घोरेण शरबन्धेन बद्धौ दशरथात्मजौ ।
निश्वसन्तौ यथा नागौ शयानौ रुधिरोक्षितौ ॥१॥

1. The two sons of Daśaratha, bound by a terrible bond of arrows, lay covered in blood, sighing like two serpents.
सर्वे ते वानरश्रेष्ठाः ससुग्रीवा महाबलाः ।
परिवार्य महात्मानौ तस्थुः शोकपरिप्लुताः ॥२॥
2. sarve te vānaraśreṣṭhāḥ sasugrīvā mahābalāḥ ,
parivārya mahātmānau tasthuḥ śokapariplutāḥ.

2. All those mighty chiefs of the vānaras, including Sugrīva, stood surrounding the two great-souled (mahātman) princes, overcome with grief.
एतस्मिन्नन्तेरे रामः प्रत्यबुध्यत वीर्यवान् ।
स्थिरत्वात् सत्त्वयोगाच्च शरैः संदानितो ऽपि सन् ॥३॥
3. etasminnantere rāmaḥ pratyabudhyata vīryavān ,
sthiratvāt sattvayogācca śaraiḥ saṃdānito'pi san.
3. etasmin antare rāmaḥ pratyabudhyata vīryavān
sthiratvāt sattvayogāt ca śaraiḥ saṃdānitaḥ api san
3. In the meantime, the valorous Rāma awoke, even though he was bound by arrows, due to his steadfastness and inner strength (sattva).
ततो दृष्ट्वा सरुधिरं विषण्णं गाढमर्पितम् ।
भ्रातरं दीनवदनं पर्यदेवयदातुरः ॥४॥
4. tato dṛṣṭvā sarudhiraṃ viṣaṇṇaṃ gāḍhamarpitam ,
bhrātaraṃ dīnavadanaṃ paryadevayadāturaḥ.
4. tataḥ dṛṣṭvā sarudhiram viṣaṇṇam gāḍham arpitam
bhrātaram dīnavadanam paryadevayat āturaḥ
4. Then, seeing his brother distressed, covered in blood, severely wounded, and with a sorrowful face, he lamented in anguish.
किं नु मे सीतया कार्यं किं कार्यं जीवितेन वा ।
शयानं यो ऽद्य पश्यामि भ्रातरं युधि निर्जितम् ॥५॥
5. kiṃ nu me sītayā kāryaṃ kiṃ kāryaṃ jīvitena vā ,
śayānaṃ yo'dya paśyāmi bhrātaraṃ yudhi nirjitam.

5. What use is Sita to me, or what use is life, when I see my brother lying defeated in battle today?
शक्या सीता समा नारी प्राप्तुं लोके विचिन्वता ।
न लक्ष्मणसमो भ्राता सचिवः साम्परायिकः ॥६॥
6. śakyā sītā samā nārī prāptuṃ loke vicinvatā ,
na lakṣmaṇasamo bhrātā sacivaḥ sāmparāyikaḥ.

6. A woman similar to Sita can be found in the world by searching. But a brother or companion (saciva) like Lakshmana, who is fit for war (sāmparāyika), cannot be found.
परित्यक्ष्याम्यहं प्राणान् वानराणां तु पश्यताम् ।
यदि पञ्चत्वमापन्नः सुमित्रानन्दवर्धनः ॥७॥
7. parityakṣyāmyahaṃ prāṇān vānarāṇāṃ tu paśyatām ,
yadi pañcatvamāpannaḥ sumitrānandavardhanaḥ.
7. parityakṣyāmi aham prāṇān vānarāṇām tu paśyatām
yadi pañcatvam āpannaḥ sumitrānandavardhanaḥ
7. I will abandon my life while the monkeys watch, if the enhancer of Sumitra's joy (sumitrānandavardhana) has attained death.
किं नु वक्ष्यामि कौसल्यां मातरं किं नु कैकयीम् ।
कथमम्बां सुमित्रांच पुत्रदर्शनलालसाम् ॥८॥
8. kiṃ nu vakṣyāmi kausalyāṃ mātaraṃ kiṃ nu kaikayīm ,
kathamambāṃ sumitrāṃca putradarśanalālasām.
8. kim nu vakṣyāmi kausalyām mātaram kim nu kaikeyīm
katham ambām sumitrām ca putradarśanalālasām

8. What indeed shall I say to mother Kausalya, and what indeed to Kaikeyi? How shall I address mother Sumitra, who is longing to see her son?
विवत्सां वेपमानां च क्रोशन्तीं कुररीमिव ।
कथमाश्वासयिष्यामि यदि यास्यामि तं विना ॥९॥
9. vivatsāṃ vepamānāṃ ca krośantīṃ kurarīmiva ,
kathamāśvāsayiṣyāmi yadi yāsyāmi taṃ vinā.
9. vivatsām vepamānām ca krośantīm kurarīm iva
katham āśvāsayiṣyāmi yadi yāsyāmi tam vinā
9. yadi tam vinā yāsyāmi (tām) vivatsām vepamānām

9. How shall I console her, who will be trembling and crying out like an osprey separated from its young, if I go without him?
कथं वक्ष्यामि शत्रुघ्नं भरतं च यशस्विनम् ।
मया सह वनं यातो विना तेनागतः पुनः ॥१०॥
10. kathaṃ vakṣyāmi śatrughnaṃ bharataṃ ca yaśasvinam ,
mayā saha vanaṃ yāto vinā tenāgataḥ punaḥ.
10. katham vakṣyāmi śatrughnam bharatam ca yaśasvinam
mayā saha vanam yātaḥ vinā tena āgataḥ punaḥ
10. katham śatrughnam yaśasvinam bharatam ca vakṣyāmi:
mayā saha vanam yātaḥ tena vinā punaḥ āgataḥ
10. How shall I tell Śatrughna and the glorious Bharata: "He went to the forest with me, but I have returned without him"?
उपालम्भं न शक्ष्यामि सोढुं बत सुमित्रया ।
इहैव देहं त्यक्ष्यामि न हि जीवितुमुत्सहे ॥११॥
11. upālambhaṃ na śakṣyāmi soḍhuṃ bata sumitrayā ,
ihaiva dehaṃ tyakṣyāmi na hi jīvitumutsahe.
11. upālambham na śakṣyāmi soḍhum bata sumitrayā
iha eva deham tyakṣyāmi na hi jīvitum utsahe
11. bata sumitrayā upālambham soḍhum na śakṣyāmi.
iha eva deham tyakṣyāmi; hi na jīvitum utsahe
11. Alas, I shall not be able to endure the reproach from Sumitra. I will abandon my body right here, for I do not wish to live.
धिङ् मां दुष्कृतकर्माणमनार्यं यत्कृते ह्यसौ ।
लक्ष्मणः पतितः शेते शरतल्पे गतासुवत् ॥१२॥
12. dhiṅ māṃ duṣkṛtakarmāṇamanāryaṃ yatkṛte hyasau ,
lakṣmaṇaḥ patitaḥ śete śaratalpe gatāsuvat.
12. dhiṅ mām duṣkṛtakarmāṇam anāryam yatkṛte hi
asau lakṣmaṇaḥ patitaḥ śete śaratālpe gatāsuvat
12. dhiṅ mām anāryam duṣkṛtakarmāṇam,
yatkṛte hi asau lakṣmaṇaḥ patitaḥ śaratālpe gatāsuvat śete.
12. Shame on me, the ignoble one who has committed wicked deeds, because of whom this Lakṣmaṇa lies fallen on a bed of arrows, as if dead.
त्वं नित्यं सुविषण्णं मामाश्वासयसि लक्ष्मण ।
गतासुर्नाद्य शक्नोषि मामार्तमभिभाषितुम् ॥१३॥
13. tvaṃ nityaṃ suviṣaṇṇaṃ māmāśvāsayasi lakṣmaṇa ,
gatāsurnādya śaknoṣi māmārtamabhibhāṣitum.
13. tvam nityam suviṣaṇṇam mām āśvāsayasi lakṣmaṇa
gatāsuḥ na adya śaknoṣi mām ārtam abhibhāṣitum
13. lakṣmaṇa,
tvam nityam suviṣaṇṇam mām āśvāsayasi.
adya gatāsuḥ (san),
ārtam mām abhibhāṣitum na śaknoṣi.
13. Lakṣmaṇa, you always used to console me when I was greatly distressed. Now, with your life departed, you are unable to speak to me, who am suffering.
येनाद्य बहवो युद्धे राक्षसा निहताः क्षितौ ।
तस्यामेव क्षितौ वीरः स शेते निहतः परैः ॥१४॥
14. yenādya bahavo yuddhe rākṣasā nihatāḥ kṣitau ,
tasyāmeva kṣitau vīraḥ sa śete nihataḥ paraiḥ.
14. yena adya bahavaḥ yuddhe rākṣasāḥ nihatāḥ kṣitau
tasyām eva kṣitau vīraḥ saḥ śete nihataḥ paraiḥ
14. yena adya yuddhe bahavaḥ rākṣasāḥ kṣitau nihatāḥ,
saḥ vīraḥ adya tasyām eva kṣitau paraiḥ nihataḥ (san) śete.
14. The hero by whom many rākṣasas were killed on the ground in battle today, he now lies on that very ground, struck down by enemies.
शयानः शरतल्पे ऽस्मिन् स्वशोणितपरिप्लुतः ।
शरजालैश्चितो भाति भास्करो ऽस्तमिव व्रजन् ॥१५॥
15. śayānaḥ śaratalpe'smin svaśoṇitapariplutaḥ ,
śarajālaiścito bhāti bhāskaro'stamiva vrajan.
15. śayānaḥ śaratālpe asmin svaśoṇitapariplutaḥ
śarajālaiḥ citaḥ bhāti bhāskaraḥ astam iva vrajan
15. asmin śaratālpe śayānaḥ,
svaśoṇitapariplutaḥ,
śarajālaiḥ citaḥ (saḥ) bhāskaraḥ astam iva vrajan bhāti.
15. Lying on this bed of arrows, bathed in his own blood and covered by a network of arrows, he appears like the sun going to set.
बाणाभिहतमर्मत्वान्न शक्नोत्यभिवीक्षितुम् ।
रुजा चाब्रुवतो ह्यस्य दृष्टिरागेण सूच्यते ॥१६॥
16. bāṇābhihatamarmatvānna śaknotyabhivīkṣitum ,
rujā cābruvato hyasya dṛṣṭirāgeṇa sūcyate.
16. bāṇa-abhihata-marmatvāt na śaknoti abhivīkṣitum
rujā ca abruvataḥ hi asya dṛṣṭi-rāgeṇa sūcyate
16. bāṇa-abhihata-marmatvāt na abhivīkṣitum śaknoti.
hi asya abruvataḥ rujā ca dṛṣṭi-rāgeṇa sūcyate.
16. Due to his vital organs being struck by arrows, he is unable to see clearly. His pain, though not expressed verbally, is indicated by the redness in his eyes.
यथैव मां वनं यान्तमनुयातो महाद्युतिः ।
अहमप्यनुयास्यामि तथैवैनं यमक्षयम् ॥१७॥
17. yathaiva māṃ vanaṃ yāntamanuyāto mahādyutiḥ ,
ahamapyanuyāsyāmi tathaivainaṃ yamakṣayam.
17. yathā eva mām vanam yāntam anuyātaḥ mahādyutiḥ
aham api anuyāsyāmi tathā eva enam yama-kṣayam
17. yathā eva mahādyutiḥ mām vanam yāntam anuyātaḥ,
tathā eva aham api enam yama-kṣayam anuyāsyāmi.
17. Just as the exceedingly glorious one followed me when I went to the forest, so too I shall follow him to the abode of Yama.
इष्टबन्धुजनो नित्यं मां च नित्यमनुव्रतः ।
इमामद्य गतो ऽवस्थां ममानार्यस्य दुर्नयैः ॥१८॥
18. iṣṭabandhujano nityaṃ māṃ ca nityamanuvrataḥ ,
imāmadya gato'vasthāṃ mamānāryasya durnayaiḥ.
18. iṣṭa-bandhu-janaḥ nityam mām ca nityam anuvrataḥ
imām adya gataḥ avasthām mama anāryasya durnayaiḥ
18. iṣṭa-bandhu-janaḥ,
nityam mām ca nityam anuvrataḥ,
adya mama anāryasya durnayaiḥ imām avasthām gataḥ.
18. My beloved kinsman, who was always devoted to me, has today reached this state due to my ignoble misdeeds.
सुरुष्टेनापि वीरेण लक्ष्मणेना न संस्मरे ।
परुषं विप्रियं वापि श्रावितं न कदा चन ॥१९॥
19. suruṣṭenāpi vīreṇa lakṣmaṇenā na saṃsmare ,
paruṣaṃ vipriyaṃ vāpi śrāvitaṃ na kadā cana.
19. su-ruṣṭena api vīreṇa lakṣmaṇena na saṃsmare
paruṣam vipriyam vā api śrāvitam na kadā cana
19. su-ruṣṭena api vīreṇa lakṣmaṇena paruṣam vā vipriyam śrāvitam na kadā cana na saṃsmare.
19. Even from the greatly enraged hero Lakṣmaṇa, I do not recall ever hearing a harsh or disagreeable word.
विससर्जैकवेगेन पञ्चबाणशतानि यः ।
इष्वस्त्रेष्वधिकस्तस्मात् कार्तवीर्याच्च लक्ष्मणः ॥२०॥
20. visasarjaikavegena pañcabāṇaśatāni yaḥ ,
iṣvastreṣvadhikastasmāt kārtavīryācca lakṣmaṇaḥ.
20. visasarja eka-vegena pañca-bāṇa-śatāni yaḥ
iṣu-astresu adhikaḥ tasmāt kārtavīryāt ca lakṣmaṇaḥ
20. lakṣmaṇaḥ yaḥ eka-vegena pañca-bāṇa-śatāni
visasarja iṣu-astresu tasmāt kārtavīryāt ca adhikaḥ
20. Lakṣmaṇa is the one who discharged five hundred arrows with a single rapid motion, and he is superior in archery and weaponry even to Kārtavīrya.
अस्त्रैरस्त्राणि यो हन्याच्छक्रस्यापि महात्मनः ।
सो ऽयमुर्व्यांहतः शेते महार्हशयनोचितः ॥२१॥
21. astrairastrāṇi yo hanyācchakrasyāpi mahātmanaḥ ,
so'yamurvyāṃhataḥ śete mahārhaśayanocitaḥ.
21. astraiḥ astrāṇi yaḥ hanyāt śakrasya api mahātmanaḥ
saḥ ayam urvyām hataḥ śete mahārha-śayana-ucitaḥ
21. yaḥ mahātmanaḥ śakrasya api astraiḥ astrāṇi hanyāt
saḥ ayam mahārha-śayana-ucitaḥ urvyām hataḥ śete
21. This person, who could neutralize the weapons even of the great (mahātman) Indra (Śakra), now lies struck down on the ground, accustomed though he was to luxurious beds.
तच्च मिथ्या प्रलप्तं मां प्रधक्ष्यति न संशयः ।
यन्मया न कृतो राजा राक्षसानां विभीषणः ॥२२॥
22. tacca mithyā pralaptaṃ māṃ pradhakṣyati na saṃśayaḥ ,
yanmayā na kṛto rājā rākṣasānāṃ vibhīṣaṇaḥ.
22. tat ca mithyā pralaptam mām pradhakṣyati na saṃśayaḥ
yat mayā na kṛtaḥ rājā rākṣasānām vibhīṣaṇaḥ
22. tat ca mithyā pralaptam mām pradhakṣyati na saṃśayaḥ
yat mayā vibhīṣaṇaḥ rākṣasānām rājā na kṛtaḥ
22. And that false utterance will surely torment me; there is no doubt that I did not make Vibhīṣaṇa the king of the Rākṣasas.
अस्मिन्मुहूर्ते सुग्रीव प्रतियातुमितो ऽर्हसि ।
मत्वा हीनं मया राजन् रावणो ऽभिद्रवेद्बली ॥२३॥
23. asminmuhūrte sugrīva pratiyātumito'rhasi ,
matvā hīnaṃ mayā rājan rāvaṇo'bhidravedbalī.
23. asmin muhūrte sugrīva pratiyātum itaḥ arhasi
matvā hīnam mayā rājan rāvaṇaḥ abhidravet balī
23. sugrīva rājan asmin muhūrte itaḥ pratiyātum
arhasi mayā hīnam matvā balī rāvaṇaḥ abhidravet
23. O Sugrīva, you should return from here at this very moment, O King. Thinking me to be weakened, the mighty Rāvaṇa might attack.
अङ्गदं तु पुरस्कृत्य ससैन्यः ससुहृज्जनः ।
सागरं तर सुग्रीव पुनस्तेनैव सेतुना ॥२४॥
24. aṅgadaṃ tu puraskṛtya sasainyaḥ sasuhṛjjanaḥ ,
sāgaraṃ tara sugrīva punastenaiva setunā.
24. aṅgadam tu puraskṛtya sasainyaḥ sasuhṛjjanaḥ
sāgaram tara sugrīva punaḥ tena eva setunā
24. sugrīva aṅgadam puraskṛtya sasainyaḥ
sasuhṛjjanaḥ punaḥ tena eva setunā sāgaram tara
24. O Sugriva, leading with Angada, cross the ocean with your army and allies, using that very same bridge again.
कृतं हनुमता कार्यं यदन्यैर्दुष्करं रणे ।
ऋक्षराजेन तुष्यामि गोलाङ्गूलाधिपेन च ॥२५॥
25. kṛtaṃ hanumatā kāryaṃ yadanyairduṣkaraṃ raṇe ,
ṛkṣarājena tuṣyāmi golāṅgūlādhipena ca.
25. kṛtam hanumatā kāryam yat anyaiḥ duṣkaram
raṇe ṛkṣarājena tuṣyāmi golāṅgūlādhipena ca
25. hanumatā kṛtam kāryam yat anyaiḥ raṇe duṣkaram
ṛkṣarājena ca golāṅgūlādhipena ca tuṣyāmi
25. I am satisfied with the deed accomplished by Hanuman, which was difficult for others in battle, and also with the king of bears and the lord of the Golāngūlas.
अङ्गदेन कृतं कर्म मैन्देन द्विविदेन च ।
युद्धं केसरिणा संख्ये घोरं संपातिना कृतम् ॥२६॥
26. aṅgadena kṛtaṃ karma maindena dvividena ca ,
yuddhaṃ kesariṇā saṃkhye ghoraṃ saṃpātinā kṛtam.
26. aṅgadena kṛtam karma maindena dvividena ca
yuddham kesariṇā saṃkhye ghoram saṃpātinā kṛtam
26. aṅgadena maindena dvividena ca karma kṛtam
kesariṇā saṃpātinā ca saṃkhye ghoram yuddham kṛtam
26. Deeds were accomplished by Angada, Mainda, and Dvivida. A fierce battle was waged by Keśarin and Saṃpāti in the combat.
गवयेन गवाक्षेण शरभेण गजेन च ।
अन्यैश्च हरिभिर्युद्धं मदार्थे त्यक्तजीवितैः ॥२७॥
27. gavayena gavākṣeṇa śarabheṇa gajena ca ,
anyaiśca haribhiryuddhaṃ madārthe tyaktajīvitaiḥ.
27. gavayena gavākṣeṇa śarabheṇa gajena ca anyaiḥ
ca haribhiḥ yuddham madarthe tyaktajīvitaiḥ
27. gavayena gavākṣeṇa śarabheṇa gajena ca anyaiḥ
ca tyaktajīvitaiḥ haribhiḥ madarthe yuddham
27. Battle was fought for my sake by Gavaya, Gavākṣa, Śarabha, and Gaja, as well as by other Vānaras who sacrificed their lives.
न चातिक्रमितुं शक्यं दैवं सुग्रीव मानुषैः ।
यत्तु शक्यं वयस्येन सुहृदा वा परंतप ।
कृतं सुग्रीव तत् सर्वं भवताधर्मभीरुणा ॥२८॥
28. na cātikramituṃ śakyaṃ daivaṃ sugrīva mānuṣaiḥ ,
yattu śakyaṃ vayasyena suhṛdā vā paraṃtapa ,
kṛtaṃ sugrīva tat sarvaṃ bhavatādharmabhīruṇā.
28. na ca atikramitum śakyam daivam
sugrīva mānuṣaiḥ yat tu śakyam vayasyena
suhṛdā vā paraṃtapa kṛtam sugrīva
tat sarvam bhavatā adharmabhīruṇā
28. sugrīva paraṃtapa daivam mānuṣaiḥ
atikramitum na ca śakyam tu yat
vayasyena vā suhṛdā śakyam tat sarvam
adharmabhīruṇā bhavatā kṛtam sugrīva
28. O Sugriva, humans cannot overcome divine will. However, all that a friend or a well-wisher could possibly do, O scorcher of foes, has been accomplished by you, O Sugriva, who fears unrighteousness (adharma).
मित्रकार्यं कृतमिदं भवद्भिर्वानरर्षभाः ।
अनुज्ञाता मया सर्वे यथेष्टं गन्तुमर्हथ ॥२९॥
29. mitrakāryaṃ kṛtamidaṃ bhavadbhirvānararṣabhāḥ ,
anujñātā mayā sarve yatheṣṭaṃ gantumarhatha.
29. mitrakāryam kṛtam idam bhavadbhiḥ vānararṣabhāḥ
anujñātāḥ mayā sarve yathā iṣṭam gantum arhatha
29. vānararṣabhāḥ idam mitrakāryam kṛtam bhavadbhiḥ
mayā sarve anujñātāḥ yathā iṣṭam gantum arhatha
29. This task for a friend has been accomplished by you, O chief among monkeys. All of you are now permitted by me to go as you wish.
शुश्रुवुस्तस्य ते सर्वे वानराः परिदेवितम् ।
वर्तयां चक्रुरश्रूणि नेत्रैः कृष्णेतरेक्षणाः ॥३०॥
30. śuśruvustasya te sarve vānarāḥ paridevitam ,
vartayāṃ cakruraśrūṇi netraiḥ kṛṣṇetarekṣaṇāḥ.
30. śuśruvuḥ tasya te sarve vānarāḥ paridevitam
vartayām cakruḥ aśrūṇi netraiḥ kṛṣṇetarekṣaṇāḥ
30. te sarve vānarāḥ kṛṣṇetarekṣaṇāḥ tasya paridevitam
śuśruvuḥ netraiḥ aśrūṇi vartayām cakruḥ
30. All those monkeys heard his lamentation, and with their eyes reddened, they shed tears.
ततः सर्वाण्यनीकानि स्थापयित्वा विभीषणः ।
आजगाम गदापाणिस्त्वरितो यत्र राघवः ॥३१॥
31. tataḥ sarvāṇyanīkāni sthāpayitvā vibhīṣaṇaḥ ,
ājagāma gadāpāṇistvarito yatra rāghavaḥ.
31. tataḥ sarvāṇi anīkāni sthāpayitvā vibhīṣaṇaḥ
ājagāma gadāpāṇiḥ tvaritaḥ yatra rāghavaḥ
31. tataḥ vibhīṣaṇaḥ sarvāṇi anīkāni sthāpayitvā
gadāpāṇiḥ tvaritaḥ yatra rāghavaḥ ājagāma
31. Then Vibhishana, after positioning all the armies, quickly came, mace in hand, to where Rama (Raghava) was.
तं दृष्ट्वा त्वरितं यान्तं नीलाञ्जनचयोपमम् ।
वानरा दुद्रुवुः सर्वे मन्यमानास्तु रावणिम् ॥३२॥
32. taṃ dṛṣṭvā tvaritaṃ yāntaṃ nīlāñjanacayopamam ,
vānarā dudruvuḥ sarve manyamānāstu rāvaṇim.

vānarāḥ dudruvuḥ sarve manyamānāḥ tu rāvaṇim
32. vānarāḥ sarve tam nīlāñjanacayopamam tvaritam
yāntam dṛṣṭvā rāvaṇim manyamānāḥ tu dudruvuḥ
32. Upon seeing him, swiftly moving and resembling a mass of black collyrium, all the monkeys fled, believing him to be Rāvaṇa's son.
