तदज्ञानान्महत् पापं कृत्वा संकुलितेन्द्रियः ।
एकस्त्वचिन्तयं बुद्ध्या कथं नु सुकृतं भवेत् ॥१॥
1. tadajñānānmahat pāpaṃ kṛtvā saṃkulitendriyaḥ ,
ekastvacintayaṃ buddhyā kathaṃ nu sukṛtaṃ bhavet.

1. Because of that ignorance, having committed a great sin, and with my senses bewildered, I alone pondered with my intellect, 'How indeed can merit (sukṛta) be gained now?'
ततस्तं घटमादय पूर्णं परमवारिणा ।
आश्रमं तमहं प्राप्य यथाख्यातपथं गतः ॥२॥
2. tatastaṃ ghaṭamādaya pūrṇaṃ paramavāriṇā ,
āśramaṃ tamahaṃ prāpya yathākhyātapathaṃ gataḥ.
2. tataḥ tam ghaṭam ādāya pūrṇaṃ parama-vāriṇā
āśramaṃ tam aham prāpya yathā-khyāta-pathaṃ gataḥ
2. tataḥ aham gataḥ prāpya tam āśramaṃ yathā-khyāta-pathaṃ

2. Then, taking that pot filled with excellent water, I went and reached that hermitage (āśrama) by the path that had been described.
तत्राहं दुर्बलावन्धौ वृद्धावपरिणायकौ ।
अपश्यं तस्य पितरौ लूनपक्षाविव द्विजौ ॥३॥
3. tatrāhaṃ durbalāvandhau vṛddhāvapariṇāyakau ,
apaśyaṃ tasya pitarau lūnapakṣāviva dvijau.
3. tatra aham durbalau andhau vṛddhau apariṇāyakau
apaśyam tasya pitarau lūnapakṣau iva dvijau
3. aham tatra tasya durbalau andhau vṛddhau

3. There I saw his weak, blind, old parents, without a guide, just like two birds with clipped wings.
तन्निमित्ताभिरासीनौ कथाभिरपरिक्रमौ ।
तामाशां मत्कृते हीनाव् उदासीनावनाथवत् ॥४॥
4. tannimittābhirāsīnau kathābhiraparikramau ,
tāmāśāṃ matkṛte hīnāv udāsīnāvanāthavat.
4. tat-nimittābhiḥ āsīnau kathābhiḥ aparikramau
tām āśām matkṛte hīnau udāsīnau anāthavat
4. āsīnau aparikramau anāthavat tām āśām matkṛte
hīnau udāsīnau tat-nimittābhiḥ kathābhiḥ
4. They were sitting there, speaking stories concerning him, unable to move, deprived of that hope on my account, dejected, like helpless orphans.
पदशब्दं तु मे श्रुत्वा मुनिर्वाक्यमभाषत ।
किं चिरायसि मे पुत्र पानीयं क्षिप्रमानय ॥५॥
5. padaśabdaṃ tu me śrutvā munirvākyamabhāṣata ,
kiṃ cirāyasi me putra pānīyaṃ kṣipramānaya.
5. pada-śabdam tu me śrutvā muniḥ vākyam abhāṣata
kim cirāyasi me putra pānīyam kṣipram ānaya
5. tu me pada-śabdam śrutvā muniḥ vākyam abhāṣata
"me putra kim cirāyasi? kṣipram pānīyam ānaya"
5. Having heard my footsteps, the sage then spoke these words: 'My son, why are you delaying? Bring water quickly!'
यन्निमित्तमिदं तात सलिले क्रीडितं त्वया ।
उत्कण्ठिता ते मातेयं प्रविश क्षिप्रमाश्रमम् ॥६॥
6. yannimittamidaṃ tāta salile krīḍitaṃ tvayā ,
utkaṇṭhitā te māteyaṃ praviśa kṣipramāśramam.
6. yat-nimittam idam tāta salile krīḍitam tvayā
utkaṇṭhitā te mātā iyam praviśa kṣipram āśramam
6. tāta yat-nimittam idam tvayā salile krīḍitam,
te iyam mātā utkaṇṭhitā.
kṣipram āśramam praviśa.
6. Dear son (tāta), your mother here is anxious, for which reason this delay was made by you in the water. Quickly enter the hermitage (āśrama).
यद्व्यलीकं कृतं पुत्र मात्रा ते यदि वा मया ।
न तन्मनसि कर्तव्यं त्वया तात तपस्विना ॥७॥
7. yadvyalīkaṃ kṛtaṃ putra mātrā te yadi vā mayā ,
na tanmanasi kartavyaṃ tvayā tāta tapasvinā.
7. yat vyalīkam kṛtam putra mātrā te yadi vā mayā
na tat manasi kartavyam tvayā tāta tapasvinā
7. putra tāta tapasvinā te mātrā vā mayā yat
vyalīkam kṛtam tat manasi tvayā na kartavyam
7. O son, whatever offense was committed against you by your mother or by me, you, my dear ascetic, should not hold that in your mind.
त्वं गतिस्त्वगतीनां च चक्षुस्त्वं हीनचक्षुषाम् ।
समासक्तास्त्वयि प्राणाः किं चिन्नौ नाभिभाषसे ॥८॥
8. tvaṃ gatistvagatīnāṃ ca cakṣustvaṃ hīnacakṣuṣām ,
samāsaktāstvayi prāṇāḥ kiṃ cinnau nābhibhāṣase.
8. tvam gatiḥ tva agatīnām ca cakṣuḥ tvam hīnacakṣuṣām
samāsaktāḥ tvayi prāṇāḥ kim cit nau na abhibhāṣase
8. tvam tva agatīnām gatiḥ ca tvam hīnacakṣuṣām cakṣuḥ
prāṇāḥ tvayi samāsaktāḥ nau kim cit na abhibhāṣase
8. You are the refuge for your helpless, and you are the eyes for the blind. Our very lives depend on you; why do you not speak a word to us?
मुनिमव्यक्तया वाचा तमहं सज्जमानया ।
हीनव्यञ्जनया प्रेक्ष्य भीतो भीत इवाब्रुवम् ॥९॥
9. munimavyaktayā vācā tamahaṃ sajjamānayā ,
hīnavyañjanayā prekṣya bhīto bhīta ivābruvam.
9. munim avyaktayā vācā tam aham sajjamānayā
hīnavyajjanayā prekṣya bhītaḥ bhītaḥ iva abruvam
9. aham tam munim prekṣya bhītaḥ iva bhītaḥ
avyaktayā sajjamānayā hīnavyajjanayā vācā abruvam
9. When I saw that sage, I, being terrified as if truly afraid, spoke to him with a voice that was indistinct, faltering, and lacked clear articulation.
मनसः कर्म चेष्टाभिरभिसंस्तभ्य वाग्बलम् ।
आचचक्षे त्वहं तस्मै पुत्रव्यसनजं भयम् ॥१०॥
10. manasaḥ karma ceṣṭābhirabhisaṃstabhya vāgbalam ,
ācacakṣe tvahaṃ tasmai putravyasanajaṃ bhayam.
10. manasaḥ karma ceṣṭābhiḥ abhisaṃstabhya vāgbalam
ācacaksṣe tu aham tasmai putravyasanajam bhayam
10. aham ceṣṭābhiḥ manasaḥ karma vāgbalam abhisaṃstabhya
tu tasmai putravyasanajam bhayam ācacaksṣe
10. By restraining the agitation of my mind through my outward actions and steadying my power of speech, I then told him of the fear stemming from the misfortune concerning my son.
क्षत्रियो ऽहं दशरथो नाहं पुत्रो महात्मनः ।
सज्जनावमतं दुःखमिदं प्राप्तं स्वकर्मजम् ॥११॥
11. kṣatriyo'haṃ daśaratho nāhaṃ putro mahātmanaḥ ,
sajjanāvamataṃ duḥkhamidaṃ prāptaṃ svakarmajam.
11. kṣatriyaḥ aham daśarathaḥ na aham putraḥ mahātmanaḥ
sajjana avamatam duḥkham idam prāptam svakarmajam
11. aham kṣatriyaḥ daśarathaḥ aham mahātmanaḥ putraḥ
na idam sajjanāvamatam svakarmajam duḥkham prāptam
11. I am Daśaratha, a kṣatriya, but I am not truly the son of a great soul. This sorrow, which is condemned by virtuous people and born of my own actions (karma), I have now incurred.
भगवंश्चापहस्तो ऽहं सरयूतीरमागतः ।
जिघांसुः श्वापदं किं चिन्निपाने वागतं गजम् ॥१२॥
12. bhagavaṃścāpahasto'haṃ sarayūtīramāgataḥ ,
jighāṃsuḥ śvāpadaṃ kiṃ cinnipāne vāgataṃ gajam.
12. bhagavan ca cāpahastaḥ aham sarayū tīram āgataḥ
jighāṃsuḥ śvāpadam kim cit nipāne vā āgatam gajam
12. bhagavan,
aham cāpahastaḥ sarayū tīram āgataḥ (aham) kim cit śvāpadam vā nipāne āgatam gajam jighāṃsuḥ
12. Oh venerable one, I, with a bow in my hand, came to the bank of the Sarayū, desiring to kill some wild animal or an elephant that had come to a watering place.
तत्र श्रुतो मया शब्दो जले कुम्भस्य पूर्यतः ।
द्विपो ऽयमिति मत्वा हि बाणेनाभिहतो मया ॥१३॥
13. tatra śruto mayā śabdo jale kumbhasya pūryataḥ ,
dvipo'yamiti matvā hi bāṇenābhihato mayā.
13. tatra śrutaḥ mayā śabdaḥ jale kumbhasya pūryataḥ
dvipaḥ ayam iti matvā hi bāṇena abhihataḥ mayā
13. tatra mayā jale kumbhasya pūryataḥ śabdaḥ śrutaḥ
ayam dvipaḥ iti matvā hi mayā bāṇena abhihataḥ
13. There, I heard a sound in the water, like a pot being filled. Indeed, thinking 'this is an elephant', I struck it with an arrow.
गत्वा नद्यास्ततस्तीरमपश्यमिषुणा हृदि ।
विनिर्भिन्नं गतप्राणं शयानं भुवि तापसं ॥१४॥
14. gatvā nadyāstatastīramapaśyamiṣuṇā hṛdi ,
vinirbhinnaṃ gataprāṇaṃ śayānaṃ bhuvi tāpasaṃ.
14. gatvā nadhyāḥ tataḥ tīram apaśyam iṣuṇā hṛdi
vinirbhinnam gataprāṇam śayānam bhuvi tāpasam
14. tataḥ nadhyāḥ tīram gatvā,
iṣuṇā hṛdi vinirbhinnam gataprāṇam bhuvi śayānam tāpasam apaśyam
14. Having then gone to the bank of the river, I saw a hermit lying on the ground, pierced through the heart by an arrow and bereft of life.
भगवञ् शब्दमालक्ष्य मया गजजिघांसुना ।
विसृष्टो ऽम्भसि नाराचस्तेन ते निहतः सुतः ॥१५॥
15. bhagavañ śabdamālakṣya mayā gajajighāṃsunā ,
visṛṣṭo'mbhasi nārācastena te nihataḥ sutaḥ.
15. bhagavan śabdam ālakṣya mayā gajajighāṃsunā
visṛṣṭaḥ ambhasi nārācaḥ tena te nihataḥ sutaḥ
15. bhagavan mayā gajajighāṃsunā śabdam ālakṣya
ambhasi nārācaḥ visṛṣṭaḥ tena te sutaḥ nihataḥ
15. O revered sir, I aimed at a sound, intending to kill an elephant, and released an iron arrow into the water. By that very arrow, your son was killed.
स चोद्धृतेन बाणेन तत्रैव स्वर्गमास्थितः ।
भगवन्ताव् उभौ शोचन्नन्धाविति विलप्य च ॥१६॥
16. sa coddhṛtena bāṇena tatraiva svargamāsthitaḥ ,
bhagavantāv ubhau śocannandhāviti vilapya ca.
16. sa ca uddhṛtena bāṇena tatra eva svargam āsthitaḥ
bhagavantau ubhau śocan andhau iti vilapya ca
16. ca sa uddhṛtena bāṇena tatra eva svargam āsthitaḥ
ca bhagavantau ubhau andhau iti śocan vilapya
16. And he, after the arrow was extracted, immediately ascended to heaven, while lamenting and weeping, thinking of both of you, revered sirs, as blind.
अज्ञानाद्भवतः पुत्रः सहसाभिहतो मया ।
शेषमेवंगते यत् स्यात्तत् प्रसीदतु मे मुनिः ॥१७॥
17. ajñānādbhavataḥ putraḥ sahasābhihato mayā ,
śeṣamevaṃgate yat syāttat prasīdatu me muniḥ.
17. ajñānāt bhavataḥ putraḥ sahasā abhihataḥ mayā
śeṣam evaṃgate yat syāt tat prasīdatu me muniḥ
17. mayā ajñānāt sahasā bhavataḥ putraḥ abhihataḥ
evaṃgate yat śeṣam syāt tat me muniḥ prasīdatu
17. Unknowingly, and by accident, your son was killed by me. Now that this has happened, whatever remains, may the sage forgive me for it.
स तच्छ्रुत्वा वचः क्रूरं निःश्वसञ् शोककर्शितः ।
मामुवाच महातेजाः कृताञ्जलिमुपस्थितम् ॥१८॥
18. sa tacchrutvā vacaḥ krūraṃ niḥśvasañ śokakarśitaḥ ,
māmuvāca mahātejāḥ kṛtāñjalimupasthitam.
18. sa tat śrutvā vacaḥ krūram niḥśvasan śokakarśitaḥ
mām uvāca mahātejāḥ kṛtāñjalim upasthitam
18. sa krūram vacaḥ tat śrutvā niḥśvasan śokakarśitaḥ
mahātejāḥ kṛtāñjalim upasthitam mām uvāca
18. Having heard that cruel speech, he, (the sage) sighing and emaciated by grief, the greatly glorious one, then spoke to me, who stood before him with clasped hands.
यद्येतदशुभं कर्म न स्म मे कथयेः स्वयम् ।
फलेन्मूर्धा स्म ते राजन् सद्यः शतसहस्रधा ॥१९॥
19. yadyetadaśubhaṃ karma na sma me kathayeḥ svayam ,
phalenmūrdhā sma te rājan sadyaḥ śatasahasradhā.
19. yadi etat aśubham karma na sma me kathayeḥ svayam
phalet mūrdhā sma te rājan sadyaḥ śatasahasradhā
19. rājan yadi etat aśubham karma svayam me na kathayeḥ
sma te mūrdhā sadyaḥ śatasahasradhā phalet sma
19. O king, if you yourself had not told me about this inauspicious deed (karma), your head would immediately have split into hundreds of thousands of pieces.
क्षत्रियेण वधो राजन् वानप्रस्थे विशेषतः ।
ज्ञानपूर्वं कृतः स्थानाच्च्यावयेदपि वज्रिणम् ॥२०॥
20. kṣatriyeṇa vadho rājan vānaprasthe viśeṣataḥ ,
jñānapūrvaṃ kṛtaḥ sthānāccyāvayedapi vajriṇam.
20. kṣatriyeṇa vadhaḥ rājan vānaprasathe viśeṣataḥ
jñānapūrvam kṛtaḥ sthānāt cyāvayet api vajriṇam
20. rājan kṣatriyeṇa jñānapūrvam kṛtaḥ vadhaḥ viśeṣataḥ
vānaprasathe vajriṇam api sthānāt cyāvayet
20. O king, the killing of an ascetic in the forest (vānaprastha) by a kshatriya, especially when done knowingly, would displace even Indra (Vajrin) from his station.
अज्ञानाद्धि कृतं यस्मादिदं तेनैव जीवसि ।
अपि ह्यद्य कुलं नस्याद् राघवाणां कुतो भवान् ॥२१॥
21. ajñānāddhi kṛtaṃ yasmādidaṃ tenaiva jīvasi ,
api hyadya kulaṃ nasyād rāghavāṇāṃ kuto bhavān.
21. ajñānāt hi kṛtam yasmāt idam tena eva jīvasi api
hi adya kulam na syāt rāghavāṇām kutaḥ bhavān
21. yasmāt idam ajñānāt hi kṛtam tena eva jīvasi api
hi adya rāghavāṇām kulam na syāt bhavān kutaḥ
21. Indeed, because this deed was done out of ignorance, you are still alive. Otherwise, today the lineage of the Raghus would not exist, and where would you be?
नय नौ नृप तं देशमिति मां चाभ्यभाषत ।
अद्य तं द्रष्टुमिच्छावः पुत्रं पश्चिमदर्शनम् ॥२२॥
22. naya nau nṛpa taṃ deśamiti māṃ cābhyabhāṣata ,
adya taṃ draṣṭumicchāvaḥ putraṃ paścimadarśanam.
22. naya nau nṛpa tam deśam iti mām ca abhyabhāṣata
adya tam draṣṭum icchāvaḥ putram paścimadarśanam
22. nṛpa nau tam deśam naya iti ca mām abhyabhāṣata
adya tam putram paścimadarśanam draṣṭum icchāvaḥ
22. "O king, lead us two to that place," he also said to me. "Today we wish to see our son for the last time."
रुधिरेणावसिताङ्गं प्रकीर्णाजिनवाससं ।
शयानं भुवि निःसंज्ञं धर्मराजवशं गतम् ॥२३॥
23. rudhireṇāvasitāṅgaṃ prakīrṇājinavāsasaṃ ,
śayānaṃ bhuvi niḥsaṃjñaṃ dharmarājavaśaṃ gatam.
23. rudhireṇa avasitāṅgam prakīrṇājinavāsasam
śayānam bhuvi niḥsaṃjñam dharmarājavaśam gatam
23. rudhireṇa avasitāṅgam prakīrṇājinavāsasam

23. His limbs were smeared with blood, his deer-skin garment lay scattered, and he was lying unconscious on the ground, having fallen under the sway of the King of natural law (Dharmarāja).
अथाहमेकस्तं देशं नीत्वा तौ भृशदुःखितौ ।
अस्पर्शयमहं पुत्रं तं मुनिं सह भार्यया ॥२४॥
24. athāhamekastaṃ deśaṃ nītvā tau bhṛśaduḥkhitau ,
asparśayamahaṃ putraṃ taṃ muniṃ saha bhāryayā.
24. atha aham ekaḥ tam deśam nītvā tau bhṛśaduḥkhitau
asparśayam aham putram tam munim saha bhāryayā
24. atha aham ekaḥ tau bhṛśaduḥkhitau tam deśam nītvā
aham putram tam munim saha bhāryayā asparśayam
24. Then I, alone, having led those two intensely grieved individuals (the parents) to that place, caused them to touch that son, that sage, who was accompanied by his wife.
तौ पुत्रमात्मनः स्पृष्ट्वा तमासाद्य तपस्विनौ ।
निपेततुः शरीरे ऽस्य पिता चास्येदमब्रवीत् ॥२५॥
25. tau putramātmanaḥ spṛṣṭvā tamāsādya tapasvinau ,
nipetatuḥ śarīre'sya pitā cāsyedamabravīt.
25. tau putram ātmanaḥ spṛṣṭvā tam āsādya tapasvinau
nipetatuḥ śarīre asya pitā ca asya idam abravīt
25. tau tapasvinau ātmanaḥ putram spṛṣṭvā tam āsādya
asya śarīre nipetatuḥ ca asya pitā idam abravīt
25. Having touched their own son and reached him, those two ascetics fell upon his body. And his father said this:
न न्वहं ते प्रियः पुत्र मातरं पश्य धार्मिक ।
किं नु नालिङ्गसे पुत्र सुकुमार वचो वद ॥२६॥
26. na nvahaṃ te priyaḥ putra mātaraṃ paśya dhārmika ,
kiṃ nu nāliṅgase putra sukumāra vaco vada.
26. na nu aham te priyaḥ putra mātaram paśya dharmika
kim nu na āliṅgase putra sukumāra vacaḥ vada
26. putra te aham nu na priyaḥ dharmika mātaram paśya
putra sukumāra kim nu na āliṅgase vacaḥ vada
26. My son, am I not dear to you? O righteous one (dharmika), look at your mother! Why do you not embrace (us), my son, O tender one? Speak a word!
कस्य वापररात्रे ऽहं श्रोष्यामि हृदयंगमम् ।
अधीयानस्य मधुरं शास्त्रं वान्यद्विशेषतः ॥२७॥
27. kasya vāpararātre'haṃ śroṣyāmi hṛdayaṃgamam ,
adhīyānasya madhuraṃ śāstraṃ vānyadviśeṣataḥ.
27. kasya vā apararātre aham śroṣyāmi hṛdayaṅgamam
adhīyānasya madhuram śāstram vā anyat viśeṣataḥ
27. aham apararātre kasya adhīyānasya hṛdayaṅgamam
madhuram śāstram vā anyat viśeṣataḥ śroṣyāmi vā?
27. In the latter part of the night, whose heart-pleasing and sweet scripture, or other discourse, will I hear being recited by a student, particularly?
को मां संध्यामुपास्यैव स्नात्वा हुतहुताशनः ।
श्लाघयिष्यत्युपासीनः पुत्रशोकभयार्दितम् ॥२८॥
28. ko māṃ saṃdhyāmupāsyaiva snātvā hutahutāśanaḥ ,
ślāghayiṣyatyupāsīnaḥ putraśokabhayārditam.
28. kaḥ mām sandhyām upāsya eva snātvā hutahutāśanaḥ
ślāghayiṣyati upāsīnaḥ putraśokabhayārditam
28. kaḥ sandhyām upāsya eva snātvā hutahutāśanaḥ
upāsīnaḥ putraśokabhayārditam mām ślāghayiṣyati?
28. Having bathed, performed the twilight devotion, and offered oblations to the fire, who will sit near me and console me, who am distressed by the grief and fear for my son?
कन्दमूलफलं हृत्वा को मां प्रियमिवातिथिम् ।
भोजयिष्यत्यकर्मण्यमप्रग्रहमनायकम् ॥२९॥
29. kandamūlaphalaṃ hṛtvā ko māṃ priyamivātithim ,
bhojayiṣyatyakarmaṇyamapragrahamanāyakam.
29. kandamūlaphalam hṛtvā kaḥ mām priyam iva atithim
bhojayisyati akarmaṇyam apragraham anāyakam
29. kaḥ kandamūlaphalam hṛtvā akarmaṇyam apragraham
anāyakam mām priyam atithim iva bhojayisyati?
29. Who, having gathered roots, tubers, and fruits, will feed me - inactive, without support, and without a leader - as if I were a beloved guest?
इमामन्धां च वृद्धां च मातरं ते तपस्विनीम् ।
कथं पुत्र भरिष्यामि कृपणां पुत्रगर्धिनीम् ॥३०॥
30. imāmandhāṃ ca vṛddhāṃ ca mātaraṃ te tapasvinīm ,
kathaṃ putra bhariṣyāmi kṛpaṇāṃ putragardhinīm.
30. imām andhām ca vṛddhām ca mātaram te tapasvinīm
katham putra bhariṣyāmi kṛpaṇām putragardhinīm
30. putra,
katham aham te imām andhām ca vṛddhām ca tapasvinīm kṛpaṇām putragardhinīm mātaram bhariṣyāmi?
30. O son, how will I support your mother, who is blind, old, unfortunate, wretched, and longing for her son?
तिष्ठ मा मा गमः पुत्र यमस्य सदनं प्रति ।
श्वो मया सह गन्तासि जनन्या च समेधितः ॥३१॥
31. tiṣṭha mā mā gamaḥ putra yamasya sadanaṃ prati ,
śvo mayā saha gantāsi jananyā ca samedhitaḥ.
31. tiṣṭha mā mā gamaḥ putra yamasya sadanam prati
śvaḥ mayā saha gantā asi jananyā ca samedhitaḥ
31. putra tiṣṭha mā mā yamasya sadanam prati gamaḥ
śvaḥ mayā jananyā ca saha samedhitaḥ gantā asi
31. Stay, my son! Do not, do not go to the abode of Yama. Tomorrow you will go there with me and your mother, (you) who have been cherished (by us).
उभावपि च शोकार्तावनाथौ कृपणौ वने ।
क्षिप्रमेव गमिष्यावस्त्वया हीनौ यमक्षयम् ॥३२॥
32. ubhāvapi ca śokārtāvanāthau kṛpaṇau vane ,
kṣiprameva gamiṣyāvastvayā hīnau yamakṣayam.
32. ubhau api ca śokārtau anāthau kṛpaṇau vane
kṣipram eva gamiṣyāvaḥ tvayā hīnau yamakṣayam
32. ca ubhau api śokārtau anāthau kṛpaṇau vane
tvayā hīnau kṣipram eva yamakṣayam gamiṣyāvaḥ
32. And both of us, afflicted by sorrow, without a protector, and wretched in the forest, will very quickly go to Yama's abode, bereft of you.
ततो वैवस्वतं दृष्ट्वा तं प्रवक्ष्यामि भारतीम् ।
क्षमतां धर्मराजो मे बिभृयात् पितरावयम् ॥३३॥
33. tato vaivasvataṃ dṛṣṭvā taṃ pravakṣyāmi bhāratīm ,
kṣamatāṃ dharmarājo me bibhṛyāt pitarāvayam.
33. tataḥ vaivasvatam dṛṣṭvā tam pravakṣyāmi bhāratīm
kṣamatām dharmarājaḥ me bibhṛyāt pitarau ayam
33. tataḥ vaivasvatam dṛṣṭvā tam bhāratīm pravakṣyāmi
dharmarājaḥ me kṣamatām ayam pitarau bibhṛyāt
33. Then, having seen Yama, the son of Vivasvat, I will address him, saying, 'May the King of (natural) law (dharma) be merciful to me. May this (son) sustain his parents (us).'
अपापो ऽसि यथा पुत्र निहतः पापकर्मणा ।
तेन सत्येन गच्छाशु ये लोकाः शस्त्रयोधिनाम् ॥३४॥
34. apāpo'si yathā putra nihataḥ pāpakarmaṇā ,
tena satyena gacchāśu ye lokāḥ śastrayodhinām.
34. apāpaḥ asi yathā putra nihataḥ pāpakarmaṇā tena
satyena gaccha āśu ye lokāḥ śastrayodhinām
34. putra yathā tvam apāpaḥ asi pāpakarmaṇā nihataḥ
tena satyena āśu gaccha ye śastrayodhinām lokāḥ
34. My son, just as you are sinless, having been slain by an evil-doer, by that truth, quickly go to those worlds that are for warriors.
यान्ति शूरा गतिं यां च संग्रामेष्वनिवर्तिनः ।
हतास्त्वभिमुखाः पुत्र गतिं तां परमां व्रज ॥३५॥
35. yānti śūrā gatiṃ yāṃ ca saṃgrāmeṣvanivartinaḥ ,
hatāstvabhimukhāḥ putra gatiṃ tāṃ paramāṃ vraja.
35. yānti śūrāḥ gatim yām ca saṅgrāmeṣu anivartinaḥ
hatāḥ tu abhimukhāḥ putra gatim tām paramām vraja
35. putra śūrāḥ anivartinaḥ saṅgrāmeṣu yām gatim yānti
ca abhimukhāḥ hatāḥ tu tām paramām gatim vraja
35. O son, attain that supreme destination which valiant warriors who do not turn back in battles achieve, and which is attained by those killed while facing forward.
यां गतिं सगरः शैब्यो दिलीपो जनमेजयः ।
नहुषो धुन्धुमारश्च प्राप्तास्तां गच्छ पुत्रक ॥३६॥
36. yāṃ gatiṃ sagaraḥ śaibyo dilīpo janamejayaḥ ,
nahuṣo dhundhumāraśca prāptāstāṃ gaccha putraka.
36. yām gatim sagaraḥ śaibyaḥ dilīpaḥ janamejayaḥ
nahuṣaḥ dhundhumāraḥ ca prāptāḥ tām gaccha putraka
36. putraka sagaraḥ śaibyaḥ dilīpaḥ janamejayaḥ nahuṣaḥ
dhundhumāraḥ ca yām gatim prāptāḥ tām gaccha
36. O dear son, attain that destination which Sagara, Śaibya, Dilīpa, Janamejaya, Nahuṣa, and Dhundhumāra attained.
या गतिः सर्वसाधूनां स्वाध्यायात् पतसश्च या ।
भूमिदस्याहिताग्नेश्च एकपत्नीव्रतस्य च ॥३७॥
37. yā gatiḥ sarvasādhūnāṃ svādhyāyāt patasaśca yā ,
bhūmidasyāhitāgneśca ekapatnīvratasya ca.
37. yā gatiḥ sarvasādhūnām svādhyāyāt tapasas ca
yā bhūmidasya āhitāgneḥ ca ekapatnīvratasya ca
37. yā gatiḥ sarvasādhūnām svādhyāyāt ca tapasas yā
ca bhūmidasya ca āhitāgneḥ ca ekapatnīvratasya
37. Which is the destination of all righteous persons, and which results from self-study (svādhyāya), from asceticism (tapas), from giving land, from maintaining sacred fires (āhitāgni), and from the vow of a single wife.
गोसहस्रप्रदातॄणां या या गुरुभृतामपि ।
देहन्यासकृतां या च तां गतिं गच्छ पुत्रक ।
न हि त्वस्मिन् कुले जातो गच्छत्यकुशलां गतिम् ॥३८॥
38. gosahasrapradātṝṇāṃ yā yā gurubhṛtāmapi ,
dehanyāsakṛtāṃ yā ca tāṃ gatiṃ gaccha putraka ,
na hi tvasmin kule jāto gacchatyakuśalāṃ gatim.
38. gosahasrapradātṝṇām yā yā gurubhṛtām
api dehan'yāsakṛtām yā ca tām
gatim gaccha putraka na hi tu asmin
kule jātaḥ gacchati akuśalām gatim
38. putraka yā yā gosahasrapradātṝṇām
api gurubhṛtām ca yā dehan'yāsakṛtām
tām gatim gaccha hi asmin kule
jātaḥ tu akuśalām gatim na gacchati
38. O dear son, attain that destination which is attained by givers of a thousand cows, and also by those who support their preceptors (guru), and by those who have sacrificed their bodies. Indeed, no one born in this family attains an inauspicious destination.
एवं स कृपणं तत्र पर्यदेवयतासकृत् ।
ततो ऽस्मै कर्तुमुदकं प्रवृत्तः सह भार्यया ॥३९॥
39. evaṃ sa kṛpaṇaṃ tatra paryadevayatāsakṛt ,
tato'smai kartumudakaṃ pravṛttaḥ saha bhāryayā.
39. evam saḥ kṛpaṇaṃ tatra paryadevayata asakṛt
tataḥ asmai kartum udakaṃ pravṛttaḥ saha bhāryayā
39. saḥ evam kṛpaṇaṃ tatra asakṛt paryadevayata
tataḥ saha bhāryayā asmai udakaṃ kartum pravṛttaḥ
39. Thus, he lamented piteously there repeatedly. Then, with his wife, he proceeded to offer water libations for him.
स तु दिव्येन रूपेण मुनिपुत्रः स्वकर्मभिः ।
आश्वास्य च मुहूर्तं तु पितरौ वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥४०॥
40. sa tu divyena rūpeṇa muniputraḥ svakarmabhiḥ ,
āśvāsya ca muhūrtaṃ tu pitarau vākyamabravīt.
40. saḥ tu divyena rūpeṇa muniputraḥ svakarmabhiḥ
āśvāsya ca muhūrtaṃ tu pitarau vākyam abravīt
40. saḥ tu muniputraḥ svakarmabhiḥ divyena rūpeṇa
muhūrtaṃ pitarau ca āśvāsya vākyam abravīt
40. But the ascetic's son, by virtue of his own actions (karma), appeared in a divine form. Having consoled his parents for a moment, he spoke these words.
स्थानमस्मि महत् प्राप्तो भवतोः परिचारणात् ।
भवन्तावपि च क्षिप्रं मम मूलमुपैष्यतः ॥४१॥
41. sthānamasmi mahat prāpto bhavatoḥ paricāraṇāt ,
bhavantāvapi ca kṣipraṃ mama mūlamupaiṣyataḥ.
41. sthānam asmi mahat prāptaḥ bhavatoḥ paricāraṇāt
bhavantau api ca kṣipraṃ mama mūlam upaiṣyataḥ
41. mahat sthānam prāptaḥ asmi bhavatoḥ paricāraṇāt
ca bhavantau api kṣipraṃ mama mūlam upaiṣyataḥ
41. I have attained a great state by virtue of serving you both. And you two will also swiftly come to my abode.
एवमुक्त्वा तु दिव्येन विमानेन वपुष्मता ।
आरुरोह दिवं क्षिप्रं मुनिपुत्रो जितेन्द्रियः ॥४२॥
42. evamuktvā tu divyena vimānena vapuṣmatā ,
āruroha divaṃ kṣipraṃ muniputro jitendriyaḥ.
42. evam uktvā tu divyena vimānena vapuṣmatā
ārūroha divam kṣipraṃ muniputraḥ jitendriyaḥ
42. evam uktvā tu jitendriyaḥ muniputraḥ divyena
vapuṣmatā vimānena kṣipraṃ divam ārūroha
42. Thus having spoken, the ascetic's son, who had mastered his senses (jitendriya), swiftly ascended to heaven in a resplendent, divine aerial chariot.
स कृत्वा तूदकं तूर्णं तापसः सह भार्यया ।
मामुवाच महातेजाः कृताञ्जलिमुपस्थितम् ॥४३॥
43. sa kṛtvā tūdakaṃ tūrṇaṃ tāpasaḥ saha bhāryayā ,
māmuvāca mahātejāḥ kṛtāñjalimupasthitam.
43. sa kṛtvā tu udakam tūrṇam tāpasaḥ saha bhāryayā
mām uvāca mahātejāḥ kṛtāñjalim upasthitam
43. saḥ mahātejāḥ tāpasaḥ tu bhāryayā saha tūrṇam
udakam kṛtvā kṛtāñjalim upasthitam mām uvāca
43. That greatly resplendent ascetic, accompanied by his wife, quickly performed the water ritual. Then he spoke to me, who stood before him with folded hands.
अद्यैव जहि मां राजन्मरणे नास्ति मे व्यथा ।
यच्छरेणैकपुत्रं मां त्वमकार्षीरपुत्रकम् ॥४४॥
44. adyaiva jahi māṃ rājanmaraṇe nāsti me vyathā ,
yacchareṇaikaputraṃ māṃ tvamakārṣīraputrakam.
44. adya eva jahi mām rājan maraṇe na asti me vyathā
yat śareṇa ekaputram mām tvam akārṣīḥ aputrakam
44. rājan,
adya eva mām jahi.
maraṇe me vyathā na asti.
yat tvam śareṇa ekaputram mām aputrakam akārṣīḥ
44. "O King, kill me right now; I have no distress (vyathā) in death. For by your arrow, you have rendered me, who had only one son, completely sonless."
त्वया तु यदविज्ञानान्निहतो मे सुतः शुचिः ।
तेन त्वामभिशप्स्यामि सुदुःखमतिदारुणम् ॥४५॥
45. tvayā tu yadavijñānānnihato me sutaḥ śuciḥ ,
tena tvāmabhiśapsyāmi suduḥkhamatidāruṇam.
45. tvayā tu yat avijñānāt nihataḥ me sutaḥ śuciḥ
tena tvām abhiśapsyāmi suduḥkham atidāruṇam
45. tvayā tu yat avijñānāt me śuciḥ sutaḥ nihataḥ,
tena (aham) tvām atidāruṇam suduḥkham abhiśapsyāmi
45. "Because my innocent son was killed by you due to your ignorance, I will therefore curse you with an exceedingly dreadful and intense sorrow."
पुत्रव्यसनजं दुःखं यदेतन्मम साम्प्रतम् ।
एवं त्वं पुत्रशोकेन राजन् कालं करिष्यसि ॥४६॥
46. putravyasanajaṃ duḥkhaṃ yadetanmama sāmpratam ,
evaṃ tvaṃ putraśokena rājan kālaṃ kariṣyasi.
46. putravyasanajam duḥkham yat etat mama sāmpratam
evam tvam putraśokena rājan kālam kariṣyasi
46. rājan,
yat etat sāmpratam mama putravyasanajam duḥkham (asti),
evam tvam putraśokena kālam kariṣyasi
46. "The grief (duḥkham) arising from the calamity of losing a son that is now mine – O King, you too shall similarly meet your end (kālam kariṣyasi) through the sorrow of losing a son."
तस्मान्मामागतं भद्रे तस्योदारस्य तद्वचः ।
यदहं पुत्रशोकेन संत्यक्ष्याम्यद्य जीवितम् ॥४७॥
47. tasmānmāmāgataṃ bhadre tasyodārasya tadvacaḥ ,
yadahaṃ putraśokena saṃtyakṣyāmyadya jīvitam.
47. tasmāt mām āgatam bhadre tasya udārasya tat vacaḥ
yat aham putraśokena saṃtyakṣyāmi adya jīvitam
47. bhadre tasmāt udārasya tasya tat vacaḥ mām āgatam
yat aham putraśokena adya jīvitam saṃtyakṣyāmi
47. Therefore, O revered lady, that word of his, the noble one, has reached me: that I shall give up my life today due to the grief for my son.
यदि मां संस्पृशेद् रामः सकृदद्यालभेत वा ।
न तन्मे सदृशं देवि यन्मया राघवे कृतम् ॥४८॥
48. yadi māṃ saṃspṛśed rāmaḥ sakṛdadyālabheta vā ,
na tanme sadṛśaṃ devi yanmayā rāghave kṛtam.
48. yadi mām saṃspṛśet rāmaḥ sakṛt adya ālabheta vā
na tat me sadṛśam devi yat mayā rāghave kṛtam
48. devi yadi rāmaḥ sakṛt adya mām saṃspṛśet vā
ālabheta tat yat mayā rāghave kṛtam me sadṛśam na
48. O goddess, even if Rama were to touch or embrace me just once today, what I have done to Raghava (Rama) is not appropriate for me.
चक्षुषा त्वां न पश्यामि स्मृतिर्मम विलुप्यते ।
दूता वैवस्वतस्यैते कौसल्ये त्वरयन्ति माम् ॥४९॥
49. cakṣuṣā tvāṃ na paśyāmi smṛtirmama vilupyate ,
dūtā vaivasvatasyaite kausalye tvarayanti mām.
49. cakṣuṣā tvām na paśyāmi smṛtiḥ mama vilupyate
dūtāḥ vaivasvatasya ete kausalye tvarayanti mām
49. kausalye (aham) cakṣuṣā tvām na paśyāmi mama smṛtiḥ
vilupyate ete vaivasvatasya dūtāḥ mām tvarayanti
49. O Kausalya, I cannot see you with my eyes, and my memory (smṛti) is fading. These messengers of Yama (Vaivasvata) are rushing me away.
अतस्तु किं दुःखतरं यदहं जीवितक्षये ।
न हि पश्यामि धर्मज्ञं रामं सत्यपराक्यमम् ॥५०॥
50. atastu kiṃ duḥkhataraṃ yadahaṃ jīvitakṣaye ,
na hi paśyāmi dharmajñaṃ rāmaṃ satyaparākyamam.
50. ataḥ tu kim duḥkhataram yat aham jīvitakṣaye
na hi paśyāmi dharmajñam rāmam satyaparākramam
50. ataḥ tu kim duḥkhataram (asti) yat aham jīvitakṣaye
dharmajñam satyaparākramam rāmam hi na paśyāmi
50. Therefore, what could be more sorrowful than the fact that I, at the end of my life, indeed do not see Rama, the one who knows natural law (dharma) and whose valor is truth?
न ते मनुष्या देवास्ते ये चारुशुभकुण्डलम् ।
मुखं द्रक्ष्यन्ति रामस्य वर्षे पञ्चदशे पुनः ॥५१॥
51. na te manuṣyā devāste ye cāruśubhakuṇḍalam ,
mukhaṃ drakṣyanti rāmasya varṣe pañcadaśe punaḥ.
51. na te manuṣyāḥ devāḥ te ye cāruśubhakuṇḍalam
mukham drakṣyanti rāmasya varṣe pañcadaśe punaḥ
51. ye rāmasya cāruśubhakuṇḍalam mukham pañcadaśe
varṣe punaḥ drakṣyanti te manuṣyāḥ na te devāḥ
51. Those who will see Rama's face, adorned with beautiful and auspicious earrings, again in the fifteenth year (after his return from exile), they are not mere humans; they are gods.
पद्मपत्रेक्षणं सुभ्रु सुदंष्ट्रं चारुनासिकम् ।
धन्या द्रक्ष्यन्ति रामस्य ताराधिपनिभं मुखम् ॥५२॥
52. padmapatrekṣaṇaṃ subhru sudaṃṣṭraṃ cārunāsikam ,
dhanyā drakṣyanti rāmasya tārādhipanibhaṃ mukham.
52. padmapatrekṣaṇam subhru sudamṣṭram cārunāsikam
dhanyāḥ drakṣyanti rāmasya tārādhipanibham mukham
52. dhanyāḥ rāmasya padmapatrekṣaṇam subhru sudamṣṭram
cārunāsikam tārādhipanibham mukham drakṣyanti
52. Blessed are those who will see Rama's face, which has eyes like lotus petals, beautiful eyebrows, lovely teeth, a graceful nose, and resembles the moon.
सदृशं शारदस्येन्दोः फुल्लस्य कमलस्य च ।
सुगन्धि मम नाथस्य धन्या द्रक्ष्यन्ति तन्मुखम् ॥५३॥
53. sadṛśaṃ śāradasyendoḥ phullasya kamalasya ca ,
sugandhi mama nāthasya dhanyā drakṣyanti tanmukham.
53. sadṛśam śāradasya indoḥ phullasya kamalasya ca
sugandhi mama nāthasya dhanyāḥ drakṣyanti tat mukham
53. dhanyāḥ mama nāthasya śāradasya indoḥ phullasya
kamalasya ca sadṛśam sugandhi tat mukham drakṣyanti
53. Blessed are those who will see that fragrant face of my lord, which is similar to the autumn moon and a blooming lotus.
निवृत्तवनवासं तमयोध्यां पुनरागतम् ।
द्रक्ष्यन्ति सुखिनो रामं शुक्रं मार्गगतं यथा ॥५४॥
54. nivṛttavanavāsaṃ tamayodhyāṃ punarāgatam ,
drakṣyanti sukhino rāmaṃ śukraṃ mārgagataṃ yathā.
54. nivṛttavanavāsam tam ayodhyām punaḥ āgatam
drakṣyanti sukhinaḥ rāmam śukram mārgagatam yathā
54. sukhinah nivṛttavanavāsam punaḥ ayodhyām āgatam
tam rāmam mārgagatam śukram yathā drakṣyanti
54. The fortunate ones will see Rama, who has completed his forest exile and returned to Ayodhya, just as one sees the planet Venus (Śukra) moving in its celestial path.
अयमात्मभवः शोको मामनाथमचेतनम् ।
संसादयति वेगेन यथा कूलं नदीरयः ॥५५॥
55. ayamātmabhavaḥ śoko māmanāthamacetanam ,
saṃsādayati vegena yathā kūlaṃ nadīrayaḥ.
55. ayam ātma-bhavaḥ śokaḥ mām anātham acetanam
saṃsādayati vegena yathā kūlam nadī-rayaḥ
55. ayam ātma-bhavaḥ śokaḥ anātham acetanam mām
vegena saṃsādayati yathā nadī-rayaḥ kūlam
55. This sorrow, born from my own self (ātman), quickly overwhelms me, leaving me helpless and senseless, just as the current of a river erodes its bank.
हा राघव महाबाहो हा ममायास नाशन ।
राजा दशरथः शोचञ्जीवितान्तमुपागमत् ॥५६॥
56. hā rāghava mahābāho hā mamāyāsa nāśana ,
rājā daśarathaḥ śocañjīvitāntamupāgamat.
56. hā rāghava mahābāho hā mama āyāsa nāśana
rājā daśarathaḥ śocan jīvitāntam upāgamat
56. hā rāghava mahābāho hā mama āyāsa nāśana
rājā daśarathaḥ śocan jīvitāntam upāgamat
56. Alas, O Rāghava, O mighty-armed one! Alas, O destroyer of my troubles! King Daśaratha, grieving, met his end of life.
तथा तु दीनं कथयन्नराधिपः प्रियस्य पुत्रस्य विवासनातुरः ।
गते ऽर्धरात्रे भृशदुःखपीडितस्तदा जहौ प्राणमुदारदर्शनः ॥५७॥
57. tathā tu dīnaṃ kathayannarādhipaḥ priyasya putrasya vivāsanāturaḥ ,
gate'rdharātre bhṛśaduḥkhapīḍitastadā jahau prāṇamudāradarśanaḥ.
57. tathā tu dīnam kathayan narādhipaḥ
priyasya putrasya vivāsana-āturaḥ
gate ardharātre bhṛśa-duḥkha-pīḍitaḥ
tadā jahau prāṇam udāra-darśanaḥ
57. tathā tu narādhipaḥ vivāsana-āturaḥ
priyasya putrasya dīnam kathayan
ardharātre gate bhṛśa-duḥkha-pīḍitaḥ
tadā udāra-darśanaḥ prāṇam jahau
57. Thus, indeed, the king, distressed by the exile of his beloved son and speaking piteously, when midnight had passed, severely afflicted by sorrow, then gave up his life, the noble-minded one.
