अथ रात्र्यां व्यतीतायामवसुप्तमनन्तरम् ।
प्रबोधयामास शनैर्लक्ष्मणं रघुनन्दनः ॥१॥

1. Then, as the night passed, Rama, the joy of the Raghu dynasty (raghunandanaḥ), gently awoke Lakshmana, who had been sleeping beside him.
सौमित्रे शृणु वन्यानां वल्गु व्याहरतां स्वनम् ।
संप्रतिष्ठामहे कालः प्रस्थानस्य परंतप ॥२॥
2. saumitre śṛṇu vanyānāṃ valgu vyāharatāṃ svanam ,

2. O Saumitra, listen to the sweet sounds of the forest creatures calling out. O scorcher of foes (parantapa), it is time for our departure; we must set forth.
स सुप्तः समये भ्रात्रा लक्ष्मणः प्रतिबोधितः ।
जहौ निद्रां च तन्द्रीं च प्रसक्तं च पथि श्रमम् ॥३॥
3. sa suptaḥ samaye bhrātrā lakṣmaṇaḥ pratibodhitaḥ ,
jahau nidrāṃ ca tandrīṃ ca prasaktaṃ ca pathi śramam.

3. Lakshmana, who had been sleeping, was awakened in due time by his brother. He then cast off his sleep and drowsiness, as well as the persistent fatigue from the journey.
तत उत्थाय ते सर्वे स्पृष्ट्वा नद्याः शिवं जलम् ।
पन्थानमृषिणोद्दिष्टं चित्रकूटस्य तं ययुः ॥४॥
4. tata utthāya te sarve spṛṣṭvā nadyāḥ śivaṃ jalam ,
panthānamṛṣiṇoddiṣṭaṃ citrakūṭasya taṃ yayuḥ.

4. Then, having risen, all of them touched the sacred water of the river and proceeded on that path to Citrakūṭa which had been pointed out by the sage.
ततः संप्रस्थितः काले रामः सौमित्रिणा सह ।
सीतां कमलपत्राक्षीमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥५॥
5. tataḥ saṃprasthitaḥ kāle rāmaḥ saumitriṇā saha ,
sītāṃ kamalapatrākṣīmidaṃ vacanamabravīt.

5. Then, at the appropriate moment, Rama, having set out with Lakshmana, spoke these words to Sita, whose eyes resembled lotus petals.
आदीप्तानिव वैदेहि सर्वतः पुष्पितान्नगान् ।
स्वैः पुष्पैः किंशुकान्पश्य मालिनः शिशिरात्यये ॥६॥
6. ādīptāniva vaidehi sarvataḥ puṣpitānnagān ,
svaiḥ puṣpaiḥ kiṃśukānpaśya mālinaḥ śiśirātyaye.
6. ādīptān iva vaidehi sarvataḥ puṣpitān nagān
svaiḥ puṣpaiḥ kiṃśukān paśya mālinaḥ śiśirātyaye

6. O Vaidehī, observe the Kimśuka trees, which are in full bloom everywhere with their own flowers, appearing as if ablaze and garlanded at the end of winter.
पश्य भल्लातकान्फुल्लान्नरैरनुपसेवितान् ।
फलपत्रैरवनतान्नूनं शक्ष्यामि जीवितुम् ॥७॥
7. paśya bhallātakānphullānnarairanupasevitān ,
phalapatrairavanatānnūnaṃ śakṣyāmi jīvitum.

phalapatraiḥ avanatān nūnam śakṣyāmi jīvitum

7. Behold the Bhallātaka trees, in full bloom and unfrequented by men, laden with their fruits and leaves. Surely, I will be able to live (jīvitum) [here].
पश्य द्रोणप्रमाणानि लम्बमानानि लक्ष्मण ।
मधूनि मधुकारीभिः संभृतानि नगे नगे ॥८॥
8. paśya droṇapramāṇāni lambamānāni lakṣmaṇa ,
madhūni madhukārībhiḥ saṃbhṛtāni nage nage.

8. Lakṣmaṇa, behold these honeys, each measuring a droṇa, hanging from every tree, collected by honey-bees.
एष क्रोशति नत्यूहस्तं शिखी प्रतिकूजति ।
रमणीये वनोद्देशे पुष्पसंस्तरसंकटे ॥९॥
9. eṣa krośati natyūhastaṃ śikhī pratikūjati ,
ramaṇīye vanoddeśe puṣpasaṃstarasaṃkaṭe.

ramaṇīye vanoddeśe puṣpasaṃstarasaṅkaṭe

9. This curlew calls out, and the peacock echoes its cry. This happens in a charming forest area, dense with a carpet of flowers.
मातंगयूथानुसृतं पक्षिसंघानुनादितम् ।
चित्रकूटमिमं पश्य प्रवृद्धशिखरं गिरिम् ॥१०॥
10. mātaṃgayūthānusṛtaṃ pakṣisaṃghānunāditam ,
citrakūṭamimaṃ paśya pravṛddhaśikharaṃ girim.
10. mātaṅgayūthānusṛtam pakṣisaṃghānunāditam
citrakūṭam imam paśya pravṛddhaśikharam girim

10. Behold this Citrakūṭa mountain, with its towering peaks, traversed by herds of elephants, and resounding with the calls of bird flocks.
ततस्तौ पादचारेण गच्छन्तौ सह सीतया ।
रम्यमासेदतुः शैलं चित्रकूटं मनोरमम् ॥११॥
11. tatastau pādacāreṇa gacchantau saha sītayā ,
ramyamāsedatuḥ śailaṃ citrakūṭaṃ manoramam.
11. tataḥ tau pādacāreṇa gacchantau saha sītayā
ramyam āsedatuḥ śailam citrakūṭam manoramam
11. tataḥ sītayā saha pādacāreṇa gacchantau tau
ramyam manoramam citrakūṭam śailam āsedatuḥ
11. Thereupon, the two of them, traveling on foot accompanied by Sītā, reached the beautiful and charming Citrakūṭa mountain.
तं तु पर्वतमासाद्य नानापक्षिगणायुतम् ।
अयं वासो भवेत्तावदत्र सौम्य रमेमहि ॥१२॥
12. taṃ tu parvatamāsādya nānāpakṣigaṇāyutam ,
ayaṃ vāso bhavettāvadatra saumya ramemahi.
12. tam tu parvatam āsādya nānāpakṣigaṇāyutam
ayam vāsaḥ bhavet tāvat atra saumya ramemahi
12. saumya nānāpakṣigaṇāyutam tam parvatam āsādya
ayam tāvat vāsaḥ bhavet atra tu ramemahi
12. Having reached that mountain, which was crowded with various flocks of birds, (Rama said to Lakshmana,) "This should be our dwelling for now. O gentle one, let us find delight here."
लक्ष्मणानय दारूणि दृढानि च वराणि च ।
कुरुष्वावसथं सौम्य वासे मे ऽभिरतं मनः ॥१३॥
13. lakṣmaṇānaya dārūṇi dṛḍhāni ca varāṇi ca ,
kuruṣvāvasathaṃ saumya vāse me'bhirataṃ manaḥ.
13. lakṣmaṇa ānaya dārūṇi dṛḍhāni ca varāṇi ca
kuruṣva āvasatham saumya vāse me abhiratam manaḥ
13. lakṣmaṇa dṛḍhāni ca varāṇi ca dārūṇi ānaya saumya
āvasatham kuruṣva me manaḥ vāse abhiratam asti
13. Lakshmana, bring strong and excellent woods. O gentle one, construct a dwelling, for my mind is intent on residing here.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा सौमित्रिर्विविधान्द्रुमान् ।
आजहार ततश्चक्रे पर्ण शालामरिं दम ॥१४॥
14. tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā saumitrirvividhāndrumān ,
ājahāra tataścakre parṇa śālāmariṃ dama.
14. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā saumitriḥ vividhān
drumān ājahāra tataḥ cakre parṇaśālām ariṃdama
14. ariṃdama tasya tat vacanam śrutvā saumitriḥ
vividhān drumān ājahāra tataḥ parṇaśālām cakre
14. Hearing those words of his, Saumitri (Lakshmana), the subduer of foes, brought various trees and then constructed a leaf-hut.
शुश्रूषमाणमेकाग्रमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ।
ऐणेयं मांसमाहृत्य शालां यक्ष्यामहे वयम् ॥१५॥
15. śuśrūṣamāṇamekāgramidaṃ vacanamabravīt ,
aiṇeyaṃ māṃsamāhṛtya śālāṃ yakṣyāmahe vayam.
15. śuśrūṣamāṇam ekāgram idam vacanam abravīt
aiṇeyam māṃsam āhṛtya śālām yakṣyāmahe vayam

15. He spoke this to the one who was listening with single-minded attention: 'Having obtained deer meat, we will perform a Vedic ritual (yajña) in the dwelling.'
स लक्ष्मणः कृष्णमृगं हत्वा मेध्यं पतापवान् ।
अथ चिक्षेप सौमित्रिः समिद्धे जातवेदसि ॥१६॥
16. sa lakṣmaṇaḥ kṛṣṇamṛgaṃ hatvā medhyaṃ patāpavān ,
atha cikṣepa saumitriḥ samiddhe jātavedasi.
16. sa lakṣmaṇaḥ kṛṣṇamṛgam hatvā medhyam patāpavān
| atha cikṣepa saumitriḥ samiddhe jātavedasi
16. sa lakṣmaṇaḥ hatvā medhyam kṛṣṇamṛgam patāpavān

16. That glorious Lakṣmaṇa, having killed a pure black antelope (fit for a ritual offering), then Saumitri offered it into the blazing fire.
तं तु पक्वं समाज्ञाय निष्टप्तं छिन्नशोणितम् ।
लक्ष्मणः पुरुषव्याघ्रमथ राघवमब्रवीत् ॥१७॥
17. taṃ tu pakvaṃ samājñāya niṣṭaptaṃ chinnaśoṇitam ,
lakṣmaṇaḥ puruṣavyāghramatha rāghavamabravīt.
17. tam tu pakvam samājñāya niṣṭaptam chinnaśoṇitam
| lakṣmaṇaḥ puruṣavyāghram atha rāghavam abravīt
17. tu tam pakvam niṣṭaptam chinnaśoṇitam samājñāya

17. And having realized that (antelope) was cooked, well-roasted, and with its blood drained, Lakṣmaṇa then spoke to Rāghava, the tiger among men (puruṣa).
अयं कृष्णः समाप्ताङ्गः शृतः कृष्ण मृगो यथा ।
देवता देवसंकाश यजस्व कुशलो ह्यसि ॥१८॥
18. ayaṃ kṛṣṇaḥ samāptāṅgaḥ śṛtaḥ kṛṣṇa mṛgo yathā ,
devatā devasaṃkāśa yajasva kuśalo hyasi.
18. ayam kṛṣṇaḥ samāptāṅgaḥ śṛtaḥ kṛṣṇa mṛgaḥ yathā
| devatā devasaṅkāśa yajasva kuśalaḥ hi asi
18. devatā devasaṅkāśa ayam kṛṣṇaḥ samāptāṅgaḥ śṛtaḥ
kṛṣṇa mṛgaḥ yathā kuśalaḥ hi asi (iti) yajasva
18. O divine one, who resembles a deity, this black antelope (kṛṣṇamṛga) is completely cooked and prepared. Therefore, perform the ritual offering (yajña), for you are indeed skillful.
रामः स्नात्वा तु नियतो गुणवाञ्जप्यकोविदः ।
पापसंशमनं रामश्चकार बलिमुत्तमम् ॥१९॥
19. rāmaḥ snātvā tu niyato guṇavāñjapyakovidaḥ ,
pāpasaṃśamanaṃ rāmaścakāra balimuttamam.
19. rāmaḥ snātvā tu niyataḥ guṇavān japyakovidaḥ
| pāpasaṁśamanam rāmaḥ cakāra balim uttamam
19. rāmaḥ snātvā tu niyataḥ guṇavān japyakovidaḥ

19. Rāma, having bathed and being disciplined, virtuous, and skilled in chanting (japa), performed an excellent offering for the alleviation of sins.
तां वृक्षपर्णच्छदनां मनोज्ञां यथाप्रदेशं सुकृतां निवाताम् ।
वासाय सर्वे विविशुः समेताः सभां यथा देव गणाः सुधर्माम् ॥२०॥
20. tāṃ vṛkṣaparṇacchadanāṃ manojñāṃ yathāpradeśaṃ sukṛtāṃ nivātām ,
vāsāya sarve viviśuḥ sametāḥ sabhāṃ yathā deva gaṇāḥ sudharmām.
20. tām vṛkṣaparṇacchadanām manojñām
yathāpradeśam sukṛtām nivātām
vāsāya sarve viviśuḥ sametāḥ
sabhām yathā devagaṇāḥ sudharmām
20. sarve sametāḥ vāsāya tām

20. They all, having assembled, entered that beautiful hall (sabhā) which was covered with tree leaves, well-constructed for its location, and sheltered from the wind, just as the hosts of deities enter the divine assembly hall (Sudharmā).
अनेकनानामृगपक्षिसंकुले विचित्रपुष्पस्तबलैर्द्रुमैर्युते ।
वनोत्तमे व्यालमृगानुनादिते तथा विजह्रुः सुसुखं जितेन्द्रियाः ॥२१॥
21. anekanānāmṛgapakṣisaṃkule vicitrapuṣpastabalairdrumairyute ,
vanottame vyālamṛgānunādite tathā vijahruḥ susukhaṃ jitendriyāḥ.

vicitrapuṣpastabakaiḥ drumaiḥ yute
vanottame vyālamṛgānunādite tathā

21. In that excellent forest (vanottama), which was teeming with numerous kinds of animals and birds, adorned with trees bearing clusters of varied flowers, and resonant with the calls of fierce beasts, those who had mastered their senses (jitendriyāḥ) enjoyed themselves in great comfort.
सुरम्यमासाद्य तु चित्रकूटं नदीं च तां माल्यवतीं सुतीर्थाम् ।
ननन्द हृष्टो मृगपक्षिजुष्टां जहौ च दुःखं पुरविप्रवासात् ॥२२॥
22. suramyamāsādya tu citrakūṭaṃ nadīṃ ca tāṃ mālyavatīṃ sutīrthām ,
nananda hṛṣṭo mṛgapakṣijuṣṭāṃ jahau ca duḥkhaṃ puravipravāsāt.
22. suramyam āsādya tu citrakūṭam
nadīm ca tām mālyavatīm sutīrthām
nananda hṛṣṭaḥ mṛgapakṣijuṣṭām
jahau ca duḥkham puravipravāsāt

ca puravipravāsāt duḥkham jahau
22. Having arrived at the exceedingly beautiful Citrakūṭa and that river Mālyavatī, which possessed excellent bathing places, he, feeling joyful, delighted in this place frequented by deer and birds, and abandoned the grief caused by his exile from the city.
