खरं तु विरथं रामो गदापाणिमवस्थितम् ।
मृदुपूर्वं महातेजाः परुषं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१॥

1. Then, the greatly radiant Rāma addressed Khara, who was chariotless and stood with a mace in hand, first with gentle words, and then with harsh speech.
गजाश्वरथसंबाधे बले महति तिष्ठता ।
कृतं सुदारुणं कर्म सर्वलोकजुगुप्सितम् ॥२॥
2. gajāśvarathasaṃbādhe bale mahati tiṣṭhatā ,
kṛtaṃ sudāruṇaṃ karma sarvalokajugupsitam.

2. While standing amidst a vast army, crowded with elephants, horses, and chariots, an extremely cruel act (karma) was performed, which is detested by all people.
उद्वेजनीयो भूतानां नृशंसः पापकर्मकृत् ।
त्रयाणामपि लोकानामीश्वरो ऽपि न तिष्ठति ॥३॥
3. udvejanīyo bhūtānāṃ nṛśaṃsaḥ pāpakarmakṛt ,
trayāṇāmapi lokānāmīśvaro'pi na tiṣṭhati.
3. udvejanīyaḥ bhūtānām nṛśaṃsaḥ pāpakarmakṛt
trayāṇām api lokānām īśvaraḥ api na tiṣṭhati
3. bhūtānām udvejanīyaḥ nṛśaṃsaḥ pāpakarmakṛt

3. A cruel person who performs evil deeds (karma) and causes distress to all beings will not endure, even if they were the lord (īśvara) of the three worlds.
कर्म लोकविरुद्धं तु कुर्वाणं क्षणदाचर ।
तीक्ष्णं सर्वजनो हन्ति सर्पं दुष्टमिवागतम् ॥४॥
4. karma lokaviruddhaṃ tu kurvāṇaṃ kṣaṇadācara ,
tīkṣṇaṃ sarvajano hanti sarpaṃ duṣṭamivāgatam.

tīkṣṇam sarvajanaḥ hanti sarpam duṣṭam iva āgatam
4. kṣaṇadācara,
tu lokaviruddham tīkṣṇam karma kurvāṇam sarvajanaḥ duṣṭam āgatam sarpam iva hanti
4. O night-wanderer, indeed, when a person performs an action (karma) that is contrary to social norms and is cruel, everyone kills them, just as one kills a venomous, wicked snake that has appeared.
लोभात् पापानि कुर्वाणः कामाद्वा यो न बुध्यते ।
भ्रष्टः पश्यति तस्यान्तं ब्राह्मणी करकादिव ॥५॥
5. lobhāt pāpāni kurvāṇaḥ kāmādvā yo na budhyate ,
bhraṣṭaḥ paśyati tasyāntaṃ brāhmaṇī karakādiva.
5. lobhāt pāpāni kurvāṇaḥ kāmāt vā yaḥ na budhyate
bhraṣṭaḥ paśyati tasya antam brāhmaṇī karakāt iva
5. yaḥ lobhāt vā kāmāt pāpāni kurvāṇaḥ na budhyate,
bhraṣṭaḥ tasya antam brāhmaṇī karakāt iva paśyati
5. He who, performing sinful acts (karma) out of greed or desire, remains oblivious, that fallen person will see his end, just as a brahmin woman faces destruction from a hailstone.
वसतो दण्डकारण्ये तापसान्धर्मचारिणः ।
किं नु हत्वा महाभागान्फलं प्राप्स्यसि राक्षस ॥६॥
6. vasato daṇḍakāraṇye tāpasāndharmacāriṇaḥ ,
kiṃ nu hatvā mahābhāgānphalaṃ prāpsyasi rākṣasa.
6. vasataḥ daṇḍakāraṇye tāpasān dharmacāriṇaḥ kim
nu hatvā mahābhāgān phalam prāpsyasi rākṣasa
6. rākṣasa! daṇḍakāraṇye vasataḥ dharmacāriṇaḥ
mahābhāgān tāpasān hatvā nu kim phalam prāpsyasi?
6. O demon, what outcome will you achieve by killing the greatly virtuous ascetics who dwell in the Daṇḍaka forest and practice righteousness (dharma)?
न चिरं पापकर्माणः क्रूरा लोकजुगुप्सिताः ।
ऐश्वर्यं प्राप्य तिष्ठन्ति शीर्णमूला इव द्रुमाः ॥७॥
7. na ciraṃ pāpakarmāṇaḥ krūrā lokajugupsitāḥ ,
aiśvaryaṃ prāpya tiṣṭhanti śīrṇamūlā iva drumāḥ.
7. na ciram pāpakarmāṇaḥ krūrāḥ lokajugupsitāḥ
aiśvaryam prāpya tiṣṭhanti śīrṇamūlāḥ iva drumāḥ
7. pāpakarmāṇaḥ krūrāḥ lokajugupsitāḥ aiśvaryam prāpya śīrṇamūlāḥ drumāḥ iva ciram na tiṣṭhanti.
7. Those who commit evil deeds (karma), who are cruel and scorned by people, do not long retain their power (aiśvarya) after attaining it, just like trees whose roots have withered.
अवश्यं लभते कर्ता फलं पापस्य कर्मणः ।
घोरं पर्यागते काले द्रुमः पुष्पमिवार्तवम् ॥८॥
8. avaśyaṃ labhate kartā phalaṃ pāpasya karmaṇaḥ ,
ghoraṃ paryāgate kāle drumaḥ puṣpamivārtavam.
8. avaśyam labhate kartā phalam pāpasya karmaṇaḥ
ghoram paryāgate kāle drumaḥ puṣpam iva ārtavam
8. kartā pāpasya karmaṇaḥ ghorem phalam avaśyam labhate,
paryāgate kāle drumaḥ ārtavam puṣpam iva (labhate).
8. The perpetrator of a sinful action (karma) inevitably reaps the terrible consequence (phala) when the appointed time (kāla) arrives, just as a tree produces its seasonal blossoms.
नचिरात् प्राप्यते लोके पापानां कर्मणां फलम् ।
सविषाणामिवान्नानां भुक्तानां क्षणदाचर ॥९॥
9. nacirāt prāpyate loke pāpānāṃ karmaṇāṃ phalam ,
saviṣāṇāmivānnānāṃ bhuktānāṃ kṣaṇadācara.
9. nacirāt prāpyate loke pāpānām karmaṇām phalam
saviṣāṇām iva annānām bhuktānām kṣaṇadācara
9. kṣaṇadācara,
loke pāpānām karmaṇām phalam bhuktānām saviṣāṇām annānām iva nacirāt prāpyate.
9. O night-prowler, the consequence (phala) of evil deeds (karma) is realized in this world without delay, just like poisoned food (anna) that has been consumed.
पापमाच्चरतां घोरं लोकस्याप्रियमिच्छताम् ।
अहमासादितो राजा प्राणान् हन्तुं निशाचर ॥१०॥
10. pāpamāccaratāṃ ghoraṃ lokasyāpriyamicchatām ,
ahamāsādito rājā prāṇān hantuṃ niśācara.
10. pāpam ācaratām ghoram lokasya apriyam icchātām
aham āsāditaḥ rājā prāṇān hantum niśācara
10. niśācara ghoram pāpam ācaratām lokasya apriyam
icchātām aham rājā prāṇān hantum āsāditaḥ
10. O night-roamer (niśācara), you who commit terrible sins and desire the harm of the world, have now encountered me, the king, ready to take your life.
अद्य हि त्वां मया मुक्ताः शराः काञ्चनभूषणाः ।
विदार्य निपतिष्यन्ति वल्मीकमिव पन्नगाः ॥११॥
11. adya hi tvāṃ mayā muktāḥ śarāḥ kāñcanabhūṣaṇāḥ ,
vidārya nipatiṣyanti valmīkamiva pannagāḥ.
11. adya hi tvām mayā muktāḥ śarāḥ kāñcanabhūṣaṇāḥ
vidārya nipatiṣyanti valmīkam iva pannagāḥ
11. hi adya mayā muktāḥ kāñcanabhūṣaṇāḥ śarāḥ tvām vidārya nipatiṣyanti,
pannagāḥ valmīkam iva
11. Indeed, today, the gold-adorned arrows released by me will pierce and strike you down, just as snakes descend upon an anthill.
ये त्वया दण्डकारण्ये भक्षिता धर्मचारिणः ।
तानद्य निहतः संख्ये ससैन्यो ऽनुगमिष्यसि ॥१२॥
12. ye tvayā daṇḍakāraṇye bhakṣitā dharmacāriṇaḥ ,
tānadya nihataḥ saṃkhye sasainyo'nugamiṣyasi.
12. ye tvayā daṇḍakāraṇye bhakṣitāḥ dharmacāriṇaḥ
tān adya nihataḥ saṅkhye sasainyaḥ anugamiṣyasi
12. ye tvayā daṇḍakāraṇye bhakṣitāḥ dharmacāriṇaḥ,
adya saṅkhye nihataḥ sasainyaḥ tān anugamiṣyasi
12. Those practitioners of natural law (dharma-cāriṇaḥ) whom you devoured in the Daṇḍaka forest – today, struck down in battle, you will follow them, along with your army.
अद्य त्वां निहतं बाणैः पश्यन्तु परमर्षयः ।
निरयस्थं विमानस्था ये त्वया हिंसिताः पुरा ॥१३॥
13. adya tvāṃ nihataṃ bāṇaiḥ paśyantu paramarṣayaḥ ,
nirayasthaṃ vimānasthā ye tvayā hiṃsitāḥ purā.
13. adya tvām nihatam bāṇaiḥ paśyantu paramarṣayaḥ
nirayastham vimānasthāḥ ye tvayā hiṃsitāḥ purā
13. adya paramarṣayaḥ (ca) ye tvayā purā hiṃsitāḥ
vimānasthāḥ (ca) tvām bāṇaiḥ nihatam nirayastham paśyantu
13. Today, let the great sages (paramarṣayaḥ) see you, struck down by arrows and residing in hell, while those whom you tormented in the past observe from their celestial vehicles.
प्रहर त्वं यथाकामं कुरु यत्नं कुलाधम ।
अद्य ते पातयिष्यामि शिरस्तालफलं यथा ॥१४॥
14. prahara tvaṃ yathākāmaṃ kuru yatnaṃ kulādhama ,
adya te pātayiṣyāmi śirastālaphalaṃ yathā.
14. prahara tvam yathākāmam kuru yatnam kulādhama
adya te pātayiṣyāmi śiraḥ tālapalam yathā
14. tvam kulādhama yathākāmam prahara yatnam kuru
adya te śiraḥ tālapalam yathā pātayiṣyāmi
14. O wretch of your lineage, strike as you desire, and exert yourself! Today I will fell your head just like a palmyra fruit.
एवमुक्तस्तु रामेण क्रुद्धः संरक्तलोचनः ।
प्रत्युवाच ततो रामं प्रहसन् क्रोधमूर्छितः ॥१५॥
15. evamuktastu rāmeṇa kruddhaḥ saṃraktalocanaḥ ,
pratyuvāca tato rāmaṃ prahasan krodhamūrchitaḥ.
15. evam uktaḥ tu rāmeṇa kruddhaḥ saṃraktalocanaḥ
pratyuvāca tataḥ rāmam prahasan krodhamūrcitaḥ
15. rāmeṇa evam uktaḥ tu kruddhaḥ saṃraktalocanaḥ
krodhamūrcitaḥ tataḥ prahasan rāmam pratyuvāca
15. Thus addressed by Rāma, he became enraged, his eyes bloodshot. Overwhelmed by anger, he then laughed and replied to Rāma.
प्राकृतान् राक्षसान् हत्वा युद्धे दशरथात्मज ।
आत्मना कथमात्मानमप्रशस्यं प्रशंससि ॥१६॥
16. prākṛtān rākṣasān hatvā yuddhe daśarathātmaja ,
ātmanā kathamātmānamapraśasyaṃ praśaṃsasi.
16. prākṛtān rākṣasān hatvā yuddhe daśarathātmaja
ātmanā katham ātmānam apraśasyam praśaṃsasi
16. daśarathātmaja yuddhe prākṛtān rākṣasān hatvā
katham ātmanā apraśasyam ātmānam praśaṃsasi
16. O son of Daśaratha, having killed mere common demons in battle, how can you praise yourself (ātman), who are unworthy of praise?
विक्रान्ता बलवन्तो वा ये भवन्ति नरर्षभाः ।
कथयन्ति न ते किं चित्तेजसा स्वेन गर्विताः ॥१७॥
17. vikrāntā balavanto vā ye bhavanti nararṣabhāḥ ,
kathayanti na te kiṃ cittejasā svena garvitāḥ.
17. vikrāntāḥ balavantaḥ vā ye bhavanti nararṣabhāḥ
kathayanti na te kim cit tejasā svena garvitāḥ
17. ye nararṣabhāḥ vikrāntāḥ vā balavantaḥ bhavanti
te svena tejasā garvitāḥ kim cit na kathayanti
17. Those eminent men (nararṣabhāḥ) who are valiant or powerful, being proud of their own strength, do not boast anything.
प्राकृतास्त्वकृतात्मानो लोके क्षत्रियपांसनाः ।
निरर्थकं विकत्थन्ते यथा राम विकत्थसे ॥१८॥
18. prākṛtāstvakṛtātmāno loke kṣatriyapāṃsanāḥ ,
nirarthakaṃ vikatthante yathā rāma vikatthase.
18. prākṛtāḥ tu akṛtātmānaḥ loke kṣatriyapāṃsanāḥ
nirarthakam vikatthante yathā rāma vikatthase
18. rāma loke prākṛtāḥ tu akṛtātmānaḥ kṣatriyapāṃsanāḥ
nirarthakam vikatthante yathā vikatthase
18. Indeed, in this world, common, uncultivated individuals who are a disgrace to the warrior class, boast pointlessly, just as you, O Rāma, are now boasting.
कुलं व्यपदिशन् वीरः समरे को ऽभिधास्यति ।
मृत्युकाले हि संप्राप्ते स्वयमप्रस्तवे स्तवम् ॥१९॥
19. kulaṃ vyapadiśan vīraḥ samare ko'bhidhāsyati ,
mṛtyukāle hi saṃprāpte svayamaprastave stavam.
19. kulam vyapadiśan vīraḥ samare kaḥ abhidhāsyati
mṛtyukāle hi samprāpte svayam aprastave stavam
19. mṛtyukāle samprāpte hi samare kaḥ vīraḥ kulam
vyapadiśan svayam aprastave stavam abhidhāsyati
19. What hero, when the moment of death has truly arrived in battle, would proclaim his lineage and then praise himself at such an unsuitable time?
सर्वथा तु लघुत्वं ते कत्थनेन विदर्शितम् ।
सुवर्णप्रतिरूपेण तप्तेनेव कुशाग्निना ॥२०॥
20. sarvathā tu laghutvaṃ te katthanena vidarśitam ,
suvarṇapratirūpeṇa tapteneva kuśāgninā.
20. sarvathā tu laghutvam te katthanena vidarśitam
suvarṇapratirūpeṇa taptena iva kuśāgninā
20. sarvathā tu te laghutvam katthanena vidarśitam,
yathā kuśāgninā taptena suvarṇapratirūpeṇa iva (vidarśitam)
20. Indeed, your triviality has been completely revealed by your boasting, just like imitation gold that has been heated by the fire of kusha grass (which would expose its falseness).
न तु मामिह तिष्ठन्तं पश्यसि त्वं गदाधरम् ।
धराधरमिवाकम्प्यं पर्वतं धातुभिश्चितम् ॥२१॥
21. na tu māmiha tiṣṭhantaṃ paśyasi tvaṃ gadādharam ,
dharādharamivākampyaṃ parvataṃ dhātubhiścitam.
21. na tu mām iha tiṣṭhantam paśyasi tvam gadādharam
dharādharam iva akampyam parvatam dhātubhiḥ citam
21. tu tvam iha tiṣṭhantam mām gadādharam,
dhātubhiḥ citam akampyam dharādharam parvatam iva,
na paśyasi
21. Yet you do not perceive me standing here, the mace-wielder, unshakable like a mountain laden with minerals.
पर्याप्तो ऽहं गदापाणिर्हन्तुं प्राणान् रणे तव ।
त्रयाणामपि लोकानां पाशहस्त इवान्तकः ॥२२॥
22. paryāpto'haṃ gadāpāṇirhantuṃ prāṇān raṇe tava ,
trayāṇāmapi lokānāṃ pāśahasta ivāntakaḥ.
22. paryāptaḥ aham gadāpāṇiḥ hantum prāṇān raṇe tava
trayāṇām api lokānām pāśahastaḥ iva antakaḥ
22. aham gadāpāṇiḥ raṇe tava prāṇān hantum paryāptaḥ
iva pāśahastaḥ antakaḥ trayāṇām api lokānām
22. I, wielding a mace, am fully capable of taking your life in battle, just as Antaka (Yama), holding his noose, is capable of destroying even the lives of the three worlds.
कामं बह्वपि वक्तव्यं त्वयि वक्ष्यामि न त्वहम् ।
अस्तं गच्छेद्धि सविता युद्धविघ्रस्ततो भवेत् ॥२३॥
23. kāmaṃ bahvapi vaktavyaṃ tvayi vakṣyāmi na tvaham ,
astaṃ gaccheddhi savitā yuddhavighrastato bhavet.
23. kāmam bahu api vaktavyam tvayi vakṣyāmi na tu aham
astam gacchet hi savitā yuddhavighnaḥ tataḥ bhavet
23. kāmam bahu api vaktavyam (asti),
tu aham tvayi na vakṣyāmi.
hi savitā astam gacchet,
tataḥ yuddhavighnaḥ bhavet.
23. Although there is much that I could say to you, I will not speak (it). The sun may set, and that would cause an interruption of the battle.
चतुर्दश सहस्राणि राक्षसानां हतानि ते ।
त्वद्विनाशात् करोम्यद्य तेषामश्रुप्रमार्जनम् ॥२४॥
24. caturdaśa sahasrāṇi rākṣasānāṃ hatāni te ,
tvadvināśāt karomyadya teṣāmaśrupramārjanam.
24. caturdaśa sahasrāṇi rākṣasānām hatāni te
tvadvināśāt karomi adya teṣām aśrupramārjanam
24. caturdaśa sahasrāṇi rākṣasānām te hatāni.
adya tvadvināśāt teṣām aśrupramārjanam karomi.
24. Fourteen thousand Rākṣasas were killed by you. Today, through your demise, I will wipe away their tears.
इत्युक्त्वा परमक्रुद्धस्तां गदां परमाङ्गदाम् ।
खरश्चिक्षेप रामाय प्रदीप्तामशनिं यथा ॥२५॥
25. ityuktvā paramakruddhastāṃ gadāṃ paramāṅgadām ,
kharaścikṣepa rāmāya pradīptāmaśaniṃ yathā.
25. iti uktvā paramakruddhaḥ tām gadām paramāṅgadām
kharaḥ cikṣepa rāmāya pradīptām aśanim yathā
25. iti uktvā paramakruddhaḥ kharaḥ tām paramāṅgadām gadām pradīptām aśanim yathā rāmāya cikṣepa.
25. Having spoken thus, Khara, utterly enraged, hurled that magnificent mace towards Rāma, just as one would hurl a blazing thunderbolt.
खरबाहुप्रमुक्ता सा प्रदीप्ता महती गदा ।
भस्मवृक्षांश्च गुल्मांश्च कृत्वागात्तत्समीपतः ॥२६॥
26. kharabāhupramuktā sā pradīptā mahatī gadā ,
bhasmavṛkṣāṃśca gulmāṃśca kṛtvāgāttatsamīpataḥ.
26. kharabāhupramuktā sā pradīptā mahatī gadā
bhasmavṛkṣān ca gulmān ca kṛtvā agāt tat samīpataḥ
26. sā kharabāhupramuktā pradīptā mahatī gadā vṛkṣān
ca gulmān ca bhasma kṛtvā tat samīpataḥ agāt
26. That mighty, blazing mace, released by Khara's arm, turned trees and bushes into ashes and then came towards him.
तामापतन्तीं ज्वलितां मृत्युपाशोपमां गदा ।
अन्तरिक्षगतां रामश्चिच्छेद बहुधा शरैः ॥२७॥
27. tāmāpatantīṃ jvalitāṃ mṛtyupāśopamāṃ gadā ,
antarikṣagatāṃ rāmaściccheda bahudhā śaraiḥ.
27. tām āpatantīm jvalitām mṛtyupāśopamām gadām
antarikṣagatām rāmaḥ ciccheda bahudhā śaraiḥ
27. rāmaḥ tām āpatantīm jvalitām mṛtyupāśopamām
antarikṣagatām gadām śaraiḥ bahudhā ciccheda
27. Rama, using his arrows, cut that approaching, blazing mace, which was like the noose of Death and was moving through the sky, into many pieces.
सा विशीर्णा शरैर्भिन्ना पपात धरणीतले ।
गदामन्त्रौषधिबलैर्व्यालीव विनिपातिता ॥२८॥
28. sā viśīrṇā śarairbhinnā papāta dharaṇītale ,
gadāmantrauṣadhibalairvyālīva vinipātitā.
28. sā viśīrṇā śaraiḥ bhinnā papāta dharaṇītale
gadāmantrauṣadhibalaiḥ vyālī iva vinipātitā
28. sā śaraiḥ viśīrṇā bhinnā dharaṇītale papāta,
(sā) gadāmantrauṣadhibalaiḥ vyālī iva vinipātitā
28. That mace, shattered and split by the arrows, fell to the ground. It was struck down like a poisonous female serpent (vyālī) [that is subdued] by the power of maces, mantras, and potent herbs.
