निदर्शयित्वा रामाय सीतायाः प्रतिपादने ।

1. Kabandha, who was insightful (artha-jña), after explaining to Rama the means for Sita's recovery, spoke again with pertinent words.
एष राम शिवः पन्था यत्रैते पुष्पिता द्रुमाः ।
प्रतीचीं दिशमाश्रित्य प्रकाशन्ते मनोरमाः ॥२॥
2. eṣa rāma śivaḥ panthā yatraite puṣpitā drumāḥ ,
pratīcīṃ diśamāśritya prakāśante manoramāḥ.

2. O Rama, this is the auspicious path where these charming, blooming trees, facing the western direction, are visible.
जम्बूप्रियालपनसाः प्लक्षन्यग्रोधतिन्दुकाः ।
अश्वत्थाः कर्णिकाराश्च चूताश्चान्ये च पादपाः ॥३॥
3. jambūpriyālapanasāḥ plakṣanyagrodhatindukāḥ ,
aśvatthāḥ karṇikārāśca cūtāścānye ca pādapāḥ.

3. Jamun, piyāla, and jackfruit trees; plakṣa, banyan, and tinduka trees; sacred fig trees, karṇikāra trees, mango trees, and other trees (are there).
तानारुह्याथ वा भूमौ पातयित्वा च तान्बलात् ।
फलान्यमृतकल्पानि भक्षयन्तौ गमिष्यथः ॥४॥
4. tānāruhyātha vā bhūmau pātayitvā ca tānbalāt ,
phalānyamṛtakalpāni bhakṣayantau gamiṣyathaḥ.

4. Climbing them, or forcefully felling them to the ground, and eating fruits comparable to nectar, you two will go forth.
चङ्क्रमन्तौ वरान्देशाञ् शैलाच्छैलं वनाद्वनम् ।
ततः पुष्करिणीं वीरौ पम्पां नाम गमिष्यथः ॥५॥
5. caṅkramantau varāndeśāñ śailācchailaṃ vanādvanam ,
tataḥ puṣkariṇīṃ vīrau pampāṃ nāma gamiṣyathaḥ.

5. Wandering through excellent regions, from mountain to mountain, from forest to forest, you two heroes will then reach a lotus pond named Pampā.
अशर्करामविभ्रंशां समतीर्थमशैवलाम् ।
राम संजातवालूकां कमलोत्पलशोभिताम् ॥६॥
6. aśarkarāmavibhraṃśāṃ samatīrthamaśaivalām ,
rāma saṃjātavālūkāṃ kamalotpalaśobhitām.

6. O Rāma, (a pond) without gravel, without decay, with even banks, without moss, where sand has naturally formed, and adorned with lotuses and water lilies.
तत्र हंसाः प्लवाः क्रौञ्चाः कुरराश्चैव राघव ।
वल्गुस्वरा निकूजन्ति पम्पासलिलगोचराः ॥७॥
7. tatra haṃsāḥ plavāḥ krauñcāḥ kurarāścaiva rāghava ,
valgusvarā nikūjanti pampāsalilagocarāḥ.

7. O Raghava, there, swans, ducks, cranes, and curlews with sweet voices sing beautifully as they move about in the waters of Pampa.
नोद्विजन्ते नरान्दृष्ट्वा वधस्याकोविदाः शुभाः ।
घृतपिण्डोपमान् स्थूलांस्तान्द्विजान्भक्षयिष्यथः ॥८॥
8. nodvijante narāndṛṣṭvā vadhasyākovidāḥ śubhāḥ ,
ghṛtapiṇḍopamān sthūlāṃstāndvijānbhakṣayiṣyathaḥ.
8. na udvijante narān dṛṣṭvā vadhasya akovidāḥ śubhāḥ
ghṛtapiṇḍopamān sthūlān tān dvijān bhakṣayiṣyathaḥ

8. These beautiful birds, unaware of killing, are not alarmed by seeing humans. You two will eat those plump birds (dvija), which resemble lumps of ghee.
रोहितान् वक्रतुण्डांश्च नलमीनांश्च राघव ।
पम्पायामिषुभिर्मत्स्यांस्तत्र राम वरान् हतान् ॥९॥
9. rohitān vakratuṇḍāṃśca nalamīnāṃśca rāghava ,
pampāyāmiṣubhirmatsyāṃstatra rāma varān hatān.

9. O Raghava, O Rama, there in Pampa, you will find excellent fish slain by arrows – rohita, crooked-mouthed, and reed fish.
निस्त्वक्पक्षानयस्तप्तानकृशानेककण्टकान् ।
तव भक्त्या समायुक्तो लक्ष्मणः संप्रदास्यति ॥१०॥
10. nistvakpakṣānayastaptānakṛśānekakaṇṭakān ,
tava bhaktyā samāyukto lakṣmaṇaḥ saṃpradāsyati.
10. nistvakpakṣān ayastaptān akṛśān ekakaṇṭakān
tava bhaktyā samāyuktaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ saṃpradāsyati

10. Lakshmana, filled with devotion (bhakti) for you, will present those fish, skinned and finless, roasted on an iron spit, plump, and having only one bone.
भृशं ते खादतो मत्स्यान्पम्पायाः पुष्पसंचये ।
पद्मगन्धि शिवं वारि सुखशीतमनामयम् ॥११॥
11. bhṛśaṃ te khādato matsyānpampāyāḥ puṣpasaṃcaye ,
padmagandhi śivaṃ vāri sukhaśītamanāmayam.
11. bhṛśam te khādataḥ matsyān pampāyāḥ puṣpasaṃcaye
| padmagandhi śivam vāri sukhaśītam anāmayam
11. te pampāyāḥ puṣpasaṃcaye bhṛśam matsyān khādataḥ [santi]
[tatra] padmagandhi śivam sukhaśītam anāmayam vāri [asti]
11. For you, there will be the intense sight of creatures eating fish amidst the flower-laden banks of Pampa. Its water is lotus-fragrant, pure, pleasantly cool, and wholesome.
उद्धृत्य स तदाक्लिष्टं रूप्यस्फटिकसंनिभम् ।
अथ पुष्करपर्णेन लक्ष्मणः पाययिष्यति ॥१२॥
12. uddhṛtya sa tadākliṣṭaṃ rūpyasphaṭikasaṃnibham ,
atha puṣkaraparṇena lakṣmaṇaḥ pāyayiṣyati.
12. uddhṛtya sa tadā akliṣṭam rūpyasphaṭikasaṃnibham
| atha puṣkaraparṇena lakṣmaṇaḥ pāyayisyati

12. Having then drawn out that clear water, which resembles silver and crystal, Lakṣmaṇa will thereupon give [you] to drink with a lotus leaf.
स्थूलान् गिरिगुहाशय्यान् वराहान् वनचारिणः ।
अपां लोभादुपावृत्तान् वृषभानिव नर्दतः ।
रूपान्वितांश्च पम्पायां द्रक्ष्यसि त्वं नरोत्तम ॥१३॥
13. sthūlān giriguhāśayyān varāhān vanacāriṇaḥ ,
apāṃ lobhādupāvṛttān vṛṣabhāniva nardataḥ ,
rūpānvitāṃśca pampāyāṃ drakṣyasi tvaṃ narottama.

13. O best of men, you will see in Pampa stout wild boars, accustomed to lying in mountain caves and roaming the forest, which return [to the water] out of a desire for water and roar like bulls. You will also see other creatures endowed with beautiful forms.
सायाह्ने विचरन् राम विटपी माल्यधारिणः ।
शीतोदकं च पम्पायां दृष्ट्वा शोकं विहास्यसि ॥१४॥
14. sāyāhne vicaran rāma viṭapī mālyadhāriṇaḥ ,
śītodakaṃ ca pampāyāṃ dṛṣṭvā śokaṃ vihāsyasi.

śītodakam ca pampāyām dṛṣṭvā śokam vihāsyasi

14. O Rama, in the evening, as you wander, having seen the garland-bearing trees and the cool water in Pampa, you will cast away your sorrow.
सुमनोभिश्चितांस्तत्र तिलकान्नक्तमालकान् ।
उत्पलानि च फुल्लानि पङ्कजानि च राघव ॥१५॥
15. sumanobhiścitāṃstatra tilakānnaktamālakān ,
utpalāni ca phullāni paṅkajāni ca rāghava.
15. sumanobhiḥ citān tatra tilakān naktamālakān
utpalāni ca phullāni paṅkajāni ca rāghava
15. rāghava tatra sumanobhiḥ citān tilakān naktamālakān

15. O Raghava, there were Tilaka and Naktamalaka flowers, strewn with fragrant blossoms, along with blooming blue and pink lotuses.
न तानि कश्चिन्माल्यानि तत्रारोपयिता नरः ।
मतङ्गशिष्यास्तत्रासन्नृषयः सुसमाहितः ॥१६॥
16. na tāni kaścinmālyāni tatrāropayitā naraḥ ,
mataṅgaśiṣyāstatrāsannṛṣayaḥ susamāhitaḥ.
16. na tāni kaścit mālyāni tatra āropayitā naraḥ
matangaśiṣyāḥ tatra āsan ṛṣayaḥ susamāhitaḥ
16. kaścit naraḥ tāni mālyāni tatra na āropayitā (āsīt).
tatra matangaśiṣyāḥ ṛṣayaḥ susamāhitaḥ āsan.
16. No man had placed those garlands there. The sages, disciples of Matanga, were present there, profoundly concentrated.
तेषां भाराभितप्तानां वन्यमाहरतां गुरोः ।
ये प्रपेतुर्महीं तूर्णं शरीरात् स्वेदबिन्दवः ॥१७॥
17. teṣāṃ bhārābhitaptānāṃ vanyamāharatāṃ guroḥ ,
ye prapeturmahīṃ tūrṇaṃ śarīrāt svedabindavaḥ.

ye prapetuḥ mahīm tūrṇam śarīrāt svedabindavaḥ

17. Of those disciples who were exhausted from the burden of gathering forest produce for their guru, the drops of sweat that quickly fell from their bodies to the ground -
तानि माल्यानि जातानि मुनीनां तपसा तदा ।
स्वेदबिन्दुसमुत्थानि न विनश्यन्ति राघव ॥१८॥
18. tāni mālyāni jātāni munīnāṃ tapasā tadā ,
svedabindusamutthāni na vinaśyanti rāghava.

18. O Raghava, those garlands, which originated then from the drops of sweat of those sages through their spiritual discipline (tapas), do not perish.
तेषामद्यापि तत्रैव दृश्यते परिचारिणी ।
श्रमणी शबरी नाम काकुत्स्थ चिरजीविनी ॥१९॥
19. teṣāmadyāpi tatraiva dṛśyate paricāriṇī ,
śramaṇī śabarī nāma kākutstha cirajīvinī.
19. teṣām adya api tatra eva dṛśyate paricāriṇī
śramaṇī śabarī nāma kākutstha cirajīvinī

19. O Kakutstha, even today, their long-lived female attendant (paricāriṇī), the ascetic (śramaṇī) named Shabari, is seen right there.
त्वां तु धर्मे स्थिता नित्यं सर्वभूतनमस्कृतम् ।
दृष्ट्वा देवोपमं राम स्वर्गलोकं गमिष्यति ॥२०॥
20. tvāṃ tu dharme sthitā nityaṃ sarvabhūtanamaskṛtam ,
dṛṣṭvā devopamaṃ rāma svargalokaṃ gamiṣyati.
20. tvām tu dharme sthitā nityam sarvabhūtanamaskṛtam
dṛṣṭvā devopamam rāma svargalokam gamiṣyati
20. rāma tvām devopamam sarvabhūtanamaskṛtam dṛṣṭvā tu
dharme nityam sthitā (sā) svargalokam gamiṣyati
20. O Rama, she, who is always steadfast in her virtuous principles (dharma) and revered by all beings, will attain the celestial world after seeing you, who are like a god.
ततस्तद् राम पम्पायास्तीरमाश्रित्य पश्चिमम् ।
आश्रमस्थानमतुलं गुह्यं काकुत्स्थ पश्यसि ॥२१॥
21. tatastad rāma pampāyāstīramāśritya paścimam ,
āśramasthānamatulaṃ guhyaṃ kākutstha paśyasi.
21. tataḥ tat rāma pampāyāḥ tīram āśritya paścimam
āśramasthānam atulam guhyam kākutstha paśyasi
21. rāma kākutstha tataḥ paścimam pampāyāḥ tīram
āśritya tat atulam guhyam āśramasthānam paśyasi
21. Thereafter, O Rama, O Kakutstha, having approached the western bank of Lake Pampa, you will behold that unequalled and secluded hermitage site (āśramasthāna).
न तत्राक्रमितुं नागाः शक्नुवन्ति तमाश्रमम् ।
ऋषेस्तस्य मतङ्गस्य विधानात्तच्च काननम् ॥२२॥
22. na tatrākramituṃ nāgāḥ śaknuvanti tamāśramam ,
ṛṣestasya mataṅgasya vidhānāttacca kānanam.
22. na tatra ākramitum nāgāḥ śaknuvanti tam āśramam
ṛṣeḥ tasya matangasya vidhānāt tat ca kānam
22. tatra nāgāḥ tam āśramam ākramitum na śaknuvanti ca ṛṣeḥ
tasya matangasya vidhānāt tat kānam (api tathā eva asti)
22. There, serpents are unable to enter that hermitage. And that forest (kānana) too is thus (inaccessible) by the ordinance (vidhāna) of that sage Matanga.
तस्मिन्नन्दनसंकाशे देवारण्योपमे वने ।
नानाविहगसंकीर्णे रंस्यसे राम निर्वृतः ॥२३॥
23. tasminnandanasaṃkāśe devāraṇyopame vane ,
nānāvihagasaṃkīrṇe raṃsyase rāma nirvṛtaḥ.
23. tasmin nandanasaṃkāśe devāraṇyopame vane
nānāvihagasaṃkīrṇe raṃsyase rāma nirvṛtaḥ
23. rāma tasmin nandanasaṃkāśe devāraṇyopame

23. O Rama, in that forest, which resembles the Nandana garden and is comparable to a divine forest, teeming with various birds, you will enjoy yourself, content.
ऋष्यमूकस्तु पम्पायाः पुरस्तात् पुष्पितद्रुमः ।
सुदुःखारोहणो नाम शिशुनागाभिरक्षितः ।
उदारो ब्रह्मणा चैव पूर्वकाले विनिर्मितः ॥२४॥
24. ṛṣyamūkastu pampāyāḥ purastāt puṣpitadrumaḥ ,
suduḥkhārohaṇo nāma śiśunāgābhirakṣitaḥ ,
udāro brahmaṇā caiva pūrvakāle vinirmitaḥ.
24. ṛṣyamūkaḥ tu pampāyāḥ purastāt
puṣpitadrumaḥ suduḥkhārohaṇaḥ nāma
śiśunāgābhirakṣitaḥ udāraḥ
brahmaṇā ca eva pūrvakāle vinirmitaḥ

24. However, to the east of Pampa (Lake), stands Rishyamuka, a mountain with blossoming trees. It is known by the name 'Suduḥkhārohaṇa' (Very Difficult to Ascend) and is guarded by young Nāgas. Indeed, it was magnificently created by Brahma (brahman) in ancient times.
शयानः पुरुषो राम तस्य शैलस्य मूर्धनि ।
यत् स्वप्ने लभते वित्तं तत् प्रबुद्धो ऽधिगच्छति ॥२५॥
25. śayānaḥ puruṣo rāma tasya śailasya mūrdhani ,
yat svapne labhate vittaṃ tat prabuddho'dhigacchati.
25. śayānaḥ puruṣaḥ rāma tasya śailasya mūrdhani yat
svapne labhate vittam tat prabuddhaḥ adhigacchati
25. rāma tasya śailasya mūrdhani śayānaḥ puruṣaḥ yat

25. O Rama, any person (puruṣa) who lies down on the summit of that mountain attains in their waking state whatever wealth they may acquire in a dream.
न त्वेनं विषमाचारः पापकर्माधिरोहति ।
तत्रैव प्रहरन्त्येनं सुप्तमादाय राक्षसाः ॥२६॥
26. na tvenaṃ viṣamācāraḥ pāpakarmādhirohati ,
tatraiva praharantyenaṃ suptamādāya rākṣasāḥ.
26. na tu enam viṣamācāraḥ pāpakarmā adhirohati
tatra eva praharanti enam suptam ādāya rākṣasāḥ
26. tu viṣamācāraḥ pāpakarmā enam na adhirohati
tatra eva rākṣasāḥ suptam enam ādāya praharanti
26. However, a person of unrighteous conduct (viṣamācāra) and evil deeds (karma) does not ascend this (mountain). Indeed, right there, Rākṣasas seize him while he is sleeping and strike him.
ततो ऽपि शिशुनागानामाक्रन्दः श्रूयते महान् ।
क्रीडतां राम पम्पायां मतङ्गारण्यवासिनाम् ॥२७॥
27. tato'pi śiśunāgānāmākrandaḥ śrūyate mahān ,
krīḍatāṃ rāma pampāyāṃ mataṅgāraṇyavāsinām.
27. tataḥ api śiśunāgānām ākrandaḥ śrūyate mahān
krīḍatām rāma pampāyām mataṅgāraṇyavāsinām
27. rāma tataḥ api pampāyām mataṅgāraṇyavāsinām

27. O Rama, from that very place, a great cry is heard from young elephants playing in Lake Pampa, those who reside in the Matanga forest.
सिक्ता रुधिरधाराभिः संहत्य परमद्विपाः ।
प्रचरन्ति पृथक्कीर्णा मेघवर्णास्तरस्विनः ॥२८॥
28. siktā rudhiradhārābhiḥ saṃhatya paramadvipāḥ ,
pracaranti pṛthakkīrṇā meghavarṇāstarasvinaḥ.

28. The mighty, cloud-colored, powerful elephants, drenched with streams of blood from battle, now roam about, scattered separately.
ते तत्र पीत्वा पानीयं विमलं शीतमव्ययम् ।
निवृत्ताः संविगाहन्ते वनानि वनगोचराः ॥२९॥
29. te tatra pītvā pānīyaṃ vimalaṃ śītamavyayam ,
nivṛttāḥ saṃvigāhante vanāni vanagocarāḥ.
29. te tatra pītvā pānīyam vimalam śītam avyayam
nivṛttāḥ saṃvigāhante vanāni vanagocarāḥ
29. te vanagocarāḥ tatra vimalam śītam avyayam
pānīyam pītvā nivṛttāḥ vanāni saṃvigāhante
29. Those forest-dwellers, having drunk pure, cool, and inexhaustible water there, turn back and enter the forests.
राम तस्य तु शैलस्य महती शोभते गुहा ।
शिलापिधाना काकुत्स्थ दुःखं चास्याः प्रवेशनम् ॥३०॥
30. rāma tasya tu śailasya mahatī śobhate guhā ,
śilāpidhānā kākutstha duḥkhaṃ cāsyāḥ praveśanam.

30. O Rama, O Kakutstha, a magnificent cave of that mountain is truly splendid. It is concealed by a stone, and its entrance is difficult.
तस्या गुहायाः प्राग्द्वारे महाञ् शीतोदको ह्रदः ।
बहुमूलफलो रम्यो नानानगसमावृतः ॥३१॥
31. tasyā guhāyāḥ prāgdvāre mahāñ śītodako hradaḥ ,
bahumūlaphalo ramyo nānānagasamāvṛtaḥ.

31. At the eastern entrance of that cave, there is a large, cold-water lake. It is delightful, rich in many roots and fruits, and surrounded by various trees.
तस्यां वसति सुग्रीवश्चतुर्भिः सह वानरैः ।
कदा चिच्छिखरे तस्य पर्वतस्यावतिष्ठते ॥३२॥
32. tasyāṃ vasati sugrīvaścaturbhiḥ saha vānaraiḥ ,
kadā cicchikhare tasya parvatasyāvatiṣṭhate.
32. tasyām vasati sugrīvaḥ caturbhiḥ saha vānaraiḥ
kadā cit śikhare tasya parvatasya avatiṣṭhate
32. sugrīvaḥ tasyām caturbhiḥ vānaraiḥ saha vasati
kadā cit tasya parvatasya śikhare avatiṣṭhate
32. Sugriva lives there (in that cave) with four monkeys. Sometimes he (Sugriva) stays on the peak of that mountain.
कबन्धस्त्वनुशास्यैवं ताव् उभौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ।
स्रग्वी भास्करवर्णाभः खे व्यरोचत वीर्यवान् ॥३३॥
33. kabandhastvanuśāsyaivaṃ tāv ubhau rāmalakṣmaṇau ,
sragvī bhāskaravarṇābhaḥ khe vyarocata vīryavān.
33. kabandhaḥ tu anuśāsya evam tau ubhau rāmalakṣmaṇau
sragvī bhāskaravarṇābhaḥ khe vyarocata vīryavān
33. kabandhaḥ tu evam tau ubhau rāmalakṣmaṇau anuśāsya
sragvī bhāskaravarṇābhaḥ vīryavān khe vyarocata
33. Having thus instructed both Rama and Lakshmana, Kabandha, who was garlanded, shining with the color of the sun, and powerful, ascended and shone brightly in the sky.
तं तु खस्थं महाभागं कबन्धं रामलक्ष्मणौ ।
प्रस्थितौ त्वं व्रजस्वेति वाक्यमूचतुरन्तिकात् ॥३४॥
34. taṃ tu khasthaṃ mahābhāgaṃ kabandhaṃ rāmalakṣmaṇau ,
prasthitau tvaṃ vrajasveti vākyamūcaturantikāt.
34. tam tu khastam mahābhāgam kabandham rāmalakṣmaṇau
prasthitau tvam vrajasva iti vākyam ūcatuḥ antikāt
34. prasthitau rāmalakṣmaṇau tu antikāt tam khastam
mahābhāgam kabandham "tvam vrajasva" iti vākyam ūcatuḥ
34. Then, from nearby, Rama and Lakshmana, having set out (on their journey), spoke this statement to the glorious Kabandha, who was now established in the sky: "You should go forth!"
गम्यतां कार्यसिद्ध्यर्थमिति तावब्रवीच्च सः ।
सुप्रीतौ तावनुज्ञाप्य कबन्धः प्रस्थितस्तदा ॥३५॥
35. gamyatāṃ kāryasiddhyarthamiti tāvabravīcca saḥ ,
suprītau tāvanujñāpya kabandhaḥ prasthitastadā.
35. gamyatām kāryasiddhyartham iti tau abravīt ca saḥ
suprītau tau anujñāpya kabandhaḥ prasthitaḥ tadā
35. saḥ ca tau abravīt iti kāryasiddhyartham gamyatām.
tadā kabandhaḥ suprītau tau anujñāpya prasthitaḥ
35. And he (Kabandha) said to them, "Go forth for the accomplishment of your purpose." Then, having received permission from those two (Rama and Lakshmana), who were greatly pleased, Kabandha departed.
स तत् कबन्धः प्रतिपद्य रूपं वृतः श्रिया भास्करतुल्यदेहः ।
निदर्शयन् राममवेक्ष्य खस्थः सख्यं कुरुष्वेति तदाभ्युवाच ॥३६॥
36. sa tat kabandhaḥ pratipadya rūpaṃ vṛtaḥ śriyā bhāskaratulyadehaḥ ,
nidarśayan rāmamavekṣya khasthaḥ sakhyaṃ kuruṣveti tadābhyuvāca.
36. saḥ tat kabandhaḥ pratipadya rūpam
vṛtaḥ śriyā bhāskaratulyadehaḥ
nidarśayan rāmam avekṣya khasthaḥ
sakhyam kuruṣva iti tadā abhyuvāca
36. tadā saḥ kabandhaḥ rūpam pratipadya
śriyā vṛtaḥ bhāskaratulyadehaḥ
khasthaḥ rāmam avekṣya nidarśayan
iti abhyuvāca sakhyam kuruṣva
36. Kabandha then regained his form, endowed with splendor and a body like the sun, and, standing in the sky, he looked at Rama and said, "Make friendship (sakhya) with Sugriva!"
