मेधावी तु ततो ध्यात्वा स किं चिदिदमुत्तमम् ।
लब्धसंज्ञस्ततस्तं तु वेदज्ञो नृपमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. medhāvī tu tato dhyātvā sa kiṃ cididamuttamam ,
labdhasaṃjñastatastaṃ tu vedajño nṛpamabravīt.

1. But then, having meditated (dhyāna) on this excellent matter, that wise one, having attained clear understanding, indeed spoke to that king, who was a knower of the Vedas.
इष्टिं ते ऽहं करिष्यामि पुत्रीयां पुत्रकारणात् ।
अथर्वशिरसि प्रोक्तैर्मन्त्रैः सिद्धां विधानतः ॥२॥
2. iṣṭiṃ te'haṃ kariṣyāmi putrīyāṃ putrakāraṇāt ,
atharvaśirasi proktairmantraiḥ siddhāṃ vidhānataḥ.
2. iṣṭim te aham kariṣyāmi putrīyām putrakāraṇāt
atharvaśirasi proktaiḥ mantraiḥ siddhām vidhānataḥ
2. aham te putrakāraṇāt putrīyām atharvaśirasi proktaiḥ
mantraiḥ siddhām iṣṭim vidhānataḥ kariṣyāmi
2. I will perform for you a sacrifice for the sake of obtaining sons, a rite made efficacious by the sacred formulas (mantra) prescribed in the Atharvaśiras, and performed according to the proper procedure.
ततः प्राक्रमदिष्टिं तां पुत्रीयां पुत्र कारणात् ।
जुहाव चाग्नौ तेजस्वी मन्त्रदृष्टेन कर्मणा ॥३॥
3. tataḥ prākramadiṣṭiṃ tāṃ putrīyāṃ putra kāraṇāt ,
juhāva cāgnau tejasvī mantradṛṣṭena karmaṇā.
3. tataḥ pra akramat iṣṭim tām putrīyām putra kāraṇāt
juhāva ca agnau tejasvī mantradṛṣṭena karmaṇā
3. tataḥ tejasvī putra kāraṇāt tām putrīyām iṣṭim
pra akramat ca agnau mantradṛṣṭena karmaṇā juhāva
3. Then, he commenced that son-giving sacrifice for the purpose of sons. And the brilliant one offered oblations into the fire with the ritual act (karma) as revealed by the sacred formulas (mantra).
ततो देवाः सगन्धर्वाः सिद्धाश्च परमर्षयः ।
भागप्रतिग्रहार्थं वै समवेता यथाविधि ॥४॥
4. tato devāḥ sagandharvāḥ siddhāśca paramarṣayaḥ ,
bhāgapratigrahārthaṃ vai samavetā yathāvidhi.
4. tataḥ devāḥ sagandharvāḥ siddhāḥ ca paramarṣayaḥ
bhāgapratigrahārthaṃ vai samavetāḥ yathāvidhi

4. Then, the gods, along with the Gandharvas, Siddhas, and great sages, indeed assembled in accordance with the prescribed rites to receive their shares.
ताः समेत्य यथान्यायं तस्मिन् सदसि देवताः ।
अब्रुवंल् लोककर्तारं ब्रह्माणं वचनं महत् ॥५॥
5. tāḥ sametya yathānyāyaṃ tasmin sadasi devatāḥ ,
abruvaṃl lokakartāraṃ brahmāṇaṃ vacanaṃ mahat.
5. tāḥ sametya yathānyāyaṃ tasmin sadasi devatāḥ
abruvan lokakartāraṃ brahmāṇaṃ vacanaṃ mahat
5. tāḥ devatāḥ tasmin sadasi yathānyāyaṃ sametya
lokakartāraṃ brahmāṇaṃ mahat vacanaṃ abruvan
5. Those deities, having gathered appropriately in that assembly, addressed Brahmā, the creator of the worlds, with an important message.
भगवंस्त्वत्प्रसादेन रावणो नाम राक्षसः ।
सर्वान्नो बाधते वीर्याच्छासितुं तं न शक्नुमः ॥६॥
6. bhagavaṃstvatprasādena rāvaṇo nāma rākṣasaḥ ,
sarvānno bādhate vīryācchāsituṃ taṃ na śaknumaḥ.
6. bhagavan tvatprasādena rāvaṇaḥ nāma rākṣasaḥ
sarvān naḥ bādhate vīryāt śāsituṃ taṃ na śaknumaḥ
6. bhagavan tvatprasādena rāvaṇaḥ nāma rākṣasaḥ
vīryāt sarvān naḥ bādhate taṃ śāsituṃ na śaknumaḥ
6. O Venerable One, due to your grace, a demon named Rāvaṇa oppresses all of us with his power. We are unable to subdue him.
त्वया तस्मै वरो दत्तः प्रीतेन भगवन्पुरा ।
मानयन्तश्च तं नित्यं सर्वं तस्य क्षमामहे ॥७॥
7. tvayā tasmai varo dattaḥ prītena bhagavanpurā ,
mānayantaśca taṃ nityaṃ sarvaṃ tasya kṣamāmahe.
7. tvayā tasmai varaḥ dattaḥ prītena bhagavan purā
mānayantaḥ ca taṃ nityaṃ sarvaṃ tasya kṣamāmahe
7. bhagavan purā prītena tvayā tasmai varaḥ dattaḥ
ca taṃ nityaṃ mānayantaḥ tasya sarvaṃ kṣamāmahe
7. O Venerable One, in the past, a boon was given by you to him (Rāvaṇa) when you were pleased. And, always respecting him, we tolerate all his actions.
उद्वेजयति लोकांस्त्रीनुच्छ्रितान्द्वेष्टि दुर्मतिः ।
शक्रं त्रिदशराजानं प्रधर्षयितुमिच्छति ॥८॥
8. udvejayati lokāṃstrīnucchritāndveṣṭi durmatiḥ ,
śakraṃ tridaśarājānaṃ pradharṣayitumicchati.
8. udvejayati lokān trīn ucchritān dveṣṭi durmatiḥ
śakram tridaśarājānam pradharṣayitum icchati
8. durmatiḥ lokān trīn udvejayati ucchritān dveṣṭi
śakram tridaśarājānam pradharṣayitum icchati
8. This evil-minded one agitates the three worlds, hates the exalted beings, and wishes to overpower Indra, the king of the gods.
ऋषीन्यक्षान् सगन्धर्वानसुरान्ब्राह्मणांस्तथा ।
अतिक्रामति दुर्धर्षो वरदानेन मोहितः ॥९॥
9. ṛṣīnyakṣān sagandharvānasurānbrāhmaṇāṃstathā ,
atikrāmati durdharṣo varadānena mohitaḥ.
9. ṛṣīn yakṣān sa-gandharvān asurān brāhmaṇān
tathā atikrāmati durdharṣaḥ varadānena mohitaḥ
9. varadānena mohitaḥ durdharṣaḥ ṛṣīn yakṣān
sa-gandharvān asurān tathā brāhmaṇān atikrāmati
9. This unassailable one, deluded by the boon, disrespects sages, Yakshas, along with Gandharvas, Asuras, and also Brahmins.
नैनं सूर्यः प्रतपति पार्श्वे वाति न मारुतः ।
चलोर्मिमाली तं दृष्ट्वा समुद्रो ऽपि न कम्पते ॥१०॥
10. nainaṃ sūryaḥ pratapati pārśve vāti na mārutaḥ ,
calormimālī taṃ dṛṣṭvā samudro'pi na kampate.
10. na enam sūryaḥ pratapati pārśve vāti na mārutaḥ
cala-ūrmi-mālī tam dṛṣṭvā samudraḥ api na kampate
10. sūryaḥ enam na pratapati mārutaḥ pārśve na vāti
cala-ūrmi-mālī samudraḥ api tam dṛṣṭvā na kampate
10. The sun does not scorch him, nor does the wind blow near him. Even the ocean, with its garland of moving waves, does not tremble upon seeing him.
तन्मनन्नो भयं तस्माद् राक्षसाद्घोरदर्शनात् ।
वधार्थं तस्य भगवन्नुपायं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥११॥
11. tanmananno bhayaṃ tasmād rākṣasādghoradarśanāt ,
vadhārthaṃ tasya bhagavannupāyaṃ kartumarhasi.
11. tat manan naḥ bhayam tasmāt rākṣasāt ghoradarśanāt
vadhārtham tasya bhagavan upāyam kartum arhasi
11. bhagavan tasmāt ghoradarśanāt rākṣasāt tat naḥ
manan bhayam tasya vadhārtham upāyam kartum arhasi
11. Therefore, our fear is from that demon of dreadful appearance. O Lord, you ought to devise a means for his killing.
एवमुक्तः सुरैः सर्वैश्चिन्तयित्वा ततो ऽब्रवीत् ।
हन्तायं विहितस्तस्य वधोपायो दुरात्मनः ॥१२॥
12. evamuktaḥ suraiḥ sarvaiścintayitvā tato'bravīt ,
hantāyaṃ vihitastasya vadhopāyo durātmanaḥ.
12. evam uktaḥ suraiḥ sarvaiḥ ca cintayitvā tataḥ abravīt
hanta ayam vihitaḥ tasya vadhopāyaḥ durātmanaḥ
12. suraiḥ sarvaiḥ evam uktaḥ tataḥ cintayitvā ca abravīt
hanta ayam durātmanaḥ tasya vadhopāyaḥ vihitaḥ
12. Having been thus addressed by all the gods, he pondered and then spoke: "Indeed, a means to slay that evil-souled one has been ordained."
तेन गन्धर्वयक्षाणां देवदानवरक्षसाम् ।
अवध्यो ऽस्मीति वागुक्ता तथेत्युक्तं च तन्मया ॥१३॥
13. tena gandharvayakṣāṇāṃ devadānavarakṣasām ,
avadhyo'smīti vāguktā tathetyuktaṃ ca tanmayā.
13. tena gandharva-yakṣāṇām deva-dānava-rakṣasām avadhyaḥ
asmi iti vāk uktā tathā iti uktam ca tat mayā
13. tena gandharva-yakṣāṇām deva-dānava-rakṣasām avadhyaḥ
asmi iti vāk uktā ca mayā tathā iti tat uktam
13. By him, the words "I am invulnerable to Gandharvas, Yakshas, Devas, Danavas, and Rakshasas" were spoken, and "So be it" was said by me.
नाकीर्तयदवज्ञानात्तद् रक्षो मानुषांस्तदा ।
तस्मात् स मानुषाद्वध्यो मृतुर्नान्यो ऽस्य विद्यते ॥१४॥
14. nākīrtayadavajñānāttad rakṣo mānuṣāṃstadā ,
tasmāt sa mānuṣādvadhyo mṛturnānyo'sya vidyate.
14. na akīrtayat avajñānāt tat rakṣaḥ mānuṣān tadā tasmāt
sa mānuṣāt vadhyaḥ mṛtuḥ na anyaḥ asya vidyate
14. tat rakṣaḥ avajñānāt tadā mānuṣān na akīrtayat tasmāt
sa mānuṣāt vadhyaḥ asya anyaḥ mṛtuḥ na vidyate
14. That Rakshasa, out of disdain, did not mention humans at that time. Therefore, he is to be slain by a human; no other death exists for him.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा प्रियं वाक्यं ब्रह्मणा समुदाहृतम् ।
देवा महर्षयः सर्वे प्रहृष्टास्ते ऽभवंस्तदा ॥१५॥
15. etacchrutvā priyaṃ vākyaṃ brahmaṇā samudāhṛtam ,
devā maharṣayaḥ sarve prahṛṣṭāste'bhavaṃstadā.
15. etat śrutvā priyam vākyam brahmaṇā sam-udāhṛtam
devā maharṣayaḥ sarve prahṛṣṭāḥ te abhavan tadā
15. brahmaṇā sam-udāhṛtam etat priyam vākyam śrutvā
sarve devā maharṣayaḥ te tadā prahṛṣṭāḥ abhavan
15. Having heard this pleasing statement spoken by Brahmā, all the gods and great sages then became exceedingly joyful.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे विष्णुरुपयातो महाद्युतिः ।
ब्रह्मणा च समागम्य तत्र तस्थौ समाहितः ॥१६॥
16. etasminnantare viṣṇurupayāto mahādyutiḥ ,
brahmaṇā ca samāgamya tatra tasthau samāhitaḥ.
16. etasmin antare viṣṇuḥ upayātaḥ mahādyutiḥ
brahmaṇā ca samāgamya tatra tasthau samāhitaḥ
16. viṣṇuḥ mahādyutiḥ etasmin antare upayātaḥ
brahmaṇā ca samāgamya tatra samāhitaḥ tasthau
16. In the meantime, the greatly resplendent Vishnu arrived. Having met with Brahmā, he remained there, composed.
तमब्रुवन् सुराः सर्वे समभिष्टूय संनताः ।
त्वां नियोक्ष्यामहे विष्णो लोकानां हितकाम्यया ॥१७॥
17. tamabruvan surāḥ sarve samabhiṣṭūya saṃnatāḥ ,
tvāṃ niyokṣyāmahe viṣṇo lokānāṃ hitakāmyayā.
17. tam abruvan surāḥ sarve samabhiṣṭūya saṃnatāḥ
tvām niyokṣyāmahe viṣṇo lokānām hitakāmyayā
17. sarve saṃnatāḥ surāḥ tam samabhiṣṭūya abruvan
viṣṇo lokānām hitakāmyayā tvām niyokṣyāmahe
17. All the gods, having praised him thoroughly and bowed humbly, said to him: "O Vishnu, we shall appoint you for the welfare of the worlds."
राज्ञो दशरथस्य त्वमयोध्याधिपतेर्विभो ।
धर्मज्ञस्य वदान्यस्य महर्षिसमतेजसः ।
तस्य भार्यासु तिसृषु ह्रीश्रीकीर्त्युपमासु च ।
विष्णो पुत्रत्वमागच्छ कृत्वात्मानं चतुर्विधम् ॥१८॥
18. rājño daśarathasya tvamayodhyādhipatervibho ,
dharmajñasya vadānyasya maharṣisamatejasaḥ ,
tasya bhāryāsu tisṛṣu hrīśrīkīrtyupamāsu ca ,
viṣṇo putratvamāgaccha kṛtvātmānaṃ caturvidham.
18. rājñaḥ daśarathasya tvam ayodhyādhipateḥ vibho
dharmajñasya vadānyasya maharṣisamatejasaḥ
tasya bhāryāsu tisṛṣu hrīśrīkīrtyupamāsu ca
viṣṇo putratvam āgaccha kṛtvā ātmānam caturvidham
18. viṣṇo vibho tvam ayodhyādhipateḥ dharmajñasya
vadānyasya maharṣisamatejasaḥ tasya rājñaḥ
daśarathasya tisṛṣu hrīśrīkīrtyupamāsu bhāryāsu
ātmānam caturvidham kṛtvā putratvam āgaccha
18. O all-pervading one (vibhu), become the son of King Dasharatha, the ruler of Ayodhya, who understands natural law (dharma), is generous, and whose brilliance rivals that of a great sage. Do this in his three wives, who are likened to Modesty, Prosperity, and Fame, by manifesting your Self (ātman) in a fourfold form.
तत्र त्वं मानुषो भूत्वा प्रवृद्धं लोककण्टकम् ।
अवध्यं दैवतैर्विष्णो समरे जहि रावणम् ॥१९॥
19. tatra tvaṃ mānuṣo bhūtvā pravṛddhaṃ lokakaṇṭakam ,
avadhyaṃ daivatairviṣṇo samare jahi rāvaṇam.
19. tatra tvam mānuṣaḥ bhūtvā pravṛddham lokakaṇṭakam
avadhyam daivataiḥ viṣṇo samare jahi rāvaṇam
19. viṣṇo tatra tvam mānuṣaḥ bhūtvā pravṛddham
lokakaṇṭakam daivataiḥ avadhyam rāvaṇam samare jahi
19. There, O Vishnu, having become a human, kill in battle that formidable tormentor of the people, Rāvaṇa, who is invincible by the gods.
स हि देवान् सगन्धर्वान् सिद्धांश्च ऋषिसत्तमान् ।
राक्षसो रावणो मूर्खो वीर्योत्सेकेन बाधते ॥२०॥
20. sa hi devān sagandharvān siddhāṃśca ṛṣisattamān ,
rākṣaso rāvaṇo mūrkho vīryotsekena bādhate.
20. saḥ hi devān sa-gandharvān siddhān ca ṛṣi-sattamān
rākṣasaḥ rāvaṇaḥ mūrkhaḥ vīrya-utsekena bādhate
20. saḥ rākṣasaḥ rāvaṇaḥ mūrkhaḥ hi vīrya-utsekena
devān sa-gandharvān siddhān ca ṛṣi-sattamān bādhate
20. Indeed, that foolish demon Ravana harasses the gods, along with the Gandharvas, Siddhas, and the foremost sages, inflated by his own might.
तदुद्धतं रावणमृद्धतेजसं प्रवृद्धदर्पं त्रिदशेश्वरद्विषम् ।
विरावणं साधु तपस्विकण्टकं तपस्विनामुद्धर तं भयावहम् ॥२१॥
21. taduddhataṃ rāvaṇamṛddhatejasaṃ pravṛddhadarpaṃ tridaśeśvaradviṣam ,
virāvaṇaṃ sādhu tapasvikaṇṭakaṃ tapasvināmuddhara taṃ bhayāvaham.
21. tat uddhatam rāvaṇam ṛddha-tejasam
pra-vṛddha-darpam tri-daśa-īśvara-dviṣam
vi-rāvaṇam sādhu tapasvi-kaṇṭakam
tapasvinām uddhara tam bhaya-āvaham
21. sādhu uddhara tam rāvaṇam uddhatam
ṛddha-tejasam pra-vṛddha-darpam
tri-daśa-īśvara-dviṣam vi-rāvaṇam
tapasvi-kaṇṭakam tapasvinām bhaya-āvaham
21. Please indeed, deliver us from that arrogant Ravana, whose might has grown, whose pride has greatly increased, who is an enemy of the lords of the gods, who causes great suffering, who is a thorn to the ascetics (tapasvins), and who is terrifying to them.
