उपविष्टास्तु ते सर्वे यस्मिन्प्रायं गिरिस्थले ।
हरयो गृध्रराजश्च तं देशमुपचक्रमे ॥१॥

1. And the king of vultures approached that spot on the mountain plateau where all those monkeys were seated, engaged in a fast unto death.

भ्राता जटायुषः श्रीमान्प्रख्यातबलपौरुषः ॥२॥
2. sāmpātirnāma nāmnā tu cirajīvī vihaṃgamaḥ ,
bhrātā jaṭāyuṣaḥ śrīmānprakhyātabalapauruṣaḥ.

2. Indeed, a long-lived bird named Sampāti, the glorious brother of Jaṭāyu, renowned for his strength and valor.
कन्दरादभिनिष्क्रम्य स विन्ध्यस्य महागिरेः ।
उपविष्टान् हरीन्दृष्ट्वा हृष्टात्मा गिरमब्रवीत् ॥३॥
3. kandarādabhiniṣkramya sa vindhyasya mahāgireḥ ,
upaviṣṭān harīndṛṣṭvā hṛṣṭātmā giramabravīt.
3. kandarāt abhiniṣkramya saḥ vindhyasya mahāgireḥ

3. Having emerged from a cave of the great Vindhya mountain, he (Sampāti) saw the seated monkeys and, with a joyous spirit, spoke these words.
विधिः किल नरं लोके विधानेनानुवर्तते ।
यथायं विहितो भक्ष्यश्चिरान्मह्यमुपागतः ॥४॥
4. vidhiḥ kila naraṃ loke vidhānenānuvartate ,
yathāyaṃ vihito bhakṣyaścirānmahyamupāgataḥ.
4. vidhiḥ kila naraṃ loke vidhānen anuvartate yathā
ayaṃ vihitaḥ bhakṣyaḥ cirān mahyam upāgataḥ
4. kila loke vidhiḥ vidhānen naraṃ anuvartate yathā

4. Indeed, fate (vidhi) surely follows a person in this world by its own arrangement. Just so, this ordained food has arrived for me after a long time.
परम्पराणां भक्षिष्ये वानराणां मृतं मृतम् ।
उवाचैवं वचः पक्षी तान्निरीक्ष्य प्लवंगमान् ॥५॥
5. paramparāṇāṃ bhakṣiṣye vānarāṇāṃ mṛtaṃ mṛtam ,
uvācaivaṃ vacaḥ pakṣī tānnirīkṣya plavaṃgamān.

uvāca evaṃ vacaḥ pakṣī tān nirīkṣya plavaṅgamān

pakṣī tān plavaṅgamān nirīkṣya evaṃ vacaḥ uvāca
5. I shall eat the dead monkeys, one after another, from their successive generations. The bird spoke these words, looking at those monkeys.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा भक्षलुब्धस्य पक्षिणः ।
अङ्गदः परमायस्तो हनूमन्तमथाब्रवीत् ॥६॥
6. tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā bhakṣalubdhasya pakṣiṇaḥ ,
aṅgadaḥ paramāyasto hanūmantamathābravīt.
6. tasya tat vacanaṃ śrutvā bhakṣalubdhasya pakṣiṇaḥ
aṅgadaḥ paramāyastaḥ hanūmantaṃ atha abravīt
6. bhakṣalubdhasya tasya pakṣiṇaḥ tat vacanaṃ śrutvā
paramāyastaḥ aṅgadaḥ atha hanūmantaṃ abravīt
6. Having heard those words from that bird, which was greedy for food, Angada, who was extremely distressed, then spoke to Hanumat.
पश्य सीतापदेशेन साक्षाद्वैवस्वतो यमः ।
इमं देशमनुप्राप्तो वानराणां विपत्तये ॥७॥
7. paśya sītāpadeśena sākṣādvaivasvato yamaḥ ,
imaṃ deśamanuprāpto vānarāṇāṃ vipattaye.
7. paśya sītāpadesena sākṣāt vaivasvataḥ yamaḥ
imaṃ deśaṃ anuprāptaḥ vānarāṇāṃ vipattaye
7. paśya! sākṣāt vaivasvataḥ yamaḥ
sītāpadesenavānarāṇāṃ vipattaye imaṃ deśaṃ anuprāptaḥ
7. Behold! Yama (Yama), the son of Vivasvat, has arrived here in person, using Sītā as a pretext, for the destruction of the monkeys.
रामस्य न कृतं कार्यं राज्ञो न च वचः कृतम् ।
हरीणामियमज्ञाता विपत्तिः सहसागता ॥८॥
8. rāmasya na kṛtaṃ kāryaṃ rājño na ca vacaḥ kṛtam ,
harīṇāmiyamajñātā vipattiḥ sahasāgatā.
8. rāmasya na kṛtam kāryam rājñaḥ na ca vacaḥ
kṛtam harīṇām iyam ajñātā vipattiḥ sahasā āgatā
8. rāmasya kāryam na kṛtam rājñaḥ vacaḥ ca na
kṛtam harīṇām iyam ajñātā vipattiḥ sahasā āgatā
8. Neither was Rāma's objective achieved, nor was the king's command carried out. This unforeseen calamity has suddenly befallen the monkeys.
वैदेह्याः प्रियकामेन कृतं कर्म जटायुषा ।
गृध्रराजेन यत्तत्र श्रुतं वस्तदशेषतः ॥९॥
9. vaidehyāḥ priyakāmena kṛtaṃ karma jaṭāyuṣā ,
gṛdhrarājena yattatra śrutaṃ vastadaśeṣataḥ.
9. vaidehyāḥ priyakāmena kṛtam karma jaṭāyuṣā
gṛdhrarājena yat tatra śrutam vaḥ tat aśeṣataḥ
9. jaṭāyuṣā vaidehyāḥ priyakāmena karma kṛtam
gṛdhrarājena yat tatra vaḥ śrutam tat aśeṣataḥ
9. The deed was performed by Jaṭāyu, desiring the welfare of Vaidehī. Whatever you heard there from the king of vultures, that was the complete account.
तथा सर्वाणि भूतानि तिर्यग्योनिगतान्यपि ।
प्रियं कुर्वन्ति रामस्य त्यक्त्वा प्राणान्यथा वयम् ॥१०॥
10. tathā sarvāṇi bhūtāni tiryagyonigatānyapi ,
priyaṃ kurvanti rāmasya tyaktvā prāṇānyathā vayam.
10. tathā sarvāṇi bhūtāni tiryagyonigatāni api priyam
kurvanti rāmasya tyaktvā prāṇān yathā vayam
10. tathā sarvāṇi bhūtāni tiryagyonigatāni api
rāmasya priyam kurvanti prāṇān tyaktvā yathā vayam
10. Similarly, all creatures, even those born in animal species, do what is pleasing to Rāma, abandoning their lives, just as we do.
राघवार्थे परिश्रान्ता वयं संत्यक्तजीविताः ।
कान्ताराणि प्रपन्नाः स्म न च पश्याम मैथिलीम् ॥११॥
11. rāghavārthe pariśrāntā vayaṃ saṃtyaktajīvitāḥ ,
kāntārāṇi prapannāḥ sma na ca paśyāma maithilīm.

kāntārāṇi prapannāḥ sma na ca paśyāma maithilīm
11. vayam rāghavārthe pariśrāntāḥ saṃtyaktajīvitāḥ

11. For the sake of Rāghava, we are utterly exhausted and have given up our lives. We have thoroughly searched the wildernesses, yet we do not see Maithilī.
स सुखी गृध्रराजस्तु रावणेन हतो रणे ।
मुक्तश्च सुग्रीवभयाद्गतश्च परमां गतिम् ॥१२॥
12. sa sukhī gṛdhrarājastu rāvaṇena hato raṇe ,
muktaśca sugrīvabhayādgataśca paramāṃ gatim.
12. sa sukhī gṛdhrarājaḥ tu rāvaṇena hataḥ raṇe
muktaḥ ca sugrīvabhayāt gataḥ ca parām gatim
12. gṛdhrarājaḥ tu saḥ raṇe rāvaṇena hataḥ sukhī
ca sugrīvabhayāt muktaḥ ca parām gatim gataḥ
12. That king of vultures, Jaṭāyu, killed by Rāvaṇa in battle, became happy. He was also freed from the fear of Sugrīva and attained the supreme destination.
जटायुषो विनाशेन राज्ञो दशरथस्य च ।
हरणेन च वैदेह्याः संशयं हरयो गताः ॥१३॥
13. jaṭāyuṣo vināśena rājño daśarathasya ca ,
haraṇena ca vaidehyāḥ saṃśayaṃ harayo gatāḥ.
13. jaṭāyuṣaḥ vināśena rājñaḥ daśarathasya ca
haraṇena ca vaidehyāḥ saṁśayam harayaḥ gatāḥ
13. jaṭāyuṣaḥ ca rājñaḥ daśarathasya vināśena ca
vaidehyāḥ haraṇena harayaḥ saṁśayam gatāḥ
13. Because of the demise of Jaṭāyu and King Daśaratha, and the abduction of Vaidehī (Sītā), the monkeys became uncertain.
रामलक्ष्मणयोर्वासामरण्ये सह सीतया ।
राघवस्य च बाणेन वालिनश्च तथा वधः ॥१४॥
14. rāmalakṣmaṇayorvāsāmaraṇye saha sītayā ,
rāghavasya ca bāṇena vālinaśca tathā vadhaḥ.
14. rāmalakṣmaṇayoḥ vāsam araṇye saha sītayā
rāghavasya ca bāṇena vālinaḥ ca tathā vadhaḥ
14. sītayā saha rāmalakṣmaṇayoḥ araṇye vāsam ca
tathā rāghavasya bāṇena vālinaḥ vadhaḥ ca
14. The dwelling of Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa in the forest with Sītā, and likewise, the slaying of Vālin by Rāghava's (Rāma's) arrow.
रामकोपादशेषाणां राक्षसानां तथा वधः ।
कैकेय्या वरदानेन इदं हि विकृतं कृतम् ॥१५॥
15. rāmakopādaśeṣāṇāṃ rākṣasānāṃ tathā vadhaḥ ,
kaikeyyā varadānena idaṃ hi vikṛtaṃ kṛtam.
15. rāmakopāt aśeṣāṇām rākṣasānām tathā vadhaḥ
kaikeyā varadānena idam hi vikṛtam kṛtam
15. tathā rāmakopāt aśeṣāṇām rākṣasānām vadhaḥ
kaikeyā varadānena idam vikṛtam hi kṛtam
15. Likewise, the killing of all the Rākṣasas due to Rāma's wrath. Indeed, this distorted situation was created by Kaikeyī's granting of a boon.
तत्तु श्रुत्वा तदा वाक्यमङ्गदस्य मुखोद्गतम् ।
अब्रवीद्वचनं गृध्रस्तीक्ष्णतुण्डो महास्वनः ॥१६॥
16. tattu śrutvā tadā vākyamaṅgadasya mukhodgatam ,
abravīdvacanaṃ gṛdhrastīkṣṇatuṇḍo mahāsvanaḥ.
16. tat tu śrutvā tadā vākyam aṅgadasya mukhodgatam
abravīt vacanam gṛdhraḥ tīkṣṇatuṇḍaḥ mahāsvanaḥ
16. tadā aṅgadasya mukhodgatam tat vākyam śrutvā
tīkṣṇatuṇḍaḥ mahāsvanaḥ gṛdhraḥ vacanam abravīt
16. Having heard that speech which had issued from Angada's mouth, the sharp-beaked, loud-voiced vulture then spoke.
को ऽयं गिरा घोषयति प्राणैः प्रियतरस्य मे ।
जटायुषो वधं भ्रातुः कम्पयन्निव मे मनः ॥१७॥
17. ko'yaṃ girā ghoṣayati prāṇaiḥ priyatarasya me ,
jaṭāyuṣo vadhaṃ bhrātuḥ kampayanniva me manaḥ.
17. kaḥ ayam girā ghoṣayati prāṇaiḥ priyatarasya me
jaṭāyuṣaḥ vadham bhrātuḥ kampayan iva me manaḥ
17. kaḥ ayam prāṇaiḥ priyatarasya me bhrātuḥ jaṭāyuṣaḥ
vadham girā ghoṣayati me manaḥ kampayan iva
17. Who is this proclaiming with a voice the death of my brother Jaṭāyu, who was dearer to me than life itself, thereby seemingly shaking my mind?
कथमासीज्जनस्थाने युद्धं राक्षसगृध्रयोः ।
नामधेयमिदं भ्रातुश्चिरस्याद्य मया श्रुतम् ॥१८॥
18. kathamāsījjanasthāne yuddhaṃ rākṣasagṛdhrayoḥ ,
nāmadheyamidaṃ bhrātuścirasyādya mayā śrutam.
18. katham āsīt janasthāne yuddham rākṣasagṛdhrayoḥ
nāmadheyam idam bhrātuḥ cirasya adya mayā śrutam
18. katham janasthāne rākṣasagṛdhrayoḥ yuddham āsīt
adya cirasya idam bhrātuḥ nāmadheyam mayā śrutam
18. How did a battle between a demon (rākṣasa) and a vulture take place in Janasthāna? I have heard this name of my brother today after a long time.
यवीयसो गुणज्ञस्य श्लाघनीयस्य विक्रमैः ।
तदिच्छेयमहं श्रोतुं विनाशं वानरर्षभाः ॥१९॥
19. yavīyaso guṇajñasya ślāghanīyasya vikramaiḥ ,
tadiccheyamahaṃ śrotuṃ vināśaṃ vānararṣabhāḥ.
19. yavīyasaḥ guṇajñasya ślāghanīyasya vikramaiḥ
tat iccheyam aham śrotum vināśam vānararṣabhāḥ
19. vānararṣabhāḥ aham yavīyasaḥ guṇajñasya vikramaiḥ
ślāghanīyasya tat vināśam śrotum iccheyam
19. O best of monkeys (vānararṣabhāḥ), I wish to hear about the destruction of my younger brother, who was discerning of virtues and praiseworthy for his valor.
भ्रातुर्जटायुषस्तस्य जनस्थाननिवासिनः ।
तस्यैव च मम भ्रातुः सखा दशरथः कथम् ।
यस्य रामः प्रियः पुत्रो ज्येष्ठो गुरुजनप्रियः ॥२०॥
20. bhrāturjaṭāyuṣastasya janasthānanivāsinaḥ ,
tasyaiva ca mama bhrātuḥ sakhā daśarathaḥ katham ,
yasya rāmaḥ priyaḥ putro jyeṣṭho gurujanapriyaḥ.
20. bhrātuḥ jaṭāyuṣaḥ tasya janasthānanivāsinaḥ
tasya eva ca mama bhrātuḥ
sakhā daśarathaḥ katham yasya rāmaḥ
priyaḥ putraḥ jyeṣṭhaḥ gurujanapriyaḥ
20. mama bhrātuḥ jaṭāyuṣaḥ tasya
janasthānanivāsinaḥ tasya eva ca sakhā
daśarathaḥ katham yasya priyaḥ
jyeṣṭhaḥ putraḥ rāmaḥ gurujanapriyaḥ
20. How fares Daśaratha, the friend of my brother Jaṭāyu, who used to reside in Janasthāna? He is the one whose dear, eldest son Rāma is beloved by his revered elders.
सूर्यांशुदग्धपक्षत्वान्न शक्नोमि विसर्पितुम् ।
इच्छेयं पर्वतादस्मादवतर्तुमरिंदमाः ॥२१॥
21. sūryāṃśudagdhapakṣatvānna śaknomi visarpitum ,
iccheyaṃ parvatādasmādavatartumariṃdamāḥ.
21. sūryāṃśudagdhapakṣatvāt na śaknomi visarpitum
iccheyam parvatāt asmāt avatartum ariṃdamāḥ
21. sūryāṃśudagdhapakṣatvāt na śaknomi visarpitum
he ariṃdamāḥ asmāt parvatāt avatartum iccheyam
21. Because my wings are burnt by the sun's rays, I am unable to fly. O vanquishers of foes, I wish to descend from this mountain.
