तस्मिन् हते राक्षससैन्यपाले प्लवंगमानामृषभेण युद्धे ।
भीमायुधं सागरतुल्यवेगं प्रदुद्रुवे राक्षसराजसैन्यम् ॥१॥

1. When that commander of the demon army was killed in battle by the chief of the monkeys, the army of the demon king, possessing formidable weapons and speed comparable to the ocean, fled.
गत्वा तु रक्षोऽधिपतेः शशंसुः सेनापतिं पावकसूनुशस्तम् ।
तच्चापि तेषां वचनं निशम्य रक्षोऽधिपः क्रोधवशं जगाम ॥२॥
2. gatvā tu rakṣo'dhipateḥ śaśaṃsuḥ senāpatiṃ pāvakasūnuśastam ,
taccāpi teṣāṃ vacanaṃ niśamya rakṣo'dhipaḥ krodhavaśaṃ jagāma.
2. gatvā tu rakṣaḥ adhipateḥ śaśaṃsuḥ
senāpatiṃ pāvakasūnuśastam tat
ca api teṣāṃ vacanaṃ niśamya
rakṣaḥ adhipaḥ krodhavaśaṃ jagāma
2. Having gone there, they reported to the lord of the rākṣasas that his commander had been slain by the son of fire (Hanuman). And upon hearing their words, the lord of the rākṣasas became overwhelmed by anger.
संख्ये प्रहस्तं निहतं निशम्य शोकार्दितः क्रोधपरीतचेताः ।
उवाच तान्नैरृतयोधमुख्यानिन्द्रो यथा चामरयोधमुख्यान् ॥३॥
3. saṃkhye prahastaṃ nihataṃ niśamya śokārditaḥ krodhaparītacetāḥ ,
uvāca tānnairṛtayodhamukhyānindro yathā cāmarayodhamukhyān.
3. saṃkhye prahastaṃ nihataṃ niśamya
śoka arditaḥ krodha parīta cetāḥ
uvāca tān nairṛta yodha mukhyān
indraḥ yathā cāmara yodha mukhyān
3. Upon hearing that Prahasta had been slain in battle, [Rāvaṇa], afflicted by sorrow and with his mind engulfed by rage, spoke to the chief rākṣasa warriors, just as Indra would address the chief divine warriors.
नावज्ञा रिपवे कार्या यैरिन्द्रबलसूदनः ।
सूदितः सैन्यपालो मे सानुयात्रः सकुञ्जरः ॥४॥
4. nāvajñā ripave kāryā yairindrabalasūdanaḥ ,
sūditaḥ sainyapālo me sānuyātraḥ sakuñjaraḥ.
4. na avajñā ripave kāryā yaiḥ indrabalasūdanaḥ
sūditaḥ sainyapālaḥ me sānuyātraḥ sakuñjaraḥ
4. One should not show disrespect to an enemy by whom my army general, the destroyer of Indra's forces, was slain, along with his retinue and elephants.
सो ऽहं रिपुविनाशाय विजयायाविचारयन् ।
स्वयमेव गमिष्यामि रणशीर्षं तदद्भुतम् ॥५॥
5. so'haṃ ripuvināśāya vijayāyāvicārayan ,
svayameva gamiṣyāmi raṇaśīrṣaṃ tadadbhutam.
5. saḥ ahaṃ ripuvināśāya vijayāya avicārayan
svayaṃ eva gamiṣyāmi raṇaśīrṣaṃ tat adbhutam
5. Therefore, without hesitation, I myself will go to that formidable battlefield for the enemy's destruction and for victory.
अद्य तद्वानरानीकं रामं च सहलक्ष्मणम् ।
निर्दहिष्यामि बाणौघैर्वनं दीप्तैरिवाग्निभिः ॥६॥
6. adya tadvānarānīkaṃ rāmaṃ ca sahalakṣmaṇam ,
nirdahiṣyāmi bāṇaughairvanaṃ dīptairivāgnibhiḥ.
6. adya tat vānarānīkam rāmam ca sahalakṣmaṇam
nirdahiṣyāmi bāṇaughaiḥ vanam dīptaiḥ iva agnibhiḥ
6. adya nirdahiṣyāmi tat vānarānīkam ca rāmam
sahalakṣmaṇam bāṇaughaiḥ vanam dīptaiḥ agnibhiḥ iva
6. Today, I will utterly destroy that monkey army, and Rāma along with Lakṣmaṇa, using volleys of arrows, just as blazing fires consume a forest.
स एवमुक्त्वा ज्वलनप्रकाशं रथं तुरंगोत्तमराजियुक्तम् ।
प्रकाशमानं वपुषा ज्वलन्तं समारुरोहामरराजशत्रुः ॥७॥
7. sa evamuktvā jvalanaprakāśaṃ rathaṃ turaṃgottamarājiyuktam ,
prakāśamānaṃ vapuṣā jvalantaṃ samārurohāmararājaśatruḥ.
7. saḥ evam uktvā jvalanaprakāśam ratham turaṅgottamarājiyuktam
prakāśamānam vapuṣā jvalantam samāruruha amararājaśatruḥ

7. Having spoken thus, the enemy of the king of gods (Indra) mounted that chariot which shone like blazing fire, was equipped with a line of excellent horses, and was radiant with splendor.
स शङ्खभेरीपटह प्रणादैरास्फोटितक्ष्वेडितसिंहनादैः ।
पुण्यैः स्तवैश्चाप्यभिपूज्यमानस्तदा ययौ राक्षसराजमुख्यः ॥८॥
8. sa śaṅkhabherīpaṭaha praṇādairāsphoṭitakṣveḍitasiṃhanādaiḥ ,
puṇyaiḥ stavaiścāpyabhipūjyamānastadā yayau rākṣasarājamukhyaḥ.
8. saḥ śaṅkhabherīpaṭahapraṇādaiḥ
āsphoṭitakṣveḍitasiṃhanādaiḥ
puṇyaiḥ stavaiḥ ca api abhipūjyamānaḥ
tadā yayau rākṣasarājamukhyaḥ

śaṅkhabherīpaṭahapraṇādaiḥ
āsphoṭitakṣveḍitasiṃhanādaiḥ puṇyaiḥ
stavaiḥ ca api abhipūjyamānaḥ yayau
8. Then, that chief of the demon kings (Rākṣasarāja), being honored by the sounds of conchs, drums, and kettledrums, and also by arm-slaps, war-cries, and lion-like roars, and by auspicious praises, proceeded.
स शैलजीमूतनिकाश रूपैर्मांसाशनैः पावकदीप्तनेत्रैः ।
बभौ वृतो राक्षसराजमुख्यैर्भूतैर्वृतो रुद्र इवामरेशः ॥९॥
9. sa śailajīmūtanikāśa rūpairmāṃsāśanaiḥ pāvakadīptanetraiḥ ,
babhau vṛto rākṣasarājamukhyairbhūtairvṛto rudra ivāmareśaḥ.
9. saḥ śailajīmūtanikāśarūpaiḥ
māṃsāśanaiḥ pāvakadīptanetraiḥ babhau
vṛtaḥ rākṣasarājamukhyaiḥ
bhūtaiḥ vṛtaḥ rudraḥ iva amareśaḥ
9. saḥ rākṣasarājamukhyaḥ śailajīmūtanikāśarūpaiḥ
māṃsāśanaiḥ pāvakadīptanetraiḥ
rākṣasarājamukhyaiḥ vṛtaḥ babhau
amareśaḥ rudraḥ bhūtaiḥ vṛtaḥ iva
9. That chief of the demon kings (Rākṣasarāja), surrounded by other principal demons whose forms were like mountains and clouds, who consumed flesh, and whose eyes blazed like fire, appeared splendid. He was like Rudra, the lord of immortals, when surrounded by his hosts of spirits (bhūtas).
ततो नगर्याः सहसा महौजा निष्क्रम्य तद्वानरसैन्यमुग्रम् ।
महार्णवाभ्रस्तनितं ददर्श समुद्यतं पादपशैलहस्तम् ॥१०॥
10. tato nagaryāḥ sahasā mahaujā niṣkramya tadvānarasainyamugram ,
mahārṇavābhrastanitaṃ dadarśa samudyataṃ pādapaśailahastam.
10. tataḥ nagaryāḥ sahasā mahaujāḥ
niṣkramya tat vānarasainyam
ugram mahārṇavābhrastanitam
dadarśa samudyatam pādapaśailahastam

10. Then, the mighty Rāma, suddenly emerging from the city, saw that fierce monkey army, roaring like great oceans and clouds, standing ready with trees and rocks in their hands.
तद् राक्षसानीकमतिप्रचण्डमालोक्य रामो भुजगेन्द्रबाहुः ।
विभीषणं शस्त्रभृतां वरिष्ठमुवाच सेनानुगतः पृथुश्रीः ॥११॥
11. tad rākṣasānīkamatipracaṇḍamālokya rāmo bhujagendrabāhuḥ ,
vibhīṣaṇaṃ śastrabhṛtāṃ variṣṭhamuvāca senānugataḥ pṛthuśrīḥ.
11. tat rākṣasānīkam atipracaṇḍam
ālokya rāmaḥ bhujagendrabāhuḥ
vibhīṣaṇam śastrabhutām variṣṭham
uvāca senānugataḥ pṛthuśrīḥ
11. rāmaḥ bhujagendrabāhuḥ senānugataḥ
pṛthuśrīḥ tat atipracaṇḍam
rākṣasānīkam ālokya śastrabhutām
variṣṭham vibhīṣaṇam uvāca
11. Seeing that exceedingly fierce army of rākṣasas, Rāma, whose arms were like those of the king of serpents, accompanied by his army and possessing great splendor, spoke to Vibhīṣaṇa, who was the foremost among weapon-bearers.
नानापताकाध्वजशस्त्रजुष्टं प्रासासिशूलायुधचक्रजुष्टम् ।
सैन्यं नगेन्द्रोपमनागजुष्टं कस्येदमक्षोभ्यमभीरुजुष्टम् ॥१२॥
12. nānāpatākādhvajaśastrajuṣṭaṃ prāsāsiśūlāyudhacakrajuṣṭam ,
sainyaṃ nagendropamanāgajuṣṭaṃ kasyedamakṣobhyamabhīrujuṣṭam.

prāsāsiśūlāyudhacakrajūṣṭam
sainyam nagendropamanāgajūṣṭam
kasya idam akṣobhyam abhīrujūṣṭam

12. Adorned with various banners, flags, and weapons, equipped with spears, swords, tridents, and chakras, an army filled with elephants resembling great mountains - whose is this unshakeable army, supported by fearless warriors?
ततस्तु रामस्य निशम्य वाक्यं विभीषणः शक्रसमानवीर्यः ।
शशंस रामस्य बलप्रवेकं महात्मनां राक्षसपुंगवानाम् ॥१३॥
13. tatastu rāmasya niśamya vākyaṃ vibhīṣaṇaḥ śakrasamānavīryaḥ ,
śaśaṃsa rāmasya balapravekaṃ mahātmanāṃ rākṣasapuṃgavānām.
13. tataḥ tu rāmasya niśamya vākyam vibhīṣaṇaḥ śakrasamānavīryaḥ
śaśaṃsa rāmasya balapravekam mahātmanām rākṣasapuṅgavānām
13. tataḥ tu vibhīṣaṇaḥ śakrasamānavīryaḥ rāmasya vākyam niśamya
rāmasya mahātmanām rākṣasapuṅgavānām balapravekam śaśaṃsa
13. Then, having heard Rāma's words, Vibhīṣaṇa, whose valor was equal to Indra's, described to Rāma the formidable strength and prominence of the great-souled, foremost among the rākṣasa (demon) leaders.
यो ऽसौ गजस्कन्धगतो महात्मा नवोदितार्कोपमताम्रवक्त्रः ।
प्रकम्पयन्नागशिरो ऽभ्युपैति ह्यकम्पनं त्वेनमवेहि राजन् ॥१४॥
14. yo'sau gajaskandhagato mahātmā navoditārkopamatāmravaktraḥ ,
prakampayannāgaśiro'bhyupaiti hyakampanaṃ tvenamavehi rājan.
14. yaḥ asau gajaskandhagataḥ mahātmā
navoditārkopamatāmravaktraḥ
prakampayan nāgaśiraḥ abhyupaiti
hi Akampanam tu enam avehi rājan
14. rājan enam Akampanam avehi hi

nāgaśiraḥ prakampayan abhyupaiti
14. O King, know him to be Akampana - that great-souled (mahātmā) warrior who, mounted on an elephant's shoulder, approaches with a face reddish like the newly risen sun, causing the elephant's head to tremble.
यो ऽसौ रथस्थो मृगराजकेतुर्धून्वन्धनुः शक्रधनुःप्रकाशम् ।
करीव भात्युग्रविवृत्तदंष्ट्रः स इन्द्रजिन्नाम वरप्रधानः ॥१५॥
15. yo'sau rathastho mṛgarājaketurdhūnvandhanuḥ śakradhanuḥprakāśam ,
karīva bhātyugravivṛttadaṃṣṭraḥ sa indrajinnāma varapradhānaḥ.
15. yaḥ asau rathasthaḥ mṛgarājaketuḥ
dhūnvan dhanuḥ śakradhanuḥprakāśam
karī iva bhāti ugravivṛttadaṃṣṭraḥ
saḥ Indrajit nāma varapradhānaḥ
15. saḥ Indrajit nāma varapradhānaḥ
yaḥ asau rathasthaḥ mṛgarājaketuḥ
śakradhanuḥprakāśam dhanuḥ dhūnvan
ugravivṛttadaṃṣṭraḥ karī iva bhāti
15. That warrior, who stands on a chariot, whose banner bears the emblem of a lion, shaking a bow that gleams like Indra's (indra) rainbow, and who appears like an elephant with terrible, exposed tusks – he is none other than Indrajit by name, the supreme leader.
यश्चैष विन्ध्यास्तमहेन्द्रकल्पो धन्वी रथस्थो ऽतिरथो ऽतिवीर्यः ।
विस्फारयंश्चापमतुल्यमानं नाम्नातिकायो ऽतिविवृद्धकायः ॥१६॥
16. yaścaiṣa vindhyāstamahendrakalpo dhanvī rathastho'tiratho'tivīryaḥ ,
visphārayaṃścāpamatulyamānaṃ nāmnātikāyo'tivivṛddhakāyaḥ.
16. yaḥ ca eṣaḥ vindhyāstamamahendrakalpaḥ
dhanvī rathasthaḥ atirathaḥ
ativīryaḥ visphārayan ca cāpam atulyamānam
nāmnā Atikāyaḥ ativivṛddhakāyaḥ
16. ca eṣaḥ Atikāyaḥ nāmnā ativivṛddhakāyaḥ
yaḥ vindhyāstamamahendrakalpaḥ
dhanvī rathasthaḥ atirathaḥ
ativīryaḥ atulyamānam cāpam visphārayan
16. And this warrior, who stands on a chariot, an archer (dhanvi) like the Vindhya and Astamahēndra mountains, a supreme warrior of immense prowess, stretching his unparalleled bow – he is Atikāya by name, possessing an exceedingly colossal body.
यो ऽसौ नवार्कोदितताम्रचक्षुरारुह्य घण्टानिनदप्रणादम् ।
गजं खरं गर्जति वै महात्मा महोदरो नाम स एष वीरः ॥१७॥
17. yo'sau navārkoditatāmracakṣurāruhya ghaṇṭāninadapraṇādam ,
gajaṃ kharaṃ garjati vai mahātmā mahodaro nāma sa eṣa vīraḥ.
17. yaḥ asau navārkoditatāmracakṣuḥ
āruhya ghaṇṭāninadapraṇādam
gajam kharam garjati vai mahātmā
Mahodaraḥ nāma saḥ eṣaḥ vīraḥ
17. saḥ eṣaḥ vīraḥ Mahodaraḥ nāma
vai yaḥ asau mahātmā
navārkoditatāmracakṣuḥ ghaṇṭāninadapraṇādam
gajam āruhya kharam garjati
17. That great-souled (mahātmā) hero, whose eyes are reddish like the newly risen sun, mounts an elephant whose bells loudly peal, and then roars fiercely; he is indeed this warrior named Mahodara.
यो ऽसौ हयं काञ्चनचित्रभाण्डमारुह्य संध्याभ्रगिरिप्रकाशम् ।
प्रासं समुद्यम्य मरीचिनद्धं पिशाच एषाशनितुल्यवेगः ॥१८॥
18. yo'sau hayaṃ kāñcanacitrabhāṇḍamāruhya saṃdhyābhragiriprakāśam ,
prāsaṃ samudyamya marīcinaddhaṃ piśāca eṣāśanitulyavegaḥ.
18. yaḥ asau hayam kāñcanacitrabhaṇḍam
āruhya sandhyābhragiriprakāśam
prāsam samudyamya marīcinaddham
piśācaḥ eṣaḥ aśanitulyavegaḥ
18. eṣaḥ asau piśācaḥ yaḥ
kāñcanacitrabhaṇḍam sandhyābhragiriprakāśam
hayam āruhya marīcinaddham
prāsam samudyamya aśanitulyavegaḥ
18. That one, this demon (piśāca), who rides a horse adorned with golden and colorful trappings, shining like a mountain of twilight clouds, and wields a spear radiant with light, possesses a speed equal to a thunderbolt.
यश्चैष शूलं निशितं प्रगृह्य विद्युत्प्रभं किंकरवज्रवेगम् ।
वृषेन्द्रमास्थाय गिरिप्रकाशमायाति सो ऽसौ त्रिशिरा यशस्वी ॥१९॥
19. yaścaiṣa śūlaṃ niśitaṃ pragṛhya vidyutprabhaṃ kiṃkaravajravegam ,
vṛṣendramāsthāya giriprakāśamāyāti so'sau triśirā yaśasvī.
19. yaḥ ca eṣaḥ śūlam niśitam pragṛhya
vidyutprabham kiṃkaravajravegam
vṛṣendram āsthāya giriprakāśam
āyāti saḥ asau triśirāḥ yaśasvī
19. ca eṣaḥ yaḥ niśitam vidyutprabham
kiṃkaravajravegam śūlam pragṛhya
giriprakāśam vṛṣendram āsthāya
āyāti saḥ asau yaśasvī triśirāḥ
19. And this one who, holding a sharp, lightning-bright trident, having the force of a thunderbolt, comes riding a chief bull shining like a mountain - that is the renowned three-headed (triśirāḥ) one.
असौ च जीमूतनिकाश रूपः कुम्भः पृथुव्यूढसुजातवक्षाः ।
समाहितः पन्नगराजकेतुर्विस्फारयन्भाति धनुर्विधून्वन् ॥२०॥
20. asau ca jīmūtanikāśa rūpaḥ kumbhaḥ pṛthuvyūḍhasujātavakṣāḥ ,
samāhitaḥ pannagarājaketurvisphārayanbhāti dhanurvidhūnvan.
20. asau ca jīmūtanikāśarūpaḥ kumbhaḥ pṛthuvyūḍhasujātavakṣāḥ
samāhitaḥ pannagarājaketuḥ visphārayan bhāti dhanuḥ vidhūnvan
20. ca asau kumbhaḥ jīmūtanikāśarūpaḥ pṛthuvyūḍhasujātavakṣāḥ
samāhitaḥ pannagarājaketuḥ dhanuḥ visphārayan vidhūnvan bhāti
20. And that one, Kumbha, whose form resembles a cloud, with a broad, well-built, and handsome chest, appears focused and shines brightly, stretching and brandishing his bow, which bears the emblem of the king of serpents.
यश्चैष जाम्बूनदवज्रजुष्टं दीप्तं सधूमं परिघं प्रगृह्य ।
आयाति रक्षोबलकेतुभूतः सो ऽसौ निकुम्भो ऽद्भुतघोरकर्मा ॥२१॥
21. yaścaiṣa jāmbūnadavajrajuṣṭaṃ dīptaṃ sadhūmaṃ parighaṃ pragṛhya ,
āyāti rakṣobalaketubhūtaḥ so'sau nikumbho'dbhutaghorakarmā.
21. yaḥ ca eṣaḥ jāmbūnanadavajrajuṣṭam
dīptam sadhūmam parigham pragṛhya
āyāti rakṣasbalaketubhūtaḥ saḥ
asau nikumbhaḥ adbhutaghorakarmā
21. ca eṣaḥ yaḥ jāmbūnanadavajrajuṣṭam
dīptam sadhūmam parigham pragṛhya
rakṣasbalaketubhūtaḥ āyāti saḥ
asau nikumbhaḥ adbhutaghorakarmā
21. And this one who, holding a blazing, smoky iron bludgeon, brilliant like gold and a thunderbolt, comes serving as the standard-bearer for the demon army - that is Nikumbha, of wondrous and dreadful deeds.
यश्चैष चापासिशरौघजुष्टं पताकिनं पावकदीप्तरूपम् ।
रथं समास्थाय विभात्युदग्रो नरान्तको ऽसौ नगशृङ्गयोधी ॥२२॥
22. yaścaiṣa cāpāsiśaraughajuṣṭaṃ patākinaṃ pāvakadīptarūpam ,
rathaṃ samāsthāya vibhātyudagro narāntako'sau nagaśṛṅgayodhī.
22. yaḥ ca eṣaḥ cāpāsiśaraughajuṣṭam
patākinam pāvakadīptarūpam
ratham samāsthāya vibhāti udagraḥ
narāntakaḥ asau nagaśṛṅgayodhī
22. yaḥ ca eṣaḥ cāpāsiśaraughajuṣṭam
patākinam pāvakadīptarūpam
ratham samāsthāya udagraḥ vibhāti
asau narāntakaḥ nagaśṛṅgayodhī
22. And this mighty one, who, having mounted a chariot adorned with a bow, a sword, and a multitude of arrows, and bearing a banner, shines forth with a form blazing like fire - he is the destroyer of men, fighting on mountain peaks.
यश्चैष नानाविधघोररूपैर्व्याघ्रोष्ट्रनागेन्द्रमृगेन्द्रवक्त्रैः ।
भूतैर्वृतो भाति विवृत्तनेत्रैः सो ऽसौ सुराणामपि दर्पहन्ता ॥२३॥
23. yaścaiṣa nānāvidhaghorarūpairvyāghroṣṭranāgendramṛgendravaktraiḥ ,
bhūtairvṛto bhāti vivṛttanetraiḥ so'sau surāṇāmapi darpahantā.
23. yaḥ ca eṣaḥ nānāvidhaghorarūpaiḥ
vyāghroṣṭranāgendramṛgendravaktraiḥ
bhūtaiḥ vṛtaḥ bhāti vivṛttanetraiḥ
saḥ asau surāṇām api darpahantā
23. yaḥ ca eṣaḥ nānāvidhaghorarūpaiḥ
vyāghroṣṭranāgendramṛgendravaktraiḥ
vivṛttanetraiḥ bhūtaiḥ vṛtaḥ
bhāti saḥ asau surāṇām api darpahantā
23. And this one, surrounded by dreadful beings (bhūta) of various kinds, whose faces resemble those of tigers, camels, mighty elephants, and lions, and who shines with rolling eyes - he is indeed the vanquisher of even the pride of the gods.
यत्रैतदिन्दुप्रतिमं विभातिच्छत्त्रं सितं सूक्ष्मशलाकमग्र्यम् ।
अत्रैष रक्षोऽधिपतिर्महात्मा भूतैर्वृतो रुद्र इवावभाति ॥२४॥

24. Where this excellent, white parasol, resembling the moon and possessing fine spokes, shines forth; there, this great-souled lord of rākṣasas, surrounded by (bhūta) beings, appears like Rudra.
असौ किरीटी चलकुण्डलास्यो नागेन्द्रविन्ध्योपमभीमकायः ।
महेन्द्रवैवस्वतदर्पहन्ता रक्षोऽधिपः सूर्य इवावभाति ॥२५॥

25. This one, wearing a diadem, with a face adorned by swinging earrings, and a formidable body comparable to a lordly elephant or the Vindhya mountain - this lord of rākṣasas, who vanquishes the pride of Mahendra and Vaivasvata, shines like the sun.
प्रत्युवाच ततो रामो विभीषणमरिंदमम् ।
अहो दीप्तो महातेजा रावणो राक्षसेश्वरः ॥२६॥
26. pratyuvāca tato rāmo vibhīṣaṇamariṃdamam ,
aho dīpto mahātejā rāvaṇo rākṣaseśvaraḥ.

26. Then Rāma replied to Vibhīṣaṇa, the subduer of enemies: 'Oh, Rāvaṇa, the lord of rākṣasas, is indeed radiant and exceedingly powerful!'
आदित्य इव दुष्प्रेक्ष्यो रश्मिभिर्भाति रावणः ।
सुव्यक्तं लक्षये ह्यस्य रूपं तेजःसमावृतम् ॥२७॥
27. āditya iva duṣprekṣyo raśmibhirbhāti rāvaṇaḥ ,
suvyaktaṃ lakṣaye hyasya rūpaṃ tejaḥsamāvṛtam.

27. Rāvaṇa shines like the sun, difficult to behold due to his rays. Indeed, I clearly perceive his form to be enveloped in brilliance.
देवदानववीराणां वपुर्नैवंविधं भवेत् ।
यादृशं राक्षसेन्द्रस्य वपुरेतत् प्रकाशते ॥२८॥
28. devadānavavīrāṇāṃ vapurnaivaṃvidhaṃ bhavet ,

28. The physique of valorous gods or dānavas would not be of this nature, like the form that this lord of rākṣasas displays.
सर्वे पर्वतसंकाशाः सर्वे पर्वतयोधिनः ।
सर्वे दीप्तायुधधरा योधश्चास्य महौजसः ॥२९॥
29. sarve parvatasaṃkāśāḥ sarve parvatayodhinaḥ ,
sarve dīptāyudhadharā yodhaścāsya mahaujasaḥ.

29. All his warriors are mountain-like, all are mountain-fighters, all bear shining weapons, and they are of great energy.
भाति राक्षसराजो ऽसौ प्रदीप्तैर्भीमविक्रमैः ।
भूतैः परिवृतस्तीक्ष्णैर्देहवद्भिरिवान्तकः ॥३०॥
30. bhāti rākṣasarājo'sau pradīptairbhīmavikramaiḥ ,

30. That king of rākṣasas shines, surrounded by fierce, blazing, and terribly mighty beings, like Death (Antaka) himself accompanied by embodied spirits.
एवमुक्त्वा ततो रामो धनुरादाय वीर्यवान् ।
लक्ष्मणानुचरस्तस्थौ समुद्धृत्य शरोत्तमम् ॥३१॥
31. evamuktvā tato rāmo dhanurādāya vīryavān ,
lakṣmaṇānucarastasthau samuddhṛtya śarottamam.

31. Having spoken thus, the mighty Rāma then took his bow and, accompanied by Lakṣmaṇa, stood ready, having drawn forth an excellent arrow.

द्वारेषु चर्यागृहगोपुरेषु सुनिर्वृतास्तिष्ठत निर्विशङ्काः ॥३२॥

32. Then that mighty lord of rākṣasas spoke to those powerful rākṣasas: 'Stay fearlessly and well-established at the gates, guard-houses, and main gates!'
विसर्जयित्वा सहसा ततस्तान् गतेषु रक्षःसु यथानियोगम् ।
व्यदारयद्वानरसागरौघं महाझषः पूर्ममिवार्णवौघम् ॥३३॥
33. visarjayitvā sahasā tatastān gateṣu rakṣaḥsu yathāniyogam ,
vyadārayadvānarasāgaraughaṃ mahājhaṣaḥ pūrmamivārṇavaugham.

33. Having quickly dismissed them, and when those rākṣasas had departed according to their assignments, (Rāvaṇa) rent asunder the ocean-like multitude of monkeys, just as a great fish (mahājhaṣa) splits the current of the ocean.
तमापतन्तं सहसा समीक्ष्य दीप्तेषुचापं युधि राक्षसेन्द्रम् ।
महत् समुत्पाट्य महीधराग्रं दुद्राव रक्षोऽधिपतिं हरीशः ॥३४॥

34. Upon suddenly seeing that lord of rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa) approaching in battle with his shining bow and arrows, Sugrīva, the lord of monkeys, uprooted a large mountain peak and rushed towards the lord of rākṣasas.
तच्छैलशृङ्गं बहुवृक्षसानुं प्रगृह्य चिक्षेप निशाचराय ।
तमापतन्तं सहसा समीक्ष्य बिभेद बाणैस्तपनीयपुङ्खैः ॥३५॥
35. tacchailaśṛṅgaṃ bahuvṛkṣasānuṃ pragṛhya cikṣepa niśācarāya ,
tamāpatantaṃ sahasā samīkṣya bibheda bāṇaistapanīyapuṅkhaiḥ.

35. Having seized that mountain peak, which had many trees on its slopes, (Sugrīva) hurled it at the night-ranger (Rāvaṇa). Upon suddenly seeing it approaching, (Rāvaṇa) pierced it with arrows having golden shafts.
तस्मिन्प्रवृद्धोत्तमसानुवृक्षे शृङ्गे विकीर्णे पतिते पृथिव्याम् ।
महाहिकल्पं शरमन्तकाभं समाददे राक्षसलोकनाथः ॥३६॥
36. tasminpravṛddhottamasānuvṛkṣe śṛṅge vikīrṇe patite pṛthivyām ,
mahāhikalpaṃ śaramantakābhaṃ samādade rākṣasalokanāthaḥ.

36. When that mountain peak, with its excellent trees grown on its slopes, lay shattered and fallen to the earth, the lord of the rākṣasa people (Rāvaṇa) took up an arrow resembling a great serpent and appearing like Antaka (the god of death).
स तं गृहीत्वानिलतुल्यवेगं सविस्फुलिङ्गज्वलनप्रकाशम् ।
बाणं महेन्द्राशनितुल्यवेगं चिक्षेप सुग्रीववधाय रुष्टः ॥३७॥
37. sa taṃ gṛhītvānilatulyavegaṃ savisphuliṅgajvalanaprakāśam ,
bāṇaṃ mahendrāśanitulyavegaṃ cikṣepa sugrīvavadhāya ruṣṭaḥ.

37. Enraged, he (Rāvaṇa), having taken up that arrow which had the speed of the wind, shone like a blazing fire with sparks, and possessed a speed equal to Mahendra's thunderbolt, hurled it for the destruction of Sugrīva.
स सायको रावणबाहुमुक्तः शक्राशनिप्रख्यवपुः शिताग्रः ।
सुग्रीवमासाद्य बिभेद वेगाद्गुहेरिता क्रौचमिवोग्रशक्तिः ॥३८॥
38. sa sāyako rāvaṇabāhumuktaḥ śakrāśaniprakhyavapuḥ śitāgraḥ ,
sugrīvamāsādya bibheda vegādguheritā kraucamivograśaktiḥ.

38. The arrow, released from Rāvaṇa's arm, with a body resembling Indra's thunderbolt and a sharp tip, struck Sugrīva and pierced him swiftly, just as the powerful spear (śakti) propelled by Skanda (Guha) pierced Mount Krauñca.
स सायकार्तो विपरीतचेताः कूजन्पृथिव्यां निपपात वीरः ।
तं प्रेक्ष्य भूमौ पतितं विसंज्मं नेदुः प्रहृष्टा युधि यातुधानाः ॥३९॥
39. sa sāyakārto viparītacetāḥ kūjanpṛthivyāṃ nipapāta vīraḥ ,
taṃ prekṣya bhūmau patitaṃ visaṃjmaṃ neduḥ prahṛṣṭā yudhi yātudhānāḥ.

39. That hero, afflicted by the arrow and bewildered in mind, fell to the earth groaning. Seeing him fallen unconscious on the ground, the delighted Rākṣasas roared in battle.
ततो गवाक्षो गवयः सुदंष्ट्रस्तथर्षभो ज्योतिमुखो नलश्च ।
शैलान् समुद्यम्य विवृद्धकायाः प्रदुद्रुवुस्तं प्रति राक्षसेन्द्रम् ॥४०॥
40. tato gavākṣo gavayaḥ sudaṃṣṭrastatharṣabho jyotimukho nalaśca ,
śailān samudyamya vivṛddhakāyāḥ pradudruvustaṃ prati rākṣasendram.

40. Then, Gavākṣa, Gavaya, Sudaṃṣṭra, and also Ṛṣabha, Jyotimukha, and Nala, having enlarged their bodies and lifted up rocks, rushed towards that lord of Rākṣasas.
तेषां प्रहारान् स चकार मेघान् रक्षोऽधिपो बाणगणैः शिताग्रैः ।
तान् वानरेन्द्रानपि बाणजालैर्बिभेद जाम्बूनदचित्रपुङ्खैः ॥४१॥
41. teṣāṃ prahārān sa cakāra meghān rakṣo'dhipo bāṇagaṇaiḥ śitāgraiḥ ,
tān vānarendrānapi bāṇajālairbibheda jāmbūnadacitrapuṅkhaiḥ.

41. The lord of Rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa) rendered their attacks ineffective like clouds using his sharp-tipped multitudes of arrows. He also pierced those Vānara chiefs with showers of arrows that had decorative shafts made of Jambūnada gold.
ते वानरेन्द्रास्त्रिदशारिबाणैर्भिन्ना निपेतुर्भुवि भीमरूपाः ।
ततस्तु तद्वानरसैन्यमुग्रं प्रच्छादयामास स बाणजालैः ॥४२॥

tatastu tadvānarasainyamugraṃ pracchādayāmāsa sa bāṇajālaiḥ.

42. Those mighty monkey chiefs, struck by the arrows of the enemies of the gods, fell to the ground, appearing fearsome. Then, he completely covered that fierce monkey army with his volleys of arrows.
ते वध्यमानाः पतिताग्र्यवीरा नानद्यमाना भयशल्यविद्धाः ।
शाखामृगा रावणसायकार्ता जग्मुः शरण्यं शरणं स्म रामम् ॥४३॥
43. te vadhyamānāḥ patitāgryavīrā nānadyamānā bhayaśalyaviddhāḥ ,
śākhāmṛgā rāvaṇasāyakārtā jagmuḥ śaraṇyaṃ śaraṇaṃ sma rāmam.

43. Those foremost monkey warriors, being struck down, fallen, loudly wailing, pierced by the darts of fear, and tormented by Rāvaṇa's arrows, went to Rāma, who was their protector, seeking refuge.
ततो महात्मा स धनुर्धनुष्मानादाय रामः सहरा जगाम ।
तं लक्ष्मणः प्राञ्जलिरभ्युपेत्य उवाच वाक्यं परमार्थयुक्तम् ॥४४॥
44. tato mahātmā sa dhanurdhanuṣmānādāya rāmaḥ saharā jagāma ,
taṃ lakṣmaṇaḥ prāñjalirabhyupetya uvāca vākyaṃ paramārthayuktam.

44. Then that great-souled Rāma, the skilled archer, taking his bow, proceeded with his charioteer. Lakṣmaṇa, approaching him with folded hands, spoke words filled with profound meaning.
काममार्यः सुपर्याप्तो वधायास्य दुरात्मनः ।
विधमिष्याम्यहं नीचमनुजानीहि मां विभो ॥४५॥
45. kāmamāryaḥ suparyāpto vadhāyāsya durātmanaḥ ,
vidhamiṣyāmyahaṃ nīcamanujānīhi māṃ vibho.

vidhamiṣyāmi aham nīcam anujānīhi mām vibho

45. Indeed, O noble one, you are fully capable of slaying this evil-minded person. I will certainly destroy this vile individual; please permit me, O Lord!
तमब्रवीन्महातेजा रामः सत्यपराक्रमः ।
गच्छ यत्नपरश्चापि भव लक्ष्मण संयुगे ॥४६॥
46. tamabravīnmahātejā rāmaḥ satyaparākramaḥ ,
gaccha yatnaparaścāpi bhava lakṣmaṇa saṃyuge.

46. The greatly powerful Rama, whose valor was unwavering, said to him: "Go, Lakshmana, and be diligent in battle."
रावणो हि महावीर्यो रणे ऽद्भुतपराक्रमः ।
त्रैलोक्येनापि संक्रुद्धो दुष्प्रसह्यो न संशयः ॥४७॥
47. rāvaṇo hi mahāvīryo raṇe'dbhutaparākramaḥ ,
trailokyenāpi saṃkruddho duṣprasahyo na saṃśayaḥ.

trailokyena api saṃkruddhaḥ duṣprasahyaḥ na saṃśayaḥ
47. hi rāvaṇaḥ mahāvīryaḥ raṇe adbhutaparākramaḥ
saṃkruddhaḥ trailokyena api duṣprasahyaḥ na saṃśayaḥ
47. Indeed, Ravana is extremely powerful, possessing astonishing valor in battle. Even to the three worlds combined, he is difficult to withstand when enraged; there is no doubt about this.
तस्य च्छिद्राणि मार्गस्व स्वच्छिद्राणि च गोपय ।
चक्षुषा धनुषा यत्नाद् रक्षात्मानं समाहितः ॥४८॥
48. tasya cchidrāṇi mārgasva svacchidrāṇi ca gopaya ,
cakṣuṣā dhanuṣā yatnād rakṣātmānaṃ samāhitaḥ.

48. Seek out his weak points and conceal your own vulnerabilities. With your keen sight and your bow, carefully protect yourself (ātman), remaining highly concentrated.
राघवस्य वचः श्रुत्वा संपरिष्वज्य पूज्य च ।
अभिवाद्य ततो रामं ययौ सौमित्रिराहवम् ॥४९॥
49. rāghavasya vacaḥ śrutvā saṃpariṣvajya pūjya ca ,
abhivādya tato rāmaṃ yayau saumitrirāhavam.

49. Having heard Rama's words, and having embraced and honored him, Lakshmana (saumitri) then respectfully saluted Rama and proceeded to battle.
स रावणं वारणहस्तबाहुर्ददर्श दीप्तोद्यतभीमचापम् ।
प्रच्छादयन्तं शरवृष्टिजालैस्तान् वानरान्भिन्नविकीर्णदेहान् ॥५०॥
50. sa rāvaṇaṃ vāraṇahastabāhurdadarśa dīptodyatabhīmacāpam ,
pracchādayantaṃ śaravṛṣṭijālaistān vānarānbhinnavikīrṇadehān.

50. Hanūmān saw Rāvaṇa, whose arms were like elephant trunks, holding a shining, raised, and terrifying bow, covering those Vānaras, whose bodies were shattered and scattered, with a barrage of arrows.
तमालोक्य महातेजा हनूमान्मारुतात्मजा ।
निवार्य शरजालानि प्रदुद्राव स रावणम् ॥५१॥
51. tamālokya mahātejā hanūmānmārutātmajā ,
nivārya śarajālāni pradudrāva sa rāvaṇam.

51. Seeing him, the greatly resplendent Hanūmān, son of the wind god (Māruta), repelled the barrage of arrows and then rushed towards Rāvaṇa.
रथं तस्य समासाद्य भुजमुद्यम्य दक्षिणम् ।
त्रासयन् रावणं धीमान् हनूमान् वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥५२॥
52. rathaṃ tasya samāsādya bhujamudyamya dakṣiṇam ,
trāsayan rāvaṇaṃ dhīmān hanūmān vākyamabravīt.

52. Having reached Rāvaṇa's chariot, raising his right arm, the intelligent (dhīmān) Hanūmān, terrifying Rāvaṇa, spoke these words.
देवदानवगन्धर्वा यक्षाश्च सह राक्षसैः ।
अवध्यत्वात्त्वया भग्ना वानरेभ्यस्तु ते भयम् ॥५३॥
53. devadānavagandharvā yakṣāśca saha rākṣasaiḥ ,
avadhyatvāttvayā bhagnā vānarebhyastu te bhayam.

53. Even the Devas, Dānavas, Gandharvas, and Yakṣas, along with the Rākṣasas, were defeated by you because of your invulnerability. However, you now have fear from the Vānaras.
एष मे दक्षिणो बाहुः पञ्चशाखः समुद्यतः ।
विधमिष्यति ते देहाद्भूतात्मानं चिरोषितम् ॥५४॥
54. eṣa me dakṣiṇo bāhuḥ pañcaśākhaḥ samudyataḥ ,
vidhamiṣyati te dehādbhūtātmānaṃ ciroṣitam.

54. This, my five-fingered right arm, now raised, will blow away from your body that elemental self (bhūtātman) which has resided there for so long.
श्रुत्वा हनूमतो वाक्यं रावणो भीमविक्रमः ।
संरक्तनयनः क्रोधादिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥५५॥
55. śrutvā hanūmato vākyaṃ rāvaṇo bhīmavikramaḥ ,
saṃraktanayanaḥ krodhādidaṃ vacanamabravīt.

55. Having heard Hanumat's words, Ravana, of terrible valor, his eyes bloodshot with rage, spoke these words.
क्षिप्रं प्रहर निःशङ्कं स्थिरां कीर्तिमवाप्नुहि ।
ततस्त्वां ज्ञातिविक्रान्तं नाशयिष्यामि वानर ॥५६॥
56. kṣipraṃ prahara niḥśaṅkaṃ sthirāṃ kīrtimavāpnuhi ,
tatastvāṃ jñātivikrāntaṃ nāśayiṣyāmi vānara.

56. Strike quickly and fearlessly; achieve lasting fame. Thereafter, O monkey, I will destroy you, who are so valorous among your kinsmen.
रावणस्य वचः श्रुत्वा वायुसूनुर्वचो ऽब्रवीत् ।
प्रहृतं हि मया पूर्वमक्षं स्मर सुतं तव ॥५७॥
57. rāvaṇasya vacaḥ śrutvā vāyusūnurvaco'bravīt ,
prahṛtaṃ hi mayā pūrvamakṣaṃ smara sutaṃ tava.

57. Having heard Ravana's words, the son of Vayu (vāyusūnu) spoke: 'Indeed, your son Aksha was struck by me previously. Remember him!'
एवमुक्तो महातेजा रावणो राक्षसेश्वरः ।
आजघानानिलसुतं तलेनोरसि वीर्यवान् ॥५८॥
58. evamukto mahātejā rāvaṇo rākṣaseśvaraḥ ,
ājaghānānilasutaṃ talenorasi vīryavān.

58. Thus addressed, the immensely energetic Rāvaṇa, lord of the Rākṣasas, mighty as he was, struck the son of Vāyu (Hanuman) on the chest with his palm.
स तलाभिहतस्तेन चचाल च मुहुर्मुहुः ।
आजघानाभिसंक्रुद्धस्तलेनैवामरद्विषम् ॥५९॥
59. sa talābhihatastena cacāla ca muhurmuhuḥ ,
ājaghānābhisaṃkruddhastalenaivāmaradviṣam.

ājaghāna abhi-saṃkruddhaḥ talena eva amara-dviṣam

59. Struck by him (Rāvaṇa) with a palm, he (Hanuman) swayed repeatedly. Then, greatly enraged, he struck the enemy of the gods (Rāvaṇa) with his own palm.
ततस्तलेनाभिहतो वानरेण महात्मना ।
दशग्रीवः समाधूतो यथा भूमिचले ऽचलः ॥६०॥
60. tatastalenābhihato vānareṇa mahātmanā ,
daśagrīvaḥ samādhūto yathā bhūmicale'calaḥ.
60. tataḥ talena abhihataḥ vāṇareṇa mahā-ātmanā
daśa-grīvaḥ samā-dhūtaḥ yathā bhūmi-cale acalaḥ

60. Then, struck by the great-souled (mahā-ātman) monkey (Hanuman) with his palm, Daśagrīva (Rāvaṇa) was completely shaken, just like a mountain during an earthquake.
संग्रामे तं तथा दृष्ट्व रावणं तलताडितम् ।
ऋषयो वानराः सिद्धा नेदुर्देवाः सहासुराः ॥६१॥
61. saṃgrāme taṃ tathā dṛṣṭva rāvaṇaṃ talatāḍitam ,
ṛṣayo vānarāḥ siddhā nedurdevāḥ sahāsurāḥ.
61. saṃgrāme tam tathā dṛṣṭvā rāvaṇam tala-tāḍitam
ṛṣayaḥ vāṇarāḥ siddhāḥ neduḥ devāḥ saha-asurāḥ

61. Upon seeing Rāvaṇa, thus struck by the palm in battle, the sages, Vanaras, Siddhas, gods, and even Asuras, roared.
अथाश्वस्य महातेजा रावणो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
साधु वानरवीर्येण श्लाघनीयो ऽसि मे रिपुः ॥६२॥
62. athāśvasya mahātejā rāvaṇo vākyamabravīt ,
sādhu vānaravīryeṇa ślāghanīyo'si me ripuḥ.
62. atha āśvasya mahātejāḥ rāvaṇaḥ vākyam abravīt
sādhu vānaravīryeṇa ślāghanīyaḥ asi me ripuḥ

62. Then, the greatly effulgent Ravana, having recovered, spoke these words: "Excellent! You are an enemy praiseworthy for your monkey-like valor."
रावणेनैवमुक्तस्तु मारुतिर्वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
धिगस्तु मम वीर्यं तु यत्त्वं जीवसि रावण ॥६३॥
63. rāvaṇenaivamuktastu mārutirvākyamabravīt ,
dhigastu mama vīryaṃ tu yattvaṃ jīvasi rāvaṇa.
63. rāvaṇena eva uktaḥ tu mārutiḥ vākyam abravīt
dhik astu mama vīryam tu yat tvam jīvasi rāvaṇa

63. But Hanuman, thus addressed by Ravana, spoke these words: "Indeed, shame upon my valor, O Ravana, that you are still alive!"
सकृत्तु प्रहरेदानीं दुर्बुद्धे किं विकत्थसे ।
ततस्त्वां मामको मुष्टिर्नयिष्यामि यथाक्षयम् ।
ततो मारुतिवाक्येन क्रोधस्तस्य तदाज्वलत् ॥६४॥
64. sakṛttu praharedānīṃ durbuddhe kiṃ vikatthase ,
tatastvāṃ māmako muṣṭirnayiṣyāmi yathākṣayam ,
tato mārutivākyena krodhastasya tadājvalat.
64. sakṛt tu prahara idānīm durbuddhe kim
vikatthase tataḥ tvām māmakaḥ muṣṭiḥ
nayiṣyāmi yathā akṣayam tataḥ
mārutivākyena krodhaḥ tasya tadā ajvalat
64. he durbuddhe sakṛt tu idānīm prahara
kim vikatthase tataḥ mama māmakaḥ muṣṭiḥ
tvām yathā akṣayam nayiṣyāmi tataḥ
mārutivākyena tasya krodhaḥ tadā ajvalat
64. Now strike just once, O evil-minded one! Why do you boast? Then I will send you to endless destruction with my fist. Then, by these words of Hanuman, his (Ravana's) anger blazed up.
संरक्तनयनो यत्नान्मुष्टिमुद्यम्य दक्षिणम् ।
पातयामास वेगेन वानरोरसि वीर्यवान् ।
हनूमान् वक्षसि व्यूधे संचचाल हतः पुनः ॥६५॥
65. saṃraktanayano yatnānmuṣṭimudyamya dakṣiṇam ,
pātayāmāsa vegena vānarorasi vīryavān ,
hanūmān vakṣasi vyūdhe saṃcacāla hataḥ punaḥ.
65. saṃraktanayanaḥ yatnāt muṣṭim
udyamya dakṣiṇam pātayāmāsa vegena
vānara urasi vīryavān hanūmān

65. The powerful (Ravana), with blood-red eyes, lifting his right fist with effort, struck the monkey's chest with great force. Hanuman was struck on the chest, reeled, and again was hit.
विह्वलं तं तदा दृष्ट्वा हनूमन्तं महाबलम् ।
रथेनातिरथः शीघ्रं नीलं प्रति समभ्यगात् ॥६६॥
66. vihvalaṃ taṃ tadā dṛṣṭvā hanūmantaṃ mahābalam ,
rathenātirathaḥ śīghraṃ nīlaṃ prati samabhyagāt.
66. vihvalam tam tadā dṛṣṭvā hanūmantam mahābalam
rathena atirathaḥ śīghram nīlam prati samabhyagāt

66. Having seen that mighty Hanūmān distressed at that moment, the great warrior quickly advanced in his chariot towards Nīla.
पन्नगप्रतिमैर्भीमैः परमर्मातिभेदिभिः ।
शरैरादीपयामास नीलं हरिचमूपतिम् ॥६७॥
67. pannagapratimairbhīmaiḥ paramarmātibhedibhiḥ ,
śarairādīpayāmāsa nīlaṃ haricamūpatim.

67. With terrifying arrows, which resembled snakes and deeply pierced vital spots, he set ablaze Nīla, the commander of the monkey army.
स शरौघसमायस्तो नीलः कपिचमूपतिः ।
करेणैकेन शैलाग्रं रक्षोऽधिपतये ऽसृजत् ॥६८॥
68. sa śaraughasamāyasto nīlaḥ kapicamūpatiḥ ,
kareṇaikena śailāgraṃ rakṣo'dhipataye'sṛjat.

kareṇa ekena śailāgram rakṣaḥ adhipataye asṛjat

68. That Nīla, the commander of the monkey army, overwhelmed by the volley of arrows, hurled a mountain peak with one hand at the lord of the (rākṣasa)s.
हनूमानपि तेजस्वी समाश्वस्तो महामनाः ।
विप्रेक्षमाणो युद्धेप्सुः सरोषमिदमब्रवीत् ॥६९॥
69. hanūmānapi tejasvī samāśvasto mahāmanāḥ ,
viprekṣamāṇo yuddhepsuḥ saroṣamidamabravīt.

69. Hanūmān, who was also spirited, recovered, and magnanimous, looking around and eager for battle, spoke these words angrily.
नीलेन सह संयुक्तं रावणं राक्षसेश्वरम् ।
अन्येन युध्यमानस्य न युक्तमभिधावनम् ॥७०॥
70. nīlena saha saṃyuktaṃ rāvaṇaṃ rākṣaseśvaram ,
anyena yudhyamānasya na yuktamabhidhāvanam.

70. It is not appropriate to rush (to attack) Rāvaṇa, the lord of "rākṣasas", who is engaged in combat with Nīla, as it is improper to attack someone who is already fighting with another.
रावणो ऽपि महातेजास्तच्छृङ्गं सप्तभिः शरैः ।
आजघान सुतीक्ष्णाग्रैस्तद्विकीर्णं पपात ह ॥७१॥
71. rāvaṇo'pi mahātejāstacchṛṅgaṃ saptabhiḥ śaraiḥ ,
ājaghāna sutīkṣṇāgraistadvikīrṇaṃ papāta ha.
71. rāvaṇaḥ api mahātejāḥ tat śṛṅgam saptabhiḥ śaraiḥ
ājaghāna sutīkṣṇāgraiḥ tat vikīrṇam papāta ha

71. Rāvaṇa, of great splendor, also struck that peak with seven very sharp-pointed arrows. That shattered peak indeed fell down.
तद्विकीर्णं गिरेः शृङ्गं दृष्ट्वा हरिचमूपतिः ।
कालाग्निरिव जज्वाल क्रोधेन परवीरहा ॥७२॥
72. tadvikīrṇaṃ gireḥ śṛṅgaṃ dṛṣṭvā haricamūpatiḥ ,
kālāgniriva jajvāla krodhena paravīrahā.
72. tat vikīrṇam gireḥ śṛṅgam dṛṣṭvā haricamūpatiḥ
kālāgniḥ iva jajjvāla krodhena paravīrahā
72. haricamūpatiḥ paravīrahā tat vikīrṇam gireḥ śṛṅgam dṛṣṭvā,

72. Having seen that shattered mountain peak, the lord of the monkey army, the destroyer of enemy heroes, blazed with anger like the fire of universal destruction.
सो ऽश्वकर्णान्धवान् सालांश्चूतांश्चापि सुपुष्पितान् ।
अन्यांश्च विविधान् वृक्षान्नीलश्चिक्षेप संयुगे ॥७३॥
73. so'śvakarṇāndhavān sālāṃścūtāṃścāpi supuṣpitān ,
anyāṃśca vividhān vṛkṣānnīlaścikṣepa saṃyuge.

anyān ca vividhān vṛkṣān nīlaḥ cikṣepa saṃyuge

73. That Nīla, in battle, threw Ashvakarna trees, Dhava trees, Sala trees, and also mango trees in full bloom, along with other various trees.
स तान् वृक्षान् समासाद्य प्रतिचिच्छेद रावणः ।
अभ्यवर्षत् सुघोरेण शरवर्षेण पावकिम् ॥७४॥
74. sa tān vṛkṣān samāsādya praticiccheda rāvaṇaḥ ,
abhyavarṣat sughoreṇa śaravarṣeṇa pāvakim.

74. Ravana, having approached those trees, cut them down. Then, he showered the son of Pāvaka with a very dreadful rain of arrows.
अभिवृष्टः शरौघेण मेघेनेव महाचलः ।
ह्रस्वं कृत्वा तदा रूपं ध्वजाग्रे निपपात ह ॥७५॥
75. abhivṛṣṭaḥ śaraugheṇa megheneva mahācalaḥ ,
hrasvaṃ kṛtvā tadā rūpaṃ dhvajāgre nipapāta ha.

75. Like a great mountain showered by a cloud, he (Hanuman) was struck by a multitude of arrows. Then, making his form small, he alighted on the tip of the banner.
पावकात्मजमालोक्य ध्वजाग्रे समवस्थितम् ।
जज्वाल रावणः क्रोधात्ततो नीलो ननाद ह ॥७६॥

76. Seeing the son of Pāvaka (Hanuman) situated on the tip of the banner, Ravana blazed with anger. Thereupon, Nīla roared.
ध्वजाग्रे धनुषश्चाग्रे किरीटाग्रे च तं हरिम् ।
लक्ष्मणो ऽथ हनूमांश्च दृष्ट्वा रामश्च विस्मिताः ॥७७॥
77. dhvajāgre dhanuṣaścāgre kirīṭāgre ca taṃ harim ,
lakṣmaṇo'tha hanūmāṃśca dṛṣṭvā rāmaśca vismitāḥ.

77. Seeing that monkey (Hanuman) on the tip of the banner, and on the tip of the bow, and on the tip of the crown, Lakshmana, then Hanuman, and Rama were astonished.
रावणो ऽपि महातेजाः कपिलाघवविस्मितः ।
अस्त्रमाहारयामास दीप्तमाग्नेयमद्भुतम् ॥७८॥
78. rāvaṇo'pi mahātejāḥ kapilāghavavismitaḥ ,
astramāhārayāmāsa dīptamāgneyamadbhutam.

78. Rāvaṇa, though very mighty, was astonished by the monkey's swiftness. He then summoned forth a blazing, extraordinary āgneya weapon.
ततस्ते चुक्रुशुर्हृष्टा लब्धलक्ष्याः प्लवंगमाः ।
नीललाघवसंभ्रान्तं दृष्ट्वा रावणमाहवे ॥७९॥
79. tataste cukruśurhṛṣṭā labdhalakṣyāḥ plavaṃgamāḥ ,
nīlalāghavasaṃbhrāntaṃ dṛṣṭvā rāvaṇamāhave.

79. Having seen Rāvaṇa bewildered by Nīla's swiftness in battle, the successful and joyful monkeys then cried out.
वानराणां च नादेन संरब्धो रावणस्तदा ।
संभ्रमाविष्टहृदयो न किं चित् प्रत्यपद्यत ॥८०॥
80. vānarāṇāṃ ca nādena saṃrabdho rāvaṇastadā ,
saṃbhramāviṣṭahṛdayo na kiṃ cit pratyapadyata.
80. vānarāṇām ca nādena saṃrabdhaḥ rāvaṇaḥ tadā
saṃbhrama-āviṣṭa-hṛdayaḥ na kim cit pratyapadyata

80. And then Rāvaṇa, enraged by the sound of the monkeys and with his heart filled with agitation, could not comprehend anything.
आग्नेयेनाथ संयुक्तं गृहीत्वा रावणः शरम् ।
ध्वजशीर्षस्थितं नीलमुदैक्षत निशाचरः ॥८१॥
81. āgneyenātha saṃyuktaṃ gṛhītvā rāvaṇaḥ śaram ,
dhvajaśīrṣasthitaṃ nīlamudaikṣata niśācaraḥ.

81. Then Rāvaṇa, the night-wanderer, taking an arrow imbued with the āgneya power, looked up at Nīla, who was standing on the top of the banner.
ततो ऽब्रवीन्महातेजा रावणो राक्षसेश्वरः ।
कपे लाघवयुक्तो ऽसि मायया परयानया ॥८२॥
82. tato'bravīnmahātejā rāvaṇo rākṣaseśvaraḥ ,
kape lāghavayukto'si māyayā parayānayā.

82. Then Rāvaṇa, the greatly effulgent lord of rākṣasas, spoke: "O monkey, you are endowed with agility by means of this supreme illusion (māyā)."
जीवितं खलु रक्षस्व यदि शक्नोषि वानर ।
तानि तान्यात्मरूपाणि सृजसे त्वमनेकशः ॥८३॥
83. jīvitaṃ khalu rakṣasva yadi śaknoṣi vānara ,
tāni tānyātmarūpāṇi sṛjase tvamanekaśaḥ.

83. Indeed, save your life, O monkey, if you can! You manifest various forms of your own being (ātman) repeatedly.
तथापि त्वां मया मुक्तः सायको ऽस्त्रप्रयोजितः ।
जीवितं परिरक्षन्तं जीविताद्भ्रंशयिष्यति ॥८४॥
84. tathāpi tvāṃ mayā muktaḥ sāyako'straprayojitaḥ ,
jīvitaṃ parirakṣantaṃ jīvitādbhraṃśayiṣyati.

84. Nevertheless, an arrow released by me, imbued with a divine weapon (astra), will deprive you of life, even though you try to protect it.
एवमुक्त्वा महाबाहू रावणो राक्षसेश्वरः ।
संधाय बाणमस्त्रेण चमूपतिमताडयत् ॥८५॥
85. evamuktvā mahābāhū rāvaṇo rākṣaseśvaraḥ ,
saṃdhāya bāṇamastreṇa camūpatimatāḍayat.

85. Having spoken thus, Rāvaṇa, the mighty-armed lord of rākṣasas, set an arrow with a divine weapon (astra) and struck the army commander.
सो ऽस्त्रयुक्तेन बाणेन नीलो वक्षसि ताडितः ।
निर्दह्यमानः सहसा निपपात महीतले ॥८६॥
86. so'strayuktena bāṇena nīlo vakṣasi tāḍitaḥ ,
nirdahyamānaḥ sahasā nipapāta mahītale.

86. Nīla was struck in the chest by a weapon-imbued arrow. Suddenly, being scorched, he fell to the ground.
पितृमाहात्म्य संयोगादात्मनश्चापि तेजसा ।
जानुभ्यामपतद्भूमौ न च प्राणैर्व्ययुज्यत ॥८७॥
87. pitṛmāhātmya saṃyogādātmanaścāpi tejasā ,
jānubhyāmapatadbhūmau na ca prāṇairvyayujyata.

87. Due to the combination of his father's greatness and also his own brilliance (tejas), he fell to the ground on his knees, but he was not deprived of his life (prāṇa).
विसंज्ञं वानरं दृष्ट्वा दशग्रीवो रणोत्सुकः ।
रथेनाम्बुदनादेन सौमित्रिमभिदुद्रुवे ॥८८॥
88. visaṃjñaṃ vānaraṃ dṛṣṭvā daśagrīvo raṇotsukaḥ ,
rathenāmbudanādena saumitrimabhidudruve.

88. Seeing the unconscious monkey, Daśagrīva (Rāvaṇa), eager for battle, rushed towards Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa) with his chariot, which roared like a thundercloud.
तमाह सौमित्रिरदीनसत्त्वो विस्फारयन्तं धनुरप्रमेयम् ।
अन्वेहि मामेव निशाचरेन्द्र न वानरांस्त्वं प्रति योद्धुमर्हसि ॥८९॥
89. tamāha saumitriradīnasattvo visphārayantaṃ dhanuraprameyam ,
anvehi māmeva niśācarendra na vānarāṃstvaṃ prati yoddhumarhasi.

89. Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa), whose spirit was not humble, said to him (Rāvaṇa), who was stretching his immeasurable bow: "O lord of the night-prowlers (Rākṣasas), come after me alone! You are not fit to fight against mere monkeys."
स तस्य वाक्यं परिपूर्णघोषं ज्याशब्दमुग्रं च निशम्य राजा ।
आसाद्य सौमित्रिमवस्थितं तं कोपान्वितं वाक्यमुवाच रक्षः ॥९०॥
90. sa tasya vākyaṃ paripūrṇaghoṣaṃ jyāśabdamugraṃ ca niśamya rājā ,
āsādya saumitrimavasthitaṃ taṃ kopānvitaṃ vākyamuvāca rakṣaḥ.

90. Having heard Lakshmana's reverberating words and the fierce twang of his bowstring, the demon king (Ravana) approached Lakshmana, who stood firm, and spoke words filled with anger.
दिष्ट्यासि मे राघव दृष्टिमार्गं प्राप्तो ऽन्तगामी विपरीतबुद्धिः ।
अस्मिन् क्षणे यास्यसि मृत्युदेशं संसाद्यमानो मम बाणजालैः ॥९१॥
91. diṣṭyāsi me rāghava dṛṣṭimārgaṃ prāpto'ntagāmī viparītabuddhiḥ ,
asmin kṣaṇe yāsyasi mṛtyudeśaṃ saṃsādyamāno mama bāṇajālaiḥ.

91. Fortunately, O Raghava, you, with your perverse intellect and destined for death, have come within my sight. At this very moment, you will go to the realm of death, struck down by my volley of arrows.
तमाह सौमित्रिरविस्मयानो गर्जन्तमुद्वृत्तसिताग्रदंष्ट्रम् ।
राजन्न गर्जन्ति महाप्रभावा विकत्थसे पापकृतां वरिष्ठ ॥९२॥
92. tamāha saumitriravismayāno garjantamudvṛttasitāgradaṃṣṭram ,
rājanna garjanti mahāprabhāvā vikatthase pāpakṛtāṃ variṣṭha.

92. Lakshmana, unperturbed, said to Ravana, who was roaring with uplifted, white, sharp fangs: "O King, those of great power do not roar. You merely boast, O foremost among evildoers!"
जानामि वीर्यं तव राक्षसेन्द्र बलं प्रतापं च पराक्रमं च ।
अवस्थितो ऽहं शरचापपाणिरागच्छ किं मोघविकत्थनेन ॥९३॥
93. jānāmi vīryaṃ tava rākṣasendra balaṃ pratāpaṃ ca parākramaṃ ca ,
avasthito'haṃ śaracāpapāṇirāgaccha kiṃ moghavikatthanena.

93. O King of demons, I am aware of your valor, might, prowess, and courage. I stand here, bow and arrow in hand. Come forward! What is the use of this futile boasting?
स एवमुक्तः कुपितः ससर्ज रक्षोऽधिपः सप्तशरान् सुपुङ्खान् ।
तांल् लक्ष्मणः काञ्चनचित्रपुङ्खैश्चिच्छेद बाणैर्निशिताग्रधारैः ॥९४॥
94. sa evamuktaḥ kupitaḥ sasarja rakṣo'dhipaḥ saptaśarān supuṅkhān ,
tāṃl lakṣmaṇaḥ kāñcanacitrapuṅkhaiściccheda bāṇairniśitāgradhāraiḥ.

94. Thus addressed, the enraged lord of the rākṣasas released seven well-feathered arrows. Lakshmana, in turn, intercepted those with his own arrows, which had golden, variegated feathers and sharp, pointed tips.
तान्प्रेक्षमाणः सहसा निकृत्तान्निकृत्तभोगानिव पन्नगेन्द्रान् ।
लङ्केश्वरः क्रोधवशं जगाम ससर्ज चान्यान्निशितान्पृषत्कान् ॥९५॥
95. tānprekṣamāṇaḥ sahasā nikṛttānnikṛttabhogāniva pannagendrān ,
laṅkeśvaraḥ krodhavaśaṃ jagāma sasarja cānyānniśitānpṛṣatkān.

95. Seeing those arrows suddenly cut down, like great serpent-kings (pannagendrān) with their bodies severed, the lord of Laṅkā succumbed to the power of anger (krodhavaśam) and released other sharp arrows.
स बाणवर्षं तु ववर्ष तीव्रं रामानुजः कार्मुकसंप्रयुक्तम् ।
क्षुरार्धचन्द्रोत्तमकर्णिभल्लैः शरांश्च चिच्छेद न चुक्षुभे च ॥९६॥
96. sa bāṇavarṣaṃ tu vavarṣa tīvraṃ rāmānujaḥ kārmukasaṃprayuktam ,
kṣurārdhacandrottamakarṇibhallaiḥ śarāṃśca ciccheda na cukṣubhe ca.

96. Rāma's younger brother (Rāmānujaḥ), Lakshmana, then rained down an intense shower of arrows discharged from his bow. With razor-sharp, half-moon-tipped, barbed, and broad-headed arrows (kṣura-ardhacandra-uttama-karṇi-bhallaiḥ), he cut off [the enemy's] arrows and was not disturbed at all.
स लक्ष्मणश्चाशु शराञ् शिताग्रान्महेन्द्रवज्राशनितुल्यवेगान् ।
संधाय चापे ज्वलनप्रकाशान् ससर्ज रक्षोऽधिपतेर्वधाय ॥९७॥
97. sa lakṣmaṇaścāśu śarāñ śitāgrānmahendravajrāśanitulyavegān ,
saṃdhāya cāpe jvalanaprakāśān sasarja rakṣo'dhipatervadhāya.

97. And Lakshmana, quickly fixing onto his bow sharp-tipped arrows that were as swift as Indra's thunderbolt and shone like fire, released them for the slaying of the lord of the rākṣasas.
स तान्प्रचिच्छेद हि राक्षसेन्द्रश्छित्त्वा च तांल् लक्ष्मणमाजघान ।
शरेण कालाग्निसमप्रभेण स्वयम्भुदत्तेन ललाटदेशे ॥९८॥
98. sa tānpraciccheda hi rākṣasendraśchittvā ca tāṃl lakṣmaṇamājaghāna ,
śareṇa kālāgnisamaprabheṇa svayambhudattena lalāṭadeśe.

98. Indeed, the lord of the rākṣasas (Ravana) cut down those (arrows). Then, having severed them, he struck Lakshmana on the forehead with an arrow, which shone like the fire of destruction and had been granted by Svayambhū (Brahma).
स लक्ष्मणो रावणसायकार्तश्चचाल चापं शिथिलं प्रगृह्य ।
पुनश्च संज्ञां प्रतिलभ्य कृच्छ्राच्चिच्छेद चापं त्रिदशेन्द्रशत्रोः ॥९९॥
99. sa lakṣmaṇo rāvaṇasāyakārtaścacāla cāpaṃ śithilaṃ pragṛhya ,
punaśca saṃjñāṃ pratilabhya kṛcchrācciccheda cāpaṃ tridaśendraśatroḥ.

99. That Lakshmana, pained by Ravana's arrow, swayed, loosely holding his bow. Then, having regained consciousness with difficulty, he again cut the bow of the enemy of the lord of the gods (Ravana).
निकृत्तचापं त्रिभिराजघान बाणैस्तदा दाशरथिः शिताग्रैः ।
स सायकार्तो विचचाल राजा कृच्छ्राच्च संज्ञां पुनराससाद ॥१००॥
100. nikṛttacāpaṃ tribhirājaghāna bāṇaistadā dāśarathiḥ śitāgraiḥ ,
sa sāyakārto vicacāla rājā kṛcchrācca saṃjñāṃ punarāsasāda.

100. Then, the son of Daśaratha (Rama) struck him, whose bow had been severed, with three sharp-tipped arrows. That king (Ravana), afflicted by the arrows, swayed. Then, with difficulty, he again recovered his consciousness.
स कृत्तचापः शरताडितश्च स्वेदार्द्रगात्रो रुधिरावसिक्तः ।
जग्राह शक्तिं समुदग्रशक्तिः स्वयम्भुदत्तां युधि देवशत्रुः ॥१०१॥
101. sa kṛttacāpaḥ śaratāḍitaśca svedārdragātro rudhirāvasiktaḥ ,
jagrāha śaktiṃ samudagraśaktiḥ svayambhudattāṃ yudhi devaśatruḥ.

101. He (Ravana), whose bow was cut, who was struck by arrows, whose body was wet with sweat, and who was drenched in blood, that enemy of the gods (Ravana), possessed of immense power (śakti), seized the missile (śakti) granted by Svayambhū (Brahma) in battle.
स तां विधूमानलसंनिकाशां वित्रासनीं वानरवाहिनीनाम् ।
चिक्षेप शक्तिं तरसा ज्वलन्तीं सौमित्रये राक्षसराष्ट्रनाथः ॥१०२॥
102. sa tāṃ vidhūmānalasaṃnikāśāṃ vitrāsanīṃ vānaravāhinīnām ,
cikṣepa śaktiṃ tarasā jvalantīṃ saumitraye rākṣasarāṣṭranāthaḥ.

102. The lord of the demon kingdom swiftly hurled that blazing spear (śakti), which resembled a smokeless fire and was terrifying to the monkey armies, towards Saumitri.
तामापतन्तीं भरतानुजो ऽस्त्रैर्जघान बाणैश्च हुताग्निकल्पैः ।
तथापि सा तस्य विवेश शक्तिर्भुजान्तरं दाशरथेर्विशालम् ॥१०३॥
103. tāmāpatantīṃ bharatānujo'strairjaghāna bāṇaiśca hutāgnikalpaiḥ ,
tathāpi sā tasya viveśa śaktirbhujāntaraṃ dāśaratherviśālam.

103. Lakshmana, Bharata's younger brother, struck that approaching spear with weapons and arrows resembling consecrated fire. Nevertheless, that spear (śakti) entered the broad chest of Dasharatha's son.
शक्त्या ब्राम्या तु सौमित्रिस्ताडितस्तु स्तनान्तरे ।
विष्णोरचिन्त्यं स्वं भागमात्मानं प्रत्यनुस्मरत् ॥१०४॥
104. śaktyā brāmyā tu saumitristāḍitastu stanāntare ,
viṣṇoracintyaṃ svaṃ bhāgamātmānaṃ pratyanusmarat.

104. Struck in the chest by the divine spear (śakti), Saumitri, however, remembered his own inconceivable true nature (ātman), a part of Viṣṇu.
ततो दानवदर्पघ्नं सौमित्रिं देवकण्टकः ।
तं पीडयित्वा बाहुभ्यामप्रभुर्लङ्घने ऽभवत् ॥१०५॥
105. tato dānavadarpaghnaṃ saumitriṃ devakaṇṭakaḥ ,
taṃ pīḍayitvā bāhubhyāmaprabhurlaṅghane'bhavat.

105. Thereupon, the thorn of the gods (Ravana), having crushed Saumitri, the vanquisher of the demons' pride, with his two arms, became unable to overcome him.
हिमवान्मन्दरो मेरुस्त्रैलोक्यं वा सहामरैः ।
शक्यं भुजाभ्यामुद्धर्तुं न संख्ये भरतानुजः ॥१०६॥
106. himavānmandaro merustrailokyaṃ vā sahāmaraiḥ ,
śakyaṃ bhujābhyāmuddhartuṃ na saṃkhye bharatānujaḥ.
106. himavān mandaraḥ meruḥ trailokyam vā saha amaraiḥ
śakyam bhujābhyām uddhartum na saṃkhye bharatānujaḥ

106. The Himālaya, Mandara, or Meru mountains, or even the three worlds together with the gods, can be lifted by (his) two arms. But Bharata's younger brother (Lakshmana) is not conquerable in battle.
अथैनं वैष्णवं भागं मानुषं देहमास्थितम् ।
विसंज्ञं लक्ष्मणं दृष्ट्वा रावणो विस्मितो ऽभवत् ॥१०७॥
107. athainaṃ vaiṣṇavaṃ bhāgaṃ mānuṣaṃ dehamāsthitam ,
visaṃjñaṃ lakṣmaṇaṃ dṛṣṭvā rāvaṇo vismito'bhavat.

107. Then, seeing Lakshmana – who, though a divine (vaiṣṇavam) part of Viṣṇu, had assumed a human body and was now lying unconscious – Rāvaṇa became astonished.
अथ वायुसुतः क्रुद्धो रावणं समभिद्रवत् ।
आजघानोरसि क्रुद्धो वज्रकल्पेन मुष्टिना ॥१०८॥
108. atha vāyusutaḥ kruddho rāvaṇaṃ samabhidravat ,
ājaghānorasi kruddho vajrakalpena muṣṭinā.

108. Then the son of Vāyu (Hanuman), enraged, rushed towards Rāvaṇa. Full of wrath, he struck him on the chest with a fist that was like a thunderbolt.
तेन मुष्टिप्रहारेण रावणो राक्षसेश्वरः ।
जानुभ्यामपतद्भूमौ चचाल च पपात च ॥१०९॥
109. tena muṣṭiprahāreṇa rāvaṇo rākṣaseśvaraḥ ,
jānubhyāmapatadbhūmau cacāla ca papāta ca.

109. Due to that fist-strike, Rāvaṇa, the lord of the Rākṣasas, fell to the ground on his knees. He staggered and then collapsed.
विसंज्ञं रावणं दृष्ट्वा समरे भीमविक्रमम् ।
ऋषयो वानराश्चैव नेदुर्देवाः सवासवाः ॥११०॥
110. visaṃjñaṃ rāvaṇaṃ dṛṣṭvā samare bhīmavikramam ,
ṛṣayo vānarāścaiva nedurdevāḥ savāsavāḥ.
110. visañjñam rāvaṇam dṛṣṭvā samare bhīmavikramam
ṛṣayaḥ vānarāḥ ca eva neduḥ devāḥ sa-vāsavāḥ

110. Upon seeing Rāvaṇa, who had terrible valor in battle, rendered unconscious, the sages and monkeys, as well as the gods with Indra, cheered loudly.
हनूमानपि तेजस्वी लक्ष्मणं रावणार्दितम् ।
अनयद् राघवाभ्याशं बाहुभ्यां परिगृह्य तम् ॥१११॥
111. hanūmānapi tejasvī lakṣmaṇaṃ rāvaṇārditam ,
anayad rāghavābhyāśaṃ bāhubhyāṃ parigṛhya tam.

111. The mighty Hanumān, taking Lakṣmaṇa, who had been tormented by Rāvaṇa, in his arms, brought him near Rāghava (Rāma).
वायुसूनोः सुहृत्त्वेन भक्त्या परमया च सः ।
शत्रूणामप्रकम्प्यो ऽपि लघुत्वमगमत् कपेः ॥११२॥
112. vāyusūnoḥ suhṛttvena bhaktyā paramayā ca saḥ ,
śatrūṇāmaprakampyo'pi laghutvamagamat kapeḥ.

112. Due to the friendship of the son of Vāyu (Hanumān) and his supreme devotion (bhakti), Lakṣmaṇa, though unshakable by foes, became light for the monkey (Hanumān).
तं समुत्सृज्य सा शक्तिः सौमित्रिं युधि दुर्जयम् ।
रावणस्य रथे तस्मिन् स्थानं पुनरुपागमत् ॥११३॥
113. taṃ samutsṛjya sā śaktiḥ saumitriṃ yudhi durjayam ,
rāvaṇasya rathe tasmin sthānaṃ punarupāgamat.

113. Having left Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa), who was unconquerable in battle, that (śakti) weapon returned to its place in Rāvaṇa's chariot.
रावणो ऽपि महातेजाः प्राप्य संज्ञां महाहवे ।
आददे निशितान्बाणाञ्जग्राह च महद्धनुः ॥११४॥
114. rāvaṇo'pi mahātejāḥ prāpya saṃjñāṃ mahāhave ,
ādade niśitānbāṇāñjagrāha ca mahaddhanuḥ.
114. rāvaṇaḥ api mahātejāḥ prāpya saṃjñām mahāhave
| ādade niśitān bāṇān jagrāha ca mahat dhanuḥ
114. Even Rāvaṇa, of great splendor, regaining consciousness in the great battle, took sharp arrows and seized a mighty bow.
आश्वस्तश्च विशल्यश्च लक्ष्मणः शत्रुसूदनः ।
विष्णोर्भागममीमांस्यमात्मानं प्रत्यनुस्मरन् ॥११५॥
115. āśvastaśca viśalyaśca lakṣmaṇaḥ śatrusūdanaḥ ,
viṣṇorbhāgamamīmāṃsyamātmānaṃ pratyanusmaran.

115. Lakṣmaṇa, the destroyer of enemies, comforted and freed from arrows, recollected his true self (ātman) as an incomprehensible part of Viṣṇu.
निपातितमहावीरां वानराणां महाचमूम् ।
राघवस्तु रणे दृष्ट्वा रावणं समभिद्रवत् ॥११६॥
116. nipātitamahāvīrāṃ vānarāṇāṃ mahācamūm ,
rāghavastu raṇe dṛṣṭvā rāvaṇaṃ samabhidravat.
116. nipātitamahāvīrām vānarāṇām mahācamūm |
rāghavaḥ tu raṇe dṛṣṭvā rāvaṇam samabhidravat
116. But Rāma (Rāghava), seeing the great army of monkeys whose mighty heroes had been struck down in battle, rushed towards Rāvaṇa.
अथैनमुपसंगम्य हनूमान् वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
मम पृष्ठं समारुह्य रक्षसं शास्तुमर्हसि ॥११७॥
117. athainamupasaṃgamya hanūmān vākyamabravīt ,
mama pṛṣṭhaṃ samāruhya rakṣasaṃ śāstumarhasi.
117. atha enam upasaṅgamya hanūmān vākyam abravīt |
mama pṛṣṭham samāruhya rakṣasam śāstum arhasi
117. Then Hanumān, approaching him, spoke these words: "You ought to ascend my back and control the demon."
तच्छ्रुत्वा राघवो वाक्यं वायुपुत्रेण भाषितम् ।
आरोहत् सहसा शूरो हनूमन्तं महाकपिम् ।
रथस्थं रावणं संख्ये ददर्श मनुजाधिपः ॥११८॥
118. tacchrutvā rāghavo vākyaṃ vāyuputreṇa bhāṣitam ,
ārohat sahasā śūro hanūmantaṃ mahākapim ,
rathasthaṃ rāvaṇaṃ saṃkhye dadarśa manujādhipaḥ.
118. tat śrutvā rāghavaḥ vākyam vāyuputreṇa
bhāṣitam ārohat sahasā śūraḥ
hanūmantam mahākapim rathastham
rāvaṇam saṅkhye dadarśa manujādhipaḥ

118. Hearing that speech spoken by the son of Vāyu (Hanumān), the heroic Rāghava (Rāma) suddenly mounted Hanumān, the great monkey. The lord of men (Rāma) then saw Rāvaṇa, who was standing in his chariot, on the battlefield.
तमालोक्य महातेजाः प्रदुद्राव स राघवः ।
वैरोचनमिव क्रुद्धो विष्णुरभ्युद्यतायुधः ॥११९॥
119. tamālokya mahātejāḥ pradudrāva sa rāghavaḥ ,
vairocanamiva kruddho viṣṇurabhyudyatāyudhaḥ.

vairocanam iva kruddhaḥ viṣṇuḥ abhyudyatāyudhaḥ

119. Seeing him, that greatly effulgent Rāghava (Rāma) rushed forward like an enraged Viṣṇu, with uplifted weapon, charging towards Vairochana (Bali).
ज्याशब्दमकरोत्तीव्रं वज्रनिष्पेषनिस्वनम् ।
गिरा गम्भीरया रामो राक्षसेन्द्रमुवाच ह ॥१२०॥
120. jyāśabdamakarottīvraṃ vajraniṣpeṣanisvanam ,
girā gambhīrayā rāmo rākṣasendramuvāca ha.

120. Rāma produced a fierce twang of his bowstring, a sound like the crash of a thunderbolt. With a deep voice, he then spoke to the king of the rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa).
तिष्ठ तिष्ठ मम त्वं हि कृत्वा विप्रियमीदृशम् ।
क्व नु राक्षसशार्दूल गतो मोक्षमवाप्स्यसि ॥१२१॥
121. tiṣṭha tiṣṭha mama tvaṃ hi kṛtvā vipriyamīdṛśam ,
kva nu rākṣasaśārdūla gato mokṣamavāpsyasi.
121. tiṣṭha tiṣṭha mama tvam hi kṛtvā vipriyam īdṛśam
kva nu rākṣasaśārdūla gataḥ mokṣam avāpsyasi

he rākṣasaśārdūla kva nu gataḥ mokṣam avāpsyasi?
121. "Stop, stop! You, having indeed committed such an offensive act against me, where, O tiger among the rākṣasas, will you find escape (mokṣa)?"
यदीन्द्रवैवस्वत भास्करान् वा स्वयम्भुवैश्वानरशंकरान् वा ।
गमिष्यसि त्वं दश वा दिशो वा तथापि मे नाद्य गतो विमोक्ष्यसे ॥१२२॥
122. yadīndravaivasvata bhāskarān vā svayambhuvaiśvānaraśaṃkarān vā ,
gamiṣyasi tvaṃ daśa vā diśo vā tathāpi me nādya gato vimokṣyase.

svayambhuvaiśvānaraśaṅkarān vā
gamiṣyasi tvam daśa vā diśaḥ vā tathā
api me na adya gataḥ vimokṣyase

122. Even if you go to Indra, Vivasvat, or Bhaskara, or to Svayambhu, Vaiśvānara, or Shankara, or flee to any of the ten directions, you will still not be released from me today.
यश्चैष शक्त्याभिहतस्त्वयाद्य इच्छन् विषादं सहसाभ्युपेतः ।
स एष रक्षोगणराज मृत्युः सपुत्रदारस्य तवाद्य युद्धे ॥१२३॥
123. yaścaiṣa śaktyābhihatastvayādya icchan viṣādaṃ sahasābhyupetaḥ ,
sa eṣa rakṣogaṇarāja mṛtyuḥ saputradārasya tavādya yuddhe.
123. yaḥ ca eṣaḥ śaktyā abhihataḥ tvayā
adya icchan viṣādam sahasā
abhyupetaḥ saḥ eṣaḥ rakṣogaṇarāja mṛtyuḥ

123. ca rakṣogaṇarāja yaḥ eṣaḥ tvayā
adya śaktyā abhihataḥ sahasā viṣādam
icchan abhyupetaḥ saḥ eṣaḥ adya
yuddhe saputradārasya tava mṛtyuḥ
123. And this one who was struck by your weapon (śakti) today and who suddenly succumbed to despair (viṣāda), this very one, O king of the host of rākṣasas, will be your death today in battle, along with your sons and wife.
राघवस्य वचः श्रुत्वा राक्षसेन्द्रो महाकपिम् ।
आजघान शरैस्तीक्ष्णैः कालानलशिखोपमैः ॥१२४॥
124. rāghavasya vacaḥ śrutvā rākṣasendro mahākapim ,
ājaghāna śaraistīkṣṇaiḥ kālānalaśikhopamaiḥ.

124. After hearing Rāghava's words, the king of the rākṣasas struck the great monkey (Hanumān) with sharp arrows, which resembled the flames of the destructive cosmic fire (kālānala).
राक्षसेनाहवे तस्य ताडितस्यापि सायकैः ।
स्वभावतेजोयुक्तस्य भूयस्तेजो व्यवर्धत ॥१२५॥
125. rākṣasenāhave tasya tāḍitasyāpi sāyakaiḥ ,
svabhāvatejoyuktasya bhūyastejo vyavardhata.

svabhāvatejoyuktasya bhūyaḥ tejaḥ vyavardhata

125. Even though he, endowed with natural brilliance (tejas), was struck by the rākṣasa with arrows in battle, his power further increased.
ततो रामो महातेजा रावणेन कृतव्रणम् ।
दृष्ट्वा प्लवगशार्दूलं क्रोधस्य वशमेयिवान् ॥१२६॥
126. tato rāmo mahātejā rāvaṇena kṛtavraṇam ,
dṛṣṭvā plavagaśārdūlaṃ krodhasya vaśameyivān.
126. tataḥ rāmaḥ mahātejāḥ rāvaṇena kṛtavraṇam
dṛṣṭvā plavagaśārdūlam krodhasya vaśam eyivān

126. Then, the greatly effulgent Rama, upon seeing the foremost of monkeys wounded by Ravana, became overcome with anger.
तस्याभिसंक्रम्य रथं सचक्रं साश्वध्वजच्छत्रमहापताकम् ।
ससारथिं साशनिशूलखड्गं रामः प्रचिच्छेद शरैः सुपुङ्खैः ॥१२७॥
127. tasyābhisaṃkramya rathaṃ sacakraṃ sāśvadhvajacchatramahāpatākam ,
sasārathiṃ sāśaniśūlakhaḍgaṃ rāmaḥ praciccheda śaraiḥ supuṅkhaiḥ.

127. Rama, having approached that chariot of his (Ravana's) – complete with its wheels, horses, banners, parasols, and grand standards, as well as its charioteer and its thunderbolt-like spears and swords – cut it to pieces with his well-feathered arrows.
अथेन्द्रशत्रुं तरसा जघान बाणेन वज्राशनिसंनिभेन ।
भुजान्तरे व्यूढसुजातरूपे वज्रेण मेरुं भगवानिवेन्द्रः ॥१२८॥
128. athendraśatruṃ tarasā jaghāna bāṇena vajrāśanisaṃnibhena ,

128. atha indraśatrum tarasā jaghāna bāṇena vajrāśanisaṃnibhena
bhujāntare vyūḍhasujātarūpe vajreṇa merum bhagavān iva indraḥ
128. atha vajrāśanisaṃnibhena bāṇena vyūḍhasujātarūpe bhujāntare indraśatrum tarasā jaghāna,
bhagavān indraḥ vajreṇa merum iva (jaghāna)
128. Then, with great force, he struck the enemy of Indra (Ravana) with an arrow like a thunderbolt and lightning, directly in his broad, well-formed chest, just as the glorious Indra strikes Mount Meru with his thunderbolt.
यो वज्रपाताशनिसंनिपातान्न चुक्षुभे नापि चचाल राजा ।
स रामबाणाभिहतो भृशार्तश्चचाल चापं च मुमोच वीरः ॥१२९॥
129. yo vajrapātāśanisaṃnipātānna cukṣubhe nāpi cacāla rājā ,
sa rāmabāṇābhihato bhṛśārtaścacāla cāpaṃ ca mumoca vīraḥ.

129. The king (Ravana), who had not trembled or even stirred from the impact of thunderbolts and lightning strikes, that hero, deeply afflicted after being struck by Rama's arrow, wavered and dropped his bow.
तं विह्वलन्तं प्रसमीक्ष्य रामः समाददे दीप्तमथार्धचन्द्रम् ।
तेनार्कवर्णं सहसा किरीटं चिच्छेद रक्षोऽधिपतेर्महात्माः ॥१३०॥
130. taṃ vihvalantaṃ prasamīkṣya rāmaḥ samādade dīptamathārdhacandram ,
tenārkavarṇaṃ sahasā kirīṭaṃ ciccheda rakṣo'dhipatermahātmāḥ.

130. Observing him staggering, the great-souled (mahātmā) Rama then took up a blazing, crescent-shaped arrow. With that, he swiftly cut off the sun-colored crown of the lord of the rākṣasas.
तं निर्विषाशीविषसंनिकाशं शान्तार्चिषं सूर्यमिवाप्रकाशम् ।
गतश्रियं कृत्तकिरीटकूटमुवाच रामो युधि राक्षसेन्द्रम् ॥१३१॥
131. taṃ nirviṣāśīviṣasaṃnikāśaṃ śāntārciṣaṃ sūryamivāprakāśam ,
gataśriyaṃ kṛttakirīṭakūṭamuvāca rāmo yudhi rākṣasendram.

131. Rama spoke in battle (yudhi) to him, who was like a sun without light, its rays extinguished, resembling a venom-less serpent, deprived of his splendor, and with his crown cut off.
कृतं त्वया कर्म महत् सुभीमं हतप्रवीरश्च कृतस्त्वयाहम् ।
तस्मात् परिश्रान्त इति व्यवस्य न त्वं शरैर्मृत्युवशं नयामि ॥१३२॥
132. kṛtaṃ tvayā karma mahat subhīmaṃ hatapravīraśca kṛtastvayāham ,
tasmāt pariśrānta iti vyavasya na tvaṃ śarairmṛtyuvaśaṃ nayāmi.

132. "You have performed a great and exceedingly dreadful deed (karma), and you have caused my valiant warriors to be slain. Therefore, judging you to be utterly exhausted, I will not bring you under the sway of death with my arrows now."
स एवमुक्तो हतदर्पहर्षो निकृत्तचापः स हताश्वसूतः ।
शरार्दितः कृत्तमहाकिरीटो विवेश लङ्कां सहसा स्म राजा ॥१३३॥
133. sa evamukto hatadarpaharṣo nikṛttacāpaḥ sa hatāśvasūtaḥ ,
śarārditaḥ kṛttamahākirīṭo viveśa laṅkāṃ sahasā sma rājā.

133. Thus addressed, that king - whose pride and joy were destroyed, whose bow was cut, whose horses and charioteer were slain, who was tormented by arrows, and whose magnificent crown had been severed - swiftly entered Laṅkā.

हरीन् विशल्यान् सहलक्ष्मणेन चकार रामः परमाहवाग्रे ॥१३४॥

134. When that exceedingly powerful lord of the rākṣasas, the enemy of both dānavas and devas, entered, Rāma, at the forefront of the great battle, made the monkeys and Lakṣmaṇa free from wounds.
तस्मिन्प्रभग्ने त्रिदशेन्द्रशत्रौ सुरासुरा भूतगणा दिशश्च ।
ससागराः सर्षिमहोरगाश्च तथैव भूम्यम्बुचराश्च हृष्टाः ॥१३५॥
135. tasminprabhagne tridaśendraśatrau surāsurā bhūtagaṇā diśaśca ,
sasāgarāḥ sarṣimahoragāśca tathaiva bhūmyambucarāśca hṛṣṭāḥ.

135. When that enemy of the lord of the thirty (gods) was completely vanquished, gods and asuras, hosts of beings, the directions, along with the oceans, sages and great serpents, and similarly, all creatures of land and water, were delighted.
