रीघातिनां लोका लोकवध्यैश्च कुत्सिताः ।
इह जीवितमुत्सृज्य प्रेत्य तान्प्रतिलप्स्यसे ॥२१॥
21. ye ca strīghātināṃ lokā lokavadhyaiśca kutsitāḥ ,
iha jīvitamutsṛjya pretya tānpratilapsyase.
21. ye ca strīghātināṃ lokāḥ lokavadhyaiḥ ca kutsitāḥ
iha jīvitaṃ utsṛjya pretya tān pratilapsyase
21. ye ca strīghātināṃ lokāḥ lokavadhyaiḥ ca kutsitāḥ (santi),
tān (lokān) iha jīvitaṃ utsṛjya,
pretya pratilapsyase.
21. And those wretched realms that are for the killers of women, condemned even by those who are despised by the world - abandoning your life here, you will attain them after death.
इति ब्रुवाणो हनुमान् सायुधैर्हरिभिर्वृतः ।
अभ्यधावत संक्रुद्धो राक्षसेन्द्रसुतं प्रति ॥२२॥
22. iti bruvāṇo hanumān sāyudhairharibhirvṛtaḥ ,
abhyadhāvata saṃkruddho rākṣasendrasutaṃ prati.
22. iti bruvāṇaḥ hanumān sa-āyudhaiḥ haribhiḥ vṛtaḥ
abhyadhāvata saṃkruddhaḥ rākṣasendra-sutam prati
22. iti bruvāṇaḥ saṃkruddhaḥ sa-āyudhaiḥ haribhiḥ
vṛtaḥ hanumān rākṣasendra-sutam prati abhyadhāvata
22. Thus speaking, Hanumān, greatly enraged and surrounded by weapon-wielding monkeys, rushed towards the son of the king of rākṣasas (Indrajit).
आपतन्तं महावीर्यं तदनीकं वनौकसाम् ।
रक्षसां भीमवेगानामनीकेन न्यवारयत् ॥२३॥
23. āpatantaṃ mahāvīryaṃ tadanīkaṃ vanaukasām ,
rakṣasāṃ bhīmavegānāmanīkena nyavārayat.
23. āpatantam mahāvīryam tat anīkam vanaukasām
rakṣasām bhīmavegānām anīkena nyavārayat
23. bhīmavegānām rakṣasām anīkena āpatantam
mahāvīryam tat vanaukasām anīkam nyavārayat
23. He repelled that extremely mighty army of monkeys (vanaukas) which was approaching, using his own army of rākṣasas, known for their terrifying swiftness.
स तां बाणसहस्रेण विक्षोभ्य हरिवाहिनीम् ।
हरिश्रेष्ठं हनूमन्तमिन्द्रजित् प्रत्युवाच ह ॥२४॥
24. sa tāṃ bāṇasahasreṇa vikṣobhya harivāhinīm ,
hariśreṣṭhaṃ hanūmantamindrajit pratyuvāca ha.
24. saḥ tām bāṇasahasreṇa vikṣobhya harivāhinīm
hariśreṣṭham hanūmantam indrajit pratyuvāca ha
24. saḥ indrajit bāṇasahasreṇa tām harivāhinīm
vikṣobhya hariśreṣṭham hanūmantam ha pratyuvāca
24. Having thoroughly agitated that monkey army with thousands of arrows, Indrajit then spoke to Hanumān, the best of the monkeys.
सुग्रीवस्त्वं च रामश्च यन्निमित्तमिहागताः ।
तां हनिष्यामि वैदेहीमद्यैव तव पश्यतः ॥२५॥
25. sugrīvastvaṃ ca rāmaśca yannimittamihāgatāḥ ,
tāṃ haniṣyāmi vaidehīmadyaiva tava paśyataḥ.
25. sugrīvaḥ tvam ca rāmaḥ ca yat-nimittam iha āgatāḥ
tām haniṣyāmi vaidehīm adya eva tava paśyataḥ
25. yat-nimittam sugrīvaḥ ca tvam ca rāmaḥ ca iha āgatāḥ
tām vaidehīm adya eva tava paśyataḥ haniṣyāmi
25. That Vaidehī (Sītā), for whose sake Sugrīva, you (Hanumān), and Rāma have come here, I will kill her today itself, right before your eyes.
इमां हत्वा ततो रामं लक्ष्मणं त्वां च वानर ।
सुग्रीवं च वधिष्यामि तं चानार्यं विभीषणम् ॥२६॥
26. imāṃ hatvā tato rāmaṃ lakṣmaṇaṃ tvāṃ ca vānara ,
sugrīvaṃ ca vadhiṣyāmi taṃ cānāryaṃ vibhīṣaṇam.
26. imām hatvā tataḥ rāmam lakṣmaṇam tvām ca vānara
sugrīvam ca vadhiṣyāmi tam ca anāryam vibhīṣaṇam
26. vānara imām hatvā tataḥ rāmam lakṣmaṇam ca tvām
sugrīvam ca tam anāryam vibhīṣaṇam ca vadhiṣyāmi
26. Having killed this (Sītā), O monkey, I will then slay Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa, you, Sugrīva, and that ignoble Vibhīṣaṇa.
न हन्तव्याः स्त्रियश्चेति यद्ब्रवीषि प्लवंगम ।
पीडा करममित्राणां यत् स्यात् कर्तव्यमेत तत् ॥२७॥
27. na hantavyāḥ striyaśceti yadbravīṣi plavaṃgama ,
pīḍā karamamitrāṇāṃ yat syāt kartavyameta tat.
27. na hantavyāḥ striyaḥ ca iti yat bravīṣi plavaṅgama
pīḍākaram amitrāṇām yat syāt kartavyam etat tat
27. plavaṅgama yat "na striyaḥ ca hantavyāḥ" iti bravīṣi,
amitrāṇām yat pīḍākaram syāt,
etat tat kartavyam
27. O monkey (plavaṅgama), regarding what you say, 'Women should not be killed,' that which causes distress to enemies must be done.
तमेवमुक्त्वा रुदतीं सीतां मायामयीं ततः ।
शितधारेण खड्गेन निजघानेन्द्रजित् स्वयम् ॥२८॥
28. tamevamuktvā rudatīṃ sītāṃ māyāmayīṃ tataḥ ,
śitadhāreṇa khaḍgena nijaghānendrajit svayam.
28. tam evam uktvā rudatīm sītām māyāmayīm tataḥ
śitadhāreṇa khaḍgena nijaghāna indrajit svayam
28. indrajit tam evam uktvā tataḥ svayam śitadhāreṇa
khaḍgena rudatīm māyāmayīm sītām nijaghāna
28. Having spoken thus to him (Hanumān), Indrajit himself then struck the weeping, illusory (māyā) Sītā with a sharp-edged sword.
यज्ञोपवीतमार्गेण छिन्ना तेन तपस्विनी ।
सा पृथिव्यां पृथुश्रोणी पपात प्रियदर्शना ॥२९॥
29. yajñopavītamārgeṇa chinnā tena tapasvinī ,

29. Cut by him along the line of the sacred thread (yajñopavīta), that pitiable, broad-hipped, lovely-to-behold woman fell to the earth.
तामिन्द्रजित्स्त्रियं हत्वा हनूमन्तमुवाच ह ।
मया रामस्य पश्येमां कोपेन च निषूदिताम् ॥३०॥
30. tāmindrajitstriyaṃ hatvā hanūmantamuvāca ha ,
mayā rāmasya paśyemāṃ kopena ca niṣūditām.
30. tām indrajit striyam hatvā hanūmantam uvāca ha
mayā rāmasya paśya imām kopena ca niṣūditām
30. Having killed that woman, Indrajit then said to Hanūman, "Behold this woman, Rāma's wife, whom I have slain out of anger."
ततः खड्गेन महता हत्वा तामिन्द्रजित् स्वयम् ।
हृष्टः स रथमास्थाय विननाद महास्वनम् ॥३१॥
31. tataḥ khaḍgena mahatā hatvā tāmindrajit svayam ,
hṛṣṭaḥ sa rathamāsthāya vinanāda mahāsvanam.

31. Then Indrajit himself, having slain her with a mighty sword, joyfully mounted his chariot and let out a great roar.
वानराः शुश्रुवुः शब्दमदूरे प्रत्यवस्थिताः ।
व्यादितास्यस्य नदतस्तद्दुर्गं संश्रितस्य तु ॥३२॥
32. vānarāḥ śuśruvuḥ śabdamadūre pratyavasthitāḥ ,
vyāditāsyasya nadatastaddurgaṃ saṃśritasya tu.

32. The monkeys, stationed nearby, heard the sound of him who was roaring with an open mouth, having taken refuge in that fortress.
तथा तु सीतां विनिहत्य दुर्मतिः प्रहृष्टचेताः स बभूव रावणिः ।
तं हृष्टरूपं समुदीक्ष्य वानरा विषण्णरूपाः समभिप्रदुद्रुवुः ॥३३॥
33. tathā tu sītāṃ vinihatya durmatiḥ prahṛṣṭacetāḥ sa babhūva rāvaṇiḥ ,
taṃ hṛṣṭarūpaṃ samudīkṣya vānarā viṣaṇṇarūpāḥ samabhipradudruvuḥ.

33. Thus, having killed Sītā, that wicked son of Rāvaṇa became exceedingly joyful. When the monkeys saw him looking so triumphant, they, with despondent faces, quickly fled.
