तं तथा शोकसंतप्तं विलपन्तमनाथवत् ।
मोहेन महताविष्टं परिद्यूनमचेतनम् ॥१॥

1. Him, thus tormented by sorrow, lamenting like one without a protector, overwhelmed by great delusion, utterly distraught and unconscious.
ततः सौमित्रिराश्वास्य मुहूर्तादिव लक्ष्मणः ।
रामं संबोधयामास चरणौ चाभिपीडयन् ॥२॥
2. tataḥ saumitrirāśvāsya muhūrtādiva lakṣmaṇaḥ ,
rāmaṃ saṃbodhayāmāsa caraṇau cābhipīḍayan.
2. tataḥ saumitriḥ āśvāsya muhūrtāt iva lakṣmaṇaḥ
rāmam saṃbodhayāmāsa caraṇau ca abhipīḍayan
2. tataḥ muhūrtāt iva saumitriḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ rāmam
āśvāsya ca caraṇau abhipīḍayan saṃbodhayāmāsa
2. Then, after a short while, Lakṣmaṇa, the son of Sumitrā (Saumitri), having already comforted Rāma, addressed him while also pressing his feet.
महता तपसा राम महता चापि कर्मणा ।
राज्ञा दशरथेनासील् लब्धो ऽमृतमिवामरैः ॥३॥
3. mahatā tapasā rāma mahatā cāpi karmaṇā ,
rājñā daśarathenāsīl labdho'mṛtamivāmaraiḥ.
3. mahatā tapasā rāma mahatā ca api karmaṇā rājñā
daśarathena āsīt labdhaḥ amṛtam iva amaraiḥ
3. rāma rājñā daśarathena mahatā tapasā ca api
mahatā karmaṇā amṛtam iva amaraiḥ labdhaḥ āsīt
3. O Rāma, King Daśaratha obtained you through great spiritual austerity (tapas) and also through great actions (karma), just as the gods obtained nectar.
तव चैव गुणैर्बद्धस्त्वद्वियोगान्महीपतिः ।
राजा देवत्वमापन्नो भरतस्य यथा श्रुतम् ॥४॥
4. tava caiva guṇairbaddhastvadviyogānmahīpatiḥ ,
rājā devatvamāpanno bharatasya yathā śrutam.
4. tava ca eva guṇaiḥ baddhaḥ tvadviyogāt mahīpatiḥ
rājā devatvam āpannaḥ bharatasya yathā śrutam
4. mahīpatiḥ rājā tava guṇaiḥ baddhaḥ ca eva
tvadviyogāt devatvam āpannaḥ bharatasya yathā śrutam
4. The king (Daśaratha), bound by your qualities (guṇa), indeed attained godhood due to separation from you, as Bharata heard.
यदि दुःखमिदं प्राप्तं काकुत्स्थ न सहिष्यसे ।
प्राकृतश्चाल्पसत्त्वश्च इतरः कः सहिष्यति ॥५॥
5. yadi duḥkhamidaṃ prāptaṃ kākutstha na sahiṣyase ,
prākṛtaścālpasattvaśca itaraḥ kaḥ sahiṣyati.
5. yadi duḥkham idam prāptam kākutstha na sahiṣyase
prākṛtaḥ ca alpasattvaḥ ca itaraḥ kaḥ sahiṣyati
5. kākutstha yadi idam prāptam duḥkham na sahiṣyase
itaraḥ prākṛtaḥ ca alpasattvaḥ ca kaḥ sahiṣyati
5. If you, O Kakutstha, cannot endure this sorrow that has come upon you, then who else, being ordinary and of little fortitude, will be able to endure it?
दुःखितो हि भवांल् लोकांस्तेजसा यदि धक्ष्यते ।
आर्ताः प्रजा नरव्याघ्र क्व नु यास्यन्ति निर्वृतिम् ॥६॥
6. duḥkhito hi bhavāṃl lokāṃstejasā yadi dhakṣyate ,
ārtāḥ prajā naravyāghra kva nu yāsyanti nirvṛtim.
6. duḥkhitaḥ hi bhavān lokān tejasā yadi dhakṣyate
ārtāḥ prajā naravyāghra kva nu yāsyanti nirvṛtim
6. naravyāghra yadi hi bhavān duḥkhitaḥ tejasā lokān
dhakṣyate nu ārtāḥ prajā kva nirvṛtim yāsyanti
6. If, O tiger among men, you, being distressed, will incinerate the worlds with your brilliance, where then will the afflicted people go to find peace?
लोकस्वभाव एवैष ययातिर्नहुषात्मजः ।
गतः शक्रेण सालोक्यमनयस्तं समस्पृशत् ॥७॥
7. lokasvabhāva evaiṣa yayātirnahuṣātmajaḥ ,
gataḥ śakreṇa sālokyamanayastaṃ samaspṛśat.
7. lokasvabhāvaḥ eva eṣa yayātiḥ nahuṣātmajaḥ
gataḥ śakreṇa sālokyam anayaḥ tam samaspṛśat
7. eṣa eva lokasvabhāvaḥ nahuṣātmajaḥ yayātiḥ
śakreṇa sālokyam gataḥ anayaḥ tam samaspṛśat
7. This is just the natural way of the world: Yayati, the son of Nahuṣa, having attained residence in the same realm as Indra (Śakra), was afflicted by misfortune.
महर्षयो वसिष्ठस्तु यः पितुर्नः पुरोहितः ।
अह्ना पुत्रशतं जज्ञे तथैवास्य पुनर्हतम् ॥८॥
8. maharṣayo vasiṣṭhastu yaḥ piturnaḥ purohitaḥ ,
ahnā putraśataṃ jajñe tathaivāsya punarhatam.
8. maharṣayaḥ vasiṣṭhaḥ tu yaḥ pituḥ naḥ purohitaḥ
ahnā putraśatam jajñe tathā eva asya punaḥ hatam
8. yaḥ naḥ pituḥ purohitaḥ tu maharṣayaḥ vasiṣṭhaḥ
ahnā putraśatam jajñe tathā eva asya punaḥ hatam
8. Indeed, the great sage Vasiṣṭha, who is our father's family priest (purohita), had a hundred sons born to him in a single day, and just so, they were again slain for him.
या चेयं जगतो माता देवी लोकनमस्कृता ।
अस्याश्च चलनं भूमेर्दृश्यते सत्यसंश्रव ॥९॥
9. yā ceyaṃ jagato mātā devī lokanamaskṛtā ,
asyāśca calanaṃ bhūmerdṛśyate satyasaṃśrava.
9. yā ca iyam jagataḥ mātā devī lokanamaskṛtā
asyāḥ ca calanam bhūmeḥ dṛśyate satyasaṁśrava
9. satyasaṁśrava,
yā ca iyam jagataḥ mātā devī lokanamaskṛtā asyāḥ ca bhūmeḥ calanam dṛśyate
9. O truthful listener (satyasaṁśrava), this [Earth], who is the mother of the cosmos (jagat) and a goddess revered by all people, her movement (calana) across the ground is seen.
यौ चेमौ जगतां नेत्रे यत्र सर्वं प्रतिष्ठितम् ।
आदित्यचन्द्रौ ग्रहणमभ्युपेतौ महाबलौ ॥१०॥
10. yau cemau jagatāṃ netre yatra sarvaṃ pratiṣṭhitam ,
ādityacandrau grahaṇamabhyupetau mahābalau.
10. yau ca imau jagatām netre yatra sarvam pratiṣṭhitam
ādityacandrau grahaṇam abhyupetau mahābalau
10. yatra sarvam pratiṣṭhitam,
yau ca imau jagatām netre (staḥ),
mahābalau ādityacandrau (tau api) grahaṇam abhyupetau
10. And these two, the sun and moon, which are the eyes of the worlds (jagat) and in which everything is established, though immensely powerful, have undergone an eclipse.
सुमहान्त्यपि भूतानि देवाश्च पुरुषर्षभ ।
न दैवस्य प्रमुञ्चन्ति सर्वभूतानि देहिनः ॥११॥
11. sumahāntyapi bhūtāni devāśca puruṣarṣabha ,
na daivasya pramuñcanti sarvabhūtāni dehinaḥ.
11. sumahānti api bhūtāni devāḥ ca puruṣarṣabha
na daivasya pramuñcanti sarvabhūtāni dehinaḥ
11. puruṣarṣabha,
sumahānti api bhūtāni ca devāḥ sarvabhūtāni dehinaḥ daivasya na pramuñcanti
11. O best among men (puruṣa), even very great beings (bhūta) and gods - indeed, all embodied beings (dehin) - do not escape the power of destiny (daiva).
शक्रादिष्वपि देवेषु वर्तमानौ नयानयौ ।
श्रूयेते नरशार्दूल न त्वं व्यथितुमर्हसि ॥१२॥
12. śakrādiṣvapi deveṣu vartamānau nayānayau ,
śrūyete naraśārdūla na tvaṃ vyathitumarhasi.
12. śakra-ādiṣu api deveṣu vartamānau naya-anayau
śrūyete naraśārdūla na tvam vyathitum arhasi
12. naraśārdūla śakra-ādiṣu deveṣu api naya-anayau
vartamānau śrūyete tvam na vyathitum arhasi
12. O tiger among men, both proper and improper conduct are seen even among the gods like Indra. Therefore, you should not be distressed.
नष्टायामपि वैदेह्यां हृतायामपि चानघ ।
शोचितुं नार्हसे वीर यथान्यः प्राकृतस्तथा ॥१३॥
13. naṣṭāyāmapi vaidehyāṃ hṛtāyāmapi cānagha ,
śocituṃ nārhase vīra yathānyaḥ prākṛtastathā.
13. naṣṭāyām api vaidehyām hṛtāyām api ca anagha
śocitum na arhase vīra yathā anyaḥ prākṛtaḥ tathā
13. anagha vīra vaidehyām naṣṭāyām api hṛtāyām api ca
tvam anyaḥ prākṛtaḥ yathā na śocitum arhase tathā
13. O sinless one (anagha), O hero (vīra), even if Vaidehī is lost or carried away, you should not grieve like any other ordinary person.
त्वद्विधा हि न शोचन्ति सततं सत्यदर्शिनः ।
सुमहत्स्वपि कृच्छ्रेषु रामानिर्विण्णदर्शणाः ॥१४॥
14. tvadvidhā hi na śocanti satataṃ satyadarśinaḥ ,
sumahatsvapi kṛcchreṣu rāmānirviṇṇadarśaṇāḥ.
14. tvat-vidhāḥ hi na śocanti satatam satya-darśinaḥ
su-mahatsu api kṛcchreṣu rāma anirviṇṇa-darśanāḥ
14. rāma tvat-vidhāḥ hi ye satatam satya-darśinaḥ
anirviṇṇa-darśanāḥ su-mahatsu kṛcchreṣu api na śocanti
14. O Rama, those like you, who constantly perceive the truth and whose insight remains undiscouraged even in very great difficulties, indeed do not grieve.
तत्त्वतो हि नरश्रेष्ठ बुद्ध्या समनुचिन्तय ।
बुद्ध्या युक्ता महाप्राज्ञा विजानन्ति शुभाशुभे ॥१५॥
15. tattvato hi naraśreṣṭha buddhyā samanucintaya ,
buddhyā yuktā mahāprājñā vijānanti śubhāśubhe.
15. tattvataḥ hi naraśreṣṭha buddhyā samanu-cintaya
buddhyā yuktāḥ mahā-prājñāḥ vijānanti śubha-aśubhe
15. naraśreṣṭha tattvataḥ hi buddhyā samanu-cintaya
buddhyā yuktāḥ mahā-prājñāḥ śubha-aśubhe vijānanti
15. O best of men, truly, reflect deeply with your intellect (buddhi). For the greatly wise, who are endowed with sharp intellect, fully understand both the auspicious and the inauspicious.
अदृष्टगुणदोषाणामधृतानां च कर्मणाम् ।
नान्तरेण क्रियां तेषां फलमिष्टं प्रवर्तते ॥१६॥
16. adṛṣṭaguṇadoṣāṇāmadhṛtānāṃ ca karmaṇām ,
nāntareṇa kriyāṃ teṣāṃ phalamiṣṭaṃ pravartate.
16. adṛṣṭaguṇadoṣāṇām adhṛtānām ca karmaṇām na
antareṇa kriyām teṣām phalam iṣṭam pravartate
16. karmaṇām adṛṣṭaguṇadoṣāṇām ca adhṛtānām teṣām
iṣṭam phalam kriyām antareṇa na pravartate
16. Without the performance of actions (karma) whose merits and demerits are not perceived, or which have not been initiated, their desired result does not manifest.
मामेव हि पुरा वीर त्वमेव बहुषो ऽन्वशाः ।
अनुशिष्याद्धि को नु त्वामपि साक्षाद्बृहस्पतिः ॥१७॥
17. māmeva hi purā vīra tvameva bahuṣo'nvaśāḥ ,
anuśiṣyāddhi ko nu tvāmapi sākṣādbṛhaspatiḥ.
17. mām eva hi purā vīra tvam eva bahuśaḥ anvaśāḥ
anuśiṣyāt hi kaḥ nu tvām api sākṣāt bṛhaspatiḥ
17. vīra purā hi tvam eva mām bahuśaḥ anvaśāḥ hi
nu kaḥ api sākṣāt bṛhaspatiḥ tvām anuśiṣyāt
17. O hero, you yourself have repeatedly instructed me in the past. Indeed, who could instruct you, not even Bṛhaspati himself directly?
बुद्धिश्च ते महाप्राज्ञ देवैरपि दुरन्वया ।
शोकेनाभिप्रसुप्तं ते ज्ञानं संबोधयाम्यहम् ॥१८॥
18. buddhiśca te mahāprājña devairapi duranvayā ,
śokenābhiprasuptaṃ te jñānaṃ saṃbodhayāmyaham.
18. buddhiḥ ca te mahāprājña devaiḥ api duranvayā
śokena abhiprasuptam te jñānam saṃbodhayāmi aham
18. mahāprājña te buddhiḥ ca devaiḥ api duranvayā
aham te śokena abhiprasuptam jñānam saṃbodhayāmi
18. O greatly wise one, your intellect is difficult even for the gods to fathom. I shall awaken your knowledge, which has fallen into a deep slumber due to sorrow.
दिव्यं च मानुषं चैवमात्मनश्च पराक्रमम् ।
इक्ष्वाकुवृषभावेक्ष्य यतस्व द्विषतां बधे ॥१९॥
19. divyaṃ ca mānuṣaṃ caivamātmanaśca parākramam ,
ikṣvākuvṛṣabhāvekṣya yatasva dviṣatāṃ badhe.
19. divyam ca mānuṣam ca evam ātmanaḥ ca parākramam
ikṣvākuvṛṣabha āvekṣya yatasva dviṣatām badhe
19. ikṣvākuvṛṣabha evam divyam ca mānuṣam ca ātmanaḥ
ca parākramam āvekṣya dviṣatām badhe yatasva
19. O bull among the Ikṣvākus, having thus considered your divine and human prowess, and the prowess of your self (ātman), exert yourself for the destruction of your enemies.
किं ते सर्वविनाशेन कृतेन पुरुषर्षभ ।
तमेव तु रिपुं पापं विज्ञायोद्धर्तुमर्हसि ॥२०॥
20. kiṃ te sarvavināśena kṛtena puruṣarṣabha ,
tameva tu ripuṃ pāpaṃ vijñāyoddhartumarhasi.
20. kim te sarvavināśena kṛtena puruṣarṣabha tam
eva tu ripum pāpam vijñāya uddhartum arhasi
20. puruṣarṣabha te sarvavināśena kṛtena kim [phalam]? tu tam eva pāpam ripum vijñāya uddhartum arhasi.
20. O bull among men (puruṣarṣabha), what is the benefit for you in accomplishing universal destruction? Rather, you should identify that very sinful enemy and ought to rescue (Sita).
