ततस्तमसि संजाते राक्षसा दैवतैः सह ।
अयुध्यन्त बलोन्मत्ताः सूदयन्तः परस्परम् ॥१॥

1. Then, as darkness fell, the rākṣasas, maddened by their strength, fought with the gods, destroying each other.

दशांशं स्थापितं युद्धे शेषं नीतं यमक्षयम् ॥२॥
2. tatastu devasainyena rākṣasānāṃ mahadbalam ,
daśāṃśaṃ sthāpitaṃ yuddhe śeṣaṃ nītaṃ yamakṣayam.

2. Then, by the army of the gods, only one-tenth of the great force of rākṣasas remained stationed in the battle; the rest was taken to the abode of Yama (yamakṣayam).
तस्मिंस्तु तमसा नद्धे सर्वे ते देवराक्षसाः ।
अन्योन्यं नाभ्यजानन्त युध्यमानाः परस्परम् ॥३॥
3. tasmiṃstu tamasā naddhe sarve te devarākṣasāḥ ,
anyonyaṃ nābhyajānanta yudhyamānāḥ parasparam.

3. When it was enveloped by darkness, all those gods and rākṣasas, fighting, could not recognize one another.
इन्द्रश्च रावणश्चैव रावणिश्च महाबलः ।
तस्मिंस्तमोजालवृते मोहमीयुर्न ते त्रयः ॥४॥
4. indraśca rāvaṇaścaiva rāvaṇiśca mahābalaḥ ,
tasmiṃstamojālavṛte mohamīyurna te trayaḥ.

4. Indra, Rāvaṇa, and the mighty Rāvaṇi (Meghanāda) – those three did not fall into confusion (moha) in that place enveloped by a net of darkness.
स तु दृष्ट्वा बलं सर्वं निहतं रावणो रणे ।
क्रोधमभ्यागमत्तीव्रं महानादं च मुक्तवान् ॥५॥
5. sa tu dṛṣṭvā balaṃ sarvaṃ nihataṃ rāvaṇo raṇe ,
krodhamabhyāgamattīvraṃ mahānādaṃ ca muktavān.

5. But Rāvaṇa, having seen his entire army destroyed in the battle, became intensely angry and let out a great roar.
क्रोधात् सूतं च दुर्धर्षः स्यन्दनस्थमुवाच ह ।
परसैन्यस्य मध्येन यावदन्तं नयस्व माम् ॥६॥
6. krodhāt sūtaṃ ca durdharṣaḥ syandanasthamuvāca ha ,
parasainyasya madhyena yāvadantaṃ nayasva mām.

6. Filled with rage, the formidable warrior spoke to his charioteer, who was seated in the chariot: "Lead me right to the end, straight through the heart of the enemy army."
अद्यैतांस्त्रिदशान् सर्वान् विक्रमैः समरे स्वयम् ।
नानाशस्त्रैर्महासारैर्नाशयामि नभस्तलात् ॥७॥
7. adyaitāṃstridaśān sarvān vikramaiḥ samare svayam ,
nānāśastrairmahāsārairnāśayāmi nabhastalāt.
7. adya etān tridaśān sarvān vikramaiḥ samare svayam
| nānāśastraiḥ mahāsāraiḥ nāśayāmi nabhastalāt

7. Today, by my own valor and with various potent weapons, I shall personally destroy all these gods (tridaśān) in battle, bringing them down from the sky.
अहमिन्द्रं वधिष्यामि वरुणं धनदं यमम् ।
त्रिदशान् विनिहत्याशु स्वयं स्थास्याम्यथोपरि ॥८॥
8. ahamindraṃ vadhiṣyāmi varuṇaṃ dhanadaṃ yamam ,
tridaśān vinihatyāśu svayaṃ sthāsyāmyathopari.
8. aham indram vadhiṣyāmi varuṇam dhanadam yamam |
tridaśān vinihatya āśu svayam sthāsyāmi atha upari
8. aham indram varuṇam dhanadam yamam vadhiṣyāmi
tridaśān āśu vinihatya svayam atha upari sthāsyāmi
8. I shall slay Indra, Varuṇa, Kubera (Dhanada), and Yama. After swiftly defeating these gods (tridaśān), I myself will then take my place supreme above all.
विषादो न च कर्तव्यः शीघ्रं वाहय मे रथम् ।
द्विः खलु त्वां ब्रवीम्यद्य यावदन्तं नयस्व माम् ॥९॥
9. viṣādo na ca kartavyaḥ śīghraṃ vāhaya me ratham ,
dviḥ khalu tvāṃ bravīmyadya yāvadantaṃ nayasva mām.
9. viṣādaḥ na ca kartavyaḥ śīghram vāhaya me ratham |
dviḥ khalu tvām bravīmi adya yāvat antam nayasva mām
9. viṣādaḥ ca na kartavyaḥ me ratham śīghram vāhaya adya

9. There is no room for despair (viṣāda)! Quickly drive my chariot. I tell you this twice today: "Lead me to the very end!"
अयं स नन्दनोद्देशो यत्र वर्तामहे वयम् ।
नय मामद्य तत्र त्वमुदयो यत्र पर्वतः ॥१०॥
10. ayaṃ sa nandanoddeśo yatra vartāmahe vayam ,
naya māmadya tatra tvamudayo yatra parvataḥ.
10. ayam sa nandanoddeśaḥ yatra vartāmahe vayam
naya mām adya tatra tvam udayaḥ yatra parvataḥ
10. ayam sa nandanoddeśaḥ yatra vayam vartāmahe

10. This is that very region of Nandana where we are staying. You must lead me today to where the Udaya mountain is located.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा तुरगान् स मनोजवान् ।
आदिदेशाथ शत्रूणां मध्येनैव च सारथिः ॥११॥
11. tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā turagān sa manojavān ,
ādideśātha śatrūṇāṃ madhyenaiva ca sārathiḥ.
11. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā turagān sa manojavān
ādideśa atha śatrūṇām madhyena eva ca sārathiḥ
11. sa sārathiḥ tasya tat vacanam śrutvā atha

11. Having heard his words, that charioteer then indeed commanded the mind-swift horses to proceed directly into the midst of the enemies.
तस्य तं निश्चयं ज्ञात्वा शक्रो देवेश्वरस्तदा ।
रथस्थः समरस्थांस्तान्देवान् वाक्यमथाब्रवीत् ॥१२॥
12. tasya taṃ niścayaṃ jñātvā śakro deveśvarastadā ,
rathasthaḥ samarasthāṃstāndevān vākyamathābravīt.
12. tasya tam niścayam jñātvā śakraḥ deveśvaraḥ tadā
rathasthaḥ samarasthān tān devān vākyam atha abravīt
12. tadā śakraḥ deveśvaraḥ rathasthaḥ tasya tam niścayam
jñātvā samarasthān tān devān atha vākyam abravīt
12. Having understood his firm resolve, Indra (śakraḥ), the lord of the gods (deveśvaraḥ), who was then seated in his chariot, spoke these words to those gods (deva) who were present on the battlefield.
सुराः शृणुत मद्वाक्यं यत्तावन्मम रोचते ।
जीवन्नेव दशग्रीवः साधु रक्षो निगृह्यताम् ॥१३॥
13. surāḥ śṛṇuta madvākyaṃ yattāvanmama rocate ,
jīvanneva daśagrīvaḥ sādhu rakṣo nigṛhyatām.
13. surāḥ śṛṇuta mat vākyam yat tāvat mama rocate
jīvan eva daśagrīvaḥ sādhu rakṣaḥ nigṛhyatām
13. surāḥ śṛṇuta yat tāvat mama vākyam rocate

13. O gods (sura), listen to my words, which indeed please me. Daśagrīva, that evil being (rakṣa), should be properly captured while still alive.
एष ह्यतिबलः सैन्ये रथेन पवनौजसा ।
गमिष्यति प्रवृद्धोर्मिः समुद्र इव पर्वणि ॥१४॥
14. eṣa hyatibalaḥ sainye rathena pavanaujasā ,
gamiṣyati pravṛddhormiḥ samudra iva parvaṇi.
14. eṣaḥ hi atibalaḥ sainye rathena pavanojjasā
gamiṣyati pravṛddhormiḥ samudraḥ iva parvaṇi
14. eṣaḥ hi atibalaḥ pavanojjasā rathena sainye
pravṛddhormiḥ parvaṇi samudraḥ iva gamiṣyati
14. Indeed, this exceedingly mighty one, riding a chariot swift as the wind, will advance through the ranks like an ocean with surging waves during a full moon.
न ह्येष हन्तुं शक्यो ऽद्य वरदानात् सुनिर्भयः ।
तद्ग्रहीष्यामहे रक्षो यत्ता भवत संयुगे ॥१५॥
15. na hyeṣa hantuṃ śakyo'dya varadānāt sunirbhayaḥ ,
tadgrahīṣyāmahe rakṣo yattā bhavata saṃyuge.
15. na hi eṣaḥ hantum śakyaḥ adya varadānāt sunirbhayaḥ
tat grahīṣyāmahe rakṣaḥ yattāḥ bhavata saṃyuge
15. eṣaḥ hi adya varadānāt sunirbhayaḥ hantum na śakyaḥ.
tat rakṣaḥ grahīṣyāmahe.
saṃyuge yattāḥ bhavata.
15. Indeed, this one cannot be killed now; he is utterly fearless due to the boon he has received. Therefore, we shall capture this demon. Be prepared in battle!
यथा बलिं निगृह्यैतत्त्रैलोक्यं भुज्यते मया ।
एवमेतस्य पापस्य निग्रहो मम रोचते ॥१६॥
16. yathā baliṃ nigṛhyaitattrailokyaṃ bhujyate mayā ,
evametasya pāpasya nigraho mama rocate.
16. yathā balim nigṛhya etat trailokyam bhujyate
mayā evam etasya pāpasya nigrahaḥ mama rocate
16. yathā mayā balim nigṛhya etat trailokyam bhujyate,
evam etasya pāpasya nigrahaḥ mama rocate.
16. Just as, having subdued Bali, these three worlds are enjoyed by me, so too is the subjugation of this wicked one pleasing to me.
ततो ऽन्यं देशमास्थाय शक्रः संत्यज्य रावणम् ।
अयुध्यत महातेजा राक्षसान्नाशयन् रणे ॥१७॥
17. tato'nyaṃ deśamāsthāya śakraḥ saṃtyajya rāvaṇam ,
ayudhyata mahātejā rākṣasānnāśayan raṇe.
17. tataḥ anyam deśam āsthāya śakraḥ saṃtyajya
rāvaṇam ayudhyata mahātejāḥ rākṣasān nāśayan raṇe
17. tataḥ mahātejāḥ śakraḥ rāvaṇam saṃtyajya anyam deśam āsthāya raṇe rākṣasān nāśayan ayudhyata.
17. Then, having moved to another location, Indra, the greatly resplendent one, abandoned Rāvaṇa and fought, destroying the demons (rākṣasa) in battle.
उत्तरेण दशग्रीवः प्रविवेशानिवर्तितः ।
दक्षिणेन तु पार्श्वेन प्रविवेश शतक्रतुः ॥१८॥
18. uttareṇa daśagrīvaḥ praviveśānivartitaḥ ,
dakṣiṇena tu pārśvena praviveśa śatakratuḥ.

dakṣiṇena tu pārśvena praviveśa śatakratuḥ
18. daśagrīvaḥ anivartitaḥ uttareṇa praviveśa.

18. Daśagrīva entered from the northern side, advancing without turning back. But Indra (śatakratu) entered from the southern flank.
ततः स योजनशतं प्रविष्टो राक्षसाधिपः ।
देवतानां बलं कृत्स्नं शरवर्षैरवाकिरत् ॥१९॥
19. tataḥ sa yojanaśataṃ praviṣṭo rākṣasādhipaḥ ,
devatānāṃ balaṃ kṛtsnaṃ śaravarṣairavākirat.
19. tataḥ sa yojanaśatam praviṣṭaḥ rākṣasādhipaḥ
devatānām balam kṛtsnam śaravarṣaiḥ avākirat
19. tataḥ sa rākṣasādhipaḥ yojanaśatam praviṣṭaḥ devatānām kṛtsnam balam śaravarṣaiḥ avākirat.
19. Then, having advanced a hundred yojanas, that king of the rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa) showered the entire army of the gods with volleys of arrows.
ततः शक्रो निरीक्ष्याथ प्रविष्टं तं बलं स्वकम् ।
न्यवर्तयदसंभ्रान्तः समावृत्य दशाननम् ॥२०॥
20. tataḥ śakro nirīkṣyātha praviṣṭaṃ taṃ balaṃ svakam ,
nyavartayadasaṃbhrāntaḥ samāvṛtya daśānanam.
20. tataḥ śakraḥ nirīkṣya atha praviṣṭam tam balam
svakam nyavartayat asaṃbhrāntaḥ samāvṛtya daśānanam
20. tataḥ śakraḥ atha svakam praviṣṭam tam balam nirīkṣya asaṃbhrāntaḥ samāvṛtya daśānanam nyavartayat.
20. Then, upon seeing his own army penetrated by the enemy, Indra (śakra), undisturbed, repelled Daśānana (Rāvaṇa) by encircling him.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे नादो मुक्तो दानवराक्षसैः ।
हा हताः स्मेति तं दृष्ट्वा ग्रस्तं शक्रेण रावणम् ॥२१॥
21. etasminnantare nādo mukto dānavarākṣasaiḥ ,
hā hatāḥ smeti taṃ dṛṣṭvā grastaṃ śakreṇa rāvaṇam.
21. etasmin antare nādaḥ muktaḥ dānavarākṣasaiḥ hā
hatāḥ sma iti tam dṛṣṭvā grastam śakreṇa rāvaṇam
21. etasmin antare dānavarākṣasaiḥ nādaḥ muktaḥ hā hatāḥ sma iti śakreṇa grastam tam rāvaṇam dṛṣṭvā.
21. At this moment, a cry of "Alas, we are ruined!" was uttered by the dānavas and rākṣasas, seeing Rāvaṇa thus overwhelmed by Indra (śakra).
ततो रथं समारुह्य रावणिः क्रोधमूर्छितः ।
तत् सैन्यमतिसंक्रुद्धः प्रविवेश सुदारुणम् ॥२२॥
22. tato rathaṃ samāruhya rāvaṇiḥ krodhamūrchitaḥ ,
tat sainyamatisaṃkruddhaḥ praviveśa sudāruṇam.
22. tataḥ ratham samāruhya rāvaṇiḥ krodhamūrcchitaḥ
tat sainyam atisaṃkruddhaḥ praviveśa sudāruṇam
22. tataḥ krodhamūrcchitaḥ atisaṃkruddhaḥ rāvaṇiḥ
ratham samāruhya sudāruṇam tat sainyam praviveśa
22. Then, Rāvaṇi, overcome with rage and exceedingly furious, mounted his chariot and entered that exceedingly formidable army.
स तां प्रविश्य मायां तु दत्तां गोपतिना पुरा ।
अदृश्यः सर्वभूतानां तत् सैन्यं समवाकिरत् ॥२३॥
23. sa tāṃ praviśya māyāṃ tu dattāṃ gopatinā purā ,
adṛśyaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ tat sainyaṃ samavākirat.
23. sa tām praviśya māyām tu dattām gopatinā purā
adṛśyaḥ sarvabhūtānām tat sainyam samavākirat
23. saḥ purā gopatinā dattām tām māyām tu praviśya
sarvabhūtānām adṛśyaḥ tat sainyam samavākirat
23. Indeed, having resorted to that illusion (māyā), which was formerly granted to him by Gopati, he became invisible to all beings and showered that army [with weapons].
ततः स देवान् संत्यज्य शक्रमेवाभ्ययाद्द्रुतम् ।
महेन्द्रश्च महातेजा न ददर्श सुतं रिपोः ॥२४॥
24. tataḥ sa devān saṃtyajya śakramevābhyayāddrutam ,
mahendraśca mahātejā na dadarśa sutaṃ ripoḥ.
24. tataḥ sa devān saṃtyajya śakram eva abhyayāt drutam
mahendraḥ ca mahātejāḥ na dadarśa sutam ripoḥ
24. tataḥ saḥ devān saṃtyajya śakram eva drutam abhyayāt
ca mahātejāḥ mahendraḥ ripoḥ sutam na dadarśa
24. Then, Indrajit, leaving aside the other gods, swiftly attacked Indra himself. However, Mahendra, the mighty and greatly resplendent one, did not see the enemy's son.
स मातलिं हयांश्चैव ताडयित्वा शरोत्तमैः ।
महेन्द्रं बाणवर्षेण शीघ्रहस्तो ह्यवाकिरत् ॥२५॥
25. sa mātaliṃ hayāṃścaiva tāḍayitvā śarottamaiḥ ,
mahendraṃ bāṇavarṣeṇa śīghrahasto hyavākirat.
25. sa mātaliṃ hayān ca eva tāḍayitvā śarottamaiḥ
mahendram bāṇavarṣeṇa śīghrahastaḥ hi avākirat
25. hi śīghrahastaḥ saḥ śarottamaiḥ mātaliṃ hayān
ca eva tāḍayitvā bāṇavarṣeṇa mahendram avākirat
25. Indeed, he, being swift-handed, first struck Matali and the horses with excellent arrows, and then showered Mahendra (Indra) with a volley of arrows.
ततः शक्रो रथं त्यक्त्व विसृज्य च स मातलिम् ।
ऐरावतं समारुह्य मृगयामास रावणिम् ॥२६॥
26. tataḥ śakro rathaṃ tyaktva visṛjya ca sa mātalim ,
airāvataṃ samāruhya mṛgayāmāsa rāvaṇim.
26. tataḥ śakraḥ ratham tyaktvā visṛjya ca saḥ
mātaliṃ airāvataṃ samāruhya mṛgayām āsa rāvaṇim
26. tataḥ saḥ śakraḥ ratham tyaktvā ca mātaliṃ
visṛjya airāvataṃ samāruhya rāvaṇim mṛgayām āsa
26. Then Indra, abandoning his chariot and dismissing Mātali, mounted Airāvata and pursued Rāvaṇi (Indrajit).
स तु माया बलाद् रक्षः संग्रामे नाभ्यदृश्यत ।
किरमाणः शरौघेन महेन्द्रममितौजसं ॥२७॥
27. sa tu māyā balād rakṣaḥ saṃgrāme nābhyadṛśyata ,
kiramāṇaḥ śaraughena mahendramamitaujasaṃ.
27. saḥ tu māyā balāt rakṣaḥ saṃgrāme na abhyadṛśyata
kiramāṇaḥ śaraugheṇa mahendram amitaujasam
27. saḥ tu rakṣaḥ māyā balāt amitaujasam mahendram
śaraugheṇa kiramāṇaḥ api saṃgrāme na abhyadṛśyata
27. But that demon, by the power of his illusion (māyā), was not visible in battle, even as he showered Mahendra, who possessed immeasurable might, with a torrent of arrows.
स तं यदा परिश्रान्तमिन्द्रं मेने ऽथ रावणिः ।
तदैनं मायया बद्ध्वा स्वसैन्यमभितो ऽनयत् ॥२८॥
28. sa taṃ yadā pariśrāntamindraṃ mene'tha rāvaṇiḥ ,
tadainaṃ māyayā baddhvā svasainyamabhito'nayat.
28. saḥ tam yadā pariśrāntam indram mene atha rāvaṇiḥ
tadā enam māyayā baddhvā sva-sainyam abhitaḥ anayat
28. yadā rāvaṇiḥ atha saḥ tam pariśrāntam indram mene,
tadā (saḥ) enam māyayā baddhvā sva-sainyam abhitaḥ anayat
28. When Rāvaṇi perceived Indra to be exhausted, he then bound him by means of illusion (māyā) and led him towards his own army.
तं दृष्ट्वाथ बलात्तस्मिन्माययापहृतं रणे ।
महेन्द्रममराः सर्वे किं न्वेतदिति चुक्रुशुः ।
न हि दृश्यति विद्यावान्मायया येन नीयते ॥२९॥
29. taṃ dṛṣṭvātha balāttasminmāyayāpahṛtaṃ raṇe ,
mahendramamarāḥ sarve kiṃ nvetaditi cukruśuḥ ,
na hi dṛśyati vidyāvānmāyayā yena nīyate.
29. tam dṛṣṭvā atha balāt tasmin māyayā
apahṛtam raṇe mahendram amarāḥ
sarve kim nu etat iti cukruśuḥ na hi
dṛśyati vidyāvān māyayā yena nīyate
29. atha sarve amarāḥ raṇe māyayā balāt apahṛtam tam mahendram dṛṣṭvā,
"kim nu etat? yena māyayā nīyate (saḥ) vidyāvān hi na dṛśyati" iti cukruśuḥ
29. Seeing Mahendra thus forcefully carried away by illusion (māyā) in battle, all the immortals cried out, "What is this? The master of illusion (māyā) by whom he is being led is not even visible!"
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे चापि सर्वे सुरगणास्तदा ।
अभ्यद्रवन् सुसंक्रुद्धा रावणं शस्त्रवृष्टिभिः ॥३०॥
30. etasminnantare cāpi sarve suragaṇāstadā ,
abhyadravan susaṃkruddhā rāvaṇaṃ śastravṛṣṭibhiḥ.
30. etasmin antare ca api sarve suragaṇāḥ tadā
abhyadravan susaṃkruddhāḥ rāvaṇam śastravṛṣṭibhiḥ
30. At that very moment, all the hosts of gods, extremely enraged, rushed towards Ravana with showers of weapons.
रावणस्तु समासाद्य वस्वादित्यमरुद्गणान् ।
न शशाक रणे स्थातुं न योद्धुं शस्त्रपीडितः ॥३१॥
31. rāvaṇastu samāsādya vasvādityamarudgaṇān ,
na śaśāka raṇe sthātuṃ na yoddhuṃ śastrapīḍitaḥ.
31. rāvaṇaḥ tu samāsādya vasvādityamarudgaṇān na
śaśāka raṇe sthātum na yoddhum śastrapīḍitaḥ
31. But Ravana, having faced the groups of Vasus, Adityas, and Maruts, and afflicted by their weapons, was unable to stand or fight in battle.
तं तु दृष्ट्वा परिश्रान्तं प्रहारैर्जर्जरच्छविम् ।
रावणिः पितरं युद्धे ऽदर्शनस्थो ऽब्रवीदिदम् ॥३२॥
32. taṃ tu dṛṣṭvā pariśrāntaṃ prahārairjarjaracchavim ,
rāvaṇiḥ pitaraṃ yuddhe'darśanastho'bravīdidam.
32. tam tu dṛṣṭvā pariśrāntam prahāraiḥ jarjaracchavim
rāvaṇiḥ pitaram yuddhe adarśanasthaḥ abravīt idam
32. But Ravani (Indrajit), invisible and standing out of sight in battle, seeing his father exhausted and with his body shattered by the blows, spoke this to him.
आगच्छ तात गच्छावो निवृत्तं रणकर्म तत् ।
जितं ते विदितं भो ऽस्तु स्वस्थो भव गतज्वरः ॥३३॥
33. āgaccha tāta gacchāvo nivṛttaṃ raṇakarma tat ,
jitaṃ te viditaṃ bho'stu svastho bhava gatajvaraḥ.
33. āgaccha tāta gacchāvaḥ nivṛttam raṇakarma tat jitam
te viditam bhoḥ astu svasthaḥ bhava gatajvaraḥ
33. Come, father, let us go! That fighting is over. Let it be known that victory is yours. Be well and free from distress.
अयं हि सुरसैन्यस्य त्रैलोक्यस्य च यः प्रभुः ।
स गृहीतो मया शक्रो भग्नमानाः सुराः कृताः ॥३४॥
34. ayaṃ hi surasainyasya trailokyasya ca yaḥ prabhuḥ ,
sa gṛhīto mayā śakro bhagnamānāḥ surāḥ kṛtāḥ.

34. Indeed, this Śakra, who is the lord of the army of the gods and of the three worlds, has been captured by me. The gods have been humbled.
यथेष्टं भुङ्क्ष्व त्रैलोक्यं निगृह्य रिपुमोजसा ।
वृथा ते किं श्रमं कृत्वा युद्धं हि तव निष्फलम् ॥३५॥
35. yatheṣṭaṃ bhuṅkṣva trailokyaṃ nigṛhya ripumojasā ,
vṛthā te kiṃ śramaṃ kṛtvā yuddhaṃ hi tava niṣphalam.
35. yathā iṣṭam bhuṅkṣva trailokyam nigṛhya ripum ojasā
vṛthā te kim śramam kṛtvā yuddham hi tava niṣphalam
35. ripum ojasā nigṛhya,
yathā iṣṭam trailokyam bhuṅkṣva.
te vṛthā kim śramam kṛtvā? hi tava yuddham niṣphalam.
35. Enjoy the three worlds to your heart's content, having subdued the enemy with your might. Why make effort in vain? Indeed, your battle is fruitless.
स दैवतबलात्तस्मान्निवृत्तो रणकर्मणः ।
तच्छ्रुत्वा रावणेर्वाक्यं स्वस्थचेता दशाननः ॥३६॥
36. sa daivatabalāttasmānnivṛtto raṇakarmaṇaḥ ,
tacchrutvā rāvaṇervākyaṃ svasthacetā daśānanaḥ.
36. saḥ daivatabalāt tasmāt nivṛttaḥ raṇakarmaṇaḥ
tat śrutvā rāvaṇeḥ vākyam svasthacetāḥ daśānanaḥ
36. saḥ daivatabalāt tasmāt raṇakarmaṇaḥ nivṛttaḥ.
rāvaṇeḥ tat vākyam śrutvā,
daśānanaḥ svasthacetāḥ.
36. Due to the divine power (of Brahma's intervention), he (Indra) was released from that act of war (karma). Hearing that statement from Ravana's son, Dashanana (Ravana) became calm and composed.
अथ रणविगतज्वरः प्रभुर्विजयमवाप्य निशाचराधिपः ।
भवनमभि ततो जगाम हृष्टः स्वसुतमवाप्य च वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥३७॥
37. atha raṇavigatajvaraḥ prabhurvijayamavāpya niśācarādhipaḥ ,
bhavanamabhi tato jagāma hṛṣṭaḥ svasutamavāpya ca vākyamabravīt.

37. Then, having achieved victory and freed from the anxiety of battle, the lord of the Rākṣasas (Ravana) delightedly went towards his palace. And having met his own son, he spoke these words.
अतिबलसदृशैः पराक्रमैस्तैर्मम कुलमानविवर्धनं कृतम् ।
यदमरसमविक्रम त्वया त्रिदशपतिस्त्रिदशाश्च निर्जिताः ॥३८॥
38. atibalasadṛśaiḥ parākramaistairmama kulamānavivardhanaṃ kṛtam ,
yadamarasamavikrama tvayā tridaśapatistridaśāśca nirjitāḥ.

38. Through those exceedingly mighty feats, the honor of my lineage has been greatly enhanced, because, O warrior whose valor is equal to that of the immortals, you have conquered the lord of the gods (Indra) and the gods themselves.
त्वरितमुपनयस्व वासवं नगरमितो व्रज सैन्यसंवृतः ।
अहमपि तव गच्छतो द्रुतं सह सचिवैरनुयामि पृष्ठतः ॥३९॥
39. tvaritamupanayasva vāsavaṃ nagaramito vraja sainyasaṃvṛtaḥ ,
ahamapi tava gacchato drutaṃ saha sacivairanuyāmi pṛṣṭhataḥ.

nagaram itaḥ vraja sainyasaṃvṛtaḥ
aham api tava gacchataḥ drutam
saha sacivaiḥ anuyāmi pṛṣṭhataḥ

aham api tava gacchataḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ sacivaiḥ saha drutam anuyāmi
39. Swiftly bring Indra (Vāsava); go from here to the city, surrounded by your army. I too will quickly follow behind you, accompanied by my ministers, as you depart.
अथ स बलवृतः सवाहनस्त्रिदशपतिं परिगृह्य रावणिः ।
स्वभवनमुपगम्य राक्षसो मुदितमना विससर्ज राक्षसान् ॥४०॥
40. atha sa balavṛtaḥ savāhanastridaśapatiṃ parigṛhya rāvaṇiḥ ,
svabhavanamupagamya rākṣaso muditamanā visasarja rākṣasān.

svabhavanam upagamya rākṣasaḥ muditamanāḥ visasrja rākṣasān

40. Then, Rāvaṇa's son (Indrajit), surrounded by his army and with his vehicle, having captured the lord of the gods (Indra), arrived at his own dwelling and, with a joyful mind, dismissed his rākṣasa attendants.
