ततः सुमन्त्रमैक्ष्वाकः पीडितो ऽत्र प्रतिज्ञया ।
सबाष्पमतिनिःश्वस्य जगादेदं पुनः पुनः ॥१॥

1. Then, the Ikṣvāku prince (Rāma), distressed here by his vow, repeatedly spoke these words to Sumantra, sighing deeply with tears.
सूत रत्नसुसंपूर्णा चतुर्विधबला चमूः ।
रागवस्यानुयात्रार्थं क्षिप्रं प्रतिविधीयताम् ॥२॥
2. sūta ratnasusaṃpūrṇā caturvidhabalā camūḥ ,
rāgavasyānuyātrārthaṃ kṣipraṃ pratividhīyatām.

2. O charioteer, let an army, fully equipped with jewels and comprising four types of forces, be quickly prepared to accompany Raghava.
रूपाजीवा च शालिन्यो वणिजश्च महाधनाः ।
शोभयन्तु कुमारस्य वाहिनीं सुप्रसारिताः ॥३॥
3. rūpājīvā ca śālinyo vaṇijaśca mahādhanāḥ ,
śobhayantu kumārasya vāhinīṃ suprasāritāḥ.

3. Let the courtesans and excellent women, along with the very wealthy merchants, being widely deployed, grace the prince's retinue (vāhinī).
ये चैनमुपजीवन्ति रमते यैश्च वीर्यतः ।
तेषां बहुविधं दत्त्वा तानप्यत्र नियोजय ॥४॥
4. ye cainamupajīvanti ramate yaiśca vīryataḥ ,
teṣāṃ bahuvidhaṃ dattvā tānapyatra niyojaya.
4. ye ca enam upajīvanti ramate yaiḥ ca vīryataḥ
teṣām bahuvidham dattvā tān api atra niyojaya
4. And those who depend on him, and those through whose valor he himself takes delight, having given various gifts to them, employ them here as well.
निघ्नन्मृगान् कुञ्जरांश्च पिबंश्चारण्यकं मधु ।
नदीश्च विविधाः पश्यन्न राज्यं संस्मरिष्यति ॥५॥
5. nighnanmṛgān kuñjarāṃśca pibaṃścāraṇyakaṃ madhu ,
nadīśca vividhāḥ paśyanna rājyaṃ saṃsmariṣyati.
5. nighnan mṛgān kuñjarān ca piban ca āraṇyakam madhu
nadīḥ ca vividhāḥ paśyan na rājyam saṃsmariṣyati
5. Hunting deer and elephants, drinking forest honey, and seeing various rivers, he will not recall his kingdom.
धान्यकोशश्च यः कश्चिद्धनकोशश्च मामकः ।
तौ राममनुगच्छेतां वसन्तं निर्जने वने ॥६॥
6. dhānyakośaśca yaḥ kaściddhanakośaśca māmakaḥ ,
tau rāmamanugacchetāṃ vasantaṃ nirjane vane.
6. dhānyakośaḥ ca yaḥ kaścit dhanakośaḥ ca māmakaḥ
tau rāmam anugacchetām vasantam nirjane vane
6. yaḥ kaścit dhānyakośaḥ ca dhanakośaḥ ca māmakaḥ

6. Any grain stores and treasuries that belong to me should follow Rāma as he dwells in the solitary forest.
यजन्पुण्येषु देशेषु विसृजंश्चाप्तदक्षिणाः ।
ऋषिभिश्च समागम्य प्रवत्स्यति सुखं वने ॥७॥
7. yajanpuṇyeṣu deśeṣu visṛjaṃścāptadakṣiṇāḥ ,
ṛṣibhiśca samāgamya pravatsyati sukhaṃ vane.
7. yajan puṇyeṣu deśeṣu visṛjan ca āptadakṣiṇāḥ
ṛṣibhiḥ ca samāgamya pravatsyati sukham vane
7. yajan puṇyeṣu deśeṣu ca visṛjan āptadakṣiṇāḥ
ca ṛṣibhiḥ samāgamya sukham vane pravatsyati
7. He will perform sacrifices in sacred places, distributing appropriate ritual fees (dakṣiṇā), and having associated with sages (ṛṣi), he will live comfortably in the forest.
भरतश्च महाबाहुरयोध्यां पालयिष्यति ।
सर्वकामैः पुनः श्रीमान् रामः संसाध्यतामिति ॥८॥
8. bharataśca mahābāhurayodhyāṃ pālayiṣyati ,
sarvakāmaiḥ punaḥ śrīmān rāmaḥ saṃsādhyatāmiti.
8. bharataḥ ca mahābāhuḥ ayodhyām pālayiṣyati
sarvakāmaiḥ punaḥ śrīmān rāmaḥ saṃsādhyatām iti
8. bharataḥ ca mahābāhuḥ ayodhyām pālayiṣyati
punaḥ śrīmān rāmaḥ sarvakāmaiḥ saṃsādhyatām iti
8. And the mighty-armed Bharata will govern Ayodhyā. Furthermore, the glorious Rāma should be brought back (or persuaded to return) with all his wishes (kāma) fulfilled.
एवं ब्रुवति काकुत्स्थे कैकेय्या भयमागतम् ।
मुखं चाप्यगमाच्छोषं स्वरश्चापि न्यरुध्यत ॥९॥
9. evaṃ bruvati kākutsthe kaikeyyā bhayamāgatam ,
mukhaṃ cāpyagamācchoṣaṃ svaraścāpi nyarudhyata.
9. evam bruvati kākutsthe kaikeyyā bhayam āgatam mukham
ca api agamat śoṣam svaraḥ ca api nyarudhyata
9. evam kākutsthe bruvati kaikeyyā bhayam āgatam ca
api mukham śoṣam agamat ca api svaraḥ nyarudhyata
9. As Kakutstha (Rāma) spoke thus, fear seized Kaikeyi. Her face dried up, and her voice became choked.
सा विषण्णा च संत्रस्ता कैकेयी वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
राज्यं गतजनं साधो पीतमण्डां सुरामिव ।
निरास्वाद्यतमं शून्यं भरतो नाभिपत्स्यते ॥१०॥
10. sā viṣaṇṇā ca saṃtrastā kaikeyī vākyamabravīt ,
rājyaṃ gatajanaṃ sādho pītamaṇḍāṃ surāmiva ,
nirāsvādyatamaṃ śūnyaṃ bharato nābhipatsyate.
10. sā viṣaṇṇā ca saṃtrastā kaikeyī
vākyam abravīt rājyam gatajanam sādho
pītamaṇḍām surām iva nirāsvādyatamam
śūnyam bharataḥ na abhipatsyate
10. sā viṣaṇṇā ca saṃtrastā kaikeyī idam
vākyam abravīt sādho gatajanam
pītamaṇḍām surām iva nirāsvādyatamam
śūnyam rājyam bharataḥ na abhipatsyate
10. Distressed and terrified, Kaikeyi said these words: "O virtuous one, Bharata will not accept the kingdom, which will be devoid of people, utterly tasteless, and empty, just like liquor from which the essence has been drunk."
कैकेय्यां मुक्तलज्जायां वदन्त्यामतिदारुणम् ।
राजा दशरथो वाक्यमुवाचायतलोचनाम् ।
वहन्तं किं तुदसि मां नियुज्य धुरि माहिते ॥११॥
11. kaikeyyāṃ muktalajjāyāṃ vadantyāmatidāruṇam ,
rājā daśaratho vākyamuvācāyatalocanām ,
vahantaṃ kiṃ tudasi māṃ niyujya dhuri māhite.
11. kaikeyyām muktalajjāyām vadantyām
atidāruṇam rājā daśarathaḥ vākyam
uvāca āyatalocanām vahantam
kim tudasi mām niyujya dhuri māhite
11. muktalajjāyām kaikeyyām atidāruṇam
vadantyām rājā daśarathaḥ
āyatalocanām vākyam uvāca mām vahantam
dhuri niyujya māhite kim tudasi
11. As Kaikeyi, having abandoned all shame, spoke very cruelly, King Daśaratha said to the broad-eyed one (Kaikeyi), "Why do you torment me, who am already bearing this burden, having yoked me to a heavy task?"
कैकेयी द्विगुणं क्रुद्धा राजानमिदमब्रवीत् ।
तवैव वंशे सगरो ज्येष्ठं पुत्रमुपारुधत् ।
असमञ्ज इति ख्यातं तथायं गन्तुमर्हति ॥१२॥
12. kaikeyī dviguṇaṃ kruddhā rājānamidamabravīt ,
tavaiva vaṃśe sagaro jyeṣṭhaṃ putramupārudhat ,
asamañja iti khyātaṃ tathāyaṃ gantumarhati.
12. kaikeyī dviguṇam kruddhā rājānam idam
abravīt tava eva vaṃśe sagaraḥ
jyeṣṭham putram upārudhat asamañjaḥ
iti khyātam tathā ayam gantum arhati

12. Kaikeyi, now twice as enraged, said this to the king: "Indeed, in your own lineage, Sagara banished his eldest son, known as Asamañja. In the same way, this one (Rama) should also go."
एवमुक्तो धिगित्येव राजा दशरथो ऽब्रवीत् ।
व्रीडितश्च जनः सर्वः सा च तन्नावबुध्यत ॥१३॥
13. evamukto dhigityeva rājā daśaratho'bravīt ,
vrīḍitaśca janaḥ sarvaḥ sā ca tannāvabudhyata.
13. evam uktaḥ dhik iti eva rājā daśarathaḥ abravīt
vrīḍitaḥ ca janaḥ sarvaḥ sā ca tat na avabudhyata
13. evam uktaḥ rājā daśarathaḥ dhik iti eva abravīt
ca sarvaḥ janaḥ vrīḍitaḥ ca sā tat na avabudhyata
13. When spoken to in this manner, King Daśaratha simply exclaimed, "Fie!" All the people present were ashamed, but she (Kaikeyi) did not comprehend it.
तत्र वृद्धो महामात्रः सिद्धार्थो नाम नामतः ।
शुचिर्बहुमतो राज्ञः कैकेयीमिदमब्रवीत् ॥१४॥
14. tatra vṛddho mahāmātraḥ siddhārtho nāma nāmataḥ ,
śucirbahumato rājñaḥ kaikeyīmidamabravīt.
14. tatra vṛddhaḥ mahāmātraḥ siddhārthaḥ nāma nāmataḥ
śuciḥ bahumataḥ rājñaḥ kaikeyīm idam abravīt
14. tatra nāma nāmataḥ vṛddhaḥ mahāmātraḥ siddhārthaḥ
śuciḥ rājñaḥ bahumataḥ idam kaikeyīm abravīt
14. Then, an aged chief minister named Siddhartha, who was pure and highly respected by the king, said this to Kaikeyi.
असमञ्जो गृहीत्वा तु क्रीडितः पथि दारकान् ।
सरय्वाः प्रक्षिपन्नप्सु रमते तेन दुर्मतिः ॥१५॥
15. asamañjo gṛhītvā tu krīḍitaḥ pathi dārakān ,
sarayvāḥ prakṣipannapsu ramate tena durmatiḥ.
15. asamañjaḥ gṛhītvā tu krīḍitaḥ pathi dārakān
sarayvāḥ prakṣipan apsu ramate tena durmatiḥ
15. durmatiḥ asamañjaḥ tu pathi krīḍitaḥ dārakān
gṛhītvā sarayvāḥ apsu prakṣipan tena ramate
15. Asamañja, that wicked one, having seized the boys who had been playing on the road, would throw them into the waters of the Sarayu and find delight in that act.
तं दृष्ट्वा नागरः सर्वे क्रुद्धा राजानमब्रुवन् ।
असमञ्जं वृषीण्वैकमस्मान् वा राष्ट्रवर्धन ॥१६॥
16. taṃ dṛṣṭvā nāgaraḥ sarve kruddhā rājānamabruvan ,
asamañjaṃ vṛṣīṇvaikamasmān vā rāṣṭravardhana.
16. tam dṛṣṭvā nāgarāḥ sarve kruddhāḥ rājānam abruvan
asamañjam vṛṇīṣva ekam asmān vā rāṣṭravardhana
16. rāṣṭravardhana! sarve kruddhāḥ nāgarāḥ tam dṛṣṭvā
rājānam abruvan asamañjam vā asmān ekam vṛṇīṣva
16. Having seen him (doing this), all the enraged citizens said to the king, "O enhancer of the kingdom, choose either Asamañja or us!"
तानुवाच ततो राजा किंनिमित्तमिदं भयम् ।
ताश्चापि राज्ञा संपृष्टा वाक्यं प्रकृतयो ऽब्रुवन् ॥१७॥
17. tānuvāca tato rājā kiṃnimittamidaṃ bhayam ,
tāścāpi rājñā saṃpṛṣṭā vākyaṃ prakṛtayo'bruvan.
17. tān uvāca tataḥ rājā kimnimittam idam bhayam tāḥ
ca api rājñā sampṛṣṭāḥ vākyam prakṛtayaḥ abruvan
17. tataḥ rājā tān uvāca,
"idam bhayam kimnimittam?" ca api rājñā sampṛṣṭāḥ tāḥ prakṛtayaḥ vākyam abruvan
17. Then the king said to them, "What is the cause of this fear?" And they, the citizens (prakṛti), being questioned by the king, spoke these words.
क्रीडितस्त्वेष नः पुत्रान्बालानुद्भ्रान्तचेतनः ।
सरय्वां प्रक्षिपन्मौर्ख्यादतुलां प्रीतिमश्नुते ॥१८॥
18. krīḍitastveṣa naḥ putrānbālānudbhrāntacetanaḥ ,
sarayvāṃ prakṣipanmaurkhyādatulāṃ prītimaśnute.
18. krīḍitaḥ tu eṣaḥ naḥ putrān bālān udbhrāntacetanaḥ
sarayvām prakṣipan maurkhyāt atulām prītim aśnute
18. eṣaḥ udbhrāntacetanaḥ krīḍitaḥ naḥ putrān bālān
sarayvām maurkhyāt prakṣipan atulām prītim aśnute
18. This individual, whose mind is bewildered, foolishly throws our children into the Sarayu river while playing, and thereby attains unparalleled joy (prīti).
स तासां वचनं श्रुत्वा प्रकृतीनां नराधिप ।
तं तत्याजाहितं पुत्रं तासां प्रियचिकीर्षया ॥१९॥
19. sa tāsāṃ vacanaṃ śrutvā prakṛtīnāṃ narādhipa ,
taṃ tatyājāhitaṃ putraṃ tāsāṃ priyacikīrṣayā.
19. saḥ tāsām vacanam śrutvā prakṛtīnām narādhipa
tam tatyāja ahitam putram tāsām priyacikīrṣayā
19. narādhipa saḥ tāsām prakṛtīnām vacanam śrutvā
tāsām priyacikīrṣayā tam ahitam putram tatyāja
19. O king (narādhipa), upon hearing the words of those subjects (prakṛti), he abandoned that harmful son, wishing to do what was pleasing to them.
इत्येवमत्यजद् राजा सगरो वै सुधार्मिकः ।
रामः किमकरोत् पापं येनैवमुपरुध्यते ॥२०॥
20. ityevamatyajad rājā sagaro vai sudhārmikaḥ ,
rāmaḥ kimakarot pāpaṃ yenaivamuparudhyate.
20. iti evam atyajat rājā sagaraḥ vai sudhārmikaḥ
rāmaḥ kim akarot pāpam yena evam uparudhyate
20. iti evam vai sudhārmikaḥ rājā sagaraḥ atyajat
rāmaḥ kim pāpam akarot yena evam uparudhyate
20. In this manner, the highly righteous King Sagara indeed abandoned (his son). What wrongdoing (pāpa) did Rama commit that he is thus being hindered?
श्रुत्वा तु सिद्धार्थवचो राजा श्रान्ततरस्वनः ।
शोकोपहतया वाचा कैकेयीमिदमब्रवीत् ॥२१॥
21. śrutvā tu siddhārthavaco rājā śrāntatarasvanaḥ ,
śokopahatayā vācā kaikeyīmidamabravīt.
21. śrutvā tu siddhārthavacaḥ rājā śrāntatarasvanaḥ
śokopahatayā vācā kaikeyīm idam abravīt
21. tu rājā siddhārthavacaḥ śrutvā śrāntatarasvanaḥ
śokopahatayā vācā idam kaikeyīm abravīt
21. But, upon hearing Siddhartha's words, the king, with a voice that was both extremely weary and overcome by sorrow, spoke this to Kaikeyi.
अनुव्रजिष्याम्यहमद्य रामं राज्यं परित्यज्य सुखं धनं च ।
सहैव राज्ञा भरतेन च त्वं यथा सुखं भुङ्क्ष्व चिराय राज्यम् ॥२२॥
22. anuvrajiṣyāmyahamadya rāmaṃ rājyaṃ parityajya sukhaṃ dhanaṃ ca ,
sahaiva rājñā bharatena ca tvaṃ yathā sukhaṃ bhuṅkṣva cirāya rājyam.
22. anuvrajiṣyāmi aham adya rāmam rājyam
parityajya sukham dhanam ca |
saha eva rājñā bharatena ca tvam
yathā sukham bhuṅkṣva cirāya rājyam
22. aham adya rāmam anuvrajiṣyāmi rājyam
sukham dhanam ca parityajya
tvam ca saha eva rājñā bharatena
yathā sukham cirāya rājyam bhuṅkṣva
22. I will follow Rāma today, abandoning the kingdom, happiness, and wealth. And you, along with King Bharata, should enjoy the kingdom happily for a long time.
