सुमाली वरलब्धांस्तु ज्ञात्वा तान् वै निशाचरान् ।
उदतिष्ठद्भयं त्यक्त्वा सानुगः स रसातलात् ॥१॥

1. Sumali, realizing that those night-roamers (niśācarān) had indeed obtained boons, rose up from Rasātala with his followers, casting aside fear.
मारीचश्च प्रहस्तश्च विरूपाक्षो महोदरः ।
उदतिष्ठन् सुसंरब्धाः सचिवास्तस्य रक्षसः ॥२॥
2. mārīcaśca prahastaśca virūpākṣo mahodaraḥ ,
udatiṣṭhan susaṃrabdhāḥ sacivāstasya rakṣasaḥ.

2. Maricha, Prahasta, Virupaksha, and Mahodara, who were the highly enraged ministers of that rākṣasa (demon) (rakṣasaḥ), rose up.
सुमाली चैव तैः सर्वैर्वृतो राक्षसपुंगवैः ।
अभिगम्य दशग्रीवं परिष्वज्येदमब्रवीत् ॥३॥
3. sumālī caiva taiḥ sarvairvṛto rākṣasapuṃgavaiḥ ,
abhigamya daśagrīvaṃ pariṣvajyedamabravīt.

3. Sumālī, surrounded by all those chief rākṣasas, approached Daśagrīva, embraced him, and spoke this.
दिष्ट्या ते पुत्रसंप्राप्तश्चिन्तितो ऽयं मनोरथः ।
यस्त्वं त्रिभुवणश्रेष्ठाल् लब्धवान् वरमीदृशम् ॥४॥
4. diṣṭyā te putrasaṃprāptaścintito'yaṃ manorathaḥ ,
yastvaṃ tribhuvaṇaśreṣṭhāl labdhavān varamīdṛśam.
4. diṣṭyā te putrasamprāptaḥ cintitaḥ ayam manorathaḥ
yat tvam tribhuvanśreṣṭhāt labdhavān varam īdṛśam

4. Fortunately, your son has achieved this desired wish, in that you have obtained such a boon from the foremost of the three worlds.
यत्कृते च वयं लङ्कां त्यक्त्वा याता रसातलम् ।
तद्गतं नो महाबाहो महद्विष्णुकृतं भयम् ॥५॥
5. yatkṛte ca vayaṃ laṅkāṃ tyaktvā yātā rasātalam ,
tadgataṃ no mahābāho mahadviṣṇukṛtaṃ bhayam.
5. yat kṛte ca vayam laṅkām tyaktvā yātā rasātalam
tat gatam naḥ mahābāho mahat viṣṇukṛtam bhayam
5. yat kṛte ca vayam laṅkām tyaktvā rasātalam yātā
he mahābāho tat viṣṇukṛtam mahat bhayam naḥ gatam
5. For which reason, we abandoned Laṅkā and went to the netherworld (rasātalam). O mighty-armed one, that great fear caused by Viṣṇu has now departed from us.
असकृत्तेन भग्ना हि परित्यज्य स्वमालयम् ।
विद्रुताः सहिताः सर्वे प्रविष्टाः स्म रसातलम् ॥६॥
6. asakṛttena bhagnā hi parityajya svamālayam ,
vidrutāḥ sahitāḥ sarve praviṣṭāḥ sma rasātalam.
6. asakṛt tena bhagnā hi parityajya svam ālayam
vidrutāḥ sahitāḥ sarve praviṣṭāḥ sma rasātalam
6. hi asakṛt tena bhagnāḥ svam ālayam parityajya
sahitāḥ sarve vidrutāḥ rasātalam praviṣṭāḥ sma
6. Indeed, broken by him repeatedly, we all, united, abandoned our own dwelling and fled, entering the netherworld (rasātalam).
अस्मदीया च लङ्केयं नगरी राक्षसोषिता ।
निवेशिता तव भ्रात्रा धनाध्यक्षेण धीमता ॥७॥
7. asmadīyā ca laṅkeyaṃ nagarī rākṣasoṣitā ,
niveśitā tava bhrātrā dhanādhyakṣeṇa dhīmatā.
7. asmadīyā ca laṅkā iyam nagarī rākṣasa-uṣitā
niveśitā tava bhrātrā dhana-adhyakṣeṇa dhīmatā
7. iyam laṅkā asmadīyā ca rākṣasa-uṣitā nagarī
tava dhīmatā bhrātrā dhana-adhyakṣeṇa niveśitā
7. This city of Lanka, which belongs to us and is inhabited by rākṣasas, was founded by your intelligent brother, the lord of wealth (Kubera).
यदि नामात्र शक्यं स्यात् साम्ना दानेन वानघ ।
तरसा वा महाबाहो प्रत्यानेतुं कृतं भवेत् ॥८॥
8. yadi nāmātra śakyaṃ syāt sāmnā dānena vānagha ,
tarasā vā mahābāho pratyānetuṃ kṛtaṃ bhavet.
8. yadi na atra śakyam syāt sāmnā dānena vā anagha
tarasā vā mahābāho prati-ānetum kṛtam bhavet
8. anagha mahābāho yadi atra sāmnā vā dānena vā
prati-ānetum na śakyam syāt (tarhi) tarasā kṛtam bhavet
8. O sinless one! O mighty-armed one! If it is not possible to recover it here by conciliation or by gifts (dāna), then it should be accomplished by force.
त्वं च लङ्केश्वरस्तात भविष्यसि न संशयः ।
सर्वेषां नः प्रभुश्चैव भविष्यसि महाबल ॥९॥
9. tvaṃ ca laṅkeśvarastāta bhaviṣyasi na saṃśayaḥ ,
sarveṣāṃ naḥ prabhuścaiva bhaviṣyasi mahābala.
9. tvam ca laṅkā-īśvaraḥ tāta bhaviṣyasi na saṃśayaḥ
sarveṣām naḥ prabhuḥ ca eva bhaviṣyasi mahābala
9. tāta tvam ca laṅkā-īśvaraḥ bhaviṣyasi na saṃśayaḥ (asti)
mahābala tvam ca eva sarveṣām naḥ prabhuḥ bhaviṣyasi
9. And you, dear one, will be the lord of Lanka, there is no doubt. And you will certainly be the master of all of us, O mighty one!
अथाब्रवीद्दशग्रीवो मातामहमुपस्थितम् ।
वित्तेशो गुरुरस्माकं नार्हस्येवं प्रभाषितुम् ॥१०॥
10. athābravīddaśagrīvo mātāmahamupasthitam ,
vitteśo gururasmākaṃ nārhasyevaṃ prabhāṣitum.
10. atha abravīt daśagrīvaḥ mātāmaham upasthitam
vitta-īśaḥ guruḥ asmakam na arhasi evam prabhāṣitum
10. atha daśagrīvaḥ upasthitam mātāmaham abravīt vitta-īśaḥ
asmākam guruḥ (asti) tvam evam prabhāṣitum na arhasi
10. Then Daśagrīva (Rāvaṇa) spoke to his maternal grandfather, who was present: 'The lord of wealth (Kubera) is our teacher (guru); you ought not to speak in this manner.'
उक्तवन्तं तथा वाक्यं दशग्रीवं निशाचरः ।
प्रहस्तः प्रश्रितं वाक्यमिदमाह सकारणम् ॥११॥
11. uktavantaṃ tathā vākyaṃ daśagrīvaṃ niśācaraḥ ,
prahastaḥ praśritaṃ vākyamidamāha sakāraṇam.
11. uktavantam tathā vākyam daśagrīvam niśācaraḥ
prahastaḥ praśritam vākyam idam āha sakāraṇam
11. To Daśagrīva, who had thus spoken, the night-stalker Prahasta spoke these respectful words, giving reasons.
दशग्रीव महाबाहो नार्हस्त्वं वक्तुमीदृशम् ।
सौभ्रात्रं नास्ति शूराणां शृणु चेदं वचो मम ॥१२॥
12. daśagrīva mahābāho nārhastvaṃ vaktumīdṛśam ,
saubhrātraṃ nāsti śūrāṇāṃ śṛṇu cedaṃ vaco mama.
12. daśagrīva mahābāho na arhasi tvam vaktum īdṛśam
saubhrātram na asti śūrāṇām śṛṇu ca idam vacaḥ mama
12. O Daśagrīva, mighty-armed one, you should not speak such words. There is no true brotherhood among heroes; listen to these words of mine.
अदितिश्च दितिश्चैव भगिन्यौ सहिते किल ।
भार्ये परमरूपिण्यौ कश्यपस्य प्रजापतेः ॥१३॥
13. aditiśca ditiścaiva bhaginyau sahite kila ,
bhārye paramarūpiṇyau kaśyapasya prajāpateḥ.
13. aditiḥ ca ditiḥ ca eva bhaginyau sahite kila
bhārye paramarūpiṇyau kaśyapasya prajāpateḥ
13. Indeed, Aditi and Diti were two sisters, united. They were the exceedingly beautiful wives of Kaśyapa, the lord of creation (prajāpati).
अदितिर्जनयामास देवांस्त्रिभुवणेश्वरान् ।
दितिस्त्वजनयद्दैत्यान् कश्यपस्यात्मसंभवान् ॥१४॥
14. aditirjanayāmāsa devāṃstribhuvaṇeśvarān ,
ditistvajanayaddaityān kaśyapasyātmasaṃbhavān.
14. aditiḥ janayāmāsa devān tribhuvaneśvarān ditiḥ
tu ajanayāt daityān kaśyapasya ātmasaṃbhavān
14. Aditi gave birth to the gods, the lords of the three worlds. Diti, however, gave birth to the Daityas, who were born from Kaśyapa himself.
दैत्यानां किल धर्मज्ञ पुरेयं सवनार्णवा ।
सपर्वता मही वीर ते ऽभवन्प्रभविष्णवः ॥१५॥
15. daityānāṃ kila dharmajña pureyaṃ savanārṇavā ,
saparvatā mahī vīra te'bhavanprabhaviṣṇavaḥ.
15. daityānām kila dharmajña purā iyam savanārṇavā
saparvatā mahī vīra te abhavan prabhaviṣṇavaḥ
15. dharmajña vīra purā iyam mahī savanārṇavā
saparvatā kila daityānām te prabhaviṣṇavaḥ abhavan
15. O knower of natural law (dharma), this earth, along with its Vedic ritual grounds and oceans, and with its mountains, formerly belonged to the daityas. O hero, they were indeed powerful.
निहत्य तांस्तु समरे विष्णुना प्रभविष्णुना ।
देवानां वशमानीतं त्रैलोक्यमिदमव्ययम् ॥१६॥
16. nihatya tāṃstu samare viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā ,
devānāṃ vaśamānītaṃ trailokyamidamavyayam.
16. nihatya tān tu samare viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā
devānām vaśam ānītam trailokyam idam avyayam
16. tu viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā samare tān nihatya
idam avyayam trailokyam devānām vaśam ānītam
16. Having killed them in battle, Vishnu, the powerful one, brought this imperishable triple world under the control of the devas.
नैतदेको भवानेव करिष्यति विपर्ययम् ।
सुरैराचरितं पूर्वं कुरुष्वैतद्वचो मम ॥१७॥
17. naitadeko bhavāneva kariṣyati viparyayam ,
surairācaritaṃ pūrvaṃ kuruṣvaitadvaco mama.
17. na etat ekaḥ bhavān eva kariṣyati viparyayam
suraiḥ ācaritam pūrvam kuruṣva etat vacaḥ mama
17. ekaḥ bhavān eva etat viparyayam na kariṣyati
suraiḥ pūrvam ācaritam etat mama vacaḥ kuruṣva
17. You alone will not be able to accomplish this reversal. Rather, carry out this command of mine, which was previously performed by the gods.
एवमुक्तो दशग्रीवः प्रहस्तेन दुरात्मना ।
चिन्तयित्वा मुहूर्तं वै बाढमित्येव सो ऽब्रवीत् ॥१८॥
18. evamukto daśagrīvaḥ prahastena durātmanā ,
cintayitvā muhūrtaṃ vai bāḍhamityeva so'bravīt.
18. evam uktaḥ daśagrīvaḥ prahastena durātmanā
cintayitvā muhūrtam vai bāḍham iti eva saḥ abravīt
18. durātmanā prahastena evam uktaḥ daśagrīvaḥ
muhūrtam cintayitvā vai saḥ bāḍham iti eva abravīt
18. Addressed thus by the evil-minded Prahasta, Daśagrīva, having reflected for a moment, then said, 'So be it!'
स तु तेनैव हर्षेण तस्मिन्नहनि वीर्यवान् ।
वनं गतो दशग्रीवः सह तैः क्षणदाचरैः ॥१९॥
19. sa tu tenaiva harṣeṇa tasminnahani vīryavān ,
vanaṃ gato daśagrīvaḥ saha taiḥ kṣaṇadācaraiḥ.
19. saḥ tu tena eva harṣeṇa tasmin ahani vīryavān
vanam gataḥ daśagrīvaḥ saha taiḥ kṣaṇadācaraiḥ
19. saḥ vīryavān daśagrīvaḥ tu tena eva harṣeṇa
tasmin ahani taiḥ kṣaṇadācaraiḥ saha vanam gataḥ
19. But that mighty Daśagrīva, filled with that very same joy, went to the forest on that day along with those night-roamers.
त्रिकूटस्थः स तु तदा दशग्रीवो निशाचरः ।
प्रेषयामास दौत्येन प्रहस्तं वाक्यकोविदम् ॥२०॥
20. trikūṭasthaḥ sa tu tadā daśagrīvo niśācaraḥ ,
preṣayāmāsa dautyena prahastaṃ vākyakovidam.
20. trikūṭasthaḥ saḥ tu tadā daśagrīvaḥ niśācaraḥ
preṣayāmāsa dautyena prahastam vākyakovidam
20. saḥ niśācaraḥ daśagrīvaḥ tu tadā trikūṭasthaḥ
dautyena vākyakovidam prahastam preṣayāmāsa
20. But that night-roaming Daśagrīva, who was then situated on Trikūṭa mountain, sent Prahasta, skilled in eloquent speech, as an envoy.
प्रहस्त शीघ्रं गत्वा त्वं ब्रूहि नैरृतपुंगवम् ।
वचनान्मम वित्तेशं सामपूर्वमिदं वचः ॥२१॥
21. prahasta śīghraṃ gatvā tvaṃ brūhi nairṛtapuṃgavam ,
vacanānmama vitteśaṃ sāmapūrvamidaṃ vacaḥ.
21. prahasta śīghram gatvā tvam brūhi nairṛtapuṅgavam
vacanāt mama vitteśam sāmapūrvam idam vacaḥ
21. prahasta tvam śīghram gatvā mama vacanāt idam
sāmapūrvam vacaḥ nairṛtapuṅgavam vitteśam brūhi
21. Prahasta, you, go quickly and convey this conciliatory message, from me, to Kubera (vitteśa), the foremost among the rākṣasas.
इयं लङ्का पुरी राजन् राक्षसानां महात्मनाम् ।
त्वया निवेशिता सौम्य नैतद् युक्तं तवानघ ॥२२॥
22. iyaṃ laṅkā purī rājan rākṣasānāṃ mahātmanām ,
tvayā niveśitā saumya naitad yuktaṃ tavānagha.
22. iyam laṅkā purī rājan rākṣasānām mahātmanām
tvayā niveśitā saumya na etat yuktam tava anagha
22. rājan saumya anagha iyam laṅkā purī mahātmanām rākṣasānām (asti).
etat tvayā niveśitā (ca asti).
etat tava na yuktam (asti).
22. O King, O gentle one, O sinless one, this city of Laṅkā belongs to the great-souled (mahātman) rākṣasas. It was established by you. This is not proper for you.
तद्भवान्यदि साम्नैतां दद्यादतुलविक्रम ।
कृता भवेन्मम प्रीतिर्धर्मश्चैवानुपालितः ॥२३॥
23. tadbhavānyadi sāmnaitāṃ dadyādatulavikrama ,
kṛtā bhavenmama prītirdharmaścaivānupālitaḥ.
23. tat bhavān yadi sāmnā etām dadyāt atulavikrama
kṛtā bhavet mama prītiḥ dharmaḥ ca eva anupālitaḥ
23. Therefore, O one of incomparable valor, if you would give this [city/kingdom] by peaceful means, my satisfaction would be achieved, and natural law (dharma) would also be upheld.
इत्युक्तः स तदा गत्वा प्रहस्तो वाक्यकोविदः ।
दशग्रीववचः सर्वं वित्तेशाय न्यवेदयत् ॥२४॥
24. ityuktaḥ sa tadā gatvā prahasto vākyakovidaḥ ,
daśagrīvavacaḥ sarvaṃ vitteśāya nyavedayat.
24. iti uktaḥ sa tadā gatvā prahastaḥ vākyakovidaḥ
daśagrīvavacaḥ sarvam vitteśāya nyavedayat
24. Thus addressed, Prahasta, skilled in speech, then went and reported all of Daśagrīva's words to Kubera, the lord of wealth.
प्रहस्तादपि संश्रुत्य देवो वैश्रवणो वचः ।
प्रत्युवाच प्रहस्तं तं वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदः ॥२५॥
25. prahastādapi saṃśrutya devo vaiśravaṇo vacaḥ ,
pratyuvāca prahastaṃ taṃ vākyaṃ vākyaviśāradaḥ.
25. prahastāt api saṁśrutya devaḥ vaiśravaṇaḥ vacaḥ
pratyuvāca prahastam tam vākyam vākyaviśāradaḥ
25. Having heard Prahasta's words, the divine Vaiśravaṇa, who was also skilled in speech, replied to that Prahasta with these words.
ब्रूहि गच्छ दशग्रीवं पुरी राज्यं च यन्मम ।
तवाप्येतन्महाबाहो भुङ्क्ष्वैतद्धतकण्टकम् ॥२६॥
26. brūhi gaccha daśagrīvaṃ purī rājyaṃ ca yanmama ,
tavāpyetanmahābāho bhuṅkṣvaitaddhatakaṇṭakam.
26. brūhi gaccha daśagrīvam purī rājyam ca yat mama
tava api etat mahābāho bhuṅkṣva etat hatakaṇṭakam
26. Go and tell Daśagrīva, 'The city and kingdom that are mine are now also yours, O mighty-armed one. Enjoy this, which is now free from enemies!'
सर्वं कर्तास्मि भद्रं ते राक्षसेश वचो ऽचिरात् ।
किं तु तावत् प्रतीक्षस्व पितुर्यावन्निवेदये ॥२७॥
27. sarvaṃ kartāsmi bhadraṃ te rākṣaseśa vaco'cirāt ,
kiṃ tu tāvat pratīkṣasva pituryāvannivedaye.
27. sarvam kartā asmi bhadram te rākṣaseśa vacaḥ acirāt
kim tu tāvat pratīkṣasva pituḥ yāvat nivedaye
27. rākṣaseśa te bhadram sarvam acirāt kartā asmi
kim tu yāvat pituḥ nivedaye tāvat pratīkṣasva
27. O lord of rākṣasas, I will accomplish everything for you; may good fortune be with you. Your command will be fulfilled without delay. However, please wait until I inform my father.
एवमुक्त्वा धनाध्यक्षो जगाम पितुरन्तिकम् ।
अभिवाद्य गुरुं प्राह रावणस्य यदीप्सितम् ॥२८॥
28. evamuktvā dhanādhyakṣo jagāma piturantikam ,
abhivādya guruṃ prāha rāvaṇasya yadīpsitam.
28. evam uktvā dhanādhyakṣaḥ jagāma pituḥ antikam
abhivādya gurum prāha rāvaṇasya yat īpsitam
28. evam uktvā dhanādhyakṣaḥ pituḥ antikam jagāma
gurum abhivādya rāvaṇasya yat īpsitam prāha
28. Having spoken thus, the lord of wealth (Kubera) went to his father. After saluting his teacher (guru), he reported what Rāvaṇa desired.
एष तात दशग्रीवो दूतं प्रेषितवान्मम ।
दीयतां नगरी लङ्का पूर्वं रक्षोगणोषिता ।
मयात्र यदनुष्ठेयं तन्ममाचक्ष्व सुव्रत ॥२९॥
29. eṣa tāta daśagrīvo dūtaṃ preṣitavānmama ,
dīyatāṃ nagarī laṅkā pūrvaṃ rakṣogaṇoṣitā ,
mayātra yadanuṣṭheyaṃ tanmamācakṣva suvrata.
29. eṣa tāta daśagrīvaḥ dūtam preṣitavān
mama dīyatām nagarī laṅkā pūrvam
rakṣogaṇoṣitā mayā atra yat
anuṣṭheyam tat mama ācakṣva suvratā
29. tāta eṣaḥ daśagrīvaḥ mama dūtam
preṣitavān pūrvam rakṣogaṇoṣitā
nagarī laṅkā dīyatām suvratā mayā
atra yat anuṣṭheyam tat mama ācakṣva
29. Father, this Daśagrīva has sent an envoy to me (with the message): 'Let the city of Laṅkā, which was formerly inhabited by the hosts of rākṣasas, be given (to me).' O virtuous one, please tell me what I should do in this matter.
ब्रह्मर्षिस्त्वेवमुक्तो ऽसौ विश्रवा मुनिपुंगवः ।
उवाच धनदं वाक्यं शृणु पुत्र वचो मम ॥३०॥
30. brahmarṣistvevamukto'sau viśravā munipuṃgavaḥ ,
uvāca dhanadaṃ vākyaṃ śṛṇu putra vaco mama.
30. brahmarṣiḥ tu evam uktaḥ asau viśravāḥ munipuṅgavaḥ
uvāca dhanadam vākyam śṛṇu putra vacaḥ mama
30. tu evam uktaḥ asau brahmarṣiḥ munipuṅgavaḥ viśravāḥ
dhanadam vākyam uvāca putra mama vacaḥ śṛṇu
30. But that brahmin sage (brahmarṣi), the chief among ascetics (muni-puṅgava), Viśravas, thus addressed, spoke these words to the giver of wealth (Kubera): 'Listen, son, to my advice.'
दशग्रीवो महाबाहुरुक्तवान्मम संनिधौ ।
मया निर्भर्त्सितश्चासीद्बहुधोक्तः सुदुर्मतिः ॥३१॥
31. daśagrīvo mahābāhuruktavānmama saṃnidhau ,
mayā nirbhartsitaścāsīdbahudhoktaḥ sudurmatiḥ.
31. daśagrīvaḥ mahābāhuḥ uktavān mama saṃnidau mayā
nirbhartsitaḥ ca āsīt bahudhā uktaḥ sudurmatiḥ
31. The mighty-armed Daśagrīva spoke in my presence. And he, the very evil-minded one, was rebuked and admonished by me repeatedly.
स क्रोधेन मया चोक्तो ध्वंसस्वेति पुनः पुनः ।
श्रेयोऽभियुक्तं धर्म्यं च शृणु पुत्र वचो मम ॥३२॥
32. sa krodhena mayā cokto dhvaṃsasveti punaḥ punaḥ ,
śreyo'bhiyuktaṃ dharmyaṃ ca śṛṇu putra vaco mama.
32. saḥ krodhena mayā ca uktaḥ dhvaṃsasva iti punaḥ punaḥ
śreyaḥ abhiyuktam dharmyam ca śṛṇu putra vacaḥ mama
32. He was repeatedly told by me with anger, 'Perish!' O son, listen to my words, which are righteous (dharmya) and promote your welfare.
वरप्रदानसंमूढो मान्यामान्यं सुदुर्मतिः ।
न वेत्ति मम शापाच्च प्रकृतिं दारुणां गतः ॥३३॥
33. varapradānasaṃmūḍho mānyāmānyaṃ sudurmatiḥ ,
na vetti mama śāpācca prakṛtiṃ dāruṇāṃ gataḥ.
33. varapradānasaṃmūḍhaḥ mānyāmānyam sudurmatiḥ
na vetti mama śāpāt ca prakṛtim dāruṇām gataḥ
33. Deluded by the boon he received, that very evil-minded one does not discern what is honorable and what is not. And due to my curse, he has adopted a cruel nature (prakṛti).
तस्माद्गच्छ महाबाहो कैलासं धरणीधरम् ।
निवेशय निवासार्थं त्यज लङ्कां सहानुगः ॥३४॥
34. tasmādgaccha mahābāho kailāsaṃ dharaṇīdharam ,
niveśaya nivāsārthaṃ tyaja laṅkāṃ sahānugaḥ.
34. tasmāt gaccha mahābāho kailāsam dharaṇīdharam
niveśaya nivāsārtham tyaja laṅkām sahānugaḥ
34. Therefore, O mighty-armed one, go to Mount Kailāsa, a great mountain. Establish your dwelling there, and abandon Laṅkā along with your followers.
तत्र मन्दाकिनी रम्या नदीनां प्रवरा नदी ।
काञ्चनैः सूर्यसंकाशैः पङ्कजैः संवृतोदका ॥३५॥
35. tatra mandākinī ramyā nadīnāṃ pravarā nadī ,
kāñcanaiḥ sūryasaṃkāśaiḥ paṅkajaiḥ saṃvṛtodakā.

35. There, the charming Mandakini river, the most excellent among rivers, has its waters covered with golden lotuses that resemble the sun.
न हि क्षमं त्वया तेन वैरं धनदरक्षसा ।
जानीषे हि यथानेन लब्धः परमको वरः ॥३६॥
36. na hi kṣamaṃ tvayā tena vairaṃ dhanadarakṣasā ,
jānīṣe hi yathānena labdhaḥ paramako varaḥ.
36. na hi kṣamam tvayā tena vairam dhanada rakṣasā
jānīṣe hi yathā anena labdhaḥ paramakaḥ varaḥ
36. hi tvayā tena dhanada rakṣasā vairam na kṣamam
hi jānīṣe yathā anena paramakaḥ varaḥ labdhaḥ
36. Indeed, it is not proper for you to maintain hostility with that Kubera, the rakṣasa. For you surely know how a supreme boon was obtained by him.
एवमुक्तो गृहीत्वा तु तद्वचः पितृगौरवात् ।
सदार पौरः सामात्यः सवाहनधनो गतः ॥३७॥
37. evamukto gṛhītvā tu tadvacaḥ pitṛgauravāt ,
sadāra pauraḥ sāmātyaḥ savāhanadhano gataḥ.
37. evam uktaḥ gṛhītvā tu tat vacaḥ pitṛgauravāt
sadāraḥ pauraḥ sāmātyaḥ savāhanadhanaḥ gataḥ
37. evam uktaḥ tu pitṛgauravāt tat vacaḥ gṛhītvā
pauraḥ sadāraḥ sāmātyaḥ savāhanadhanaḥ gataḥ
37. Having thus been instructed, and accepting that command out of reverence for his father, the prince (or lord), accompanied by his wife, ministers, vehicles, and wealth, departed.
प्रहस्तस्तु दशग्रीवं गत्वा सर्वं न्यवेदयत् ।
शून्या सा नगरी लङ्का त्रिंशद्योजनमायता ।
प्रविश्य तां सहास्माभिः स्वधर्मं तत्र पालय ॥३८॥
38. prahastastu daśagrīvaṃ gatvā sarvaṃ nyavedayat ,
śūnyā sā nagarī laṅkā triṃśadyojanamāyatā ,
praviśya tāṃ sahāsmābhiḥ svadharmaṃ tatra pālaya.

nyavedayat śūnyā sā nagarī laṅkā
triṃśat yojana āyatā praviśya tām
saha asmābhiḥ svadharmam tatra pālaya
38. tu prahastaḥ daśagrīvam gatvā sarvam

yojana āyatā śūnyā tām asmābhiḥ
saha praviśya tatra svadharmam pālaya
38. But Prahasta went to Daśagrīva and reported everything: "That city of Lanka, which is thirty yojanas long, is deserted. Enter it with us and rule according to your own intrinsic nature (svadharma) there."
एवमुक्तः प्रहस्तेन रावणो राक्षसस्तदा ।
विवेश नगरीं लङ्कां सभ्राता सबलानुगः ॥३९॥
39. evamuktaḥ prahastena rāvaṇo rākṣasastadā ,
viveśa nagarīṃ laṅkāṃ sabhrātā sabalānugaḥ.
39. evam uktaḥ prahastena rāvaṇaḥ rākṣasaḥ tadā
viveśa nagarīm laṅkām sa-bhrātā sa-bala-anugaḥ
39. tadā prahastena evam uktaḥ rākṣasaḥ rāvaṇaḥ
sa-bhrātā sa-bala-anugaḥ laṅkām nagarīm viveśa
39. Thus addressed by Prahasta, Rāvaṇa, the demon, at that time, entered the city of Laṅkā accompanied by his brother and his retinue.
स चाभिषिक्तः क्षणदाचरैस्तदा निवेशयामास पुरीं दशाननः ।
निकामपूर्णा च बभूव सा पुरी निशाचरैर्नीलबलाहकोपमैः ॥४०॥
40. sa cābhiṣiktaḥ kṣaṇadācaraistadā niveśayāmāsa purīṃ daśānanaḥ ,
nikāmapūrṇā ca babhūva sā purī niśācarairnīlabalāhakopamaiḥ.
40. saḥ ca abhiṣiktaḥ kṣaṇadā-caraiḥ
tadā niveśayāmāsa purīm daśānanaḥ
nikāma-pūrṇā ca babhūva sā purī
niśā-caraiḥ nīla-balāhaka-upamaiḥ
40. ca tadā kṣaṇadā-caraiḥ abhiṣiktaḥ saḥ daśānanaḥ purīm niveśayāmāsa.
ca sā purī nīla-balāhaka-upamaiḥ niśā-caraiḥ nikāma-pūrṇā babhūva.
40. And he, Daśānana (Rāvaṇa), having been consecrated by the night-roaming demons at that time, established the city. That city became completely filled with night-stalkers (rākṣasas) resembling dark blue clouds.
धनेश्वरस्त्वथ पितृवाक्यगौरवान्न्यवेशयच्छशिविमले गिरौ पुरीम् ।
स्वलंकृतैर्भवनवरैर्विभूषितां पुरंदरस्येव तदामरावतीम् ॥४१॥
41. dhaneśvarastvatha pitṛvākyagauravānnyaveśayacchaśivimale girau purīm ,
svalaṃkṛtairbhavanavarairvibhūṣitāṃ puraṃdarasyeva tadāmarāvatīm.
41. dhaneśvaraḥ tu atha pitṛ-vākya-gauravāt
nyaveśayat śaśi-vimale girau purīm
su-alaṃkṛtaiḥ bhavana-varaiḥ
vibhūṣitām purandarasya iva tadā amarāvatīm
41. atha tu dhaneśvaraḥ pitṛ-vākya-gauravāt śaśi-vimale girau purīm nyaveśayat.
tadā purandarasya amarāvatīm iva su-alaṃkṛtaiḥ bhavana-varaiḥ vibhūṣitām.
41. Then, out of respect for his father's words, Dhaneśvara (Kubera) established the city on the moon-bright, pure mountain. It was adorned with splendid, well-decorated mansions, like the Amarāvatī of Purandara (Indra) at that time.
