प्रतिप्रयाते भरते वसन् रामस्तपोवने ।
लक्षयामास सोद्वेगमथौत्सुक्यं तपस्विनाम् ॥१॥

1. After Bharata had returned, Rama, who was residing in the penance grove (tapovana), then perceived the agitated eagerness (autsukyam) of the ascetics (tapasvin).
ये तत्र चित्रकूटस्य पुरस्तात्तापसाश्रमे ।
राममाश्रित्य निरतास्तानलक्षयदुत्सुकान् ॥२॥
2. ye tatra citrakūṭasya purastāttāpasāśrame ,
rāmamāśritya niratāstānalakṣayadutsukān.

2. Rāma observed those agitated ascetics residing in the hermitage in front of Citrakūṭa, who were devoted to him.
नयनैर्भृकुटीभिश्च रामं निर्दिश्य शङ्किताः ।
अन्योन्यमुपजल्पन्तः शनैश्चक्रुर्मिथः कथाः ॥३॥
3. nayanairbhṛkuṭībhiśca rāmaṃ nirdiśya śaṅkitāḥ ,
anyonyamupajalpantaḥ śanaiścakrurmithaḥ kathāḥ.

3. Suspicious, they indicated Rāma with their eyes and frowns, whispering to each other and slowly engaging in quiet conversations.
तेषामौत्सुक्यमालक्ष्य रामस्त्वात्मनि शङ्कितः ।
कृताञ्जलिरुवाचेदमृषिं कुलपतिं ततः ॥४॥
4. teṣāmautsukyamālakṣya rāmastvātmani śaṅkitaḥ ,
kṛtāñjaliruvācedamṛṣiṃ kulapatiṃ tataḥ.
4. teṣām autsukyam ālakṣya rāmaḥ tu ātmani śaṅkitaḥ
kṛta-añjaliḥ uvāca idam ṛṣim kulapatim tataḥ

4. Perceiving their agitation, Rāma himself became apprehensive. Then, with joined palms, he spoke this to the sage, the head of the hermitage.
न कच्चिद्भगवन् किं चित् पूर्ववृत्तमिदं मयि ।
दृश्यते विकृतं येन विक्रियन्ते तपस्विनः ॥५॥
5. na kaccidbhagavan kiṃ cit pūrvavṛttamidaṃ mayi ,
dṛśyate vikṛtaṃ yena vikriyante tapasvinaḥ.
5. na kaccit bhagavan kim cit pūrva-vṛttam idam
mayi dṛśyate vikṛtam yena vikriyante tapasvinaḥ
5. bhagavan na kaccit idam kim cit pūrva-vṛttam

5. “O revered one, I hope that nothing improper concerning me has occurred previously, due to which these ascetics appear disturbed.”
प्रमादाच्चरितं कच्चित् किं चिन्नावरजस्य मे ।
लक्ष्मणस्यर्षिभिर्दृष्टं नानुरूपमिवात्मनः ॥६॥
6. pramādāccaritaṃ kaccit kiṃ cinnāvarajasya me ,
lakṣmaṇasyarṣibhirdṛṣṭaṃ nānurūpamivātmanaḥ.
6. pramādāt caritaṃ kaccit kiṃ cit na avarajasya me
lakṣmaṇasya ṛṣibhiḥ dṛṣṭaṃ na anurūpam iva ātmanaḥ
6. kaccit ṛṣibhiḥ me avarajasya lakṣmaṇasya pramādāt
kiṃ cit caritaṃ ātmanaḥ anurūpam iva na dṛṣṭam
6. I hope that the sages have not observed any inadvertent conduct on the part of my younger brother Lakshmana that would be considered unbecoming of his own nature (ātman).
कच्चिच्छुश्रूषमाणा वः शुश्रूषणपरा मयि ।
प्रमदाभ्युचितां वृत्तिं सीता युक्तं न वर्तते ॥७॥
7. kaccicchuśrūṣamāṇā vaḥ śuśrūṣaṇaparā mayi ,
pramadābhyucitāṃ vṛttiṃ sītā yuktaṃ na vartate.

7. I hope that Sita, who serves you (sages) and is devoted to me, does not conduct herself improperly with regard to the behavior expected of a lady.
अथर्षिर्जरया वृद्धस्तपसा च जरां गतः ।
वेपमान इवोवाच रामं भूतदयापरम् ॥८॥
8. atharṣirjarayā vṛddhastapasā ca jarāṃ gataḥ ,
vepamāna ivovāca rāmaṃ bhūtadayāparam.
8. atha ṛṣiḥ jarayā vṛddhaḥ tapasā ca jarām
gataḥ vepamānaḥ iva uvāca rāmam bhūtadayāparam
8. atha jarayā vṛddhaḥ tapasā ca jarām gataḥ
vepamānaḥ iva ṛṣiḥ bhūtadayāparam rāmam uvāca
8. Then the sage, old with age and further aged by asceticism (tapas), spoke to Rama, who was greatly compassionate towards all beings, as if trembling.
कुतः कल्याणसत्त्वायाः कल्याणाभिरतेस्तथा ।
चलनं तात वैदेह्यास्तपस्विषु विशेषतः ॥९॥
9. kutaḥ kalyāṇasattvāyāḥ kalyāṇābhiratestathā ,
calanaṃ tāta vaidehyāstapasviṣu viśeṣataḥ.
9. kutaḥ kalyāṇasattvāyāḥ kalyāṇābhirateḥ tathā
calanaṃ tāta vaidehyāḥ tapasviṣu viśeṣataḥ
9. tāta kutaḥ kalyāṇasattvāyāḥ tathā kalyāṇābhirateḥ

9. Dear son, how could there be any deviation from the noble character (kalyāṇasattvā) of Vaidehī (Sita), who is devoted to righteousness (kalyāṇābhirati), especially when she is among ascetics (tapasvins)?
त्वन्निमित्तमिदं तावत्तापसान्प्रति वर्तते ।
रक्षोभ्यस्तेन संविग्नाः कथयन्ति मिथः कथाः ॥१०॥
10. tvannimittamidaṃ tāvattāpasānprati vartate ,
rakṣobhyastena saṃvignāḥ kathayanti mithaḥ kathāḥ.
10. tvannimittam idam tāvat tāpasān prati vartate
rakṣobhyaḥ tena saṃvignāḥ kathayanti mithaḥ kathāḥ
10. idam tāvat tvannimittam tāpasān prati vartate tena
rakṣobhyaḥ saṃvignāḥ mithaḥ kathāḥ kathayanti
10. Indeed, this situation is happening to the ascetics because of you. Therefore, distressed by the demons, they are discussing it among themselves.
रावणावरजः कश्चित् खरो नामेह राक्षसः ।
उत्पाट्य तापसान् सर्वाञ्जनस्थाननिकेतनान् ॥११॥
11. rāvaṇāvarajaḥ kaścit kharo nāmeha rākṣasaḥ ,
utpāṭya tāpasān sarvāñjanasthānaniketanān.
11. rāvaṇāvarajaḥ kaścid kharaḥ nāma iha rākṣasaḥ
utpāṭya tāpasān sarvān janasthānaniketanān
11. iha rāvaṇāvarajaḥ kaścid kharaḥ nāma rākṣasaḥ
janasthānaniketanān sarvān tāpasān utpāṭya
11. Here, there is a certain demon named Khara, the younger brother of Rāvaṇa, who has dislodged all the ascetics residing in Janasthana.
धृष्टश्च जितकाशी च नृशंसः पुरुषादकः ।
अवलिप्तश्च पापश्च त्वां च तात न मृष्यते ॥१२॥
12. dhṛṣṭaśca jitakāśī ca nṛśaṃsaḥ puruṣādakaḥ ,
avaliptaśca pāpaśca tvāṃ ca tāta na mṛṣyate.
12. dhṛṣṭaḥ ca jitakāśī ca nṛśaṃsaḥ puruṣādakaḥ
avaliptaḥ ca pāpaḥ ca tvām ca tāta na mṛṣyate
12. tāta saḥ dhṛṣṭaḥ ca jitakāśī ca nṛśaṃsaḥ puruṣādakaḥ
avaliptaḥ ca pāpaḥ ca (asti) ca tvām na mṛṣyate
12. He is arrogant, boastful of victory, cruel, and a cannibal. He is also conceited and wicked, and, dear one (tāta), he does not tolerate you.
त्वं यदा प्रभृति ह्यस्मिन्नाश्रमे तात वर्तसे ।
तदा प्रभृति रक्षांसि विप्रकुर्वन्ति तापसान् ॥१३॥
13. tvaṃ yadā prabhṛti hyasminnāśrame tāta vartase ,
tadā prabhṛti rakṣāṃsi viprakurvanti tāpasān.
13. tvam yadā prabhṛti hi asmin āśrame tāta vartase
tadā prabhṛti rakṣāṃsi viprakurvanti tāpasān
13. tāta hi yadā prabhṛti tvam asmin āśrame vartase
tadā prabhṛti rakṣāṃsi tāpasān viprakurvanti
13. Indeed, dear one (tāta), ever since you have been dwelling in this hermitage (āśrama), from that time onwards, the demons have been harassing the ascetics.
दर्शयन्ति हि बीभत्सैः क्रूरैर्भीषणकैरपि ।
नाना रूपैर्विरूपैश्च रूपैरसुखदर्शनैः ॥१४॥
14. darśayanti hi bībhatsaiḥ krūrairbhīṣaṇakairapi ,
nānā rūpairvirūpaiśca rūpairasukhadarśanaiḥ.
14. darśayanti hi bībhatsaiḥ krūraiḥ bhīṣaṇakaiḥ api
nānā rūpaiḥ virūpaiḥ ca rūpaiḥ asukhakadarśanaiḥ
14. hi te nānā bībhatsaiḥ krūraiḥ bhīṣaṇakaiḥ api virūpaiḥ
ca asukhakadarśanaiḥ rūpaiḥ rūpaiḥ darśayanti
14. Indeed, they reveal themselves with repulsive, cruel, and even terrifying forms, as well as with various ugly, deformed shapes that are unpleasant to behold.
अप्रशस्तैरशुचिभिः संप्रयोज्य च तापसान् ।
प्रतिघ्नन्त्यपरान् क्षिप्रमनार्याः पुरतः स्थितः ॥१५॥
15. apraśastairaśucibhiḥ saṃprayojya ca tāpasān ,
pratighnantyaparān kṣipramanāryāḥ purataḥ sthitaḥ.
15. apraśastaiḥ aśucibhiḥ saṃprayojya ca tāpasān
pratighnanti aparān kṣipram anāryāḥ purataḥ sthitāḥ
15. ca purataḥ sthitāḥ anāryāḥ apraśastaiḥ aśucibhiḥ
tāpasān saṃprayojya aparān kṣipram pratighnanti
15. And these ignoble ones (anārya), standing in front, quickly obstruct others by employing the disgraceful and impure.
तेषु तेष्वाश्रमस्थानेष्वबुद्धमवलीय च ।
रमन्ते तापसांस्तत्र नाशयन्तो ऽल्पचेतसः ॥१६॥
16. teṣu teṣvāśramasthāneṣvabuddhamavalīya ca ,
ramante tāpasāṃstatra nāśayanto'lpacetasaḥ.
16. teṣu teṣu āśramasthāneṣu abuddham avalīya ca
ramante tāpasān tatra nāśayantaḥ alpacetasaḥ
16. ca teṣu teṣu āśramasthāneṣu abuddham avalīya
alpacetasaḥ tatra ramante tāpasān nāśayantaḥ
16. And, hiding themselves unnoticed in those various hermitage (āśrama) locations, these feeble-minded individuals revel there, destroying the ascetics.
अपक्षिपन्ति स्रुग्भाण्डानग्नीन् सिञ्चन्ति वारिणा ।
कलशांश्च प्रमृद्नन्ति हवने समुपस्थिते ॥१७॥
17. apakṣipanti srugbhāṇḍānagnīn siñcanti vāriṇā ,
kalaśāṃśca pramṛdnanti havane samupasthite.
17. apakṣipanti srugbhāṇḍān agnīn siñcanti vāriṇā
kalaśān ca pramṛdnanti havane samupasthite
17. (te) srugbhāṇḍān apakṣipanti,
agnīn vāriṇā siñcanti,
ca havane samupasthite kalaśān pramṛdnanti
17. They cast aside the sacrificial ladles and vessels, douse the fires with water, and shatter the pots when the Vedic fire ritual (homa) is about to commence.
तैर्दुरात्मभिराविष्टानाश्रमान्प्रजिहासवः ।
गमनायान्यदेशस्य चोदयन्त्य् ऋषयो ऽद्य माम् ॥१८॥
18. tairdurātmabhirāviṣṭānāśramānprajihāsavaḥ ,
gamanāyānyadeśasya codayanty ṛṣayo'dya mām.
18. taiḥ durātmabhiḥ āviṣṭān āśramān prajihāsavaḥ
gamanāya anya deśasya codayanti ṛṣayaḥ adya mām
18. adya taiḥ durātmabhiḥ āviṣṭān āśramān prajihāsavaḥ
ṛṣayaḥ anya deśasya gamanāya mām codayanti
18. Today, the sages, desiring to leave their hermitages which have been occupied by those evil-minded beings, are urging me to go to another land.
तत् पुरा राम शारीरामुपहिंसां तपस्विषु ।
दर्शयति हि दुष्टास्ते त्यक्ष्याम इममाश्रमम् ॥१९॥
19. tat purā rāma śārīrāmupahiṃsāṃ tapasviṣu ,
darśayati hi duṣṭāste tyakṣyāma imamāśramam.
19. tat purā rāma śārīrām upahiṃsām tapasviṣu
darśayati hi duṣṭāḥ te tyakṣyāma imam āśramam
19. rāma tat hi te duṣṭāḥ purā tapasviṣu śārīrām
upahiṃsām darśayati (iti) imam āśramam tyakṣyāma
19. Therefore, O Rama, since those wicked beings have previously inflicted bodily harm upon the ascetics, we will abandon this hermitage.
बहुमूलफलं चित्रमविदूरादितो वनम् ।
पुराणाश्रममेवाहं श्रयिष्ये सगणः पुनः ॥२०॥
20. bahumūlaphalaṃ citramavidūrādito vanam ,
purāṇāśramamevāhaṃ śrayiṣye sagaṇaḥ punaḥ.
20. bahumūlaphalam citram avidūrāt itaḥ vanam
purāṇa āśramam eva aham śrayiṣye sagaṇaḥ punaḥ
20. itaḥ avidūrāt bahumūlaphalam citram vanam (asti).
punaḥ aham sagaṇaḥ purāṇam āśramam eva śrayiṣye.
20. Not far from here is a beautiful forest, abundant in various roots and fruits. I, along with my retinue, will again seek refuge in that very old hermitage.
खरस्त्वय्यपि चायुक्तं पुरा तात प्रवर्तते ।
सहास्माभिरितो गच्छ यदि बुद्धिः प्रवर्तते ॥२१॥
21. kharastvayyapi cāyuktaṃ purā tāta pravartate ,
sahāsmābhirito gaccha yadi buddhiḥ pravartate.
21. kharaḥ tu tvayi api ca ayuktam purā tāta pravartate
saha asmābhiḥ itaḥ gaccha yadi buddhiḥ pravartate
21. tāta,
kharaḥ tu purā tvayi api ca ayuktam pravartate.
asmābhiḥ saha itaḥ gaccha,
yadi buddhiḥ pravartate.
21. But, my dear, Khara previously behaved improperly even towards you. Come with us from here, if your mind is so inclined.
सकलत्रस्य संदेहो नित्यं यत्तस्य राघव ।
समर्थस्यापि हि सतो वासो दुःख इहाद्य ते ॥२२॥
22. sakalatrasya saṃdeho nityaṃ yattasya rāghava ,
samarthasyāpi hi sato vāso duḥkha ihādya te.
22. sakalattrasya sandehaḥ nityam yat tasya rāghava
samarthasya api hi sataḥ vāsaḥ duḥkhaḥ iha adya te
22. rāghava sakalattrasya nityam sandehaḥ yat tasya,
samarthasya api hi sataḥ te vāsaḥ adya iha duḥkhaḥ
22. O Rāghava, because of the constant uncertainty for one who is accompanied by his wife, dwelling here today is indeed sorrowful for you, even though you are capable.
इत्युक्तवन्तं रामस्तं राजपुत्रस्तपस्विनम् ।
न शशाकोत्तरैर्वाक्यैरवरोद्धुं समुत्सुकम् ॥२३॥
23. ityuktavantaṃ rāmastaṃ rājaputrastapasvinam ,
na śaśākottarairvākyairavaroddhuṃ samutsukam.
23. iti uktavantam rāmaḥ tam rājaputraḥ tapasvinam
na śaśāka uttaraiḥ vākyaiḥ avaroddhum samutsukam
23. rāmaḥ rājaputraḥ tam tapasvinam iti uktavantam
samutsukam uttaraiḥ vākyaiḥ avaroddhum na śaśāka
23. Rāma, the prince, was unable to hold back that ascetic, who had spoken thus and was very eager (to leave), with any countering words.
अभिनन्द्य समापृच्छ्य समाधाय च राघवम् ।
स जगामाश्रमं त्यक्त्वा कुलैः कुलपतिः सह ॥२४॥
24. abhinandya samāpṛcchya samādhāya ca rāghavam ,
sa jagāmāśramaṃ tyaktvā kulaiḥ kulapatiḥ saha.
24. abhinandya samāpṛcchya samādhāya ca rāghavam sa
jagāma āśramam tyaktvā kulaiḥ kulapatiḥ saha
24. saḥ kulapatiḥ rāghavam abhinandya samāpṛcchya ca samādhāya,
kulaiḥ saha āśramam tyaktvā jagāma
24. Having welcomed, bid farewell to, and comforted Rāghava, the head of the hermitage (kulapati) departed, abandoning his hermitage along with his families/disciples.
रामः संसाध्य त्व् ऋषिगणमनुगमनाद्देशात्तस्माच्चित् कुलपतिमभिवाद्यर्षिम् ।
सम्यक्प्रीतैस्तैरनुमत उपदिष्टार्थः पुण्यं वासाय स्वनिलयमुपसंपेदे ॥२५॥
25. rāmaḥ saṃsādhya tv ṛṣigaṇamanugamanāddeśāttasmāccit kulapatimabhivādyarṣim ,
samyakprītaistairanumata upadiṣṭārthaḥ puṇyaṃ vāsāya svanilayamupasaṃpede.
25. rāmaḥ tu saṃsādhya ṛṣigaṇam anugamanāt
deśāt tasmāt cit kulapatim abhivādya ṛṣim
samyakprītaiḥ taiḥ anumataḥ upadiṣṭārthaḥ
puṇyam vāsāya svanilayam upasaṃpede
25. rāmaḥ tu ṛṣigaṇam anugamanāt deśāt tasmāt cit saṃsādhya,
kulapatim ṛṣim abhivādya,
taiḥ samyakprītaiḥ anumataḥ upadiṣṭārthaḥ,
vāsāya puṇyam svanilayam upasaṃpede
25. Rāma, indeed, having respectfully dismissed the assembly of sages from that very place where they had accompanied him, and having saluted the sage Kulapati, then, being approved by those well-pleased sages and having received their instructions, he attained his own auspicious dwelling for his stay.
आश्रमं त्व् ऋषिविरहितं प्रभुः क्षणमपि न जहौ स राघवः ।
राघवं हि सततमनुगतास्तापसाश्चर्षिचरितधृतगुणाः ॥२६॥
26. āśramaṃ tv ṛṣivirahitaṃ prabhuḥ kṣaṇamapi na jahau sa rāghavaḥ ,
rāghavaṃ hi satatamanugatāstāpasāścarṣicaritadhṛtaguṇāḥ.
26. āśramam tu ṛṣivirahitam prabhuḥ
kṣaṇam api na jahau saḥ rāghavaḥ
rāghavam hi satatam anugatāḥ
tāpasāḥ ca ṛṣicaritadhṛtaguṇāḥ
26. saḥ prabhuḥ rāghavaḥ ṛṣivirahitam
āśramam kṣaṇam api na jahau
hi ṛṣicaritadhṛtaguṇāḥ tāpasāḥ
ca satatam rāghavam anugatāḥ
26. Lord Rama did not abandon that hermitage, even for a moment, though it was devoid of sages. For those ascetics, who upheld the virtues of the sages' conduct, constantly followed Rama.
