तथा तासां वदन्तीनां परुषं दारुणं बहु ।
राक्षसीनामसौम्यानां रुरोद जनकात्मजा ॥१॥

1. While those unfriendly demonesses (rākṣasī) were speaking many harsh and cruel words, Janaka's daughter (Sītā) wept.
एवमुक्ता तु वैदेही राक्षसीभिर्मनस्विनी ।
उवाच परमत्रस्ता बाष्पगद्गदया गिरा ॥२॥
2. evamuktā tu vaidehī rākṣasībhirmanasvinī ,
uvāca paramatrastā bāṣpagadgadayā girā.

2. Thus addressed by the female demons, the high-minded Vaidehi, extremely terrified, spoke with a voice choked with tears.
न मानुषी राक्षसस्य भार्या भवितुमर्हति ।
कामं खादत मां सर्वा न करिष्यामि वो वचः ॥३॥
3. na mānuṣī rākṣasasya bhāryā bhavitumarhati ,
kāmaṃ khādata māṃ sarvā na kariṣyāmi vo vacaḥ.
3. na mānuṣī rākṣasasya bhāryā bhavitum arhati
kāmam khādata mām sarvā na kariṣyāmi vaḥ vacaḥ
3. mānuṣī rākṣasasya bhāryā bhavitum na arhati

3. A human woman is not fit to be the wife of a demon. You may all devour me if you wish; I will not obey your command.
सा राक्षसी मध्यगता सीता सुरसुतोपमा ।
न शर्म लेभे दुःखार्ता रावणेन च तर्जिता ॥४॥
4. sā rākṣasī madhyagatā sītā surasutopamā ,
na śarma lebhe duḥkhārtā rāvaṇena ca tarjitā.

śarma lebhe duḥkhārtā rāvaṇena ca tarjitā

4. That Sita, who resembled a daughter of the gods, found no peace while surrounded by the female demons, afflicted by sorrow, and threatened by Ravana.
वेपते स्माधिकं सीता विशन्तीवाङ्गमात्मनः ।
वने यूथपरिभ्रष्टा मृगी कोकैरिवार्दिता ॥५॥
5. vepate smādhikaṃ sītā viśantīvāṅgamātmanaḥ ,
vane yūthaparibhraṣṭā mṛgī kokairivārditā.
5. vepate sma adhikam sītā viśantī iva aṅgam ātmanaḥ
vane yūthaparibhraṣṭā mṛgī kokaiḥ iva ārditā
5. sītā adhikam vepate sma ātmanaḥ aṅgam viśantī

5. Sita trembled excessively, as though withdrawing into her own body, much like a doe separated from its herd in the forest, tormented by predators (koka).
सा त्वशोकस्य विपुलां शाखामालम्ब्य पुष्पिताम् ।
चिन्तयामास शोकेन भर्तारं भग्नमानसा ॥६॥
6. sā tvaśokasya vipulāṃ śākhāmālambya puṣpitām ,
cintayāmāsa śokena bhartāraṃ bhagnamānasā.
6. sā tu aśokasya vipulām śākhām ālambya puṣpitām
cintayāmāsa śokena bhartāram bhagnamānasā
6. sā tu aśokasya vipulām puṣpitām śākhām ālambya
bhagnamānasā śokena bhartāram cintayāmāsa
6. And she, broken-hearted, leaning on a large, blossoming branch of the aśoka tree, contemplated her husband with great sorrow.
सा स्नापयन्ती विपुलौ स्तनौ नेत्रजलस्रवैः ।
चिन्तयन्ती न शोकस्य तदान्तमधिगच्छति ॥७॥
7. sā snāpayantī vipulau stanau netrajalasravaiḥ ,
cintayantī na śokasya tadāntamadhigacchati.
7. sā snāpayantī vipulau stanau netrajalasravaiḥ
cintayantī na śokasya tadā antam adhigacchati
7. sā netrajalasravaiḥ vipulau stanau snāpayantī
cintayantī tadā śokasya antam na adhigacchati
7. Drenching her ample breasts with streams of tears from her eyes, and deep in thought, she could not find an end to her sorrow then.
सा वेपमाना पतिता प्रवाते कदली यथा ।
राक्षसीनां भयत्रस्ता विवर्णवदनाभवत् ॥८॥
8. sā vepamānā patitā pravāte kadalī yathā ,
rākṣasīnāṃ bhayatrastā vivarṇavadanābhavat.
8. sā vepamānā patitā pravāte kadalī yathā
rākṣasīnām bhayatrastā vivarṇavadanā abhavat
8. sā प्रवाते कदली यथा वेपमाना पतिता
भयत्रस्ता राक्षसीनाम् विवर्णवदना abhavat
8. Trembling and fallen like a plantain tree in a strong wind, she became pale-faced and terrified by the female demons (rākṣasīs).
तस्या सा दीर्घविपुला वेपन्त्याः सीतया तदा ।
ददृशे कम्पिनी वेणी व्यालीव परिसर्पती ॥९॥
9. tasyā sā dīrghavipulā vepantyāḥ sītayā tadā ,
dadṛśe kampinī veṇī vyālīva parisarpatī.
9. tasyāḥ sā dīrghavipulā vepantyāḥ sītayā tadā
dadṛśe kampinī veṇī vyālī iva parisarpatī
9. tadā tasyāḥ vepantyāḥ sītayā sā dīrghavipulā
kampinī veṇī vyālī iva parisarpatī dadṛśe
9. Then, by that trembling Sītā, her long, ample, quivering braid of hair was seen, coiling like a female snake (vyālī).
सा निःश्वसन्ती दुःखार्ता शोकोपहतचेतना ।
आर्ता व्यसृजदश्रूणि मैथिली विललाप ह ॥१०॥
10. sā niḥśvasantī duḥkhārtā śokopahatacetanā ,
ārtā vyasṛjadaśrūṇi maithilī vilalāpa ha.
10. sā niḥśvasantī duḥkhārtā śokopahatacetanā
ārtā vyasṛjat aśrūṇi maithilī vilalāpa ha
10. She, deeply afflicted by sorrow, her consciousness overwhelmed by grief, sighed and shed tears. Indeed, Maithili (Sita) lamented.
हा रामेति च दुःखार्ता पुनर्हा लक्ष्मणेति च ।
हा श्वश्रु मम कौसल्ये हा सुमित्रेति भाविनि ॥११॥
11. hā rāmeti ca duḥkhārtā punarhā lakṣmaṇeti ca ,
hā śvaśru mama kausalye hā sumitreti bhāvini.
11. hā rāma iti ca duḥkhārtā punaḥ hā lakṣmaṇa iti ca
hā śvaśru mama kausalye hā sumitre iti bhāvini
11. Afflicted by sorrow, the noble lady cried out, "Alas, Rama!" and again, "Alas, Lakshmana!" (She continued), "Alas, my mother-in-law Kausalya! Alas, Sumitra!"
लोकप्रवादः सत्यो ऽयं पण्डितैः समुदाहृतः ।
अकाले दुर्लभो मृत्युः स्त्रिया वा पुरुषस्य वा ॥१२॥
12. lokapravādaḥ satyo'yaṃ paṇḍitaiḥ samudāhṛtaḥ ,
akāle durlabho mṛtyuḥ striyā vā puruṣasya vā.
12. lokapravādaḥ satyaḥ ayam paṇḍitaiḥ samudāhṛtaḥ ।
akāle durlabhaḥ mṛtyuḥ striyāḥ vā puruṣasya vā
12. This popular saying, declared by the wise, is true: "Death is difficult to obtain out of its proper time, whether for a woman or a man."
यत्राहमाभिः क्रूराभी राक्षसीभिरिहार्दिता ।
जीवामि हीना रामेण मुहूर्तमपि दुःखिता ॥१३॥
13. yatrāhamābhiḥ krūrābhī rākṣasībhirihārditā ,
jīvāmi hīnā rāmeṇa muhūrtamapi duḥkhitā.
13. yatra aham ābhiḥ krūrābhiḥ rākṣasībhiḥ iha ārditā ।
jīvāmi hīnā rāmeṇa muhūrtam api duḥkhitā
13. Where I, tormented here by these cruel ogresses, separated from Rama, live even for a moment, distressed.
एषाल्पपुण्या कृपणा विनशिष्याम्यनाथवत् ।
समुद्रमध्ये नौ पूर्णा वायुवेगैरिवाहता ॥१४॥
14. eṣālpapuṇyā kṛpaṇā vinaśiṣyāmyanāthavat ,
samudramadhye nau pūrṇā vāyuvegairivāhatā.
14. eṣā alpapuṇyā kṛpaṇā vinaśiṣyāmi anāthavat
samudramadhye nau pūrṇā vāyuvegaiḥ iva āhatā
14. eṣā alpapuṇyā kṛpaṇā anāthavat vinaśiṣyāmi
samudramadhye nau pūrṇā vāyuvegaiḥ iva āhatā
14. I, wretched and of little merit, will perish like one without a protector, just as a boat, full (of water), struck by the force of winds, is destroyed in the middle of the ocean.
भर्तारं तमपश्यन्ती राक्षसीवशमागता ।
सीदामि खलु शोकेन कूलं तोयहतं यथा ॥१५॥
15. bhartāraṃ tamapaśyantī rākṣasīvaśamāgatā ,
sīdāmi khalu śokena kūlaṃ toyahataṃ yathā.
15. bhartāram tam apaśyantī rākṣasīvaśam āgatā
sīdāmi khalu śokena kūlam toyahatam yathā
15. tam bhartāram apaśyantī rākṣasīvaśam āgatā
śokena khalu sīdāmi yathā toyahatam kūlam
15. Not seeing that husband of mine and having fallen under the sway of the rākṣasīs, I am indeed sinking in sorrow, just like a riverbank eroded by water.
तं पद्मदलपत्राक्षं सिंहविक्रान्तगामिनम् ।
धन्याः पश्यन्ति मे नाथं कृतज्ञं प्रियवादिनम् ॥१६॥
16. taṃ padmadalapatrākṣaṃ siṃhavikrāntagāminam ,
dhanyāḥ paśyanti me nāthaṃ kṛtajñaṃ priyavādinam.
16. tam padmadalapatrākṣam siṃhavikrāntagāminam
dhanyāḥ paśyanti me nātham kṛtajñam priyavādinam
16. dhanyāḥ me nātham tam padmadalapatrākṣam
siṃhavikrāntagāminam kṛtajñam priyavādinam paśyanti
16. Fortunate are those who behold my lord (nātha) – him with eyes like lotus petals, whose gait is like the majestic stride of a lion, who is grateful, and who speaks kindly.
सर्वथा तेन हीनाया रामेण विदितात्मना ।
तीष्क्णं विषमिवास्वाद्य दुर्लभं मम जीवितम् ॥१७॥
17. sarvathā tena hīnāyā rāmeṇa viditātmanā ,
tīṣkṇaṃ viṣamivāsvādya durlabhaṃ mama jīvitam.
17. sarvathā tena hīnāyā rāmeṇa viditātmanā tīkṣṇam
viṣam iva āsvādya durlabham mama jīvitam
17. sarvathā tena rāmeṇa viditātmanā hīnāyā mama
jīvitam tīkṣṇam viṣam iva āsvādya durlabham
17. For me, entirely separated from him, Rama, whose (ātman) is known, my life is difficult to maintain, as if I have consumed potent poison.
कीदृशं तु मया पापं पुरा देहान्तरे कृतम् ।
येनेदं प्राप्यते दुःखं मया घोरं सुदारुणम् ॥१८॥
18. kīdṛśaṃ tu mayā pāpaṃ purā dehāntare kṛtam ,
yenedaṃ prāpyate duḥkhaṃ mayā ghoraṃ sudāruṇam.
18. kīdṛśam tu mayā pāpam purā dehāntare kṛtam yena
idam prāpyate duḥkham mayā ghoram sudāruṇam
18. mayā purā dehāntare kīdṛśam pāpam kṛtam yena
mayā idam ghoram sudāruṇam duḥkham prāpyate
18. What kind of sin (karma) did I truly commit in a past life (dehāntara), by which I am now experiencing this dreadful and extremely severe suffering?
जीवितं त्यक्तुमिच्छामि शोकेन महता वृता ।
राक्षसीभिश्च रक्षन्त्या रामो नासाद्यते मया ॥१९॥
19. jīvitaṃ tyaktumicchāmi śokena mahatā vṛtā ,
rākṣasībhiśca rakṣantyā rāmo nāsādyate mayā.
19. jīvitam tyaktum icchāmi śokena mahatā vṛtā
rākṣasībhiḥ ca rakṣantyā rāmaḥ na āsādyate mayā
19. mahatā śokena vṛtā jīvitam tyaktum icchāmi ca
rākṣasībhiḥ rakṣantyā mayā rāmaḥ na āsādyate
19. I desire to abandon life, overwhelmed by profound sorrow. And because I am guarded by demonesses and a female guard, Rama cannot be approached by me.
धिगस्तु खलु मानुष्यं धिगस्तु परवश्यताम् ।
न शक्यं यत् परित्यक्तुमात्मच्छन्देन जीवितम् ॥२०॥
20. dhigastu khalu mānuṣyaṃ dhigastu paravaśyatām ,
na śakyaṃ yat parityaktumātmacchandena jīvitam.
20. dhik astu khalu mānuṣyam dhik astu paravaśyatām
na śakyam yat parityaktum ātmacchandena jīvitam
20. khalu mānuṣyam dhik astu paravaśyatām dhik astu
yat jīvitam ātmacchandena parityaktum na śakyam
20. Fie upon this human condition indeed! Fie upon this dependence on others! For it is not possible to abandon life by one's own will (ātmacchanda).
