ब्रुवद्भिरेवमृषिभिः काकुत्स्थो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
किं कार्यं ब्रूत भवतां भयं नाशयितास्मि वः ॥१॥
1. bruvadbhirevamṛṣibhiḥ kākutstho vākyamabravīt ,

1. As the sages spoke thus, Kakutstha (Rama) said: 'What is the task? Tell me, and I shall destroy your fear!'
तथा वदति काकुत्स्थे भार्गवो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
भयं नः शृणु यन्मूलं देशस्य च नरेश्वर ॥२॥
2. tathā vadati kākutsthe bhārgavo vākyamabravīt ,
bhayaṃ naḥ śṛṇu yanmūlaṃ deśasya ca nareśvara.

bhayam naḥ śṛṇu yat mūlam deśasya ca nareśvara

"
2. While Kakutstha (Rama) was speaking thus, Bhargava (Viśvāmitra) said: 'O king, hear about our fear, and its origin in this region.'
पूर्वं कृतयुगे राम दैतेयः सुमहाबलः ।
लोलापुत्रो ऽभवज्ज्येष्ठो मधुर्नाम महासुरः ॥३॥
3. pūrvaṃ kṛtayuge rāma daiteyaḥ sumahābalaḥ ,
lolāputro'bhavajjyeṣṭho madhurnāma mahāsuraḥ.

lolāputraḥ abhavat jyeṣṭhaḥ madhuḥ nāma mahāsuraḥ

3. O Rāma, formerly, in the Kṛta yuga, there was a very mighty son of Diti, the eldest son of Lolā, a great demon named Madhu.
ब्रह्मण्यश्च शरण्यश्च बुद्ध्या च परिनिष्ठितः ।
सुरैश्च परमोदारैः प्रीतिस्तस्यातुलाभवत् ॥४॥
4. brahmaṇyaśca śaraṇyaśca buddhyā ca pariniṣṭhitaḥ ,
suraiśca paramodāraiḥ prītistasyātulābhavat.
4. brahmaṇyaḥ ca śaraṇyaḥ ca buddhyā ca pariniṣṭhitaḥ
suraiḥ ca paramodāraiḥ prītiḥ tasya atulā abhavat
4. brahmaṇyaḥ ca śaraṇyaḥ ca buddhyā ca pariniṣṭhitaḥ (āsīt).
tasya paramodāraiḥ suraiḥ ca atulā prītiḥ abhavat.
4. He was devoted to sacred knowledge (brahmaṇya), worthy of refuge, and steadfast in his intelligence. He had an incomparable affection for the exceedingly noble gods.
स मधुर्वीर्यसंपन्नो धर्मे च सुसमाहितः ।
बहुमानाच्च रुद्रेण दत्तस्तस्याद्भुतो वरः ॥५॥
5. sa madhurvīryasaṃpanno dharme ca susamāhitaḥ ,
bahumānācca rudreṇa dattastasyādbhuto varaḥ.
5. saḥ madhuḥ vīryasampannaḥ dharme ca susamāhitaḥ
bahumānāt ca rudreṇa dattaḥ tasya adbhutaḥ varaḥ
5. saḥ madhuḥ vīryasampannaḥ (āsīt) ca dharme susamāhitaḥ (āsīt).
bahumānāt ca rudreṇa adbhutaḥ varaḥ tasya dattaḥ.
5. That Madhu was endowed with valor and firmly established in his intrinsic nature (dharma). And, out of great reverence, an astonishing boon was bestowed upon him by Rudra.
शूलं शूलाद्विनिष्कृष्य महावीर्यं महाप्रभम् ।
ददौ महात्मा सुप्रीतो वाक्यं चैतदुवाच ह ॥६॥
6. śūlaṃ śūlādviniṣkṛṣya mahāvīryaṃ mahāprabham ,
dadau mahātmā suprīto vākyaṃ caitaduvāca ha.
6. śūlam śūlāt viniṣkṛṣya mahāvīryam mahāprabham
dadau mahātmā suprītaḥ vākyam ca etat uvāca ha
6. suprītaḥ mahātmā (rudraḥ) śūlāt (svīyāt) mahāvīryam mahāprabham śūlam viniṣkṛṣya (tasya) dadau ca etat vākyam uvāca ha.
6. Having extracted a very powerful and greatly radiant trident from his own trident, the very pleased, great-souled (mahātmā) Rudra gave it and spoke this statement.
त्वयायमतुलो धर्मो मत्प्रसादात् कृतः शुभः ।
प्रीत्या परमया युक्तो ददाम्यायुधमुत्तमम् ॥७॥
7. tvayāyamatulo dharmo matprasādāt kṛtaḥ śubhaḥ ,
prītyā paramayā yukto dadāmyāyudhamuttamam.
7. tvayā ayam atulaḥ dharmaḥ matprasādāt kṛtaḥ śubhaḥ
prītyā paramayā yuktaḥ dadāmi āyudham uttamam
7. tvayā matprasādāt śubhaḥ atulaḥ ayam dharmaḥ kṛtaḥ.
paramayā prītyā yuktaḥ uttamam āyudham dadāmi.
7. This incomparable righteous deed (dharma) has been performed by you auspiciously, by my grace. Filled with supreme affection, I grant you an excellent weapon.
यावत् सुरैश्च विप्रैश्च न विरुध्येर्महासुर ।
तावच्छूलं तवेदं स्यादन्यथा नाशमाप्नुयात् ॥८॥
8. yāvat suraiśca vipraiśca na virudhyermahāsura ,
tāvacchūlaṃ tavedaṃ syādanyathā nāśamāpnuyāt.
8. yāvat suraiḥ ca vipraiḥ ca na virudhyeḥ mahā-asura
tāvat śūlam tava idam syāt anyathā nāśam āpnuyāt
8. mahā-asura,
yāvat suraiḥ ca vipraiḥ ca na virudhyeḥ,
tāvat idam tava śūlam syāt; anyathā nāśam āpnuyāt.
8. As long as you do not oppose the gods and the twice-born (brāhmaṇas), O great asura, so long shall this trident be yours; otherwise, it will meet destruction.
यश्च त्वामभियुञ्जीत युद्धाय विगतज्वरः ।
तं शूलं भस्मसात् कृत्वा पुनरेष्यति ते करम् ॥९॥
9. yaśca tvāmabhiyuñjīta yuddhāya vigatajvaraḥ ,
taṃ śūlaṃ bhasmasāt kṛtvā punareṣyati te karam.
9. yaḥ ca tvām abhiyuñjīta yuddhāya vigata-jvaraḥ
tam śūlam bhasmasāt kṛtvā punaḥ eṣyati te karam
9. yaḥ ca vigata-jvaraḥ tvām yuddhāya abhiyuñjīta,
tam śūlam bhasmasāt kṛtvā punaḥ te karam eṣyati.
9. And whoever challenges you to battle, devoid of fear, that trident, having reduced him to ashes, will return to your hand.
एवं रुद्राद्वरं लब्ध्वा भूय एव महासुरः ।
प्रणिपत्य महादेवं वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ॥१०॥
10. evaṃ rudrādvaraṃ labdhvā bhūya eva mahāsuraḥ ,
praṇipatya mahādevaṃ vākyametaduvāca ha.
10. evam rudrāt varam labdhvā bhūyaḥ eva mahā-asuraḥ
praṇipatya mahādevam vākyam etat uvāca ha
10. evam rudrāt varam labdhvā,
mahā-asuraḥ bhūyaḥ eva mahādevam praṇipatya,
etat vākyam ha uvāca.
10. Thus, having obtained a boon from Rudra, the great asura, having bowed down to the Great God (mahādeva), spoke these words again.
भगवन्मम वंशस्य शूलमेतदनुत्तमम् ।
भवेत्तु सततं देव सुराणामीश्वरो ह्यसि ॥११॥
11. bhagavanmama vaṃśasya śūlametadanuttamam ,
bhavettu satataṃ deva surāṇāmīśvaro hyasi.
11. bhagavan mama vaṃśasya śūlam etat anuttamam
bhavet tu satataṃ deva surāṇām īśvaraḥ hi asi
11. bhagavan deva mama vaṃśasya etat anuttamam śūlam
satataṃ bhavet tu hi tvam surāṇām īśvaraḥ asi
11. O Lord, may this supreme spear always belong to my lineage. O God, you are indeed the lord of the gods.
तं ब्रुवाणं मधुं देवः सर्वभूतपतिः शिवः ।
प्रत्युवाच महादेवो नैतदेवं भविष्यति ॥१२॥
12. taṃ bruvāṇaṃ madhuṃ devaḥ sarvabhūtapatiḥ śivaḥ ,
pratyuvāca mahādevo naitadevaṃ bhaviṣyati.
12. tam bruvāṇam madhum devaḥ sarvabhūtapatiḥ śivaḥ
prati uvāca mahādevaḥ na etat evam bhaviṣyati
12. devaḥ sarvabhūtapatiḥ śivaḥ mahādevaḥ tam bruvāṇam
madhum prati uvāca na etat evam bhaviṣyati
12. The great god Shiva, the lord of all beings, replied to Madhu, who was speaking to him: 'This will not happen in that way.'
मा भूत्ते विफला वाणी मत्प्रसादकृता शुभा ।
भवतः पुत्रमेकं तु शूलमेतद्गमिष्यति ॥१३॥
13. mā bhūtte viphalā vāṇī matprasādakṛtā śubhā ,
bhavataḥ putramekaṃ tu śūlametadgamiṣyati.
13. mā bhūt te viphalā vāṇī mat prasādakṛtā śubhā
bhavataḥ putram ekam tu śūlam etat gamiṣyati
13. te mat prasādakṛtā śubhā vāṇī mā viphalā bhūt
tu bhavataḥ ekam putram etat śūlam gamiṣyati
13. May your auspicious request, made by my grace, not be fruitless. However, this spear will go to one son of yours.
यावत् करस्थः शूलो ऽयं भविष्यति सुतस्य ते ।
अवध्यः सर्वभूतानां शूलहस्तो भविष्यति ॥१४॥
14. yāvat karasthaḥ śūlo'yaṃ bhaviṣyati sutasya te ,
avadhyaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ śūlahasto bhaviṣyati.
14. yāvat karasthaḥ śūlaḥ ayam bhaviṣyati sutasya
te avadhyaḥ sarvabhūtānām śūlahastaḥ bhaviṣyati
14. yāvat ayam śūlaḥ te sutasya karasthaḥ bhaviṣyati
śūlahastaḥ sarvabhūtānām avadhyaḥ bhaviṣyati
14. As long as this spear remains in the hand of your son, the one holding the spear will be invulnerable to all beings.
एवं मधुर्वरं लब्ध्वा देवात् सुमहदद्भुतम् ।
भवनं चासुरश्रेष्ठः कारयामास सुप्रभम् ॥१५॥
15. evaṃ madhurvaraṃ labdhvā devāt sumahadadbhutam ,
bhavanaṃ cāsuraśreṣṭhaḥ kārayāmāsa suprabham.
15. evam madhuḥ varam labdhvā devāt sumahat adbhutam
bhavanam ca asuraśreṣṭhaḥ kārayāmāsa suprabham
15. evam asuraśreṣṭhaḥ madhuḥ devāt sumahat adbhutam
varam labdhvā ca suprabham bhavanam kārayāmāsa
15. In this way, Madhu, the foremost among the asuras, having received a very great and wonderful boon from a god, caused a magnificent palace to be built.
तस्य पत्नी महाभागा प्रिया कुम्भीनसी हि या ।
विश्वावसोरपत्यं सा ह्यनलायां महाप्रभा ॥१६॥
16. tasya patnī mahābhāgā priyā kumbhīnasī hi yā ,
viśvāvasorapatyaṃ sā hyanalāyāṃ mahāprabhā.
16. tasya patnī mahābhāgā priyā kumbhīnasī hi yā
viśvāvasoḥ apatyam sā hi analāyām mahāprabhā
16. tasya mahābhāgā priyā patnī kumbhīnasī hi yā
sā hi viśvāvasoḥ analāyām apatyam mahāprabhā
16. His highly esteemed and beloved wife was Kumbhīnasi, who was indeed the illustrious child of Viśvāvasu from Anala.
तस्याः पुत्रो महावीर्यो लवणो नाम दारुणः ।
बाल्यात् प्रभृति दुष्टात्मा पापान्येव समाचरत् ॥१७॥
17. tasyāḥ putro mahāvīryo lavaṇo nāma dāruṇaḥ ,
bālyāt prabhṛti duṣṭātmā pāpānyeva samācarat.
17. tasyāḥ putraḥ mahāvīryaḥ lavaṇaḥ nāma dāruṇaḥ
bālyāt prabhṛti duṣṭātmā pāpāni eva samācarat
17. tasyāḥ putraḥ lavaṇaḥ nāma mahāvīryaḥ dāruṇaḥ
duṣṭātmā bālyāt prabhṛti pāpāni eva samācarat
17. Her son, named Lavana, was exceedingly mighty and terrible. From his childhood, that wicked soul (ātman) consistently committed only sinful deeds.
तं पुत्रं दुर्विनीतं तु दृष्ट्वा दुःखसमन्वितः ।
मधुः स शोकमापेदे न चैनं किं चिदब्रवीत् ॥१८॥
18. taṃ putraṃ durvinītaṃ tu dṛṣṭvā duḥkhasamanvitaḥ ,
madhuḥ sa śokamāpede na cainaṃ kiṃ cidabravīt.
18. tam putram durvinītam tu dṛṣṭvā duḥkhasamanvitaḥ
madhuḥ saḥ śokam āpede na ca enam kim cit abravīt
18. tu tam durvinītam putram dṛṣṭvā duḥkhasamanvitaḥ
saḥ madhuḥ śokam āpede ca enam kim cit na abravīt
18. But having seen that ill-behaved son, Madhu, filled with sorrow, was overcome with grief, and he said nothing to him.
स विहाय इमं लोकं प्रविष्टो वरुणालयम् ।
शूलं निवेश्य लवणे वरं तस्मै न्यवेदयत् ॥१९॥
19. sa vihāya imaṃ lokaṃ praviṣṭo varuṇālayam ,
śūlaṃ niveśya lavaṇe varaṃ tasmai nyavedayat.
19. sa vihāya imam lokam praviṣṭaḥ varuṇālayam
śūlam niveśya lavaṇe varam tasmai nyavedayat
19. sa imam lokam vihāya varuṇālayam praviṣṭaḥ
śūlam lavaṇe niveśya tasmai varam nyavedayat
19. He, having left this realm, entered the abode of Varuṇa. Having bestowed the trident (śūla) upon Lavaṇa, he then granted him a boon.
स प्रभावेन शूलस्य दौरात्म्येनात्मनस्तथा ।
संतापयति लोकांस्त्रीन् विशेषेण तु तापसान् ॥२०॥
20. sa prabhāvena śūlasya daurātmyenātmanastathā ,
saṃtāpayati lokāṃstrīn viśeṣeṇa tu tāpasān.
20. sa prabhāveṇa śūlasya daurātmyeṇa ātmanaḥ tathā
santāpayati lokān trīn viśeṣeṇa tu tāpasān
20. sa śūlasya prabhāveṇa tathā ātmanaḥ daurātmyeṇa trīn lokān santāpayati,
viśeṣeṇa tu tāpasān
20. By the power of the trident (śūla) and by his own wickedness (ātman), he torments the three worlds, and especially the ascetics.
एवंप्रभावो लवणः शूलं चैव तथाविधम् ।
श्रुत्वा प्रमाणं काकुत्स्थ त्वं हि नः परमा गतिः ॥२१॥
21. evaṃprabhāvo lavaṇaḥ śūlaṃ caiva tathāvidham ,
śrutvā pramāṇaṃ kākutstha tvaṃ hi naḥ paramā gatiḥ.
21. evaṃprabhāvaḥ lavaṇaḥ śūlam ca eva tathāvidham
śrutvā pramāṇam kākutstha tvam hi naḥ paramā gatiḥ
21. kākutstha,
evaṃprabhāvaḥ lavaṇaḥ ca eva tathāvidham śūlam śrutvā,
tvam hi naḥ paramā gatiḥ (asi)
21. O scion of Kakutstha, having heard of Lavaṇa's great power and of the trident (śūla) being of such a nature, you are indeed our supreme refuge.
बहवः पार्थिवा राम भयार्तैरृषिभिः पुरा ।
अभयं याचिता वीर त्रातारं न च विद्महे ॥२२॥
22. bahavaḥ pārthivā rāma bhayārtairṛṣibhiḥ purā ,
abhayaṃ yācitā vīra trātāraṃ na ca vidmahe.
22. bahavaḥ pārthivāḥ rāma bhayārtaiḥ ṛṣibhiḥ purā
abhayam yācitā vīra trātāram na ca vidmahe
22. rāma vīra,
purā bhayārtaiḥ ṛṣibhiḥ bahavaḥ pārthivāḥ abhayam yācitāḥ,
ca (tathāpi) trātāram na vidmahe
22. O Rāma, O hero, many kings were formerly implored for protection (abhaya) by sages distressed by fear, yet we know of no (such) protector.
ते वयं रावणं श्रुत्वा हतं सबलवाहनम् ।
त्रातारं विद्महे राम नान्यं भुवि नराधिपम् ।
तत् परित्रातुमिच्छामो लवणाद्भयपीडिताः ॥२३॥
23. te vayaṃ rāvaṇaṃ śrutvā hataṃ sabalavāhanam ,
trātāraṃ vidmahe rāma nānyaṃ bhuvi narādhipam ,
tat paritrātumicchāmo lavaṇādbhayapīḍitāḥ.
23. te vayam rāvaṇam śrutvā hatam
sabalavāhanam trātāram vidmahe rāma na
anyam bhuvi narādhipam tat paritrātum
icchāmaḥ lavaṇāt bhayapīḍitāḥ
23. Having heard that Rāvaṇa was killed along with his army and vehicles, we know, O Rāma, that you are our protector; there is no other king on earth like you. Therefore, tormented by fear, we wish to be protected from Lavaṇa.
