तच्छ्रुत्वा लक्ष्मणेनोक्तं वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदः ।
प्रत्युवाच महातेजाः प्रहसन् राघवो वचः ॥१॥
1. tacchrutvā lakṣmaṇenoktaṃ vākyaṃ vākyaviśāradaḥ ,

1. The greatly refulgent Rāma, an expert in speech, smiled and replied to that statement spoken by Lakṣmaṇa.
एवमेतन्नरश्रेष्ठ यथा वदसि लक्ष्मण ।
वृत्रघातमशेषेण वाजिमेधफलं च यत् ॥२॥
2. evametannaraśreṣṭha yathā vadasi lakṣmaṇa ,
vṛtraghātamaśeṣeṇa vājimedhaphalaṃ ca yat.
2. evam etat naraśreṣṭha yathā vadasi lakṣmaṇa
vṛtraghātam aśeṣeṇa vājimedhaphalam ca yat
2. lakṣmaṇa naraśreṣṭha,
etat evam yathā vadasi,
(tat) vṛtraghātam aśeṣeṇa vājimedhaphalam ca yat (asti)
2. This is indeed so, O Lakṣmaṇa, best among men, just as you say. The complete slaying of Vṛtra and the entire fruit of the horse (Vedic) ritual (vājimedha) (are comparable).
श्रूयते हि पुरा सौम्य कर्दमस्य प्रजापतेः ।
पुत्रो बाह्लीश्वरः श्रीमानिलो नाम सुधार्मिकः ॥३॥
3. śrūyate hi purā saumya kardamasya prajāpateḥ ,
putro bāhlīśvaraḥ śrīmānilo nāma sudhārmikaḥ.

3. Indeed, O gentle one, it is heard that in ancient times, Prajāpati Kardama had a glorious and extremely righteous son named Ila, who was the lord of Bāhlī.
स राजा पृथिवीं सर्वां वशे कृत्वा महायशाः ।
राज्यं चैव नरव्याघ्र पुत्रवत् पर्यपालयत् ॥४॥
4. sa rājā pṛthivīṃ sarvāṃ vaśe kṛtvā mahāyaśāḥ ,
rājyaṃ caiva naravyāghra putravat paryapālayat.

4. That glorious king (Ila), O tiger among men, having brought the entire earth under his control, then indeed ruled the kingdom as if it were his own son.
सुरैश्च परमोदारैर्दैतेयैश्च महासुरैः ।
नागराक्षसगन्धर्वैर्यक्षैश्च सुमहात्मभिः ॥५॥
5. suraiśca paramodārairdaiteyaiśca mahāsuraiḥ ,
nāgarākṣasagandharvairyakṣaiśca sumahātmabhiḥ.
5. suraiḥ ca paramodāraiḥ daiteyaiḥ ca mahāsuraiḥ
nāgarākṣasagandharvaiḥ yakṣaiḥ ca sumahātmabhiḥ
5. And he is worshipped by the extremely noble gods, and by the great demons, by nāgas, rākṣasas, gandharvas, and by the very great-souled yakṣas.
पूज्यते नित्यशः सौम्य भयार्तै रघुनन्दन ।
अबिभ्यंश्च त्रयो लोकाः सरोषस्य महात्मनः ॥६॥
6. pūjyate nityaśaḥ saumya bhayārtai raghunandana ,
abibhyaṃśca trayo lokāḥ saroṣasya mahātmanaḥ.
6. pūjyate nityaśaḥ saumya bhayārtaiḥ raghunandana
abibhyan ca trayaḥ lokāḥ saroṣasya mahā-ātmanaḥ
6. O gentle Raghu's descendant, he is worshipped daily by those afflicted by fear. And the three worlds do not fear that great-souled one who is filled with anger.
स राजा तादृशो ह्यासीद्धर्मे वीर्ये च निष्ठितः ।
बुद्ध्या च परमोदारो बाह्लीकानां महायशाः ॥७॥
7. sa rājā tādṛśo hyāsīddharme vīrye ca niṣṭhitaḥ ,
buddhyā ca paramodāro bāhlīkānāṃ mahāyaśāḥ.
7. sa rājā tādṛśaḥ hi āsīt dharme vīrye ca niṣṭhitaḥ
buddhyā ca paramodāraḥ bāhlīkānām mahāyaśāḥ
7. That king was indeed such a one, firmly established in his intrinsic nature (dharma) and valor. He was also supremely noble in intellect and highly renowned among the Bāhlīkas.
स प्रचक्रे महाबाहुर्मृगयां रुचिरे वने ।
चैत्रे मनोरमे मासि सभृत्यबलवाहनः ॥८॥
8. sa pracakre mahābāhurmṛgayāṃ rucire vane ,
caitre manorame māsi sabhṛtyabalavāhanaḥ.

caitre manorame māsi sabhṛtyabalavāhanaḥ
8. That mighty-armed one undertook a hunt in a beautiful forest in the delightful month of Caitra, accompanied by his servants, army, and vehicles.
प्रजघ्ने स नृपो ऽरण्ये मृगाञ् शतसहस्रशः ।
हत्वैव तृप्तिर्नाभूच्च राज्ञस्तस्य महात्मनः ॥९॥
9. prajaghne sa nṛpo'raṇye mṛgāñ śatasahasraśaḥ ,
hatvaiva tṛptirnābhūcca rājñastasya mahātmanaḥ.
9. prajaghne sa nṛpaḥ araṇye mṛgān śatasahasraśaḥ
hatvā eva tṛptiḥ na abhūt ca rājñaḥ tasya mahātmanaḥ
9. sa nṛpaḥ araṇye śatasahasraśaḥ mṛgān prajaghne.
hatvā eva ca tasya mahātmanaḥ rājñaḥ tṛptiḥ na abhūt.
9. That king killed hundreds of thousands of animals in the forest. Even after such extensive killing, that great-souled king did not find satisfaction.
नानामृगाणामयुतं वध्यमानं महात्मना ।
यत्र जातो महासेनस्तं देशमुपचक्रमे ॥१०॥
10. nānāmṛgāṇāmayutaṃ vadhyamānaṃ mahātmanā ,
yatra jāto mahāsenastaṃ deśamupacakrame.
10. nānāmṛgāṇām ayutam vadhyamānam mahātmanā
yatra jātaḥ mahāsenaḥ tam deśam upacakrame
10. mahātmanā nānāmṛgāṇām ayutam vadhyamānam,
yatra mahāsenaḥ jātaḥ,
tam deśam upacakrame.
10. The great-souled (king) approached that region where ten thousand various animals were being killed, and where Mahāsena was born.
तस्मिंस्तु देवदेवेशः शैलराजसुतां हरः ।
रमयामास दुर्धर्षैः सर्वैरनुचरैः सह ॥११॥
11. tasmiṃstu devadeveśaḥ śailarājasutāṃ haraḥ ,
ramayāmāsa durdharṣaiḥ sarvairanucaraiḥ saha.
11. tasmin tu devadeveśaḥ śailarājasutām haraḥ
ramayāmāsa durdharṣaiḥ sarvaiḥ anucaraiḥ saha
11. tasmin tu,
devadeveśaḥ haraḥ,
durdharṣaiḥ sarvaiḥ anucaraiḥ saha,
śailarājasutām ramayāmāsa.
11. But in that place, Hara (Śiva), the lord of lords among the gods, dallied with the daughter of the king of mountains (Pārvatī), accompanied by all his irresistible attendants.
कृत्वा स्त्रीभूतमात्मानमुमेशो गोपतिध्वजः ।
देव्याः प्रियचिकीर्षुः स तस्मिन्पर्वतनिर्झरे ॥१२॥
12. kṛtvā strībhūtamātmānamumeśo gopatidhvajaḥ ,
devyāḥ priyacikīrṣuḥ sa tasminparvatanirjhare.
12. kṛtvā strībhūtam ātmānam umeśaḥ gopatidhvajaḥ
devyāḥ priyacikīrṣuḥ sa tasmin parvatanirjhare
12. sa umeśaḥ gopatidhvajaḥ devyāḥ priyacikīrṣuḥ,
ātmānam strībhūtam kṛtvā,
tasmin parvatanirjhare (āsīt).
12. Having transformed himself into a female form, Uma's lord (Śiva), whose banner is the bull, desiring to please the goddess, (was) in that mountain waterfall.
ये च तत्र वनोद्देशे सत्त्वाः पुरुषवादिनः ।
यच्च किं चन तत् सर्वं नारीसंज्ञं बभूव ह ॥१३॥
13. ye ca tatra vanoddeśe sattvāḥ puruṣavādinaḥ ,
yacca kiṃ cana tat sarvaṃ nārīsaṃjñaṃ babhūva ha.
13. ye ca tatra vanoddeśe sattvāḥ puruṣavādinaḥ yat
ca kim cana tat sarvam nārīsaṃjñam babhūva ha
13. tatra vanoddeśe ye ca puruṣavādinaḥ sattvāḥ yat
ca kim cana tat sarvam nārīsaṃjñam babhūva ha
13. And all the beings (sattvāḥ) in that forest region who identified themselves as men, along with anything else present there, indeed became designated as 'female'.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे राजा स इलः कर्दमात्मजः ।
निघ्नन्मृगसहस्राणि तं देशमुपचक्रमे ॥१४॥
14. etasminnantare rājā sa ilaḥ kardamātmajaḥ ,
nighnanmṛgasahasrāṇi taṃ deśamupacakrame.
14. etasmin antare rājā sa ilaḥ kardamātmajaḥ
nighnan mṛgasahasrāṇi tam deśam upacakrame
14. etasmin antare saḥ kardamātmajaḥ rājā ilaḥ
mṛgasahasrāṇi nighnan tam deśam upacakrame
14. At that very moment, King Ila, the son of Kardama, while slaying thousands of deer, approached that region.
स दृष्ट्वा स्त्रीकृतं सर्वं सव्यालमृगपक्षिणम् ।
आत्मानं सानुगं चैव स्त्रीभूतं रघुनन्दन ॥१५॥
15. sa dṛṣṭvā strīkṛtaṃ sarvaṃ savyālamṛgapakṣiṇam ,
ātmānaṃ sānugaṃ caiva strībhūtaṃ raghunandana.
15. sa dṛṣṭvā strīkṛtam sarvam savyālamṛgapakṣiṇam
ātmānam sānugam ca eva strībhūtam raghunandana
15. raghunandana saḥ savyālamṛgapakṣiṇam sarvam strīkṛtam dṛṣṭvā,
ātmānam sānugam ca eva strībhūtam [dṛṣṭvā]
15. O descendant of Raghu (raghunandana), he, upon seeing everything - including wild animals, deer, and birds - transformed into females, and his own self (ātman) along with his followers also turned into females...
तस्य दुःखं महत्त्वासीद्दृष्ट्वात्मानं तथा गतम् ।
उमापतेश्च तत् कर्म ज्ञात्वा त्रासमुपागमत् ॥१६॥
16. tasya duḥkhaṃ mahattvāsīddṛṣṭvātmānaṃ tathā gatam ,
umāpateśca tat karma jñātvā trāsamupāgamat.
16. tasya duḥkham mahat ca āsīt dṛṣṭvā ātmānam tathā
gatam umāpateḥ ca tat karma jñātvā trāsam upāgamat
16. tasya ātmānam tathā gatam dṛṣṭvā mahat duḥkham ca
āsīt umāpateḥ tat karma ca jñātvā trāsam upāgamat
16. Great sorrow (duḥkham) came upon him when he saw his own self (ātman) in such a state; and knowing that action (karma) to be of Umāpati (Śiva), he became overcome with fear.
ततो देवं महात्मानं शितिकण्ठं कपर्दिनम् ।
जगाम शरणं राजा सभृत्यबलवाहनः ॥१७॥
17. tato devaṃ mahātmānaṃ śitikaṇṭhaṃ kapardinam ,
jagāma śaraṇaṃ rājā sabhṛtyabalavāhanaḥ.
17. tataḥ devam mahātmānam śitikaṇṭham kapardinam
jagāma śaraṇam rājā sabhṛtyabalavāhanaḥ
17. tataḥ sabhṛtyabalavāhanaḥ rājā mahātmānam
śitikaṇṭham kapardinam devam śaraṇam jagāma
17. Then the king, along with his servants, army, and vehicles, sought refuge with the great-souled god, the blue-throated one with matted hair.
ततः प्रहस्य वरदः सह देव्या महायशाः ।
प्रजापतिसुतं वाक्यमुवाच वरदः स्वयम् ॥१८॥
18. tataḥ prahasya varadaḥ saha devyā mahāyaśāḥ ,
prajāpatisutaṃ vākyamuvāca varadaḥ svayam.
18. tataḥ prahasya varadaḥ saha devyā mahāyaśāḥ
prajāpatisutam vākyam uvāca varadaḥ svayam
18. tataḥ mahāyaśāḥ varadaḥ saha devyā prahasya
svayam prajāpatisutam vākyam uvāca varadaḥ
18. Then, the renowned giver of boons (Śiva), accompanied by the goddess (Pārvatī), laughed and personally spoke these words to the son of Prajāpati.
उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ राजर्षे कार्दमेय महाबल ।
पुरुषत्वमृते सौम्य वरं वरय सुव्रत ॥१९॥
19. uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha rājarṣe kārdameya mahābala ,
puruṣatvamṛte saumya varaṃ varaya suvrata.
19. uttiṣṭha uttiṣṭha rājarṣe kārdameya mahābala
puruṣatvam ṛte saumya varam varaya suvrata
19. rājarṣe kārdameya mahābala saumya suvrata uttiṣṭha
uttiṣṭha! puruṣatvam ṛte (sarvam) varam varaya
19. Rise, rise, O royal sage, O son of Kardama, O mighty one! O gentle one, O one of excellent vows, choose any boon except for manhood.
ततः स राजा शोकार्ताः प्रत्याख्यातो महात्मना ।
न स जग्राह स्त्रीभूतो वरमन्यं सुरोत्तमात् ॥२०॥
20. tataḥ sa rājā śokārtāḥ pratyākhyāto mahātmanā ,
na sa jagrāha strībhūto varamanyaṃ surottamāt.
20. tataḥ sa rājā śokārtaḥ pratyākhyātaḥ mahātmanā
na sa jagrāha strībhūtaḥ varam anyam surottamāt
20. tataḥ śokārtaḥ strībhūtaḥ sa rājā mahātmanā pratyākhyātaḥ (san),
sa surottamāt anyam varam na jagrāha
20. Then that king, afflicted by sorrow and having become a woman, was rejected by the great-souled one (Śiva), and he did not accept any other boon from the best of gods.
ततः शोकेन महता शैलराजसुतां नृपः ।
प्रणिपत्य महादेवीं सर्वेणैवान्तरात्मना ॥२१॥
21. tataḥ śokena mahatā śailarājasutāṃ nṛpaḥ ,
praṇipatya mahādevīṃ sarveṇaivāntarātmanā.
21. tataḥ śokena mahatā śailarājasutām nṛpaḥ
praṇipatya mahādevīm sarveṇa eva antarātmanā
21. tataḥ nṛpaḥ mahatā śokena sarveṇa eva
antarātmanā śailarājasutām mahādevīm praṇipatya
21. Then, overwhelmed by great sorrow, the king bowed down to Mahādevī, the daughter of the king of mountains, with his entire inner self (antarātman).
ईशे वराणां वरदे लोकानामसि भामिनि ।
अमोघदर्शने देवि भजे सौम्ये नमो ऽस्तु ते ॥२२॥
22. īśe varāṇāṃ varade lokānāmasi bhāmini ,
amoghadarśane devi bhaje saumye namo'stu te.

amoghadarśane devi bhaje saumye namaḥ astu te
22. varade bhāmini devi amoghadarśane saumye
varāṇām lokānām īśe asi bhaje te namaḥ astu
22. O giver of boons, O resplendent one, you are the mistress of boons and of the worlds. O Goddess, whose sight is unfailing, O gentle one, I worship you. Salutations to you!
हृद्गतं तस्य राजर्षेर्विज्ञाय हरसंनिधौ ।
प्रत्युवाच शुभं वाक्यं देवी रुद्रस्य संमता ॥२३॥
23. hṛdgataṃ tasya rājarṣervijñāya harasaṃnidhau ,
pratyuvāca śubhaṃ vākyaṃ devī rudrasya saṃmatā.
23. hṛdgatam tasya rājarṣeḥ vijñāya harasaṃnidhau
pratyuvāca śubham vākyam devī rudrasya saṃmatā
23. devī rudrasya saṃmatā harasaṃnidhau tasya rājarṣeḥ
hṛdgatam vijñāya śubham vākyam pratyuvāca
23. Having understood the inner thought of that royal sage (rājarṣi) in Hara's (Śiva's) presence, the Goddess (devī), esteemed by Rudra, replied with auspicious words.
अर्धस्य देवो वरदो वरार्धस्य तथा ह्यहम् ।
तस्मादर्धं गृहाण त्वं स्त्रीपुंसोर्यावदिच्छसि ॥२४॥
24. ardhasya devo varado varārdhasya tathā hyaham ,
tasmādardhaṃ gṛhāṇa tvaṃ strīpuṃsoryāvadicchasi.
24. ardhasya devaḥ varadaḥ varārdhasya tathā hi aham
tasmāt ardham gṛhāṇa tvam strīpuṃsoḥ yāvat icchasi
24. devaḥ varadaḥ ardhasya tathā hi aham varārdhasya
tasmāt tvam strīpuṃsoḥ yāvat icchasi ardham gṛhāṇa
24. The god (deva) is the bestower of half the boons, and similarly, I am the bestower of the other half. Therefore, take as much of the share (ardham) of progeny (strīpuṃsoḥ) as you desire.
तदद्भुततमं श्रुत्वा देव्या वरमनुत्तमम् ।
संप्रहृष्टमना भूत्वा राजा वाक्यमथाब्रवीत् ॥२५॥
25. tadadbhutatamaṃ śrutvā devyā varamanuttamam ,
saṃprahṛṣṭamanā bhūtvā rājā vākyamathābravīt.
25. tad adbhutatamam śrutvā devyāḥ varam anuttamam
samprahṛṣṭamanāḥ bhūtvā rājā vākyam atha abravīt
25. rājā devyāḥ adbhutatamam anuttamam varam śrutvā
samprahṛṣṭamanāḥ bhūtvā atha vākyam abravīt
25. When the king heard that most wonderful, unsurpassed boon from the goddess, he became exceedingly joyful in mind and then spoke these words.
यदि देवि प्रसन्ना मे रूपेणाप्रतिमा भुवि ।
मासं स्त्रीत्वमुपासित्वा मासं स्यां पुरुषः पुनः ॥२६॥
26. yadi devi prasannā me rūpeṇāpratimā bhuvi ,
māsaṃ strītvamupāsitvā māsaṃ syāṃ puruṣaḥ punaḥ.
26. yadi devi prasannā me rūpeṇa apratimā bhuvi
māsam strītvam upāsitvā māsam syām puruṣaḥ punaḥ
26. devi,
yadi tvam bhuvi rūpeṇa apratimā me prasannā (asi),
(tarhi) māsam strītvam upāsitvā punaḥ māsam puruṣaḥ syām
26. O goddess, if you, unparalleled in form on earth, are pleased with me, then, after experiencing womanhood for one month, may I become a man again for another month.
ईप्सितं तस्य विज्ञाय देवी सुरुचिरानना ।
प्रत्युवाच शुभं वाक्यमेवमेतद्भविष्यति ॥२७॥
27. īpsitaṃ tasya vijñāya devī surucirānanā ,
pratyuvāca śubhaṃ vākyamevametadbhaviṣyati.
27. īpsitam tasya vijñāya devī surucirānanā
pratyuvāca śubham vākyam evam etat bhaviṣyati
27. sūrucirānanā devī tasya īpsitam vijñāya śubham vākyam pratyuvāca,
"evam etat bhaviṣyati"
27. Understanding his desire, the beautiful-faced goddess replied with auspicious words: "This shall be so."
राजन्पुरुषभूतस्त्वं स्त्रीभावं न स्मरिष्यसि ।
स्त्रीभूतश्चापरं मासं न स्मरिष्यसि पौरुषम् ॥२८॥
28. rājanpuruṣabhūtastvaṃ strībhāvaṃ na smariṣyasi ,
strībhūtaścāparaṃ māsaṃ na smariṣyasi pauruṣam.
28. rājan puruṣabhūtaḥ tvam strībhāvam na smariṣyasi
strībhūtaḥ ca aparam māsam na smariṣyasi pauruṣam
28. rājan,
tvam puruṣabhūtaḥ strībhāvam na smariṣyasi; ca aparam māsam strībhūtaḥ (san) pauruṣam na smariṣyasi
28. O king, when you are a man, you will not remember your female state. And when you are a woman in the alternate month, you will not remember your male state.
एवं स राजा पुरुषो मामं भूत्वाथ कार्दमिः ।
त्रैलोक्यसुन्दरी नारी मासमेकमिलाभवत् ॥२९॥
29. evaṃ sa rājā puruṣo māmaṃ bhūtvātha kārdamiḥ ,
trailokyasundarī nārī māsamekamilābhavat.
29. evam saḥ rājā puruṣaḥ māmam bhūtvā atha kārdamiḥ
trailokyasundarī nārī māsam ekam ilā abhavat
29. evam saḥ rājā kārdamiḥ puruṣaḥ māmam bhūtvā atha
trailokyasundarī nārī māsam ekam ilā abhavat
29. Thus, that king, the son of Kardama, being a man, transformed into a female form; then, for one month, he became Ilā, a woman beautiful throughout the three worlds.
